Apple's slender new iMac release date: November 30

The new iMac will go on sale on November 30, with Apple promising that the computers will ship in December for an iMac Christmas.

The 21.5-inch iMac will be available online and in high street shops from Friday, while the 27-inch edition is only going on sale online - so don't bother queuing for that one.

If you'd all but forgotten about the new iMac, we'd forgive you – it was announced at Apple's October event and immediately overshadowed by the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, not to mention the small matter of the iPad mini and surprise iPad 4.

Mini iMac

But of the October haul, the new iMac is the last to go on sale (except for the cellular version of the iPad mini which is still MIA).

Apple's usual hype-tastic marketing speak promises a lot from its new iMac that comes in at only 5mm thick at its slimmest point.

The new iMacs come with Fusion Drive, the snappily named dual drive set up that allows your computer to manage files 'intelligently' and speed everything up.

There's also 8GB of 1600MHz memory, a 1TB hard drive and Intel Core i5 processing going on, with the option to upgrade to i7 if you fancy it.

Pricing's a bit of a minefield, but the 21.5-inch iMac starts at £1,099 or $1,299, while the 27-inch kicks off from £1,499 or $1799.

Apple's yearly profits eclipse the entire PC industry

Apple's yearly profits eclipse the entire PC industry

New statistics have put Apple's astonishing financial performance over the last twelve months into perspective.

Despite missing lofty Wall Street expectations for two quarters in a row, Apple still racked up incredible profits of $41.9 billion (UK£26.2, AUD$39.9) over the course of the last four quarters.

According to figures from Statista, that's around $7 billion (UK£4.3, AUD$6.7) more than the combined net profit of Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Yahoo and eBay.

More telling still; Apple's tally is more than double the combined $19.4 billion (UK£12.1, AUD$18.5) earned by computing giants Intel, IBM, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, HP and Dell.

In basic terms, that makes Apple twice as profitable as the entire PC industry.

Mobile masters

When Statista, which gained its information from official company filings, compares Apple with some of its key smartphone and tablet rivals, the difference is starker still.

Samsung has enjoyed a barnstorming last twelve months, but when its profits are combined with fellow mobile companies RIM, HTC, and Nokia, the total is just over a quarter of Apple's yearly earnings - $12.8 billion (UK£8, AUD$12.2).

The remarkable figures come amid much negativity around Apple's performance in the stock market over the last couple of months, mainly due to it not selling quite as many iPads as Wall Street expected.

Facebook Gifts now offering iTunes cards

Facebook Gifts now offering iTunes cards

Facebook and Apple have teamed up to offer digital iTunes vouchers through the social network's Gifts feature.

Facebook Gifts, which is being trialled in the U.S., allows people to buy presents for their pals on occasions like birthdays and engagements, or for whenever they're feeling particularly generous.

Users can click the gift icon on a friend's Timeline, or underneath the birthday announcements in their news feed, to get started, before picking out a gift from a host of options.

On its official newsroom blog, Facebook said the iTunes gift cards are ideal for friends wishing to share movie and music recommendations as it would give the recipient a way to act upon the tip.

Apple and Facebook: BFFs?

The post read: "Starting today with Facebook Gifts, you can instantly gift your friends iTunes digital gifts and recommend albums, movies, games, apps, and more available on the iTunes Store."

Facebook users can purchase iTunes vouchers worth up to $50 (UK£31, AUD$47) and friends can redeem the voucher code through an iTunes account as soon as they receive a notification.

The link comes as ties between Apple and Facebook slowly become closer.

The pair had endured a frosty relationship in recent years, but patched things up when Apple launched iOS 6 with deep Facebook integration.

The social network has vowed to launch the Gifts initiative in countries outside the U.S. "soon."
