Updated: 75 best free PC software downloads from Microsoft

Everyone knows Microsoft for its Windows OS and Office productivity suite. But the software giant makes plenty of other apps, many of which are entirely free to download and use. In fact, there's a ton of them.

When we started counting up all the best free Microsoft apps, we thought we'd find 20 or 30. In the end, we found a lot more. And because this is Microsoft, these apps aren't just okay, they're good. Great, even.

There's a free program or service for just about every aspect of PC use, from headline-grabbers such as Windows Essentials and Microsoft Office Web Apps, to smaller but no less useful tools such as Microsoft Autoruns, Security Essentials and Desktops.

It's not just about work, either; Microsoft is responsible for lots of apps that are enjoyable and fun to use. See through the eyes of the world's telescopes, play a game or two or - better still - create your own with Kodu Game Lab. The list just keeps on growing.

Some of the programs here are unfinished, and clearly marked as such. That means there's a chance you may run into problems using them - nothing major, but take a System Restore point before you proceed, just in case.

We also recommend you don't attempt to install every program in this list in one go; you'll quickly bring your computer to its knees. Instead, pick out tools that excite you and give them a try.

With the Windows Essentials apps, you can choose the ones you want when you download the Windows Essentials installer program. So, what are you waiting for? You're about to make your PC more efficient, secure and fun without spending a thing.

It works in a similar way to Dropbox to keep files backed up and synced across all your PCs and Macs, plus give you access to your files from a smartphone, tablet or any web browser.

Like Dropbox you need to keep everything stored in a single OneDrive folder, but you can place this where you like and use shortcuts and libraries to link in files from all over your hard drive. If you're not running Windows 8.1, you can also choose which folders to keep in sync on specific computers too.

OneDrive is reasonably robust, doesn't produce too many file conflicts and comes with 7GB of free storage (with the ability to earn up to 8GB more through referrals and switching on Camera Backup for your mobile) – that's more than other similar services." Upgrades are cheap too, with prices starting at just £16 (about $106, AU$119) per year for an additional 50GB of space.

67. Process Explorer

Task Manager gets better with each Windows release, but it's still a little lacking. If you need to peek behind the programs running on your PC – particularly those unhelpful svchost.exe processes – to see what's really locking that file or grinding your system to a halt, then Process Explorer is the tool you need. Fire it up to discover exactly what's going on behind the scenes, and then take remedial steps to tackle it.

68. Windows Defender Offline

Windows Defender Offline

Not all malware infections can be dealt with in Windows – sometimes you need to boot to a clean environment to get rid. Windows Defender Offline needs to be run on a clean PC, then you follow the wizard to download the latest virus updates before burning it to a CD or creating a bootable USB flash drive.

Pop this into the afflicted machine, then boot from it to see if it has more joy removing stubborn infections. Make sure you recreate the disc or flash drive each time you need it – otherwise you won't have access to the latest security definitions.

69. Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit 4.1

If you have an old program that you know is a security risk, but you can't live without it, then the EMET tool may be able to help. It's designed to make it harder for hackers to exploit known security holes before they're patched, but will offer additional protection even if your favourite app hasn't been updated for years.

It's not guaranteed to work with all apps, but you can easily switch it off for incompatible apps while leaving it on to protect the rest of your system.

70. NewsPad Editor

NewsPad is a basically a community-focused collaborative blogging tool, encouraging you and some likeminded fellows to work together to create a single news story, or pad. It's geared towards list-based stories, with everybody able to contribute at once, either writing (or editing) text, or adding photos, tweets and more. It can be embedded into another website, and used for documenting a recent event or even providing live updates to an ongoing story.

71. Socl

Socl – pronounced "social" apparently – is Microsoft's attempt to take on the likes of Pinterest by letting you post all kinds of media-friendly content, from collages (collections of photos, links and video – either web-hosted or uploaded to Socl) to video parties (set up a band playlist and invite others to contribute). It also supports Blink, apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone that allow you to capture, create and share short video clips.

72. ChronoZoom

ChronoZoom

This is an open source project that aims to visualise all of history from the Big Bang right up to the present via a gigantic timeline, primarily for educational purposes. ChronoZoom is run directly from your web browser and lets you browse featured timelines such as the history of Chile or the evolution of vertebrates.

Alternatively, just dive in and browse by topic: Cosmos, Earth, Life, Prehistory and Humanity. Selecting one zooms into the timeline for that period – look out for thumbnails that include media and information about a specific event, or provide context for a point in history.

73. Cliplets

Cliplets

Capturing a specific moment in time is rarely satisfactory. Cliplets attempts to bridge the gap between a static photo and unsatisfactory video clip by combining the two. It basically allows you to focus in on a specific part of a video clip, which remains animated, while all the distracting clutter around it is held in freeze-frame.

Simply load in a clip, select 10 seconds of it, then build layers containing still images and the selected object you wish to animate. The result is a looped clip that wouldn't look out of place in the pages of Harry Potter's Daily Prophet newspaper.

74. Windows Upgrade Assistant

Planning on upgrading your PC to Windows 8 or 8.1? Before taking the plunge, install the Windows Upgrade Assistant – choose the 8.1 version if you're running Windows 7, or the Windows 8 version if you're still on Vista or XP. This will scan your PC and reveal any incompatibilities – software and hardware – you'll need to address before making the switch.

If you're planning to upgrade to Windows 7, install the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor instead.

Industry voice: How speed search can bring the full value of video to enterprises

Video usage as a communications tool is on the rise and firms are amassing more and more knowledge and valuable content on video. The concept of a 'Corporate YouTube' has become a reality and this is about to change the way we search for and consume content while at work.

Yet, how easy is it to find this valuable content once it has been created, already viewed and archived? Not just the particular video you are looking for but the specific, spoken content within a video. Tagging and metadata is helpful yet time consuming and it is often not specific enough for an accurate search.

Imagine being able to find your favourite videos with simple key phrases or comments you heard, no matter what device you are on, be it mobile or not. Whether it is a conference, webinar, expert video or just any general 'How To' video you really liked, a speech search functionality can help you find that specific video instantly. Now let me take that context within the workplace.

A video platform which offers speech search functionality provides the technology to index the audio of all videos within a large media library and allows for any word or sentence to be searched – across thousands of hours. A phonetic search will deliver accurate results across different speakers, accents and across recordings of varying degrees of quality. This reduces the time it takes for users to not only find the particular video they are looking for but it also makes it possible for them to search for key words so that they can ultimately locate the precise section of the video containing the data they need.

Speech search can dramatically improve the way you look for information within a video and removes completely the task of combing through whole, long videos leaving you more time to focus on the business and on the task of learning and digesting the content.

A wholesome speech search technology should feature phonemes analysis instead of words for increased accuracy over speech to text methods. It should also allow for proper names and slang recognition to prevent individual accents to cause any confusion.

Key elements should be the capability to quickly preview results without the need to scroll through hour-long clips just to find a 1- minute topic but also the presence of confidence scores to allow you to focus only on the closest matches or to broaden your search for the inclusion of subtle variations.

Language packs should be installed to allow for multiple language search and there should also be the option to search not only single videos but series of videos so that dialogues can be found on top of spoken words.

Last but not least, speech search should be linearly scalable to support even the largest video libraries with full redundancy.

A speech search functionality can benefit organisations by making it possible for knowledge to be found – and therefore absorbed – fast but also by helping to keep content secure, managed and monitored.
In conclusion, what might in the past have taken hours of video library searching, watching and listening to find, now takes only minutes. If it is spoken, you can find it via speech search quickly and accurately.
