| Some WhatsApp mobile users get access to Messenger Rooms for 50-way video calls Posted: 16 May 2020 08:00 AM PDT Facebook has been busy trying to get a slice of the Zoom video calling pie with the launch of Messenger Rooms, a video conferencing tool with support for up to 50 participants. As promised, links to Rooms are now appearing in WhatsApp. As spotted by WABetaInfo, the beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and WhatsApp for iOS now feature shortcuts to Messenger Rooms, so users can jump straight from one app to the other. For now though, the links are only appearing for certain users in certain countries. Even if you switch to the beta version of WhatsApp, you won't necessarily see the newly added Messenger Rooms functionality.
When Messenger Rooms first appeared, Facebook did say it would be integrated into Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and the Portal video caller, and it seems to be wasting no time as far as WhatsApp is concerned. One messaging platform to rule them allA few days ago we saw Messenger Rooms integration arrive for WhatsApp on the web, so the foundations are obviously in place for a full roll out. If early testing goes well, this should be available to all WhatsApp users before too long. Messenger Rooms does everything you would expect a competent video calling application to do. Participants can join in even without a Facebook account, and there's the all-important support for virtual backgrounds too. With many of us stuck at home more regularly, WhatsApp itself is getting improved video calling features as well – support for 8-way video chats was just added – while competitors like Google are upgrading their own video tools. Last year Facebook said that it wanted to unify messaging across all of its apps – Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – though we haven't heard too much about that since. | Disney Plus needs more musicals, and Hamilton could be just the beginning Posted: 16 May 2020 08:00 AM PDT Disney Plus is already a home for many a musical, and whether you’re more into the animated sing-a-long films of Hercules and Mulan, or the spin-off High School Musical series, there are plenty of tune-filled shows and films to keep any Disney Plus subscriber occupied. Things are changing, though, with the arrival of Hamilton, which is confirmed to be landing on the service this July 3 – far ahead of its originally planned theatrical release date in October 2021. The award-winning musical – penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also took the starring role in its original Broadway production – took audiences and critics by storm with its mash-up hip-hop opera, which explores the politically turbulent life of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers. Its arrival on Disney Plus will be welcome to those of us who haven’t managed to see the show in person – a huge number, given the limited number of seats per performance and increasingly high price of tickets. If you don’t live in or near London or New York, too, your only real option is to listen to the soundtrack (which still holds up magnificently by itself). But Hamilton coming to Disney Plus also opens the door to the many Disney stage musicals showing on Broadway and on London’s West End coming to the TV streaming service. Here’s why. A whole new worldDisney has been a sizeable force in the world of Broadway and West End musicals for years now, including massive hit shows like The Lion King and Aladdin, to others like Tarzan or the Little Mermaid that have toured numerous countries without necessarily ending up at a massive London or Broadway theater. There’s even a stage musical for Mary Poppins! 2020 is not business as usual, though. With lockdown measures keeping cinemas, theaters, bars, and entertainment venues shut for the foreseeable future, more and more of us are looking to TV streaming services to scratch our content fix. Disney Plus didn’t exactly need that driver, with millions of subscribers signing up in its first few days in the US, Canada and Australia, and more coming in the months afterwards as it spread to the UK and rest of Europe. But the fact remains that live performances have been put on pause, and platforms like Disney Plus offer a way to compensate for that. With animated and live-action Aladdin movies on Disney Plus, why not the stage production too? Disney has also played around with streams for musical performances, including its Disney on Broadway 25th Anniversary concert, which was filmed in late 2019 (remember 2019?) and streamed in April 2020 to raise money for victims of Covid-19. Of course, many of Disney’s stage musicals have been shut for weeks amid lockdown measures, and so any performances yet to be filmed in full for streaming for Disney Plus are unlikely to have the opportunity in the coming weeks. London’s West End is also due to be shut until June 28, if not later, while Broadway is expected to be closed until at least September (via The New York Times). On Disney Plus you’ll also find a filmed performance of the Broadway musical Newsies – alongside the 1992 film version starring a rather young Christian Bale. We’d be surprised, though, if Disney didn’t have some form of video recordings for many of its other musicals – or a plan to get them – especially with its involvement in Hamilton showing an interest in bringing stage musicals to screen. Theater videographer Bartek Podkowa (Seven Hills Film) told us that Disney would likely go ahead with “Frozen, The Lion King and Aladdin–- assuming they have pre-existing recordings. Filming new shows on the scale they're dealing with would be incredibly difficult in the immediate future, so I would expect them to start with what they already have available.” “I hope that streamed musicals could reach audiences that might not normally consider giving a staged musical a shot, and convince them to start seeing live shows once theaters reopen,” added Podkowa – while acknowledging that “polished, high-budget” streams from Disney could squeeze out the streaming attempts of smaller theaters and venues during the extended closure. One jump aheadRoom for one more? A way to binge the biggest Disney musicals in their stage form, and watch them back-to-back with the original animated films that spawned them, would be a massive addition to the Disney Plus catalogue – which, as it stands, still suffers from a lack of variety outside of its tentpole Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and Disney channels. Why not a dedicated tab for ‘Disney Plus Live’? There are also plenty of other stage musicals that attract thousands of paying audience members every month – and if Disney was able to get the streaming rights to a number of them, its streaming service could become a home for stage musicals, current and past, for those unable or see them in person. Imagine seeing Matilda, Dear Evan Hansen, and Wicked next to The Last Jedi and Black Panther, or even Book of Mormon (though we don’t expect Disney bringing that to its largely family-friendly service). We’ve seen similar measures by the UK’s National Theatre, which has expanded its usual NT Live programme into a weekly broadcast of past productions, with a strategy of limited streaming availability as to not end up replacing live performances altogether. For now, we’ll be satisfied with Hamilton – but if Disney doesn’t have a roadmap for its stage musicals coming to Disney Plus too, it should probably start planning one.

| Nvidia (with AMD's help) has unleashed the most powerful AI system ever Posted: 16 May 2020 07:55 AM PDT Nvidia has unveiled the third generation of the world's most advanced AI system with the launch of its new Nvidia DGX A100. The DGX A100 can deliver five petaflops of AI performance as it consolidates the power and capabilities of an entire data center into a single platform for the first time. The system is available now and the first order has already shipped out to the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory which will use its AI and computing power to better understand and fight against Covid-19. In a press release, founder and CEO of Nvidia, Jensen Huang explained how the DGX A100 will help advance the development of AI, saying:
“NVIDIA DGX A100 is the ultimate instrument for advancing AI. NVIDIA DGX is the first AI system built for the end-to-end machine learning workflow — from data analytics to training to inference. And with the giant performance leap of the new DGX, machine learning engineers can stay ahead of the exponentially growing size of AI models and data.” Nvidia powered by... AMD!Nvidia's DGX A100 systems integrate eight of the company's new A100 Tensor Core GPUs for a total of 320GB of memory that can be used to train even the largest AI datasets. The system also features the latest high-speed Nvidia Mellanox HDR 200Gbps interconnects; the press release however misses an important ingredient from their archrival AMD. Tucked inside the DGX A100 is two 64-core AMD Epyc processors that, Nvidia says, provides 3.2X more cores. The previous generation used Intel Xeon and the adoption of the Epyc CPU by AMD's fiercest rival is a clear indication of the performance and feature gap between Intel and AMD. When working with smaller workloads, the DGX A100 can be partitioned into as many as 56 instances per system by using the A100's multi-instance GPU feature. This enables enterprise to optimize computing power and resources on demand in order to accelerate a variety of diverse workloads, including data analytics, training and inference, all on a single, fully integrated, software defined platform. The University of Florida even plans to deploy DGX A100 systems to infuse AI across its entire curriculum with the aim of fostering an AI-enabled workforce. Nvidia's new AI system is available now through its partner network of resellers worldwide starting at $199,000 (£164,412). The company's storage technology providers, including DDN Storage, Dell, IBM, NetApp, Pure Storage and Vast, also plan to integrate the DGX A100 into their offerings.

| Ford Mustang Mach-E release date, price, news and features Posted: 16 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the first fully electric car from the American auto maker, and while it bears the famous stallion brand, it's not exactly what you'd imagine a Mustang to be. Instead of a two-door muscle car, which Mustangs have bee ever since their introduction in 1964, the Mustang Mach-E is actually a five-door, mid-size SUV ready to take on the likes of the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-Tron, Kia e-Niro and upcoming Tesla Model Y. Add into the mix the fact the iconic V8 power has also been swapped out in favor of greener, silent electricity and you may begin to wonder if Ford has forgotten what the Mustang is all about. However, you still get the classic Mustang shape – albeit jacked up – and the famous pong is still prancing across the front of the Mach-E. What's more, you can pre-order the Ford Mustang Mach-E now, if it takes your fancy. If you're still on the fence, here's everything we know about the Mustang Mach-E so far.
Ford Mustang Mach-E release date and priceThe Ford Mustang Mach-E release date is slated for late 2020, so we expect the first electric cars to roll off productions lines sometime between September and December. It's available for pre-order on the Ford website, if you fancy staking a claim early. The Ford Mustang Mach-E price starts at $43,895 / £40,350 (around AU$68,000). In the US there are four base models; Select, Premium (from $50,600), California RT.1 Edition ($52,400) and GT ($60,500), but the Select and Premium configurations have sub-model options too. The Select Mustang Mach-E is available at the starting price as RWD (rear wheel drive), but you can also get it in AWD (all wheel drive) - which bumps the price to $46,595, improves its 0-62mph time, but decreases the estimated range from 230 to 210 miles. Meanwhile, the Premium model offers a host of additional features over the Select - including larger wheels, a handsfree tailgate, panoramic glass roof, heated wheel and front seats, and more. It also arrives in four battery and powertrain options. There the standard range RWD (offering 230 miles) and AWD (210 miles) models, which are joined by a pair of extended range options. The extended range RWD offers up to 300 miles on a single charge, while you can expect around 270 miles from the AWD powertrain.
In the UK, things are much simpler. There are four models in total – two RWD and two AWD – to choose from. There was a fifth option, but the limited First Edition model has already 'sold out'. The entry-level £40,350 Mustang Mach-E price gets you the base RWD model which boasts a range of 280 miles. If you opt for the extended range model - which aims to deliver 370 miles on a single charge - the Mustang Mach-E starting price rises to £49,980. For those looking for enhanced performance, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is also available with an AWD powertrain in the UK. You will need to pay for the additional drive, but the extra cost also bags you bigger, 19-inch wheels, adaptive LED Mustang signature headlights, red brake calipers and more. The standard range AWD Ford Mustang Mach-E price starts at £46,650, with the extended range model bumping that up to £57,030. Ford will also bring the GT version of the Mustang Mach-E to the UK in 2021, and claims it will have a 0-60mph time of under five seconds – however it's yet to reveal how much it will cost, or any of the other specs.
Ford Mustang Mach-E designThe Mach-E retains the Mustang light blocks and pony badge As we've mentioned, the Ford Mustang Mach-E isn't exactly your standard Mustang with the fact that it's a SUV rather than a two-door sports car. However, Ford has kept a number of styling points from its iconic vehicle and brought them to its first fully electric car including Mustang front and rear light blocks, the bulbous hood, sleek roof profile, wide wheel arches and the pony badge on the front grille. You'll notice that the Mustang Mach-E doesn't have door handles, helping Ford create that sleek aesthetic. So, how do you get in? There are touch-sensitive buttons on the B pillar (the pillar between the front and rear windows) which, when pressed, will pop the doors open for you. As you approach the car, the buttons illuminate, showing you where to touch, and the Mustang Mach-E will also be able to automatically lock itself when you exit and walk away from the vehicle. Look ma, no handles! When it comes to storage, the Mustang Mach-E has plenty of space, with a 29cu ft / 402L trunk. Fold the rear seats down and that expands to 59.6cu ft / 1,420L. Plus, as there's no combustion engine in this electric car, you also get a 4.8cu ft / 100L front trunk. Ford Mustang Mach-E range and chargingAs for the Ford Mustang Mach-E range, it really depends on the model you purchase. If you opt for an extended range Mach-E, you could be looking at over 300 miles from a single charge, but even if your budget can't stretch that far, Ford has also built in fast charging. The extended range Mustang Mach-E electric cars support 150kW DC charging, which can equate to between 47 and 57 miles of range in just 10 minutes - provided you're hooked up to a compatible fast charger. This would also take you from 10% to 80% in 45 minutes, and just 38 minutes for the smaller battery capacity in the standard range models. It means a suitable top-up can be achieved at a rest-stop with a compatible fast charger. Of course, you'll also be able to charge up your Ford Mustang Mach-E at home by plugging it in to a standard wall socket (Ford includes the required charging cable with the car), although top-up times will be much slower - about 8 miles of range per hour. However, you can get a faster charger or higher voltage socket installed at home, which can improve the recharge time to around 22-32 miles of range per hour. 10% to 80% in just 38 minutes is possible with a fast charger Ford Mustang Mach-E in-car technologyInside the Ford Mustang Mach-E you'll find a huge 15.5-inch touch screen between the front two seats, providing infotainment and car controls. It has a physical dial built into it towards its base, which allows for easier, tactile control over various settings and reduces the amount of time required staring at the screen rather than the road. The display runs on a new version of the Ford Sync interface, and also comes with voice control. Ford's also included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the Mustang Mach-E, allowing you to mirror you phone's core apps on the car's screen. That means you'll get access to apps including Apple Maps, Apple Music, Waze, Google Maps, Spotify, Messages, WhatsApp and more. There's a huge 15.2-inch main display in the Mustang Mach-E That's not the only digital display on offer though, as Ford has also squeezed a 10.2-inch display into the cluster behind the steering wheel. There are USB ports too, ensuring driver and their passengers can plug in and top-up their devices when on the move. Vital when it comes to keeping the kids occupied in the back - because remember, this isn't a traditional Mustang with a couple of seats crammed in the rear as an afterthought, this is a full 5-seater SUV. Ford Mustang Mach-E smart driving aidsFord is packing in a range of driving aids which are becoming common place is many new cars these days. It includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go. This will see the Mustang Mach-E accelerate (up to your preset max speed and decelerator with the car in front. It will be able to bring you to a complete stop in traffic, and set off again - all without you having to touch the accelerator pedal. There are four cameras situated around the Mustang Mach-E which can provide you with a clear view of your whole surroundings - which will likely be especially useful when it comes to maneuvering in tight spaces and parking. If parking is a problem the Ford Mustang Mach-E also comes with Intelligent Active Park Assist, which can automatically park you in a perpendicular or parallel space. While the features at launch are certainly welcome, Ford is promising future improvements, updates and new features for the car via wireless, over-the-air updates. It's already confirmed that it expects to push its first update to the Mach-E within six months of it rolling off the production line, and future updates could include performance improvements, updates to the infotainment system and brand new features not currently available. What's more, the Mustang Mach-E will be able to update itself while parked outside your house over Wi-Fi or cellular, and some installations may take less than two minutes and won't interrupt your use of car.

| Social distancing: how tech can stop you getting too close to comfort Posted: 16 May 2020 07:00 AM PDT Lockdowns might be starting to ease, but it looks like social distancing is going to be with us for a lot longer – and it's not easy. Thankfully, technology can help, and not always in the most obvious ways. Some companies are already developing apps and devices to make it easier to steer clear of other people (whether you're at work or in public), but there are also lots of tools already available that you can use to keep yourself and others safe. Working outIf you’re used to getting together with a gym buddy, tennis partner or running club, working out solo just isn't the same – but there are other options. Zwift has recently made some improvements to its Meetup feature, which lets you arrange a virtual run with your real-life friends. You can set a time and invite up to 100 people to join a bimble around one of the app’s virtual worlds: Innsbruck, London, New York, Richmond, Yorkshire or Watopia. Each runner will have an avatar within the app, and will be able to chat and interact while pounding the treadmill at home. In addition to a treadmill, all runners will need a Zwift RunPod (a small cadence sensor that attaches to your shoe) and the Zwift app. This works best on a tablet – in our experience, it’s a little fiddly on a phone, especially when you’re running and it’s hard to keep your hand steady to tap the screen. Some sports lend themselves more readily to social distancing. It’s possible to play golf while social distancing, for example, and many courses are still open for business, but it’s not a straightforward business. You’ll need to disinfect your clubs, avoid using carts (they’re hard to clean thoroughly), keep out of locker rooms, and not touch any flags. If that’s too much hassle, or you’d rather not take the risk, Golf Club VR is well worth a look. It’s adapted from the original Golf Club simulator, and with an HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Valve Index VR headset, is surprisingly immersive. Some dedicated golfers have even got experimental with their VR controllers and adapted them using actual golf club shafts. Tennis is less suited to VR, but you could use your time in isolation to work on your skills. What better way to celebrate the end of lockdown than reuniting with your friends and absolutely thrashing them at tennis? Tennis ball launchers have been around for years, but high quality ones (meant for training rather than for playing with your dog) are usually cumbersome, heavy and difficult to manage alone. The Slinger Bag is an alternative that can be set up by one person in a few minutes. It can hold and fire 72 balls, and is styled like a lightweight wheeled suitcase so you can easily trundle it to the court without anyone to help. There’s a telescopic tube for picking up the balls when you’re done. ShoppingWhen it’s time to stock up on provisions, placing a grocery order online is perhaps the easiest option, but only if you can secure a delivery slot. If you need to head out to the store yourself, one of the easiest ways to avoid getting too close for comfort is to take a quick look at Google’s ‘popular times’ graph (accessible through Google Search or Maps) to see when it’s likely to be quiet. Most of the data used to create these graphs will have been gathered before lockdown started, so they won’t necessarily be entirely accurate, but they should still give you a good idea of when the queues are likely to be shortest. At workWorking from home is the most straightforward way to keep your distance from others, but there are lots of situations where that’s just not possible. Safe Spacer is a wearable designed for workplaces where you’re going to be moving around, dodging colleagues and visitors. If you’re about to get too close for comfort, the device will alert you with a flashing light, vibration or audio alarm. It can also log any accidental contacts between people, though no data apart from the device ID and proximity is stored. It can be worn as a watch, on a lanyard or kept in a pocket, and because it’s waterproof, it can be easily disinfected at the end of the day. Safe Spacer will be available to buy later this year for $99.99 (about £80 / AU$150) each, with discounts for organizations buying a batch. One for small business owners to consider. In the parkSafe Spacer is a great idea for workplaces, but only works if everyone is wearing one. If you’d like to talk a walk (and local rules permit it) while keeping your distance from others, Strava offers an unusual helping hand. Strava Global Heatmap shows the streets that are most popular with the app’s users (the busier, the hotter) so by plotting a route that avoids these, you’re less likely to wind up weaving around people. As with Google's charts, the map uses data gathered over the course of several months, so doesn't necessarily reflect the way things are now, but should still give you a good guide as to the busiest and quietest streets. Of course, there may be reasons why some of these routes are less traveled (lack of proper surfacing, for example) so it would be wise to check the lay of the land using Google Street View before heading out if you’re not familiar with the area. It can be easy to forget about distancing when you’re enjoying some fresh air though, which is why officials in Singapore have chosen to put Boston Dynamics’ four-legged robot Spot to use patrolling parks. The robot (currently being trialled) is controlled remotely by an operator who checks how close people are standing, and plays pre-recorded messages reminding people not to get too cozy. It’s a neat idea, but being monitored by a robot is rather unnerving – and not too effective when the sheer novelty prompts people to gather together and take photos. A robot strutting around a park is far more interesting than anything else you're likely to see while self-isolating.

| Intel Core i5-10600K vs AMD Ryzen 5 3600: the mid-range CPU rumble continues Posted: 16 May 2020 06:00 AM PDT With the official launch of Intel's 10th-generation Comet Lake-S processors, the Intel Core i5 10600K vs AMD Ryzen 5 3600 debate was inevitable. While the best processors from Intel are still considered the gold standard for the industry, AMD is slowly increasing its market share at Intel's expense – and in some ways even surpassing them. In the mid-range processor class, it's undeniable that the Ryzen 5 3600 isn't as "fast" as the competing Intel Core i5-9600K in terms of clock speed. But with hyper-threading technology, higher IPC (instructions per clock) performance and a lower price point, the Ryzen 5 has become a popular choice among non-OEM and budget-conscious consumers. With the release of the Intel Core i5-10600K, however, has Intel successfully reasserted its decades-long computing dominance, or does the Ryzen 5 continue to hold its own against the industry behemoth latest offering? Price and availabilityIntel Core i5-10600K launch price is set at $262 (around £230, AU$400), which is pretty much in line with the pricing for Intel's previous generation Core i5 chips. The Ryzen 5 3600, meanwhile, costs significantly less with a starting price of $160 (around £150, AU$245). Now that the Comet Lake-S has officially launched, Intel's 9th generation Core i5 processors may see a price drop that put them more in line with AMD's offering, though the Core i5-9600K still comes in around $200/£245/AU$308. Even with that price drop though, the six-core, six-thread 9600K still comes up short against the six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 3600. How does the Ryzen 5 3600 compare to Intel's latest offering though? SpecificationsThe biggest change for the Core i5 10600K over its predecessor is hyperthreading. The 10600K is a six-core, 12-thread processor with a listed base clock speed of up to 4.1GHz, boostable to a maximum single-core turbo frequency of 4.8GHz. It comes unlocked, so it can be overclocked, and includes an integrated Intel UHD 630 GPU. Its Thermal Design Power (TDP) comes in at 125W, 30Ws higher than its predecessor. It supports 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes, up to 128GB of dual-channel, non-ECC DDR4-2933 RAM, and has an L3 cache size of 12MB. The AMD Ryzen 5 3600, meanwhile, also has 6 cores and 12 threads, but with a lower base clock speed of 3.6GHz. Its max turbo speed is 4.2GHz. It can also be overclocked but does not come with an integrated GPU. Its TDP is much lower than the Intel Core i5-10600K's, coming in at 65W, supports 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes, and up to 128GB of dual-channel ECC DDR4-3200 RAM. The Intel Core i5-10600K requires the latest Intel LGA 1200 chipset, however, so if you're using an Intel Core i5-9600K and you're looking to upgrade to the 10600K, you'll need to purchase a brand new motherboard to go along with it. The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 uses the same AM4 socket as its predecessor, some it squeezes the last bit of useful life out of the older boards. PerformanceWe haven't been able to test or benchmark the latest Intel chips, which means we have to go off what Intel has reported for the Core i7 and i9 processors in terms of performance. According to Intel, the desktop Comet Lake processors will provide up to 33% higher frames per second (FPS) while playing Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord over its predecessor, with up to 10% higher FPS in Player Unknown: Battlegrounds and 13% higher FPS in Monster Hunter World. How well this translates to the Core i5 is impossible to discern, so these figures need to be taken with a grain of salt until we've had a chance to test the Core i5-10600K ourselves. If these numbers are at least in the same ballpark for the 10600K, then we can expect an improvement over the 9600K, even if it's a modest one. So how does that stack up against the Ryzen 5 3600? Considering that it is a very popular CPU for gamers, gaming performance is going to be a crucial battleground for the two chipmakers.
Intel Core i5 10600K vs AMD Ryzen 5 3600: which is going to be the gaming CPU champion?The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 was able to match the gaming performance of Intel's 9th generation Core i5 chips at a significantly lower price point, so how likely is it that Intel's latest mid-range Comet Lake processor can bring gamers back to the Intel fold? It is tough to say without benchmarking the chip ourselves, but there are several major hurdles that are cutting against Intel in this fight. While the Core i5-10600K features 4K-capable integrated graphics, expecting high-performance gaming out of an integrated GPU is a fool's errand. Most gaming consumers are going to be looking to utilize a more powerful discrete GPU for their rigs, so one of Intel's major advantages over the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is someone moot. What's more, the Ryzen 5 3600 matched the Core i9 9900K's performance nearly frame-for-frame so the 10% to 33% FPS improvements that Intel is promising for Comet Lake processors, while important, are likely to be tinkering on the margins when the Ryzen 5 3600 is already pumping out nearly 120 FPS on Middle Earth: Shadow of War and 101 FPS on Warhammer: Total War II. Assuming that the Intel Core i5 10600K performs as well as the Intel Core i9, is the difference between 100 FPS and 120 FPS worth the extra investment required to jump to the Intel 10600K? Don't forget, you'll need to buy a whole new LGA 1200 motherboard as well. On the high end, these kinds of performance differences might make sense, but for a gamer on a budget, those extra 20 FPS look awfully expensive, especially when your game already looks amazing - and that's assuming Intel can deliver that kind of performance bump at the Core i5 level, which still isn't certain. At this point, it still looks very much like the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 will remain the preferred CPU for mid-range gaming rigs, so Intel has some work to do to reassert its once monolithic position. | OnePlus 8T: what we want to see Posted: 16 May 2020 06:00 AM PDT The OnePlus 8T is the next smartphone we're expecting from OnePlus, following the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, which were released in April. We haven't heard that much about the 8T phones – there's also likely to be an 8T Pro – yet, but we're expecting the leaks and rumors to start coming very soon. Until recently OnePlus was known for releasing 'flagship-killer' phones that rivaled top-end handsets in everything but price. Since the OnePlus 7 phones, however, handsets from the company are now looking increasingly premium in terms of price, as well as specs. The 'T' range of OnePlus phones tend to be incremental upgrades on that year's non-T handsets, adding in more recent tech but not exactly re-inventing the brand. We'd expect that to be the case with the OnePlus 8T phones, with OnePlus tweaking and improving the OnePlus 8 devices without overhauling them. We say 'we'd expect' since, as mentioned, we haven't heard much about the phones at all just yet. Before the inevitable cascade of leaks and news begins, we've come up with a list of what we're hoping to see in the 8T phones. Cut to the chase
OnePlus 8T release date and price
OnePlus 8 Pro We haven't heard any official or even rumored pricing or release information for the OnePlus 8T yet, but that doesn't mean we know nothing, as we can look at past releases to predict when the new phone/phones will launch, and what they'll cost. The OnePlus 7T phones were announced in September 2019, but the OnePlus 6T was launched in November 2018, so we can't be sure about a launch month, but it seems the release will be towards the end of this year. That's quite a wide potential release window, and given that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected smartphone and other tech supply chains, we could see the OnePlus 8T announced right at the end of that window. It's also worth pointing out that OnePlus has always asserted the 'T' model is never guaranteed, but it's been consistently released so far. In terms of price, that's another question mark, but we'd expect it to launch at the same price as, or just a little more than, the OnePlus 8. That phone cost $699 / £599 (roughly AU$1,100) for its most affordable version, and the OnePlus 8 Pro started at $899 / £799 (around AU$1,500), so we could see the OnePlus 8T Pro arrive at around that price. We don't know if the OnePlus 8T will come to Australia, as the OnePlus 8 hasn't at the time of writing, but the company has said it plans to release the OnePlus 8 there at some stage, and it has released phones in Australia in the past. OnePlus 8T news, rumors and leaksThe key thing we don't know about the OnePlus 8T at this point is what chipset it will have. While the OnePlus 7T used the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, a slightly better version of the Snapdragon 855 that the OnePlus 7 used, rumors suggest there will be no Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset – therefore the OnePlus 8T might use the same Snapdragon 865 that's in the OnePlus 8 models. That's a rumor that affects the whole phones industry, not just OnePlus phones, but the 8T series are perhaps the most high-profile upcoming phones affected. OnePlus 8T: what we want to seeHere's our wish-list for improvements we want the OnePlus 8T to make over this year's non-T devices, and other phones in general, based on the current OnePlus devices and the phones the 8T series will be competing with. OnePlus 7 An affordable variantThe OnePlus 7 was arguably the last truly 'affordable' OnePlus phone, and price creep in the last few years has resulted in the phones coming closer to flagships from the likes of Apple and Samsung in terms of cost. That means OnePlus fans who don't want to break the bank have been left out in the cold a bit. We'd like to see OnePlus launch a phone that costs a lot less than its current models, but without sacrificing too much in terms of specs and features. It's been rumored for a while that the company actually is doing just that, and the OnePlus Z, which could also be called the OnePlus 8 Lite, is the rumored handset that will address this pricing issue. Could it actually be a OnePlus 8T Lite instead? OnePlus 8 A telephoto lensThe OnePlus 8 had a glaring absence in its camera department, in the lack of a telephoto lens – in fact, the non-Pro OnePlus phones consistently miss out on the zoom-photography tech. OnePlus appears to think that people prefer ultra-wide and macro lenses to telephoto, but we'd disagree. The ability to take a good picture from far away, or choose your own framing without having to physically move, can be as useful as those other options, and arguable more so. If OnePlus wants to seriously compete with its close rival Oppo (which puts out rather similar phones, and is owned by the same parent company) it's going to have to contend with Oppo's camera tech. Oppo puts out arguably superior camera phones, thanks in part to its bespoke zoom technology (the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom was literally named after this tech), and in order to compete, OnePlus needs to take its phones' camera specs seriously. Wireless charging in all modelsOne of the surprise features of the OnePlus 8 Pro was wireless charging – the company had previously foregone this feature, and the OnePlus 8 Pro was its first phone to come with it. The OnePlus 8 didn't though, and we'd argue that as wireless charging pads find there way into more and more homes, it's about time that non-Pro OnePlus phones got the tech too. If OnePlus still wanted to preserve some distinction between the 'basic' and Pro phones, it could have the latter support faster wireless charging, but we'd still like to see some wireless capability in the OnePlus 8T. OnePlus 7T Pro A pop-up camera in the ProThe OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro both housed their front-facing cameras in pop-up modules that were hidden away when you weren't using them – this ensured the phones had unbroken, full-body screens, and gave the devices a novelty factor too. This feature was ditched for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, however, with both phones have 'punch-hole' cutouts in the screen instead. This change is understandable – pop-up mechanisms take up a lot of internal space, and are more prone to breaking than non-moving parts, but pop-ups are also pretty cool, and allow the screen to remain unbroken by cut-outs. We'd love the OnePlus 8T Pro to bring the pop-up back, and give us back that that full-screen experience – even if it meant making the phone a little heavier or thicker.
120Hz refresh rates all aroundThe OnePlus 8 Pro had a screen with a 120Hz maximum refresh rate, twice that of the 'standard' 60Hz typically found on phones. Higher refresh rates mean a smoother experience when navigating menus, and many flagships in 2020 use the tech. The OnePlus 8 didn't have a 120Hz screen though, instead packing the same 90Hz that the OnePlus 7T phones and OnePlus 7 Pro had. This isn't the end of the world, but given that screen refresh rate is one of the key differentiating factors between smartphones in 2020, we'd like to see the tech on both devices to keep the OnePlus 8T phones competitive. OnePlus was one of the first companies to introduce faster screen refresh rates in early 2019, and it'd be great if the company was the first to make an affordable phone with 120Hz too, to show that it's still got some of those 'flagship-killer' instincts.
