iOS and Android games grossing more than Sony and Nintendo Posted: Game sales for Android and iOS devices now generate more revenue than those for the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS series, according to new projections. Flurry expects mobile and tablet games to own 58 per cent of the market and gross $1.9 billion by the end of 2011, while the combined total of Sony and Nintendo sales are likely to amount $1.4 billion. If the analytics firm's predictions hold true, it'll be the first time that Apple and Android games have brought in more cash than the old stalwarts of the handheld gaming industry. In 2009 Apple and Google controlled just 19 per cent of the market, while the DS had a whopping 70 per cent, while the already-fading PSP had an 11 per cent share. Big name troublesOf course both Nintendo and Sony have endured troubled times in the handheld arena over the last couple of years. Nintendo's new 3DS has enjoyed a less than fruitful first six months on the market, while Sony has virtually given up on the PSP and PSP Go with the PS Vita set to arrive in early 2012. However, both companies face an uphill struggle as gamers continue to gravitate to much cheaper, often much simpler titles that are instantly downloadable to phones and tablets. |
Eric Schmidt: Android started before iPhone Posted: Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt has subtley refuted the late Steve Jobs' claim that Android is a product 'stolen' from Apple. The former Google CEO, who has been a little more loose-lipped since leaving the CEO's chair, was responding to comments Jobs made to his official biographer before he passed away last month. Jobs had told Walter Isaacson that "Our lawsuit is saying, 'Google you f***ing ripped off the iPhone, wholesale ripped us off," speaking of writs Apple issued against leading Android handset manufacturers. The Apple co-founder had vowed to spend every penny Apple had in the bank in order to destory Android, saying he was willing to go "thermo-nuclear war" on the search giant. Google a great innovatorHowever, speaking to reporters in South Korea, Schmidt has asserted that his company came up with the idea to create a smartphone ecosystem before the iPhone came into being. "I've decided not to comment on what's been written on a book after his death," he said. "Steve is a fantastic human being and someone who I miss very dearly. "As a general comment, I think most people would agree that Google is a great innovator and I would also point out that the Android effort started before the iPhone effort." Schmidt and Jobs, long-time pals, famously had a massive bust-up in 2006 when Jobs discovered Google's plans to launch the Android software. Schmidt is wise not to go in too heavy here, with Jobs not around to respond any more, but his assertion is sure to stir the pot once again. |
