Apple loses another patent relevant to Samsung case

Apple has lost another patent relevant to its perpetual twilight war with Samsung, again related to the ways users interact with touchscreen devices.

This time it was U.S. Patent No. 7,844,915, which describes the way a user can "pinch-to-zoom" and differentiates that function from scrolling.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has declared that that function was predicted by Patent No. 7,724,242, relating to gestures on touch screens and filed by W. Daniel Hillis and Bran Ferren in 2005.

The jury in the Apple-Samsung case previously ruled that 21 of 24 Samsung devices in question violated Apple's pinch-to-zoom patent, so this could have big ramifications for that fight.

History repeats itself

This shouldn't come as a surprise - the USPTO "tentatively invalidated" this same Apple patent late last year, and this most recent announcement appears to just be confirmation of that decision.

And this isn't the first time this has happened. Last year the USPTO ruled that an Apple-owned patent relating to the "rubber band" function of scrolling touchscreen devices was invalid.

The patent described the way the screen bounces when users reach the end of a page or document, and the jury found 21 of Samsung's devices infringed on it.

But that function no longer belongs to Apple either, casting yet more doubt on the already nebulous legal battle between Apple and Samsung.

Even more baffling is the fact that the patent apparently still stands in some countries, as a Japanese court found just last month that Samsung infringed on it.

Modern warfare

The big decision in the case of Apple vs. Samsung came last year when the jury awarded Apple over $1.05 billion (£688m, AU$1.15b), but the battle rages on nonetheless.

With the USPTO throwing all kinds of wrenches in Apple's holdings is it any wonder the two companies have been allowed to keep chipping away at one another in court?

Apple reportedly has two months to respond to the USPTO's most recent decision, and Apple can choose to appeal the decision and/or seek judicial review.

These nifty charts show just how fragmented Android is

A new study published this week uses colorful charts to demonstrate just how fragmented the Android ecosystem is, both by device and by OS version.

According to OpenSignal, of the last 682,000 Android devices to download the company's signal-finding app, there were 11,868 unique phone models. Compare that to the previous year, when there were just 3,997 unique models among 682,000 devices surveyed.

Of the 682K counted this year, 47 percent were made by Samsung, and 37.9 percent used Jelly Bean, the most recent version of Android.

In total there are still eight different versions of Android in use.

Android vs. iOS

Compare that to iOS, where 95 percent of devices are on the most recent version, iOS 6, 5 percent are still on iOS 5, and the older versions combined have less than 1 percent, OpenSignal claims.

In November 2012 54 percent of Android users were stuck on Android 2.3: Gingerbread, a number that by now has dropped to 34.1 percent, according to OpenSignal.

The study also showed that Android devices have many times more screen sizes and shapes than other mobile operating systems, in particular iOS.

Pros and cons

"What is clear from this report is that Android fragmentation, of all varieties, is increasing," the study reads. "Too often this is treated as a problem with Android, rather than a strength, but we feel that this misses the bigger picture."

According to the study, "developing apps that work across the whole range of Android devices can be extremely challenging and time-consuming." No surprise there.

But is there a silver lining? "The availability of cheap Android phones (rarely running the most recent version) means that they have a much greater global reach than iOS, so app developers have a wider audience to build for," the study claims.

"It may be tricky to do, but the potential reward definitely makes it worthwhile. For consumers, extreme fragmentation means that they can get exactly the phone they want – big or small, cheap or expensive, with any number of different feature combinations."

Talking points

The fragmentation of Google's OS has been touched on many times before.

Android co-creator Rich Miner said just this month that Android fragmentation's no big deal.

And early last year analysts claimed that developers were losing interest in Android because of the difficulties of creating apps for such a fragmented OS - though to this day Android still leads the pack in terms of market share.

Still, it's definitely a problem, or it wouldn't come up so often. At least Google probably isn't in denial anymore at this point.

iTunes music takes back the living room in Apple TV update

A beta update of the Apple TV software released to devs will be music to people's ears, as the service has opened up the ability to purchase music from iTunes.

Until now we've been able to buy movies and TV shows on the set-top box, but while music streaming has been available, the ability to purchase iTunes tracks straight from the TV has been a no-no.

The new app in Apple's update has been made stylistically similar to the iOS version, letting you use scrollable panes to browse through artists and listen to song previews.

On selecting an album you'll be told its most popular or latest track. Buying songs will sync with iTunes across your devices rather than downloading to the Apple TV box.

Another new feature is that you'll be able to use your iPhone, iPad or iPod to automatically set up Apple TV by syncing it with Bluetooth.

The new software is only available to developers at present - we're expecting the software to be released in its full form until later this year although nothing has been set in stone yet.

Apple's dev centre is back up a week after being hacked

After being hacked last week, Apple took its developer centre website down with plans to overhaul its system to prevent future breaches.

The company said that it was "completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software and rebuilding our entire database".

It had also said that personal data such as credit card information and passwords were encrypted, though around 275,000 logins were reportedly put at risk by the hack.

After a week being under maintenance, some components have finally been starting to come back online over the last few days.

Status update

The look and feel of the website so far seems to be mostly the same as before, with Mac, iOS and Safari dev centres back online

Certificates, identifiers and profiles, iTunes connect, bug reports and software downloads services are also available.

Apple has a system status page for updates on what is or what isn't available yet.

While not quite attracting the same level of interest as new Royal Baby's kingly monicker, tech fans remain pretty keen to learn the title Apple will bestow upon its somewhat less regal 'budget iPhone handset.'

Following umpteen leaks of cases, colours, specs and more, there's surprisingly been very little talk about what the device itself will actually be called. Until now.

A post on the WeiPhone forums, responsible for showcasing many of the leaks so far, shows a photo of purported packaging for the handset, baring the branding iPhone 5C.

As you can see yourselves from the picture above, there's nothing particularly official-looking about the snap, but the plastic casing does resemble those harbouring recent iPod touches.

iPhone 5 Colour?

It wouldn't be too far-fetched to believe Apple may adopt such a naming convention. After all, the company is expected to launch the iPhone 5S later this year.

While this 'leak' can be placed firmly in the 'rumour and speculation' category, it's interesting to ponder what the 'C' in iPhone 5C could actually represent.

Could it be colour, cheap, cool, charming, Charlie, cost-less? Probably none of those, huh? Let us know your own thoughts in the comments below.

Buying Guide: Best Mac SSD: 6 solid state drives reviewed and rated

It's always sad to see a much-loved Mac start to feel slow and doddery as time goes on, with longer start-up times and more waiting around for things to load. When you see the nippiness of something like the iPad or MacBook Air, it can make you feel as though you want to replace a Mac that should still have plenty of life left in it, really.

Fortunately, there's a cheaper way to put some nippiness back in your old machine: swap out its SATA hard drive for a solid-state equivalent. Solid-state drives, or SSDs, ditch the spinning disks of regular hard drives in favour of extremely fast flash storage.

Decent-size SSDs are now easy to find for prices that really won't break the bank these days, and that's what we're testing here. If you're uncertain about installing a drive yourself, ask at your local Apple Authorised Service Centre if they can help. Installing an SSD can make older Macs feel like new - or maybe even better!

It's not just replacing old drives that SSDs are good for, though - if you've got a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac and want some fast external storage, you can use any one of these drives with a Thunderbolt drive caddy to give yourself some additional external storage that's as fast as an internal SSD.

How we tested: Guaging an SSD

Quickbench

When regular spinning hard drives were the only really viable storage option, the interface used to connect them to the computer didn't have to be that fast. SATA II was what most computers used up until a few years ago, but as SSDs became more popular, it quickly became clear that the SATA II connection was actually acting as a bottleneck for their performance - the drives were faster than the connector was.

Newer Macs all use SATA III connectors, which lets SSDs run at their full capability. Because we're interested in these drives as upgrade options for older machines that you want to give a speed boost to, as well as being ways to make a lovely new Mac even faster, we ran two sets of tests.

Pretty much any Mac older than 2011 will have SATA II connectivity instead of SATA III, so to make sure that you can see the results for performance in the kind of machine you have, we ran all tests over both connections. First, each drive was connected to a Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt caddy plugged into a 2012 Mac mini, in order to test their SATA III performance.

Once those tests were finished, each drive was used to replace the internal hard drive in a 2009 MacBook Pro 13-inch, which only has a SATA II connector. We ran the exact same set of tests in each case, and the benchmarks on the following pages will show you both the internal and external results for each drive, along with the results from testing the original hard drive in the MacBook Pro, as a baseline.

Our test suite of choice was QuickBench on OS X 10.8.3. We cloned the same OS install and other files from one drive to another. QuickBench performs a range of read and write tests using various different file sizes, including small random read and write rests, and larger file read and write tests. We had these tests run for 10 cycles each, and we ran the suite of tests twice for each drive when connected over SATA II and twice connected over SATA III.

To put together our benchmark charts, we looked at each drive's results over the two test runs, and selected sets of results that produced the highest average score for that drive. This ensures each drive is represented at its peak performance.

Test one: Value for money

Seagate 600

The Seagate 600 240GB is the newest drive here, so hasn't had a chance to come down in price yet. This makes it the highest-priced of all the drives here by a fair margin, so it's no surprise to see that it's also the most dear in terms of price per gigabyte, costing 78p per GB.

The next two drives are a good step down in price, with the OCZ Vertex 4 256GB and KingSpec C3000 240GB coming in at 67p per GB and 66p per GB respectively. The Vertex 4 is actually around £12 more expensive than the C3000 to buy overall, but because it's a 256GB drive instead of a 240GB one, they're nearly identical for overall value.

The Kingston SSDNow V300 240GB is actually better value than the 65p per GB we've rated it at here suggests, because our review unit was the full upgrade kit, which costs £10 more than buying just the drive. The drive alone would be 61p per GB, making it among the top contenders.

The Corsair Neutron 256GB costs a similar amount, but the extra space means that you're paying a slightly reduced 59p per GB of storage, which we would consider to be excellent, but it's made to look almost ordinary by our winner.

The Samsung 840 Series 250GB comes in at a bargain 54p per gigabyte, making it nearly 10% better value than the Corsair Neutron, and a full third cheaper than the Seagate 600. The prices are all impressive when you take into account how much SSDs used to cost, but they're still more expensive than hard drives: a 500GB hard drive of an equivalent form factor to those we're looking at here would cost you around 8p per GB. This means that the scores below are graded only as relating to other SSDs - otherwise traditional hard drives have the edge.

Test two: Extras

SSDs tend to come with a few different varieties of extras: some come with upgrade kits for fitting your new drive and even transferring from the old one, while others will give you just a few essentials, or just the drive itself.

The Samsung 840 Series actually offers two options, with the 'upgrade' pack of drive plus installation kit setting you back roughly £40 more than just the drive. For that, you get a SATA III cable, an external USB SATA connector, data migration software, screws, a mount for fitting it in 3.5-inch drive bays, and a plastic adapter for turning it from a 7mm thick drive to a 9mm thick drive.

£40 is rather steep compared to what these would cost you individually, but you can't knock the comprehensiveness or convenience. The normal version only comes with the data migration software, and since that's what we've used for our price comparison, that's what we'll score on.

The Kingston actually comes with an upgrade kit (the drive is available alone for about £10 less, but for that paltry price difference we strongly recommend getting the kit). It comes with SATA power and data cables, drive cloning software, 3.5-inch adapter brackets, a 9.5mm adapter, and a full-on external USB drive enclosure, which you can use for your new SSD in order to move the data across to it, and then put your old hard drive to keep around as an external drive once you've swapped. It's pretty much the perfect upgrade kit.

Alas, after that, it gets somewhat anaemic for added options. The OCZ and Corsair packages both come with 3.5-inch adapter mounts and screws, but that's it. The KingSpec comes with just screws, dialling it back even further. The Seagate comes with… nothing.

Test three: Reliability

A problem that plagued SSDs when they were first starting to catch on was their lack of long-term life, as well as their performance dropping severely after they had been in use for a while. The latter has since been addressed by the 'trim' command, a tool that ensures that old data on SSDs doesn't get in the way of new data.

All of the drives listed here support trim, but it also needs to be supported by the computer, and Macs are only enabled to use trim with Apple-supplied SSDs by default. Download Trim Enabler and you can activate trim for any of these drives, though.

However, there's still the reliability of the drives to consider, and this can be measured in two ways: Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF); and Terabytes Written (TBW - the total maximum amount of data that can be written to a drive in its life). The OCZ and Corsair are the best here, both offering a five-year warranty and claiming an average of two million hours MTBF.

The Samsung offers a three-year warranty, with a lower (but respectable) 1.5 million hours as a quoted MTBF. The KingSpec drive is rated at 1.3 million hours MTBF, but comes with just a two-year warranty. The Kingston drive at least comes with a three-year warranty, but is rated for just one million hours MTBF - though it is one of the few here with a TBW listing: 128TB, which is the equivalent of filling the drive 500 times over.

The Seagate is an odd one, with a warranty that's rated either for three years, or until the TBW rating of 72TB is hit. It sounds poor, but hitting that TBW would still require filling the drive 280 times over, so we think the time will run out for most people first.

It's clear from the benchmarks that choosing an outright winner isn't easy. For the most part, the scores are closely aligned, with which drive is performing best trading places several times.

The Corsair was one of the more disappointing, though, coming in consistently with significantly lower speeds in the random read test than its peers. It manages to come in with a middle-of-the-pack performance for the random write test, but is also slightly off the pace for the larger file tests.

The Seagate is a similar story, looking even worse than the Corsair for the random read tests, and giving a middling performance for random write. It did well internally for the large file write test, though.

The Kingston SSD really didn't like being mounted in our old 2009 MacBook Pro. When connected over Thunderbolt, it delivered good speed - for the smaller random read tests, it was a leader - but when connected to the SATA II interface in the laptop, it consistently delivered around half the speed of the others.

The OCZ Vertex 4 was thoroughly disappointing in the random read tests, coming consistently bottom for all but the smallest tests. But it wiped the floor with all the others for the random write tests. Sadly for it, read speed is more important for home users.

The Samsung is built for reading, not writing. It offers leading (or near it) read speeds across the board, but the reverse is true for write speeds. This makes it great for casual users, then, but professionals will want to steer clear.

That leaves the KingSpec, which ultimately takes the crown for us despite not being the fastest that often. You see, it's also never the slowest. It performed only slightly below the leaders the entire way.

The winner: Samsung 840 Series

Though the different drives here show strengths in different areas, we've decided to give the Samsung 840 series the overall award over its closest competition, the Kingston SSDNow V300, because it beats it out in what we consider to be the two most important categories: speed and value, while also being rated for better reliability.

In truth, there's very little between these two drives if you have a newer SATA III Mac. But its slowness in SATA II devices makes it not ideal for older Macs. None of the drives here blew the others away in the speed stakes, so it came down to the overall package.

For us, the Samsung offers the fast read speeds that most home users want, great value, and a good level of peace of mind from its warranty.

In Depth: Watch TV on your Mac: the definitive guide

There may not yet be an Apple-branded television set, but there are lots of ways in which you can watch TV today.

On your Mac, you can fire up Safari and head to the website of one of the main TV channels. Each has a catch-up service that allows you to watch programmes broadcast in the last few weeks. And if you subscribe to Virgin Media or Sky, you can watch some of the channels from your subscription package on their websites.

You can, of course, also plug a USB TV tuner into your Mac. These little gizmos allow you to receive Freeview TV channels over-the-air and watch them or record them on your Mac. You can even hook a TV tuner up to your network and watch it from different Macs in the house.

If you have an iOS device, there are numerous apps that allow you to watch live or on-demand TV. Each of the TV networks has one, as does Sky and Virgin Media. The BBC iPlayer app allows you to download programmes to your device to watch later. There are also TV tuners available for iOS devices.

Finally, you can buy or rent TV programmes and movies from the iTunes Store. And if you sign up to LoveFilm or Netflix, you can watch their content on your Mac, on an iOS device, and in the case of Netflix, on an Apple TV. We'll look at all these options in detail over the next few pages, so get you watching whatever you want, wherever you want to!

Online TV catch-up

Missed that talent show you love? Don't panic!

There isn't yet a single source of on-demand content, but accessing the services out there couldn't be easier. The BBC's iPlayer has dedicated apps for iOS and OS X, both of which allow you to download programmes and watch them later, albeit within a limited time period.

The BBC, Channel 4, and ITV all allow you to watch live TV in a browser, though you'll need to register with Channel 4. Channel 5 has an on-demand service, but doesn't let you watch live TV output. All four terrestrial networks allow you to watch shows you may have missed when they were originally transmitted, but each handles them in a different way.

BBC iPlayer's catch-up service only allows you to watch recent programmes. Channel 4 and 5 offer older content, in Channel 4's case, some of it several years old. And ITV Player, while mainly a catch-up service also offers on-demand programmes which it calls rentals. Many of these are free, but often at least one episode in a series will require you to pay for it.

The BBC's iPlayer allows you to watch recently-broadcast TV, as well as the current output of any BBC channel. Both the Mac and iOS apps allow you to download selected programmes and these are available to watch for a month before they expire. You can also mirror the iPlayer from an iOS device to an Apple TV.

YouTube

Youtube

Both the BBC and Channel 4 have YouTube channels on which they show full-length programmes. On the BBC channel, for example, you can watch every episode in the current series of The Apprentice. And YouTube, of course, is available in a browser on your Mac or as an Apple TV, iPad, iPhone or iPod touch app.

ITV Player

ITV player

ITV Player can be accessed in a browser, or from an iOS app. There's no Mac app, and you can't download programmes. In addition to allowing you to watch recently-broadcast TV, ITV Player has a library of on-demand content. Much of it is free to watch, albeit supported by adverts.

Freeview

Freeview recently added a TV guide which allows you to scroll back and see what you've missed. Click on a show, and if it's available on catch-up, there will be a link. Press it and you're taken directly to the show. It's a neat way of pulling all the services together, but is only available in a browser.

4oD

4oD is an on-demand library of content from Channel 4's archive. Programmes are split into Collections so, for example, the Olivia Colman Collection has episodes of Peep Show, Bad Sugar and Comedy Lab. You'll need to register, but doing so allows you to create playlists, track shows, and keep a scrapbook of information.

TV.com

TV.com is only available in the US, but it offers full episodes of CBS shows such as How I Met Your Mother. It also allows you to review shows and share them with friends. You can also discuss programmes on its forums. The iOS app only shows highlights and clips from shows, but, if you're in the US, you can view full shows in the CBS app.

Demand 5

Demand 5 has a library full of crime dramas, made for TV movies and kids' programmes. And, of course, Channel 5's own inimitable style of documentary. It's a mix of recently broadcast stuff and on-demand content, though it's difficult to tell which is which. You can watch it in a browser on your Mac or using the iOS app.

NBC

The NBC website has full episodes of recently broadcast and archive material as long as you're in the US. It doesn't have the social features of TV.com, but you won't miss them if all you want to do is catch-up on shows you've missed. There's an iOS app too, which has full episodes of selected shows.

There is an abundance of ways to watch live television on either your Mac or iOS device. In addition, if you have an Apple TV, some iOS apps will allow you to mirror their output over AirPlay.

The 'traditional' way to watch live TV on a Mac is to use a TV tuner. These addons connect to your Mac by USB (early boxes used FireWire, but USB2 is fast enough) or to your iOS device using its Dock connector (Lightning devices are due soon). Most are no bigger than a USB stick, and in the case of iOS versions, smaller.

They come either with a built-in antenna or with a socket into which you plug an included aerial or your own set-top or roof antenna. Some even have two tuners so you can watch one channel while recording another, or combine them to optimise signal strength.

In the UK, only digital terrestrial and free-to-air satellite television are supported. In other countries, versions for paid-for satellite TV are also available. As with a TV tuner, the quality of the picture is dependent on the TV signal in your area; you may need a roof aerial to get the best from it.

If you're in a strong signal area, you can use a TV tuner with a laptop or mobile device and have the antenna magnetically fixed to the laptop, or as part of the tuner in the case of a mobile device, and watch TV live without any wires at all.

There are two vendors of TV tuners for the Mac and iOS devices, Elgato and Equinux, which uses the Tizi brand. Elgato has a USB-stick style tuner called EyeTV DTT and a significantly smaller model, barely bigger than the USB connector, called EyeTV DTT Micro. There's also a USB stick with two tuners, called EyeTV Diversity.

And Elgato has a box for Freesat called EyeTV Sat Free. Elgato also has a device called Netstream which connects to a wireless network and allows you to watch and record TV on up to two Macs. The Tivizen, also from Elgato does a similar job, but creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot, so you don't need to be within range of a Wi-Fi network to use it.

There is one Equinux Tizi for the Mac, a USB connected model which is roughly the same size as the EyeTV DTT Micro. There are two Tizi models which are similar to the Tivizen, the Tizi and Tizi+. Both create their own Wi-Fi hotspot and allow you to watch TV on a Mac or iOS device, but the Tizi+ also allows you to record to its in-built flash memory.

Lightning conductor

The Tizi Go connects to the 30-pin dock connector on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You use it with the Tizi app to watch live TV. Elgato has the EyeTV mobile, which does the same thing using Elgato's EyeTV iOS app. Both can be used with Apple's Lightning to 30-pin adaptor.

The software for Elgato's tuners and Tizi is similar but, to our mind, Elgato has the edge. It allows you to create favourite channels and to watch programmes you've recorded on a Mac on your iOS device, provided you're on the same network and have installed the latest version of EyeConnect on your Mac. That said, the ability of the Tizi+ to record to its own flash storage could be useful.

Attaching a TV tuner isn't the only way to watch live TV on a Mac or iOS device, of course. Each of the major terrestrial networks now allows you to watch live TV on its website. On the BBC, this is done through the iPlayer, so you can watch live TV in the iPlayer app for OS X and iOS. Channel 4 and ITV also provide access to all their channels on their websites.

Finding the live TV streams isn't always easy. The BBC does a good job of highlighting where to click to watch live, particularly in the iPlayer apps, but on both Channel 4 and ITV it takes a bit of working out.

For Channel 4, the simplest way to find it is to go directly to watchlive.channel4.com. Channel 5 doesn't have live streaming of its output, but some programmes which are currently being broadcast are available through Demand 5.

Away from the websites of the main networks, choice is limited. The Freeview TV guide allows you to find recently broadcast programmes and click on a link to go directly to them in the relevant catch-up service. But clicking on a programme currently being broadcast won't provide you with a link directly to the channel's live output.

Sky subscribers can watch live Sky TV on many of its channels using the SkyGo app or on the SkyGo website. And Virgin Media customers can do the same using Virgin Media's TV Anywhere website.

Virgin Media's TV Anywhere app also has a very limited ability to play live TV on your iPad. While there's a Watch Now button for every channel, most channels will only let you 'Watch on TV' - use your iPad or iPhone to change the channel on your Tivo box. For BBC output, there's a 'Watch on iPlayer' option.

Catchup of the day

TVCatchup is a third-party provider whose website allows you to watch any Freeview channel, plus a couple of channels exclusive to TVC, from a web browser or app, as long as you're in the UK. You'll need to sign up for an account, but it's free.

There's been a great deal of legal wrangling over TVCatchup. Its owners claim that it simply provides an alternative means for people who are already entitled - that is, UK TV licence holders - to watch free-to-air TV channels. Others argue that it is distributing content illegally.

Currently, there are a couple of outstanding legal proceedings due to be resolved, one in the European Court of Justice, and one in the High Court. TVCatchup says it's confident of winning those and that it's here to stay. We won't really know, however, until the cases have been resolved. In the meantime, TVCatchup continues to operate and is, to our mind, the best way to watch live Freeview TV on your Mac or iOS device. Channels are displayed clearly and clicking on one takes you directly to it.

The iOS app is equally impressive. There's only one way to find channels - a scrolling list on the left of the screen, but it works very well. There's even an AirPlay button in the Play controls so you can mirror the programme you're watching to an Apple TV: useful if the TV you've hooked it up to isn't your main telly, and either doesn't have its own tuner or has a poor signal.

On-demand video services have grown steadily in number in recent years, but they vary in both the quantity and quality of their content and in the way you pay for them. We've already seen that Channel 4 through 4oD, and Channel 5 via Demand 5, offer on-demand access to their programmes, and in the case of 4oD, the library is very impressive and the cost is no more than a few adverts.

But there are lots of other services that work on both your Mac and iOS device. Some, such as Netflix and LoveFilm, charge a flat monthly rate to watch as much as you want. Others, like Blinkbox (and of course iTunes) charge you a fee for every video.

And a third group, those provided by Sky and Virgin, require you to be a subscriber to access them. The flat rate services seem like a good deal, and they are - if you like their content and are likely to watch more than two or three hours a month. The pay-as-you-go services tend to have the most recent releases: studios are more comfortable applying traditional business models to their crown jewels.

Once they've squeezed as much revenue as they can from sales and rentals, they're added to the subscription services. Both Sky and Virgin also have pay-as-you-go on-demand services for the latest releases, but these are separate from their app or browser-based offerings.

If you're unsure whether a subscription service would suit you, both LoveFilm and Netflix offer the first month free, so you can try them out. Blinkbox is currently offering £5 credit to new customers, so you can give that a go for nothing, too.

What you want, when you want it. Or at least that's the promise…

Tesco's Blinkbox allows you to watch movies and TV on a pay as you go basis. It prides itself on having the latest movies before LoveFilm and Netflix, and has some recent TV content too. You can watch in a browser or via the iPad app, though you can't buy or rent from within the app. And if you have a Tesco Clubcard, you can earn points. It's one of the few places non Sky subscribers can watch the likes of Game of Thrones and Veep.

Netflix

Netflix

Netflix has gained a lot of attention recently because it has started creating its own content. The US version of House of Cards is exclusive to Netflix and you can watch it in a browser or an iOS app, as well as on Apple TV.

Like LoveFilm, you pay a monthly fee, and there are no recent blockbusters. But there's some good content, including Breaking Bad and Arrested Development. The first month is free, so you can cancel before paying anything.

LoveFilm

LoveFilm is best known as a mail-order DVD rental service, but also offers movies and TV via LoveFilm Instant. You pay a monthly fee, then watch whatever you like, either in a browser or via the iPad app.

Content is limited: you won't find the kind of blockbusters that are on iTunes or Blinkbox, and new releases are only available on disc. If the content suits you, however, the subscription is good value. And the first month is free.

SkyGo

If you're a subscriber to Sky, SkyGo allows you to watch live TV from your subscription package or choose from a large on-demand library. If you subscribe to the movie and sports channels, you'll be able to watch those too.

SkyGo is available on a Mac in a browser or in the SkyGo app. For £5 a month you can download programmes and increase the number of mobile devices registered to use your account to four.

Virgin Media TV Anywhere

TV Anywhere is a bit of a mish-mash. If you're a Virgin subscriber, you can watch live or on-demand TV on its website, as well as manage your TiVo box. You're limited to channels you subscribe to, so if you're on one of the larger packages, there's more content.

The iPad app allows you to watch a very limited selection of live TV and manage your TiVo box, but you can only watch on-demand content if your Tivo box is connected to your network by Ethernet.

The iTunes Store

Apple provides a bulging library of content to buy or rent

iTunes Store

The gateway to watching and listening to music and video on your Mac, and to transferring it to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, iTunes is also an excellent way of buying and renting movies and TV. The app on your Mac will play any music file encoded as MP3, AAC or Apple Lossless, and any QuickTime compatible or MPEG-4 video file with the suffix .mov, . mp4, or .m4v. Files in those formats can be imported to iTunes using File > Add to Library or by dropping them on to iTunes' main window.

If you've checked 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to LIbrary' in iTunes' preferences, the files will be copied. If not, they'll stay where they are on your hard disk.

The iTunes Store has a huge catalogue of movies, including recent blockbusters and TV series. Most movies, though not all, can be both bought and rented. TV series can be bought as individual episodes or a 'box set.' And both movies and TV series come in standard and high definition.

If you're buying from a Mac, iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, the movie or TV programme will download to your device. If you purchase from an Apple TV it will stream, but you can download it to another device later by clicking on the Purchased link in the iTunes Store.

Once your videos are in iTunes on your Mac they, along with stuff you've bought on the iTunes Store can be shared with any Mac, Apple TV, or iOS device on your network by clicking File > Home Sharing > Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on the host Mac. This is the only way to share content bought on iTunes with other devices, as it is protected with Apple's FairPlay DRM.

If you've bought movies or TV programmes on iTunes on your Mac or Apple TV, you can download them directly to your iPad without having to re-purchase them. In the Videos app, tap Store, then at the bottom of the screen, Purchased. Tap Films or TV Series at the top of the screen, and then the cloud icon next to the programme or movie you want to download. Doing the same on the iPhone or iPod touch will only allow you to download music.

iTunes is also the conduit for transferring videos between your Mac and iOS device.

AirPlay mirroring

Reflect everything from one screen to another, as if by magic

AirPlay mirroring is a terrific innovation and one which games developers in particular have used to great effect. But what about video content on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac? The short answer is that it depends on a couple of things.

The first is your device. To mirror from an iPhone, you'll need either a 4S or 5. If you have an iPad, it will need to be an iPad 2 or later. The Mac can also mirror its display to Apple TV, but you'll need either a MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac mini that was released in mid-2011 or later, or a MacBook Pro launched in early 2011 or later, plus Mountain Lion. These hardware restrictions may seem harsh, but AirPlay mirroring needs on-GPU H.264 encoding and the older Macs just aren't up to the job.

Encoding the video on the CPU, particularly on older Macs, would put a strain on the processor, but one Mac app, AirParrot, manages to do it for multiprocessor Macs. Its developer says it has worked hard to optimise the encoding so that it doesn't hog too many processor cycles, but the older your Mac, the greater the strain it will put on it.

The other factor which dictates whether you can mirror video is the app from which you want to mirror. For example, BBC iPlayer and TED allow you to mirror content without a problem. But 4oD, ITV Player, and Demand 5 don't. 4oD supported mirroring until last year, but Channel 4 now explains that enabling AirPlay would require 'specific content rights, which we don't currently own.'

You can't hook up your iPad to your TV by HDMI cable and use 4oD either, for the same reason. Conversely, HBO's Go app, available only in the US, originally didn't support AirPlay mirroring, but it was enabled in its second version, which was launched in February.

Currently, AirPlay is one-way mirror. You can mirror the content of a display on a Mac or an iOS device on an Apple TV, but you can't, for example, mirror an iPad's display on a Mac, or vice versa. At least, not officially.

There are a couple of Mac apps which allow you to mirror an iOS device on a Mac. AirServer, despite its name, is one of those and acts as a receiver for mirrored content from an iPhone or iPad. It effectively fools the iOS device into thinking it's an Apple TV.

Another app, Reflector does a similar job. AirPlay isn't the only option for sending video wirelessly from an iOS device or Mac to your TV, however. YouTube and Netflix are reported to be working on an open-standard to do just that. Until them, there's Plair.

Plair promises to be 'AirPlay for everyone.' The hardware is a device which plugs into your TV's HDMI socket and connects to your Wi-Fi network. Once you've downloaded the app (available for OS X and iOS) you can send video streams from some websites to your television.

It doesn't support rights-protected content, so won't work with iTunes videos or 4oD, but streams from most TV networks and video sites should work.

Tablets running on Android have yet to reach their full potential, according to the operating system's VP of product management Hugo Barra, who called on third-party manufacturers to up their game.

Despite launching a brand new version of the blockbusting Google Nexus 7 tablet last Wednesday, Barra said Android hadn't yet 'put its best foot forward' when it comes to creating tablets to rival the iPad.

Speaking to The Verge, he lamented the lack of a tablet (or ten) in the style of the HTC One smartphone, with high-end premium design, running on the Android OS.

He said the Nexus 7 is coming close to achieving those goals, but said OEMs must do their bit by creating top shelf devices with the same polish and finish as their flagship Android smartphones.

Pristine execution

He said: "If you look at the execution that HTC did on [the One smartphone], it's pristine. Why hasn't someone done that on the tablet? Or on like ten tablets?"

"I think we are perhaps coming close to it, but this is a $200 device. "If you were to price it at $300 or $400 you could do something a little bit more in that territory in terms of polish and finish and materials and so on.

"Why hasn't that happened yet?"

"Doing that at the $400 category can be done and it will. In my opinion, the Android ecosystem has been lagging behind a little bit but is catching up."

Barra also claimed tablet-optimised Android apps are now becoming commonplace on the Google Play store, estimating 60 per cent of apps have now been tailored for tablets, while the disparity between iOS and Android gaming experiences has also diminished.

The expected Haswell refresh of Apple's MacBook Pro notebook range will happen in October this year, according to our old friends Mr & Mrs Supply Chain Source.

The China Times reported on Friday that Apple is gearing up for a launch before the Christmas season, with the paper's insiders claiming there'll be no price bump as a result of the inclusion of Intel's new chips.

Apple has already fitted its MacBook Air devices with the new generation i5 and i7 core processors and the results have been widely lauded.

Thanks to much-improved power efficiency, Haswell chips have granted laptops and notebooks that elusive Holy Grail of near all-day battery life, with double the life-span of the previous generation models.

Surprises?

Earlier this week Apple promised 'exciting products' would be coming "this fall," with new iPhone and iPad models expected by the end of the year, along with the arrival of iOS 7 and Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks?

With the MacBook Pro refresh also on the horizon, what else could Apple have in store? Could it surprise us with the earlier-than-expected iWatch launch? Or perhaps some major developments with Apple TV?

In Depth: Apple iTV: how Apple's television will really work

We all have our own idea about what an Apple-branded television would, or perhaps should, look like. And those of us who have spent more time thinking about it than is strictly necessary, given that it's still a rumour, also have an idea of the features it will have and what we'll be able to do with it besides watch TV.

We put our heads together in the office, and after a long, and only occasionally rancorous, discussion came up with our idea of what the Apple iTV will be like. We threw out some lovely ideas because, while they'd be fun, they're either not practical or the technology isn't quite right yet.

We included others which may be unlikely but are technically possible. (What's the purpose of an exercise like this if not to have some fun and dream a little?) We've even worked out how the remote control could work and how the successor to the existing Apple TV could solve that perennial flat-screen TV problem: poor audio quality.

It goes without saying that an Apple television would look stunning, but there's a great deal more to it than that. We think the TV we've come up with knocks the socks off anything else on the market and if Apple were to launch one today, we'd be first in the queue, credit cards at the ready.

Introducing Apple iTV

At least in terms of interaction, the remote control is perhaps the most important part of the TV, and we think there are a couple of possible options for it. One is a slim aluminium remote similar to the one Apple uses for Apple TV. If it went down this route, we think the remote would have a mic for Siri and connect with Bluetooth low energy.

The other option would be a new iPod touch. It would have a touchscreen interface, allowing you to swipe, tap, and type to control the Apple TV. It too would have a microphone for Siri. Putting the Siri mic in the remote rather than the TV would mean that only one person could control the television at a time, which is essential in our view.

Finally, in keeping with Apple's focus on simplicity, the remote would also have an infra-red transmitter so that it could also be used as a universal remote for other devices you may own.

Channels

Channels

In our view, Apple's television won't have channels in the traditional sense. Apple's purpose in producing a TV is selling content and services, so it will want to ensure you use it to watch and listen to content it provides.

For that reason, we envisage channels as apps. In the same way that Apple TV currently has apps for Major League Baseball, The Wall Street Journal, and Netflix, so the Apple television will have apps for BBC, ITV, and so on. Those apps will either be made by Apple in partnership with content providers, or by the providers themselves, in the same way as they develop apps for iOS.

We think the former is more likely; consistency is even more important on a television than it is on a tablet. Expect to see apps for major channels and for catch-up and on-demand services. You will also, of course, be able to buy and rent movies and TV programmes from the iTunes Store.

As with the second- and third-generation Apple TV, you won't be able to download those movies and programmes to the television, you'll have to stream them from Apple. You'll also be able to connect a Sky+, Virgin Media, Freeview, or YouView set-top box to the television, allowing you to watch those channels to which you subscribe or which are free-to-air.

Of course, Apple will want you to stay within its universe, but preventing you from accessing your Sky or Virgin Media content would be sheer madness. Finally, the television will have AirPlay support, so you'll be able to mirror iOS apps from your device.

Audio

If recent tweaks to Apple's Mac line-up are anything to go by, audio quality is increasingly important to Apple. And we think it will be a key feature in an Apple television.

One possibility is that it could incorporate the downward firing speakers in the current iMac line-uip - check out our iMac review. These are really rather good, and loud enough to fill a decent-sized living room. They rely on the screen being only a few inches above a flat surface, however, in order to reflect the sound.

Given the number of people who wall-mount televisions, that would be a problem. We pondered the idea of a wireless sound bar with a separate sub-woofer and it's an attractive proposition. In the end, however, we decided Apple was more likely to go for an all-singing, alldancing, cinematic surround-sound setup.

Being Apple, of course, it would have to be wireless. That would mean a new version of AirPlay with support for a wireless 5.1 channel audio codec, something which may prove too much of a challenge initially. But even if wireless surround-sound speakers aren't available at launch, we think they'll arrive in a future version.

Ashton Kutcher and director break down 'Jobs,' talk man behind the curtain

"It only takes one person to start a revolution," and after a special screening of the Jobs biopic, it's evident that Ashton Kutcher, the actor portraying the iconic Apple founder, believes in the credo.

On Thursday, film studio Open Road invited the press to a pre-release screening of Jobs in San Francisco. The film will open in U.S. theaters Aug. 16.

While we can't divulge on the film, a post-credits Q&A with direct Joshua Michael Stern and Kutcher gave us plenty of writing fodder.

The theater was packed with press and rather annoyingly, many had Google Glass in tow.

However, sporting the gaudy gear seemed appropriate for a film about the limitless boundaries of innovation, where during the question and answer session Kutcher eloquently addressed the importance of failing, and the need to encourage entrepreneurs in the breakneck world of tech.

Dissecting Jobs

Jobs' life was filled with troublesome relationships caused by his "prickly personality," which is putting it rather mildly.

Stern addressed how Jobs never lived in the past, rather relying on the present and focusing on future endeavors. For Stern, Jobs was loyal to his achievements first, and that required boxed up emotions and a lack of sentimentality.

Kutcher and Stern

When asked what his thoughts were on Jobs' mercurial cruelty, Kutcher explained that after much research, he believed the continued rejection in Jobs' life from his parents, people around him and the betrayal from his own company played a huge role in creating the famous, dysfunctional personality.

Kutcher said the result of Jobs' erratic, anti-social tendencies only pushed him harder to create products that people would love - because in loving the product, they essentially love its creator, an emotional process that Kutcher described as "very human."

The baseball hat-donned actor also added that despite Jobs' genius, there's clearly a kinder way to treat employees, and people in general - reassuring since Kutcher himself co-founded a media company and created a venture capital fund.

Kutcher walks the walk and talks the talk

When asked about the type of preparations he took on for the role, the infamous Steve Jobs gait was brought up.

With three months to prep, Kutcher said he tried to digest all of the books Jobs read (Edison, Ansel Adams, etc.), while researching Bauhaus and numerous other design concepts.

He even had hours of Jobs audio on a Soundcloud full of speeches he'd listen to while driving or walking, and even fall asleep to, in order to get the perplexing role right.

Because Jobs often liked to be outside walking and hiking, and even having meetings in the fresh air, Kutcher did the same - which is when he would practice the peculiar hunched hop Jobs was known for.

Kutcher had his own speculations about this particular walking style. He felt Jobs' barefoot days in the 70s during college made him lift his feet higher to avoid stubbing his toes, a step he then simply carried on for the rest of his life.

The dedication of Kutcher's research to show us the man behind the curtain seems quite obsessive in nature (heck, it even put him in the hospital as reported earlier this year), and interestingly, provides another parallel to Jobs' own obsessive personality.

Kutcher catches fire

Personality and mop-top makeup aside, the tall bean-pole actor shares other similarities with Jobs: the ability to convey idealistic soliloquies with extreme passion as if his life depended on it.

Though his topics of discussion almost sounded like a valedictorian speech, Kutcher still won over the audience by expressing what appeared like genuine, articulate thoughts on the need for more never-give-up type of entrepreneurs in the tech sphere:

"We need entrepreneurs more than ever … the great innovation that happens in the world is happening around technology … we're doing an incredible job leading the world - the United States is building technology and we need to inspire people."

Kutcher

It seems like he's taking a page right of Jobs' book with his desire to tell others to rise up and be more, and to be better. Kutcher's zeal for tech is so transparent, he went on to mention Elon Musk or even one of the entrepreneurs he works with every day as being the next "god" to revolutionize tech.

Regardless of who it is, Kutcher adamantly stated that the formula for the next Jobs will require someone who is "driven, focused and works hard and fearlessly approaches failure, and falls down and gets back up."

For Kutcher, failing repeatedly will birth the next great pioneer in technology: "I guarantee you the next person who innovates that way will be someone who's failed many times in their lifetime."

Inaccuracies, schminaccuracies

Thought a lot more was said (as if there wasn't enough here already) about the portrayal of the iconic Apple founder, one issue raised were the discrepancies with reality present in the film.

Steve Wozniak has been vocal about this by telling Gizmodo how it was actually him trying to convince Jobs about the democratization of technology - Jobs apparently only wanted to make a quick buck and his lofty speeches seen in the trailers, "came much further down the line."

However, Stern claims Jobs always had an aura of mystery that no one could or would be able to unravel and that the film wasn't an exact science in terms of real events, but was as close as the filmmakers could get.

For Kutcher, near-perfect authenticity was also important, evident in his countless hours of research. But what mattered most to him occurred after a private screening held for the original Apple gang - a member strode up to Kutcher and said, "Thank you for giving me back two hours with Steve."

And really, that's all we can hope from the film.
