Lomachenko's reputation as a legend still operating in the boxing ring will only grow further should he add a third world lightweight title to his collection at the O2 tonight.

Widely regarded as the world's best boxer, the 31-year-old Ukrainian won a world title in his third professional fight, became a two-weight champion in his seventh and a three-weight world champion by the time of his twelfth - all this on top of his fearsome amateur record of 396 wins to one loss.

Lomachenko's last outing in the ring saw him retain his unified lightweight world title in a dominating display against Anthony Crolla in April. Tonight brings another British challenger and a pop at the vacant WBC title, but former Olympic champion Luke Campbell should bring a greater challenge this time out.

Campbell, (20-2, 16 KOs), 31, may have lost his only previous title fight two years ago against Jorge Linares for the WBA title, but he lost on a contentious split points decision and has shown plenty evidence he's ready for another stab at the top level.

How to live stream college football this weekend on ESPN+ and from anywhere

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 11:30 AM PDT

The summer sun is starting to wane, the leaves have a tinge of brown. Fall is upon us and that means only one thing - a new football season! While you'll have to wait a few more days for the NFL, the NCAA season is now underway and there's a flurry of intriguing games taking place this weekend. We'll tell you how to live stream college football today and, in particular, on ESPN+.

So what games are here to get the football juices flowing? The trio of match-ups all kick off with Syracuse at Liberty in Virginia at 6pm local time. It's Liberty’s first season as a bowl eligible FBS team, so the Flames will be keen to make a hot start in front of their own fans.

The other two games on ESPN+ get going at 7pm ET / 4pm PT with Stephen F. Austin going to  Baylor and Nicholls at Kansas State.

The all-Texas showdown sees the much fancied Charlie Brewer at QB for the home team. Under the seasoned leadership of coach Matt Rhule, they've transformed from one of the worst teams in the NCAA to a real dark horse.

The K-State Wildcats are welcoming (if that's the right word) the Louisiana-based Nicholls players for a game brimming with determination after last year's fixture. Kansas will be favorites once again, but can Nicholls upset the odds like they did in overtime in 2018?

It's going to be a great evening of college football action and you can live stream all three games on ESPN+. Keep reading to discover the details and to see how to watch even if you're outside the US this Saturday.

If there is no official broadcast option in your country or you're abroad on holiday today, then you’ll need to use a VPN service to dial in to a location in the US that does have coverage.

A VPN is perfect for this as it allows you to change your IP address so you appear to be in a completely different location. They're surprisingly easy to use, too! We’ve tested hundreds of VPNs and can recommend ExpressVPN as the best VPN currently available:

Linux driver patches hint at AMD Renoir to support LPDDR4X memory

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:25 AM PDT

Great news this weekend for APU fans out there – while the AMD Navi GPUs and Ryzen 3rd generation chips are currently taking over the computing world, it doesn’t mean that the company has forgotten about its integrated graphics users.

In a recent report by Tom’s Hardware, it looks like AMD’s next generation APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) might come with LPDDR4X-4266 memory support. If true, this means that AMD Renoir will have a higher maximum data rate than AMD Picasso.

The report came a day after serial hardware leaker KOMACHI_ENSAKA shared on Twitter two recent Linux driver patches, the first of which showing AMD Renoir with LPDDR4X-4266 memory support and the second showing the APU touting the LPDDR4 variant’s more impressive 4,266 MHz speed.

Considering that Picasso, AMD’s current mobile APU, only accommodate DDR4-2400 modules that maxes out at 2,400 MHz, that’s a huge bump in data transfer rate. Putting that into further perspective, the LPDDR4 format maxes out at 3,200 MHz.

If these Linux patches are indeed the real thing, AMD Renoir will be the first AMD chip that supports LPDDR4X.

Improved performance

In any case, how accurate any of these leaks are will come to light when AMD Renoir comes out. It’s slated to replace AMD Picasso in 2020.

What does this mean exactly for potential AMD Renoir users? To start, faster memory delivers improved performance, so we could potentially experience better gaming experience. Additionally, since LPDDR4X boasts an almost 50% I/O voltage reduction, it should offer a more efficient power consumption.

This is in addition to the fact that AMD Renoir will be based on Zen 2 architecture and fabricated on 7nm process, which means that it will be thinner and have less power consumption than Picasso’s 12nm chips.

Of course, there’s also speculation that Renoir will run with Vega 10 graphics, instead of AMD’s latest Navi graphics, possibly to ensure that the new APUs will roll out faster. That is, if previous Linux patches are also to be believed.

Juventus vs Napoli live stream: how to watch today's Serie A football online from anywhere

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 10:14 AM PDT

One of the biggest ticket football games in the Italian season has arrived early in the 2019/20 Serie A calendar. The champions JUventus up against last season's second placed Napoli. In what should be a genuine race for the scudetto this time around, this match is looking like an early title six-pointer. If you're excited by the new season as we are, then you won't want to miss a Juventus vs Napoli live stream - that's where this guide comes in.

According to the bookies, it's these two teams that will be fighting it out for the title this year, and both started with away wins on the first day of the season - just in very different manners. Juventus had a regulation 1-0 stroll at Parma, while Napoli came through a 4-3 thriller away at Fiorentina.

Whether Juve boss Maurizio Sarri likes it or not, his club remains dominated by one man - one Cristiano Ronaldo. But it was the strength of his bench last weekend that shows just why the Old Lady are quite still so intimidating - the likes of de Light, Dybala, Cuadrado, Mandzukic, Bentancur and Buffon would waltz in to most line-ups around the globe.

But Napoli's team aren't exactly shy of star men either with Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens, and Kalidou Koulibaly all attempting to dethrone Juventus this season. Can they start this weekend with a huge win in Turin?

The good news is that you can watch this intriguing Serie A match (and, indeed, every televised Serie A match) from practically anywhere on Earth. To find out how, read on and we'll tell you the best ways to live stream Juventus vs Napoli.

How to live stream Serie A from outside your country

Keep on scrolling if your a citizen of the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand or Canada - we'll tell you your broadcasting option (spoiler alert, it's ESPN+ in the US).

But the minute you try to watch the game on those networks from outside your borders, you'll discover that you can't. The stream will be geo-blocked. The only legal way we know of getting around this is to use a VPN, which certainly beats watching some dodgy feed you've found online.

The OnePlus 7T Pro is likely to look a lot like the OnePlus 7 Pro

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 06:30 AM PDT

OnePlus has some new phones in the offing, and based on some renders that just hit the web, the upcoming OnePlus 7T Pro is going to look very much like the OnePlus 7 Pro that launched in May.

The renders come courtesy of @OnLeaks and 91mobiles, sources that can usually be trusted with their phone leaks, and they're based on the rumored specs and designs for the upcoming handsets.

As you can see from the pictures we've included below, the OnePlus 7T Pro is going to look virtually identical to the OnePlus 7 Pro, with no major design changes – pop-up selfie camera and all.

The sources do claim that a McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 7T Pro is going to be unveiled, just like last year: the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition featured a different color scheme and improved specs under the hood.

OnePlus 7T Pro leak

So what else do we know about the OnePlus 7T Pro? The phone is expected to show up with a 6.67-inch screen, a 90Hz display refresh rate, and a triple-lens rear camera. The internal processor may well get a bump to the Snapdragon 855 Plus.

Besides the McLaren Edition color scheme, a new blue variant could be added to the models, which you can see in the rendering above. The OnePlus 7 Pro currently comes in gray, almond, and a "nebular" shade of blue.

More significant design changes could be coming to the OnePlus 7T – other renderings, again courtesy of @OnLeaks, show a circular camera array around the back of the phone, which is quite a different look for OnePlus.

The company usually refreshes its flagship models with 'T' versions later in the year, and it seems as though 2019 will be no different. We don't know exactly when the official unveiling will be, but late September or October seems like a good bet.

Which brand do you think leads in updating smartphone software and security?

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 04:20 AM PDT

While there are tons of Android phone manufacturers, getting them to update your device isn't always easy. Even some of the larger Android manufacturers can sometimes take months to issue an update and this is usually a stat that Apple loves to have a slide on at iOS events.

If you are keen on purchasing an Android phone that gets updated fast, the you should look at Counterpoint Research’s latest white-paper which highlights the top vendors with fastest updates as Nokia, Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei.

Nokia leads the pack with 96% of its smartphones sold since Q3 2018 are running the latest version of Android which is Android Pie. Samsung follows at 89%, Xiaomi at  84% and Huawei at 82%.

The full Counterpoint Research report can be accessed by clicking here. Interestingly, vendors like OnePlus are missing from this report which, we would assume are amongst the fastest to issue Android updates.

Counterpoint Research’s states that device makers need to step up their efforts to provide regular software and security updates to their users.

Wales vs Ireland live stream: how to watch rugby international match online from anywhere

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 04:00 AM PDT

Ireland's World Cup preparations took a massive knock last weekend with a demoralising 57-15 record defeat at the hands of England in Twickenham.

Joe Schmidt must now pick his team off the floor and ready them to face world number one ranked Wales on their home turf. No easy feat as the scars will surely remain from Wales' 25-7 rout of Ireland in this year's Six Nations, a victory which sealed the Grand Slam for Warren Gatland's men.

Unsurprisingly Ireland look set to make wholesale changes to their line up following the humbling at Twickenham, with former Sale Sharks captain Will Addison set to come in at full-back. Niall Scannell has been drafted in at hooker, while Tadhg Beirne will play in the back row.

Wales also look set to ring the changes from their recent 13-6 win over England.

With Alun Wyn Jones set to be rested, Josh Navidi looks set to be handed the captain's armband, while there are Test debuts in store for prop Rhys Carré and wing Owen Lane.

It's the penultimate warm-up game for both teams ahead of the World Cup, and with both coaches set to name their final 31-man squad after the weekend's action, today's match provides a final chance to shine for those on the fringes.

It's also a game you can watch live and in full, no matter where in the world you are, by following our Wales vs Ireland live stream guide below.

How to live stream Wales vs Ireland in the UK for free

How to live stream wales vs Ireland when you're not in your country

If you're outside your country of residence - whether that be the UK or anywhere else (see your other options below) - and try to start streaming the rugby via your native broadcaster, you'll soon discover that you can't as it is location restricted. Fear not, the action is still within your reach. All you need to do is download and install a VPN to effectively trick your computer into thinking that it's back home. That way you can enjoy your home coverage (as long as you do so in compliance with the broadcaster's Ts&Cs) without delving into the dangers of an illegal stream.

iPhone 11 Pro will be the first iPhone I’m actually interested in – if it exists

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 03:00 AM PDT

The iPhone 11 doesn’t currently seem interesting enough to sway me from my perpetual ambivalence to Apple’s smartphones – they all seem like phones that are struggling to keep up with Android competitors, but ship for twice the price – but there might be a device in the works that changes my mind.

If rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 11 release will also bring with it the surprise unveiling of the iPhone 11 Pro; a handset that’s top-end even by iPhone standards, one that will come with an Apple Pencil-style stylus, and presumably a big screen.

This iPhone 11 Pro isn’t confirmed by any means, but there have been enough leaks about the handset for us to take them seriously, and it has us considering the possibility that Apple is going to take its iPhones down the path of the iPads – bringing out several different variants, headed by the powerful iPad Pro.

If real, the iPhone 11 Pro will be a huge departure from previous iPhones – and this fascinates me, since I don’t think most iPhones improve enough between iterations. While I still respect Apple’s products – the iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) is my go-to tablet – I’ve always felt the phones are a little disappointing.

However, if the iPhone 11 Pro rumors prove true, it could be the first Apple phone that I’m actually interested in or, dare I say it, excited for. Here’s why.

iPhone XS

The iPhone XS

What makes the iPhone 11 Pro so different?

While we don’t know the processing power, dimensions, camera specs, or special features of the iPhone 11 Pro, what we have heard is that it may come with a smaller Apple Pencil stylus, similar to the S Pen that comes with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.

In the Note 10, the S Pen has a range of useful features. You can take notes, draw, and annotate, as well as use several gestures that trigger functions, like taking pictures. Although they’re similar devices in terms of specs, the Samsung Galaxy S10 presents a completely different phone experience to the Note 10, and that’s because it doesn’t have the stylus.

This distinction will potentially be echoed in the iPhone 11 Pro. Assuming the base iPhone 11 is a small step up from the iPhone XS, the Pro will be the device which brings interesting new changes to the iPhone series, and that’s a step up that’s rare in Apple’s phone range.

What’s so special about a stylus?

A phone stylus isn’t just a replacement for a finger for people who have constantly grubby hands, but a peripheral that adds an extra layer of functionality to your handset.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 with its S Pen

The reason for this is that it’s just easier to draw with a stylus than with a finger. Styluses are designed for drawing on smartphone screens, and the experience of drawing is smoother because there’s less friction than when you’re using a human finger.

On top of that, us humans are trained to write and draw with a pencil, not with our fingers, so it’s more natural to use a stylus, and a lot more precise too.

Have you ever tried taking quick notes with a smartphone? It’s hard to type efficiently on such a small keyboard, and hand-written notes often look gibberish when using a finger. However, when you use a stylus, it’s easy to quickly write down notes and thoughts on the fly.

You can also draw, and annotate documents, so much more easily with a stylus, and it feels a lot more natural to do all of those things.

Why is this all so exciting?

I like to take notes, sign forms, and annotate documents a lot – I currently use an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil for this, but it can be pretty annoying to have to pull that out of my bag every time I need to do a quick task. A phone with a stylus would be valuable.

Yes, I could buy a Samsung Galaxy Note 10, but I’m a big fan of the iPad Pro, and really respect the way Apple’s ecosystem of devices works together smoothly. However, I haven’t gone down the phone route yet because, honestly, iPhones just seem a little boring, and Android phones are all a lot more exciting at the moment.

Sketch to your heart's content on an iPad Pro with its Apple Pencil

But if Apple were to bring out an iPhone 11 Pro with a stylus, designed for professionals or creatives, it would leave the other iPhones in its dust, and I’d be able to get so much more mileage out of it.

By writing this opinion piece out, I’ve managed to get myself anticipating a device which isn’t even remotely confirmed by Apple yet, and it’s worth bearing in mind that it’s entirely possible the iPhone 11 Pro isn’t a thing (or that it ends up getting called something totally different). Rumors and leaks sometimes point to real devices, but just as often they’re totally bogus.

Saying that, I’m surely not alone in hoping Apple finds some new way to make the iPhone 11 range a real step up from the iPhone X the kind of step the iPhone XS wasn’t and a stylus-toting high-end device would be just that handset.

Windows 10 May 2019 Update gets fixes for some long-standing bugs

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:32 AM PDT

Windows 10 May 2019 Update has been having a pretty smooth – and speedy – rollout thus far, with only relatively minor niggles, although there have been some more persistent issues remaining unsolved. But the good news is Microsoft has finally cured some of these with a new cumulative update.

The main thorny problems which have been hanging around include an error that has been preventing Windows Sandbox from running in certain cases (Microsoft’s solution that lets Windows 10 Pro users run suspicious apps in a sandbox away from the rest of the system). This has been fixed with cumulative update KB4512941.

And another sigh of relief can be breathed by those who were affected by compatibility issues caused by certain Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers and the May 2019 Update. This issue appeared over a month ago now, but Microsoft says it’s resolved with KB4512941 (although the safeguarding block won’t be removed until early September – so presumably next week).

The cumulative update also deals with an issue whereby a black screen is displayed when using Remote Desktop to connect to a machine running Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

Mixed Reality improvements

Microsoft further promises that the latest cumulative update improves the “user experience and app compatibility so that more Win32 apps will work with Windows Mixed Reality”, which is good news for those who have invested in one of those headsets.

There are a raft of other fixes which Microsoft has detailed in a long list here, but they also include resolving an issue preventing certain games from using Spatial Audio capabilities, and a problem where no cursor appears when selecting text input on a touchscreen.

As we mentioned at the outset, the May 2019 Update rollout appears to have accelerated to a very speedy pace, with the upgrade now on 33% of Windows 10 machines according to one set of stats – that figure having tripled since the previous month, showing Microsoft has definitely opened up the floodgates.

Most of the folks upgrading are doing so from the April 2018 Update, with prodding from Microsoft because the end-of-service date for that particular update isn’t that far off now (November 12).

If your Apple Watch display is cracking, Apple might replace the screen for free

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 02:30 AM PDT

Apple says it has identified a problem that "under very rare circumstances" can lead to cracking around the edge of the screen on aluminum Series 2 and Series 3 versions of the Apple Watch – and if you're affected, you can have a free replacement.

"Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will replace the screen on eligible Apple Watch units that exhibit this type of crack, free of charge," Apple says on the official support page for the issue.

What we don't know is what's causing this cracking, but it's possible that some sort of manufacturing defect is to blame. That the issue only happens under "very rare circumstances" is encouraging for Series 2 and Series 3 owners.

"The crack may begin on one side and then may continue around the screen as shown in the images below," Apple says.

Apple Watch repair

If you have noticed this sort of cracking on the display of your Apple Watch, first head to the support page on Apple's website and check that your model matches one of the case size, color, and date sold combinations listed.

You can then take it into an Apple Store or an approved repair shop, or post it off to Apple, to get the screen replaced free of charge. According to Apple you'll be without your wearable for about five business days.

These official repair programs are now reasonably common for Apple, though usually only a few devices are affected. The Apple Watch cracking certainly doesn't seem to be on the scale of the MacBook Pro keyboard breaking.

In the meantime we're waiting for the Apple Watch Series 5 to make an appearance: we're expecting it to be unveiled on September 10, alongside some new iPhones, with some new casing options in tow.

Horn vs Zerafa live stream: how to watch tonight's boxing from anywhere

Posted: 31 Aug 2019 12:03 AM PDT

Its a big night for Australian fight fans as compatriots Jeff Horn and Michael Zerafa go to toe-to-toe in Victoria. Former WBO welterweight title holder Horn will be putting his WBA Oceania Middleweight belt on the line for tonight's fight, and will be facing a fellow Aussie that's far from the journeyman usually placed in front of a fighter with an eye on a world title fight.

You can watch all of the action from the comfort of your own sofa from anywhere in the world with our Horn vs Zerafa live stream guide below.

Horn, a domestic boxing hero, is probably best know worldwide for his controversial points win over Manny Pacquiao back in 2017 which saw him unseat the then WBO welterweight champ. Having lost his title to Terence Crawford a year later, Horn has since moved to middleweight, and will have his eye on a late December title fight with WBA middleweight champion Ryoto Murata in Japan that has been agreed in principle.

Zerafa, an Olympic gold medal winner at London 2012, has a strong pedigree, having only lost to top draw opposition (e.g. Peter Quillin, Kell Brook, Arif Magomedov) and will be hoping for complacency from his opponent.

To ensure you can see the whole thing in real time so you don't miss any of the action, we've put together this guide to help you watch a Horn vs Zerafa live stream. As with most boxing, it's not always available in every country so you may find a VPN is the best way to stream the fight, which you'll find out all about below.

But if you're abroad this weekend then you'll need another way to watch and avoid possible geo-blocking. That's where using a VPN comes in, as it's a legitimate way to watch the coverage without having to resort to some dodgy illegal stream you found on Reddit that may leave your laptop or mobile unsafe.

UFC live stream: how to watch Andrade vs Weili at Fight Night China online from anywhere

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 05:41 PM PDT

How would you like a side of MMA with your breakfast? UFC returns with Fight Night 157 in the early hours of Saturday morning beaming all the way from China.

The event will be held in Shenzen for the very first time as UFC continues its quest for global ultimate fighting dominance. That means this one kicks off earlier for MMA fans in the US with the main card starting at 6am ET, 3am PT on ESPN+. We’ll explain how much it costs and how it works below so that you're completely clued up on how to live stream UFC 157.

There are five matches on the main Fight Night 157 card (following six in the prelims) with plenty of local interest across the men's and women's divisions. China meets Brazil as welterweights Li Jingliang and Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos go head-to-head in the Octagon, while Jamahal 'Sweet Dreams' Hill represents American interests with a light-heavyweight match-up against Da Un Jung.

But undeniably the main attraction is the match in the main event spot - a Women's Strawweight Championship bout where the awesome Jessica Andrade puts her belt on the line against the Chinese Weili Zhang. If you know anything about Andrade then you know just how dangerous she can be, and she is looking like a mighty champion after winning the belt from Rose Namajunas back in May. But Zhang is currently on a 19 fight win streak and shouldn't be underestimated as a challenger.

UFC Fight Night China is set to be a real stunner and you can watch it in its entirety. All the fights can be watched in the US exclusively online via the ESPN+ subscription service. So keep reading to see your viewing options to get a UFC live stream, whether or not you're in the US this weekend.

Worry not if you're a huge UFC fan but aren't in the US to watch that ESPN+ coverage this weekend. If you've got your subscription sorted but then find the coverage is geo-blocked, you can try using a VPN to change your IP address to a US server and watch as if you were back at home.

Apple : G Suite vs Office 365: which is better for students?

G Suite vs Office 365: which is better for students?

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 02:18 PM PDT

Before deciding on using G Suite or Office 365, first look if you already have free access to one of them as a student through your school. Most school districts or schools have an education partnership with either Google or Microsoft and extend some of the services to students. It would be smart to install the school's chosen program to your device to be compatible with the same apps and services.

However, if you'd like an account separate from the school's, or if your school doesn't offer free access to its students, then we recommend using Office 365 Education because you can still get a account as a student even if your school doesn't have a contract with them. All you need is a valid school email address. Office 365 Education gives you access to all Office programs and Teams — its collaboration tool — and comes with plenty of cloud storage.

Comparing the two

What you need to know about Office 365 Education

With an Office 365 Education subscription you get access to eight Office programs, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. You also have access to 12 Microsoft services, like OneDrive, Skype, SharePoint, and Forms. Office 365 lives in the cloud, so it doesn't take up valuable space on your computer and allows you to access all its programs and saved projects from anywhere and from any device. Simply log into your online portal and you have access to everything from Publisher to OneNote.

Apps can be pinned to Android smartphones and tablets for quick access on the go, and you can download each Office program to your laptop or computer to work offline. However, you will need to log into your online account often enough to keep your subscription active.

Microsoft Teams is a live chat program that comes with your Office 365 Education subscription that lets you talk with people in your study group, teachers, or other students in real-time. Anyone can create channels that reflect a specific class or projects, or you can keep it more confidential with person-to-person chat — like Slack. From within Teams you can call other collaborators or hold a video conference with up to 50 people at once. You can also share documents and give direct access to them so everyone in your group can add, edit and work on the project at the same time from the Teams Hub viewing window. As the files are changed, all copies, including those saved in your OneDrive, are automatically updated, too.

One important note about Office 365 Education: If you're given access through your school, it's possible for administrators, collaborators, teachers, and others to see some personal information and saved files. Since Admins set the rules for OneDrive, they could restrict files being deleted and see data being saved there. Even if you create an Education account on your own, Microsoft will automatically connect your account to your school's if one ever becomes available. Because of this we recommend not using this program for personal use. You can, however, purchase an Office 365 Personal account to use separately from your school account to keep personal files and documents private. This subscription will cost you about $70 per year.

All about G Suite for Education

G Suite for Education comes with an impressive amount of collaboration tools with Hangouts, Groups, Jamboard, and Classroom. Each one allows real-time communication and project creation with multiple people in a way that is easy to use and see. You can chat or hold video conferences using Hangouts to help everyone get on the same page. Other collaboration tools available for G Suite users include Jamboard — a cloud-based whiteboard — and Classroom.

Classroom is managed by individual teachers to create a place for assigning homework, sending reminders, gathering and grading finished projects and pass along virtual handouts and other study materials. Educators can also assign group projects and create study groups within Classroom to help foster collaboration.

G Suite lets you share files, save in Drive with others, and allow them to see and edit them in real-time. This is done by creating a link and sharing it. You can see when others are in the same files along with you and watch as edits are being made. However, it's a bit clunky, and we notice there is a slight delay, so it's possible multiple edits could mesh together and cause some confusion. G Suite keeps track of changes, though, and won't make them permanent without your consent.

G Suite's office programs, like Docs and Sheets, work similarly to Microsoft Office programs with most features and tools located in the same places, and it uses some of the same in-program shortcuts. You can also open and view Office documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows in G Suite, though you do need to convert them into a Google format to edit them. This may change some of the fonts and formatting of the projects and require a little more fix-it work on your end. Also, we noticed that some tools and functions don't work the same, or aren't available at all in G Suite. For example, some of the macro functions in Excel aren't available in Google Sheets, so it's harder to produce the same results.

The biggest catch to using G Suite for Education is students can't have an account unless their school has a subscription. Even teachers can't sign up or use any of the tools until the school has created a partnership with Google.

Google has two G Suite education programs with one being offered to schools and its teachers and students for free. With this program integrated at school, teachers can set up individual Classrooms, give access to G Suite to their students using a school email address, and create an environment for effective collaboration and learning. Students are welcome to have a personal Google One account to access Google Drive and office programs, although personal accounts cannot be used to access G Suite for Education.

Compatibility of Office 365 and G Suite

Because both Office 365 and G Suite are cloud-based, you can access them from just about any device, including Macs. Simply logging into your account through a web browser gives you access to all your programs, files, and apps. Both Office 365 and G Suite have apps you can download to your cellphone to access and edit specific files, though you need an individual app for each program. However, installing the Google Drive or OneDrive app does let you tap into any saved file created with its compatible programs with some basic editing and sharing capabilities.

If you, or your school, have a Chromebook, you will see easy access to G Suite and other Google cloud programs already installed on the homescreen. However, if you are a 365 user you can still log into your online account and use its programs from a Chromebook using an internet browser, just like you do from a laptop or computer.

Both G Suite and Office 365 have ways to access programs offline. For G Suite users, simply indicate from within G Suite that you'd like a specific file available offline. Once the device you're using connects to the internet, the file changes will be updated within the cloud program.

To use Office 365 offline, you need to download the Office programs to a compatible laptop or computer running Windows. You are given the option of installing Office programs locally when you first being your subscription but can download them any time during your active subscription. You do need to log into the cloud-based program at least every 30 days for your online Office 365 subscription to remain active and to sync changes made offline. Microsoft will prompt you to do this, so you don't have to remember on your own.

Wrapping it up: Our final thoughts

When it comes to choosing between G Suite for Education or Office 365 Education, start with finding out which one your school uses. This is as easy as asking a teacher or speaking with someone from student services. Using the same program will ensure you are on the same page as your teachers and have access to the same collaboration tools they use.

If you don't need to use a certain program to collaborate with your teacher or classmates, it then tends to come down to personal preference. You can use one over the other, or even mix and match programs from each package. Since both G Suite and Office 365 are cloud-based, you can easily toggle between them without having to worry about hard drive space.

The only reason Office 365 Education gets an extra boost from us — and we love using Google and its programs — is because you can download this program for free as long as you, or you child, is a student with an active and verifiable school email address. Even if your school doesn't have a contract with Microsoft to use its educator programs, students are still able to use the program at no cost to them.

G Suite, on the other hand, is only available if your school has contracted with Google to use its education program. If your school doesn't use G Suite, you can still access a free, individual Google One account for finishing homework assignments. You just won't have access to the collaboration tools available through G Suite for Education.

Phone grips are the best tech accessory you can get your kid as they head back to school

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:50 PM PDT

Phone grips might seem like an unnecessary add-on — "How could you possibly need help holding onto a phone?" — but I just have a few questions for you. How often does your child drop their phone? How often do you see them hunched over their phone to watch a video instead of propping the phone up and watching at a more natural angle? How often do you see them stretching their fingers out after a long night of texting their friends and sending weird meme selfies? If the answer to any of these questions was "a lot", then do yourself, your child, and your wallet a favor.

Buy them a phone grip. You can even buy them a cool one for less money than pizza night!

A penny of prevention is worth a pound of broken touchscreen

They can make shock-resistant, drop-tested smartphone cases all the livelong day — and they do a great job of it — but nothing beats preventing the phone from falling out of your hands in the first place. That's the first and foremost reason to buy you kid a grip: so that they don't break their phone and make you shell out for repairs or replacements.

I'll take a $10 grip over a multi-hundred dollar repair bill any day of the week, which is why every phone that crosses my desk gets a PopSocket, Style Ring, or some other grip on it the second I'm done reviewing the first case. Whether it's a petit Pixel or gargantuan Galaxy, I have an easier and more reliable time hold onto the grip than I do to a flat-backed case alone.

Phone grips are healthy, even when your child's phone habits aren't

'm something of an introvert, but when out and about in the world, it's hard not to notice the tech — and tech habits — of those around me, especially when they're bad habits I'm still actively fighting myself. I'll find whole families hunched over their phones, teens overextending their thumbs trying to one-hand a text message and propping their phone on their pinky while taking selfies and scrolling Instagram.

This is bad. Don't be like me.

I'm not a posture queen by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm painfully aware of the extra strain hunching over your phone or laptop can cause over time. Make all the jokes you want about Blackberry thumb and texting neck but an RSI is a painful and often irreversible thing, something I know firsthand: even years after swapping to phone grips, my left pinky yells at me every day I skip my GrabTab to review a case.

Now, a phone grip isn't going to magically cure your kid's poor posture hunching over the phone, but it can significantly help their hands by giving them something easier and more comfortable to grip. The ability of most grips to double as kickstands can also help improve their poster by allowing them to prop up their phone at an angle rather than hunching over it flat on a desk.

Kick bad habits and poor productivity with phone grip kickstands

Phone stands are awesome, but they're only useful when you have them on you. Since most phone grips double as at least landscape kickstands, adding one to your kid's phone can help make their phone and their homework time more productive since they then have a kickstand with them they can use on any flat surface.

I often reference notes on my phone while writing on my Chromebook, and this is especially helpful when I use phone grips like the Spigen Style Ring POP and Scooch Winback that keep my phone vertical rather than landscape. Kickstands can make looking at a phone easier on your child's neck by lessening their need to hunch over, too, compounding the grip's in-hand benefits.

Phone grips are cool

When your kid sees a phone grip with Darth Vader or Stitch on them, they just see a cool character that they want on all the things. This gives PopSockets a very unique advantage in trying to get your kids to want to use a phone grip, especially now that Swappable PopSockets will allow your kid to swap Darth Vader for the Dark Knight depending on which of their five favorite shirts they're wearing.

Both PopSockets and Speck GrabTabs have Pride collections, too, meaning if your middle or high school has a cause they're behind, they can show it off on their most visible accessory: their phone grip. PopSockets' Poptivism grips even give money to partner charities like March for Our Lives, Girls Inc and The Trevor Project.

So let your kid pick out a phone grip that speaks to their style. Call it a Back To School gift, even though it's healthier for them and extra phone insurance for you.

Best phone grips for students in 2019

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:35 PM PDT

School is a dangerous environment for most tools and tech, but none more so that phones. Phones are essential items in a phone, always in arm's reach but often bumped, dropped, or banged in the hustle and bustle of changing classrooms or running to meet up with friends at lunch. Phone grips have been a lifesaver for me and my slim fingers, and considering how affordable these ones are, they're well worth the investment.

Why PopSockets win the popularity contest

Now that PopSockets come in a swappable style that allow you to easily swap between styles to match your kid's wardrobe — and can come off for wireless charging, should that be a thing your kid actually uses — the reasons not to use one are becoming few and far between. They're affordable, they're recognizable, and with the Pop Culture collection finally updated to swappable PopTops, they're cool, too.

PopSockets are also as much a toy as they are a tool, and I often pop one of my spares up and down when I get bored during staff meetings, and I'm sure there are some easily distracted kids (like me) out there who could use a fidget toy to help them avoid drifting into a daydream during a lecture.

Kickstands are cool, but you know what's really cool? Vertical kickstands

There's more to a phone grip that in-hand use, though. While most non-fabric phone grips double as landscape kickstands, the number of phone grips that allow you to set your phone upright next to your computer or lunch so you can scroll through Twitter or reference notes while rushing through some last-minute homework are fewer in number and usually larger in size.

The Spigen Style Ring POP and the original Spigen Style Ring are something of the standard-bearer when it comes to phone grip kickstands, but I also adore the Scooch Wingback for its springy metal coil, which works great as a vertical kickstand for most phones and has a satisfying sound when you click it in and out.

Tip-off time is here! Taking place over the course of a fortnight, the 18th edition of the FIBA World Cup takes place this year in China across eight different venues. And you're in the right place to discover how to get a Basketball World Cup live stream from your corner of the Earth.

While usually held every four years, there's been a bit of a longer wait for Basketball fans this time out, with the tournament delayed by a year, meaning it now falls out of sync with the FIFA World Cup for the first time. There's also a new expanded format, with 32 teams now taking part, up from the previous 24.

The USA go into the tournament as two-time defending champions as well as clear favourites, and will be looking to become the first nation to win the World Cup three times on the bounce.

It won't be a cakewalk for the Americans, however. Many of the big names from the NBA have not made themselves available, with the likes of Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook,Kyrie Irving, Paul George and Anthony Davis all withdrawing.

On top of that, the chasing pack this time out will be stronger than ever, with Serbia, Spain and Greece all genuine contenders.

Beyond the tournament itself there's more at stake - the  FIBA World Cup will this year act as qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, with seven of the twelve spots up for grabs (the top two finishers from both Europe and the Americas, along with the top one from each of Africa, Asia and Oceania).

FIBA World Cup 2019 Groups

Group A: China (hosts), Venezuela, Poland, Ivory Coast

19 school supplies to brighten a student's day in 2019

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 01:08 PM PDT

Ahh, school days. The time when students are busy cramming for tests and studying for essays. Students often don't have the time to take care of their everyday needs, whether that be grocery shopping, replacing daily items, or buying something fun for themselves. We've rounded up some awesome supplies that would make any high school or college student happy to receive. See which items remind you of your student.

Class is in session

High school and college students can have pretty stressful lives depending on the amount of classes they're taking and the upcoming events in their lives. You can help them out by providing everyday necessities or fun items that they wouldn't be able to get for themselves. Just keep in mind that many college students don't have a lot of space. You'll want to send them things that will be useful without cluttering up their dorms or apartments.

I highly recommend sending an Amazon Pantry food care package like this Variety Fun Care Package. It provides a mix of cookies and crackers to satisfy both a savory and sweet craving and there are 50 snacks in all. High school students will enjoy the treats and college students will find this a welcome surprise as they usually aren't able to buy a lot of snacks for themselves.

Know any coffee fiends? Give them the caffeine boost they crave with Death Wish Coffee, the world's strongest coffee. These grounds have been enjoyed by thousands of coffee lovers, have a bold flavor, and are USDA certified organic. If you're looking to supply them with a different type of energy, consider this Anker PowerCore 10000 PD. It's a super practical, portable battery charger that they can use to recharge their smartphone, tablet, headphones, or a number of other electronics when rushing from one classroom to another.

AMD Ryzen Processors are seeing wider adoption among PC enthusiasts

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:36 AM PDT

It's no secret that AMD has been on top of the world with its Ryzen 3rd Generation processors and Navi graphics cards, but we're starting to see some indication that hardcore PC enthusiasts are starting to side with Team Red.

The folks over at KitGuru spotted some statistics from PassMark, a popular CPU benchmarking tool, which suggest that AMD has gained some market share over Intel. More specifically, in Q3 2019, AMD jumped to 31.9% market share, up from 23.1% in Q2 2019. Similarly, Intel dropped to 68.10% in Q3 2019 from 76.9% in the prior quarter.

It's important to note that this isn't counting the amount of processors sold – right now it looks like AMD is way ahead in that regard. It's only considering the amount of processors that are being benchmarked through PassMark. There are plenty of – heck, probably the majority of – never benchmark their hardware through these kind of tools.

What this means, however, is that the type of people who do benchmark their hardware (PC enthusiasts) are adopting AMD hardware at a higher rate. That's probably because the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X is more powerful than the Intel Core i9 9900K – even if Intel disagrees

According to these results, AMD and Intel are closer than they've been since Q4 2007. And, with AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3rd Generation likely coming later this year, we could see that gap close even more.

Rebuilding trust in a data-driven world

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 11:33 AM PDT

Trust: a firm belief in the reliability, strength, truth, or capability of someone – or something. By this definition, trust in business has perhaps been waning of late, particularly when it comes to the integrity of financial data

In fact, in the UK, a series of high-profile corporate collapses caused by poor commercial management, followed by a trio of major reviews into the audit industry, means that financial services is now the country’s least-trusted sector.

It is therefore no surprise that rebuilding trust has become a top priority for CFOs, and a good place to start is by improving trust internally. How do you achieve this? With finance’s number one driving force: data.

Financial data holds the key

Since businesses rely on financial data to inform many important decisions, confidence in the numbers is the first step toward rebuilding trust. A recent BlackLine survey revealed that nearly 70% of global business leaders and finance professionals believe their organisation has made a significant business decision based on inaccurate financial data; while over half are not completely confident they can identify financial errors before reporting results.

Not only can tapping into poor data put you at risk of becoming the next front-page scandal and damage your reputation, it can seriously set your organisation back in its efforts to transform longer-term.

As awareness of the risks associated with inaccurate reporting grows, finance professionals are ready to see more accountability in the industry. So, how can they be confident that the decisions being made based on their data are the right ones?

Building confidence in the numbers

To build real confidence in data, the crucial first step is to ensure the reliability and accuracy of financial information. Over a quarter (26%) of finance executives report they are concerned about financial errors they know must exist, but over which they have no visibility. With trust hanging in the balance, efforts must be focused on resolving these blind spots and unseen errors that undermine confidence in the numbers.

At the centre of these efforts lies real-time, cloud-based process automation. By automating manual, time-intensive processes, such as transaction matching or journal entries, data not only becomes more reliable, but people can also spend more time on consultative, analytical tasks; in turn adding more value to the business.

Continuous accounting, for example, a model that combines modern finance strategies and cloud technology, can put an end to high margins of error and deliver faster analysis and increased operational efficiency. With real-time updates, consistent reports, and numerous controls to enforce accountability – departments are beginning to reap benefits of better data integrity and a bolstered culture of trust.

Transparency: the key to accountability

As technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and robotic process automation (RPA) contribute more toward the decision making process, transparency becomes fundamental. Not only is full transparency critical for effective decision making, but it will also be a significant factor in achieving ‘ethical’ and ‘explainable’ AI.

While finance professionals have always expected to be held accountable for certifying the books, they are increasingly putting their name against decisions made by machine learning algorithms. As a result, it’s never been more important to understand why recommendations are made, or how decisions are reached. Otherwise, how can you ever be confident in the validity of the outcome you are held accountable for?

The need for transparency is only going to grow as technology becomes more imbedded in finance decisions. For example, if an algorithm denies a loan request based on factors such as postcode, it may be inadvertently replicating the bias we see in human decision making. Understanding how the decision is reached, however, would allow a person to review or challenge it, helping to determine the correct, but also ethical, course of action.

Future-proofing finance

While truly intelligent technology like AI is not a reality for finance right now, it will certainly start to penetrate more tasks and roles within the industry as it advances in future. For now, automation in finance ensures that wider business decisions are made based on the most accurate and up to date information available.

Not only does this help to build a culture of trust within the finance department, but the shift towards internal integrity will play a pivotal role in boosting trust in the business more generally – be that with its customers, shareholders or the public.

Ultimately, using automation to enhance the accuracy and reliability of your company’s data will pay dividends further down the line. After all, what use will intelligent AI be if it learns from flawed and inaccurate data sets? And more importantly, who would put their name to the decisions or recommendations it makes? The bottom line is that data-driven businesses simply won’t succeed without first laying the foundations of integrity and trust.

Google ups Play Store bug bounties

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 10:17 AM PDT

Google is making it easier for security researchers to get paid for finding bugs on the Play Store by increasing the scope of its Google Play Security Reward Program (GPSRP) to all apps on its store with 100 million or more installs.

The search giant has also launched a new program in collaboration with HackerOne called the Developer Data Protection Reward Program (DDPRP) aimed at finding data abuses in Android apps, OAuth projects and Chrome extensions.

Since the launch of its bug bounty program in 2010, Google has already paid security researchers over $15m and GPSRP has already paid out over $256k in bounties so far. By adding popular Android apps to the program, the company is making them eligible for rewards regardless of whether the app's developers have their own vulnerability disclosure or bug bounty program.

In exchange for paying out a bug bounty, Google will use the vulnerability data collected by security researchers to help create automated checks that scan all of the apps in the Play Store for similar vulnerabilities. Developers whose apps contain bugs are notified via the Play Console and the App Security Improvement (ASI) program will provide them with information on the vulnerability and how to fix it. Back in February, Google revealed that ASI has already helped more than 300k developers fix over 1m apps on Google Play.

Developer Data Protection Reward Program

In addition to expanding its current Android bug bounty program, Google also launched DDPRP to identify and mitigate data abuse issues in Android apps, OAuth projects and Chrome extensions. Instead of finding vulnerabilities, this program will reward security researchers that find and report apps which have violated Google Play, Google API or Chrome Web Store Extensions program policies.

Those that can find evidence of data abuse that can be verified could get paid. On the DDPRP page on HackerOne's website, Google highlights apps that access a user's contacts and doesn't treat this data as personal or sensitive data as well as apps that violate its permission policy by using contact data without a user's permission for another service unrelated to the original app.

The company did not provide a maximum reward amount but depending on its impact, a single report could earn a security researcher a $50k bounty.

Android apps and Chrome extensions that abuse user's data will be removed from their respective stores and if developer is also found abusing access to Gmail restricted scopes their API access will be removed.

Best SSL certificate services to buy from in 2019: Get the cheapest price today

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 09:50 AM PDT

In the middle ages, the Knights Templar established the key processes for the modern system of notary services, banking, loans, and mortgages that we have today. During that era, Knights carried with them documentation that proved their identity, created by a notary, often embossed with official wax seals.

The importance of these documents was enhanced by a Papal declaration in 1139 that allowed the Knights Templar to pass freely through any border, pay no taxes, and be granted total freedom from every authority other than the Vatican.

Without the documents created by a notary, anyone could impersonate a Knight, and avoid the laws that applied to ordinary citizens throughout the rest of Europe.

And when it comes to the worldwide web today, we can draw a parallel with a similar document of authority: the SSL certificate. SSL Certification (or TLS to be more accurate) is a means to verify the source of web pages, domains, and open the door to information exchanges and electronic financial transactions.

But how do you pick a good SSL provider? Simple – read on and find out. First of all, we’ve got a list of 10 of our favored SSL certificate providers, although everyone’s needs vary, so following our list, we will engage in an in-depth discussion of all the criteria you should consider when picking the right company for you.

Below are the best SSL certificate providers of 2019 :

Comodo SSL

As a highly affordable provider of SSL services, Comodo SSL has made some significant headway in the past few years.

Much of that success has been the result of very aggressive pricing, with a DV level ‘Positive SSL’ Certification costing just $7.27 (£5.5) currently for four-year coverage.

A ‘Premium’ SSL solution only costs $56.06 (£42.4) for four years. That package includes a fully validated certificate, 256-bit encryption and a $250,000 (£189,000) relying party warranty.
But be warned, validation can take some time if the information required for Comodo SSL to complete the checking process isn’t available online. On the plus side, the company has excellent support people should you have installation or browser issues.

DigiCert

Having operated independently for some years, in 2017, DigiCert has completed an acquisition of Symantec’s website security and related PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) solutions. The motivation for this buyout was that Symantec managed to convince 90% of Fortune 500 companies to pay for the Norton Secured Seal.

These are now DigiCert’s customers, and the company has implemented a plan to transition those using Symantec products on to DigiCert when appropriate.

The starting price for an SSL Certificate is $218 (£172) per year, although you might be able to better that with a two-year deal. A wildcard option, covering unlimited servers and a complete multi-level domain, is $688 (£541) – an enticing prospect.

Entrust Datacard

Based in the US, Entrust has been in business since 1994 and has garnered a reputation as a well-oiled machine for generating certification quickly and smoothly.

Entrust was built around a wide selection of security products: ID card printers, authentication systems, credit card printers and a PKI are all among its product lines.

With so much invested in secure systems, SSL certificates are considered one of its strongest offerings. Customers especially like the ability to manage numerous certificates across multiple domains from a management console.

Prices start at $174 (£130) per year for its Standard SSL single site product, climbing to $609 (£450) for a Wildcard SSL covering unlimited servers and subdomains. From what we’ve seen, most customers seem delighted with the service at all levels, seemingly justifying the extra cost over cheaper options.

GeoTrust

GeoTrust was once owned by VeriSign and then Symantec, and due to the sale of the latter operation, it might also be part of DigiCert by now. The business covers three main areas: SSL certificates, Signing Services and SSL for enterprise services.

Those looking for SSL certification will find that GeoTrust offers a comprehensive selection starting with domain-level and progressing up to its True BusinessID with EV level certification.

Pricing is more competitive at the higher end, so those wanting a single site certificate might want to avoid GeoTrust, but those needing EV or OV level products should take a look.

Enterprise solutions specifically tailored to government organizations, healthcare businesses and financial institutions are part of the GeoTrust range. Be prepared for identity checks to take longer than others, but the thoroughness of these checks has enhanced GeoTrust’s status.

GlobalSign

Where some operations have a wide client base, GlobalSign is very focused on enterprise customers, especially those who are looking to deploy highly scalable PKI solutions.

By taking this route, an enterprise customer can have all the rules, policies, and procedures for using SSL certificates, and their subsequent creation, distribution and revocation are all handled for them. But if you only want SSL certificates, GlobalSign can do that too.

Having the level of support and organization that GlobalSign delivers doesn’t come cheap, and even for a single site with only DV level certification, prices start at $249 (£189). For those wanting the full EV certification, expect to pay $599 (£455)  per year for a single site.

GoDaddy

GoDaddy might be better known for its web hosting plans, but it’s also a big provider of SSL services.

Instead of offering DV, OV and EV certification at different prices, they all cost the same relatively low price. The pricing structure is instead based on a single site, multiple sites, or a domain with full subdomain cover.

Currently a single site, (DV, OV or EV level) costs $79.99 (£63.5) per year, and the all level domain solution is only $369.99 (£294) per year (at the moment you get 20% off for the first year). The return on that investment is the best SHA2 and 2048-bit encryption, and the trust seal provided by McAfee Secure.

One quirk of GoDaddy’s offering is that while the fresh installation is relatively cheap, renewal can be more expensive. If you can be organized enough to do fresh installs each year, you can save yourself a little money over simply renewing.

Network Solutions

In some respects Network Solutions is a little like GoDaddy, in that they both offer a wide range of web-related services, like domain names and e-commerce solutions, and SSL certification isn’t their sole focus.

What might attract customers is this firm’s pricing, with a base cost that starts at $59.99 (£45.5) with a 2-year term for a single site, rising to $403 (£309) for an EV level certificate that should be issued within five working days.

The weakness of this offering would seem to be the support team, which has been described in less than glowing terms by some customers. So given that, if you understand the details of installing certificates, then this might be for you, but anyone wanting extensive technical support may want to look elsewhere.

RapidSSL

RapidSSL is owned by GeoTrust, another SSL provider we’ve already mentioned in this list. The business logic behind this is that whereas GeoTrust focuses on corporate giants, RapidSSL targets smaller businesses that are more cost-sensitive.

For just $17.95 (£13.6) per year, RapidSSL will provide a single domain certificate with 128/256-bit encryption with a browser recognition that exceeds 99%. A wildcard certificate that covers unlimited subdomains is $149 (£113) per year, plus it includes a $10,000 (£7,500) warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Free support is provided 24/7 by web and email, and installation tools are part of the package at no extra cost. And, even at this low price, the service is built on the same GeoTrust global infrastructure as the corporate customers benefit from.

SSL.com

If the most important metric of this sector is customer approval, then SSL.com is delivering the type of SSL service that wins friends and returning customers. Part of that equation is strong customer services and support teams, and the other element is competitive pricing which values those willing to commit for longer periods than a year.

A single domain level certificate starts at $49 (£36) per year but can be as low as $36.75 (£28) per annum if bought for five years. If you’re a smaller business looking for certification, SSL.com might be a good place to start.

Thawte

The company is hardly a household name, but Thawte has managed to corral more than 40% of the global market for SSL certificates. So far it has issued nearly a billion certificates in 240 countries worldwide.

What’s helped the firm establish this position is the strength of its offerings, and selling points include impressive browser compatibility, excellent certificate management tools, and up to 256-bit encryption.

For those who need EV level certification, the price is $179 (yearly plan), and that comes with a promise to complete the background checks in one to three days maximum. The success that Thawte has had seems well grounded in a strong combination of customer satisfaction and affordable pricing.

Understanding SSL

The mechanism of SSL certification has two important functions: authentication and encryption.

As a means to authorize a connection, the SSL certificate holds information about the business, website or person you are connecting to, and is also a means to verify that identity through a third-party.

If you wish to see this in action, look at the URL of this web page in the address bar of your browser, and alongside the text, just on the left, you should see a small green padlock that identifies that this is a secure SSL-certificated site.

Clicking on the padlock will tell you that the connection is secure and allow you to reveal what information the certificate has. That will include the users of the certificate, and the SSL provider that bestowed authorization.

In addition to authority and verification, the SSL certificate also includes a means to encrypt traffic between the user’s computer and the website. Without this encryption, sensitive information like passwords could potentially be compromised by a nefarious party intercepting the data traffic flowing between the client computer and the web server.

The security of this system is underpinned by another independent third-party, the trusted Certificate Authority (CA), which issues the SSL certificate under strict guidelines.

Very much mirroring the phrase ‘my word is my bond’, the support of a CA with an SSL certificate is a declaration of trust in a person, company or website. And the CA is in turn verified by a Root certificate holder, proving that they are trusted to issue certificates and revoke them where necessary.

Should these trusted relationships fail, the SSL certificates become invalid. In that case, anyone visiting a location covered by one such certificate would immediately be warned that it has no valid SSL certificate, and that their connection may no longer be secure.

As you can imagine, the impact that a revoked certificate would have on a live business would be very serious. So it’s vital that you get your SSL certificate from the right source, backed by the most respected CA.

Having inherent trust where identity is concerned is necessary, but having the right level of certification for the business is also very important.

Special relationships

When people talk about SSL certificates, it is easy to assume that they’re all the same. But depending on who authorized them and how diligent the background checks were, they come with different levels of validation.

Here are the four levels of validation most commonly used:

  • Self-signed. At first glance, the idea of self-signed certificates seems mildly ridiculous, because looking in the mirror and confirming that the reflection is indeed you won’t work at passport control. However, if the purpose of these certificates is to control traffic on an internal corporate intranet, it works well enough, and avoids the browser repeatedly complaining about unsecured web locations.
  • Domain Validation (DV). The next rung up is the Domain Validated SSL certificate, which is purely a confirmation that the web pages are truly coming from the expected domain and not some other. It says nothing about the person or business in question, just that they own a domain.
  • Organization Validated (OV). The highest level of validation that an individual can aspire to, and high enough for many businesses. Company credentials and those of the named owners are checked against extensive databases, including those held by local governments.
  • Extended Validation (EV). The pinnacle of SSL issuance is the fully authenticated SSL certificate, needed for any company that wants to offer their customers secure web locations, email and financial transactions.

While self-signed and domain level certificates have their uses, it’s the OV and EV levels that businesses truly need. Because they prove that a company has domain ownership, a genuine business, and that the certificate was applied for by authorized personnel.

As it’s reasonable to expect, checks of this type take time. Therefore, applying for and being granted an authenticated SSL certificate is not something that can happen five minutes before a new web venture is about to go live.

The other element that separates one SSL certificate from another is the level of encryption that it applies, and exactly how secure that makes it.

Encryption

The model for SSL certificates allows for them to use 128 or 256-bit encryption, should the client’s browser support it. Calculations show that it would take a supercomputer 13.75 billion years to test every permutation of a 128-bit encrypted code.

And, for good measure, the initial handshake is performed using an ultra-secure 2048-bit RSA key. Once past that awkward first date, SSL communication is usually continued with 128, 192 or 256-bit, as without quantum computers these are practically uncrackable, and they put less stress on the computers encrypting and decrypting at either end.

Most providers are offering 256-bit encryption these days, but that’s only valid when the web server, client computer operating system and browser can all operate at that encryption level.

Old operating systems and browsers can force encryption levels to 40 or 56-bit, even if the certificate they’re accessing is capable of 256-bit.

While you can’t entirely control the client end, the minimum requirement for encryption should be 256-bit at the server end, period.

What makes a good SSL purchase?

There is a temptation to make choices entirely based on cost, especially if you have lots of sites to cover or a dynamic business environment.
Poor decisions can have big cost implications, and changing direction once you have a consumer-facing solution isn’t ideal.

The following factors should play a part in picking the right issuance operation for you:

  • Period of trial - Before anything goes live you’ll want to test it, yes?
  • Browser compatibility - With so many computers still running Windows 7 and even older releases, working with older browsers is still a major concern.
  • Issuance timeframe - When deadlines are in play, time can be critical should a new certificate suddenly be needed
  • Trust level type - The trick is to match the needs of the web location with the level of security and trust needed. If you don’t do financial transactions, then EV level security probably isn’t required. Not all firms offer OV level certificates and some companies try to charge for self-signed, amazingly.
  • Trust site seal - Providing a recognizable seal that the public can see is an easy way to let your customers know that a site is secure and that their information is safe.
  • Support of SSL experts - The subtle nuances of SSL and certification can befuddle even the most astute IT people, so having an SSL support team available is critical.
  • Refund policy - Entering a business relationship assuming it will go sideways isn’t a particularly positive viewpoint, but knowing that your money will come back if needed is a sensible precaution.
  • Warranty policy - Some CAs cover errors in identification, loss of documents or intentional/accidental errors. These warranties might have implications for those companies that self-insure.

Best SEO tools of 2019

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:35 AM PDT

At it's heart SEO (Search Engine Optimization) developed as an extension to web accessibility by following HTML 4 guidelines, in order to better identify the purpose and content of a document.

This meant ensuring that web pages had unique page titles that properly reflected their content, as well as keyword headings to be better highlight the content of individual pages, and that other tags were treated the same accordingly.

This was necessary, not least because web developers were often only focused on whether their coding worked, rather than the user experience, let alone following web publishing guidelines.

This slowly changed as it became increasingly known that search engines used these "on-page" signals to provide their "Search Engine Results Pages" (SERPs) - and that there was an advantage to ranking higher on these to tap into free and natural organic traffic.

The internet has evolved a lot since those early days, and major search engines such as Google now process far more "off page" information when determining their search results, not least by using semantic processing, collating user data, and applying neural networks for the machine learning of patterns, trends, and personal preferences.

Even still, the core ideals of SEO remain the same as they always have - that of ensuring pages have the correct tags for targeting keywords, not just for natural search results, but also for PPC (Pay Per Click) and other marketing campaigns, where call-to-action (CTA) and conversion rates are essential indicators of success.

But how does a business know which keywords to target on its sales pages? How does a website filter transactional traffic from general site visitors? And how can that business increase its ability to capture targeted traffic from across the internet? Here we list a number of tools that will help do exactly that.

Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) is an excellent way for newbie webmasters to get started with SEO. The arsenal of tools includes 'Fetch as Goole', which allows you to view URL's in the same way as Google does. This is a very simple way to detect and troubleshoot poor Search Engine Optimization. You can then modify your page accordingly and even review code to make sure your site has not been hacked.

'PageSpeed Insights' permits you to perform speed checks on desktop and mobile versions of your site. As mobile traffic now consumes a hefty portion of web traffic overall, this is crucial for ensuring mobile visitors access and remain on your pages.

The 'structured data testing tool' is also useful for checking data has been inputted correctly, performing validation routines to check it's in the right format.

Google also very generously offers a free chat with a personal representative via Hangouts. You can make use of this feature during regular office hours for assistance with site issues such as mastering the various tools and detecting malicious activity. Further help is available visit the GWT forum. This is a place for Webmaster's to connect and share troubleshooting and performance tips.

GWT has received the universal praise online with the only criticism being a slight delay between when data is posted and when it is reported.

SEMrush SEO tools was originally developed in 2008 by SEMrush. In 2018, the project received funding of $40 million for expansion.

The keyword research tool is accessible from SEMrush's super elaborate dashboard. You can view detailed keyword analysis reports as well as a summary of any domains you manage.

More crucially, the SEO toolkit allows you to compare the performance of your pages to see how you rank against the competition. For instance, you can analyze backlinks from other websites to yours. (this process is sometimes as 'link building').

Traffic analytics helps to identify your competitors' principle sources of web traffics, such as the top referring sites. This enables you to drill down to the fine details of how both your and your competitors' sites measure up in terms of average session duration and bounce rates. Additionally, "Traffic Sources Comparison" gives you an overview of digital marketing channels for a bunch of rivals at once. For those new to SEO slang 'bounce rates' are the percentage of visitors who visit a website then leave without accessing any other pages on the same site.

The domain overview does much more than provide a summation of your competitors' SEO strategies. You can also detect specific keywords they've targeted as well as access the relative performance of your domains on both desktop and mobile devices.

SEMrush has received many positive mentions online but has been critiqued for use of SEO jargon such as 'SERP' which may alienate inexperienced users. A 'Pro' subscription costs $99.95 (£74.52) per month which includes access to all SEO tools.

SEO Spider was originally created in 2010 by the euphemistically named "Screaming Frog". This rowdy reptile's clients include major players like Disney, Shazam and Dell.

One of the most attractive feature of SEO Spider is its ability to perform a quick search of friendly URL's. SEO best practices dictate that search engines are much more likely to index simple, relevant and human readable URL's over addresses which are a meaningless string of characters, so this feature is a major bonus.

SEO Spider can also crawl your site to check for broken pages. This saves you the trouble of manually clicking each link to rule out '404 errors'.

The tool also allows you to check for pages with missing title tags, duplicated meta tags, tags of the wrong length and any other features which are not in line with the very best SEO practices.

SEO Spider also checks the number of links placed on each page to avoid the poor SEO practice of posting too many on one page. This usually confuses visitors to your site, causing them to go elsewhere and Google also ranks down pages with over 100 'outlinks'.

There is both a free and paid version of SEO Spider. The free version contains most basic features such as crawling redirects but this is limited to 500 URLs. You also can not customize robots.txt and there's no google analytics integration. This makes the 'Lite' version of SEO Spider suitable only for smaller domains. The paid version $180 (£149) per year and includes more advanced features as well as free tech support.

Majestic has consistently received praise from SEO veterans since its inception in 2011. This also makes it one of the oldest SEO tools available today.

The tools main focus is on backlinks, which represent links between one website and another. This has a significant influence on SEO performance and as such, Majestic has a huge amount of backlink data.

Users can search both a 'Fresh Index' which is crawled and updated throughout the day, in addition to an 'Historic Index' which has been praised online for its lightning retrieval speed. One of the most popular features is the 'Majestic Million' which displays a ranking of the top 1 million websites.

The 'Lite' version of Majestic costs $50 (£39.99) per month and incorporates useful features such as a bulk backlink checker, a record of referring domains, IP's and subnets as well as Majestic's integrated 'Site Explorer'. This feature which is designed to give you an overview of your online store has received some negative comments due to looking a little dated. Majestic also has no Google Analytics integration.

Moz.com

Moz.com is a platform of SEO tools that aim to help you increase traffic, rankings, and visibility across search engine results.

Key tools include the ability to audit your own site using the Moz pro spider, which should highlight potential issues and recommend actionable insights. There's also the ability to track your site rankings over hundreds or even thousands of keywords per website.

There's also a keyword research tool to help determine which keywords and keyword combinations may be the best for targeting, and there's also a backlink analysis tool which mixes a combination of metrics including anchor text in links as well as estimated domain authority.

Pricing for Moz Pro begins at $99 (£80) per month for the Standard plan which covers the basic tools. The Medium plan offers a wider range of features for $179 (£150) per month and a free trial is available. Note that plans come with a 20% discount if paid for annually. Additional plans are available for agency and enterprise needs, and there are additional paid-for tools for local listings and STAT data analysis.

Even if you don't sign up to Moz Pro, a number of free tools are available. There's also a huge supporting community ready to offer help, advice, and guidance across the breadth of search marketing issues.

Best free SEO tools

Google Webmaster Tools

Although we've highlighted the best paid-for SEO tools out there, a number of websites offer more limited tools that are free to use. Here we'll look at the free options.

1. Google Search Console

Even if you're not headstrong on SEO, whatever the size of your site or blog, Google's laudable Search Console (formerly Webmaster Central) and the myriad user-friendly tools under its bonnet should be your first port of call. The suite of tools gives you valuable information about your site at a glance: it can assess your site's performance and observe potential problems to troubleshoot (like negative spammy links), help you ensure your site is Google-friendly and monitor Google's indexing of your site.

You can even report spam and request reconsideration if your site has incurred a penalty. Plus, if you don't refer to their Webmaster Guidelines now and again, well, you've only yourself to blame if you go wrong. Search Console is constantly updated, and new features are on the way, such as new URL inspection tool or the new sitemaps report.

2. SEOQuake

SEMRush’s SEOQuake is one of the most popular toolbar extension adored by millions. It allows you to view multiple search engine parameters on the fly and save and compare them with the results obtained for other projects. Although the icons and numbers that SeoQuake yields might be unintelligible to the uninformed user, skilled optimisers will appreciate the wealth of detail this add-on provides.

Gauge details about number of visitors and their country, get a site's traffic history trended on a graph, and more. The toolbar includes buttons for a site's Google index update, backlinks, SEMRush ranking, Facebook likes, Bing index, Alexa ranks, web archive age and a link to the Whois page. There’s also a useful cheat sheet and diagnostics page to have a bird’s view of potential issues (or opportunities) affecting a particular page or site.

3. Google AdWords keyword planner

Knowing the right keywords to target is all-important when priming your web copy. Google's free keyword tool, part of Adwords, couldn't be easier to use. Plug your website URL into the box, start reviewing the suggested keywords and off you go. Jill Whalen, CEO of HighRankings.com is a fan and offers advice to those new to keyword optimisation: "make sure you use those keywords within the content of your website.

It's really a question of being descriptive as keyword phrases typically describe what you offer. Think about the fact that you're trying to answer someone's question at the other end of the search engine. They're typically searching Google because they have a question or a problem to solve. Make your website answer those questions and solve those problems and it will be the one to show in the search results."

4. Google Optimise

Yet another Google tool on that list (not a surprise isn’t it). Optimise is not for the faint hearted and will make even seasoned SEO experts uncomfortable. SEO isn't all about rankings and without the right balance of content that engages with your visitors and drives conversions, you're earnest optimisation could be wasted.

Google’s free service helps take the guesswork out of the game, allowing you to test your site's content: from simple A/B testing of two different pages to comparing a whole combination of elements on any given page. Personalization features are also available to spice things up a bit. Note that in order to run some of the more complicated multivariate testing, you will need adequate traffic and time to make the results actionable, just as you do with Analytics.

5. Live Keyword Analysis

Any seasoned search engine optimisation specialist will tell you keywords matter, and while simply clawing keywords into your text arbitrarily can do more harm than good, it's worth ensuring you have the right balance. Live Keyword Analysis is a breeze to use: simply type in your keywords and then paste in your text and your keyword density analysis will be done on the fly. Don't forget to proof and edit your text accordingly for optimum readability. A must for website copywriters especially as you don’t need to register or pay for anything.

6. Ahrefs

Google's Pagerank algorithm underpins most of what makes the current world wide web work the way it does. Understanding backlinks (sites linking to you) allows website owners and publishers to understand what link opportunities they might be missing out on. Enter Ahrefs, arguably one of the most powerful players out there.

They maintain one of the largest live backlink indexes currently available with 16 trillion known links, covering 200 million root domains. While Ahrefs isn't free, the backlink checker feature is, which provides a useful snapshot that includes your domain rating, the top 100 backlinks, top 5 anchors and top 5 pages, the strict minimum to provide with a feel of what Ahrefs has to offer.

Huawei Watch GT could one day use HarmonyOS

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 08:33 AM PDT

Huawei has unveiled its new operating system, called HarmonyOS, that's designed for a wide variety of products including wearables, cars, laptops and, maybe one day, mobile phones.

TechRadar has now learned that HarmonyOS is built so it can used on other devices that are already out on the market, such as the Huawei Watch GT

Speaking specifically about Huawei's new operating system on the Watch GT, Peter Gauden, Global Senior Product Marketing Manager at Huawei, told TechRadar, "[HarmonyOS] is designed to be able to be utilized on current devices.

"In actual fact, part of the early work that was being done on HarmonyOS was actually also utilizing some elements of LiteOS already."

A potential change

LiteOS is the software currently used on the Huawei Watch GT, a pared back system compared to Wear OS that the company used on its previous smartwatches.

Although Huawei hasn't confirmed it would update its existing smartwatch to the operating system, it would make sense as the company pushes ahead with future devices that sport the OS.

Huawei believes it'll ready to introduce HarmonyOS software to its future smartwatches from 2020, but this is the first time we've heard that the software could be available on other, existing devices.

Earlier this week, a Google spokesperson suggested the Huawei Mate 30 won't be able to use Google's apps thanks to the ongoing Huawei ban, something that could have huge ramifications for the company's future.

If the Huawei ban continues in the US, it seems likely we'll see the company adopt HarmonyOS for its mobile devices as well as upcoming smartwatches as it seeks to provide a decent alternative to Google's Android operating system.

Best blogging platforms of 2019

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 07:45 AM PDT

The popularity of blogging (which originally derives from ‘personal web log’) continues, whether for profit, or just to have a voice on the web, since over a decade ago when it first captured the internet as the ‘next big thing’. Some blogs are standalone sites, but others are a more personal section that fits into a larger, corporate web site.

In order to blog, a blogging platform is required, which takes care of formatting the content in the form of text and images, and provides a framework for getting it onto a website. The blogging platform also makes it easier for a search engine to categorize the blog entries, and to be able to take advantage of marketing and advertising opportunities.

So before you start cranking out posts, and welcoming your virtual visitors from around the world, you need to choose the best blogging platform to suit your needs. Check out these great options.

Blogger

Ask any old-time blogger about what platform they started their blog with, and chances are they'll answer that it was Blogger. To this day, Google’s offering in the blogging space still retains several advantages, including that your existing Google account already means you have a Blogger account.

A broke startup blog will appreciate that it is free to use, and it will even provide the blogspot.com domain name, as well as the option for a custom domain name. It is also one of the easier platforms to use, and provides a choice of templates that can be flexibly modified.

As it is a Google offering, it easily integrates with other Google products, including Google Analytics that can provide information about your website’s visitors that should be used to help grow traffic. Also, your blog can be integrated with Google’s Adsense, that will analyze your content, and display relevant ads to monetize your blog, so you can pay for the coffee as you sit in Starbucks and blog into the night.

With all that going for it, is there any reason not to use Blogger? Well, the problem is that as your blog grows, its simplicity means that you may outgrow Blogger at some point. In addition, it can be difficult to transition from Blogger to another platform.

WordPress

WordPress is a popular blogging platform which is used on a claimed 30% of web sites, that offers an excellent balance between ease of use, and more powerful options.

They can handle all the details, and take care of the domain name, the security and the hosting for a one stop shopping option. WordPress offers hundreds of themes, with flexibility in fonts and options for a custom look. They also offer expert support, and credit card payments can be accepted via an available plugin.

Pricing starts at the Personal plan for $5 (€4.5, £4.1) monthly billed annually, which removes all WordPress advertising. There is also a free tier available, which is suitable for a noncommercial blog as there is WordPress advertising, and no way you can monetize it.

Jekyll

The latest version of Jekyll (4.0.0.) is a “simple, blog-aware, static site generator.” Content gets created in TXT files, which get placed into folders. Then you build your site via Liquid language templates. Jekyll then merges the content and the template together, and voila, a website is generated that can be uploaded to a server. For those that need a host, there is integration with Jekyll to host the website for free on GitHub.

While there is a comprehensive ‘quick-start guide’ on the Jekyll website, it hardly offers the simplicity of some competing blogging platforms that can do this all from a web interface. However, the benefits that Jekyll offers are the advanced features, which include options for paginating posts, available plugins, templates, and community maintained themes. It also supports blog migration from other platforms.

The plus here is that there is no cost to the platform, but the downside is that there is only community support, and the work takes place in the Ruby development environment, so many newbies will be put off.

Tumblr

While some blogs are well developed, and blur the line between a blog, and a full fledged website, at the other end of things we have Tumblr. It seems to be doing something right as it claims a staggering 450+ million different blogs.

It focuses on the more concise end of the spectrum, with an emphasis on shorter content, like just an image, or link, that can appear as more of an alternate social media platform. Content is definitely more short-form, with posts consisting of a variety of material, for example, pics, jokes, quips, Spotify tracks, and video (just remember that adult content is no longer welcome). Like a social media platform, you can also follow other blogs, and republish posts you like to your own blog.

The pro is that Tumblr is quite simple to use, costs nothing, and is ideal for use on a mobile device. However, this is not ideal for a more developed blog, as the content remains in the Tumblr ecosystem, and there is no way to monetize it.

Typepad

Typepad is a fully developed blogging platform, designed for the professional blogger. It offers a ton of flexibility, including the ability to publish from email, a web browser, or mobile. It also easily integrates with Google Analytics, and has its own affiliate plan.

Typepad supports design customization with a Theme Builder for a custom look, and the option for creating your own custom template or modifying a theme with custom CSS. Typepad is also fully hosted, and has support available.

After the initial 14-day trial, plans start at $8.95 (£8) per month for up to four blogs with unlimited storage.

Game of Thrones prequel: Bloodmoon release date, news, and that leaked set photo

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 07:40 AM PDT

It's official: a Game of Thrones prequel is coming to our screens next year, and we can't wait to see what Bloodmoon has in store for us.

After Game of Thrones came to a dramatic end in May, many of us have been left with a Jon Snow-shaped hole in our hearts.

You may not be left craving the return of winter for too long however, with the announcement that a Game of Thrones prequel will air in 2020, with an all-new cast and completely new plot.

Set around 5000 years before the events of GoT, the new series is expected to take place in the Age of Heroes, a period of time that saw the formation of the powerful Houses, and the first time the dreaded White Walkers descended on Westeros.

With a working title of Bloodmoon, the Game of Thrones prequel is a collaboration between George R. R. Martin and screenwriter Jane Goldman.

According to Martin himself, filming for the Game of Thrones prequel has wrapped, and that he hopes to see the first cut by September. Speaking to JOE in August, he said that "Jane Goldman's show has wrapped up in Belfast. I just saw her in London, she's deep in the throes of post-production. I hope to see a cut [of the pilot] probably by early September".

Right now, the prequel is only confirmed for a pilot, so only time will tell whether we get a full series; until then, here’s everything we know about the Game of Thrones prequel Bloodmoon so far, including what appears to be the first leaked photo from the set.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A Game of Thrones prequel, set 5000 years before GoT
  • What’s it called? Still TBC, but the working title is Bloodmoon
  • When will it be released? It’s scheduled for release sometime in 2020

The Game of Throne prequel, which has a working title of Bloodmoon, is set around 5000 years before the events that take place in the original Game of Thrones series.

According to HBO, the new series will “chronicle the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour”.

The synopsis continues: “From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of he White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend, only one things is for sure: it’s not the story we think we know.”

When and where can I watch Bloodmoon?

Currently, we don’t have a firm release date for the Game of Thrones prequel, but we do know that the pilot episode is set to air sometime in 2020.

If you’re in the US, HBO Go will likely be the go-to place to stream Bloodmoon, which will require a HBO subscription.

If you’re outside the US you won’t be able to do this as HBO Go is only supported in the US and “certain US territories”. In the UK, Game of Thrones was available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NowTV – we imagine that the prequel will also appear on these platforms.

In Australia, GoT was available to stream on Foxtel Now; again, the likelihood is that Bloodmoon will be available to stream here, too.

Who is confirmed to be working on Bloodmoon?

The creators of the new series are George R. R. Martin and British screenwriter, Jane Goldman, whose past work includes Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Stardust.

HBO says: “Both will executive produce, alongside SJ Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones, HBO’s Succession and the upcoming Star Trek installment), who will also be directing the pilot episode; James Farrell; Jim Danger Gray; Vince Gerardis; Daniel Zelman and co-executive producer Chris Symes."

We know for sure that the creators of the original series, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, won't be returning; the duo just signed a nine-figure deal with Netflix to exclusively write, direct, and develop new TV series and films for the streaming platform.

Who will star in Bloodmoon?

We know quite a few of the Game of Thrones prequel cast members already, but the most character information we’ve gleaned so far is that Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts “headlines as a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret”.

Photographs of the actress, allegedly in costume for her role in Bloodmoon while filming in Italy, have surfaced on Twitter, having been shared initially by Instagram user kiaruzz91_.

According to HBO, she is joined by Miranda Richardson (Rita Skeeter from the Harry Potter films), Marquis Rodriguez (Manifest), John Simm (Strangers), Richard MCabe (Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams), John Heffernan (Dracula), and Dixie Egerickx (Summerland).

Other confirmed cast members include Josh Whitehouse (Poldark), Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Denise Gough (Monday), Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Sheila Atim (Harlots), Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans), Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia films), Alex Sharp (How to Talk to Girls at Parties) and Toby Regbo (The Last Kingdom, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).

George R. R. Martin has confirmed that Direwolves will make an appearance in the GoT prequel.

Bloodmoon: everything we know so far

From the synopsis released by HBO, we can glean a few details about the Game of Thrones prequel. While we don’t have a firm release date aside from 2020, as well as no guarantee that the pilot will be made into a full series, HBO and George R. R. Martin have given us a few teasers to work with so far:

Westeros is very different place

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, George R. R. Martin confirmed that the Westeros in Bloodmoon will be very different from the one we came to know and love in Game of Thrones. He said:

“Westeros is a very different place. There’s no King’s Landing. There’s no Iron Throne. There are no Targaryens – Valyria has hardly begun to rise yet with its dragons and the great empire that it built. We’re dealing with a different and older world and hopefully that will be part of the fun of the series.”

More recently, Martin revealed that Westeros is divided into “roughly 100 kingdoms in the prequel”, far more than the Seven Kingdoms we’re used to.

Don’t expect Jon Snow to make an appearance

Being set thousands of years before A Song of Ice and Fire, we’re not expecting to see many (if any) characters from the original series. So, if you were hoping for fan favorites like Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, and  Ned Stark to reunite, you’ll likely be disappointed.

That’s not to say that we won’t see any old characters though…

Winter is coming

We know that Bloodmoon will take place during the Age of Heroes, a four thousand-year period in the history of Westeros, which was canonized through myths and songs years later.

While we don’t know exactly when during the Age of Heroes that the new series will take place, we do know of a few key historical events that took place in this time frame.

The most famous of these is the Long Night, in which the White Walkers, led by the Night King, sought to “bring an end to all life and cover the world in an endless winter”, according to Fandom

Of course, the Night King features heavily in the last few seasons of Game of Thrones – could we see a comprehensive White Walker origin story?

Starks, Direwolves, and mammoths… but no dragons

Just because Ned Stark is about 5000 years from being born, doesn’t mean that we won’t see any Starks at all. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin confirmed that “the Starks will definitely be there”, being descended from the First Men.

We’ll also see a return of the beloved Direwolves, as well as a new type of creature to contend with: mammoths.

Die-hard dragon fans will be disappointed though; the prequel reportedly predates dragons entirely.

game of thrones prequel

Don't expect to see any dragons in the Game of Thrones prequel.

Will there be a Game of Thrones sequel?

Apparently not, according to HBO programming president Casey Bloys, who told The Hollywood Reporter that there will absolutely not be a sequel.

This will come as a disappointment to fans who are desperate to learn the fate of Arya Stark, who set off to explore west of Westeros in the series finale.

What to watch in the meantime

If you can't wait for the Game of Thrones prequel, there's a veritable cornucopia of fantastic TV shows you can watch in the meantime.

Craving the bloodthirsty battle scenes that GoT became notorious for? Try Vikings, a historical drama with enough charm and scope to take on Game of Thrones in the sword and sandals stakes.

Based on the sagas of infamous Norse hero Ragnar Lothbrok, all five seasons are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

If you're looking for a hint of magic and mystery (as well as a generous helping of 80s nostalgia), you can't go wrong with Stranger Things on Netflix – there are three seasons to stream right now, although we're banking on a Stranger Things season four release date being announced soon.

Also on Netflix is the Emmy award-winning historical drama The Crown; if you're missing the scandalous affairs and backstabbing of the Lannisters, tune into The Crown season three, which premieres on November 17.

Malicious Android apps hijacked phones to click on ads

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 07:35 AM PDT

Android users have been warned that certain apps may have hijacked their devices to click on malicious ads.

New research from Symantec has shown that cybercriminals are using apps to auto-click on mobile ads to generate a profit.

Two main culprits were identified by the security company, with the compromised apps having been downloaded more than 1.5 million times after going undetected on the Play Store for more than a year.

Hijacked

The malicious apps both come from a developer called Idea Master, one being a notepad app (Idea Note: OCR Text Scanner, GTD, Color Notes) and the other a fitness app (Beauty Fitness: daily workout, best HIIT coach)

Symantec's researchers found that the apps utilise embedded advertisements, which are typically placed strategically beyond the normal viewable area of mobile device’s screen area. This will then initiate an automated ad-click process that stealthily generates revenue for the criminals.

Users affected by the apps may see their device's battery draining far faster than usual, as well as performance of the device slowing down.

Some users have even been stung by an an increase in their mobile data usage due to frequent visits to ad sites, potentially leading to higher than expected bills.

Symantec says the two apps are still present on the Play Store, and has urged any users that have downloaded either program to uninstall it immediately.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro vs Note 7 Pro: What's different?

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 06:54 AM PDT

Xiaomi just unveiled the Redmi Note 8 Pro in China, which is now its latest budget smartphone. It succeeds the Redmi Note 7 Pro launched earlier this year, and brings quite a few upgrades, some of which were previously unseen in this price segment.

The Redmi Note series have been bestsellers in India since a few generations, thanks to its high value for money offerings in the budget segment of India. The Redmi Note 7 Pro was a very successful device that also drove the adoption of 48MP cameras on smartphones. Similarly, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is the world’s first smartphone with a 64MP camera and the new MediaTek G90T chipset. Here are all the differences and upgrades between the Redmi Note 8 Pro and the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Design

Redmi Note 8 Pro

The Redmi Note 7 Pro implements a glass sandwich design with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and the back, with the camera array tucked in the corner. The Redmi Note 8 Pro sticks to the same choice of materials but brings a curved back with cameras placed along the spine of the phone, which is slightly identical to Xiaomi's latest K20-series. Also, the Redmi branding finds itself vertically placed in line with the camera setup.

The fingerprint scanner is also located on the back on both the phones.

Display

The Note 7 Pro has a 6.3-inch LCD panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 which equates to an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The Redmi Note 8 Pro retains that resolution but opts for a bigger 6.53-inch display with a waterdrop notch on the top for the front camera which might be a little bigger than the dot notch on the Note 7 Pro. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5 on both the models.

Considering the slightly bigger display area, the ppi(pixels per inch, the unit for pixel density) drops from 409 to 395, but the difference in sharpness won't be perceivable. As mentioned earlier, the fingerprint scanner is not under the display.

Performance

Processors primarily determine the performance of a smartphone. The Redmi Note 7 Pro has a Snapdragon 675 chipset which was one of the best processors of its time in this price segment. The Redmi Note 8 Pro opts for a 12nm gaming-centric MediaTek Helio G90T chipset which is expected to bring a great gaming experience. The last time we saw a MediaTek SoC powering a Redmi Note device was  in 2015 with the Note 2.

That is paired with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, instead of starting at 4GB as the predecessor did.

Camera

Redmi Note 8 Pro cameras

48MP cameras were all the rage in the first half of 2019 and the Note 7 Pro was one of the most popular devices to bring it to the masses. However, the other camera was a modest 5MP depth sensor.

With the Redmi Note 8 Pro, Xiaomi has brought one of the most versatile camera packages seen in this segment, with a quad-camera arrangement. The primary camera is a 64MP f/1.8 sensor with PDAF, along with an 8MP ultrawide lens with a 13mm focal length, a 2MP macro lens and another 2MP depth sensor. The front camera also gets a bump up to 20MP from 13MP.

The 64MP Samsung Bright ISOCELL GW1 image sensor is expected to make an appearance in a lot more smartphones coming later this year such as the Realme XT.

Battery and Charging

The Redmi Note series has always been known to offer big batteries. The Note 7 Pro shipped with a respectable 4,000 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. Ever since the Redmi Note 3, Xiaomi had been offering a battery this size, but with the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it has finally moved an even bigger 4,500 mAh battery that supports 18W Quick Charge 4+, over USB Type-C.

Both the phones retain the 3.5mm headphone jack, and the Note 8 also adds NFC. Storage, too, is expandable on both the devices via the hybrid SIM slot.

Price in India

The Redmi Note 7 Pro starts at Rs 13,999 for the 4 + 64GB variant in India, and goes up to Rs 16,999 for the top 6 + 128GB model. The Redmi Note 8 Pro will come to India in October, but the Chinese pricing indicates a very similar price point. The 6 + 64GB variant is priced at 1,399 yuan which converts to about Rs 14,000 and goes up to 1,799 yuan for the 8 + 128GB model.

Here are the best retro console revivals

Posted: 30 Aug 2019 06:30 AM PDT

When it comes to gaming, the past was a simpler time. You bought your console, paid for your games, and then you sat down and played them.

No online multiplayer, no downloadable content, no guides to spoil all the fun, and no patches to get in the way of you playing. Sounds nice, doesn't it?

Over the years, several companies have attempted to bring this simplicity back with a variety of retro console revivals.

These boxes plug into the back of your TV, and use emulation software to allow you to play a number of games that would otherwise be impossible (or at least, very expensive) to find as a physical cartridges.

Here are our top picks of the best boxes to have revived these retro consoles and their classic games.

UPDATE: We've added both the SNES Classic Mini and PlayStation Classic to our list of the best retro games consoles. Click through the guide to find out which could take you on a delightful trip down memory lane and which is best to leave in the past.

Following the massive success of the NES Classic Mini, Nintendo has returned to its 90s days in a more compact form with the SNES Classic Mini.

The box plugs into your TV via HDMI and comes with 21 pre-loaded games (one of which is the unreleased Star Fox 2!) as well as two mini controllers that will allow you to take advantage of multiplayer.

The drawback of Nintendo's retro consoles is that once you've exhausted the fairly limited library you won't be able to play anything else - the console doesn't accept the original cartridges, nor does it let you download more content.

Nintendo is going back to the start of its gaming conquest with the NES Classic Edition, a compact version of its iconic 80s console.

The box plus into your TV via HDMI and comes with 30 built-in games and a mini NES controller.

The bad news is that once you've exhausted that library you won't be able to play anything else - the console doesn't accept the original cartridges, nor does it let you download more content.

Still, for US$59.99/AU$99.95 (around £45) it's a nice nostalgic proposition, and one we'll be picking up when it rolls around on November 11.

The ZX Spectrum was one of the first mainstream home computers to come out when it was released in the UK in 1982.

It was to the UK what the Commodore 64 was in the US, a trojan horse for getting computers into homes, and a device that would inspire a generation of coders.

Yes, its keyboard was a bit of a mushy rubber mess, but with a software library that contained classics such as the original Elite, Football Manager, and Manic Miner, you can't exactly fault the little console that could.

The Sinclair ZX Spectrum Vega looks nothing like the original console. Rather than having a full QWERTY keyboard, the console is instead packed completely into a controller which has 1,000 games built-in.

The device is available now for £99.99 (around $130), but the manufacturer Retro Computers has recently completed an IndieGoGo campaign to fit the console into a handheld form factor.

Everyone remembers the Mega Drive (or the Genesis as it was known in North America). Acting as Sega's competitor to Nintendo's SNES, the console was home to such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Earthworm Jim.

Unlike some of the other hardware on this list, the console, which is manufactured by Chinese firm At Games, will play any original Mega Drive cartridges that you have lying around.

Don't worry if you've not got any old cartridges lying around though, since the console comes with 80 game pre-installed, including Mortal Kombat and Golden Axe.

Also unlike the original Mega Drive, the new console supports wireless controllers so you don't have to worry about the mess of controller cables that used to plague console gamers.

The console is available in a console and handheld configuration, which will both be available this October for $65/£49.99.

Whereas other consoles on this list consist of completely custom designed hardware, the Vectrex Regeneration is slightly different since it's first and foremost an iPad app.

Simply download the app onto an iPad, and such classics as Cosmic Chasm, Fortress of Narzod and...Solar Quest?

Ok we're less sold on the games, but if you combine the app with an iCade iPad housing things get a lot more interesting. Simply connect your iPad to the cabinet via bluetooth, slot it in place, and have fun playing games as they were originally intended with arcade controls in a box that closely resembles the form-factor of the original console.

The app itself is available for iOS for $2.99/£2.29, but unfortunately the iCade cabinet appears to be a little harder to come by Amazon US is selling the cabinet new for $195 and Amazon UK has them for £59.99.

It might not be as portable as other handhelds, but the SupaBoy gives you a SNES you can take on the go.

It even goes one better than the NES Classic Edition by accepting original SNES and Super Famicom cartridges.

Other than the 3.5-inch LCD screen, the SupaBoy is designed to look just like the original SNES pad, while the two front ports are compatible with SNES controllers if two of you fancy playing on it like a regular TV.

The length of the rechargeable battery seems to vary a bit, but you'll be looking at close to the four hour mark.

While the handheld's form factor seems convenient, it's unlikely to be of much use to anyone without some old SNES cartridges lying around. Since the SupaBoy is unlicensed, Hyperkin is unable to include any games as built-in software.

So it's appeal might be limited, but if you do happen to have a couple of cartridges lying around then you could do a lot worse than trying out the SupaBoy, which can be found on various auction sites for around $80 (£60).

The PlayStation Classic console is certainly fun, but we feel like it's missing a trick. Sony could’ve followed in Nintendo’s footsteps by releasing a populist's retro console, one that had the undisputed best games of the era like Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy 8 and 9 or Tomb Raider.

But that's not the PlayStation Classic.

It doesn’t include the majority of the console’s greatest hits and instead opts for some cult classics like Persona and Jumping Flash among a few well-received titles. Using Sony’s retro console is therefore a lot less like walking down memory lane, an experience we had with the SNES Classic and NES Classic Mini, and a lot more like a sample platter of what the PlayStation had to offer 20-some-odd years ago.

Of course, some people might develop a real attachment to games like Destruction Derby, Ridge Racer Type 4 and Intelligent Qube - and if that's you, then the PlayStation Classic is going to be everything you've ever wanted in a retro console.

If not, however, then you'll be disappointed with the game selection, unimpressed by the lackluster interface and forced to watch, often in horror, as late '90s FMVs are brought to life like Frankenstein's Monster on your 4K or 1080p TV.
