American Airlines pilots to use iPads in-flight Posted: The Federal Aviation Agency have reportedly approved American Airlines' request to equip its pilots with iPad. AA's finest flyers will begin using Apple tablets 'in all phases of flights' from this Friday, according to a report from ZDNet. The iPads will come loaded with flight manuals and electronic charts, replacing the masses of paper manuals pilots currently have to sift through. The weight saving alone will supposedly save American Airlines $1.2 million a year in fuel and could improve on-board safety by offering an easier to use point of reference for pilots. Culminates a six month testA source told the site: "By using electronic charts and manuals, the safety and efficiency on the flight deck is significantly enhanced. Both the iPad 1 and the iPad 2 have been approved for use. "Other airlines such as United, Alaska, and UPS are also reviewing this potential, but none have been approved to conduct flight operations in all phases of flight except American. "This FAA approval cumulates the results from a 6 month test period whereby American flew thousands of hours with iPads to test and evaluate the product." |
Apple 'in talks' to buy flash memory firm Anobit Posted: Apple is looking to expand into the flash memory market, with reports that it is digging deep and shelling out up to $500 million for technology firm Anobit. Anobit knows quite a bit about flash storage – it is at the forefront of the chip technology that enhances flash drive performance and its tech is already used in many of Apple's products, including the iPhone, iPad and the MacBook Air. Flash focusIt is rare for Apple to buy up a hardware firm, as its usual focus is on snaffling software manufacturers that can improve on Apple's own OS, so if the deal were to go through it would be one of the biggest ever for the company. Anobit is a hardware company based in Israel with around 200 employees and the deal is thought to be handled by Pitango Venture Capital, the firm which was responsible for selling video search engine Video Surf to Microsoft in November. |
Apple iOS 5.1 Beta 2 improves Photo Stream Posted: Apple has seeded the second Beta of iOS 5.1 to developers with the latest version allowing users to delete individual pictures from Photo Stream. Photo Stream, which is part of Apple's iCloud facility, backs up photos taken using the cameras of iOS devices and makes the feed viewable on other Apple tech. However, in the present version of iOS5, once a photo is synced to Photo Stream it is impossible to delete it from the stream without unsyncing the entire library The new version corrects what many iOS device owners have considered an annoying flaw. No notable additionsAside from the changes to Photo Stream there doesn't appear to be any other notable additions to the Beta update. iOS 5.1 is not yet available to the public and may go through more Beta versions before it goes live to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. |
