Video calling app Zoom's iOS version is sharing user data with Facebook Posted: 26 Mar 2020 05:54 PM PDT Zoom's video calling service has been available for a while now but the unprecedented number of people working from home during the coronavirus pandemic has skyrocketed the app's popularity. However, research conducted by Vice's tech branch, Motherboard, has revealed that Zoom's iOS app has been secretly sharing analytical data with Facebook, even if the user doesn't have an account on the social media platform. The data being shared includes time the app is launched, device and location information, phone carrier, and analytical data that can be used to create targeted ads. Too much informationThe reason Zoom is able to share user data with Facebook, even if there's no linked social media account, is because the video calling app uses Facebook's software development kits (SDKs). So, when Zoom is downloaded and launched, it immediately connects to the Facebook Graph API. This is not a new practice: developers have long used Facebook SDKs to add features to their apps, although Facebook's terms of use require app makers to inform users of these data sharing practices. While Zoom's privacy policy mentions that the app may collect data related to a user's Facebook profile which may then be shared with third parties – although Facebook is not explicitly mentioned as a third party – there's no clear indication it will be doing the same for users who do not have a Facebook account. Not the first timeZoom does have a history of privacy issues. In 2019, a security researcher unearthed a bug that allowed webcams of Zoom users to be hacked without their knowledge, although the company has said that the issue has been resolved. Other recent news related to video chat security involves a man exposing himself in front of children on a video call after he was able to "guess" the link to the call. While this was not on a Zoom call (instead on an app called Whereby), TechCrunch reported last year that it was possible to hijack a Zoom meeting by "cycling through different permutations of meeting IDs in bulk". This was possible as the meetings weren't protected by a passcode. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recently explained how a host on a Zoom call can monitor the activities of participants while screen-sharing. If users record the video call, then Zoom administrators are able to "access the contents of that recorded call, including video, audio, transcript, and chat files, as well as access to sharing, analytics, and cloud management privileges". While the old security issues have since been resolved by Zoom, this new discovery highlights how simple technological solutions can sometimes come at the cost of privacy. Google's new true wireless Pixel Buds show up in FCC filing Posted: 26 Mar 2020 05:50 PM PDT Google’s second generation of Pixel Buds – a true wireless successor to its neckband-touting forebear – was announced in October during the company’s Made by Google event, and now they’ve been spotted passing through the FCC. The new Buds were scheduled to land sometime in Spring (for the US), and that season has just now begun, so the timing for them to gain certification from the FCC is right on track and they’ll likely be hitting shelves soon. Initially, we were fully anticipating the new Pixel Buds to launch at this year’s Google I/O event scheduled for May 12-14, but this was completely cancelled due to concerns over the coronavirus, so it’s likely that they’ll instead roll out with slightly reduced fanfare via a blog post or similar. The filing contains two different listings, with 9to5Google (who spotted the listing to begin with) positing that each model number could correlate to the earbuds and the charging case respectively. What we know so far of the new earbuds is that, unlike the original Pixel Buds, they will be truly wireless, with no cord to connect them. The charging case will be considerably more compact, sleek and compatible with wireless charging as well. The Buds themselves will offer 5 hours of listening on a single charge, and the case will hold an extra 24 hours in reserve. The new ear-tip design promises to offer more of a seal but still allows you to hear ambient sound with what Google calls a ‘spatial vent’. They’re sweat- and water-resistant, have a small wing to help secure them in place, feature touch sensors on each ‘bud that respond to tapping and swiping for control, and sport integrated Google Assistant (of course) for all your voice-control needs. While we still don’t have a firm release date on the new Google Pixel Buds, we can expect them to land in the coming weeks at a price of $179 (about £140 / AU$270, although global pricing hasn’t yet been announced). Star Trek: Discovery season 3: release date, trailer, new teaser and more Posted: 26 Mar 2020 05:07 PM PDT Energize! Star Trek: Discovery season 3 is official. The news about a third chapter for the USS Discovery came not long after the dramatic finale of the second, as Captain Pike and others await stranded in the present day with the others catapulted further into the future than we've ever been in Trek. And now, CBS has started teasing season 3. Discovery returns this year, and it'll follow Picard, which has now finished its run. Alex Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter that, "the intention is to have something Star Trek on the air all the time, but not necessarily on top of each other." Now that Star Trek: Discovery season 3 is certainly happening this year, here we investigate when exactly can expect the USS Discovery to land once again, who the new and returning cast members are, plus what the official trailer tells us. Note: if you haven't seen season 2 yet on CBS All Access in the US or Netflix internationally, make sure you do just that before you dive into this spoiler-filled guide.
Star Trek: Discovery season 3 release date: coming in 2020, but when?Season 3 was confirmed on January 18, 2019, the month the second season began. We’re still waiting for a specific release date, though. Season 1 premiered in September 2017, and season 2 arrived in January 2019. With that 16-month gap in mind and a 2020 release confirmed by Kurtzman above, the very earliest season 3 could release is in April, since Picard is releasing weekly until the end of March and it seems unlikely they'd debut new episodes at the same time. At the end of February, co-showrunner Michelle Paradise revealed on Twitter that season 3 has finished filming. Could a summer release date happen? Adding to the mix, a new teaser was released on Instagram that suggests we're close to learning more about the series' return date. The Star Trek: Discovery season 3 trailer reveals the future of the universeAbove we can see the state of the Discovery in the future. We also get a sneak peek of David Ajala (Nightflyers) as new character Cleveland Booker. As reported by Variety at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kurtzman said Booker or ‘Book’ "is going to be a character that breaks the rules a little bit." Ajala is joined by new cast members Maulik Pancholy (Dr Nambue, Chief Medical Officer on the USS Shenzhou), Terry Serpico (Admiral Anderson, a top Starfleet official), and Sam Vartholomeos (Connor, a Junior Officer also on the Shenzhou). Interestingly, we also see a United Federation of Planets Flag with only six stars - is the Federation no more in this time period? Could they be the 'ghosts' Book refers to in the trailer? It also looks like Burnham is spending a long time in her search to find "that domino that tipped over and started all of this." Early in the trailer we see Burnham change her hair and appearance, suggesting that her adventures may take months, or even years. Plenty of the Star Trek: Discovery season 3 cast are confirmedThe first trailer confirms the reappearance of a number of returning actors. They are:
It might be worth forgetting Captain Pike and Spock, as they languish in the present. "Our bridge crew is so capable," Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter. "We're going to be using all of them much, much more. Especially because this crew has forfeited their lives for each other." Star Trek: Discovery season 3's story is set way in the futureSo, how far did the Discovery go? Also at SDCC 2019, Kurtzman said: "Obviously we made a pretty radical jump into the future at the end of season two – we're going almost 1000 years into the future in season three, which is crazy. Further than any Trek series has ever gone before." 930 years to the as-yet-unexplored 32nd century, to be specific. Kurtzman also mentioned at the panel that he’s excited by the prospect of getting to "honor canon but shake it up hugely." For Sonequa Martin-Green, speaking to Syfy Wire, this is an opportunity for the show to boldly go where no one has gone before, properly. Visiting new planets, timelines, and sectors is "the perfect way to define us, because we are new yet familiar." Speaking of Burnham, we know that it’ll have an impact on her. Martin-Green said to TrekMovie that "there has been deep deep deep change [...] it’s linked to this very future we’re in. Basically, there’s a host of problems that this new future presents, an entirely brand-new tapestry of conflict." Can Discovery bounce back? The first season of Star Trek: Discovery proved a promising start to The Original Series, but it rather lost its way in season 2. Viewers waded through reams of exposition and technical jargon, and it mostly failed to capitalize on the engrossing, galaxy-consuming war of season 1. Hopefully this new Frontier will be the fresh start the series needs, without having to lean on familiar characters. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Chinese cybercriminal syndicate redoubles espionage efforts Posted: 26 Mar 2020 04:05 PM PDT The US cybersecurity firm FireEye has detected a surge in online espionage carried out by the Chinese hacking group APT41. The spike in activity from APT41 began at the end of January and lasted till mid-March during which time the group targeted 75 organizations from a number of different industries including telecommunications, healthcare, government, defense, finance, petrochemical, manufacturing and transportation. The group also targeted nonprofit, legal, real estate, travel, education and media organizations. In their report on APT41's recent activities, FireEye researchers Christopher Glyer, Dan Perez, Sarah Jones and Steve Miller explained that the group is likely responsible for launching one of the most widespread online espionage campaigns they've ever seen, saying:
“This activity is one of the most widespread campaigns we have seen from China-nexus espionage actors in recent years. While APT41 has previously conducted activity with an extensive initial entry … this scanning and exploitation has focused on a subset of our customers, and seems to reveal a high operational tempo and wide collection requirements for APT41.” Leveraging recently disclosed vulnerabilitiesAPT41 used known vulnerabilities in Citrix's Application Delivery Controller (ADC), Cisco's routers and Zoho's ManageEngine Desktop Central to launch their attacks on targeted organizations. The Citrix vulnerability was made public a month before the group's campaign began while a zero-day remote code execution vulnerability in Zoho's ManageEngine Desktop Central was discloses just three days before the group leveraged the security flaw. Although FireEye does not have a copy of the malware used against Cisco's routers, the company believes that APT41 designed its own custom malware to launch attacks against them. FireEye first gave a name to the Chinese hacking group last year but APT41 has been conducting state-sponsored espionage for some time now. In a statement to CyberScoop, FireEye explained the that motive behind APT41's latest campaign is unknown but there are multiple explanations as to why it launched cyberattacks on 75 organizations across a variety of industries, saying: “Based on our current visibility it is hard to ascribe a motive or intent to the activity by APT41. There are multiple possible explanations for the increase in activity including the trade war between the United States and China as well as the COVID-19 pandemic driving China to want intelligence on a variety of subjects including trade, travel, communications, manufacturing, research and international relations.”

Polaroid Now is an instant camera with handy autofocus skills – read our full review Posted: 26 Mar 2020 02:27 PM PDT If you're currently at home with a young family you might be looking for ways to keep everyone amused or distracted with a fun project – and the new Polaroid Now might just fit the bill. A point-and-shoot instant camera in the classic Polaroid mould, it shoots classic, full-size Polaroid film that is spat out instantly, but takes around ten or fifteen minutes to fully develop. What's new, though, is the addition of autofocus, which helps you get more consistent results than previous Polaroid Originals models and takes out some of the guesswork that's fairly common with instant cameras. The Polaroid Now's classic, boxy shape is quite large and tricky to use one-handed, but the size means it is also suitable for most ages, thanks to its large buttons and simple operation. We've been testing the new instant camera and our review concluded that compared to competing models from the likes of Fujifilm Instax "the Polaroid Now wins for sheer ease of use and its prints are larger".
Polaroid vs ZinkThe main difference between Polaroid Now and Zink cameras, like the Canon Ivy Cliq / Zoemini S, is that the Now's I-Type film uses a chemical process, rather than simply printing your images. This makes them larger and, when it comes to family shooting, often a bit more fun due to the delay in seeing your results. It's also what purists consider to be the 'proper' kind of instant film. That said, the film is slightly more than Fuji's Instax Square format film – a pack of I-Type film costs around $19 / £15 / AU$32, although you can get multi-packs for a slight discount. The Polaroid Now costs $100 / £120 (around AU$240 ) and for a more detailed look at the camera you can read our in-depth Polaroid Now review.
This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
IBM and The Weather Channel launch Covid-19 tracking maps Posted: 26 Mar 2020 02:01 PM PDT Finding accurate and up-to-date information on the spread of the coronavirus is essential for researchers and scientists which is why IBM and its subsidiary The Weather Channel have released new tools to help do just that. While there are already a number of tools available online from the WHO and John Hopkins University to track the coronavirus, fake coronavirus maps created by cybercriminals have also sprung up which infect users' systems with malware. IBM and The Weather Channel's new initiative combines data from legitimate sources in addition to reported data from both the state and county level in the US. All of this information is gathered on an incident map which displays color-coded reported case data for states and counties.
These new tools will also bring Covid-19 mapping and analysis to more users by displaying this information from within The Weather Channel's app and on its website. Analytics dashboardIn addition to bringing Covid-19 information to The Weather Channel, IBM has also launched a more in-depth analytics reporting dashboard that provides views of global reported cases as well as the rate of spread by using available data, county-by-county statistics and more. The company's new dashboard runs on its Watson and Cognos Analytics tools and is intended to be used by researchers, public officials and the general public. IBM is also providing fact-checking resources and practical guidance for Covid-19 patients and the general public. This will help keep people informed about the spread of the virus and the steps they can take to prevent themselves and others from becoming infected. By releasing a new dashboard and including coronavirus information directly in The Weather Channel app, IBM is making sure that researchers, scientists and the general public can remain informed without exposing themselves to potential security threats online.

The speed you need when you're doing everything from home Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:26 PM PDT If you're socially distancing and working from home, you're probably using more data across more devices than ever before. If you find yourself struggling to get decent speeds or you're bursting through your bandwidth caps, Three UK has everything you need. If you're like us, you probably chose your mobile broadband based on normal usage: podcasts or the odd TV programme on the commute, a bit of social media on the bus and so on. But now we're doing daytime video meetings with the office, having virtual meet-ups with friends and family and dealing with the extra demands of our children and their many devices. Three can help with that. Its network was designed specifically for data, and it has created a range of services that'll keep you connected through the current crisis and beyond. 5G broadband: super-fast and super-convenientIf you're in London, you'll be blown away by Three's incredible 5G service. It's incredibly, thrillingly fast and makes video meetings feel like you're in a movie, albeit a movie about meetings: 5G banishes the stutters and the lag to deliver silky-smooth video, super-fast uploads and downloads and the convenience of having the speed you need wherever you are. There's no need for a landline, to connect a cable or to wait weeks for an engineer: you can be online the next working day. 4G Broadband: get internet anywhereIf you're not currently in a 5G area, don't worry: Three's speedy 4G Broadband is just as convenient – once again there's no need for a landline, a cable or a visit from an engineer – and it's available to 99.8% of the UK population. All you need is a plug socket and you can bring fast 4G broadband anywhere you need it: the kitchen, the garage, even the garden shed. 4G MiFi: keep the kids (and the grown-ups) happyThree's MiFi is brilliant for devices like Nintendo Switches, iPod touches, tablets and laptops that can connect to Wi-Fi but that don't have their own mobile data connections. It's a portable Wi-Fi provider that connects to Three's fast 4G network and delivers Wi-Fi to as many as ten devices simultaneously. It's as small as a credit card but its battery lasts up to four hours, and with a 300 hour stand-by it's ideal for trips into the great outdoors when you're fed up staring at the same four walls. And at just £22 per month for unlimited data, it’s a broadband bargain. Unlimited SIMs: never miss the end of anythingSome mobile SIMs come with pretty severe data caps, and Murphy's Law says they'll always kick in at the worst possible moment: just before you find out whodunnit in your true-crime podcast, or before the final reveal in your favourite drama. With Three's unlimited SIMs you can be sure you'll never miss the end of anything: there's no data cap, and there are no speed limits either. Unlimited SIMs are available in 1-month, 12-month and 24-month flavours, and they're incredibly affordable: right now you can get unlimited data, minutes and texts on a 12-month plan for just £18 per month. They're 5G ready too, so if your device is 5G-compatible you can connect to 5G in London at no extra cost. Three is the magic numberThree can get you up and running with speedy 4G or 5G broadband in just 24 hours, and with plug and play there's no complicated installation, no cabling and no need for an engineer visit - which is handy, as many companies aren't sending out engineers at this time. Just use the coverage checker to confirm availability, choose your device and/or plan and you'll be online the next day. That's not all. If your phone or SIM Plan is 12GB or more you can use Go Binge to make your money go even further: Go Binge gives you unlimited streaming from your subscriptions to Netflix, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Deezer and more without using any of your data allowance. And when things get back to normal, Go Roam enables you to use your call, data and text allowance in 71 different countries without extra charges – so you can sit back, relax and stay connected without worrying about roaming fees. To find out how Three can deliver the speed you need to cope with everything from Skyping to streaming, visit the Three UK website. How the pandemic is forcing businesses to reevaluate their remote working and continuity practices Posted: 26 Mar 2020 01:00 PM PDT The strategy to work from home is a valid, proportional response to a pandemic (and many other Disaster Recovery scenarios). The problem many businesses are facing is that though some employees can and do work from home, the vast majority of office-based employees don’t, aren’t equipped to and possibly shouldn’t. Therefore, this perceived panacea to the current situation needs further thought and practical scrutiny before firms roll it out across their entire workforce. For over 20 years, I’ve worked with thousands of businesses on workplace continuity plans, and the following 5 key considerations must always be reviewed:
Devices and connectivityIf you are a laptop user, with a company mobile and data plan, you are a mobile user and can already work from home (or anywhere). If you are a ‘classic’ office-based worker, you probably have a desk phone with a switchboard extension or DDI and a desktop PC – you’re not set-up to work from home. The company therefore needs to consider whether it’s technically possible for you to work from home. There are a few popular choices: i) Equip users with a company-owned laptop, set-up by the IT dept ii) Allow users to use their own devices and provide access to a virtual desktop iii) Allow users to use their own devices to connect to their work desktop in the office iv) Allow users to have work applications installed directly on their own devices (not recommended) These solve the computing but not the network connectivity challenge. If you have home broadband then it’s not unreasonable to use that, along with a corporate VPN. If you don’t have broadband, then the business needs to buy it or equip staff with a MIFI 4G/5G dongle or phone. This leads onto the broader question of communications. There are some great collaboration and messaging tools (e.g. Microsoft Teams or Slack) which also include video conferencing to provide important human interaction. However, for customer facing roles, you will need to consider how voice communications can be delivered remotely. If users don’t have a company mobile, they could use a home phone or personal mobile - but this leads to problems with bills for work-calls and the confidentiality of personal numbers being shared with customers. The best solution is to use a to use a cloud-based, VoIP ‘soft phone’ using the internet to carry the calls. Users can make calls on their laptops remotely using just a headset as if they were in the office. Those that have used these will have experienced the frustration of calls occasionally breaking-up. If calls are internal then it’s tolerable, but for external calls to clients it’s not. Also, the risk of poor-quality voice-over-internet will increase as a result of additional home broadband utilisation. ApplicationsIf you’ve solved all of the problems listed above, you’re now able to use a desktop and make and receive calls. However, can you do everything you need to? Many firms use Office 365 and therefore email, office applications and shared documents can all be accessed with an internet connection. However, there are a good number of firms that still use legacy applications. These either can’t or won’t easily run over the internet and therefore the options detailed above really need some thought. Remotely connecting to an office PC that can run the legacy application may be the only way, but then you’ve got a bit of tech prep-work and user training to factor into your response plans. WFH capacityLet’s assume that 10-20% of staff normally work from home. You now face a scenario where it may be 50% (assuming you have split your office between home and office workers) or 100% if an office has closed. Your remote working technology, (routers, firewalls, VPNs) will probably not have been scoped for that capacity. Does your organisation have the infrastructure, network bandwidth and the licences to allow you to support the number of users? Outside your firm’s own scope is that of the public networks - both internet and mobile. Nearly all personal and home communication networks work on a contended basis. We all share the available capacity. The best way to think about this is motorway traffic during rush hour where loads of people all going in the same direction at the same time creates bottlenecks. Speed and quality will be impacted if a large proportion of the working population are all using mobile and home broadband connections at the same time. The earlier choices of applications and voice solutions therefore need to consider the bandwidth requirement and minimise that wherever possible. Working environmentYou might remember the BBC correspondent whose young child happily gate-crashed a live interview! In that case, he actually had an office where he worked from home. Many workers don’t have the luxury of an office. Younger workers in larger cities are likely to live in shared accommodation. An Executive Board making decisions on home working will have a perspective based on their own home environment. For many the reality is very different, working on a dinner table, perched on a kitchen top, or working from their lap on a settee. These are OK for the odd few hours of post dinner email catch-up, but not for eight hours straight for weeks or months. Firms have a Health and Safety obligation to their staff, wherever they work. In the office, staff may have particular chairs, RSI mitigation devices, anti-radiation screens etc. Most staff will be accommodating when at home, but some will need assistance so you should consider a simple home working self-assessment. Security & ConfidentialityFinally, assuming all of the above can be overcome, there is a fundamental question to ask – are we allowed to work from home? Since the last pandemic outbreaks in the mid 00’s we have had fundamental reviews of data privacy regulations (GDPR, PCI etc). We have also learned from breaches that data is subject to compliance and oversight wherever it lives. A worst-case example would be a homeworker, using their own PC; own mobile; working from a communal area in a shared flat; talking about and accessing company, personal and perhaps financial data. This method of working from home is simply not acceptable vs. the benefit. This won’t apply to all staff, but for many firms it highlights the potential issues and for alternative methods to be considered or their function suspended. Some general advice for remote working security: · Require passwords for all devices · Enable MFA for all applications · Encrypt all hard drives · Lock devices if an incorrect password is inputted too many times · Automatically log-out or lock devices after a period of inactivity · Enable remote deletion or wipe capabilities The government is planning the next phase of its response and firms are already enacting their Business Continuity plans. Whilst working from home is a well-trodden path, the reality for many is that it will be the devil in the detail that will make it a reality – or not. Fortnite developer Epic Games will be publishing Remedy's next two AAA games Posted: 26 Mar 2020 12:28 PM PDT Epic Games has inked publishing deals with Control developer Remedy Entertainment, Limbo creator Playdead and The Last Guardian creator genDESIGN. Much like it did with the Epic Games Store, the Fortnite developer is positioning its new ‘Epic Games Publishing’ (EGP) offshoot, launched on Thursday, as a “developer-first” initiative that lets studios retain 100% of all intellectual property rights and full creative control over their work. However while we haven't heard anything about Epic Games Store exclusivity on PC, it can be assumed if Epic is publishing the games. Epic says the multi-platform label will cover 100% of the costs of developing a title, including employee salaries, quality assurance, localization and marketing. Once a game has recouped its development costs, the company will split profits 50/50, with Epic saying it wants creatives to "earn a fair share for their work."
"We're building the publishing model we always wanted for ourselves when we worked with publishers," said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney in a statement. Hector Sanchez, who was named head of the new publishing model, added "genDESIGN, Remedy and Playdead are among the most innovative and talented studios in the industry, with strong visions for their next games. “They will have full creative control, while Epic will provide a solid foundation of project funding and services.” The exact games that will be coming from each of these studios have yet to be announced, but Remedy gave some details about its incoming title in a blog post. The first, described as its ‘most ambitious” project yet, is an AAA multi-platform game already in pre-production, and the second is a “new, smaller-scale project set in the same franchise.” Epic says it plans to announce more details on these studios' upcoming EGP titles, and additional developers and games, "in the coming months."

Google is getting back to work on Chrome updates Posted: 26 Mar 2020 11:44 AM PDT After recently making the decision to pause all Chrome updates to ensure stability, Google has now announced that it is once again ready to resume work on its browser and operating system. The reason behind the cancellation was to avoid causing severe disruptions to web developers, system administrators, Google's engineers and the countless number of people working from home during the coronavirus outbreak. Now though, Google has revealed in a blog post that future Chrome releases are coming, albeit with an updated release schedule.
Chrome updatesAccording to Google, beginning next week the current Chrome 80 release will begin receiving new security updates. Chrome 81, which was initially scheduled for a March 17th release, has been rescheduled for April 7 and Chrome 83 will release in mid-May. Earlier this week, Director of technical program management at Google, Jason Kersey said that the company will skip version 82 of Chrome and the features planned for it will find their way into Chrome 83. Pausing updates during this trying time made a great deal of sense to avoid disruption but now that the Chrome development team has adjusted to working remotely, Google's browser will once again receive security updates and new versions will continue development.

Malicious Android apps use coronavirus to hack user devices Posted: 26 Mar 2020 10:37 AM PDT The number of coronavirus-related apps on the Google Play Store has increased significantly over the past few weeks as both legitimate developers and cybercriminals look to cash in on users' fears surrounding the virus. By analyzing Android telemetry data, security researchers at Bitdefender have observed a huge spike in applications which contain either the worlds 'covid' or 'corona' and in total, the firm identified 579 apps that contained coronavirus-related keywords in their manifest. According to Bitdefender, 560 of these apps were legitimate and provided users with news about the coronavirus, information on how to avoid infection and medical booking services. However, many of these apps actually had nothing to do with the coronavirus at all, while others contained adware or were bundled with malware.
Once the coronavirus was declared a pandemic by the WHO, Google began adjusting the Google Play Store's search algorithms in order to filter or remove illegitimate coronavirus apps. However, when Bitdefender published its report on the matter, 22 apps using the 'coronavirus' keyword were still available on the Google Play Store and listed under the 'Health and Fitness' and 'Medical' categories. While many of these apps are legitimate, 280 others were removed from the store, including many regional or global coronavirus tracking apps. Coronavirus appsBy examining coronavirus apps on third-party marketplaces, Bitdefender found that many of them were malicious and were exploiting people's fears of the virus to install adware and malware on users' Android devices. One such example is an app that imitates a coronavirus information site to spread the Anubis banking Trojan. Once a user installs the app and gives it access to their device, it then requests a number of other permissions and accepts them by itself. The app takes users to a coronavirus statistics website to throw them off its track and hides its icon, while it continues its work in the background. The Iranian coronavirus app AC19 was another example Bitdefender discovered that is actually a piece of spyware. The sample discovered by the firm asks for permissions to scan for the coronavirus but in reality, the app is asking for sensitive Android app privileges to continue its malicious activities. An app called Coronavirus Tracker was also found to dispense adware to its victims. When first started, the app says that it is unavailable in a user's country and then hides itself. However, it then bombards users with unwanted ads. Bitdefender's researchers even found that the Joker malware was being distributed by a game called iFun. Senior e-threat analyst at Bitdefender, Liviu Arsene warned in his report that users need to be extra careful when installing new apps during this difficult time, saying: “The Coronavirus pandemic might have everyone running around after information, searching for applications that offer live monitoring or even medical appointments to get tested. It’s always recommended that you install only official apps from official marketplaces, and seek information only from official sources. Also, it’s crucial to make sure you have a mobile security solution that can keep you and your device safe from malware and other online threats.”
