Rack-mounted Mac Pros are now on sale - but it'll cost you Posted: 16 Jan 2020 01:42 PM PST After releasing its new Mac Pro last month, Apple has updated its store page to include a new version of the powerful PC which is rack-mountable. The rack-mountable Mac Pro has the same internals as the standard Mac Pro with configurations starting with an 8-core Intel Xeon W CPU clocked at 3.5GHz with 32 GB of RAM, a 256 GB PCIe SSD and a Radeon Pro 580X GPU. The new version of Apple's desktop computer can also be outfitted with up to a 2.5 GHz 28-core Xeon W CPU, 1.5 TB of DDR4 ECC RAM, 8 TB of SSD storage and dual Radeon Pro Vega II DUO GPUs.
Rack-mounted Mac ProThe main difference between the two Mac Pro models is design as the rack-mountable Mac Pro doesn't have any legs or the option to add wheels. Instead, it has stainless steel rails that can allow it to be slid into a server rack. While iFixit gave the desktop model of the Mac Pro a 9/10 in terms of repairability, the rack-mounted model allows users to remove the top panel as opposed to the side panel on the standard model, to access the device's internals. Price is another difference between the two models as users will have to pay an additional $500 for the rack mount form factor regardless of which internal parts they choose. As a result, the rack-mounted Mac Pro starts at $6,499 and can be outfitted with better parts to all the way up to $51,899. Interested users can purchase a rack-mountable Mac Pro today and according to Apple, the devices will begin shipping between January 23 and February 13.

Fleeceware apps installed by over 600m Play Store users Posted: 16 Jan 2020 11:19 AM PST A new set of “fleeceware” apps have been discovered that appear to have been downloaded and installed by over 600m Android users according to security researchers at Sophos. The cybersecurity firm first coined the term fleeceware last September after it discovered a new type of financial fraud taking place on the Google Play Store. The term itself refers to apps that abuse the ability to offer trial periods to users before their accounts are charged. When a user signs up for an Android app trial period, they have to manually cancel the trial to avoid being charged. Most users just uninstall apps they don't like and the majority of app developers take this as a sign that they wish to cancel the trial period without being charged.
However, last year Sophos discovered that some app developers didn't cancel an Android app's trial period after it was uninstalled and instead kept charging them despite the fact that they were no longer using the app. Fleeceware appsAccording to Sophos, the firm said that it initially discovered 24 Android apps that were charging high fees, between $100 and $240 per year, for simple apps such as QR readers and calculators after their trial periods ended. In a recent report though, Sophos revealed that it had discovered another set of Android fleeceware apps that were installed by over 600m Android users. The company's Jagadesh Chandraiah explained how these fleeceware apps were able to become so popular on the Play Store in a blog post, saying: “Some of these apps are very unprofessional looking. Based on past experience, it may have been the case that these app developers could have used a paid service to bloat their install counts and forge a large number of four- and five-star reviews. You can identify some of these falsified user review clusters if you scrutinize the recent 5 star reviews; one-to-three word, five star reviews have a propensity to be “sockpuppet” reviews.” Fleeceware apps remain a problem that Google will have to deal with on the Play Store but to prevent falling victim to their scams, it is recommended that users think twice about signing up for a trial period, remember to cancel any trial periods they do sign up for and check their Play Store payment history for any suspicious charges.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed until September Posted: 16 Jan 2020 10:08 AM PST CD Projekt Red's sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed, moving from its original April release date to September 17, 2020. CD Projekt Red says the game is finished, but polishing and playtesting is required to get the final product in the best shape it can be. The developer/publisher shared the news on Twitter, noting "We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect." The statement then says to expect frequent updates as the new September date nears. This is the third major game delay of the week, following the delays of Marvel's Avengers and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
A little longerThe rationale for delaying all these games is exactly the same: it's about polishing the game so it's as good as possible. That's why it's only ever worth being slightly disappointed when big blockbusters are delayed for this reason. Cyberpunk 2077 was always a possible candidate for another delay. Every public showing of this game demonstrates enormous ambition, with multiple paths through levels and a lot of locations to explore. Considering it's been five years since the release of CD Projekt's last game, The Witcher 3, and players are still obsessed with it, why wouldn't they want this title to leave a similar mark? Crowning achievement for "this generation" is an interesting choice of words, since Cyberpunk will now likely release just a couple of months ahead of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. CD Projekt Red previously explained that the game won't be on next-gen consoles at launch.

Google will begin phasing out support for Chrome Apps Posted: 16 Jan 2020 09:58 AM PST After announcing that it will kill off Chrome Apps back in 2016, Google has now laid out a final timeline for their impending demise. Chrome Apps first launched in 2013 and were built using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript in an effort to provide an “experience comparable to a native application”. These apps worked on Google's own desktop operating system Chrome OS but they also worked on Windows, Mac and Linux. A lot has changed since then and in a blog post, the company explained that the web is now able to handle most of the use cases of Chrome Apps, saying:
“The progress of modern browsers puts the Web in a good position to answer the vast majority of use cases - evident in the success of companies like Figma and our own products like Google Earth. We are confident that the Web can deliver first class experiences on an open platform.” Final timelineThe first date on Google's timeline is March 2020 and that is when the Chrome Web Store will stop accepting submissions for new Chrome Apps. However, developers will still be able to update their existing Chrome Apps through June 2020. In June 2020, support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac and Linux will come to an end though customers who have Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education upgrades will have access to a policy to extend support through December 2020. A year later in June 2021, Google will end support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS but once against Chrome Enterprise and Chrome Education users will be able to extend support through June 2022. Finally in June 2022, support for Chrome Apps on Chrome OS will come to an end for all customers. While Google may be killing off Chrome Apps, the search giant concluded its blog post by pointing out the fact that support for Chrome Extensions won't be impacted by the change, saying: “This change does not impact support for Chrome Extensions. Google will continue to support and invest in Chrome Extensions on all existing platforms. Fostering a robust ecosystem of extensions is critical to Chrome's mission and we are committed to providing a useful extension platform for customizing the browsing experience for all users.”

Best Bluetooth speakers 2020: the best portable speakers for any budget Posted: 16 Jan 2020 09:25 AM PST A great Bluetooth speaker is a must-have piece of kit if you don't already have one in your audio-visual arsenal. They're the best way to take your tunes with you to picnics, beaches and outdoor adventures, and some of the best portable speakers sound just as good as almost any wired speaker that you'd buy. In 2020, the best Bluetooth speakers even come with voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant built-in, doubling as smart speakers that can be used to control your smart home gadgets. These hard-working models are ideal for those of us can't afford a new speaker for each occasion; and the best portable speakers need to serenade us from the bedroom, to the beach, and everywhere in-between. That's why we've put together this buying guide, which will help you find the right Bluetooth speaker for your needs (and your budget). The best Bluetooth speakers you can buyHere’s the thing about the Sonos Move – it’s so good, you might want to consider it not only as your on-the-go party station, but also as your main in-the-home speaker too. With two quality drivers, a solid app that unlocks playback from hundreds of wireless sources, multi-room capabilities and smart audio-tuning tech which tweaks the output based on the speaker's immediate surroundings, the Sonos Move is engineered well beyond your average Bluetooth speaker. It's a versatile speaker, one that stands solidly alongside the built-for-home Sonos speakers that the company made its name on. It’s not perfect – it’s heavy as a byproduct of its incredible sound, it’s expensive due to its rich feature set, and it sadly can’t be used as rear channels for a home cinema set-up. But if you’ve got the money, it’s hard to fault the Sonos Move when it comes to hunting down the very best Bluetooth speaker in the world. Read the full review: Sonos Move review While we weren't as impressed with the UE Boom 3 as we were with its predecessor the UE Boom 2, this is still one of the best Bluetooth speakers money can buy in 2019. This is a speaker that can get loud and not distort at higher volumes; be light enough to carry on a camping trip but remain durable enough to tumble in a bag unprotected. It's both water and dust-proof, and now has a one-touch mix button that lets you pull up your favorite playlists without ever picking up your phone. There are certainly more detailed speakers out there, but at a price that's relatively affordable to all, the UE Boom 3 hits all the right notes for the third year in a row. Ultimate Ears now lets you customize your UE Boom 3, so you have even more options when it comes to color and pattern combinations. Read the full review: UE Boom 3 review For the money, the JBL Charge 4 is a definite no-brainer. For just $150 / £160 / AU$200, you get a speaker that lasts all day, sounds great, can put up with all kinds of abuse, and tops your phone up in a pinch. Yes, there are better sounding speakers but you’ll have to spend much more money. While the JBL Charge 4 only offers minor updates to the previous generation, it remains an excellent value in wireless speakers – and is one of the best waterproof speakers around. Read the full review: JBL Charge 4 review If 2019 was the year of the smart speaker, then 2020 is set to be the year of the portable smart speaker – and with the Bose Portable Home Speaker, along with competing models like the Sonos Move offering the smarts of Google Assistant and Alexa alongside Bluetooth connectivity, the market is already growing fast. The Bose Portable Home Speaker isn’t the brand’s first outdoor-friendly speaker, and it shows: gorgeous minimalist design meets weather-ready robustness, with a light build and handle that lends itself to listening on the go. It doesn’t quite meet the sonic dexterity of the Sonos Move, or the value for money of the UE Boom 3 and JBL Charge 4 – but if you love that Bose sound and build quality, this is the speaker for you. Read the full review: Bose Portable Home Speaker review Anker has a history of making excellent budget wireless speakers. While we weren’t entirely impressed with the Anker SoundCore 2’s sound, we couldn’t be too mad since the speaker was so affordable. So what happens if you can stretch your budget? For around $20 more you get the Anker Soundcore Flare, an excellent waterproof Bluetooth speaker that can stand toe-to-toe with the competition. The Soundcore Flare is an amazing value in the sub-$100 wireless speaker segment. Competitors like the UE Wonderboom (listed above) give the Flare a run for its money in terms of build quality but we give the Flare the slight edge with sound quality. We recommend the Flare for anyone looking for a wireless speaker that can do it all without breaking the bank. Read the full review: Anker Soundcore Flare review The original UE Wonderboom has been at the top of our best waterproof speaker list since its debut and for good reason: it’s rugged, plays louder than its diminutive sound suggests, and could be paired to other UE Wonderboom speakers to amplify sound. And although the UE Wonderboom 2 looks nearly identical to the original, Ultimate Ears packed in a slew of upgrades that make the Wonderboom 2 even better, like the increased battery life (up 30% compared to the original), better bass response, and the new Outdoor Boost feature that helps the speaker get even louder than before. The UE Wonderboom 2 is a fantastic rugged and waterproof speaker you’ll actually want to take with. Its small size doesn’t mean small sound, however, as the speaker gets extremely loud and sounds great. While it can’t match the bass response of larger speakers like the UE Boom 3 or the Bose SoundLink Revolve, the improved bass adds warmth and intensity to music that the original was lacking. All said, for $100 (£90 AU$129), the UE Wonderboom 2 is still one of the best waterproof speakers you can buy - and our recommended option for those looking to bring their speaker to the beach or pool. Read the full review: UE Wonderboom 2 review The Tribit XSound Go shouldn’t sound this good for the price, but it does. The speaker impressed with balanced sound, is near distortion-free at high volumes, and lasts and incredible 20+ hours of playtime at medium volume. Plus, the speaker is IPX7 water and dust resistant so it’ll put up with a day at the beach or pool without a problem. While its design may be forgettable, you won’t care once you hear how good the XSound Go sounds. In terms of competition, you’ll have to spend a lot more for better sound quality. The UE Wonderboom is an excellent outdoor speaker, but will cost twice the money and doesn’t last as long as the Tribit. Read the full review: Tribit XSound Go review The Bose SoundLink Mini II is relatively ancient, having been released in June 2015. However, writing off the SoundLink Mini II because of its age would be a mistake, as it remains one of the best sounding wireless speakers. That said, it punches way above what its size would suggest, producing deep bass, sparkling highs and a lush midrange. While most wireless speakers sound OK, the Mini II proves that small speakers don’t need to compromise on sound, and other Bose conveniences like a charging pad. Read the full review: Bose SoundLink Mini II review The SRS-XB501G is a big speaker that offers a light show, tripod mount, big sound, and Google Assistant. This is a speaker that you can truly use on the go and in the home after a day of partying. On the go, the speaker is brilliant, playing loudly and for up to 16 hours. But at home, it’s dated design and average voice detection are compromises compared to dedicated home speakers. Competitors like the LG PK7 sounds slightly better and has a light show that actually reacts to your music, however it doesn’t have the Google Assistant built in. If you’re looking for an actual portable speaker that you can fit in a bag that also supports Google Assistant, the JBL Link 20 is a good choice. Just don’t expect it to pump out as much bass or offer as wide of a soundstage. To that end, the XB501G is a good all-around compromise that fills multiple purposes. It's not the best wireless speaker, nor the best smart speaker, but it's a solid entry in both categories and one of a select few to exist in both camps. Read the full review: Sony SRS-XB501G review The Bose SoundLink Revolve is an excellent sound speaker for folks looking for true 360-degree sound. It’s great for sharing music during a party or for moving around the room without losing audio fidelity. However, the Bose SoundLink Mini II sounds slightly better and is slightly cheaper to boot. On the debit side, it’s also not fully dust or waterproof so you’ll want to think twice before bringing the Revolve to the beach. For half the price, the Wonderboom is a great speaker that is completely dust and waterproof and while it can’t match the audio fidelity or features of the Bose, it's still great for on-the-go listening. If bass is your game, the JBL Charge 4 is an excellent fully waterproof speaker that sounds great, but is big and heavy along with it. Read the full review: Bose SoundLink Revolve review The most recent speaker in the Denon Envaya line was one of the first speakers to absolutely blow us away in 2018 – and it's still a great purchase two years on. It offers powerful, room-filling sound that will sound great to most ears, plus comes with an IP67 rating, make it both dust and waterproof. It's also built like a tank, making it one of the most durable speakers we've ever laid our hands on. Despite a nearly flawless performance, the Envaya isn't perfect: While sound quaity is full, powerful and rich, it doesn’t have the treble bite some like and the buttons located along the side can feel stiff and difficult to operate. These are ultimately minor complaints, however, and the Denon Envaya remains a great Bluetooth speaker – easily among the best you can buy this year. Read the full review: Denon Envaya (DSB-250BT) review The Urbanista Brisbane might not look exciting, but beneath its unassuming package lies a powerful Bluetooth speaker. Loud and rich-sounding, it's a well-priced addition to anyone's home, with a good battery life and the option to pair it with another Brisbane for true stereo sound. For the price, the Urbanista Brisbane is ultimately a bit of a bargain. You'll find better sound quality out there, but it'll cost you a lot more. All in all, this mid-range speaker could be a great choice for anyone who wants the freedom of wireless listening without sacrificing volume levels. Read the full review: Urbanista Brisbane review Best Bluetooth speakers at a glance
How to pick out the best Bluetooth speakerThere are so many new speakers on the market these days with great designs and the latest tech built-in that it can be tricky to figure out which one you need. Although it may seem like the choice is endless, there are plenty with unique selling points that'll suit you. First up, some speakers are built with ultimate durability in mind, others are weather and waterproof for camping and tunes by the pool; however, some aren't fit for the outdoors and would look pretty inside your home instead. If you're having trouble figuring out which speaker might be best for you, start by picturing where you're going to use it and find a speaker that matches that setting. That means if you're a beach person, water and dust-proofing in your outdoor speaker are key. Or, if you're a party person, you might want the ability to connect two speakers together or a speaker with multi-point pairing that allows multiple devices to connect at a time. Battery life, sound quality, and design are paramount for all speakers, and we've done our best to take these in the utmost consideration when creating our list. Best monitor 2020: the top 10 monitors and displays we’ve reviewed Posted: 16 Jan 2020 09:06 AM PST Invest in one of the best monitors 2020 has to offer, and it will change your computing experience forever and for the better. After all, a monitor is like a window to your computer’s soul, and it can make or break your computing experience. This means that the better the monitor you’re using, the more immersive that experience will be – whether you’re just streaming videos or doing demanding creative tasks like video editing. It also means that the better monitor you have, the less strain there will be on your eyes, which lessens eye fatigue, which in turn allows you to use it for longer periods. If you’re spending hours and hours staring on your display, this detail is especially important. Whatever kind of monitor you’re looking for – whether it’s one with insanely fast refresh rates that’s perfect for gaming, one with a massive screen (an ultrawide monitor, perhaps) for real estate or a USB-C monitor to serve as the secondary screen for your Ultrabook – you’ll find it on this list. We’ve put together a list of our picks for the best monitors, all tested and reviewed by us. Whether you’re a gamer, a video editor, or a casual user simply looking for a better display, you’ll find the best monitor for you below. Best monitors 2020 at a glance:
Now that the best PCs can handle 4K easier than ever before, the best 4K monitors are all over the place. That’s why BenQ released the PD3200U, a massive 32-inch Ultra HD display, as part of its Designer Monitor range. 3D designers particularly love this display, thanks to the factory-calibrated color accuracy and CAD/CAM mode. Marketed to creatives and professionals, BenQ has designed, seemingly by mistake, a panel that gamers will enjoy as well, making it one of the best monitors all-around – so long as they can find the space for it on their desks. Read the full review: BenQ PD3200U Though the AOC Agon AG352UCG6 Black Edition is a gaming monitor through and through, it’s one of the best monitors if you’re wanting an ultra-wide display. With its exceptional color support, strong contrast ratio incredibly speedy 120Hz refresh rate, everything you do on your PC will look better and feel faster. It’s on the more expensive side, but this ultra-wide monitor can significantly boost productivity, making it totally worth the hefty price. As long as you have the hardware to drive it, it’s one of the best monitors money can buy. Read the full review: AOC Agon AG352UCG6 Black Edition If you’ve been searching for one of the best monitors, and you’re ready to just give up and buy the most expensive monitor you can find, you’re in luck. The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ combines so many high-end features that it almost seems like too much. It doesn’t just feature a 4K UHD display at 144Hz, but it also rocks Nvidia G-Sync and HDR. This is simply the best monitor on the market, but it will also cost an arm and a leg. If you’re playing games, doing photo and video editing work, or even just general desktop work, you can’t go wrong with this monitor, as long as you have the cash to shell out. Read the full review: Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ When you’re growing tired of the same old 16:9 aspect ratio, nothing hits the spot like a cinematic 21:9 display. It’s not the best for watching Netflix or YouTube, but the Acer Predator X34 is a fantastic example of what an ultra-wide monitor can do. Boasting an eye-catching aluminum bezel and polygonal stand that looks like a bird’s foot, this massive 34-inch monitor is a marvel to behold. More significantly, armed with Nvidia’s G-Sync tech, you won’t require V-Sync stressing out your graphics card. The Acer Predator X34 does all the heavy lifting for you. This is about as immersive as a gaming monitor can get, and one of the best monitors to buy this 2020. Read the full review: Acer Predator X34 Ultrawide monitors have been around for a while: they’ve constantly made it on folks’ the best monitors list for a few years now, in fact. These wide monitors are lifesavers when it comes to productivity, and they’re only increasing in popularity. The Asus Designo Curve MX38VC, however, takes it to the next level. Not only does this monitor have a massive 3,840 x 1,600 resolution, but with USB-C compatibility and a Qi wireless charger built into the base, it’s going to be a workplace companion you won’t want to live without. It’s a tad pricey, and doesn’t feature HDR, but that’s a worthy sacrifice, especially for professionals. Read the full review: Asus Designo Curve MX38VC We don’t usually run into technology that’s so far ahead of the curve that we’re left dumbfounded, which is why the Dell UltraSharp UP3218K has impressed us even more. Finding one of the best monitors that can reach the raw gorgeousness this one can should be next to impossible. It’s not just the resolution, either. Dell went so far as to ensure that the build quality and color reproduction are the best in the business as well. The Dell UltraSharp UP3218K is aimed at professionals, obviously, so if that sounds like it’s made for you, it’s probably the best monitor you’ll ever find. Read the full review: Dell UltraSharp UP3218K
If you’re looking for a first-rate 1440p monitor with HDR for multimedia and gaming, then the BenQ EX3203R might be the display for you. One of the best monitors this 2020, this one’s noteworthy as it offers a ton of high-end features in a product that is very reasonably priced. Sure, 32 inches might sound like a bit much for a monitor, but the 1800R curvature on this BenQ panel means that it’s easy to use, both for productivity, as well as for immersion in your games and media. Read the full review: BenQ EX203R
If you’re on a tight budget, then this might break the bank – like any Alienware product would. Still, Dell’s 25-inch gaming monitor will all but eliminate screen tearing, and whether you’re using an AMD Radeon VII or an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080, there’s a configuration for you. With G-Sync or FreeSync taking some of the heavy lifting off the GPU that would otherwise be spent on VSync, the Alienware 25’s 120Hz refresh rate might actually be reasonable. The 1ms response time? Well, that’s just the cherry on top. Read the full review: Alienware 25 It might seem farfetched, but the BenQ Zowie XL2540 is every bit the gaming monitor that the Asus Predator X34 is. While it may not appear like it from the outside looking in, it does its job incredibly well too, giving up dazzling lighting effects for a ridiculous 240Hz refresh rate and almost-instantaneous 1ms response time. There’s no G-Sync or FreeSync, as this monitor assumes you already have a rig that’s more than capable of eliminating screen tears without any help. Instead, this monitor keeps it simple by providing you with lots of visual presets, an “S Switch” control pod for managing those presets and a pair of adjustable light screens. Read the full review: BenQ Zowie XL2540 If you’re searching for a gaming monitor with a super-wide 1440p resolution, incredibly fast response time of 1ms, a viewing angle of 178 degrees and a quick refresh rate, then the MSI Optix MPG341CQR is something you should consider. If not for those, then perhaps for the fact that MSI has decided to go with a VA panel, as opposed to IPS, giving it more contrast and punchier colors. A few bonuses are included, as well: snazzy “Mystic Light” RGD LEDs, USB-C connectivity, an integrated camera and a competitive price. For years, HP’s Spectre line of Ultrabooks and 2-in-1 laptops has been about pairing elegance with performance. The 2019 HP Spectre x360 15 is no different. It deserves a top spot on our best 2 in 1 laptops list for packing an 8th-generation Intel Core i7 CPU, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics and 8GB of RAM in its base configuration. This 2-in-1 can tackle just about anything your everyday workload throws at it – and then some (such as a bit of light gaming, for example) – while looking like royalty. Keep in mind that the Spectre x360 is somewhat big and heavy for a 2-in-1, so you likely won’t be using it in tablet mode very often. Put it in tent mode instead, so you can catch some movies on its stunning 4K display. Read the full review: HP Spectre x360 15T (2019) It might seem strange that a Chromebook is on a list of the best 2 in 1 laptops, and rated so highly at that. So, while it comes with a price tag that’s a bit on the high end, it’s also completely worth breaking open the piggy bank. Read the full review: Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 We had nothing but love for the first Surface Book so when we heard that there was going to be a 15-inch Surface Book 2, we could barely contain our excitement. In the end though, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 didn’t end up being the best 2-in-1 laptop out there. However, it’s still a notable machine, even if it’s held back by a few compromises that were necessary to begin with. This 2-in-1 laptop features cutting-edge 8th-generation processors as well as Nvidia 10-series graphics for gamers and creatives alike. Combine that with its unique convertible solution, and the Surface Book 2 is an ace in our book. Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Book 2 (13-inch) Sleek, thin and with solid specs to boot, the new Lenovo Yoga C930 is definitely worthy of a spot in the best 2 in 1 laptops list. And, that’s without stating the fact that it now offers a 4K display model, so that high-end viewing experience and decent gaming might be had once users have gotten their day-to-day workload out of the way. This 2-in-1 is a strong contender for consumers light on cash, but if you do decide to go for gold, be ready to break the bank. Read the full review: Lenovo Yoga C930 It’s no secret that we’re fans of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 13-inch, seeing as how we just raved about it earlier in this list. But how about its 15-inch brother? Well, with its long battery life, high-end specs that will power through the demands of a day-to-day workload as well as a lot of entertainment, and of course, its unique design features, we’re apt to feel the same way. This model isn’t for the economical shoppers, however. Still, if you do have the money, its base model with 256GB storage is well worth the cost and is among the best 2 in 1 laptops money can buy. To make things a bit more complicated, there are also a few things you should consider when you’re buying a gaming monitor. Is speed of utmost importance– particularly high refresh rates and low response times – so when coupled with the best graphics cards and processors, your monitor will make you the fastest gamer on the block? Are you looking for something affordable, or are you willing to spend a pretty penny for the best of the best? Lucky for you, we put together a list of the best gaming monitors of 2020. Whatever it is you’re looking for, you’ll find the most ideal one for you on it. And, each monitor on this list has been tested and reviewed by us, so you know that they’ve already got our seal of approval. Best gaming monitors at a glance
It may be very expensive and requires a killer gaming PC setup to run, but the Samsung CRG9 is completely worth it and the best gaming monitor if you’ve got the extra cash laying around. This bigger-than-average 49-incher boasts bezels thinner than most gaming monitors and a picture by picture mode feature that lets you use two different inputs, simulating a dual monitor setup in a single monitor. And, that’s without mentioning that the Samsung CRG9 produces an out-of-this-world image right out of the box. Read the full review: Samsung CRG9 The Alienware AW3418DW is one of the few gaming monitors that deliver a level of immersion that only a 21:9 aspect ratio can, while also offering up a high refresh rate. With a dense 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, ridiculously fast 4ms response times and a speedy 120Hz refresh rate, this ultrawide monitor gives you the best of both worlds. All these features don’t come cheap though, so budget-minded gamers might want to look elsewhere or start saving up. Still, it’s not hard to see why it’s one of the best gaming monitors 2019 has to offer. Read the full review: Alienware AW3418DW The AOC Agon AG352UCG was one of the best gaming monitors we ever got our hands on, so when we heard that a follow-up was coming – one that comes with a higher refresh rate and better contrast – it was hard not to get excited. The AOC Agon AC352UCG6 Black Edition carries over the original’s best features but ramps them up to 11, making it a stunning display on which to experience ultra-wide gaming. It’s expensive, yeah, but if you have the hardware to back it up, you’ll be doing yourself a disservice by not investing. Read the full review: AOC Agon AG352UCG6 Black Edition The Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ might just be the most advanced – not to mention, best – gaming monitor to add to your arsenal... as long as you’re ready to pay for it. This display features a gorgeous 4K Ultra-HD resolution and HDR, as well as G-Sync and a lightning-quick 144Hz refresh rate. These specs add up to one of the most impressive gaming monitors that’s ever existed – and when you see it in action, it will blow you away. The only thing that holds this gaming monitor back from true greatness is its ridiculous price tag. But, then again, if you have this kind of cash lying around, you should be able to afford a PC powerful enough to drive it. Read the full review: Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ While originally made for CAD professionals, the BenQ PD3200U is also great for gaming, making it one of the best gaming monitors you can buy today. This is mostly thanks to its rock-solid focus on graphic design so it’s able to offer incredibly wide viewing angles, which means that your friends can watch your game in comfort. And, unlike most 4K monitors on the market, you won’t have to mess around with the settings to get the best picture, since every unit is individually calibrated by BenQ before shipping. This is definitely one of the best gaming monitors out there, even though it wasn’t actually designed for gaming. Read the full review: BenQ PD3200U While all of its extra frills make the MSI Optix MPG341CQR an even more appealing selection for potential buyers, it does an outstanding job of standing out on its own. The use of VA rather than IPS panel technology, for one, is a welcome advantage, offering punchier colors and better contrast. Plus, its super-wide 1440p resolution and 144Hz refresh certainly give gamers an edge. The best part might be that this display is also reasonably priced, making it one of the best gaming monitors to consider in 2019. Read the full review: MSI Optix MPG341CQR Don’t be turned off by its limitations. The BenQ Zowie XL2540 still absolutely deserves its place right up there on the best gaming monitors list. It forgoes flashy lighting effects for a blazing 240Hz refresh rate and rapid 1ms response time. This monitor is both FreeSync and G-Sync compatible, and if you have a setup that’s able of keeping up with this refresh rate, then this gaming display will blow you away. The BenQ Zowie XL2540 keeps things simple by supplying you with a ton of visual presets, an “S Switch” control pod for managing those presets and even a pair of adjustable light screens. This is one of the best gaming monitors to consider if you’re a pro or hardcore gamer. Read the full review: BenQ Zowie XL2540 A bit of HDR is always a welcome addition, even if it’s not true HDR. And yet, the AOC Agon AG322QC4 has more aces up its sleeves. That includes a 144Hz refresh rate, FreeSync 2 and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, ranking this among the best gaming monitors of 2019. And it offers users beautiful, super smooth visuals, all while looking good doing so. It’s not exactly a steal, but the Agon AG322QC4 is still reasonably priced for gamers who aren’t shopping in the bargain basement. Read the full review: AOC Agon AG322QC4 When you’re playing competitive first-person shooters like Overwatch or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, you’ll need speed above all else in order to stay on top of the leader boards. That’s where displays like the MSI Optix MAG271CR come in handy. With a 1080p resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms of latency, you’re equipped with incredibly fast, super smooth gameplay, as long as you have the hardware to drive it. After all, 60Hz panels are so 2014 – the best gaming monitors in 2020 are all about the high refresh rates. Read the full review: MSI Optix MAG271CR How to buy the best gaming monitor in 2020If in the market for the best gaming monitor 2020 has to offer, know that there are a few things to keep in mind before choosing which display should grace your desk. You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the following terms and specifications to help guarantee that you’re getting the best gaming monitor that’s most ideal for you. It also means you won’t have to pay extra for additional features that you might not actually care about. Screen size: When looking for the best gaming monitor, one of the most important things to consider is the screen size. Larger display sizes can lead to more immersive gaming experiences as the game fills more of your field of vision, but you'll also have to make sure that you have the space to keep a large monitor. And, it goes without saying that the larger the monitor, the higher the price as well. Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio of a gaming monitor helps determine the width and height of the display. Most widescreen monitors have an aspect ratio of 16:9, while older monitors have closer to a square format of 4:3 that might feel pretty out of date in 2020. Ultra-wide monitors with aspect ratios of 21:9 are rapidly growing in popularity, as they offer a wider view of your games, which is why many ultra-wides have made our list of the best gaming monitors 2020. Resolution: One other critical factor to consider when searching for the best gaming monitor for your needs is the resolution. The higher the number, the sharper the picture. You will, however, require a more powerful graphics card for anything over Full HD (1,920 x 1,080), even if many gaming monitors feature resolutions as high as 2,560 x 1,400 (WQHD) and 3,840 x 2,160 (4K). Refresh rate: When you’re mostly looking to play Counter-Strike and other first-person shooters like it, refresh rate is even more vital. The higher the refresh rate, the more frames per second (fps) the monitor can support, leading to a considerably smoother gaming experience. A 60Hz refresh rate is still the most common in 2020, but refresh rates of 144Hz and even 200Hz are becoming more prominent – not to mention, more and more necessary. Response time: The best gaming monitors offers low response times, which means you’re getting fast and fluid actions, with little to no input lag. The lowest response time for TN monitors (we’ll get to this in the next section) is 1 millisecond, whereas the newer IPS monitors typically have slower 4ms response times. When you’re playing games competitively, it’s vital to keep this number as low as you can in order to avoid latency. Panel type: This is where things get a little technical. The type of panel a gaming monitor uses will largely contribute to its response time and image clarity. TN (twisted nematic) panels, which are often more affordable, have the lowest response times but usually don’t come with great viewing angles. IPS (in-plane switching) panels, on the other hand, have fantastic viewing angles and color reproduction, but usually have higher response times. Meanwhile, VA (vertical alignment) panels are between the two, although its slow response times makes these panels rare in the gaming world. Viewing Angle: While most people play games right in front of their gaming monitor, this isn’t always be the case, particularly when there is an audience. A monitor’s viewing angles tell you what angle you can look at the monitor from and still make out a clear image. The closer these numbers are to 180, the better your viewing experience will be when standing further to either side of the monitor or looking at it from above or below. G-Sync and FreeSync: You've probably noticed that many of the best gaming monitors in 2020 come with either G-Sync or FreeSync technology – sometimes even both. These help keep frames per second (fps) smooth, combat screen tearing and minimize input lag. G-Sync is developed by Nvidia, so it requires an Nvidia GPU. And, the tech is built into the monitor, which can bump up their price tag. FreeSync, on the other hand, was made by AMD. Since it is free to use by manufacturers, the monitors that have them are usually more economical. Check out our HDR Explained video below. Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 price could be much, much cheaper than we expected Posted: 16 Jan 2020 08:58 AM PST The original Samsung Galaxy Fold cost $1,980 / £1,900 / AU$2,999, which made it a startlingly pricey handset even if it was the first widely available foldable phone. If you wanted a phone with a bendable display but were put off by the price, you might be in luck, because a new rumor suggests the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 could cost less than half what its predecessor did. This comes from South Korean news site iNews24, which suggests the Galaxy Fold 2 will be available from between 1 million South Korean won (roughly $860, £660, AU$1,250) and 1.5 million won (around $1,290, £990, AU$1,875). If the price is closer to the lower, regardless of what currency you’re buying it in, it’ll be available for less than half the cost of the original device.
If true, this would be great news for people who were hoping for a more affordable phone, though that could be thanks to reduced specs (the original Galaxy Fold had a slightly-unnecessary six cameras) or perhaps thanks to a smaller form factor. We’re expecting the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 (or Galaxy Bloom, or Galaxy Z Flip, as we’ve heard it alternately named) to be a ‘clamshell’ device like an old flip phone, and if the Motorola Razr is any precedent, this form factor denotes a more affordable price point. It’s not actually clear where iNews24 got its figures from, as the article states the device’s ‘shipping price is reportedly being discussed with mobile operators' [roughly translated], implying but not explicitly stating one of those mobile operators leaked the information to the press. The article does suggest the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 will be shown off at Samsung Unpacked alongside the Galaxy S20 series of phones – we’d expected that, but it’s reassuring to hear the idea backed up with this rumor. Whether the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 turns out to be the most affordable foldable phone yet with those low prices, a more ‘mid-range’ foldable (but still with a price below anything else like it), or just as pricey as its predecessor, we’ll apparently find out come February 11 at Samsung unpacked. Stay tuned to TechRadar in the mean time for all the leaks, rumors and news on the phonemaker's second big foldable handset. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Much like the best gaming mouse for your needs, a gaming keyboard will give you that edge you’ve been seeking, and a cheaply-made budget keyboard simply won’t cut it. In fact, unlike many other PC components and peripherals, keyboards designed specifically for gaming can actually make you better at the PC games you play. So we went ahead and put together a list of the best gaming keyboards on the market. As far as gaming peripherals go, not just any reliable keyboard will do if you want to annihilate your opponents and make it to the top of the leaderboard. The best gaming keyboard 2020 at a glance
The SteelSeries Apex Pro’s svelte aesthetic and clever OLED display are just the appetizers. The SteelSeries Apex Pro gets our coveted 5-star rating for many reasons, the biggest of which are its stunning and solid build, custom actuation and comfortable – not to mention, quiet – magnetic switches. Performance-wise, it’s among the best gaming keyboards we’ve tested yet, which makes its $199 price tag worth the splurge. Read the full review: SteelSeries Apex Pro If you have the need for speed, then the Huntsman Elite is your best bet, thanks to its new optomechanical switches. That sounds like a mouthful, but essentially, it means that Razer has managed to combine mechanical switches with optical sensors. This unthinkable allows the Huntsman Elite to take its actuation to the next level, and you would be hard-pressed to find a faster keyboard on the market. Switches aside, it’s also remarkably comfortable to type on. Plus, it’s covered with more RGB lighting than you can shake a stick at. Sure, it needs two USB cables for power and costs a small fortune, but with tech like this, it’s absolutely worth it. Read the full review: Razer Huntsman Elite The Roccat Vulcan 120 should be at the top of your gaming keyboard wish list, if you want one that looks and feels good. This svelte keyboard uses Roccat’s own Titan switches, rather than the Cherry MX switches found on most other keyboards on this list, and we can vouch for how superb they are. This gaming keyboard combines amazing tactile feedback with quiet and comfort. It really isn’t hard to see why this is one of the best gaming keyboards on the market today. Read the full review: Roccat Vulcan 120 Aimo One of the biggest issues with Cherry MX Red keys is that even though they’re good for gaming, they’re not really ideal for typing anything other than your Steam credentials. That’s exactly why the Logitech G513 and its Romer-G Linear switches steal the show. With its brushed metal finish that is, miraculously, practically immune to fingerprints, it all adds up to one of the best gaming keyboards to date. Read the full review: Logitech G513 When you think Alienware, “value” isn’t the word that comes to mind. But, this time around, the Alienware Pro Gaming Keyboard AW768 is a genuinely great deal. At under 100 bucks or quid, you’re getting the toughest gaming keyboard fitted with mechanical keys, dedicated macro keys and slick aesthetics. It’s not the most feature rich keyboard in the game, but at this price, it really doesn’t need to be. One of the best gaming keyboards in 2020, the Alienware Pro Gaming Keyboard AW768 gets the job done, and looks good while doing it. Read the full review: Alienware Pro Gaming Keyboard AW768 Not everything has to be super high-end to be good, and the Cooler Master MasterSet MS120 is the perfect example. Though this one’s a keyboard and mouse set, the keyboard is the star of the show. Sitting at just under a hundred bucks, the MasterSet’s keyboard is affordable while being up there with its more premium ‘mem-chanical’ competitors in terms of quality. The switches on offer bring a ton of tactile feedback and deep travel. It’s quiet as well, so you can furiously pounding away during an intense late-night Overwatch match without worry. The Cooler Master MasterSet MS120 is, without a doubt, one of the best gaming keyboards under $100. Read the full review: Cooler Master MasterSet MS120 We have tested many wired gaming mice over the last few years, but we haven’t seen that many wireless gaming keyboards and even less that we actually liked. That is, until the Corsair K63 Wireless keyboard entered the scene. The computer peripherals company took what made the wired version of the K63 so great, and put it into a wireless version – without compromising on much at all. Packing tight Cherry MX Red switches, full RGB lighting and convenient media controls, the K63 wireless is proof that wireless keyboards can be very capable in 2020, even for gaming. Read the full review: Corsair K63 Wireless A $159 price tag on a gaming keyboard might a tad too steep, but the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum, one of the best gaming keyboards we’ve tested in the last year, really does give you a lot of ounce for your bounce. We’re not talking the more trivial bells and whistles like fancy RGB lighting either – although since we are on the subject, this one’s got a whole lot of them, not to mention its integrated 19-zone light bar and the 16.8 million color options, to boot. By bang, we actually mean its 6 dedicated macro keys, 8MB on-board storage and aircraft-grade anodized brushed aluminum frame. Read the full review: Corsair K95 RGB Platinum You might be thinking that if you’ve seen one of the best gaming keyboards, you’ve seen them all: big, garish hunks of metal with bright RGB lighting. Well, the Havit Low Profile Mechanical Keyboard will surprise you. While it definitely has the RGB lighting (honestly, how could it not?), it leaves the rest of the cliches in the past where they belong. Appealing and responsive, this keyboard is only as big as it needs to be, and is thus extremely comfortable to type as well as game on. There are no multimedia buttons, but we’d happily make that trade any day for a keyboard this good at such a low price. Read the full review: Havit Low Profile Mechanical Keyboard Shelling out more than $100 for a great gaming keyboard is to be expected if you’re even slightly serious your gaming performance. But the beauty of Razer Huntsman Tournament Edition is that it manages to deliver fast performance without being the most expensive keyboard in town. True, there aren’t a lot of features here, which puts it behind many of its feature-rich rivals, but it makes up for that by being small and boasting a removable to make it perfectly portable for on-the-go gaming. We've put in a considerable amount of dust-busting hours to rate and review the vacuum cleaners listed below, so you know which is the best model to buy in 2020. So, with not a speck of dust left here at TechRadar towers, these are the best vacuum cleaners you can buy right now…
Best vacuum cleaners at a glance
Best vacuum cleaners of 2020: rankedAdding another integer and two years of R&D to its V-series cordless range, Dyson’s V11 Absolute takes another giant leap forward for vacuum cleaner kind. It’s more potent than its best-in-class predecessor, cleans even better on all surfaces, is quieter, and has a properly marathon run-time of over 40 minutes on the seriously capable Auto power mode. The powered tools ooze design class and hard-earned experience in the field, with the mini motorized tool easily outperforming air-powered equivalents, and the adaptability of the vacuum when you pair the torque head with the Auto mode makes the V11 Absolute easy to use as well as powerful. It also has an LCD screen, a first for Dyson, which tells you the exact run-time remaining, where blockages are located and how to clear them. The V11 Absolute doesn't come cheap, but we think it’s worth the money if you want simply the best cordless vacuum cleaner available today.
Running the Dyson V11 Absolute a close second is the Shark DuoClean Cordless IF260UKTH, especially if the price of the Dyson is out of your reach. The Shark is still at the higher end of the price range for cordless vacuums, but it delivers great performance on a range of different floor types, and comes with a huge arsenal of tools. Two batteries give you a total of just over 60 minutes run-time, and with modes for different floor types, a timed boost mode and multiple tools, including an Anti-Allergen Dust Brush, the Shark gives you plenty of options. It also has a light on the floor head, so you can see dirt no matter where you need to clean. The Flexology wand is a great feature of the DuoClean Cordless IF260UKTH, making cleaning under furniture easier as well as shrinking its size for storage. Throw in an Anti-Allergen seal and Anti-Allergen brush for allergy sufferers – 99.9% of allergens should be trapped in the vacuum – and you're onto a winner.
Roidmi has won no less than six design awards for its innovative S-series cleaners, and with a 270-degree handle they're as functional as they are good-looking. The Roidmi S1E is the entry-level vacuum in the S series, and while it can’t pack the suction punch of our top cordless cleaners it comes in at fraction of the price of those. It’s lightweight, and easy to carry and use in both stick cleaner or handheld mode, and it comes with a good selection of tools, including a motorized mattress brush to make upholstery cleaning easy. The S1E excels noise-wise too, as even though its decibel levels are similar to other cordless vacuums, its softer tone feels less intrusive, and you can chat while cleaning without having to shout. The suction could be stronger, especially when it comes to deep-cleaning carpets, but with stylish looks, supreme ease of use, and a very useful run-time of 40 minutes, it’s a great everyday floorcare option. Pet hair is no match for the Hoover H-Lift 700, which earns its number 4 spot whether it's clearing hair from the carpet with the main floor head or the dog bed with the mini turbo tool. The turbo tool also makes cleaning stairs a breeze, a task that's made easier by the H-Lift 700's lift-away mode, which lightens the carrying load. And all this comes at a pretty reasonable price. A large-capacity bin, long reach thanks to a 2.5m hose and 8m power cable, three different cleaning modes – upright, lift and stick – and a great selection of tools make the H-Lift 700 a brilliantly versatile corded cleaner. The suction may not be as good as some other cleaners here, but the flexibility it provides for such a good price makes it an attractive purchase. Another great corded option, the Shark DuoClean Powered Lift-Away Upright NZ801UKTDB is a limited-edition vacuum that's only available direct from Shark. It’s a powerful cleaner that picks up both pet and human hair with ease – and Shark’s Anti Hair Wrap tech means fewer hairs getting tangled around the brush. It comes with a quirky selection of tools including a car detailing kit, dolls-house sized mini tools for super-precise cleaning, and a long under-appliance tool that's ideal for getting the fluff out from under the fridge. Sharks’ regular tools are all present and correct too, including an air-powered turbo brush. The NZ801UKTDB is a little on the heavy side, but it moves over all floor types easily, and in Lift-Away mode it's much lighter, and great for stair-cleaning. If you're looking for a corded machine that can tackle a wide array of vacuuming tasks, this Shark is a great bet. Lightweight, maneuverable and able to stand upright on its own – unusual for a stick cleaner – the Bosch BCH7PETGB is a great cleaner to have around the house. It’s essentially a cordless upright, but it also comes with tools that you can use with a hose, and a carry-strap for mobile cleaning – although this is a bit fiddly to set up – and it's light enough that you don’t notice the weight in either mode. You won’t get great results on the lowest power setting, as although this gives you 75 minutes run-time, suction is negligible; on the mid setting, though, the Bosch performs solidly for 25-30 minutes, which is enough time to get through plenty of cleaning. General vacuuming is quick and easy – one floor head works for all floor types, and SmartSensor technology monitors the suction pressure and lets you know when to change the filter. Super-handy and easy to use, the Bosch BCH7PETGB is a versatile grab-and-go cleaner. The Hoover H-Free 800 is a high-tech cordless cleaning option, coming with an app that lets you keep an eye on the battery level and tells you when the bin needs emptying; you can also set up parental controls, and it even counts the calories you've burned while cleaning. Three cleaning modes and no less than eight tools make this cordless vacuum about as versatile as they come, and it's nicely lightweight too. It’s excellent at cleaning pet hairs from rugs and dry spills from tiles, and it's no slouch over carpets, even if it doesn’t manage the deep cleaning of the very best cordless models. If you need some extra cleaning gumption the super-powerful turbo mode doesn’t disappoint, although the run-time is relatively short in this mode. The H-Free 800 is an excellent all-round cleaner for a decent price. Easy to use, and delivering excellent results on different floor types, the cordless Vax Blade 2 Max 40V offers powerful suction and long run-time for a great price. It has bright lights on the floor head, so you won’t miss any dirt, and a good-sized bin for a cordless machine too, meaning fewer bin-emptying interruptions when cleaning. The Blade 2 Max is easy to use, but it's let down by how heavy it feels in the hand – your arm may not be able to hold out for as long as the battery. The Blade 2 Max delivers great cleaning results on different floor types, and it's no slouch when it comes to tackling pet hair; however, it's far from the lightest-feeling or quietest cordless cleaner out there. Sebo has built up a loyal fan base for its quirky vacuums, and the Felix Wild ePower is likely to gain it a few more. The fabulously eccentric design and animal-print bag-wrap decorate a solid old-school corded cleaner that feels like it could withstand a nuclear strike. Its cleaning chops are equally robust. The Felix Wild ePower delivers a super-deep clean on carpets, with all the dust kept inside the cleaner thanks to filtering bags and a separate washable filter assembly. It's far from a lightweight option though; it feels weighty to push around, and using it as a portable cleaner without the floor head is rather cumbersome. One for Sebo fans, and those looking for something different to brighten up the cleaning chores, the Felix Wild ePower is proof that there's life in the bagged vacuum cleaner yet. If you're alarmed at the high prices some of the latest vacuums can command, Swan’s Eureka range aims to deliver on value, if not looks. The Eureka MultiForce Pet is an affordable mains-powered, bagless cylinder cleaner that offers decent cleaning power and good-sized bin. The short cable, noisy motor and plastic build are all forgivable at the price, and if you can see past those foibles the MultiForce Pet cleans well on carpets and takes pet hair in its stride. Its bin is simply huge at two liters, the filters are HEPA-class and washable, and the turbo tool is great for pet beds and stairs. While the design and build quality are about as basic as modern cleaners get, Swan’s Eureka MultiForce Pet makes it into our top 10 by offering great value if you're on a budget. Best camera phone 2020: the top smartphone snappers around Posted: 16 Jan 2020 08:51 AM PST It's 2020, 108MP camera phones are a thing, some phones have as many as five snappers around the back and the Samsung Galaxy S20 is pegged to capture up to 8K video - 8K!? All this breakthrough technology is fantastic, but it also makes picking the right camera phone more confusing than ever. The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are Apple's finest camera phones to date, showcasing the ways Apple's imaging software has finally caught up with the competition. There's a dedicated night mode and an ultra-wide angle camera on all three, and the 4K video they capture is nothing short of stunning when the light is right. Want to know more about dual-cameras? Check out our video below. This year, Google's off to a shakier start. The once camera phone champion introduced a second camera on its Pixel 4s, so they now have a zoom lens to get you closer to the action. That said, Google's straggling behind in one key area - ultra-wide photography. The third, GoPro-style all-encompassing camera is missing. Still, its new Astrophotography mode can capture night skies, stars and even entire galaxies, and the main camera is still a corker. What's more, it's all to play for with Huawei in hot political water. The Chinese tech giant's only 2019 flagship available in the UK is the P30 Pro, with the new Mate 30 Pro unreleased in Europe. As for the US - no Huawei devices are currently being sold there. At TechRadar we put smartphone cameras through rigorous testing in different lighting conditions, scenarios, and snap people, pets, plants and more to work out how each camera fares in the real world. Beyond the specs and capabilities of the cameras, there are a number of aspects you'll also want to consider. For example, getting a high-storage option or one that supports a microSD card will be helpful if you capture lots of 4K video, and flagging fundamental shortcomings like battery life so you don’t find yourself out of juice before the day is done. So to help you, we've compiled this list of the best camera phones, that we've tested extensively, to help you when it comes to choosing your next camera phone. The iPhone 11 Pro doesn’t just feature the best smartphone camera Apple’s ever made, it’s also the best camera phone money can buy for a certain type of user. It’s reliable - you take a shot and it’s likely going to be a good one, even in middling light. Dynamic range is strong, and with three cameras, it’s versatile too. The primary camera features a 26mm focal length, perfect for grabbing everyday snaps. The ultra-wide camera takes a step back so you don’t have to, getting more in the frame with its 13mm focal length. As for the telephoto camera, as with the iPhone XS, it zooms into your subject with a 52mm focal length - perfect for portraits. While there’s no manual mode and the 12MP resolution is meagre on paper compared to some of the competition, results still impress, and Apple has introduced a new night mode which can hold the shutter open for incredible low light photography. This can’t beat the Astrophotography feature on the Pixels when steadied on a surface or a tripod, but handheld, it’s up there with the best of them. Add to the mix a beautifully consistent color and tonal profile across all three cameras, and if you’re an Apple fan looking for a camera champ, this is as good as it gets. Read our full iPhone 11 Pro review The Pixel 4 is probably the most mixed bag in our list; on the one hand, it’s a fantastic camera phone with capabilities even DSLR users can only dream of, made possible by the almost 5-minute long-exposure Astrophotography mode. On the other hand, however, it’s a pricey flagship with poor battery life and no ultra-wide camera. If you’re thinking about picking one up, therefore, we’d urge you to go for the Pixel 4 XL if you hope to make it through a full day as this bigger Pixel 4 lasts that bit longer. Both phones have the same excellent dual-camera, and it’s a corker. Despite its main sensor being just 12.2MP, similar to the iPhone 11 Pro, it grabs beautifully balanced pictures almost every time. The Pixel 4s also introduce a handy exposure control when taking a shot, so you can boost shadows separately to overall brightness, ensuring detail pops even in darker spots and can stay tapered in highlights. When the light drops, get the phone on a steady surface, point it at the sky, and it will engage its acclaimed Astrophotography mode, capturing night skies, stars and even galaxies on a clear night. Despite this win though, one notable omission on the new Pixels is an ultra-wide camera, so if you know you’ll want to capture GoPro-style super-wide shots, you might want to look at any other phone in our best camera phone list. Read our full Google Pixel 4 review The Huawei P30 Pro has got to be pretty special, given the fact it still clings onto a top three spot despite launching at the beginning of 2019. Its excellence comes down to its 'periscope' telephoto lens which takes astounding optically zoomed-in shots at a distance, and its fantastic low light performance, that actually bests the iPhone 11 Pro and Google Pixel 4s in automatic mode, though not always in night mode. There were a lot of cameras to test on this phone, including four on the back: a 40MP main lens, an 8MP telephoto lens, a 20MP ultra-wide lens, and then a ToF (time-of-flight) camera to sense depth for portrait photos. The Huawei P30 Pro camera also uses an RYYB (red yellow yellow blue) sensor instead of the industry-standard RGB (red green blue) sensor to capture more light, and it shows. The snaps we took for our review had more detail and less shadow than most of the competition, yet they didn't look completely overexposed. It's all amazing for a smartphone, but not entirely perfect. We did notice some purple fringing in areas, and the camera software controls aren't always responsive when switching between ultra-wide, 5x zoom, 10x zoom and digital 50x zoom. But the fact that you can get insanely close to objects with a 50x zoom and also shoot at night as if all of the lights were on really sets a new bar for camera phones. Read our full Huawei P30 Pro review Samsung’s smart dual-aperture main camera introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S9 is back, flipping between f/1.5 and f/2.4 without breaking a sweat. This time, on the Note 10 Plus, it’s combined with a 12mm ultra-wide camera that lets you grab wider shots than virtually any other camera phone around. That isn’t the only addition to the Note 10 Plus - this time, there’s a time-of-flight sensor, as found on the Huawei P30 Pro, and this captures depth information for improved background defocus and bokeh when shooting in Live Focus (portrait) mode. Samsung’s camera UI is also incredibly comprehensive, with a pro mode that can keep the shutter open for in excess of 30 seconds, as well as an improved night mode, which tries to take down the likes of Huawei and Google. Unfortunately, this is where it drops the ball by comparison, but despite good, not sensational night shots, the Note 10 is still a seriously good camera phone, and its clever S Pen can even act as a remote shutter for the times you prop your Note on a surface and snap stepped-back group shots. Read our full Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus review Unlike the iPhone 11 Pro, the vanilla iPhone 11 misses out on a telephoto camera, instead packing an Asus ROG Phone 2-style wide + ultra-wide dual snapper around the back. Still, we’re delighted to see the new long exposure night mode fires up when shooting in low light on this lower-cost model. This means the iPhone 11 can see in the dark, even when you’re hand-holding the phone, and the photo quality across its primary and ultra-wide cameras is fantastic. Another area all the iPhones in our list excel is video capture; they all shoot 4K resolution video at up to 60fps, and do so across all their lenses. With smooth transitions between lenses and iMovie on board for basic edits, if we were going to pick up a smartphone for some easy-to-use, high-quality filmmaking, it would be any of the iPhones on our list. Read our full iPhone 11 review The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus features a triple-lens camera for a traditional wide-angle, telephoto and ultra-wide setup. The primary 12MP camera takes excellent photos with the same dual-aperture tech featured on every Samsung flagship since the S9, and just like the Note 10, there’s an ultra-wide camera too, grabbing a GoPro-esque angle-of-view. Instantly, we’re off to a versatile start. Another highlight of the S10 Plus is video, which, just like the iPhone, impresses thanks to fantastic image stabilization and the ability to capture up to 4K resolution at 60fps. It can also shoot full-resolution video across all its cameras, and a world-first, the S10 Plus supports HDR10+ video capture. This prevents highlights from being overexposed, while also pulling out more detail from shadows. While still a work in progress, it’s exciting to see manufacturers other than just Sony experimenting with HDR video. Read our full Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus review The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom is the third smartphone in our list to feature a periscope camera that shoots with a roughly 5x optical zoom. Its main camera captures detailed stills at 12MP by default, but that can be bumped up to 48MP when the light is right. Additionally, there’s an ultra-wide camera which snaps with a 16mm focal length. This versatility when it comes to shooting with phones packing big optical zooms can’t be overstated. Ideal for concerts and sports events, the Reno can grab 20 burst shots close-up, so you can make sure you grab that decisive moment, and bin the pictures that don’t make the cut. The Reno 10X Zoom was lacking a few features when it launched; you couldn’t shoot video with the ultra-wide or zoom cameras for example. In addition, photography enthusiasts would have felt the absence of RAW capture. That said, there’s a competent pro mode for manual shooting, and a night mode too, which helps keep it competitive, even if it can’t topple the likes of the P30 Pro. Read our full Oppo Reno 10X Zoom review The OnePlus 7T Pro’s triple camera array features a primary 48MP half-inch sensor and a wide f/1.6 lens. This is the same sensor as found in the Oppo Reno 10X Zoom, and indeed the OnePlus 7 Pro. There’s also an 8MP telephoto camera that packs a roughly 3x zoom - more than most of the competition, plus a 16MP ultra-wide camera that shoots with a 117-degree field of view. Shooting modes are plentiful, and OnePlus has also included a new action cam-esque super steady mode. This drops the resolution down to 1080p and reduces low-light performance, but locks footage for some of the steadiest video capture we’ve ever seen from a smartphone. The 7T Pro’s primary and telephoto lenses both feature OIS, and there’s a new Super Macro mode on the ultra-wide camera too. This enables focus as close as 2.5cm from an object, which grabs stunning levels of detail and incredibly shallow depth of field. While the low light performance can’t quite topple the top dogs in our list, given the OnePlus 7T Pro’s price, it’s unequivocally great value for money across-the-board, especially when you factor in all the other fancy specs it packs. Read our full OnePlus 7T Pro review If you’re a videographer, or a wannabe videographer who fancies a phone with pro-grade video recording controls, then the Sony Xperia 5 is the only choice for you. Sure, other phones like the P30 Pro have manual video capture, but the Xperia 5 takes it to another level, introducing smart features like rack focus, so at the press of a button you can pan between two focal points you set yourself. The Xperia 5 even lets you change the video camera’s shutter angle, shoot in 21:9 aspect ratio, and capture footage with a beautifully flat color profile that’s perfect for color grading in pro apps like DaVinci Resolve. All this pro video capture is done in the Cinema Pro app, but even the standard camera app shoots brilliant footage, with 4K HDR recording that’s very nicely stabilized. We’ve been harping on about video, but the Sony Xperia 5 is a competent stills smartphone too thanks to its wide, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras, and its realistic night mode which doesn’t artificially brighten things up as much as the competition. Where it drops the ball, and the reason it isn’t higher on our list, is dynamic range - it can struggle with bright spots, but irrespective, it’s definitely Sony’s finest camera phone to date, and a top choice for filmmakers.
