The Royale FlexPai will beat Samsung Galaxy X to 'first foldable phone' title Posted: 04 Jan 2019 01:57 PM PST The world's first foldable phone isn't going to be the Samsung Galaxy X, instead it's the FlexPai from Royale, and it'll be officially launched on January 7 at CES 2019. We already know a lot of the specs for the FlexPai as it was announced in China back in November 2018, but this is the first worldwide launch for the phone and we'll be reporting live from Royale's press conference to bring you everything you need to know about the futuristic device. The Royale FlexPai is a phone-tablet hybrid, with a large 7.8-inch, 1920 x 1440 AMOLED display which can be folded in half to provide a 4-inch smartphone-like form factor. It won't fold fully flat though, with a hinge bend in the screen creating a wedge shape when in 'phone' mode. What we know so farYou'll also get either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, a flagship-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (although the exact model is yet to be confirmed), dual 20MP + 16MP rear cameras, fingerprint scanner and a 3,800mAh battery. There's currently no word on the Royale FlexPai release date or price, but we're hoping these details will be revealed at the press conference on January 7. Royale is currently selling a developer version of the FlexPai for $1,318 for the 128GB model, or an eye-watering $1,469 for 256GB of storage - and we expect the final consumer version to cost around the same. We're reporting live from CES 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada for the entire week, and we'll be bringing you all the latest from the world's biggest tech show, including a hands on: Royale FlexPai review. Nvidia GPUs built with Samsung's 7nm process could come in 2020 Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:38 PM PST Nvidia is reportedly courting phone maker-meets-processor manufacturer Samsung for a 2020 line of RTX desktop graphics cards built using Samsung’s 7-nanometer (nm) transistor process. This comes from Japan’s My Navi News, claiming access to Samsung sources and information. The processors will be developed using Samsung’s extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) process, which uses a plasma laser to drive silicon material into 7nm transistor structures. Samsung started producing 7nm processors using this method in October 2018, which Tom’s Hardware reports is ahead of its promised early 2019 launch schedule. Nvidia’s latest graphics architecture, Turing, is built on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) 12nm process, and the firm was reportedly slated to build its 7nm RTX graphics processors on TSMC’s matching silicon. The switch could be due to Samsung being further along in its EUV plans than TSMC and other competitors, like Intel. Of course, ARM has several processors based on its 7nm chipset designs on the market already, particularly from Apple (A12X Bionic) and Qualcomm (Snapdragon 855 and 8cx). With 7nm processors driving its graphics cards, Nvidia can either produce new cards with lower power consumption overall at the same performance level or – more likely – use the lower power draw of the 7nm process to pack in even more performance at the relatively same overall power draw of today’s cards. Here’s to hoping Nvidia has more to say about 7nm processors during its CES 2019 keynote.

CES 2019: here's what you can expect from the annual tech-stravaganza Posted: 04 Jan 2019 10:30 AM PST CES 2019 begins in just a few days – and it's already shaping up to be quite the show. While some of the world's top electronics companies have promised to save the best surprises for the show, we've already seen some bombshell announcements from LG, Samsung and others about what they're planning or not planning to showcase at their respective keynotes that take place on Monday, January 7. What we're expecting that day is an absolute deluge of news, followed by a non-stop scavenger hunt trying to find the best products of the show. It's exhausting work, but there's no place like Vegas during CES. What we're on the look out for this year are more AI-equipped devices that will make our lives easier and simplify daily tasks. We're on the hunt for the next big wave of voice assistant devices as well as the tidal wave of 8K- and 5G-compatible TVs, hotspots, smartphones and tablets. Last January we saw innovation in droves at CES 2018, from Samsung's 146-inch modular MicroLED TV, The Wall, and the incredible HTC Vive Pro to LG's rollable 65-inch OLED TV and the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It's the world's biggest tech show, and it's poised to become even bigger in 2019. Can't wait until opening day on January 8? Read on! We've got all the details, predictions and postulations for what you can expect to see at CES 2019. What and when is CES 2019?The 2019 International CES will begin on Tuesday, 8 January and end on Friday, 11 January. It's been taking place since 1967 and is staged by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), a trade organization that represents over 2,000 consumer tech companies in the U.S. Though it gets a lot of attention from the world’s media, this is not an event where the public can go see the latest tech. Unlike the IFA exhibition in Berlin each August, the CES is open only to the electronics trade, as well as journalists, bloggers and plenty of blaggers. (You know who you are...) How big exactly is CES? It's huge. If you're going for the first time, go on a few five-mile walks in the preceding weeks. Seriously, it's hiking boots-big. There are 2.75 million net square feet of exhibit space. Eleven venues. 24 product categories. Some company's booths are vast and complex, while other, smaller firms grab a table in one of the 25 marketplaces. In terms of footfall, the CES attracts about 180,000 people from 155 countries, as well as 6,500 media, who visit 4,500 exhibiting companies. All the biggest tech companies in the world gather ... well, except for Apple. Where will CES 2019 take place?Since 1978 the CES has been staged in Las Vegas. Why? Hotel rooms, all 150,000 of them, and counting. The main venue is the Las Vegas Convention and World Trade Center (LVCC), which is a short (and very busy) monorail ride from The Strip, where most of the hotels are. Along with the nearby Westgate Las Vegas and Renaissance Las Vegas, this is referred to as Tech East. This is where most of the major booths are. Tech West (comprising the Sands Expo, The Venetian, The Palazzo, Wynn Las Vegas, and Encore) is where you'll find hi-fi and audio. At Tech South (ARIA, Park MGM/Park Theater and Vdara) you'll see VR, AR, and gaming. There are shuttle buses between the venues, but it's best to stay put for the day at one of the three areas to avoid the traffic. When do all the announcements happen?Although the weeks before the CES are packed with rumors and reports of what may or may not be launched or announced at the CES, it's not until Sunday, January 6 and Monday, January 7 – the two days before the show opens – that there will be any concrete news. These are the two media days, and they're when the all-important press conferences are held, and consequently when a lot of the headlines are written. Sunday is typically light on news, and in 2019 it's Monday that will see the big companies' press conferences at the Mandalay Bay Hotel at the south end of The Strip. In 2019, confirmed press conferences include Hisense, Hyundai, Intel, LG, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony, TCL, and Toyota. As for whom is actually giving these nail-biting presentations, the first will come from LG on Monday, 7 January; its President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park will discuss AI and 'self-evolving' products … and a foldable phone? January 8 will see keynotes from IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty (trust, AI and quantum) and Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg (5G), while January 9 has AMD's president and CEO Dr. Lisa Su discuss next-gen computing. CES 2019 predictions: what's going to be announcedJust give the attendance list a cursory glance and you'll see that a lot of bases are covered at CES - you'll find AR and VR, voice control, connected cars, robotics, smart home, smart cities, health, wellness, sleep, sports, accessories companies, and everything in between. However, in 2019 there are some trends that are likely to dominate. The most obvious will be voice control. "Well definitely see more smart speakers with screens," says Jack Wetherill, Principal Consultant: Home Electronics at Futuresource, who also thinks CES will see voice creep into more and more product categories, such as soundbars possibly from Samsung, Sony and LG. The TV remote control could finally begin its death throes. "There has already been one TV with far-field microphones in the set itself," says Wetherill, referring to Toshiba's upcoming OLED, 4K HDR, and Full HD smart ranges with Alexa built in. CES could also see the spread of Netflix Calibrated Mode beyond some Sony TVs. Headphones will also get chatty. "A new Alexa development kit from Qualcomm means we'll see more integration of voice into headphones," says Wetherill. "We're waiting for headphones that respond to a wake-word, and while that probably won't emerge at CES 2019, we will see true wireless earphones with longer battery life – it would be logical if Sony brought more ‘true wireless’ products at CES." Another trend will be foldable displays, with the Samsung Galaxy X likely to feature alongside LG’s foldable. However, foldables could go much deeper than mere phones. "Where we’re expecting real change is laptops and tablets," says Tom Morrod, Senior Research Director, IHS Markit. "We are expecting to see foldable laptops with OLED screens that extend across the entire keyboard area – this means you could open them up to monitor size, or to book format, or use them as a normal laptop format with the keyboard as half of the touch panel." But how, exactly, Android and Windows adapt their OS for foldable devices will be interesting. Last but not least, connected cars at CES 2019 could also see integrated OLEDs to replace wing mirrors. Want specific predictions for each company? We've got those, too! Aircharge at CES 2019Wireless charging is on the up, and the CES will definitely see three new products from Aircharge: a Fast Wireless Charger 10W, Fast Dual Charger 10W, and a PS4 DualShock 4 Wireless Adapter. Both chargers will deliver 10W fast wireless charging, including both Apple and Samsung fast wireless charging. AMD at CES 2019Semiconductor company AMD has already said that it intends to show-off its 3rd-gen Ryzen processors and new graphics products at CES 2019. According to a recent leak, that will include three new entry-level Ryzen 3 processors (3300, 3300X, 3300G), three mid-range Ryzen 5 processors (3600, 3600X, 3600G) and two Ryzen 7 processors (3700, 3700X). On top of the mainline processors, AMD might also surprise us with a few new mobile processors in the form of the 2.6GHz AMD Ryzen 3 3200U, 2.1GHz AMD Ryzen 3 3300U CPU and 2.1GHz AMD Ryzen 5 3500U. Beyond processors, CES 2019 might be the place that we see the company's next AMD Navi GPUs – though, that seems a little less likely than the 3rd-gen processors. There's also talk of a new Radeon graphics card, with 7nm Vega II GPUs possibly making an appearance. All the latest AMD CES 2019 news:
Asus at CES 2019How about a high-end 10-inch Chrome OS tablet? That's what AndroidHeadlines.com reports that ASUS will be using CES 2019 to announce. With last year's revamped Zenbook models and Alexa-enabled mesh router, the Asus Lyra Voice, we're excited to see what else Asus could show off this time around. Canon at CES 2019CanonRumors.co reports that CES 2019 could see the unveiling of a Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III – complete with a new image sensor and a longer zoom range – and possibly a G9 X Mark III. That rumor seems to be even more likely than ever now that Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III product images surfaced online. All the latest Canon CES 2019 news: Intel at CES 2019Is Nvidia about to get a serious challenge in the high-end graphics card market? If reports from Anthony Garreffa at TweakTown are anything to go by, a discrete graphics card could be coming from Intel. In the world of processors, rumor has it that Intel is developing a new 10-core, 20-thread CPU codenamed Comet Lake that will be based on yet another iteration of Intel’s 14nm process. If the rumors are true, this will be the first time Intel has outpaced AMD in the CPU core war in a very long time. All the latest Intel CES 2019 news: LG at CES 2019It's confirmed, LG will definitely have TVs at CES 2019. We can safely say that because the Korean-based electronics manufacturer already announced the Alpha 9 (Gen. 2) TV processor that will power its 2019 OLED TVs. Details were sparse on how it would significantly improve this year's Alpha 9, but it could be saving that for CES. We've also heard a lot of buzz about LG's rollable OLED that was available to see behind closed doors at last year's CES. It's not confirmed yet, but there's a good chance it will be available to see on the show floor in 2019. (Actually, that's almost a given considering that it could be on sale in 2019.) We also know LG will be showcasing two new 'ultra' monitors for the worker bees and committed gamers out there: one being a super-sized 49-inch UltraWide monitor, the other a new 144 Hz UltraGear gaming monitor. LG will also be showing off a new range of high-end Dolby Atmos soundbars, all three of which are launching with Google Assistant built in - all well as their expanded range of XBOOM speakers for portable and mini-component speakers. Will LG bring more 'ThinQ' branded smart home products? Probably. However, there are also rumors that LG's CES 2019 keynote will see the unveiling of a foldable phone – though, it might not be available to check out at the show. We may instead have to wait until MWC 2019 to hear about that, though in the meantime we're likely to hear more on the LG G8 flagship phone before it releases in March, with a built-in 3D camera and rumored 'Sound on Display' technology, which would produce audio through vibrations in the display panel rather than a separate speaker. Either way, look out for pre-Christmas, pre-CES announcements of B-lister products – it's an annual tradition from LG's predictable Comms team. All the latest LG CES 2019 news:
Nvidia at CES 2019According to a fresh rumor, Nvidia will reveal its GeForce RTX Mobility graphics cards at CES 2019, supposedly on January 6, which would be in the pre-show run-up to the official start of the event (on January 8). If the rumor from Wccftech turns out to be true, we'll see the RTX 2070 and the 2070 Max-Q parts along with the 2060, 2050 Ti and 2050 in Vegas early next month. Moreover, Nvidia may be preparing more than just RTX graphics for laptops at CES 2019, with a reference to MX250 graphics just appearing in an HP laptop listing. The supposed HP Zahn 66 Pro 14 G2 Notebook PC was reportedly listed somewhere by HP with an Nvidia GeForce MX250 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, first shared by Twitter user Momomo. All the latest Nvidia CES 2019 news:
Royole at CES 2019The world's first foldable phone? That could well come at CES from Royole, which recently teased the FlexPai, the 7.8-inch AMOLED screen that folds in half. Samsung at CES 2019A CES launch for the previously announced Samsung Galaxy Home smart speaker – compete with Bixby – seems a shoo-in, but will Samsung launch its Galaxy X foldable phone? "While the full Samsung launch might be at Mobile World Congress we could instead see the Samsung Galaxy S10 launched at CES, which won’t be foldable but will have 5G and triple camera, plus a new notch design on the front panel," says Tom Morrod, Senior Research Director, IHS Markit. Looking to get ahead of the deluge of news, Samsung has announced two new versions of its Samsung Notebook 9 Pen 2-in-1 laptop. Scheduled for a vague ‘2019’ release and with no pricing to speak of, the laptops are both a rehash (13.3-inch) and an expansion (15-inch) of the late 2017 debut model. We will also almost certainly see Samsung refresh its TV line-up, which will mean more advanced QLED TVs (though probably not a new version of the recent 85-inch Q900R 8K QLED TV). However, if a recent patent filing is anything to go by, we could see a transparent TV. Since Samsung is often launching design-led screens, that wouldn't be a surprise – though if you're after some more practical features, the newly announced Remote Access should be able to source files, programs and cloud services from connected devices and computers direct to your TV. What we do know for sure at this point is that Samsung will enhance its Serif TV and The Frame designer screens with QLED tech. The new screens will make their debut at the show and, according to Samsung, will reside in the large lifestyle TV exhibition zone of Samsung’s booth. The last rumor we've heard concerning Samsung 2019 TVs is that they might include both Bixby and Google Assistant – giving users the choice over which assistant they'd like to use. All the latest Samsung CES 2019 news:
Sony at CES 2019There's likely to be an almighty rush to launch the first 5G-ready phones in 2019, and Sony’s desire to be first-to-market could mean that the CES 2019 sees the appearance of a 5G Xperia phone. It's also possible that Sony will use CES 2019 to launch its 5.9-inch XA3 and 5.7-inch Xperia L3 budget phones, according to KnowYourMobile.com. Sony may also launch a smart speaker-with-a-screen, following in LG's footsteps. Spotify at CES 2019The streaming service doesn't normally deal in hardware, but could Spotify use CES 2019 to launch its own voice search interface to compete with Amazon Echo and Google Home? Spotify has suites reserved at the Wynn Encore … One thing’s for sure, after CES 2019 the world of tech won’t ever be the same.

Microsoft wants to let you know what data of yours it has Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:28 AM PST While Facebook and other tech giants are dealing with data privacy issues, Microsoft is working on a new project code named “Bali” designed to give users greater control over the data collected about them online. The project, which is currently in the private testing stage, is being developed by Microsoft Research. The webpage for the Bali project is currently inaccessible but ZDNet learned that it allows those with a code to sign in and those without a code to request one. The project's “About” page offers more details about its functionality, saying: "New personal data bank which puts users in control of all data collected about them.... The bank will enable users to store all data (raw and inferred) generated by them. It will allow the user to visualize, manage, control, share and monetize the data." Inverse privacyProject Bali is based on the concept of inverse privacy where an item of personal information is inversely private if a third party has access to it but the creator or user of it does not. Some examples of organisations that create inversely private data include healthcare providers, the police and employers. Users could benefit from owning this data themselves instead of having it locked away by a third party. According to the Bali Project's website, the project is in the initial stage as the developers focus on aiding users in collecting their personal data from various websites and giving them the ability to view this data. Last fall, Microsoft, Adobe and SAP signed the Open Data Initiative and at the time Microsoft Officials highlighted users' control of their own data as a key component of the initiative. Via ZDNet

Samsung Galaxy S10 leak seems to reveal battery sizes Posted: 04 Jan 2019 09:02 AM PST The Samsung Galaxy S10 is perhaps the most heavily leaked phone around at the moment but one thing we haven’t heard until now is how big its battery will be. A new leak changes that though, as a photo of cases seemingly designed for the S10 range also includes text which seems to correspond to battery sizes. The image, shared by reputable Samsung leaker @UniverseIce, shows three different cases, one for a 6.4-inch phone (likely the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus), one for a 6.1-inch handset (probably the standard Galaxy S10), and one for a 5.8-inch device (possibly the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite). The S10 Plus case has 4,000 written on it, while the Galaxy S10 case says 3,500 and the Galaxy S10 Lite case reads 3,100. Those numbers could well be battery capacities, though without the ‘mAh’ on the end we can’t be certain. Assuming that battery sizes are accurate, it would mean the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus has the same size battery as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. That would make sense, since its screen is also rumored to be the same size. The standard Samsung Galaxy S10 meanwhile would have a battery the size of the one in the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and the S9 Lite would have one marginally larger than the 3,000mAh one in the standard Samsung Galaxy S9. A question of lensesAs for the design of the cases, they don’t really show us anything new, with the only real detail being the horizontal camera block, which we’ve seen images of before. Based on this image though it looks as though the two larger phones (likely the S10 and S10 Plus) could have the same number of lenses, while the smaller handset likely has fewer, given its smaller cut-out. We’ve heard plenty of camera rumors in the past, but there’s some disagreement as to how many lenses each model will have. Based on the size of the cut-out in this image it looks likely that the Galaxy S10 Lite has two lenses, while the larger phones possibly have three. We’d take all of this with a pinch of salt, since these cases could be designed for other phones or simply built based on inaccurate information, but in any case, we’d expect to hear plenty more about the Galaxy S10 range soon, as it’s likely to land at or around MWC 2019 in late February.

Beoplay E8 earbuds to get wireless charging upgrade this Valentine's Day Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:41 AM PST With Valentine’s Day coming up soon, you may be looking to treat your significant other to some mind-blowing aural...technology. If that’s the case, Bang & Olufsen could have you covered, announcing the release of a new generation of its popular Beoplay E8 wireless in-ears on February 14. The original Beoplay E8s impressed us with their high level of audio quality, good design and simple setup. Now the heritage audio brand’s first true wireless earbuds are getting an update to the leather carrying case, which can now hold a charge of 16 hours – four hours more than the previous generation was able to offer. The case has also has been updated to support wireless charging. This means that you can put the carrying case on Bang & Olufsen’s new wireless charging pad to top up your battery, which will be sold separately to the earphones. Or just use a QI charger you already have at home, your choice. Same earbuds, different caseAnother update to the charging case is the inclusion of an LED light on the front of the case shows you the state of charging, while three LED lights on the back of the case show you the number of full charges left in the case. Like the previous model, the each earbud of the Beoplay E8 2.0s feature a 5.7mm dynamic speaker, a small electromagnetic transducer, NFMI technology and a Bluetooth 4.2 chip with Digital Sound Processing. It doesn’t look like the earbuds themselves have actually changed at all, with the new update focussed solely on accessories. If you’ve already got the original Beoplay E8s, you’ll still be able to use the new charging case, so you can still get all the benefits of wireless charging. The Beoplay E8 2.0s will be available from February 14 for $350 (around £275 / AU$490 based on current conversion rates). The wireless charging case will be sold separately from April 2019, with the retail price still to be confirmed. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hackers leak details of German politicians Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:40 AM PST A massive data breach has led to the personal data and documents of hundreds of German politicians and public figures being published online. As of this time, it is still unclear as to whether the breach occurred as the result of a leak or hack according to a spokesperson from the country's Interior Ministry. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was also affected by the incident though an initial analysis revealed that no sensitive material from her office had been released. If it turns out that the data breach was caused by a hack, it would be the latest in a series of cyberattacks on the German government. Last year for instance, hackers managed to breach the foreign ministry's computer network. Investigating the breachThe cyber defence group BSI met following news of the breach to help coordinate the response of intelligence and other federal agencies. According to BSI, every party in the Bundestag lower house was affected with the exception of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The story was first made public by the broadcaster rbb which revealed that the identity of the hackers responsible for the attack was still unknown along with their motives for targeting the German government. Government spokesperson Martina Fietz confirmed that the personal data and documents of hundreds of politicians and public figures had been released online. Fortunately the armed forces were not affected by the breach according to a defence ministry spokesperson. We will likely find out more once the identity of the hackers responsible is discovered as well as their motive for leaking the personal data and documents of German politicians online. However the leak appears to have come from the same source that has regularly been leaking information on German celebrities in December 2018. “The leak of personal information from German MPs seems to have come from the same source that has been regularly leaking information on German celebrities throughout December via Twitter," said Caitlin Huey, senior threat intelligence analyst at EclecticIQ. "There are several facts that point towards this hack being orchestrated from an organisation leaning politically towards the far right. For instance, information from members of the rightwing party AfD were excluded. The now suspended Twitter account was following only a few accounts, among which was the notorious anonymousnews.ru. The suspended account had also liked posts from users that were openly outspoken against refugees. “The evidence suggests that an organisation with far-right leaning may have the strongest motivation for the leak. It could also be speculated that this was a response to the explosive that was detonated in front of one of the AfD offices yesterday. However, there is nothing conclusive at this time, and even obvious evidence can sometimes point towards a false-flag campaign.” Via Reuters

Hard drive sizes vary from 256GB SSD to 1TB in regular form. Some options also include dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 940MX graphics. At around £200, the HP Stream 14 is decent value if you're after something to cover the basics like web browsing or document editing. It's competitively priced again the cheaper Chromebooks out there despite the 14-inch screen and Windows 10 operating system. As one of the cheapest gaming laptops that will still run games at decent settings, the Acer Nitro 5 is well worth a look if you're wanting to get into PC gaming and play modern games too (just don't expect to be running Battlefield V on ultra settings ok?). The design is a bit plasticy and there's no SSD on the cheapest models, but given the low price and the power of the internal spec inside we're more than willing to look past that to get our gaming fix on the go. A sturdy choice for a study laptop for school/college/uni. The HP Pavilion 15 has more power that the average pupil needs while keeping the costs sensible. If you're not needing extra power of an expensive laptop for video/photo editing, this is more than enough for web browsing, playing some tunes on Spotify and editing coursework. From afar, this laptop might be mistaken for a MacBook Pro which tells you a lot about its level of quality. Don't expect a full metal chassis at this price, but this is probably one of the best looking plastic bodies in its category. There are plenty of ports (old and new), 4GB of RAM and a massive 1TB hard drive. The cheapest models have a respectable i3 processor, but you can get the more powerful i5 versions for not much more if you need that extra kick. Asus saw it fit to include a DVD writer as well as a 15.6-inch full HD screen. Despite this large display and the presence of a numeric keypad, it's just a tad thicker and heavier than an Ultrabook. Why not upgrade your storage with a cheap hard drive or SSD? See the best hard drive and SSD deals. This is the newer version of the Asus Transformer Mini series. This upgrade includes a fingerprint sensor and double the RAM at 4GB for speedier performance. For your money, this is one of the most impressive two-in-one transformer models out there. This is one of the larger Chromebook experience out there for someone looking for a full-sized laptop with an excellent screen at a super low cost. The 4GB of RAM running the Chrome OS is super fast and will allow you to really pile up tabs and apps without slowing down. The battery will easily last the best part of a day for most users too. The best deals on our favourite laptopsWe've reviewed loads of laptops over the years: we've seen the good ones, the great ones and the ones to avoid. Sometimes the best laptops pop up online at some truly deal-tastic prices. So in this section, we list the very best laptops out there and the best deals on each one. The Dell XPS 13 is, bar none, the best laptop you can buy today. It features a revolutionary design that's astonishingly thin and light. Fitting a 13.3-inch screen into such a small frame means Dell has created a nearly borderless Infinity display. It's a powerful and long lasting machine even by today's Ultrabook standards. The XPS 13 comes outfitted with Intel's latest Skylake processors plus lighting, quick storage and memory, all while coming in at a very affordable starting price. For these reasons, it easily takes the top slot as the best Ultrabook, the best Windows laptop and the best overall laptop. Looking for a quality gaming laptop but want to keep things under that unappealing £1000 mark? Then Dell has you covered with the Inspiron 15 Gaming range. The Asus Chromebook Flip isn't perfect, but it's an impressive little piece of kit. Plus, it's so affordable that you might want to pick one up just to have a Chromebook on hand – even if you already own a MacBook or Windows laptop. Aside from the budget price tag, the Flip is one of the best-built Chromebooks to blaze the trail onward for more convertibles. Touchscreen functionality feels more logical, with a screen that actually rotates. The Flip meets all the core tenants of an ideal Chrome OS device. This 10-inch hybrid comes packing a surprising amount of goods considering its small size. It's outfitted with an HD screen and more than enough power to get you through a simple day of web browsing and even image editing. When you're ready kick back with some media streaming, you can pop off the 10-inch tablet. The Asus Strix GL502 is undoubtedly one of the best gaming laptops around for gaming in 1080p. It'll run with the settings cranked with games like Overwatch not dipping below 60fps. The battery life isn't the best, but the display, performance and built-in sound system more than make up for it. Lenovo has crafted a brilliant, forward-thinking device that could very well create a subcategory in computing all of its own. The modest specs hold it back from taking on the big boys in terms of raw power, but the innovative digital touchpad keyboard and drawing surface look like trendsetters to us. The Android version is currently about £100 cheaper than the Windows one. Can a tablet really replace your laptop or home PC? That's still up for debate, but the best tablet trying to make that happen is the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - and it does a fine job with the full blown version of Windows 10, an integrated kickstand and optional keyboard attachment. Great for for creative professionals, students and everyday folks alike - it's only the premium price that push it down the list, but if you're willing to pay for it, you're getting a lot of power. A LOT. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The best PS4 Pro prices, deals and bundles in January 2019 Posted: 04 Jan 2019 08:15 AM PST So you're thinking about PS4 Pro deals or maybe a bundle? Well we can help you out there especially as you've come to say hello around the January sales. This is a fine time of year to grab the best prices as you can get at least one free game with the console compared to last week and save some money on the console itself too. Maybe you're upgrading from your older PS4 so you can dive into 4K gaming. Or maybe you've never had a PS4 and are thinking you may as well start with the best. All solid choices, especially if you're already set with a 4K TV, even better if it has HDR too. There are some fantastic-looking games out now to really make a PS4 Pro shine, with this year alone rocking with Spider-Man, God of War and Detroit: Become Human and things are looking bright later on too with Red Dead Redemption 2, The Last of Us Part 2 and more set to drop jaws around the world once again. You'll find all of the latest and best PS4 Pro prices from the big name stores in our comparison chart below. There's not too much difference in price between retailers at this time of year, but we're constantly on the lookout for the latest deals and bundles. Looking to buy in Australia? You'll want to take a look at our AU page. If you'd prefer a standard PS4, then check out our PS4 bundles page. Don't forget to top up your subscription with one of our discounted PlayStation Plus deals too. So keep this page bookmarked to stay informed of the latest PS4 Pro bundles when they arrive. If you're looking for more information on the PS4 Pro, take a look at our handy Q&A below the bundles. PS4 Pro bundle deals (USA)Worthwhile PS4 Pro bundles have been pretty much non-existent in the US for the last few months. The PS4 Pro on its own has seemingly sold out at the regular $399 price, meaning we've only seen units for sale via third-party sellers on sites like Amazon/Walmart for prices often at least $40 more than usual. This long after release, we're not cool with that you shouldn't be either. As a bare minimum, you want at least one game with the console for $399, ideally less in the next few months. The only decent PS4 Pro bundle today is the Read Dead Redemption 2 one we've just added below, don't expect stock to last long on this one though. PS4 Pro bundle deals (UK)Need an extra controller on the cheap? Take a look at the best DualShock 4 deals. We also have a guide to the best PlayStation VR deals too. Cheap PlayStation Plus dealsIf you're buying a PS4 Pro, you'll probably need a cheap PlayStation Plus deal too. PlayStation Plus (aka PS Plus or PS+) allows you to play PS4 games online, along with access to the Instant Game Collection, a bunch of free games for PS4, PS3 and Vita each month. The default price for a year is £40. We've shopped around for you though and found a range of prices. So check out our guide of you want the best PlayStation Plus deals. What is the PS4 Pro?Essentially, the PS4 Pro is an upgrade of the PS4, rather than a 'next-gen' console. The keywords to take in from the PS4 Pro are 4K and HDR. The new machine will allow game developers to include 4K options in their games, so expect the like of Uncharted 4, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Days Gone, Horizon: Zero Dawn and more to look even better on a 4K TV. HDR, or High Dynamic Range is the other buzzword to be excited about as the PS4 Pro will allow for extra detail to be seen on a range of games and also a wider range of colors not usually displayed by traditional HD TVs. Will my old PS4 games work on PS4 Pro?Absolutely. If you're planning on upgrading to a PS4 Pro from an older PS4, all of your games will still work. Not every title will be patched to take advantage of the new 4K/HDR capabilities, but the default upscaling (if you have a 4K TV) will more than likely see some improvement to the visuals and the improved console power may give the frame-rate a boost on some titles. What else can I watch in 4K/HDR on PS4 Pro?The PS4 Pro is compatible with 4K and HDR, and the content options for both are increasing all the time on services like YouTube and Netflix. Does the PS4 Pro support 4K Blu-rays?No. This was a surprise if we're honest, especially as the new Xbox One S console does. It's a bit of a gamble for Sony, but at the same time, 4K Blu-rays are very expensive for now and many consumers look to digital services to provide their 4K movies and TV content. Do I need a 4K TV to run a PS4 Pro?No, the PS4 Pro will still work on a regular 1080p TV, you won't get the benefits of upscaling or HDR though. You may see a slim amount of extra detail, or frame-rate boost, but we wouldn't expect a massive leap. If you are thinking of buying a 4K TV soon, then it's probably a good idea to splash out on the PS4 Pro instead of the regular or new PS4 Slim as it'll future proof you for a while. Be sure to look out for a TV that supports HDR too, in order to take full advantage of the PS4 Pro's capabilities. Will PlayStation VR be better on the PS4 Pro?Early reports say yes. The PlayStation VR frame-rate is better on PS4 Pro and the resolution gets a bit of a bump too. PlayStation VR will certainly work on the older PS4s, you don't need a PS4 Pro to get involved there. Does the PS4 Pro have optical audio support?Yes! The optical audio output has been removed from the PS4 Slim though, which is a massive shame. PS4 Pro owners though will still be able to use optical connections for their soundbars and sound systems. What are the best games on PS4 Pro?We've dived through our back catalog of PS4 games that have received a PS4 Pro update patch to see which ones look the best and have a noticeable difference. Take a look at our extensive feature - The best PS4 Pro games. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Sony Alpha A7S III: everything we know so far Posted: 04 Jan 2019 07:29 AM PST With the arrival of both the Sony Alpha A7R III at the back end of 2017 and the more enthusiast-orientated Alpha A7 III in early 2018, speculation has been growing as to when we're likely to see an update to the more video-focused Alpha A7S II. Launched back in 2015, the Alpha A7S II is starting to look like the odd one out in the range, with the likes of Panasonic's Lumix GH5 and GH5S having the edge when it comes to video capture. Don't get us wrong, it's still a solid option, but not our first choice for 4K video capture. So what can we expect to see from a Alpha A7S III? With limited rumors floating around at the moment, we've tried to distill what we do know into one handy place, as well as using our own tech knowledge to build a picture of how the Alpha A7S III might look. Sony Alpha A7S III: sensor
SonyAlphaRumors.com has gleaned information from two trusted sources that potentially reveals some of the spec we're likely to see in an Alpha A7S III. While the resolution of the new sensor isn't known, it's rumored to have a stacked CMOS design with integral memory, while the sensor will be technically superior to the one in the flagship Alpha A9. What's our guess on resolution? If Sony is intending to have the Alpha A7S III shoot 4K footage and nothing higher, then we could see resolution stick around the 12MP pixel count that we've seen with both the A7S and A7S II. A higher resolution isn't necessary for a primarily video-orientated camera, with the pay-off being larger pixels for greater light gathering capabilities. Should Sony try and push this further and launch a 6K (even if its downsampled to 4K) or an 8K capable camera, then a higher-resolution sensor than this will be needed. For 6K you'd need a sensor with at least a 24MP resolution, while 8K would demand a sensor resolution over 33.1MP. Interestingly, details of a new Sony 36MP sensor has leaked online that's capable of shooting 8K, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that we could see an 8K enabled Sony Alpha A7S III. Sony Alpha A7S III: video features
We're expecting a big improvement in video features for the Alpha A7S III. Currently the A7S II can record UHD 4K video (not DCI 4K which is slightly wider at 4,096 x 2,160 pixels), while it can only do this up to 30p. The A7S II is also only capable of 4:2:0 8-bit recording at 100Mbps internally (though it can record externally at 4:2:2 8-bit), while the likes of the Lumix GH5S is able to record at 4:2:2 10-bit at up to 400Mbps. With that in mind, we'd certainly expect to see DCI 4K capture at 60p, while we wouldn't be surprised to see 4K HDR video recording at 60p. We'd also expect to see the A7S III record 4:2:2 10-bit internally as well. Interestingly, according to SonyAlphaRumors, Sony is finalizing a new H.265-based professional codec. Known as XEVC, and a successor of XAVC, the new codec is rumored to include 12-bit 4K and 12-bit 8K 4:4:4 capabilities, while 1080p Full HD can be captured at 240fps and 10-bit. We'll likely see the new codec in Sony's high-end FS7 camcorder replacement first, according to SonyAddict, but it could find its way onto the forthcoming Alpha A7S III as well depending on what sensor Sony opts for. Finally, it would also be good to see Sony lift the 30min restriction when recording video and offer unlimited recording. Sony Alpha A7S III: design
Just as the A7S II shared the same design as A7R II and A7 II, we expect the A7S III to use the same body as the current A7R III and A7 III. This will mean that the new video-focused camera will gain the same refinements as we've seen with the other two models. This includes the addition of a multi-selector joystick that greatly improves the handling of the camera, with AF point selection that much quicker to assign. Another bit of good news is the arrival of a dedicated AF-On button on the rear of the Alpha A7 III, making back-button focusing much easier, while the eye sensor is now deactivated when the rear screen is pulled away from the body. This means it's possible to shoot waist-level images without the feed cutting out and rather unhelpfully swapping to the EVF. If the same body design is used as the A7R III and A7 III, it'll make the body of the A7S III a touch thicker than the A7S II as well. Expect to see a predominantly magnesium construction, but it will be interesting to see if the back panel of the A7S III is forged from magnesium like the A7R III, or Sony opts for plastic like the A7 III instead. Sony Alpha A7S III: viewfinder and rear display
We're not expecting the A7S III to enjoy the same 3.8 million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF) as the A7R III, we reckon the 2.3 million-dot EVF will get a magnification upgrade like the A7 III enjoyed, increasing from 0.71x to 0.78x. As we've seen with other recently announced Sony cameras, the rear 3.0-inch tilt-angle display is likely to offer touchscreen control, which should make both shooting and reviewing images and footage that much easier. Sony Alpha A7S III: release date and price
We could see the Alpha A7S III announced as early as CES 2019 later this month, though Sony might be tempted to hold this back for a more video-orientated trade show like NAB in April. If that's too late, we could Sony opt to reveal it at Japan's CP+ imaging show at the end of February. Cost is a bit trickier to predict. The Alpha A7S II is currently around $2,399/£2,299, but this has seen the price drop quite a bit since launch, so we'd expect to see an A7S III launched around $2,999/£2,849. We're listing all of the best Switch deals right here and we'll be on the lookout for the best bundles with extra games, controllers and other accessories. We've just added a whole new batch of them to this guide. Scroll past the bundles on this page and we'll show you prices on extra Joy-Con and Pro controllers and Nintendo Switch memory cards too. If you want to play online multiplayer and get other benefits like free games you'll want to pick up a Nintendo Switch Online subscription deal. US bundles are small in number this week, but we've rounded up the best ones, including packs with extra controllers, Labo kits and Mario Tennis Aces. In the UK you can find plenty with the best Nintendo Switch games like Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and more all with a decent discount too. You'll find all the best Nintendo Switch bundles from reliable retailers below. If you're looking for another dose of Nintendo's handheld happiness then maybe you want to consider a cheap 3DS deal too. We have a dedicated page of Nintendo Switch prices for our Australian readers too. The latest Nintendo Switch dealsWant to know where to buy a Nintendo Switch? Check out our comparison chart below for the latest Nintendo Switch prices. Below that you'll find the best value Nintendo Switch bundles with games/accessories. Don't forget, on its own, the MSRP/RRP Nintendo Switch price is $299/£279, so you don't want to pay more than that unless you're getting some extras. Nintendo Switch bundles (USA)We've highlighted our picks of the best Nintendo Switch bundles below. Just be aware that the game bundles don't really offer much of a discount over buying the items separately. We'll steer you clear of console bundles that actively charge you more than the regular combined RRP (not cool, guys!). Nintendo Switch bundles (UK)The UK scene for discounted Nintendo Switch deals is quite competitive thanks to the large number of retailers trying to get your business. We usually find a strong selection of bundles every week nowadays, even in those quieter times of year not particularly known for sales. So take a look below for discounts on packages with games, hardware and accessories. As with any new console we imagine you're wanting to know a bit more about the console before you put any money down. So in addition to finding the best Nintendo Switch deals, we're going to help bring in answers to the burning questions. What are the Joy-Con controllers? The Joy-Con controller is actually a pair of controllers that attach to the sides the the Nintendo Switch when not in use or when playing in tablet form away from the TV. When playing the Nintendo Switch on the TV, you can remove them and play with one in each hand. The left hand gets a controller with an analogue stick and d-pad, the right hand handles the one with a second analogue and the usual A, B, X and Y face buttons. Or you and a friend can use one each in multiplayer games with the d-pad doubling up as impromptu face buttons. You get a pair with the console, but you might want to buy more to allow extra players to get involved in games like Mario Kart 8, FIFA 18 and many more. Or maybe you just fancy some different colors for your own use. Extra Joy-Con dealsWhat's the Joy-Con Grip controller? The Joy-Con Grip is an additional accessory that joins the two Joy-Con controllers together, forming something something a bit more solid for you to hold thanks to the extended handles and plastic block between the two sides. The square dimension form-factor may remind older gamers of the Dreamcast controller, while everyone else will mainly be thinking how it resembles an odd-looking dog face. Nintendo is providing one in the box with the Nintendo Switch, so you won't have to buy one separately. This won't charge your controller though and doesn't have a battery pack. Nintendo Switch Pro controller dealsYes and it doesn't come with the console. But you won't actually need one to play any games, so don't feel pressured in to buying one. The Nintendo Switch Pro controller is a more traditional-style pad and launched alongside the Nintendo Switch. Prices aren't cheap though, starting around $69.99/£64.99. There's currently no sign of a Nintendo Switch Premium Edition console with one included. Do I need to buy extra controllers for multiplayer on Nintendo Switch?Possibly not! Remember how the Joy-Con controller splits in two? Turn them sideways and you get two basic controllers, each with their own analogue stick and face buttons - the d-pad acts as face functions on the left controller. So far we've seen 2K's NBA series, Snipper Clips and Mario Kart being used this way for local multiplayer in both docked and tablet modes. So you get multiplayer functionality straight out of the box with no additional purchase required. However, if you want to play four-player games, then you're going to need to invest in an extra pair of Joy-Con controllers or some Pro controllers. We'd buy the Joy-Cons as a pair (see our comparison chart above) as you'll save a bit of cash over buying them separately. Better yet, if your friends own a Switch, ask them to bring their controllers to the party! Super Mario Odyssey dealsThis has been one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch so far and an absolute must for Mario and platforming fans. Like Zelda below though, this being a first-party Nintendo title, it's taking forever to go down in price. It's slowly happening though, so we've rounded up the cheapest Super Mario Odyssey prices for you below. If you're not getting this game in a bundle, we'd strongly advise picking it up separately as soon as possible. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild dealsThe reviews have heaped huge praise upon this eagerly awaited launch title, making it an essential purchase for any Nintendo Switch buyer. As with any new console, the prices of the big games can be more expensive than usual. We've shopped around for you though and have found the best prices for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch. Take a look below. Nintendo Switch Micro SD memory card dealsWith only 32GB of internal storage, you'll be wanting to pick up a cheap memory card or two for your new Nintendo Switch for any digital purchases or the inevitable game-fixing patches. Don't fret though, they're actually surprisingly cheap, with even 64GB ones coming in at under £20/$25. What memory cards does the Nintendo Switch need? Those will be Micro SD cards also known as, depending on their size, as MicroSDHC (up to 32GB) or MicroSDXC (up to a huge 2TB soon). Nintendo will be releasing their own branded cards, but you'll be paying more, just for a label. So for now, we'd take a look at this range of cheap MicroSDXC Nintendo Switch-friendly cards. IoT spending to reach new highs in 2019 Posted: 04 Jan 2019 07:05 AM PST Spending on Internet of Things (IoT) technology is set to reach new highs in 2019 as more and more companies invest in connected products. New figures from IDC estimate that $745bn will be spend on IoT systems and services, an increase of 15.4 percent over last year. This includes an estimated $100bn on manufacturing operations, $44.2bn on production asset management, and $44.1 billion on smart homes and $41.7 billion on freight monitoring. The firm adds that it expects IoT spending to maintain a double-digit annual growth rate throughout the 2017-2022 forecast period and surpass the $1 trillion mark in 2022. IoT spendingIDC predicts certain industries to lead the way more in investing in the IoT as more use cases and services are developed and put into action. It identified discrete manufacturing ($119 billion), process manufacturing ($78 billion), transportation ($71 billion), and utilities ($61 billion) as the top industries set to invest in IoT. This includes freight monitoring fleet management solutions in the transport industry, and smart grids for electricity, gas and water in the utilities sector. "Adoption of IoT is happening across industries, in governments, and in consumers' daily lives. We are increasingly observing how data generated by connected devices is helping businesses run more efficiently, gain insight into business processes, and make real-time decisions," said Carrie MacGillivray, vice president, Internet of Things and Mobility at IDC. "The next chapter of IoT is just beginning as we see a shift from digitally enabling the physical to automating and augmenting the human experience with a connected world." IDC notes that the United States and China will be the global leaders for IoT spending in 2019, contributing $194 billion and $182 billion respectively. They will be followed by Japan ($65.4 billion), Germany ($35.5 billion), Korea ($25.7 billion), France ($25.6 billion), and the United Kingdom ($25.5 billion).

Fitness Boxing for Nintendo Switch could be the personal trainer you've been waiting for Posted: 04 Jan 2019 06:53 AM PST Christmas has come and gone, and the answer to who ate all the pies is finally clear. It was me… I ate all the pies, well one pie, just a really big one. The trouble is that getting fit is hard, just getting up and going to the gym in the first place takes effort. Thankfully there is a brand-new fitness regime coming to rescue us all from ourselves, and it’s on the Nintendo Switch. Fitness and gaming aren’t exactly natural bedfellows. Nevertheless, we have had a few attempts in the last few years - remember the Wii Fit? Fitness Boxing is the latest in the strange sub-genre of fitness games. It has a virtual trainer telling you what to do and when, you can even choose who you want to train you for that extra personal feel. As a personal trainer, I’ve been training both myself and other people for years, and it is rare that one of these games genuinely feels like a workout. More often than not they might be challenging (balancing on the Wii Fit board was tough work) but it will never get you working up a sweat. A good workout should push you. If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you (so the saying goes in the fitness circles). A good workout should really test your limits, it should make you wish for the end. After, you should feel all warm and fuzzy – probably a little gross too – as well as full of them good hormones. After all, without some kind of positive feeling afterwards you’re unlikely to actually stick to the program. The trouble is that most fitness games are more likely to leave you bored and sweatless. This is not the case with Fitness Boxing, the workouts are actually pretty challenging, even on the lowest difficulty you’ll find yourself watching the clock tick down and wondering when the weird renditions will end. The exercises start off as just throwing basic jabs and straights, but escalate pretty quickly. Fitness firstBefore you get to the hard stuff, the game takes you through some stretches to make sure you are ready to go. The instructor gives clear explanations for everything you need to do. The default setting for them is to be a mirror image. This makes things really easy to follow along with, though you can change it if you don’t like it. The virtual instructors are all a little more robotic than most personal trainers, but there is a weird charm to the slightly Siri-esque delivery of instructions that makes them easy to listen to. On the subject of the instructor, you’ll be happy to know that they are all fully customizable. There are six different ones to choose from, from the ridiculously hench, to the incredibly lithe, you have plenty of options. You can even change their eye, hair, and skin color. All a little bit weird, but much better than having to look at the same boring real-life persona trainer. You unlock new clothes for them by hitting certain milestones, so you can have the waifu or husbando of your dreams telling you to work harder. The training itself is simple enough, all you have to do is keep bouncing in your stance and throwing punches to the beat. Initially it is just the occasional punch here and there, but each completed workout nets you new things. Unlocking new songs means having harder workouts, the songs themselves are stripped down versions of pop songs, not offensive at least. The progression feels pretty good and helps to keep you challenging the next workout with gusto. Though this is all with the daily workout. Things get a little more free-form in free training. Sweat sessionFree training lets you pick single or multi-player to start with, just in case you want to feel silly and sweat it out with someone else. You can then choose a song to workout to – each of which is a weird instrumental version of a well-known song – or you can choose a workout based on what area you want to hit. With the songs, you can even choose to do a normal speed or a faster version if you want a challenge. The faster versions are pretty funny as the instructor speeds up too, leading to incredibly fast Gilmore Girls speed talking. The sheer level of customization means you can really control how you get fitter. It is much easier to stick to a workout plan when you have the option to choose how long you are training for. The whole thing is incredibly thorough, with every part mapped out and no horrible difficulty spikes, which your body will appreciate. The constant stream of unlocks helps a lot as well. As you reach the different milestones different instructors will get new clothes to try on, you’ll unlock more songs, and most importantly, you’ll get to the more complicated workouts. When it gets to the more complex stuff, it helps that there is a really comprehensive practice mode if you find you’re struggling with a particular motion, perfect for those with bad coordination. The whole thing is a genuinely effective training program. I can honestly say I would recommend it to my clients as a workout for those days when reaching the gym just isn’t going to happen. It would also be a fantastic way of complimenting any weight training regime. Plus, you can always just pause the game if it is getting too much, something that is never an option with a PT in front of you. You will definitely get fitter if you follow it all along. Just be aware that if you get sweaty palms, you may end up needing new Joy-Cons.

Top 5 upcoming smartphones for January 2019 Posted: 04 Jan 2019 05:46 AM PST 2019 looks like it's going to be an exciting year for the smartphone industry. Brands like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi et al are developing their flagship devices, and we'll be getting several launches over the course of the year. That being said, a number of brands will be launching devices in January itself, so here's our list of the five we're most looking forward to. Honor View 20Already launched in China (as the Honor V20), the Honor View 20 will be launched globally on January 22. It's the brand's first smartphone to feature an in-display hole for the front camera. This camera has a single 25MP sensor, while the dual rear camera has one 48MP primary sensor, along with a secondary Time of Flight sensor. The View 20 sports a 6.4-inch All-View display, and is powered by the company's Kirin 980 processor, with 6GB/8GB of RAM, and 128GB/256GB of internal storage. The device packs a 4000mAh non-removable battery. The 6GB/128GB variant is priced at 2999 Yuan (about Rs 30,000), while the 8GB/128GB model is priced at 3499 Yuan (approximately Rs 35,000) Huawei Y9 (2019)Huawei's Y9 (2019) smartphone will be officially launched in India on January 7, at an event in New Delhi. The device was first showcased in China back in October. The phone was recently teased on Amazon, and the e-commerce giant is taking registrations of interest via the 'Notify Me' button for the same. The Y9 sports a 6.5-inch FullView 3D curved display, and under the hood is the company's own Kirin 710 processor, paired with 3GB/6GB RAM, along with 64GB of internal storage. The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo, with Huawei's EMUI 8.2 skin on top. The device packs a 4000mAh non-removable battery. On both the front and back is a dual camera setup. The rear camera sports one 13MP sensor paired with a 2MP secondary sensor, while the front camera consists of one 16MP sensor and a secondary 2MP sensor. Samsung Galaxy M seriesSamsung is tipped to release its new M-series smartphone in India in January. The current lineup includes three names- M10, M20, and M30. The company has released no information about this new lineup as yet. According to rumours, the Galaxy M10 will sport a 6.5-inch display, and will be powered by the company's own Exynos 7870 processor, paired with 3GB RAM and 16GB/32GB of storage. It will run Google's Android 8.1 Oreo, and will pack a 3400mAh battery. Right now, we know that the M10 will feature a 13MP primary camera sensor at the back, and a 5MP selfie camera. The M20 will have a screen resolution of 2340x1080 pixels, with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it will have an Exynos 7885 chipset paired with a Mali-G71 MP2 GPU. The device will come with 3GB RAM, and 32GB/64GB of internal storage, expandable via micro-SD. The smartphone will run Android 8.1 Oreo with Samsung's Experience UI skin on top. Finally, the M30 will have similar screen resolution and aspect ratio specs to the M20, as well as the same Exynos 7885 processor, paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB/128GB of expandable storage. Redmi Pro 2Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi Pro 2 in China on January 10, although there is no word on when it will come to India. However, considering the popularity of the Redmi brand in India, we can expect it to be soon. Rumour has it that the Redmi Pro 2 will be the first 48MP rear camera offering from the brand. The device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC. According to media sports, it may sport a 'punch-hole' display similar to the Honor View 20 or the Samsung Galaxy A8s. Lenovo Z5 ProLenovo's upcoming Z5 Pro smartphone will be the world's first to feature 12GB of RAM. The phone was showcased during the launch of the Lenovo Z5, with the company stating that it would launch the Z5 Pro in China sometime in January. Reports suggest that it will also be launched globally in the same month. The Lenovo Z5 Pro sports a 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a slider design setup. Under the hood, you'll find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, paired with an Adreno 640 GPU. The device will feature 12GB of RAM, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor.

What to expect from 5G at CES 2019 Posted: 04 Jan 2019 05:39 AM PST The timing of the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is curious. No sooner has the world of technology finished its well-deserved Christmas break, it is forced to recover from its seasonal excesses to reconvene in Las Vegas. As ever, CES will showcase many of the products that will infiltrate our homes, vehicles and beyond during the following 12 months, helping to provide an insight into what the major tech trends of 2019. Despite many major announcements and launches taking place a few months later at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, there’s usually plenty at CES for the mobile industry to sink its teeth into. This year, that’s truer than ever because one topic is likely to outshine all others: 5G. 5G at CES 2019The first 5G networks went live in the US late last year, but these are so far limited in scope. Verizon was the first, but its 5G service only offers Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband in a number of major US cities. On December 21, AT&T was the second carrier to go live, offering mobile hotspot services in parts of 12 US cities in what seemed to be a last-ditch attempt to honour its pledge to launch in 2018. This year will see the arrival of the first compatible 5G smartphones and the launch of fully-fledged 5G mobile networks in the US and beyond. At CES 2019, expect to see Verizon and others talk up the potential of 5G networks, while device and component manufacturers share more information about their wares. But given CES is predominantly a show about consumer electronics, it is probable that many of the smartphone announcements will be saved for MWC. Instead, the focus at CES is likely to be on 5G applications on other devices. Although 5G will enable ultrafast mobile speeds of up to 1Gbps, the fact is that 4G is suitable for most people’s needs and that foundational work will actually improve LTE services. It will take several years for the mobile applications that require 5G networks to function to appear. The possibilitiesIn the short term, it will be enterprise services and applications on devices other than smartphones that will benefit from the capacity and reliability improvements afforded by 5G. At CES, this is where the real 5G innovations will be found. One of the other key trends will be smart home technologies, so expect to hear about how 5G will impact this fast-developing field, while thee is a whole exhibition devoted to how 5G will impact smart cities. 5G washing machines and trash cans might not exactly get the heart racing, but in a future where everything is connected Expect to hear about how 5G will change the entertainment and automotive industries, as well as other equally transformative technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (VR), all of which will require the low latency that 5G offers. Component manufacturers like Qualcomm and Intel have already detailed how they plan to support 5G devices and applications, but both will have a significant presence at CES. That’s not to say we won’t see a couple of 5G smartphones too. There is huge incentive for fast-mover advantage among both operators and manufacturers and it may be an opportunity to stand out from the crowd ahead of MWC. Samsung and Sony could be among those to watch. Bu above all, CES will be a chance for the mobile industry to explain why 5G is so significant. Explanations of what 5G is and what it will become have been subject to dispute and hyperbole and in an industry that finds it difficult to convey the benefits of a generational shift other than in terms of speed, this is critical. 5G is more than a marketing term and it’s more than simply faster smartphones. It represents a shift in how all individuals and industries, not just technology, experience connectivity. And its why 5G will be one of, if not the, key talking point of CES 2019.
