Apple : Leaks reveal Surface Pro 7 configurations ahead of Microsoft event

Apple : Leaks reveal Surface Pro 7 configurations ahead of Microsoft event

Leaks reveal Surface Pro 7 configurations ahead of Microsoft event

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 11:28 AM PDT

The Microsoft October 2 event is fast approaching. However, since Microsoft staying tight-lipped about what the event has in store for Windows fans, there’s no shortage of leaks and speculations surrounding what’s coming.

We here at TechRadar think that new Surface hardware is on the way, especially since at least two of these Surface devices are due for an upgrade. And, we’re not the only ones to think so.

WinFuture, seems to speculate that the next Surface Pro could possibly make an appearance as well, after coming across information regarding the upcoming Surface Pro 7’s configurations. German online publication shared five SKUs for the Surface device, and they are as follows:

  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7, Intel Core i3, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7, Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD
  • Microsoft Surface Pro 7, Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD

These configurations are apparently specifically available for the European market, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t also use them to hypothesize about which configurations are on hand for the US market.

Anticipate similar configurations for the US

Of course, this is all speculation. Whether or not these are accurate (or if Surface Pro 7 will actually rear its head this year), we’ll have to wait and see.

The configurations above show a base model with an Intel Core i3 chip coupled with 4GB memory and 128GB storage. This is surprising as the Surface Pro 6 in Germany currently starts with an Intel Core i5 and 8GB memory, as does the Surface Pro 6 in the US.

However, this could potentially be great news for budget-minded buyers who cannot afford the premium costs of tablets these days.

Considering that both Germany and the US share largely the same configurations for the Surface Pro 6 – with the exception of the 256GB model, which is doesn’t have the 16GB RAM coupling in Germany, it’s possible that this could be the case with the Surface Pro 7 as well. This means that potential US users may also have the Intel Core i3 + 4GB RAM available as the more affordable option.

The base model for the Surface Pro 6 was priced at $899 (£879, AU$1,145) when it came out. Assuming that Microsoft doesn’t considerably up the price on its Surface Pro 7 counterpart, we could be looking at a new base model that’s around $600 or less. This makes the next Surface Pro device more accessible than ever to a larger market.

Of course, this is all speculation. Whether or not these are accurate (or if Surface Pro 7 will actually rear its head this year), we’ll have to wait and see.

There's God and there are the Peaky Blinders. And of course, the gangster family has no trouble playing God, and enforcing their family's morals and laws upon others. Some of these actions occurred in episode 4 as the characters oversaw several gruesome attacks.

Episode 5 which is yet to air, is titled The Shock and it is certainly set to be a shocker - but don't worry if you're yet to catch up on the first four Peaky Blinders episodes (or, indeed, seasons 1 to 4) there won't be any spoilers here.

Much like its name suggests, the episode is set to have another tense twist with Mosley and Tommy working together in illicit money making schemes after the 1929 economic downfall. Throughout the episode we will hopefully find out how Linda Shelby is coping as well as witness Tommy visiting an old war friend. Sound good? Vikings vs Packers live stream: how to watch today's NFL football from anywhere

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 08:22 AM PDT

Week 2 of the 2019-2020 NFL season is upon us and this weekend we’ll get to see the Minnesota Vikings face off against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field stadium. This is the second year in a row that they’ve met on the field during week 2 and excitement is high on both sides as the two teams managed to win their first game of the season last week.

There’s no reason to miss out on one of the greatest rivalries in the NFC North and TechRadar is here to help you get a Packers vs Vikings live stream from just about anywhere in the world.

The Vikings went up against the Falcons last Sunday and won 28-12. The team dominated during the first three quarters during which time Dalvin Cook was able to score two touchdowns and Adam Thielen and Kirk Cousins both scored one touchdown each.

The Packers also won their respective match against the Chicago Bears but not by nearly as many points at 10-3. Under their new head coach Matt LaFleur, Jimmy Graham scored a touchdown during the second quarter while Mason Crosby kicked a 39-yard field goal during the fourth quarter.

Whether you’re a Vikings fan in Minnesota, a Packers fan in Green Bay or just want to tune in to see today’s game, we’ll show you how to live stream the Vikings vs Packers from anywhere in the world so you don’t miss a single touchdown.

But if you're somewhere else in the world - or if a coverage blackout is stopping you from watching in the US - then there's still a way you can live stream Vikings vs Packers online (and you don't even have to slum it with a grainy, illegal feed you've found on Reddit). Instead you could use a VPN - or Virtual Private Network - to change the IP address to one in a different state or country which does have a stream. And it's not even hard to do.

Can I watch with the NFL Game Pass?

Well it's a no and a yes. The NFL Game Pass in the US will only let you watch a replay of the game, but not the live action.

Interestingly, it's a different story with an International NFL Game Pass where all 256 regular season games are being shown absolutely live...shame you can't officially get access to that if you and your laptop's IP address is in the US.

Patriots vs Dolphins live stream: how to watch today's NFL football from anywhere

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 08:03 AM PDT

The 2019-2020 NFL season is already shaping up to be an exciting one and this weekend we’ll get to see the New England Patriots face off against the Miami Dolphins at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. You can catch all the action as the reigning NFL champions try to recreate last season’s magic and luckily TechRadar is here to help with all the info you need on getting a Patriots vs Dolphins live stream.

The Patriots opened this season with a 33-3 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Phillip Dorset scored a touchdown off a 58-yard pass from Tom Brady while Stephen Gostkowski managed to make several field goals during the game.

Meanwhile the Dolphins opened this season with a 59-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Jason Sanders kicked a 54 yard field goal while Preston Williams scored off a 6-yard pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Ravens have never been known as an offensive juggernaut but they were able to set numerous team records in last weekend’s game against the Dolphins.

The Patriots are the clear favorite to win in Sunday’s game but the team has only won one game during their last six visits to Miami and they even suffered a streak of two straight losses.

Whether you’re a Patriots fan in New England, a Dolphins fan in Miami or just want to tune in for all the action at the Hard Rock Stadium, we’ll show you exactly how to live stream the Patriots vs Dolphins this weekend so you don’t miss a single touchdown.

Can Nintendo Switch be a force for fitness – or are we all too lazy?

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Oh Nintendo, we appreciate you trying. The House of Mario has seen fit to unveil a brand new hardware accessory and video game for the Nintendo Switch, Ring Fit Adventure, continuing a long line of fitness-related games for Nintendo’s home consoles.

Much like the bestselling Wii Sports or Wii Fit games on previous console generations, Ring Fit Adventure uses motion controls and dedicated hardware to simulate something like exercise – though whether the experience really equates to a workout is arguable. Don't we all find ways of playing with as little effort as possible, even when the game is intended as a workout?

The Switch fitness game utilizes a ring-shaped controller that attaches to one of the Joy-Cons, meaning the gyroscope is able to tell in what direction you’re moving or shaking the ring. Made of a pliable plastic, you can bend and stretch the ring too, making it more flexible than the average Mario Kart steering wheel. There’s also a strap you tie to your leg, which houses the other Joy-Con and can tell whether or not you’re squatting, running, or otherwise while platforming or fighting monsters in the game.

In the trailer released this week, the Ring Fit Adventure shows off a number of family members cheering each other on as they reach the climax of their workout – some even breaking a sweat! But there's a disjunct between the slick image of happy exercising families (do families do this together?) and the way gamers play in real life.

Gaming the system

The issue with gamers is that, well, we can be lazy. Don’t get me wrong – the stereotype of gamers lying in their sweatpants all day without a moment of sunlight gets tired very quickly, and if Nintendo has shown us anything with the portable / home console hybrid Switch, it’s that gaming can be enjoyed anywhere these days, in all sorts of situations.

But gaming is also about winning, and completion – and if there’s a low-effort way to complete a level in a fitness game, or beat a friend at a game of Wii Tennis, you can be sure we’re going to do it.

When I first played Wii Sports back in the 00s, I was amazed at being able to recreate the swing of a racket in someone’s living room, but that soon descended into sitting down and just flicking my wrist to get the same result.

TechRadar’s Tom Bedford seconds this, commenting that “my family played Wii Sport Island Resort and Wii Fit, and really quickly learnt how to play the games while putting in the least effort possible, while still getting 100% function.”

He adds that genuine exercise, when you really are pushing yourself to the limit, is “the least efficient way to win in an exercise game.” By contrast, our Global Editor Gareth Beavis – a keen long distance runner – has fond memories of Sports Champions (on the PS Move) for the way it required real effort from the player:

“For me, I want a game that allows me to do better with more effort… I used to pull muscles playing the gladiator game on PS Move. You’d lose without [pushing yourself that far], but just the motion made you want to try harder.”

Real vs fantasy

The addition of the Leg-Strap is an interesting one, and may require more full-body engagement than some of us could get away with on Wii Sports and the like – possibly more in the vein of our editor’s experience in Sports Champions. But there will no doubt be those of us looking to game the system regardless, in which case, why did we bother buying an exercise game?

Like anything else, the outcome will largely depend on your own willpower and desire to use Ring Fit Adventure for its intended purpose. But we also play games in order to simulate experiences, rather than have them for real. I don’t particularly want to fight a dragon, or mow down waves of soldiers in real life, but the gameplay, storytelling, and general trappings of the title are what tempt me towards it.

Equally, there are local gyms I can go to for an intense ab workout, but if I’m staying in my living room, it’s probably to play a game first – with any exercise considerations coming second.

App code hints that Google might launch a Pixel 4a alongside the Pixel 4

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 06:30 AM PDT

Might we be seeing a Google Pixel 4a appear earlier than we thought? Right alongside the Pixel 4 at the same unveiling perhaps? That's what a codename found in the upcoming Google Camera app suggests.

9to5Google did some digging and found a reference to a "needlefish" device, alongside the "coral" and "flame" codenames that we think are linked to the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL phones.

This is mostly speculation at this point, but that "needlefish" name has popped up before alongside a reference to Qualcomm, suggesting that the device is some kind of Android gadget with a Snapdragon chip inside.

In fact these codenames have been floating around for months – it's just a question of working out what exactly they're referring to.

Count the Pixels

Bear in mind that the Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL were only launched in May, so it would be something of a surprise if Google was to unveil another mid-ranger just five months down the line.

However, as 9to5Google points out, there has been talk that the Pixel 3a phones were originally scheduled to arrive alongside the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL.

Perhaps Google wants to get into the routine of releasing high-end and mid-range phones at the same point in the year? It's something we've seen Apple and Samsung experimenting with in recent years.

At this stage we just don't know what Google is planning, but we'll bring you all the announcements from its next launch event, which is anticipated to be at some point near the middle of October.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max is another in a long line of confusing tech names

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 05:59 AM PDT

Hey tech industry, we need to sit down and have a talk. There are dozens of tech products that come out that can do genuinely amazing things, but the name is so obfuscated that a lot of everyday users have no idea what's going on.

Whether its the iPhone 11 Pro Max or Intel's confusing simultaneous launch of Ice Lake and Comet Lake Ultrabook processors, keeping up with the latest in tech is getting harder by the minute. Hell, it's literally my job to keep up with the latest in this industry, and I still get migraines whenever Intel puts out a processor with a name like "Intel Core i7-1068G7".

Product names in the tech industry are so messed up these days, in so many different ways, that I felt like it was time I got some complaints out of my system.

Surface Pro 2017

Microsoft took a step in the right direction with the Surface Pro 2017, I just wish it stuck with that naming scheme

So what's the problem?

The way I look at things, generally speaking, is that if you're selling things to the general consumer who may not have the time to keep up with jargon, its best to make things accessible. Enterprise users and enthusiasts will know what they're looking for, but they only make up a small part of the marketplace.

I know that I just pointed at the iPhone 11 Pro Max as an example of naming gone wrong, and I'll get to that one, don't worry. However, I actually think Apple serves as a pretty good example of how you should name yearly products - at least when you look at the Mac

When a new MacBook Pro comes out, we don't have to worry about some ridiculous name change. Instead it's just MacBook Pro (Mid-2019, 15-inch) - that's super easy to parse. If I want to pick up the latest MacBook Pro, I don't need to worry about looking through a thesaurus to figure out the right combination of words to type into Amazon, just pick up the latest year and I'm good to go.

Even the MacBook Air, which went through a pretty drastic transformation in October 2018, getting a thinner chassis and a Retina display, is just MacBook Air (Late 2018). I don't understand why something so simple is so rare in this industry.

It's something that I thought was going to be more common when the Surface Pro 2017 came out, dropping the '5' when following the Surface Pro 4. When Microsoft put the tablet out it said that it would put a number back on the Surface when the talented folks on the Surface design team made "meaningful changes" to the hardware

Honestly, I was pretty much OK with the Surface Pro 2017 being called that, but then Microsoft released the Surface Pro 6 in 2018 without any meaningful changes, demonstrating that none of that mattered anyways.

iPhone XS

Other than the camera, what's noticeably different than last year's iPhone XS?

The problem with the iPhone 11 Pro Max

So, the iPhone 11. There's no doubt in my mind that millions of people are going to run out to buy the new phone - I honestly probably will too. However, the iPhone 11 is basically an iPhone XS without an OLED display, a better camera and a slightly faster processor, as its actually a followup to the iPhone XR. If you want the updated version of the iPhone XS, you want the iPhone 11 Pro, or the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

You'd think that with those exaggerated product names, there would be enough different with the new iPhone to justify it.

And, sure, you get the faster processor that makes it an iterative update - where calling it the iPhone 2019 would suffice - but you also get a triple camera system, instead of the dual lenses on the iPhone XS and XS Max. Apple did show off some very professional-looking footage on stage, but it did exactly the same thing last year.

And therein lies the problem.

A name like the iPhone 11 Pro Max sounds like a truly revolutionary piece of technology, but it's being given to an iterative product. Does Apple think it's a sequel to the iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11, or does Apple think this is just another annual refresh? If it's the latter, the name 'iPhone 2019' would be a lot more accurate.

Dell XPS 13

The beautiful Dell XPS 13 2019 has Ice Lake processors, and they're U-series, not Y-series. Saved you a Google.

And, then there's Intel

It's not like Apple is the only offender, however. No matter how silly the names for the next iPhone might be, there's one company that comes to mind more than any other when talking about confusing names, and that's Intel.

Intel launched 10th-generation Ice Lake, the first part of its future-gazing Project Athena, at Computex 2019, built on its 10nm manufacturing node. It promises better power efficiency and performance, along with Thunderbolt 3 and Wi-Fi 6 compatibility by default. Generally speaking, it's a promising platform. But, then Intel followed it up by launching 10th-generation Comet Lake, based on yet another iteration of Skylake.

Having two lines of laptop processors out at the same time would generally be enough to be confusing, but Intel took things a step further when naming the individual chips. For instance, the top-end Intel Ice Lake chip right now is the Core i7-1068G7, while the top-end Intel Comet Lake processor is the Core i7-10710U.

So a bit of background: when it comes to Intel Core processors for laptops in the mainstream, they typically come in three flavors: U, Y and H-series. The U-series is for your traditional Ultrabooks, like the Dell XPS 13, Y-series chips are meant for thin and light fanless devices like the newest MacBook Air and the H-Series are meant for high-performance, high-wattage mobile devices like gaming laptops. That means that you can look at the Intel Core i7-10710U and understand that it's a mainstream chip that you can get some work done with.

With the Intel Core i7-1068G7, you'll have to pull out your phone in Best Buy to see whether the processor in that laptop you're looking at is a full-power chip or a lightweight fanless chip.

Buying a new laptop is already a confusing experience for a lot of people, and Intel launching a bunch of new laptop chips with confusing names isn't exactly the most consumer-friendly move Team Blue could make. Like it or not, the laptop market isn't exactly built for the kind of enthusiasts that obsess over the latest hardware launches like the desktop market is.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019)

Apple really doesn't get enough credit for not coming up with convoluted names for its laptops.

Be careful out there

At the end of the day, as tech companies keep launching products that are harder and harder to keep track of, it's going to be harder to make informed purchase decisions. And, because technology is getting more expensive - you'll have to drop $999 (£1,049, AU$1,749) for an iPhone 11 Pro with 64GB of storage - it's more important than ever to know what you're getting yourself into.

I really do wish tech companies would make it easier for people to parse what products are out there, and what exactly is different in new launches, but I honestly see things getting more confusing in the future.

So, before you buy that new laptop, or that new phone, do some research, read some reviews. Whether its here at TechRadar or at one of our many peers: we're only here to help.

The iPhone 11 Pro: Apple’s best video phone, but is only catching up to the competition

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 05:00 AM PDT

When Apple launched the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, its two new high-end smartphones that join the iPhone 11, it made sure to emphasise just how great they are for recording video.

Between the phones’ three cameras, new software options and improved processing power, the handsets are supposedly perfect for shooting content, from movies to your own little clips.

However, while Apple announced all its ‘new’ features with gusto and excitement, it seems the company doesn’t really understand how people use smartphone cameras, and when you look closely, it seems the handset isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

We’ll run through the iPhone 11 Pro camera capture features so you can understand just how it works, and how it compares to the competition.

Pure specs

The iPhone 11 Pro with its three cameras

In terms of pure specs, the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max have pretty decent video recording specs, so they’re not behind the competition in that regard.

The triple 12MP cameras, consisting of wide-angle, ultra-wide angle and telephoto lens snappers is similar to what you can see in phones from Samsung or Sony, and the video recording heights of 4K at 60 frames per second equals the best of the rest.

There are a few smartphones with similar specs, like the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus or Huawei P30 Pro, so the iPhone 11 Pro doesn’t trump the competition. But it doesn’t lose to it – not in this regard at least. However the iPhone specs aren't new or novel in the wider smartphone market.

Multi-camera capture

iPhone 11 Pro Max review

The iPhone 11 Pro Max

One of the main selling points of the iPhone 11 Pro video capture is the ability to switch between lenses while recording, without interrupting the video.

This means you could be recording something, then switch to the ultra-wide angle lens to show more of the background, then to the telephoto lens to see the subject in more detail, all without stopping the video.

As you can probably guess, this is far from a new feature in smartphones – in fact, most high-end and even mid-range handsets can switch between lenses while you’re recording videos. There’s sometimes a little stutter when doing this on devices with less processing power, but this is rare, and we don’t know this isn’t the case for the iPhone 11 Pro either.

Sure, the fact that the cameras will retain similar focus, exposure and color temperature when you change the zoom is useful, but this solves a problem that other smartphone cameras don’t have

Once again, Apple’s tech improvements are a case of it catching up to the competition.

On-board editing suite

FiIMiC Pro in use

Now we reach the one real advantage Apple has over the competition for video capture – well, for video in general, because it’s saving grace is the video editing suite that now comes on iPhones.

On stage during the iPhone 11 launch, it was mentioned that iOS 13 would bring an improvement to the Photos app that adds a range of video editing functions to the first-party app. This isn’t a simple crop or filter, like on an Android smartphone, but seemingly a professional-level built-in editing software.

That means you can edit exposure, cropping, color temperature, and audio levels all without having to download a third-party editing app for your iPhone.

This is a great addition for people who – understandably – find the overabundance of iPhone video editors a little confusing, and want a simple built-in option. Of course, this function is available to anyone who downloads iOS 13, not just iPhone 11 Pro users, but it’ll make it a lot easier to edit your 4K 60fps video.

Confusing FiLMiC with the camera

The Sony Xperia 1 with its Cinema Pro app

At the iPhone 11 launch, Apple went into a lot of detail about various functions of the iPhone camera, like recording through multiple lenses at once, including front and back camera – except these aren’t functions of the iPhone 11 Pro, but features of FiLMiC.

FiLMiC Pro is an app for iOS and Android, that mobile journalists and filmmakers use for video capture and editing. It’s a useful tool for people who use their smartphones to make videos, but it’s certainly not exclusive to Apple products.

Loads of commentators have conflated FiLMiC Pro’s cool new features with those of the iPhone, but in fact there’s no reason to believe the app’s new tools won’t be available on Android devices too. Given the fact many Android phones have better, and more, cameras than the iPhone 11 Pro, it could even be that non-iPhone handsets work the FiLMiC Pro app better than Apple’s new devices.

Some smartphones even have built-in recording apps with all the features FiLMiC Pro has – the Sony Xperia 1 Cinema Pro app lets you visualize your shots through its various lenses, with different color grades, exposures, and apertures. Plus, it actually films in 21:9, which is the aspect ratio most feature and short films use.

Apple’s samples

iPhone 11 Pro

The iPhone 11 Pro

Maybe you’ve read all the above, and think "maybe Apple’s not trying anything new, but the video samples look great," – well of course they do, they’re made with a professional team and all sorts of video kit.

The video sample is credited to not only a director but a cinematographer as well, and the various clips shown would require not only a dolly track but a filming crane too. The samples look professional-grade, but that’s because they’re literally made by professionals, with (presumably) a big budget.

When you’re filming your friends at a party, or a day out, you’re not going to be filming with a five-figure budget – it’s going to be you, holding the iPhone 11 Pro with your hands, and there’s no way it’ll look anywhere near as good as Apple’s video samples.

By using such professional ‘evidence’ of the iPhone 11 Pro’s video skills, Apple is suggesting to customers that they could make films of the same quality only on the handset, and that’s a far cry from the truth.

Sure, Apple made the iPhone 11 Pro video recording sound exciting and novel, but in reality it’s not doing anything you can’t do on any other mid-range or high-end smartphone already.

If you want a great phone for video recording, there are loads of more affordable options, like the Sony Xperia 1, Huawei P30 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S10, and each is comparitively affordable, some with more impressive specs too.

The iPhone 11 looks pretty green, but it's not the best choice for the environment

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 03:00 AM PDT

The new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro both look pretty green. Not only are they available in an attractive mint shade and a emerald hue respectively, Apple has also made an effort to point out their environmental credentials. But how 'green' are they really?

One of the first things Apple noted during its September 10 launch event was the phones' cases. These are available in various materials, including luxury titanium and ceramic, but the standard offering is 100% recycled aluminum.

That's a good start – using recycled materials also means less mining is necessary, and aluminum can be recycled an infinite number of times, so it can be processed and re-used once the phone reaches the end of its life. By contrast, plastic can be recycled around seven times, and paper around four before the fibers are too short to be structurally sound.

The chassis is only one part of the phone, though; there are also all the materials inside a phone to consider, including rare-earth metals, which are in huge demand and only available for mining in a few places worldwide.

Apple uses 100% recycled rare-earth metals in its Taptic engine, but this represents just a quarter of all the rare-earth metals in the entire phone. Still, it's refreshing that Apple admits this, and hopefully that percentage will increase in years to come.

And what about those metals at the end of the phone's life? The Royal Society of Chemistry estimates that there could be up to 40 million devices stockpiled in homes in the UK alone, containing rare-earth metals that could be put to better use.

Waste electronics

However, if there are no facilities within a reasonable distance for recycling your old phone, the best tactic may actually be to hold onto it until such a service becomes available. Throwing it in the general garbage means that not only are its components trapped and unusable, they will remain so forever. If you stockpile your old handsets, at least there's a chance that they will be recyclable at some point in the future.

Re-use, recycle

During the iPhone 11 launch, Apple was also keen to promote its trade-in scheme, which allows owners of existing iPhones to trade them in for a discount on a new model. The older phones will then be either 'given a new lease of life' through refurbishment, or recycled.

For devices that can't be restored, Apple has created a machine called Daisy specifically for disassembling old iPhones for recycling. The robot is capable of disassembling 2000 phones per hour and extracting materials that can be recycled, including cobalt, which is then re-used in new phone batteries.

By providing an incentive for users to recycle their old devices, Apple is helping to keep phones out of landfill, and reduce the need to mine more materials

So how does Apple compare to other phone makers? To be honest, it's hard to say – there are so many different components involved in different quantities, and companies pick and choose which parts of their processes are reported, so it's all but impossible to make a direct comparison.

Samsung, for example, doesn't offer so much information about recycling, but does report that it's running a scheme where old phones are re-purposed into internet of things devices (seemingly for school children). Its sustainability report is less transparent than Apple's though, and covers the company's entire output rather than individual devices.

Keep it going

Thankfully, Apple has a good history of supporting its older products, continuing to offer software updates many years after their initial release, so you won't need to upgrade too often.

You'll have to be careful with it, though. Apple offers extensive repair services through its AppleCare insurance, but if your phone isn't easily fixed then the company will simply ship you a brand new device, even before you've returned the wrecked one. Great for you, but not so fantastic as far as waste electronics go.

iPhones are tough to repair yourself. If you're looking for something that's easy to fix at home, the Fairphone 3 is well worth a look. Its modular design and complete lack of any glued components means you can disassemble it and replace and faulty parts with only minimal experience of electronics.

Fairphone 3

Fairphone also goes to great lengths to ensure the materials in its phones are sustainably and ethically sourced, tracking the supply chain as far as possible. Like Apple, it also has a recycling program that offers a cash incentive for turning in not just old Fairphones, but any phone from any manufacturer.

The bottom line

Apple certainly seems to be doing well on the environmental front, but investing in a new iPhone 11 probably isn't the greenest choice – and neither is the Fairphone 3. Take a look at your current handset. Sure, it might not have three cameras or Dolby Atmos sound, but has it actually reached the end of its useful life?

As is often the case, the most environmentally friendly option is also the most boring: forego the shiny new devices presented on September 10 (no matter how green), and keep using your existing phone for as long as possible.

Spain vs Argentina live stream: how to watch Basketball World Cup 2019 Final online from anywhere

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 02:57 AM PDT

After two weeks of superb hoop-shooting action, the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup is finally upon us, with Spain taking on Argentina in the grand final. You can watch the match as it happens from anywhere by following our Spain vs Argentina live stream guide below.

Argentina eased past France 80-66 on Friday to advance while Spain battled to a 95-88 win over Australia to put them them once step away from being crowned world champions.

Today's showdown will bring to an end a long wait for big stage glory for one of the teams. It’s been seven years since Spain’s men’s basketball team last played for a global title (the 2012 London Olympic Games). For Argentina, it was 15 years ago in this very tournament. While Spain won their last appearance in a World Cup Final back in 2006, you have to go back to the inaugural event back in 1950 for Argentina's last taste of sweet gold medal success.

Argentina have confounded expectations throughout the tournament, revelling in their underdog status to see off the likes of Russia and Serbia during their unbeaten journey to today's final. Their dominate semi-final win over France saw another masterclass from ageless Shanghai Sharks veteran Luis Scola, with the 39-year-old notching up 28 points and 13 rebounds, earning him a “M-V-P” chant from his teammates in the dressing room following the match.

Argentina will need a similar showing from Scola today if they're to beat Spain. The South Americans once again go into today's game as the less-fancied team, but who would want to bet against them on the run that they're on?

Ranked number 2 in the world, unlike Argentina, Spain has a host of players familiar to watchers of the NBA. Phoenix Suns star Ricky Rubio and Toronto Raptors centre Marc Gasol have been their best players, with Gasol the star of the show in Spain's double overtime semi-final win over Australia,  scoring 33 points on 11-of-19 shooting in 39 minutes.

Who will win today's showdown? You can follow our guide below to getting a Spain vs Argentina 2019 Basketball World Cup Final live stream from pretty much anywhere you happen to be.

Amazon could soon make it much easier to leave an online rating

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 02:30 AM PDT

If you never get around to leaving ratings for the stuff you've bought online, Amazon has an idea for you: star ratings that can be left in a single tap on your phone.

The speedy review system is being tested at the moment with a select group of users, TechCrunch reports, and might eventually get rolled out to the wider community of online Amazon shoppers.

A robust review system helps users, sellers, and Amazon itself of course, so it's perhaps no surprise that Amazon is looking at ways to make it more straightforward for people to leave their feedback.

With the new approach, you can put up a star rating without having to fill out the extra  fields, like a review title and a full written review, like you do at the moment.

Ratings war

What's more, the option to leave ratings is going to be available from more places on the Amazon website, and in the Amazon app – it's going to be easier than ever to register your thoughts on a product.

The system will still allow you to leave a more detailed review, if you want to, so the lengthy reviews (complete with anecdotes and illustrative pictures) aren't going away anytime soon.

Amazon will be hoping to give the reviews on its items a boost in terms of both volume and authenticity, but as yet there's no word on if or when the feature is going to become a permanent fixture on the website and in the Amazon app.

"We are testing a feature that allows customers to leave feedback easily while also helping shoppers get authentic customer ratings on products from a broader set of shoppers," an Amazon spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Solheim Cup 2019 live stream: how to watch Europe vs USA singles golf online from anywhere

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 01:34 AM PDT

The 2019 Solheim Cup literally couldn't be any closer going in to today's singles match-ups. It's all set up to be an unmissable finale to the bi-annual battle between the best female golfers from Europe and the USA and we'll tell you how to live stream the Solheim Cup 2019 no matter where you are, with our guide below.

Europe is looking to win back the trophy this year from the USA on home turf. Taking place at Gleneagles in Scotland, Europe went into this year's tournaments favorites despite having lost the last two instalments of the competition.

Catriona Matthew has the honor of leading the European side into action as Captain in her native Scotland for the three-day matchplay tournament. Her side actually looks like the stronger of the two, with 31 Solheim Cup appearances among them and striking a nice balance of experience with emerging talent with three rookies in Anne Van Dam, Celine Boutier and Bronte Law.  Elsewhere, wildcard Suzann Pettersen makes her ninth appearance after returning from having a baby.

Juli Inkster, meanwhile, will return for her third stint as non-playing captain of the US side. The American's will have to raise themselves however, following the blow of losing former World No.1 Stacy Lewis to a back injury earlier this week. Ally McDonald has stepped, and while she may be a Solheim Cup rookie, she should be a more than capable replacement.

Feeling pumped for a big Sunday  of matchplay golf and transatlantic tensions? Us too! Keep reading to discover where you can watch a Solheim Cup live stream - it doesn't even matter where in the world you are.

If you're at home and have cable, then NBC is the official broadcaster once again for the Solheim Cup.

The network will be splitting coverage between its main sports channels and specialist station, the Golf Channel, which is available from most cable providers, with NBC  promising 30 hours of coverage over the course of the tournament.

Decided to cut the cable? Well several top TV streaming services are all providing an alternative. Each one offers a free trial to get you started and has masses of other content and channels for you to enjoy if you subscribe:

  • Hulu with Live TV $40 per month - Hulu with Live TV includes CBS, Fox, NBC and ESPN.

Basketball World Cup 2019 live stream: how to watch FIBA final online from anywhere

Posted: 15 Sep 2019 12:12 AM PDT

The 18th edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup was blown wide open after the USA were defeated by France in the round of eight. But that now feels like a distant memory as Spain and Argentina prepare to battle it out for the trophy and the title. And you're in the right place to discover how to get a Basketball World Cup live stream from your corner of the Earth.

The 2019 edition is taking place in China across eight different venues. While usually held every four years, there's been a bit of a longer wait for Basketball fans this time out, with the tournament delayed by a year, meaning it now falls out of sync with the FIFA World Cup for the first time. There's also a new expanded format, with 32 teams now taking part, up from the previous 24.

Two-time defending champions USA went into the tournament as clear favorites, but they suffered a shock (yet comprehensive) defeat at the hands of France. Having qualified for the 2010 Olympics, they'll be expecting much more success there with the likes of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, Paul George and Anthony Davis all likely to throw their hats into the ring.

And to be fair, the chasing pack this time out has looked stronger than ever. Spain were tipped by many at the start to be genuine contenders and have safely made it through to final. While Argentina took out France in the other semi-final on Friday.

Beyond the tournament itself there's more at stake - the  FIBA World Cup will this year act as qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, with seven of the twelve spots up for grabs (the top two finishers from both Europe and the Americas, along with the top one from each of Africa, Asia and Oceania).

If you want to know where you'll be able to watch all the action - it's ESPN+ if you're in the US - we'll tell you exactly where you can catch it online with our 2019 Basketball World Cup live stream guide below.

How to watch the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 from outside your country

Below we have a full rundown of your viewing options for the 2019 Basketball World Cup in different countries - check out how to watch in the US (where ESPN+ will be streaming the tournament in its entirety), the UK, Canada and Australia.

The problems start when you try to watch your domestic coverage online while out of the country. Give it a go and you'll quickly find your stream in geo-blocked.

That's super annoying, but not unavoidable. We've found that using a Virtual Private Network - or VPN - to be a handy solution. You select a server in your home country and then watch as if you were sat back at home on your couch.

Next-gen autonomous cloud capabilities to steal limelight at Oracle OpenWorld

Posted: 14 Sep 2019 08:30 PM PDT

More than 60,000 attendees and over 250 exhibitors and speakers from more than 90 countries are expected to take part in the Oracle OpenWorld 2019 event.

The four-day event, with over 2,200 educational sessions, will take place from September 16 to 19, at Moscone Centre in San Francisco, California, US.

This year, Oracle is bringing a more human-centred focus to its products and solutions with a focus on digital transformation, led by demos and hands-on labs.

The main absence from the event will be its co-Chief Executive Mark Hurd, who is taking a leave of absence from the company for health reasons, and his duties will be shared by co-CEO Safra Catz and Oracle co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Larry Ellison.

The year looks better for the cloud industry due to the global economic instability as organisations are moving to the cloud to cut costs and improve operational efficiency by using artificial intelligence and cognitive technologies.

According to research firm Gartner, worldwide IT spending is forecast to reach $3.74 trillion in 2019, an increase of 0.6% from 2018 while the enterprise software market will experience the strongest growth in 2019, reaching $457 billion, up 9% from $419 billion in 2018 and another 10.9% in 2020 to total $507 billion.

The worldwide public cloud services market is projected to grow 17.5% in 2019 to total $214.3 billion, up from $182.4b in 2018,

While SaaS represents a $95 billion market in 2019 compared to $80b in 2018, the biggest out of the cloud spending, it will grow to $143.7b in 2022.

Autonomy gains traction

Oracle's cloud-related success mostly lies with SaaS [software as a service] applications, so Oracle, a services company rather than a product company, will focus on IaaS [infrastructure as a service] and next-generation autonomous cloud database at the event.

An autonomous database is a cloud database that eliminates complexity, human error and manual management associated with database tuning, security, backups and updates; tasks traditionally performed by the database administrators (DBAs).

According to research firm International Data Corporation’s Public Cloud Services Tracker in April, Oracle gained the most market share globally out of all enterprise applications SaaS vendors for three years in a row.

In fiscal 2018, the company’s revenue from applications totalled $11 billion and its co-CEO Hurd said that it could be doubled to $22 billion by migrating its existing on-premises business to SaaS platform.

With a focus on autonomous database, Oracle will unveil updates to Oracle Database 19c, which runs both on-premises and in the cloud and reveal more details about its partnership with Microsoft in a bid to improve interoperability between Azure and Oracle's IaaS, known as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

"Autonomy is the defining attribute of a Generation 2 Cloud," said Ellison.

"The autonomous database is the most successful new product in Oracle's history. We added more than 500 new autonomous database cloud customers in the first quarter and expect to more than double that in the second quarter. We now have over 2,000 customers, paying customers, for the autonomous database."

Next growth phase

The US software giant, with decades of database software and technologies and having a strong penetration in the enterprise space, is gearing up for the next growth phase in cloud services.

“Oracle’s response to autonomous is a critical element for dealing with enterprise-wide security as it gives a greater level of agility for organisations to differentiate and optimise their business, well beyond the competition,” Richard Smith, senior vice-president, UKII, ECEMEA and South Clusters for Technology at Oracle.

Oracle’s competitors offer the ability to automate scaling and backups but what Oracle is offering is intelligent and self-managing database by eliminating human administrative access with the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning in a bid to bring a high degree of automation to routine administrative tasks.

Oracle offers two types of autonomous databases - Autonomous Data Warehouse (ADW) and Autonomous Transaction Processing (ATP).

“Autonomous Data Warehouse is a capability that we are seeing now in the cloud. ATP, which will be launched soon, will allow customers to deal with autonomous capabilities and also deploy in a very scalable environment to allow customers to scale up or down, with their computing requirements around transaction processing,” he said.

Based on deep machine learning and artificial intelligence, he said that autonomous capabilities are built on every component of the portfolio.

“Data is the new battleground but businesses are struggling to keep up with tight IT budgets and the volume of data growing exponentially”, Smith said and added that Oracle is built on data applications portfolio more than four decades ago.

According to KuppingerCole, Oracle has been named as this year’s overall leader in database and big data security.

Fury vs Wallin live stream: how to watch tonight's boxing online from anywhere

Posted: 14 Sep 2019 06:28 PM PDT

So, are you rrrrrrready to rrrrrrumble. We're willing to bet that Tyson Fury is, as he prepares to put his undefeated streak on the line against Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin today. The showdown is all set for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and you can live stream Fury vs Wallin as it happens - and no matter where you are - by following this guide.

The Gypsy King is back in the ring with his career back on track. You don't need us to tell you that his unorthodox boxing style and showmanship means that any Fury fight is going to be just about unmissable.

It's been just three months since the Gypsy King's last fight on US soil, following his impressive, quick-fire win over Tom Schwarz back in June.

Fury will ultimately see today's showdown with Otto Wallin as another stepping stone towards a much wanted rematch against Deontay Wilder following his controversial split-decision defeat against the WBC World Champion back in December. The 31-year-old English fighter has his own WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title on the line against Wallin, but will be rightly expecting a quick dispatch of his Swedish opponent.

For his part, Wallin will be looking to become the first Swedish world champion since 1959. With an equally unblemished record of 13 knockouts in a 20-fight career, the 31-year-old will be hoping to overcome a five inch height difference and limited top-rank fighting experience to pull off a shock that would rival Andy Ruiz’s win over Anthony Joshua earlier in the year.

You can live stream Tyson Fury vs Otto Wallin anywhere in the world using the guide below - check out your options for a fight you won't want to miss. The cost varies quite a lot over the world, with the UK hosting an expensive PPV that's undercut massively in the US by ESPN+.

Live stream Tyson Fury vs Otto Wallin from outside your country

If you've been looking forward to this fight and already know where to watch, your plans may be scuppered if you're away from your home country now. That's because broadcasters geo-block their coverage if you try to watch from abroad.

But there's a clever workaround for this, which is perfectly legal (assuming the broadcaster's Ts&Cs allow it) and it involves using a piece of software called a VPN - better that than trying to get some dodgy stream from Reddit.

At the time of writing, we can't see any evidence that the Tyson Fury vs Otto Wallin fight will be shown at all. As a last resort, we suppose you could try downloading a VPN service and then signing up for an option from another country. We'll be sure to update this section if we hear anything differently.
