Disney, Apple and Amazon join Netflix and YouTube in reducing streaming quality

Desperate times call for desperate measures – and Disney, Apple and Amazon have now joined Netflix and YouTube in reducing the video quality of their streaming services across Europe.

The idea is to reduce the strain on internet networks across the continent, and it's something the European Union authorities have specifically requested in order to keep the digital traffic flowing.

Disney Plus is opening its doors in most of Europe this coming Tuesday, March 24, though the launch in France has been pushed back to April 7. According to an official statement, bandwidth use will be cut by a quarter.

Amazon has taken a similar approach with its Prime Video service over the last few days, promising to "reduce streaming bitrates whilst maintaining a quality streaming experience" in the European countries where it operates.

Putting the brakes on

While Apple hasn't made any official announcement yet, 9to5Mac has spotted a reduction in video quality in Europe in recent days – quite an aggressive reduction in fact, though it may even out over time.

Netflix and YouTube were the first streaming services to fall in line with the EU directive, though it now appears that everyone with a video platform is going to be taking steps to tackle the huge increase in people stuck at home.

While network operators have said they are confident that there's enough spare capacity in the system to cope with everyone becoming habitual binge watchers, it would appear that no one wants to take any chances.

As yet there's no sign of similar movies in the US or elsewhere.  At the same time, tech companies are busy pushing out trustworthy coronavirus information through apps and sites that are easy to access.

You can now ask Siri questions about the Covid-19 disease

Apple is doing its bit in the fight against the new coronavirus, and has updated its Siri voice assistant to answer some simple questions about Covid-19, pointing people towards some of the authoritative health resources online.

As reported by CNBC this weekend, voice queries like "hey Siri, do I have the coronavirus?" will lead you through a series of quick questions about symptoms such as a dry cough and shortness of breath.

Of course Siri is by no means a replacement for a medical professional, but its answers have been provided by the US Public Health Service, and Siri can direct you to the Centers for Disease Control website or even get you to ring the emergency services.

For the time being this question-and-answer flow is only available in the US, it would appear – if you ask the same questions in the UK, for example, you'll get pointed to the UK government Covid-19 site immediately.

Tech vs coronavirus

Like the rest of the world, the tech industry is reeling from the impacts of the coronavirus – streaming services are reducing their video quality, major events are being canceled, and many of us are having to switch to remote working software.

At the same time, the biggest names in technology are lending a hand to the efforts to get the spread of Covid-19 under control. Earlier this weekend, it was announced that Apple is donating two million N95 respirator masks to hospitals in the US.

Google has launched its own coronavirus information hub, where you can find details about the virus and Covid-19 – symptoms, treatments and so on. It's also displaying more relevant links alongside searches around coronavirus.

For the moment it seems as though the launch of products like the iPhone 12 and the PlayStation 5 won't be delayed by the coronavirus, but it's going to be a long time before everything gets back to normal.

Can Loyica become next unicorn from Dubai in CRM software business?

Dubai-based tech startup Loyica is targeting small entrepreneurs and SMEs who cannot afford a customer relationship management (CRM) from the big players with its flexible and advanced features and at a fraction of the cost.

CRM is a tool to manage a company’s interaction with current and potential customers and improve business relationships. It compiles data from different communication channels such as website, telephone, emails, social media platforms, marketing materials and businesses learn more about their target audiences to better serve them.

Ali Homadi, CEO of Dubai-based Loyica, told TechRadar Middle East that other products in the market are so complicated and that is what is scaring everyone to use a CRM in the Middle East.

“People in the Middle East wants everything to be simple, run smoothly and fast. We saw the biggest gap in the market. There was no home-grown product and there is no support for startups and SMEs to educate them about the system and the processes,” he said.

Starting the journey in 2016, the UK-based Homadi, with deep roots in Dubai, took three years to build the first phase.

After the second year, he gave the CRM software - Saphyte - to his friends, startups and families to get their feedback and to rectify teething problems.

He added that Dubai always has the best things and the Emirate will be a stepping stone to his growth.

“It will be easy for me to expand into Europe and globally with the success in Dubai. We are confident enough to take on the big players in the industry. Everyone has their target markets,” he said.

The big players in the CRM space are Salesforce, Adobe, Oracle, SAP, Microsoft, Slack and HubSpot.

Homadi said these big companies not only sell the software but also charges for implementation.

“We don’t charge extra and are flexible on the processes and customisation. It is very easy to customise solutions and fields to multiple layers and stages on our software and all the processes can be installed and implemented within two days. For customisation, big players need to do coding but in our software, it is in the library and companies need to just drag and drop,” he said.

Focus on big data rather than AI

When compared to Zoho, which also targets startups and SMEs in the CRM space, is cheaper than Saphyte but Homadi claims that his CRM offers much more efficiency than Zoho.

Loyica charges $99 per user for the suite and they also have a $15 per user just for collecting data and writing notes.

“Souq.com was acquired by Amazon and Careem was acquired by Uber but behind these two tech unicorns, they had a CRM connected to their business and it was not just the frontend app. So, why don’t we give a local CRM to run businesses in the UAE? Many marketing companies in the UAE don’t have their product and outsource it to third parties,” he said.

Moreover, he said that companies will have local support on the ground and these big tech companies don’t entertain smaller companies.

Homadi proudly claimed that they have three ISO certifications [quality management, business continuity management and information security management] and is audited by auditors.

Loyica has 1,000 users for its CRM in the UAE and Europe.

“We are growing organically and globally. Our target is to have 10,000 customers from the UAE this year and open an office in either in the UK or Australia next year,” he said.

When AI is gaining traction globally, Homadi is not in favour of using AI into his systems.

“What AI is predicting is not precise and accurate data but we use big data analytics. We want to give our customers a precise data and big data is the next big thing even though everyone is focusing on AI. As a business, the main focus should be towards the data and how to manage the data to bring meaningful insights. They should work with precise and real data rather than predicted data,” he said.

Moreover, he said that CRM solutions generate so much useful data and help analyse complex data sets that take traditional data-processing software too long to process, even with the help of human intervention.

According to McKinsey, retailers that invest in big data get RoI (return on investment) as much as about 15% to 20% out of their investments.

“Businesses can predict a change in traffic, reduce customer churn and encourage purchase behaviour to boost sales and profit,” he said.

Despite this, Loyica uses AI in its software to remember the tools used by the customers.

Homadi is not resting on its laurels and is building another product, one of the modules focused from the ERP but a full end-to-end solution, and will be launched by the end of the year to help businesses become more efficient and allowing transforming their businesses digitally.

He did not give more details about the product and is waiting to give it a good name.

“The two products can be used to run the sales, marketing, support, project management, HR and admin,” he said.

New iPad Pro 2020's Magic Keyboard won't help me use my tablet how I want

Apple announced the new iPad Pro 2020 models with as much of a song and dance as you can muster through an online newsroom post, with the big selling points being both the LiDAR sensor on the front of the devices, and compatibility with the new Magic Keyboard, which comes with a trackpad, turning your tablet into a pseudo-laptop.

The Magic Keyboard joins the Smart Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil in the roster of peripherals you can buy for your premium slate, and while I’m not sold on the thing (iPad Pros sit in that sweet spot between smartphone and laptop, the Magic Keyboard skews that balance), some people might find it useful.

However, I’ve been using the iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) daily for almost a year now, complete with the Smart Keyboard Folio and Apple Pencil to really round off the experience, and there’s a big issue with the former addition which the Magic Keyboard doesn’t look set to fix – the issue of protection and durability.

A case study

The Smart Keyboard Folio – and, by the looks of it, the Magic Keyboard, although we haven’t tested it yet – works like a case, wrapping around the iPad Pro when it’s closed, and acting as a stand when in action.

As a case, though, the folio doesn’t function very well at all. From less than a years’ use, my one boasts a plethora of injuries, ranging from scuffed edges and various marks to several noticeable areas where the outer layer has bubbled up, like a blister on the material. It’s not exactly a good-looking case any more.

In addition, the iPad Pro hasn’t come away unscathed – some of the edges are marked, especially the buttons, there are some marks on the back that have no obvious cause, and the screen itself has faint but recognizable smudges in the shape of the keys from the keyboard (as the keyboard is pressed against the display when closed).

This wear and tear is despite me being fairly gentle with the tablet – it’s not like I’ve been climbing mountains or skiing with the thing, just putting it in a bag daily for work, and on adventures to coffee shops and cafes now and then.

The Magic Keyboard isn't magic

The Magic Keyboard doesn't look very protective

A little natural damage is expected when you’re using a device frequently, but the Smart Keyboard Folio didn’t protect our device as a case would have done, despite this being one of its two functions – and it doesn’t seem like the Magic Keyboard is set to change that.

Judging by pictures of the thing online, the Magic Keyboard offers no protection to the sides of the iPad Pro 2020, even less so than the Smart Keyboard Folio, which was a touch bigger than the tablet at the edges.

On top of that, it seems like the Magic Keyboard might be prone to wear and tear of its own, since it has a complicated scissor mechanism, lights, a USB-C port and more. Instead of protecting your new iPad Pro, the Magic Keyboard might open your gadgets up to a whole plethora of new problems.

A tablet isn’t a computer – you’re not going to leave it on a desk, visiting it when you need to do a task, play a game or just surf the web. It’s more like a phone that you’re going to carry everywhere with you, even more so than a laptop, as the iPad Pro is smaller and lighter than your average laptop.

If I’m to use my iPad remotely to work, I’m going to want it to be safe to move about, but I’m not sure I could recommend the Smart Keyboard Folio as adequate protection if you’re hoping your tablet will last you for a long time.

The Magic Keyboard doesn’t look set to fix these problems, and might even add some of its own, so instead of encouraging me to take my iPad Pro even more places with me to work, it’s actually making the good old pen-and-paper combo look more tempting.

After all, if I’m being asked to choose between ‘a highly functional iPad Pro that’s prone to damage’ or ‘a well-protected iPad Pro that’s missing some core functions’, I’m not going to pick either.

Doom Eternal seemingly sabotaged its own Denuvo anti-piracy tech

Doom Eternal comes with Denuvo anti-tampering software designed to prevent piracy, but apparently the game effectively torpedoed its own protection right from the get-go.

That’s because Bethesda reportedly included a Denuvo-free executable with the initial release version of Doom Eternal.

This was present in the version of the game provided by the Bethesda Launcher, with the DRM-less executable file simply sitting in a folder labeled ‘Original’ inside the main Doom Eternal folder (indicating that this was the original EXE, before DRM was added – it’s far smaller in size, unsurprisingly).

All folks had to do was copy that smaller EXE over the DoomEternalx64vk.exe file in the main folder to remove the DRM, with the game apparently functioning just fine when run with this alternative executable.

Prompt patch

As soon as this came to light, Bethesda removed the non-Denuvo EXE by patching it out, but at this point of course, the executable was already out there on the net, and those who still want it will doubtless find a way to get it.

Ars Technica spotted this and notes that while it couldn’t confirm these reports, CrackWatch has verified the existence of this executable. And indeed the buzz on forums is that crackers have already found a way to patch out the requirement to login with your Bethesda account the first time Doom Eternal is run (so you can play the DRM-less version offline, in other words).

So this would seem to be a major oversight by Bethesda, and to compound the embarrassment, it’s not the first time this has happened: Rage 2 also launched with a DRM-free executable, which was quickly patched out by the publisher, so this is essentially a repeat of that episode.

Bethesda isn’t the only firm to make this kind of blunder, though, as for example Devil May Cry 5 released on Steam with a leaked EXE – apparently meant for game testers pre-release – which had no Denuvo protection.

Even when a mistake like this doesn’t happen, crackers sometimes defeat Denuvo DRM very swiftly – like after four days in the case of Metro Exodus.

Denuvo DRM is controversial because the anti-piracy tech has been the subject of many arguments in the past concerning the fact that its usage causes something of a performance hit, and that’s obviously an unwelcome thought for PC gamers.

Doom Eternal at 8K sends a $2,500 graphics card to hell - but it's still a blast to play

Doom Eternal is the latest instalment in the iconic first person shooter game series, and now that it's launched, we couldn't wait to try it out in 8K on our specially-built gaming rig, which features the most powerful consumer graphics card in the world: the Nvidia RTX Titan.

We'd already found that even though Doom Eternal looks fantastic, it manages to run extremely well on a wide range of graphics cards at 4K, but running at 7,680 × 4,320 8K resolution is a whole other level of pain for even the most powerful of gaming PCs.

However, the good news is that Doom Eternal plays impressively well at 8K, easily surpassing our expectations. However, that 8K performance comes at a very high price, both in terms of cash and frame rates.

So, let's get right to it: how does Doom Eternal run at 8K resolution? We're pleased to say, pretty damn well, all things considered.

Playing Doom Eternal at 8K resolution and with graphics settings on 'Ultra Nightmare', which is the highest they will go, gave us average frame rates of 39.9 frames per second (FPS).

As we mentioned in our in-depth Doom Eternal GPU tests, the game doesn't have a built-in benchmark tool. Instead, we used MSI Afterburner to record the frame rates as we played. These results cover around 15 minutes of gameplay at the start of the game, and include tight corridors, large rooms filled with enemies and wide open spaces as well.

Managing almost 40FPS in ultra settings at resolutions of 7,680 × 4,320 is very impressive, however it's a far cry from the 60FPS minimum most PC gamers expect these days. Plus, if you have a monitor with a high refresh rate, where you usually expect frame rates easily above 100FPS, that 40FPS frame rate isn't going to impress you much.

It's also worth noting that Doom Eternal is a frantic, fast-paced game that's been designed to feel quick and responsive, so having average frame rates of 40FPS (and we recorded minimum frame rates of 18FPS), means you're not going to get the full experience playing at 8K, not matter how good it looks.

Of course, we were playing at the highest graphical settings, so if you spent a bit of time tweaking the graphics, you could boost that framerate higher. However, that leads us on to our other issue with Doom Eternal at 8K...

A monster GPU for monster slaying

To get 40FPS at 8K, we're running Doom Eternal on a PC with an Nvidia RTX Titan graphics card... which costs $2,499 (around £2,000, AU$3,600).

And that's for the GPU alone. We also played it on the Dell UltraSharp UP3218K monitor, which costs $3,899.99 (£3,200, around AU$ 7,000). 

Factor in the rest of the PC, and you're looking at a setup that costs in the region of $10,000 / £9,000 / AU$17,000... just to play a game at 40FPS.

So, is playing Doom Eternal at 8K worth it? No, not at all. Sure, you get bragging rights, but this is a game that places emphasis on speed, FPS and lightning-fast responses, things that are all sacrificed if you play at 8K.

And, while this game certainly looks nice in places, it's not meant to be a graphical showcase. Because hardly anyone will be playing the game at 8K, the textures aren't designed for those resolutions. So, when playing at 7,680 × 4,320, you're getting a hit to the performance without the corresponding bump in graphical fidelity.

Dropping the resolution to 4K, then, gives you a much better return on your investment. In fact, in our tests we found that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super, a GPU that's a fifth of the price of the RTX Titan, can manage 4K at 60FPS.


8K gaming: not ready for prime time, but getting there

So, Doom Eternal's 8K performance is a mixed bag. On the one hand, the fact it's getting over 30FPS (frame rates many people consider the absolute minimum for a playable game) at 8K is impressive.

We tried Gears 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at 8K resolutions, and both of those  games struggled to run at anything approaching a playable frame rate at 8K, despite the powerful (and very expensive) hardware they were running on.

This is testament to the devs over at iD Software, and the Vulkan API, Doom Eternal uses. This makes the game a brilliant PC port, with performance that easily beats the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, even on cheaper gaming PCs.

However, the Philips Brilliance 499P9H is unlike any other monitor on the market and it's on sale at Amazon for just $1,065, with a four-year warranty (roughly £870/AU$1900).

Aimed squarely at a business audience, the Brilliance 499P9H is packed with features, but will require a lot of deskspace. After all, this is a 49-inch display with a screen resolution of 5120x1440 pixels (or dual QHD) and a 32:9 aspect ratio - one that's not only very wide, but highly curved as well.

There's also more to this monitor than meets the eye; look closely at the top and you'll find a pop up webcam that allows you to sign in via Windows Hello facial recognition. Business users will also appreciate the inclusion of a KVM, which allows allows two computers to be connected to the same display.

It also features a built-in USB Type-C docking station that can provide up to 65W of power - enough for devices such as the Dell XPS 13 but probably not for the MacBook Pro 16  - and boasts a staggering 10 ports in total.

Two built-in speakers should provide a fair audio experience and there’s even a microphone for the purposes of video conferencing.
