iMovie and GarageBand for iPad announced Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:47 PM PST Apple has announced that there will be new editions of iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad and iPad 2. Both apps were shown off at the iPad 2 event in San Francisco, where Steve Jobs noted that these apps, alongside others Apple is creating, "set the bar high for developers". The new iMovie for iPad app includes precision editing tools, multi-track audio recording, new themes, AirPlay to Apple TV, and the ability share your videos in HD. There's over 50 sound effects available on the new iMovie, as well as new sharing options to YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and more video-upload sites. It will be available from 11 March for the princely sum of $4.99 (likely around £4.39). Instru-mental GarageBand also gets an iPad makeover, with touch instruments, guitar amps and effects, 8 track recording and mixing, 250+ loops, the ability to email an AAC file of your songs and it is also compatible with the Mac version. The touch instruments (like some other apps you can get) turn the iPad into a musical instrument, which is pretty neat, and you can also play with the tone of the music by touching heavier or lighter on the screen. "This is no toy," explained Steve Jobs about GarageBand for the iPad, and who are we to argue? Again, this app will be out alongside the iOS 4.3 UK release date, which is 11 March. |
Exclusive: O2 confirms it won't be offering iPad 2 Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:16 PM PST O2 has confirmed to TechRadar that it will not be selling the Apple iPad 2, but will still offer competitive data bundles for the tablet. The iPad 2 was today announced by Apple, offering nine times more graphical power than its predecessor as well as a 33 per cent thinner chassis, front and rear cameras and the revelation that it also comes in white. In a statement, O2 explained its reasons for not selling the iPad 2, saying: "We continue to offer great value, flexible data tariffs for iPad 2 and the unique ability to manage these tariffs on the device itself." Great value It continued: "Although we will not be selling iPad 2 with subsidy, O2 microsims with our great value iPad tariffs are still available for customers who have purchased the device elsewhere. "In addition to our award winning mobile broadband service, customers also benefit from unlimited Wi-Fi at thousands of The Cloud and BT Openzone hotspots" TechRadar also contacted Vodafone about whether or not it was intending to sell the iPad 2, with which they replied: "No comment". So far, the neworks confirmed to stock the iPad 2 are Orange and T-Mobile. The iPad 2 UK release date is 25 March, with pricing to be the same as the original iPad. |
Posted: 02 Mar 2011 11:27 AM PST The Apple iPad 2 is here. After all the build up, the speculation, the pondering, more speculation, the fan-boy flaming and the speculation, Steve Jobs took the stage today in San Francisco to unveil its second-generation iPad. To get you in the mood before the iPad 2 is officially in the shops, below are some of the official pics, alongside some specs peppered here and there for good measure. The new iPad is also 33 per cent thinner, with the 8.4mm frame even sleeker than the iPhone 4, and is down to 1.3 pounds (590g) in weight, which is around 15 per cent lighter than the first version. You can buy a Smart Case for the iPad 2, which has magnets inside that wake the tablet and also put it to sleep. The new iPad has Photobooth, alongside iMovie and an all-new GarageBand. There's a front and rear camera and the iPad 2 can also do FaceTime. The iPad 2 UK release date is 25 March and is priced from £499. |
Apple iPad 2 accessories revealed Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:53 AM PST Apple has outlined all the new accessories you can get for its brand-new iPad 2, including a HDMI out lead and some apparently smart cases. Apple has always launched premium accessories alongside its premium products and this year is of no exception. The standout is the HDMI mirrored video output lead. With this you can unsurprisingly output up to 1080p content from your iPad and it works with all apps, supports rotation, needs no setup or configuration and will charge your iPad while using it. The price is a hefty $39, but this is Apple so there is bound to be a little bit of magic inside that warrants the price tag. Cover me bad Another accessory is something called Smart Covers. These are covers for your iPad that are smarter than your average case. Nope, this doesn't mean they can get at least one University Challenge question right, but they are made from *magic* magnets that grasp and auto-align to fit the iPad nice and snug. Like a loving parent, they automatically wake the iPad when you open the case and put it to sleep when you close it. You can remove the iPad within a second and they have a got a microfiber cloth that cleans the screen. They also act as a stand and come in leather and poly. Price wise, you are looking at $69 for leather and $39 for plain, old poly. The Apple iPad 2 release date is 23 March, with prices the same as the old iPad. |
Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:36 AM PST Apple has unveiled iOS 4.3 at its iPad 2 event in San Francisco - a new operating system for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new OS features enhancements to AirPlay where applications or websites will be able to activate the feature to stream to Apple TV. Another much sought-after enhancement has been added in, with Apple finally allowing your iPhone 4 to act as a Wi-Fi hotspot to pump your 3G signal around. Photo Booth your Face (time) The new version of the iOS platform also features Photo Booth and FaceTime for the iPad 2 as well. The former will allow you to manipulate images in the same way as on the Mac, with Apple pointing out that the new iPad 2 is so powerful it can manage 9 video streams at once. The Facetime update doesn't add a huge amount, basically adding the iPad 2 into the list of products that can support Apple's video calling service (on top of the iPhone 4, iPod Touch and more recently, Macs). iOS 4.3 will be a free download on March 11, iPhone 4 and 3GS as well as the last two generations of iPod Touch. |
Updated: Apple iPad 2 officially unveiled Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:18 AM PST The iPad 2 has officially been announced by Apple - with the next-generation tablet sporting a whole host of improvements. Steve Jobs surprised the world by taking to the stage to announce the new device, showing off a sleeker, lighter and more powerful device. The new iPad is dual core, front and rear facing cameras (the latter able to shoot in HD video), an all new A5 dual core CPU and nine times more powerful GPU. The new iPad is also 33% thinner, with the 8.4mm frame even sleeker than the iPhone 4, and is down to 1.3 pounds (590g) in weight, which is around 15% lighter than the first version. Holding price and battery life What's more, Apple is promising to keep the same 10 hour battery life, as well as maintaining the same UK price when it launches. At the launch, Steve Jobs said: "With all this new technology onboard, surely something's gotta give. But we're managed to maintain our legendary iPad battery life, giving 10 hours of battery. "A lot of [our other tablet competitors] are coming out with substantially lower battery life, but the iPad 2 has been tried and tested and every reviewer has confirmed the 10 hour life.' The new iPad 2 will be shipping with iOS 4.3, which adds preferences over what to do with the side-mounted rocker switch, be it locking the orientation or put the device on mute (in the same way as the iPhone). Oh, and the REALLY good news: from day one it will be coming in both black and white. Praise be! |
Apple brings out the big numbers for iPad 2 launch Posted: 02 Mar 2011 10:17 AM PST After much speculation about his health, Steve Jobs took the stage at the iPad 2 launch today to announce some big numbers from the company. There was much self-congratulatory back slapping about the iPad and the iPhone and some interesting dissing of rivals, including Samsung and its Galaxy Tab and a poke at Android 3.0, saying that there are just 100 apps available for this OS (which isn't strictly true). Among the adulation were some interesting numbers from Apple, that show just how popular its products have become. These include:
Oh, and we reckon Steve Jobs also used the word magical at least three times. And the amount of new iPads announced: one. |

iPad 2 set for massive sales, suggests TechRadar poll Posted: 01 Mar 2011 11:54 PM PST TechRadar has been running a poll for the last four days asking if you were likely to be buying an iPad 2 - and with the launch just hours away the results are hugely positive for Apple. More than a thousand votes in just a few days have been cast, and, as you would expect with any device, the majority of you are fairly clear that this isn't your cup of tea. In fact, at the time of writing, 53 per cent of the votes answered the question of 'Will you be buying an iPad 2?' with the answer 'No no no'.
One in five But, impressively, a whopping 19 per cent stated that they WOULD be buying an iPad 2 and a further 23 per cent suggested that they might if the device reviewed well. The fact that nearly half of those that voted would even consider forking out hundreds of pounds for the latest tech from Cupertino is a massive testament to just how influential Apple technology has been in the past decade. The original iPad has proven to be a massive hit for Apple, and the follow up will bring improvements that will no doubt add to the brand's popularity. Alternative tablets to the iPad have also become huge business, with manufacturers like Samsung, BlackBerry-maker RIM and HTC all hoping to wrest market share back from Apple. But, If the poll is representative of the true interest in the iPad, then it could prove to be a massive year for Apple. |
