The problem with Alexa: what’s the solution to sexist voice assistants?

If you have a smart speaker in your home, you probably interact with an AI-enabled voice assistant fairly regularly – and chances are you’re speaking to what sounds like a woman. 

Your voice assistant may have even been given a woman’s or feminine-sounding name, like Alexa, Cortana, or Siri, depending on which brand you bought your smart speaker from. Sure, some of these voice assistants can be configured to have a male-sounding speaking voice, including Google Assistant and Siri, but most smart speaker users are interacting with virtual women. 

At face value that may not sound like a problem – but society’s equating of women with voice assistants could have some worrying societal implications.

In May 2019, a groundbreaking report by UNESCO suggested that the default use of female-sounding voice assistants in our smart home gadgets and smartphones perpetuates sexist attitudes towards women.

The report, titled I'd Blush if I Could, takes its name from Siri's former default response to being called a ‘bitch’ by users – and criticizes the fact that Apple's Siri, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft's Cortana, are "exclusively female or female by default, both in name and in sound of voice".

Sympathetic and agreeable

So, why do voice assistants sound like women? Julia Kanouse, CEO of the Illinois Technology Association, explains that the companies behind these voice assistants based their choices on consumer feedback. 

She explains: “Research shows that women women’s voices tend to be better received by consumers, and that from an early age we prefer listening to female voices”. 

Indeed, in an interview with Business Insider, the head of Amazon’s Smart Home division, Daniel Rausch, explained that his team “carried out research and found that a woman’s voice is more sympathetic”. 

So far, so plausible – and as Kanouse concedes, the use of female-sounding voice assistants is clearly grounded in research.

However, the choices made by voice assistant creators could have far-reaching consequences for women at home, and in the workplace.

“The use of female voice assistants may reinforce the stereotype that we prefer to tell a woman what to do, rather than a man,” says Kanouse.

“Only recently have we started to see men move into what were traditionally viewed as female roles, and, conversely, see women fight to ensure these roles (such as flight attendants, nurses, paralegals, executive administrators) are seen as more than ‘just an assistant’.”

This progress could potentially be undone by the proliferation of female voice assistants, according to UNESCO. Its report claims that the default use of female-sounding voice assistants sends a signal to users that women are "obliging, docile and eager-to-please helpers, available at the touch of a button or with a blunt voice command like ‘hey’ or ‘OK’". 

It’s also worrying that these voice assistants have "no power of agency beyond what the commander asks of it" and respond to queries "regardless of [the user's] tone or hostility". These may be desirable traits in an AI voice assistant, but what if the way we talk to Alexa and Siri ends up influencing the way we talk to women in our everyday lives?

Researchers say the use of predominantly female voices in smart speakers can feed into subconscious biases

One of UNESCO’s main criticisms of companies like Amazon, Google, Apple and Microsoft is that the docile nature of our voice assistants has the unintended effect of reinforcing "commonly held gender biases that women are subservient and tolerant of poor treatment". 

This subservience is particularly worrying when these female-sounding voice assistants give "deflecting, lackluster or apologetic responses to verbal sexual harassment". 

While Kanouse doesn’t think this has led to overt cases of sexual discrimination, she does believe it creates “a level of unconscious bias”, adding that “the prevalence of female voice assistants may feed into subconscious biases against women in the workplace and home, making it more difficult for women to overcome these obstacles”. 

Should voice assistants be gender-neutral?

One solution could be to make voice assistants sound gender-neutral – and it's something that’s entirely possible, as demonstrated by the makers of Q, the world’s first gender-neutral voice assistant. 

Speaking to NPR, Julia Carpenter, an expert on human behavior and emerging technologies who worked on the project, explained that one of the team’s goals was to “contribute to a global conversation about gender, and about gender, technology, and ethics, and how to be inclusive for people that identify in all sorts of different ways”. 

To create the voice of Q, the team recorded “dozens of people”, including those who identify as male, female, transgender, and nonbinary, although in the end they chose just one voice, and pitch-altered it until it sounded neither male nor female.

The result, while perhaps a little more synthetic-sounding than Alexa or Siri, is a truly inclusive voice assistant for everyone – and the goal is to convince tech giants to adopt Q as a third option for their assistants.

Sadly, this isn’t likely – after all, brands like Apple, Google and Amazon are notoriously rigid when it comes to the design of their products, and we can’t see them agreeing to use the same voice as their rivals.

Diversity is key

So, instead of making voice assistants sound homogenous, could the answer lie in making them super-diverse?

This diversity doesn’t have to be focused on gender either; why can’t our voice assistants have regional accents? Why couldn’t they sound young or old, use slang, or pidgin-English?

The news that the BBC is working on a voice assistant called Beeb, which will understand all the diverse regional accents of the UK, has stoked hopes that it will also speak with some of these accents. 

Dr Matthew Aylett, Chief Scientific Officer at speech technology company Cereproc, thinks this could set Beeb apart from the other voice assistants on the market. 

“No other organization could boast of the resonance and importance of voice compared to the BBC,” he says, explaining that choosing a synthetic voice to represent the organization is “a big challenge”.

Discussing brands like Apple, Google, and Amazon he explains that, “in many cases decision-makers are choosing a default, neutral, well-spoken female voice without even considering that this is a major design decision”.

And the BBC could be in the perfect position to challenge this. With its encouragement of participation from its vast audience, Aylett believes that the use of a diverse voice for Beeb “could lead to some ground-breaking new perspectives on voice interaction”.

Aylett thinks the BBC could even call on this audience to select well-loved BBC presenters and create an amalgamated voice from the results – imagine how soothing a David Attenborough / Joanna Lumley hybrid could be.

However, Aylett doesn't think that global voice assistant developers will support third-party diversity from the likes of the BBC, or be “courageous enough to offer much diversity themselves”. 

Why? Well, the teams behind our most popular voice assistants just aren’t that diverse themselves. 

Women to the front

According to UNESCO, Alexa’s sexism problem is largely down to the lack of women in the room when tech companies are designing their voice assistants. 

This is an issue that affects the entire industry, with just 7% of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) patents generated by women across G20 countries; UNESCO says the overuse of female-sounding voice assistants is “a powerful illustration of gender biases coded into technology products, pervasive in the technology sector and apparent in digital skills education”. 

The solution? We need more women in the STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Maths) industries, and that, says UNESCO, requires “recruiting, retaining, and promoting women in the technology sector” – after all, how can our voice assistants effectively represent their users if a huge percentage of those users have no say in their development?

Whatever the answer is, it’s clear that we need more choice when it comes to the voices in our smart speakers. As Kanouse says, “whether it’s a male voice, or gender-neutral, or a mimicked recording of someone famous like Morgan Freeman for example, there are creative solutions that these companies could implement that would ensure we aren’t reinforcing gender stereotypes”. 

She adds: “Making that switch could be a very powerful statement from these influential companies”. 

“And wouldn’t it be fun to tell Morgan Freeman what to do every day?”

Not had enough Resident Evil this year? Then you're in luck. Capcom officially announced Project Resistance at Tokyo Game Show 2019.

Hot on the heels of Resident Evil 2 Remake - and scratching that horror itch while we wait for news on Resident Evil 8 - Project Resistance is a new 1v4 asymmetric online survival horror experience set in the world of Resident Evil. 

It may not be a new core game in the franchise, but Project Resistance is shaping up to be Capcom's version of survival horror's such as Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th. 

So without further ado, here's everything we know about Project Resistance including all the latest new, trailers and rumors.

Offline narrative mode
In an interview with PlayStation Blog, Project Resistance producer Masachika Kawata revealed that the game will feature an offline narrative mode alongside its 1v4 multiplayer mode.

More than one Mastermind
You'll have a choice of different Masterminds to play as, Kawata explained in the same interview:

“At TGS 2019, you only experience Daniel as Mastermind, but there are many variations of the Mastermind. The same goes for the survivors and there are more survivors with unique skills and looks that we are planning to add into the game.”

Closed beta test
Capcom has announced that a closed beta test for Project Resistance is coming soon to PS4 and Xbox One.  

Survival of the fittest
Much like Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th, Project Resistance sees a group of survivors working together to escape - each with their own unique traits and skills. To win, survivors need to obtain specific items to escape areas - they are succesful if they complete the third area in a level.

On the opposing side is a Mastermind, who secretly kidnaps young people "for the purpose of data gathering". 

Unlike other survival games though, the Mastermind will never come face-to-face with survivors, instead observing through the security cameras and setting traps to prevent their escape.

Resident Evil Project Resistance was officially announced during Tokyo Game show. Capcom's Project Resistance is a new 1v4 asymmetric online survival horror experience set in the world of Resident Evil.

Testing on an unconfirmed title
Capcom’s Division 1, has reportedly sent emails to Resident Evil Ambassadors in Japan, inviting them to test an in-development game. 

The email, translated from Japanese to English and published by fansite Biohaze, reads:

“To all Resident Evil Ambassadors, thank you for your patronage regarding the Resident Evil series. Today, we are letting you know that we are recruiting testers for a game that’s in development!

“We are interested in incorporating the feedback of all Ambassadors into our development, so please read the details below and, if you are interested in participating, click the entry button.”

We now know these emails may have been referring to Project Resistance. 

Capcom has numerous unannounced titles in development
Resident Evil fans hoping for a new entry in the series were feeling their hopes rising after a 2019 financial briefing from Capcom which confirmed the publisher has "numerous" unannounced titles in development. The games are being developed on the RE Engine used for Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 5.

The highlight of the ranges are clearly the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Galaxy Note 10 Plus, and they have a lot in common, as they’re both top-end phablets.

But they also have a lot of differences, so to help you choose between these two powerhouses, we’ve compared them across all the areas that matter.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus design

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus both have a curved screen, a metal frame and a glass back. The pair are equally rated for water and dust resistance, with an IP68 rating.

However, there are some key differences. For one, the Mate 30 Pro has a large notch above the screen, while the Galaxy Note 10 Plus opts for a punch-hole camera.

Around the back meanwhile the Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s cameras are arranged in a circular block at the top center, while the Note 10 Plus has its cameras in an oblong arrangement on the top left section. It's mostly up to your aesthetic preference, as neither arrangement noticeably affects the photography.

Perhaps the biggest design difference though is that in the Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s case you don’t have to get it with a glass back at all. The standard models come with a glass back in Classic Black, Space Silver, Cosmic Purple or Emerald Green, but you can also get a vegan leather version in Orange or Forest Green.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus meanwhile only has a glass option, with color choices of Aura Glow - in a mesmerizing rainbow gradient - and the simpler mono-color hues of Aura White, Aura Black or Aura Blue.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a 6.53-inch curved OLED screen, which curves at a steep 88-degree angle. There’s a resolution of 1176 x 2400, an aspect ratio of 18.4:9, a pixel density of around 409 pixels per inch, and support for HDR.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus meanwhile has a 6.8-inch 1440 x 3040 curved Dynamic AMOLED screen with an aspect ratio of 19:9, 498 pixels per inch and support for HDR10+.

So the Note 10 Plus has a larger display, making it a potentially better bet if you want a real phablet. It’s also higher resolution, but both phones have nearly unblemished all-screen fronts.

Cameras are one area where Huawei has really excelled lately, and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro looks to be no exception. It has a 40MP ultra-wide f/1.8 lens, a 40MP wide-angle f/1.6 lens, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto lens (with 3x optical zoom), and a 3D depth sensing lens. The wide and telephoto lenses also have optical image stabilization (OIS).

The Mate 30 Pro also puts a real focus on video recording, with the capability to record at an insane 7680fps in slow motion. That’s along with 4K time lapse, 4K HDR+ at 60fps, and more.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is no slouch when it comes to photography either. It too has four rear lenses, with a 12MP variable aperture main lens with OIS, a 12MP f/2.1 telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and OIS, a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, and a 3D depth sensor.

For video, you get 2160p at 60fps, HDR10+ support, and a number of other features, such as 'Live Focus Video', which blurs the background behind moving subjects.

As for front-facing cameras, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a 32MP f/2.0 one alongside a depth sensor, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus has a 10MP f/2.2 one.

We’ll let you know how good the Mate 30 Pro’s cameras actually are once we’ve put the phone through a full review, but on paper they certainly sound impressive. The Galaxy Note 10 Plus meanwhile has a setup that we described in our review as not the best but the most fun.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a Kirin 990 chipset, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus on the other hand has either a Snapdragon 855 chipset (in the US) or an Exynos 9825 one (elsewhere), paired with 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of storage.

So the Note 10 Plus has the RAM and storage edge, but chipset-wise the two should be similar, as those are all top-end processors.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus

The big difference here is in the software. While the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus runs Android 9, complete with full access to Google’s apps and services, the Mate 30 Pro uses Huawei software based on the open source version of Android 10, and has no access to the Google Play Store or any other Google apps and services. That’s a major mark against it and the single biggest issue it could face.

There are plenty of similarities in the features of these phones though. They both have an in-screen fingerprint scanner for example, and both support stylus input, though this is clearly more of a focus for Samsung.

You get a 4,500mAh battery in the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and a 4,300mAh one in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus. So not only is Huawei’s bigger, but remember it’s got a smaller screen to power.

Huawei promises 40W wired charging, 27W wireless charging, and the ability to use the Mate 30 Pro as a wireless charger for other devices.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus

The Galaxy Note 10 Plus has the same reverse wireless charging trick, and can charge at up to 45W, but its wireless charging is slower at 15W.

With all that in mind we’re cautiously optimistic about the Huawei Mate 30 Pro’s battery life. The Note 10 Plus meanwhile we found to have a battery that would last more than a day, which is good but not great.

Along with the software issues, availability is a major problem for the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, as there’s basically no chance that it will launch in the US. We’re currently unsure whether it will launch in the UK. though it is coming to Australia. Contrast that with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus, which is available virtually everywhere.

As for pricing, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro costs €1099 (around $1,200, £970, AU$1,700), though there’s also a Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G, which comes in at €1199 (roughly $1,300, £1,060, AU$1,900). In both cases you can only get it with 256GB of storage.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus on the other hand costs $1,099 / £999 / AU$1,699 for a 256GB model or $1,199 for a 512GB version, which is currently exclusive to the US. Or you can get the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G starting at $1,299 / £1,099 / AU$1,999. Pricing then for the two phones is very similar.

Takeaway

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro could prove a hard sell for a lot of people – both because it could prove hard to actually buy in many places, and because the lack of Google services will put many off. That aside, it looks to be a real flagship, with the sorts of specs and features that could make it a true rival for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus.

The Mate 30 Pro has a bigger battery, faster charging, similar core specs and a steeply curved screen, giving it a striking appearance, but the Note 10 Plus has a larger, sharper display, plus more RAM. Were it not for the software situation, Samsung might have a real fight on its hands.

5G, AI, robotics and future mobility to steal limelight at Gitex Technology Week

The 39th Gitex Technology Week, the largest ICT exhibition in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, will open doors to the future with 5G, artificial intelligence, robotics and future mobility.

More than 4,800 companies from more than 100 countries are expected to descend into Dubai for the five-day event taking place from October 6-10, 2019, at Dubai World Trade Centre, all encompassed under the movement of ‘Synergising the Mind and Technology Economy’.

Visitors can get hands-on with AI, 5G, smart homes and other emerging technologies such as AR and VR.

“5G is the major focus this year with a showcase of digital transformation and innovation expected across industry verticals like transportation, retail, healthcare, manufacturing, aviation and oil and gas,” Dr Ahmed Bin Ali, Group Senior Vice-President for communications at Etisalat, said.

At the event, Etisalat, du, Nokia, Samsung, Huawei and Ericsson will showcase 5G-powered solutions.

Leading AI expert and Gitex keynote speaker Dr Ben Goertzel, Chairman and Chief Scientist of Singularity Studio, and CEO and Founder of SingularityNET Foundation, will reveal how AI will merge with blockchain to create deep value for businesses and society, increase human life expectancy and support medical research.

Dr Goertzel is well-known in the technology world as the former chief scientist of Hanson Robotics, creator of social humanoid robot Sophia.

Strong momentum in 5G commercial adoption

Hani Sobih ELKukhun, Vice-President for Strategy at Huawei Middle East, said that 5G is gaining strong momentum in its commercial adoption.

Globally, Huawei has signed fifty 5G commercial contracts and shipping over 200,000 5G base stations worldwide. In the Middle East, ELKukhun said that they have signed eleven 5G commercial contracts in the Middle East.

“We have seen industries starting to embrace 5G, with it exploding into prominence by improving efficiency in many industries. By adding AI capabilities to the next generation of ICT products, AI also becomes more readily available for different fields of scientific research and business innovation. This combination will deliver more intelligence across every touchpoint of the digital economy,” he said.

Ericsson, having announced 24 global 5G contracts with major operators, including four in the Middle East, said that efforts to roll out 5G in the fastest, smoothest, and most efficient way are gradually paying off.

“I believe Gitex is a great forum to inspire consumers and enterprises with the unlimited opportunities that 5G will bring us,” Wojciech Bajda, Vice-President for Middle East and Africa, and Head of Gulf Council Countries at Ericsson, said.

New exhibitors

More than 100,000 tech experts from more than 140 countries are projected to take part.

New exhibitors taking part this year are Ericsson, Nokia, China Mobile, Tata Communications, Siemens, Mitsubishi Electronics, Honeywell, General Motors, Automation Anywhere, Samsung, Abu Dhabi Global Markets, Hub 71, Mohammed bin Rashid Innovation Fund, In5, NYAD, HADO, KISED, Chalhoub Group, Bird, AutoX and Energizer.

Apart from enterprises, more than 180 government entities, out of which 145 are from the UAE, are taking part.

Franco Atassi, Head of Smart Infrastructure at Siemens Middle East, said that they will showcase ways that intelligent infrastructure will be the foundation of the world’s future smart cities.

“We aim to demonstrate how the Internet of Things can have a positive impact on both the economy and society. Additionally, we’ll focus on how the industrial sector can benefit from embracing the digital transformation, using IoT technology to drive economic development through the intelligently digitalised industry,” he said.

Siemens will also show how they are working with Expo 2020 Dubai to create a blueprint for future smart cities, using its cloud-based platform for the Internet of Things – MindSphere.

Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice-President for events management at Dubai World Trade Centre, organisers of the event, said that Gitex continues to be the definitive platform where enterprises, startups and government entities come together, striving to engage the global technology community to harness the limitless ingenuity of humans and the power of technology to ensure meaningful benefits and impacts on society through intelligent discourse.

“Technologies, no matter how revolutionary they may be, offer no value to us unless they can create experiences to augment the well-being of individuals and the larger society,” she said.

Samsung is expected to showcase the smart home of the future and its advancements in 5G connectivity. Visitors will get the chance to get a first look at Samsung’s newest mobile devices including the Galaxy Note 10 5G and Galaxy Fold.

Gitex Future Stars

On the sidelines of the event, Gitex Future Stars will feature over 750 local and international startups and corporate accelerators from more than 80 countries, and more than 1,500 investors and corporate buyers, as well as an all-new presence from countries including Austria, Brazil and Italy.

The Government of Abu Dhabi is making its mark at the event, with the Emirate’s hottest innovation prospects, including Hub71, Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), StartAD, Krypto Labs, Department of Health Abu Dhabi, all aiming to put Abu Dhabi on the map as an innovation hub of the future.

LohMirmand said that General Motors and Rolls Royce will showcase the latest advances in IoT and 5G will reinvent the transport paradigm.

Google Chrome is in danger of becoming Windows – everyone uses it, but no one loves it

You may remember a few weeks ago I let out a howl of rage about how sick I was of Google Chrome using up so much RAM in my PC. While it was certainly cathartic to write out all my frustrations, the response to the article was illuminating. What struck me was how many readers contacted me who agreed, while sharing their own frustrations with Chrome.

Despite being used by (almost) everyone, no one really seems that fond of Chrome. A widely used piece of software that fails to be ‘popular’ despite its popularity – that sounds kind of familiar…

I suddenly realized that Chrome could be in danger of turning into Windows. And, that’s something that Google should be worried about.

People pleaser

There was a time when Windows was the most-used operating system in the world. However, despite it being installed on so many PCs around the world, there wasn’t the passion – the fandom – that you’d expect with such an ubiquitous bit of software.

OK, there may be a few Windows fans out there. I honestly once saw someone wear a Windows Vista t-shirt, and I don’t think they were a Microsoft employee. They might have run out of other clean clothes, though.

But there’s not the same fondness for Windows that other less successful operating systems have. Apple’s got no end of acolytes that will extoll the virtues of macOS. And, the community around Linux is one of the open source operating system’s best features.

Yet, somehow, users of Windows never seem to like it that much. And, while not every Windows release has been a success – I still get flashbacks to staring at Windows ME’s boot screen for what seemed like years at a time – some of them have been quite good.

And it’s not like Microsoft hasn’t tried to make us love Windows. Remember when Microsoft tried to drum up excitement for Windows 7 (a perfectly good entry) by encouraging all of us to host launch parties. I do. If you managed to forget (how I envy you) behold the classic slice of cringe below:

In a lot of ways, you’re just throwing a party with Windows 7 as an honored guest. Shudder.

Anyway, my point was that although Windows was used by millions, many people used it only because they had to. They didn’t use it because they wanted to. And that is a problem for Microsoft, as it means as soon as a decent alternative emerges, people will move on without a second thought.

Luckily for Microsoft, macOS and Linux haven’t stolen too many Windows users just yet. But the danger remains. And, something similar is happening to Chrome.

Unloved

Chrome is by far the most popular web browser on the planet right now. And, unlike Windows, it’s not forced on anyone (unless you use Chrome OS or Android). For a lot of people, they choose to install Chrome.

But I’ve increasingly heard about people complaining about Chrome. Meanwhile, less successful browsers, like Firefox, seem to have a lot more passionate fans.

There seem to be several reasons for this. The first is sheer scale. Because so many people use Chrome, of course there’s going to be more people complaining about it than with less popular browsers. And, the people who do have issues with it are likely the loudest (like me). People who just get on with it, and don’t have any issues, aren’t going to keep going on about it.

And, you could argue that so many of us complaining about Chrome, but still using it, is good for Google – and an indictment of its competitors. If Chrome really is that annoying, why aren’t we moving to other alternatives?

For some people, we stick with Chrome because it stores all our passwords, features our favorite extensions, ties in to all our Google accounts like Gmail, and is available on all our devices.

For other people, it’s laziness. We moan, but can’t be bothered to switch. For me, personally, it’s a mixture of both.

But, are we staying because we love Chrome? Because we like how it performs, or the ethos of the company behind it? I’m not so sure.

And, when a competitor does come along that does everything Chrome does but better – and without the annoyances – then Google might find its once dominant position under threat – as Microsoft did. Windows is no longer the most used operating system in the world. Android is.

Perhaps Microsoft could actually get its own back, if its Chromium-based Edge web browser becomes a success – and wins over Chrome users. Though, I wouldn’t hold my breath.

So, is there anything Google can do to get people to love Chrome? For a start, it could stop removing useful features. And, maybe take some time to understand why people use its browser, and why some people aren’t happy.

And failing that, maybe Google could take a leaf out of Microsoft’s book and try and get people to love its software through enforced – and totally not cheesy – fun!

If it leads to masterpieces like the videos on this page, I’d certainly be a little bit closer to loving Chrome.

Windows 10’s sweeping interface change Sets could be back on the horizon

Windows 10 users who were looking forward to Sets – and were disappointed when Microsoft abandoned the idea – can perhaps hope that this major interface change is still coming, at least according to the latest from the OS rumor mill.

Sets was (or indeed still is) Microsoft’s big idea to take the concept of tabs from web browsers and apply it to the broader operating system, allowing users to group together sets of apps in a window (all of which could be related to a certain task, and conveniently fired up together when needed).

As mentioned, Microsoft appeared to completely drop this idea earlier this year (after previously delaying it), but now prolific leaker WalkingCat has just hinted on Twitter that this might not be the case, and that Sets could be back on the horizon – albeit without providing much in the way of qualification or detail.

He mentions build 19481, which is a preview version of Windows 10 that’s way down the line and presumably being internally tested by Microsoft – remember the current preview for the next major update due in the first half of 2020 (20H1) is build 18985.

Italian tech site Aggiornamenti Lumia chimed in on that Twitter thread noting that build 19480 (and newer) are on the way to Windows testers, and that this will likely represent the start of (skip ahead) testing on Windows 10 21H1 – the big update due to land in the first half of 2021.

What about the Windows 10 20H2 update? The theory is that like the 19H2 update which should soon be with us, this will be about tweaking and smoothing things over, and fine-tuning performance, rather than introducing any major new features. Although that’s pure speculation, of course.

Sets for success?

The key thing here is that Sets is apparently due to make a comeback, with other commenters on that Twitter thread noting that there are further hints that Microsoft is again testing the feature, and that the company might have fixed whatever issues there were which stood in the way of Sets making the cut for Windows 10.

That’s great news as far as we’re concerned, because we felt this was one of the most intriguing incoming features for Windows 10, and potentially a huge step up for the interface in terms of usability.
