Started in the mid 90s, people's love affair with downloading files - from movies and MP3s to torrents and applications - is as strong as it ever was, and with increasingly fast broadband and mobile connectivity, more data is being downloaded to hard drives than at any point in history. Internet download managers have existed for almost as long as the Internet has been around, and have similarly evolved over time. Their primary goal is still to help you with downloading large or multiple files, but many now come with extra functionality that supercharges the process - from splitting files into separate partitions to help land them onto your hard drive quicker to converting them to other file formats to be played on other devices. A common misconception is that downloading is all about illegal activity. It isn't - there are many legitimate reasons to fire up an internet download manager - such as wanting to grab a file that you've uploaded yourself after you've lost the original copy. Or you might be downloading creative works, or open source material that has been made available by the author. Here are five of the best internet download managers. Download Accelerator Plus is a tool that helps you speed up your internet downloads by searching servers on the internet to find the file, or files that you're download. By locating and requesting it from multiple sources at the same time, it can find the quickest route from its location to your computer's hard drive, landing it much quicker than if it was downloaded from a single server.
This works best when used to look for files that may be commonly available in multiple locations - such as anti-virus programs, operating system utilities and other executable files that have been made available by their creators. Other handy extras featured in the program include automatic captcha recognition, allowing you to bypass the common (and irritating) security mechanism, and you can even set up your downloads workflow to automatically move downloaded files into various folders based on their filename, allowing you to keep organised with minimal effort. Note that you'll need to download Java Runtime to get it to work, and the program is still BETA, so bear in mind that it's not the finished product. 3. Free Download Manager
Torrents have something of a reputation when it comes to illegal content, with owners of website such as The Pirate Bay appearing in headlines for being commanded to the dock for allowing its users to share copyrighted content. But there are numerous legitimate reasons to use torrents too, and if you're looking to get involved, Free Download Manger combines the best bits of regular download managers with torrent downloading programs.
Free Download Manager allows you to start downloads directly from the BitTorrent network or by clicking on torrents hosted on other sites, in addition to being able to download files over the regular HTTP, HTTPS and FTP protocols. The program's makers claim they have managed to increase the tool's speed by up to 600% in the most recent version, which now has the ability to continue previously cancelled downloads. With a slew of other features including the ability to convert audio and video into different file formats, Free Download Manager aims to be a one-stop shop for downloading a multitude of files from a wide range of online locations. 4. YouTube Downloader
YouTube Downloader is a hassle-free way of ripping YouTube videos to your hard disk drive, with the option to convert files into multiple different formats. It may have YouTube in its name, but it also works with a multitude of other video websites - from DailyMotion to Facebook.
The use of a tool like Free YouTube Downloader is necessary as many video websites stream video in the Flash format, which tends not to be compatible with smartphones, tablets and other devices. | Microsoft's new hyperlapse algorithm could end jittery GoPro videos forever Posted:  First-person videos have become a norm thanks to head-mounted cameras like the Go Pro and Google Glass. It's a great way to capture action; the only problem is this same footage is often so shaky it turns into a nausea-inducing mess. Now software engineers at Microsoft Research have developed an algorithm that converts first-person footage into a smooth hyperlapse no matter how jerky the original recording. The resulting video removes any errant shakes, head bobs and other stray movements for a much smoother viewing experience. Microsoft demonstrated the robustness of its algorithm by converting a bike ride into what looks like a flying hyperlapse. Meanwhile, the same process turns a mountain climb into a silky pan across a cliff side. Buttery smoothThe hyperlapse method essentially looks at the footage to create a 3D path based on how the camera-wearers were moving in a scene. The algorithm uses this information to trace a smooth path while stitching together multiple images into new frames along this stabilized trajectory. The footage isn't perfect. From the few clips we can see some obvious artifacts including one rock climber appearing in one frame to miraculously disappear in the second. The way images are stitched together also causes details to suddenly appear in an unnatural way. However, as head-mounted recording gadgets seem like an inevitable part our wearables future, Microsoft's algorithm could lead to much smoother video first-person videos. For now Microsoft's hyperlapse tool only exists as a research project, but the group is working hard to release a Windows app. We can only hope it comes out soon. |
| Cortana may have a prominent seat at the Windows 9 table Posted:  Microsoft is planning to integrate Cortana - the voice-powered digital assistant from Windows Phone 8.1 - within its next major desktop OS release, according to reports on Monday. Following earlier word from Neowin claiming the Cortana is 'up and running' inside of Windows 9 test builds, the site now says it is operational and performance on desktop is improving. Neowin also claims the tool is being targeted for the final release of Windows 9 (currently codenamed Windows Threshold), expected in spring 2015. The reports are corroborated by The Verge, whose sources claim the tool is gradually getting better every couple of weeks along its journey to an eventual roll out within Windows 9. Simple app?So what form will Cortana take within Windows 9? Well Neowin says it is a "simple app that opens up the personal digital assistant where you can then either type in your question or ask verbally inside a smallish window. It's not a full-screen experience like you see on Windows Phone." However, it's clear that could alter significantly between now and Windows 9's release date. Microsoft is expected to launch a preview release before 2014 is out. The reports follow speculation earlier this month hinting that Siri may make the move from iOS to the Mac OS X desktop software, based on an Apple patent filing from 2012. | Signs point to Steam offering TV shows, movies and music next Posted:  Valve has previously said it wants to expand its virtual Steam store to include movies, TV and music. Now the company has taken its first step towards offering up more entertainment mediums. Steam Database spotted some newly added app updates in the latest beta release of Steam. A few of the new application-type IDs include films, TV series, videos, plugins and music. There isn't actually any content for these new types of apps yet. But the fact that they've been added could mean Valve has started moving towards distributing this kind of content. In February, Valve stealthy updated SteamOS with a new music player. However, the feature was very limited in that it only let users playback tunes already in their local library. Into the breachValve has been moving towards becoming a part of the living room since it introduced Big Picture mode in September 2012. Now with its current plans to release Steam Machines in 2015, Valve still has a long way to develop a complete ecosystem. When the SteamOS boxes finally come out they will be competing with both consoles and set-top boxes like the Roku 3 and Apple TV. So far there is only a very limited set of media options on Steam including Indie Game: The Movie and another documentary titled Free to Play. Steam will need a much more expansive media library to match the likes of Apple iTunes Store and Google Play. |
