First proof that the Samsung Galaxy S11 will be faster than the iPhone 11 Pro Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:56 PM PST The forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S11 is going to be more powerful than the Apple's iPhone 11 Pro, at least according to our benchmarks of the Snapdragon 865 chipset. Qualcomm, the chipmaker behind the Snapdragon 865, gave TechRadar the chance to test out an 865-loaded reference device, and with that, we ran all of the usual benchmarking applications: Geekbench, GFxBench and AnTutu to name a few. What's important are these two things:
Without further ado, let's check out Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 reference device, its specs and the benchmarks that come from it. Snapdragon 865 reference device and specsTechnically, this is the first Snapdragon 865-powered smartphone, although you'll never be able to buy it. It's just a reference device that Qualcomm uses to demo the capabilities of its brand-new chipset. It's also perforated with holes on the back, but other than that, the partially-visible guts of the handset are exactly what you'd want from a phone in 2020: a Quad HD+ 2880 x 1440 resolution, 12GB of LP5 dual rank RAM, an octa-core CPU (4xA77 + 4xA55) and 128GB of internal storage. Before we set out to benchmark the Snapdragon 865 and gain insight into what the Samsung Galaxy S11 could be capable of, Qualcomm reps did note that there's a "performance mode," which speeds up the chipset while draining the battery a bit faster. That did make a difference in some of our tests, as you'll notice. Snapdragon 865 raise hopes for the Galaxy S11When we test smartphones at TechRadar, we often rely on benchmark apps like Geekbench 5, and it has some good news for the Galaxy S11 thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865: its multi-core score assessment shows that Android phones will be able to outpace Apple's A13 Bionic chipset when it comes to complex workloads. With a multi-core score of solid 3,450, the Snapdragon 865 reference phone pulled ahead of our iPhone 11 Pro Max, which had a multi-core score of 3,337. Large tasks like video rendering, 3D gaming and image processing benefit from higher scores. The single-core score, however, told a different story with a 931 Geekbench 5 score on Qualcomm's reference device. The iPhone 11 Pro Max got a rather appropriate 1331 when we re-ran tests today using the latest version of iOS 13. The single-core compute score is better for simple tasks, like mobile web browsing, which can't be broken up to take advantage of eight cores at once. Single cores are becoming less important, and Qualcomm is putting emphasis on the multi-core score, GPU and AI chips within its multi-fanged Snapdragon 865 chipset. For these tests, we turned to tools like GFxBench and AnTuTU for GPU benchmarks and AITutu and Ludashi AI Mark for newer AI tests. All four met or exceeded the scores that Qualcomm had in its 'expected' score range. The pre-installed GFxBench Manhattan offscreen test gave us a score of 89, AnTuTU's GPU test ran topped 221,435, Ludashi AI Mark went above 100K at 105,072 and AITuTu went to 455,235 after three consecutive tests on each app. Translation? We're expecting powerful graphics and AI performance from Android phones in 2020, and the heavy tasks run by multi-core processors will catch up to and slightly exceed what Apple is capable of doing on its iPhones right now. Qualcomm's chipsets still lag behind when it comes to simpler tasks, but as app developers spread workloads to more cores, the single-core score is becoming less important than the combined effort of an eight-core mobile chipset. A good sign for Android phones in 2020Speed and processing power aren't everything. But there were so many close calls on our best phones list in 2019 that any edge could shake up our rankings in 2020. The iPhone 11 was in many ways more capable than the many, many Galaxy phones in 2019, but the value of Samsung's devices were a win when it came to storage and price – that's what swayed us in the end. Little factors can make a big difference. We're seeing a powerful yet efficient 5G-capable chipset from Qualcomm, so even if you're a fan of iPhone series, it's going to push Apple, Huawei and other non-Snapdragon-using smartphone manufacturers to compete. And that's a win-win for consumers no matter how they shop for phones.

Best Samsung Galaxy Watch bands: how to restyle your wearable Posted: 16 Dec 2019 01:04 PM PST The Samsung Galaxy Watch remains one of the smartest wearables on the market, even a couple years after its release. Its thoughtful styling make it an absolute pleasure to wear and its wide range of features mean it's still one of the most useful smartwatches on the market. It's so good that it's held the top spot on our best smartwatch list since it came out - and through today. But as with all these watches it's nice to add some flair and personality to your Samsung Galaxy Watch, and one of the best ways to do so is to pick out a strap that revitalizes its whole look. Perhaps you want to switch straps to match outfits and dress up or down for the occasion - and if that occasion is a workout, maybe a silicone band for exercise while saving a metal strap for nights out. The good news is that there are plenty of custom options for Samsung watches that allow you to bring out some extra personality in yours, so we've been out hunting for the best bands and straps to make your watch reflect your personality. The Galaxy Watch comes in two sizes - 46mm and 42mm - so we'll be clear about compatibility with each band. If you want an even smaller watch, we recommend the sportier Galaxy Watch Active 2, which starts at 40mm and has a digital haptic dial instead of a physical one. These are products that we haven't had in our test labs, but based on our experts' opinion and knowledge of the most reputable brands around, we think these are worth looking at. Our selections, ranked from cheapest to most expensive, take into account online reviews, brand reputation, product capability and unique features, to help you pick through the maze of choices available to you. The Kades Soft Silicone Band is one that allows easy removal, which means you can swap it out with different bands depending on your mood, or what you're going to be doing during the day. The silicone band is ideal for heavy workouts, as it's breathable and waterproof. The pin clasp means that it's easy to put on or remove, as well as keeping the watch nice and secure on your wrist. A massive range of colors and versions for both sizes of Galaxy Watches make this an excellent choice for those looking for a good all-round band on a budget. It's probably not much of a stretch to say that the MroTech Sport Loop borrows from the really excellent Apple Watch straps which use a similar 'hook and loop' fastening system to make them super-adjustable and simple to put on. Nice design and a good selection of colors mean this is a great way to pick your style and make your watch stand out. MroTech has straps for both sizes of Galaxy Watch too, and like many of the bands here they will fit a wide range of smartwatches that use the same size fitting. A sensible price and great design make this a really nice choice for many people. Look, there's no point pretending we don't still love the Milanese loop strap design. The delicate look combined with its "wear with everything" practicality makes these styles pretty compelling to almost anyone. Perhaps not ideal for intense workouts, but a pretty good all-rounder nonetheless. And the Goseth is an affordable option too, giving you bags of style without decimating your bank balance. The magnetic clasp is convenient and simple but by its very nature doesn't lend itself to high-stress situations, so perhaps invest in something else if you're always running marathons. For a modest price the TRUMiRR Stainless Steel strap brings a rather fetching two-color design to the Galaxy Watch. The high-end look makes this an ideal pairing with Samsung's super-fancy smartwatch and should catch some admiring looks from friends. We also really like the hassle-free clasp, which requires you press buttons on either side of the strap to release it. This should keep your watch securely on your wrist and prevent any accidents - essential when you're dealing with an expensive smartwatch! It's not the most cost-effective band you can buy and there are loads of third-party silicone straps that are cheaper, but for a lot of people, sticking with Samsung for your Galaxy Watch accessories is essential. We do however really like the design and color of the Blue version of this strap. While the Black and Natural Grey are both fine in their own way, the blue color makes this strap a little more interesting. The traditional watch-style notched clasp isn't the most funky we've seen, but it will keep the watch on securely. For some reason the color options are much better for the 20mm straps (which fit the 42mm Samsung Galaxy Watch) than the 22mm ones. Anyone who loves a nice bright color will enjoy the Violet and Pink bands, but we think the audacious Yellow is absolutely banging. Samsung's silicone bands are well-suited to exercise and should last a long time, but the traditional strap clasp is a bit frustrating as these designs can be a little uncomfortable for workouts. We'd prefer to see an Apple-style clip, but we can live with Samsung's choice too. Samsung knows that people may want to swap watch straps regularly, so the Hybrid Sport Strap allows for very quick removal and installation. That's super-handy if you want to use different bands for different outfits or activities. The combination of both leather and rubber means that the Hybrid Sport is hard-wearing but looks as classy as an all-leather strap does. You get a splash of color, which can either be bright and bold or a bit more conservative - ideal for all tastes. It's a bit expensive, especially compared to third-party bands, but it does offer some of the nicest design we've seen on a watch strap. JBL is crowdfunding headphones that never need to be plugged in Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:50 AM PST JBL is crowdfunding a new pair of solar-powered headphones on Indiegogo called the JBL Reflect Eternal which could potentially never run out of battery. The headphones are similar to the JBL's Live series of on-ear cans and come by way of a partnership with Exeger, the makers of the Exeger Powerfoil which is specifically engineered to generate power with light of all kinds, from indoor luminescence to indirect sunlight. The obvious caveat to the supposedly 'unlimited' battery life is that you’ll need to actually go outside or sit near a window in the office for at least two and a half hours a day for the headphones to stay fully charged. That said, you’ll still get the maximum 24 hours of battery life from one hour of sunlight according to JBL’s website - which, frankly, should be more than enough to last you until you go outside again. The JBL Reflect Eternal will be available in two colors (red and green) and, according to the product’s Indiegogo page, should be available starting in October 2020 for $169 (around £125, AU$245). Greener headphones for a greener worldShould they work as advertised, JBL has a potential hit on its hands - not only is this a great solution for millions of commuters who don't want to bother with charging their headphones at the end of the day, but it's also a perfect fit for environmentalists who want to take more steps to be carbon-neutral. Working as advertised could be the key issue here, however. The fact that JBL is using Indiegogo to crowdfund the headphones is slightly suspicious. Crowdfunding allows the manufacturer to hedge its bets should the final product not be exactly what it promised. The company can start seeing returns on all that R&D investment when folks immediately invest in the Indiegogo while simultaneously drumming up pre-orders well ahead of the product's launch next year. Ultimately, like all products on Indiegogo, the JBL Reflect Eternal are kind of a gamble. We've known enough crowdfunding tragedies to be skeptical that these will see the light of day. That said, if you're a betting kind of person and want to save $70 on the headphones ahead of launch, you can reserve a pair for just $99 right now on Indiegogo.

Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:42 AM PST Born out of the difficulties of a challenging data migration project and getting siloed teams to work together better, DevOps has evolved into a movement to facilitate software development and its implementation, while improving reliability and increasing security. While the process of combining teams is hardly seamless, when done successfully, DevOps delivers significant benefits across businesses whether they are large or small. DevOps combines the words Development and Operations, with the term originating in 2009 and attributed to Patrick Debois, who is widely considered the ‘Godfather of DevOps’ and is the founder of the popular DevOpsDays conference. Debois’ philosophical approach to software development and operations grew from his experience the year prior with a data migration project for the Belgian government, where the project developers and the system administrators were simply not on the same page. After this, Debois created the aforementioned conference to share this experience, and a movement was born, which came to be known by its still popular Twitter hashtag #DevOps. Linguistics aside, DevOps goes by various definitions, and in the end, is just a little different at any given organization. In general, DevOps is a term that describes a collection of principles, tools and even culture that endeavors to unify the development of software and its implementation in operations. The goal of this to make an organization more nimble, so that products – like apps – can be developed at a faster pace than software is traditionally created. With DevOps, the usual barriers between the development and operations groups at an organization are completely removed, as these two traditionally separate teams get merged into a single group. This way, engineers can work on a product throughout its lifecycle, and not just during development to then hand it off to others with less expertise, and less knowledge of what happened in the earlier stages of the project. DevOps in practiceDevOps runs the risk of becoming a word without meaning as the industry rallies to attribute it to every product and service in their portfolio. The reality is that I can't sell you DevOps, and you can't buy it. DevOps is more than simply automation. It includes things like culture. It's a way of working that values collaboration with a shared view of success. As the name implies, this collaboration is primarily between developers and operators, but it is not restricted to that. DevOps means that you see the end to end delivery system from concept to production, your DevOps scope is any group that are involved in that workflow. So if you're willing to make a cultural investment in changing how you work, then you can start to implement some of the working practices that DevOps recommends. Integrating DevOpsBut before you jump head first into identifying work and managing constraints, ensure you know why you want to make DevOps part of how you succeed at IT services. Many successful implementations have been driven by a desire to: • Reduce time to market for new products and features • Build more agility to adapt to internal and external influences • Unlock cost savings offered by cloud platforms • Eliminate the risk of shadow IT services Successful DevOps adoptions are easy to spot. They are the organisations that talk about making tens and even hundreds of code releases into production every day, where there seems to be a constant flow of new features to keep users engaged and loyal. The leaders here are internet giants like Google, Facebook, Netflix, Etsy and more. But whilst many of these grab headlines, there are large numbers of success stories where organisations require internet and web services as a significant portion of their go to market channel. Is your organisation a good fit? From the eclectic list above it should be apparent that DevOps is not an exclusive club, anyone can pick it up and try to make positive changes in their business. However, there are some common traits that identify the strong fit candidates for change: • Existing strong culture of collaboration and open communication • An executive leadership team who sees IT as a business enabler • Sponsorship from a high enough level to allow challenges to status quo • Revenue and brand derived substantially from web and mobile channels • Established organisations who view internet start-ups as a threat • Start-ups who want to be more nimble than their established competition • Applications that are self-built and developed on open technology All of these provide compelling business drivers to embrace change as an opportunity to create an advantage in your industry. But the transformation will be hard at times and leaders who are sponsoring these initiatives need patience and clear expectations to ensure the team are given every opportunity to succeed. As with cloud transformations, DevOps transformations will not be universally successful. In fact you should expect to fail at times. The trick is to fail fast, learn and repeat. Removing fear of failure is important, especially when deep-rooted in a business culture where incident reviews are a blame session rather than a learning outcome. This is why it is vital that you must commit to the culture as well as the working practices. However, the risk of not addressing DevOps does carry risks itself. If your competition gets faster to market with features and products, what does this mean for your business? If your competition can open up financial advantages by increasing operational efficiency without impacting margins, how will you react? DevOps adoption should not be driven by fear, but not making it part of your IT plans should be a well-managed risk in your organisation's strategy.
Where to startSo hopefully, you've reached the point where you're interested in getting started. Here are some prompting questions to get you going: • Which application am I going to build this model around? Don't do this wholesale across your IT estate. The application and teams around them are key factors in success, identify a candidate application and create a bubble of autonomy around it. • Can I draw out the entire process from idea to production release? Simply drawing out your processes is a great way to identify stakeholders and eliminate waste. Never assume you have all the right people in the room in the first meeting! • Where are my constraints? The key to increasing flow through a system is to manage constraints. Creating capacity either side without addressing the bottleneck will not increase output. Work out which parts of your system slow you down and improve them. • Do I have the skills to execute this? DevOps skill sets are in high demand right now. Take time to understand if you have the right resources to succeed? If you don't, make plans for additional hiring, training, or look to introduce a third party who can help offload some of the core functions. Integrating securityA key concern with any IT infrastructure is going to be security, and sometimes this gets combined with DevOps - this triple combination gets referred to as a related clipped compound term: DevSecOps. This integration of several teams contributes to this ‘leaner and meaner’ approach to software development and rollout. Traditionally, software development, and its implementation, has been a laborious, manual-based process which is unsurprisingly sluggish. Today’s ever changing market innovates at breakneck speed, and the advantages go to those organizations that can keep up with this rapid pace – rather than risk the near certainty of being left behind. DevOps uses tools to speed up these processes, for example, using technology stack and tooling to increase efficiency and reliability in software development. These tools also facilitate the deployment of code, which can be done from within the same team without the involvement of others, and this also contributes to the rapid pace of innovation and deployment of this DevOps model. DevOps engineers involve themselves with more than just code automation. They also get stuck in with the implementation, which involves their company’s servers, including the more affordable open source operating system servers, including Linux and BSD. DevOps at work: an exampleNow, let’s take a look at an example of DevOps at work. Allstate is a Fortune 500 company, with the origins of this insurance giant dating back to 1931. However, it is hardly nimble, with 16,000 employees, many of whom are out in the field. The firm’s goal became to get its mobile workforce the latest tools to be able to work with a greater level of efficiency. Simultaneously, there was also a second goal of enabling better self-service for its customers, so that they would be able to make claims, and track them as they are processed. While cost savings were reportedly the company’s previous priority, with the DevOps approach, the more recent focus has been on customer retention, and differentiated software features. Through the teamwork and common values that are central to the DevOps approach, the company has focused on product development on its app, and keeping it current with the ability to deploy the latest features rapidly. On the horizon, Allstate also plans to continue using the DevOps approach to implement Internet of Things sensors in customer’s vehicles, using analytics to assess their driving habits. From the significant number of Allstate DevOps jobs currently listed, Allstate clearly continues to embrace this approach. Speed and scaleWith the inherent advantages of speed of deployment, better reliability, the ability to scale, and integrated security, it is not surprising that many organizations have embraced the DevOps approach. Last year a survey of business technology decision makers was used to create the 2018 State of DevOps report. Some useful statistics to highlight include:
While there are inherent advantages of DevOps, it is still a tool that needs to be applied selectively to the correct situation, and there is always the danger that DevOps does not deliver on expectations. However, this is often because the business involved continues to silo its staff and so suffer from departmentalization. Breaking down silos and combining teams requires a cultural shift; after all, the software development and Quality Assurance folks were on different teams for a reason originally, and they do not automatically share the same skillset just because we push their desks closer together. Teams do not necessarily want to work with each other, and it takes time for this more modern DevOps approach to bed in, with a healthy dose of mutual respect needed for them to get along towards a common goal, and less concern about which of the former teams are running the show. This type of transition does not commonly occur overnight, at least with most organizations. Born out of the difficulties of a challenging data migration project and getting siloed teams to work together better, DevOps has evolved into a movement to facilitate software development and its implementation, while improving reliability and increasing security. While the process of combining teams is hardly seamless, when done successfully, DevOps delivers significant benefits across businesses whether they are large or small.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 gets a hefty discount ahead of the holidays Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:20 AM PST The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is only a couple of months old at this point, and it saw a somewhat disappointing launch back in October 2019. But that just means you can already save a hefty sum on the Windows 10 tablet just in time for the holiday rush. Right now on Amazon, you can pick up the Surface Pro 7 with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD for just $699 – $200 off the list price. It's important to note, however, that Microsoft isn't including the keyboard at this level, something we'll never not complain about. Now while the Surface Pro 7 wasn't exactly graced with the best review from TechRadar, that doesn't mean it's a bad device. It's definitely more than capable of powering through any and all everyday computing workloads you throw it, with one of the most beautiful displays on a Windows tablet. The disappointment is entirely in how similar it is to the 2018 Surface Pro 6. So, if you're on the market for a svelte Windows tablet that has absolutely zero restrictions on what you can do with it, the Surface Pro 7 is still definitely worth your time and money. It would absolutely make for an amazing Holiday gift, too, as it's a media consumption behemoth.

Smart lock security issues leave the door open for hackers Posted: 16 Dec 2019 11:06 AM PST Consultants at the cybersecurity firm F-Secure have discovered an exploitable design flaw in one brand of smart lock that can allow an attacker to easily pick the device. Since the smart lock itself is unable to receive new firmware updates, the manufacturer can't patch the device to mitigate the flaw leaving users at risk unless they decide to physically uninstall their smart lock. F-Secure Consulting discovered the flaw in the KeyWe Smart Lock which allows users to open and close doors in their home by using an app on their smartphone. The firm found that they were able to exploit improperly designed communication protocols to intercept the secret passphrase sent between the lock and KeyWe's app.
F-Secure Consulting's Krzysztof Marciniak helped develop the hack used to unlock the smart lock and he provided further insight on the discovery, saying: “The lock has several protection mechanisms. Unfortunately, the lock’s design makes bypassing these mechanisms to eavesdrop on messages exchanged by the lock and app fairly easy for attackers – leaving it open to a relatively simple attack. There’s no way to mitigate this, so accessing homes protected by the lock is a safe bet for burglars able to replicate the hack. All attackers need is a little know-how, a device to help them capture traffic – which can be purchased from many consumer electronic stores for as little as 10 dollars – and a bit of time to find the lock owners.” IoT securityThe security issues F-Secure found in the KeyWe Smart Lock are yet another example of the security challenges manufacturers and consumers have begun to face as IoT devices have flooded the market. According to one recent estimate, there will be 125bn devices connected to the internet by 2025 but as IoT devices see increased adoption, security issues will also arise. The KeyWe Smart Lock has several useful security features such as data encryption that were implemented to prevent unauthorized parties from accessing system-critical information like the secret passphrase. However, F-Secure Consulting was able to easily circumvent the system's security features. Unfortunately the device cannot receive firmware updates so owners of the KeyWe Smart Lock will either have to replace the lock or live with the risk of an attacker hacking it to gain access to their home. To prevent falling victim to this attack or similar ones, Marciniak recommends that consumers consider the security implications of internet connected devices before replacing their offline devices with online versions.

Apple Arcade's new annual subscription option includes two months for free Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:55 AM PST Now you can subscribe to Apple Arcade, Apple’s multi-device subscription gaming service, for a year in advance - and if you do, you’ll get two months free. In other words, instead of re-upping your monthly $5 / £5 / AU$8 subscription fee, Apple’s giving you a $10 discount if you commit to a full year. The new rate was first spotted by iFun.de. It’s a crafty move for Apple to lock folks in: the service had its own spot in the limelight at WWDC 2019 and went live shortly after the launch of the iPhone 11 series, but we haven’t heard much about it since. That’s partially because of Apple Arcade’s strict criteria to only include new games as a way to distinguish itself from other gaming services. And since all games are required to run on current iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple TVs, the service isn’t adding much-hyped AAA titles like, say, those coming to Xbox Game Pass. Apple Arcade’s highest-profile launch, Ultimate Rivals: The Rink, is the debut title from studio Bit Fry Games. Apple Arcade: still a valueApple Arcade’s pitch was simple: microtransaction-free unlimited play from a launch library of 60-odd games that will slowly expand over time, all for a modest monthly fee. Apple has kept its promise thus far, adding 4-6 new games every month or so across a variety of genres. As of now, the catalog has grown to 86 titles. Assuming one or two are games you’d actually buy anyway, the service is a bargain. While it doesn’t have AAA titles, it seems to be a promising showcase for smaller, more thoughtful games - an important (though very select) space in a market that sees dozens of indie games go live on digital storefronts every day. Given gamers’ fickle attention spans as they look from one big release to the next, enticing folks to sign up for a year could be long enough for more consumers to see value in the slowly-growing Apple Arcade - but we’ll have to see how many will be won over for a year of Apple gaming. Get a PS4 controller for under £30 in this Christmas sale Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:24 AM PST PS4 controllers still come at a premium, even after all these years on the market. If you want a second controller to take advantage of all the great co-op games around (hello, Overcooked!), it's a purchase you actually have to consider. Luckily, discounts around this time of year make it an easier sell, and in the UK we've spotted the controller for a good price (not in the UK? Scroll down for the best prices on the DualShock 4 where you are). As the Currys Christmas sale rolls in, the DualShock 4 in its various colours has been discounted to £29.99. Note that this is the same price Currys had it on-sale for during Black Friday. Usually you'll pay north of £30 for this controller, so £29.99 is a good deal. As noted above, you also get six months of Spotify Premium with this purchase, although that's only for new accounts. This is still a terrific controller with or without the freebie, and you can use it with your PC if you'd prefer. Even if you're not into co-op games, you might want another one to play the games in your Steam library. Not in the UK? This is the cheapest external storage per terabyte you can buy Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:08 AM PST If you're on the lookout for a new storage drive, you can grab a Seagate Expansion desktop external hard drive with a 8TB capacity for just under $125 including free shipping from Amazon. The model included in this deal is the STEB8000100, which is a desktop drive rather than a portable one - and comes with an 18-inch USB cable (with a flat end) and an 18W external power supply unit plus a 1-year limited warranty. You can connect it with a compatible device via a USB 3.0 port but doesn’t have any extra external ports.
The drive is preformatted to Windows and Seagate says that users can transfer content at up to 160MBps. It uses a 3.5-inch external hard disk drive based on SMR technology which means that the write speeds are likely to be very slow. External hard disk drives tend to be cheaper than the equivalent internal hard disk drives because of economies of scale. Best DAB radio: which digital radio should you buy? Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:27 AM PST The best DAB radios can fill your home with music, chat, and tons of witty banter. No matter how many years go by – or how many newer, better-sounding audio standards come into vogue – the good ol' digital radio is still going strong. DAB radios also make great gifts for that person who's difficult to buy for, or who doesn't necessarily care about the difference between FLAC and MP3. However, the sheer variety of DAB radios available on the market by now can make finding the right one a pain. To save you the trouble, we've taken the best DAB radios in the country and rounded them up into a single unified list. So whether you're looking for a decent-sounding digital radio for the kitchen, an alarm radio for your bedside table, or a radio you can take on the go, we'll have the best option for you – whatever your budget. Here are the 5 best DAB radios available in the UK today.
The Pure Evoke C-F6 marries modern connectivity options with old-school CD playback, and is just about the best stereo system you can buy today. Easy to set up, a delight to listen to, and featuring just about every bell and whistle you could need from a single-room audio device, this is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a one-stop audio box. With 3-inch stereo speakers and a 20W output, too, it can crank up to party levels while maintaining a rich, balanced sound. Read the full review: Pure Evoke CF-6 review The build quality in the Revo is truly excellent, and so is the sound, though it's how Revo has addressed the needs of real people in real rooms that we like most. The touch-snooze feature, the volume dial and Bluetooth are all brilliantly convenient, though we reserve most praise for the use of an OLED screen that keeps the bedroom dark. The OLED screen uses some great-looking typography, too. Sound is the most important feature and the quality here is precise, warm and powerful. That said, a mono rather than stereo speaker is always a shame, though it does make sense on a bedside table. Read the full review: Revo SuperSignal review Taking your music on the go? Few digital radios have built-in batteries and splash-proof, portable designs, so the PAL+ BT is a bit of a one-off. Its 16 hour battery is simply superb, and makes it a great – though expensive – alternative to a Bluetooth speaker that you might take out into the garden or on a longer jaunt to the beach. Its headline slot and aux-in are handy, while the sound quality is thoroughly decent. But Bluetooth isn't exactly an expensive technology and the sound quality isn't perfect enough for Tivoli to be charging the kind of money it's asking for the PAL+ BT. The design has, however, smartly improved over the past few years, shrinking the remote and ditching the oversized analogue knob for a more capable LCD screen. The Tivoli's PAL+ BT isn't the most cost-effective way of getting a DAB+ radio, but it is still one of the best out there. In the end, this is a compact, versatile DAB radio that can be taken around the home (and anywhere else) quite easily thanks to a 16-hour battery – while the PAL+BT's inclusion of Bluetooth and a bass-heavy sound goes some way to justifying its high price. Perfect for occasional forays into the bathroom. Read the full review: Tivoli Audio PAL+ BT review What makes the Pure Siesta Charge stand out is – you guessed it – its charging capabilities. If your smartphone or phablet is compatible with QI wireless charging, you’ll be able to leave it on top of the Siesta Charge as it fills up your battery. It has a lovely sound, with simple customization options and presets, while all the practical alarm, timer and radio functions of Pure's popular Siesta range position it as a hugely practical bedside gadget. Not to mention an auto-dimming LED display and dashing glass screen. Not everyone will make use of the wireless charging feature: but either way you're getting a sleek, well-designed DAB radio and speaker that's well worth a look. Read the full review: Pure Siesta Charge Review With DAB, DAB+, Bluetooth, touch-sensitive buttons, line-in and a hard carry case that both protects and props-up the stereo 2.1 speaker, the Model XS is excessively impressive. Music is refined, well balanced and gets to high volumes without a hint of distortion; for DAB fans who like taking radio around the world, or want a cute desktop option, this is the best compact all-in-one in the business. The price might be a tad high for some, but there's no doubting the top tech going on inside this product which is absolutely one of the best DAB radios we've tested. Microsoft finally puts Windows 10 Mobile to rest [updated] Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:23 AM PST Microsoft is finally saying goodbye to Windows 10 Mobile: the operating system will get no more support, including security updates and hotfixes. Update: Not so fast - Microsoft quietly gave Windows 10 Mobile users a temporary reprieve, extending support for a single month, per Windows Latest. The new end-of-service date is January 14, 2020. We knew this was coming, as Microsoft announced that support for its mobile OS would end way back in January 2019. Heck, we knew the Windows 10 Mobile was on death row in 2017 when a Windows VP tweeted that its October update would be the last one to introduce new features. But the end of any sort of updates signals the effective demise of the last Windows mobile operating system, as the company fully cedes the field to Apple and Google. While Microsoft Office apps for Windows 10 Mobile will still be supported until January 12, 2021, Microsoft recommends users transition over to an Android or iOS device anyway. Windows 10 Mobile sunset: a move we all saw comingIt makes sense to shutter Windows 10 Mobile, as it wasn’t popular even while it received support. The last ‘big’ phone with Windows 10 Mobile, the HP Elite x3, launched in September 2016. Microsoft had let its mobile OS lie fallow with no plans to resurrect it, and even its dual screen ‘not a phone’ Microsoft Duo will run a version of Android. With CEO Satya Nadella’s moving away from Windows, this is a logical move: compete in the device sphere without spending time and resources fighting in uncontestable software arenas. Via GSMArena

New Orleans city computers taken offline following major cyberattack Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:19 AM PST Following an apparent cyberattack, New Orleans city employees were told to shut down their computers over the weekend as a precaution. While the amount of damage caused by the attack is still unclear, city officials have revealed that there is no evidence that user passwords or data were stolen. According to the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, the NOLA.gov website remained down for “unplanned maintenance” on Sunday but emergency services such as 911 and the fire department were still operational. The FBI and Secret Service are also assisting with the investigation.
New Orleans cyberattackNew Orleans' emergency preparedness campaign NOLA Ready provided more details on the incident in a post on Twitter, which reads: "Out of an abundance of caution, all employees were immediately alerted to power down computers, unplug devices & disconnect from WiFi. All servers have been powered down as well." As of now, it is still unclear as to whether or not a ransomware attack was responsible for the city of New Orleans having to take its systems offline but will likely learn more once the investigation into the matter is complete. CEO and co-founder of Cyware Labs, Anuj Goel explained how sharing threat intelligence can help prevent attacks like this in the future, saying: “Ransomware attacks on local governments have witnessed a worrying upward trend this year with the attack on the City of New Orleans being the latest example. What were the security loopholes that lead to a large-scale attack? How did the threat actors manage to spread across the entire state network? What can the local government do to prevent such attacks in the future? These are all critical questions that need to be answered in the wake of such a cyberattack. Threat intelligence sharing can empower governments in completely thwarting or preventing the spread of such attacks by helping them predict and proactively block such attacks. In case one succeeds, they could contain it within no time by automating intel actioning with zero or negligible operational downtime.”

Best mobile hotspots for 4G LTE and 5G in 2020: portable wireless routers for traveling Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:11 AM PST Welcome to our pick of the best mobile hotspots for 4G and 5G mobile data connections in 2020. This year, we should hopefully see much wider coverage and support for 5G, which has the potential to offer network speeds that are comparable to broadband internet. The best mobile hotspots for 4G and 5G allow for several devices to connect to one or more data SIMs – usually 4G ones – to surf privately and safely. Much like a smartphone's SIM card, these data-only deals allow you access to the internet in complete security. That means no more having to connect to free or open Wi-Fi hotspots, which can put your security and privacy in danger. Best of all, you can use a monthly contract, or use a pay-as-you-go SIM, so you know exactly how much data you are paying for. Another good thing about the best mobile hotspots is that 4G data is impressively fast, so you'll be able to browse the internet as if you were connected to a broadband connection. It means it will also often be faster than free or shared Wi-Fi spots, which usually have data limits and a lot of traffic to deal with. Meanwhile 5G offers even greater speeds – so fast, in fact, that a good 5G mobile hotspot could even replace your broadband connection in the future. 5G is the latest generation of mobile internet, offering speeds that are far faster than 4G data connections. While 5G is in its infancy, there are not currently many 5G mobile hotspots, but as more become available they'll be included in this list – as long as they are good enough. Mobile hubs range from a simple one SIM solution with a battery to models that can accommodate 10 different SIM cards, or others that even sport a complete Android operating system. Below are the best mobile Wi-Fi routers you can buy in the UK, catering to all tastes, from frugal surfers to power users and everything in between.
The HTC 5G Hub is currently the best 5G mobile hotspot money can buy. Sure, there's not a huge amount of competition out there at the moment, as 5G is still relatively new, but HTC has come out of the gate with a winner. EE, the UK's biggest network provider, is offering data subscriptions with this hotspot. It's not cheap – you pay £100 upfront and then £50 a month for 50GB of data – but you are getting a very accomplished bit of kit. It can handle up to 20 wireless devices connected at once, which should be enough for most households, and an Ethernet port for wired devices as well. A powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor powers the device, and there's a 5-inch HD touchscreen that gives you all the information you need to keep an eye on your 5G network. It also have a large battery life that should keep you going while you're out and about. The Netgear Nighthawk M2 Mobile Router is Netgear's first mobile hotspot to support 5G. It's small and portable, yet it allows for up to 20 simultaneous connections, so it can be used in the busiest of homes and offices, and it can support up to 2Gbps downloads. So, it's seriously fast, then. Battery life is also good, making it an excellent choice for travelling with. The only downside is its lack of availability. There are 4G versions out there, which are still good, but getting the 5G one could prove difficult. At the moment it seems like only AT&T are offering the 5G version with the company's own branding. The TP-Link M7350 is an excellent mobile hotspot, supporting both micro and nano SIM cards, which means it's almost certainly going to be compatible with a SIM card you already own. It has a small display for informing you about your connection, and it supports dual band Wifi on both 2.4 and 5GHz. It can be accessed by up to 10 devices at once, and performance is very good on 4G LTE. Its battery life is also excellent, giving you around 10 hours of 4G connectivity. The EE 4GEE WiFi Mini is one of the better looking mobile hotspot devices on this list, and its compact design means it can be easily carried around with you. The 1500mAh offers up to 50 hours on standby, and up to six hours when connected to the internet. It can support up to 10 devices at once, but it doesn't have an LCD screen, like the TP-Link M7350, which means it's not quite as user friendly. You also need to use the EE network, which isn't too much of a hardship due to EE's coverage and fast 4G speeds, and the network offers a range of data plans to go alongside the EE 4GEE WiFi Mini. However, if you want something more future-proof, check out the HTC 5G Hub at the top of this list of best mobile hotspots, which is also offered by EE. Netgear's AC810 Aircard is an excellent mobile hotspot that lets you quickly and easily share a fast 4G LTE internet connection with a wide range of devices. Supporting up to 15 devices, this is a very flexible bit of kit, and its 2930 mAh battery is capable of 11 hours operating time and 260 hours when in standby. An attractive touchscreen gives you all the information you need, and allows you to manage connections and change settings on the fly. It's put together with a robust build quality we've come to expect from Netgear, and in our view this is one of the best Mi-Fi portable hotspots money can buy right now. The Mobile Wi-Fi Pro from Huawei, otherwise known as the E5770, ticks a lot of boxes for power users. This 4G/LTE model (Cat-4, so only 150Mbps) has one of the biggest batteries we’ve seen on any Mi-Fi device at 5,200mAh. It can even charge another device thanks to a bundled cable that doubles as a stylish strap. Up to 10 devices can be connected with a quoted working time of up to 20 hours. If that wasn’t good enough, it’s also the only hotspot that we’re aware of that comes with a microSD card slot (sadly taking FAT-formatted cards only) and an Ethernet port. That makes it perfect for small businesses and even, dare we say, a perfect cord-cutting device if paired with the right SIM card. This is the antithesis of your traditional pocket-sized hotspot and we’re bending the rules to include it in this article. Behold the Netgear Nighthawk R7100LG, a router with a SIM card slot. Technically, it is not portable as the device requires a mains power supply, but there are potential workarounds if you really want to make this happen. The Nighthawk is a great solution should you want to offer internet access to a massive amount of users, and indeed storage access as well. It offers Cat 6/LTE (300Mbps), AC1900 Wi-Fi, two USB ports, a free app to manage the router (Genie), four Gigabit Ethernet ports plus open source support and a wealth of security features.

Has Half-Life: Alyx brought VR back from the dead? Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:08 AM PST Virtual reality hardware sales have spiked impressively this year, driven by Oculus Quest, and also Valve’s Index VR headset – plus the revelation of Half-Life: Alyx in turn, which has led to the Index selling out as we’ve seen previously (and don’t forget, Oculus Quest will support the game too). According to statistics provided by Nielsen’s SuperData XR Dimensions report, VR hardware sales are predicted to reach $2.1 billion (around £1.6 billion, AU$3 billion) by the close of 2019, which is up 31% compared to $1.6 billion (around £1.2 billion, AU$2.3 billion) last year.
As mentioned, a big part of this has been the Oculus Quest, which has made its mark as a convenient all-in-one solution with a display and performance that rivals the Oculus Rift. Evidently it’s been popular with consumers, managing to attain ‘widespread’ adoption according to SuperData – at least in VR terms – and it probably doesn’t hurt that the Quest lets you play Rift games via the Oculus Link (hooking it up to your PC – and meaning you’ll be able to enjoy Alyx with it). And as we’ve seen previously, Valve’s Index VR headset completely sold out in the US the week after the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, the next instalment of the big franchise which you’ll only be able to enjoy via a VR headset. As Wccftech (which spotted the Nielsen report) points out, if you try to order the Index from Valve in the US now, there’s a statement noting that due to ‘recent high demand’ you won’t get your headset until February 2020. Now, Half-Life: Alyx is set to be released in March 2020, so that means if Valve has many more orders in the near future, there’s a prospect of folks who want to buy the Index not being able to get one in time before Alyx hits the shelves. Safe side?So you have been warned: if you want to play Alyx with Valve’s Index, it might be on the safe side to order your VR headset without delay (because given this news, there may be another rush of orders as we saw after the announcement of Valve’s next instalment of Half-Life). The scarcity of Valve’s Index is such that it has led to the predictable situation where third-party sellers are trying to flog hardware with massively jacked up prices. For example if you look on Amazon.com at the time of writing, the retail giant is sold out of its own stock (naturally), but sellers on Amazon’s Marketplace are attempting to get $1,990 (around £1,490, AU$2,890) for the headset (which is twice the standard asking price for the full Index kit). It’s a similar story in the UK, where on Steam, the Valve Index is completely sold out (and that’s every bundle, and indeed the standalone controllers) – except in this region, there’s not even any option to pre-order right now. It would seem, then, that a combination of popular Oculus hardware and the revelation of Half-Life: Alyx – which is playable on a number of VR headsets including the Oculus Quest – has really helped lift the sales of VR kit throughout 2019. And potentially it points the way to a seriously bumper 2020 for the world of virtual reality – perhaps even a breakout year, because as we’ve already argued, Half-Life: Alyx is indeed likely to make or break VR gaming next year.
