The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has issued an alert to warn iOS users that they're vulnerable to a unique form of attack.

They call it the "Masque Attack," and it involves malicious users tricking you into installing harmful apps from outside Apple's App Store.

Devices with iOS versions 7 and up, including the latest releases, are vulnerable, CERT says.

The exploit reportedly works because iOS can't distinguish between authentic and counterfeit apps as long as the counterfeit has the correct "bundle identifier."

A simple solution

Apple issued a statement, though, with a simple solution: only download apps and app updates from "trusted sources."

"We encourage customers to only download from trusted sources like the App Store and to pay attention to any warnings as they download apps," an Apple spokesperson said.

"Enterprise users installing custom apps should install apps from their company's secure website," the spokesperson added.

That's one source of potential trouble, if attackers are able to pose as corporate users' IT staff. But Apple and FireEye, the security firm that discovered the vulnerability, said there are no recorded instances of this actually being exploited.

AirCastLive app lets you throw photos and videos to a Vizio TV for free

There are plenty of reasons to love Vizio's new 4K P-Series TVs, not least because they're the first affordable Ultra HD sets to hit the market.

Here's another: the AirCastLive app, which Vizio and AirCast Mobile have announced can now sling photos and video directly from smartphones and tablets to Vizio smart TVs.

The app is available on iOS and Android, and it lets users send content between devices even if they're not on the same wi-fi network. Photos and video are first uploaded to the company's servers, and from there they can be shared to other AirCast users' screens. AirCast says it happens "instantly."

The app is available for a small fee on Google TV and Roku devices, but the version for Vizio TVs, out now, is free with 1GB of storage. It's compatible with Vizio's E-Series and M-Series TVs, plus the brand new 4K P-Series.

New Google Calendar schedules your day so you don't have to

Google has announced a new Google Calendar app that implements elements of Google Now to partially automate your scheduling needs.

"It's designed to be a helpful assistant, so you can spend less time managing your day, and more time enjoying it," Google Product Manager Ian Leader wrote in a Gmail blog post today.

Like the Google Inbox email app the company debuted in October, the new Google Calendar draws information from your whole personal app ecosystem to schedule and update its own data automatically.

The video below shows the new Calendar in action.

One example is how the new Google Calendar app can automatically add events to your calendar when you get an email with thinks like flight info and concert ticket purchases.

The automated schedule entries will contain relevant info like venues and flight numbers, and will even reportedly stay updated even as flight delays or other factors get in your way.

Google Calendar also now has something called "Assists," which Leader wrote are helpful suggestions that attempt to auto-full entries as you type them in manually.

Finally there's also a new Schedule View that automatically adds photos and maps, cityscapes and illustrations to make your Google Calendar less of an eyesore to view.

The new Google Calendar is available now on all Android 5.0 Lollipop devices, and will roll out to those running Android 4.1 and up "in the coming weeks." And an iOS version is also in the works.
