iPad 5 production to kick off in July-August?

As is the way with Apple rumours, we'd advise you add this to the "needs salt" list, but production of the iPad 5 will reportedly begin in the July-August period this year.

At least, this is what comes from sources from Taiwanese supply chain makers, who passed word on to rumour-mongerer supreme DigiTimes.

The sources also had something to say on what the updated might actually look like. Thinner and lighter than the fourth generation apparently.

Plus a slim bezel design, much like that seen on the iPad mini. This is something we've been expecting, so it doesn't come as any huge surprise.

LG Display and Sharp will be supplying the 9.7-inch displays for the new tablet, while the touch panel assembly will be done by TPK

We'd previously heard rumours of the next iPad being announced back in March. Then it was April. And now it looks like that date can be pushed further back in the diary.

Apple did, after all, shake up the usual release calendar by unveiling the fourth generation iPad just months after the third, making the schedule more difficult to predict. Though if this turns out to be true, we'd put money on another October unveil.

DigiTimes has been pretty hit and miss in the past so, once again, don't take this one as gospel.

Apple's procrastination on Mac Pro might end before April is up

Apple's procrastination on Mac Pro might end before April is up

It's been a long time - almost 1,000 days to be exact - since the last worthwhile Mac Pro update.

However, that could change this month...or the next...or the next. It very much depends on Apple's timing, but a new report suggests that a Mac Pro "replacement" is indeed in the offing.

According to Mac Daily News, a new member of the Pro family will likely have an April reveal, though warns not to be surprised if the announcement slips into May or June.

The site's source couldn't say whether this replacement will be a tower, mini-tower or something else, only that a refresh to the lineup could come soon. This tipster is said to have been right about Apple product announcements in the past, but Daily News still categorized the latest as a rumor.

About time

Besides stalling on a significant update, Apple also has a sales problem in Europe. Not that the workstation comp isn't selling well - it isn't selling at all since a ban went into effect earlier this year.

Regulatory requirements dealing with unprotected fan blades put the ax on Pro sales, so Apple has more than enough incentive to come out with a new model to meet European demand.

What's more, the Cupertino company also reportedly told resellers on the continent it would have a new model and not simply a minor update ready to go by spring 2013.

Apple has until June 21 to make good on that promise.

Intel announces new Thunderbolt tech, now twice as fast with 4K support

The latest version of Intel's Thunderbolt input/output technology can transfer data at speeds of 20Gbps, in both directions, making it twice as fast as current versions of the tech.

The technology was introduced in 2011 as a data transfer rival to USB 3.0, allowing users to quickly transfer files between peripherals and computers, such as Apple's MacBook line on which it features prominently.

Presenting at the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas, the company said the new tech will also support 4K video transfer and display when it starts to appear in products next year.

The advanced speeds mean that 4K video could be played back on a connected display, while simultaneously sending the file to storage devices at 20Gbps.

4K Macs?

This could eventually encourage the likes of Apple, a big Thunderbolt supporter, to consider building iMacs, MacBooks or external displays compatible with the Ultra HD resolution.

It also opens the door for more recent proponents of the tech, like HP, Asus and Lenovo to do the same.

The new version of the technology will be also be compatible with current-generation Thunderbolt cables and connectors. Intel said it plans to ramp up full production in 2014.

During its presentation Intel said it wasn't planning to stop at 20Gbps. By 2015, it says Thunderbolt will be running at 50Gbps, five times faster than current 10Gbps Thunderbolt connectivity.
