For now, Samsung is still holding strong thanks to its talent for blending features, high specs, and a great design alongside some stunning cameras in its new S10 line. But given the advancements coming from competing Google Pixel and Huawei phones, the roster of best Android smartphones will keep getting more interesting. While the Samsung Galaxy S series has only made incremental improvements in recent years, the Galaxy S10 Plus makes a bit more of a substantial leap ahead with new features and an even sleeker look. While the other models in the series have their advantages, the S10 Plus is simply the best of the best – top specs, an expanded camera suite and some shiny new tricks. The Snapdragon 855 at the phone's core competes with the Apple A12 for the fastest chip you can get in phones, and the 8GB RAM makes browsing and gaming speedy. The baseline 128GB of storage is great, but you can also pick up the phone with 512GB – or even 1TB, if you pay for the premium ceramic-backed version (which boosts the RAM to 12GB). If that's not enough, storage can be boosted by 512GB via microSD, bumping potential storage to 1.5TB...whoever should need it. The phone has few drawbacks, with a huge 6.4-inch screen in the smallest frame we've seen thanks to a 93% screen-to-body ratio. The in-screen fingerprint sensor is cool, the ability to wirelessly charge other devices using the new Wireless PowerShare feature is even cooler, and we just love the clean look of the phone. If you hate the smartphone notch, you can still get the best smartphone camera without it. Google’s Pixel 3 comes in smaller and more affordable than its bigger sibling, but it offers the same best-in-class camera performance. The design of the Pixel 3 isn’t quite up to par with the rest of the new flagships from 2018, as it has sizable bezels above and below the screen. It fits a 5.5-inch display with a resolution slightly above Full HD. Though it’s not winning any contests for its looks, the internals are up to the task, with a Snapdragon 845 and 4GB of RAM to power through most tasks quickly. The Samsung Galaxy S10e is essentially the iPhone XR for Android: flagship specs at a lower price, with a few features shaved off to cut costs. And yet, the S10e is less of a compromise. It retains an AMOLED display (the XR's is LCD), starts at 6GB of RAM and packs a second ultrawide rear camera to the XR's single wide lens. There are several things the S10e lacks compared to its pricier siblings, but nothing you'll terribly miss: its side-mounted sensor is still more reliable than the in-screen fingerprint sensor on the S10 and S10 Plus. The 2x telephoto lens on its bigger siblings isn't as useful as the ultrawide sensor it keeps. But most importantly, it's a cheaper, smaller phone in a sea of Android phones that are getting larger and pricier. The S10e is a more distinct alternative to the S10 Plus than the standard S10, which ends up being a middle child that doesn't quite earn its price hike from its budget flagship sibling. For brilliantly high performance and the looks of a premium Android smartphone all at a fraction of the price of the competition, the OnePlus 6T is the phone to get. The new flagship from OnePlus has leapt ahead of some of its biggest competitors, Apple and Samsung included, to push forward a 6.41-inch display that has almost no bezel, a tiny notch, and a fingerprint sensor built into the display. OnePlus’s cameras have also improved, making them close in quality to some of the best smartphone cameras around, if not quite as good. If it weren’t for the slightly bulkier design and the higher price, the Galaxy Note 9 would likely be at the top of this list. But, it still lands a neat second place behind the S9 Plus. With a sharp, 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, it’s offering a great viewing experience for anyone that’s on the go often. Inside, it’s powered by the same components as the Galaxy S9 Plus, but with larger storage capacities available, a bigger battery, and more RAM optional. The Galaxy Note 9 sets itself apart with the S Pen, which enables some handy hands-free features and smooth note-taking. The cameras on front and back are just as impressive as the Galaxy S9 Plus shooters. Huawei's P series has always taken photography seriously, and the P30 Pro takes that to an extreme. Where other phones have struggled to fit more than a 3x optical zoom in ever-slimmer phones, Huawei circumvented that limit with a novel design: lay its lens stack along the phone's length and use a mirror to reflect it out the rear cover. Hence the "periscope" lens, which manages 5x optical zoom, a 10x digital zoom and a baffling 50x full digital zoom. The phone is no slouch in other departments, either, sporting Huawei's latest Kirin 980 chip to reach speeds on par with Apple and Samsung flagships. Respectable RAM and storage round out the phone's specs, but you'll pick up the P30 Pro for its astounding photo capabilities, which include impressive DSLR-level ISO, per Huawei's claims. Alas, Huawei phones aren't the easiest to get in the US – you'll have to pick them up wholesale from a retailer, since no carrier currently supports the company's devices. Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro isn’t the easiest to get your hands on in the US, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive a phone. It’s the best we’ve ever seen from Huawei, and stacks up well against all other Android phones. It’s QHD display measures 6.39 inches and supports HDR10 for a great visual experience, as long as notches aren’t an issue There’s a fingerprint sensor embedded underneath the display as well. Inside, it’s offering impressive performance with Huawei’s own Kirin 980 chipset and 6GB or 8GB of RAM. It comes with plenty of storage and a large battery as well. The camera offering on the Mate 20 Pro is truly impressive, with a combination of three cameras on the back and a super-sharp 24MP selfie camera. The rear camera system combines a 40MP wide-angle sensor, an 8MP telephoto sensor, and a 20MP ultra-wide sensor. The result is an incredibly versatile snapper with AI backing it up. Google’s Pixel 3 XL is a bit bigger and blockier than its smaller sibling, with sizeable bezels that are less and less ignorable in 2019. The phone still has one of the best camera setups on the market, and it does that with just one rear sensor, two front-facing sensors, and a whole lot of software optimization, so credit where credit is due. The design of the Pixel 3 XL isn’t quite as dazzling as the other offerings on this list, but it’s passable. It boasts a 6.3-inch OLED screen, but has a glaring notch at the top. The dual front-facing speakers help make up for that unsightly notch. The internals are also competitive with the other flagship phones. While many try, it can be really hard to beat a Samsung flagship that nails just about every aspect of being a great Android smartphone. The Galaxy S9 Plus offers so much to meet the varied needs of just about any phone user. Even after it's been surpassed by the S10 Plus, the venerable S9 Plus is still a quality phone that you can now get pretty cheap. The design of the Galaxy S9 Plus is great, with a nearly bezel-less display measuring 6.2 inches across. That screen is crisp with a high resolution, and it’s only made better by the Super AMOLED technology. And, let’s not forget about the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack and an IP68 rating against water and dust ingress. Pair that great design with powerful internals, ample storage that’s expandable via microSD card, and a suite of capable smartphone camera sensors, and you’ve got an easy winner. The Galaxy S9 just isn’t quite as exciting as some of the other new phones, and that sees it fall a bit lower than its larger siblings despite having similar looks and internals. While it doesn't compete with the S10 series, at this point, it's quite a bit cheaper. Like 2017’s model, it has a stunning 5.8-inch display that fills almost the entire face of the device, ridding you of needless bezels and (for better or worse) the home button. The rear fingerprint sensor has been better positioned over the Galaxy S8. But, with newer phones offering in-screen fingerprint sensors, it’s just not that exciting. Still, the flagship quality and performance of this phone are not to be overlooked, nor is the recent trend in price, which sees it competing more closely with the likes of affordable OnePlus phones. LG may not be as present in the collective phone consumer consciousness as it once was, but it’s recent smartphones have been quality options. The LG G7 ThinQ is a testament to that. Inside, the LG G7 is similar to other flagships, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and 4GB or 6GB of RAM depending on the device’s storage size. It has a 6.1-inch display with a sharp 1440 x 3120 resolution, and can offering a blazing 1000 nits when you really need to see the screen in direct sunlight. | Astro A40 Headset got tuned up with tips from pro gamers Posted: 11 Apr 2019 12:54 PM PDT Gaming peripheral maker Astro has announced a new version of its famous A40 TR Gaming Headset and MixAmp Pro, promising better sound and a few other perks to please competitive and casual gamers alike. Astro claims it upped the audio quality after collaborating with pro gamers to get their input. The new headset packs Astro’s Audio V2 enhancement that will offer “a more balanced signature sound” and improved voice quality, especially for gamers and streamers.
Besides some tweaks to the audio quality, there doesn’t seem to be a huge change to the design of the headset: it’s still open-back with a removable mic and swappable earplates. It's also still compatible with Astro's Mod Kits that exchange the open-back speaker tags for closed-back ones, and add improved noise-cancellation the microphone. If you’re looking to up your game, the newly redesigned MixAmp Pro TR also supports Astro Audio V2, a 20 to 24,000 Hz frequency response and continues to offer the ability to daisy-chain MixAmps and headsets together for team play. Like last generation's model, the A40 will be sold in two configurations – either Xbox One/PC version or a PS4/PC version) for $149.99 (£149, around AU$200). Or you can get it packaged with the MixAmp Pro TR for $249.99 (£249, AU$439). The new A40 Headset and MixAmp are available now on both Astro's US and UK website, and units will begin appearing in stores and online later this month.

| Acer ConceptD products pack serious creative chops – and serious prices Posted: 11 Apr 2019 10:54 AM PDT Acer brought a serious suite of new tools for 'prosumers', with laptops, desktops and monitors geared for professional use, to its annual Next@Acer event in New York City. The new line is called ConceptD and includes even a VR headset designed for digital engineers. The new family of ConceptD machines are designed with a simple aesthetic to be timeless, and the series of laptops could be a boon for on-the-go creatives. The mobile lineup includes three laptops.

The laptop has a 17.3-inch, 4K UHD display built on a hinge that allows it to flip, rotate and extend in a way similar to the Microsoft Surface Studio. That sharp display also sports Pantone validation for color, with 100% coverage of the Adobe RGB colorspace and a Delta E (a professional method of calculating color accuracy) of less than one. The screen, paired with a magnetically-attached Wacom EMR stylus, allows for 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity as well. Powering the whole experience is up to a 9th-gen Intel Core i9 processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics, all cooled by Acer's 4th-Gen Aeroblade 3D fans to keep the system cool and noise below 40dB. The ConceptD 7 and ConceptD 5 lack the unique hinge design, opting for a traditional laptop style, but still offer creativity-focused specs. Each has a 15.6-inch 4K UHD display with 100% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space, and a color accuracy of Delta E less than two. The ConceptD 7 offers higher performance on up to a 9th-gen Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q GPU. The ConceptD 5 steps it down just a little with an 8th-gen Intel Core i7 and AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics. But, this is also the thinnest and lightest of the bunch at 3.3 pounds (1.5kg) and just 16.9mm thick. The ConceptD 9 will be available in North America in June starting at $4,999 (about £3,830, AU$7,045). Meanwhile, the ConceptD 7 and ConceptD 5 will both launch in April in the US, starting a t $2,299 (about £1,760, AU$3,240) and $1,699 (about £1,300, AU$2,390) respectively. The ConceptD 500 will be much more affordable, starting at $1,699 (about £1,300, AU$2,390) when it launches in June in the US, and Europe in July.

| Acer Predator Helios 700 leads company's next-gen gaming laptop push Posted: 11 Apr 2019 10:29 AM PDT Spearheaded by the Acer Predator Helios 700, Acer revealed plenty of new gaming laptops at its annual Next @ Acer event in New York City, backed by the latest Nvidia RTX (and GTX) graphics and Intel 9th-generation processors. The Acer Predator Helios 700 is a desktop replacement with an overclockable 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, up to 64GB RAM and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 – not the Max-Q version. This laptop can support this powerful overclockable hardware, thanks to its unique HyperDrift keyboard. This keyboard is packed with MagForce keys and linear switches, and can slide forward to uncover more ventilation. Coupled with the 4th-generation Aero Blade cooling tech, gamers can push this hardware to the next level. If that desktop replacement is a little too thicc for your blood, Acer also revealed a refresh of the Acer Predator Helios 300, the "#1 gaming notebook." It keeps a similar design to the original, but updates the internals. The Acer Predator Helios 300 features a 144Hz display with a 3ms response time, up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 graphics, as much as 32GB of RAM and 9th-generation Intel Core i7 processors. This gaming laptop will also feature the 4th-generation Aero Blade cooling, to push the hardware as far is it will go.

Intel's 9th-generation laptop chips will feature Wi-Fi 6 and Intel Optane Memory support on-board. We're not sure which architecture these chips are based on, but Coffee Lake Refresh is a safe bet. Intel will reveal more details at a later date. The Acer Predator Helios 700 will be available in the US in April and Europe in July, starting at $2,699 (€2,699; about £2,070, AU$3,760). Meanwhile, the Acer Predator Helios 300 will be available in the US in April and Europe in June, starting at $1,199 (€1,499; about £920, AU$1,670).
Image Credit: TechRadar Going NitroAcer didn't stop with its Predator gaming laptops, though – it also revealed two mid-range gaming notebooks that should be much more affordable. This mid-range line is led by the brand-new Acer Nitro 7, a thin-and-light gaming laptop measuring just 19.9mm thin with a 78% screen-to-body ratio. The Nitro 7 is packed with 9th-generation Intel Core processors, the latest Nvidia GTX graphics and a 15.6-inch, 144Hz display with a 3ms response time. Then, there's the Acer Predator Nitro 5, which has been refreshed with new components, including the latest Nvidia GTX graphics and the same 9th-generation Intel Core processors. This will all be behind a 17.3- or- 15.6-inch display with narrow bezels, along with a 144Hz refresh rate and low response time. We're not sure which GTX graphics will be included, but our money would be on a mobile GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1650, which appeared in an Acer leak earlier this month. These rumored mid-range mobile chips haven't been announced by Nvidia, but leaked benchmarks are promising. The Acer Nitro 7 should be available right now in the US, and Europe will see it in June, starting at $999 (€1,199; about £770, AU$1,390). The Acer Nitro 5 will be available in the US this April and in Europe this May, starting at $799 (€999; about £610, AU$1,100)

| Amazon and Microsoft to face off for Pentagon cloud contract Posted: 11 Apr 2019 10:21 AM PDT The US Department of Defense has revealed that Amazon and Microsoft have been chosen to continue competing for the Pentagon's $10bn cloud computing contract. This means that Oracle and IBM are officially out of the running for the Defense Department's Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud (JEDI) contract that is part of the Pentagon's broad modernization effort of its IT systems. Department spokesperson Elissa Smith confirmed that AWS and Microsoft are now the only two companies left in the running for the lucrative JEDI contract in a statement, saying:
“I can confirm that AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Microsoft are the companies that met the minimum requirements outlined.” Last year during its request for bidders, the Pentagon said that the contract for cloud computing services could be worth as much as $10bn over a 10-year period. JEDI contractWhen the JEDI contract was first announced, AWS, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle were considered front runners though at the time, AWS was the only company with government approval to handle secret and even top secret data. Due to the size and complexity of the deal, the earliest a contract will be awarded is likely in mid-July. However, there is still an ongoing investigation into Oracle's claims that AWS was given an unfair advantage in the bidding process. Oracle has taken issue with the fact that a former Amazon employee who worked on the JEDI contract recused himself from his position and then later went back to work at AWS. According to Smith though, a department review of the acquisitions process did not uncover any potential ethical violations. Via Reuters

| E3 2019: Everything we expect to see at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this year Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:54 AM PDT No matter how it changes over the years, E3 is still the biggest event in gaming. Whether it’s held at a hotel, a convention center or somewhere out in Hollywood, it is the definitive industry event of the year, where gamers from around the world get together to see what comes next for consoles, handhelds, PCs, mobile phones and everything in between. That said, while E3 2019 has the heritage of the world’s most illustrious gaming convention, this year’s show will be a bit different: EA announced recently that it wouldn’t hold a traditional press conference and would opt instead to host several smaller live stream events, while Sony says it won’t be attending the conference at all.
If E3 is your go-to source for gaming news, that may raise a few questions: Will E3 still be the same? Is it dying? Does that mean we’ll all get a discount on a conference pass? The answers to all of the above, for now, are no. While we won't be sure exactly what’s going to be different about this year’s event until we get there, we can hopefully provide some insight - and some predictions - as to the games we’ll get to see at this year’s show.
Officially, the 2019 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2019) will begin on Tuesday, June 11 and end on Thursday, June 13. Those dates, however, are just for the portion of the show held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center. In reality, the first big event of E3 2019 is the EA Play kick-off event that’s slated for Friday, June 7 at the Hollywood Palladium. While EA has told us not to expect a keynote speech, that Friday afternoon is the first time we’ll be able to play the publisher’s upcoming titles, as well as get some info about games coming out in the next year or two. Between EA Play on Friday and the opening of the show floor on Tuesday morning you can also expect a press event for Microsoft sometime on Sunday afternoon with a chance of Bethesda, Square Enix, Ubisoft and Nintendo announcing a keynote later. We expect to be in Los Angeles from Friday until Thursday, and gamers with an entry pass should try to do the same.
FIFA 19 (Image Credit: EA) Keynote time: TBD on Friday, June 7 EA has an early lead going into 2019 with its plans already detailed on the publisher’s website. To that end, EA says it will be hosting its annual EA Play event from Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9 with free tickets to be distributed shortly. While EA hasn’t told us which games, exactly, it’s bring to E3 2019, chances are good we’re going to see Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn Entertainment, as well as some addition to the Titanfall universe - either a second spin-off title or Titanfall 3. Speaking of Respawn, we’ll also likely hear about its plans to expand its successful battle royale shooter, Apex Legends. Elsewhere inside EA’s event we’re predicting that we’ll see announcements for the next version of the Madden, FIFA, NHL and NBA Live franchises, as well as another expansion for The Sims 4 that might continue StrangeVille’s story-first approach. Less likely but still possible are new games from EA’s DICE studio, the developers behind the Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront games who have yet to announce a project for 2019, as well as projects from PopCap (famous for Plants vs Zombies) and Ghost Games, the new stakeholders of the Need for Speed franchise. Last but not least, BioWare debuted a teaser trailer for Dragon Age 4 at last year’s The Game Awards, and we expect to hear something about its development at EA’s event.
Final Fantasy VII (Image Credit: Square Enix) Keynote time: TBD After the long-awaited release of Kingdom Hearts 3 in early January, Square Enix has been fairly quiet. What we know for sure is that Square Enix is currently working on Dragon Quest Builders 2 on Nintendo Switch, as it was announced during a Nintendo Direct earlier this year, as well as Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition. Outside of those two games, it’s likely we’ll hear more about the next episode in Life is Strange 2, as well as DLC for Kingdom Hearts III. Less likely but still possible is the chance that we’ll hear about The Avengers Project that’s being developed by Crystal Dyamics and Eidos Montreal and Final Fantasy VII Remake which, back in 2017, switched developers from CyberConnect2 to Square’s in-house team. ‘But is it too early to hear something about Final Fantasy 16?’ Yes. Yes, it is.
Halo Infinite (Image Credit: 343 Industries) Keynote time: TBD As of right now, Microsoft is the only one of the big three console makers that’s definitely going to E3 2019. That gives Microsoft a bit of an advantage if it decides to debut its next-gen Xbox codenamed Project Scarlett, and it might be the reason why Sony is avoiding the show altogether. While we’re still not sure exactly what Microsoft is going to show us in terms of hardware, chances are good we’ll at least see the new Xbox One S All-Digital Edition somewhere at the show, either on-stage during the keynote or, in the case it releases beforehand, throughout Microsoft’s booth on the show floor. We’ll also hear more about XCloud, Microsoft’s new game streaming service and new updates to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service which has grown immensely in the last 12 months. Less likely, Microsoft could have demos of the HoloLens 2 in a similar setup to a few years ago when it paired the hardware with a demo of Halo 5: Guardians, but that’s on the far fringes of what’s likely to happen. In terms of games, we’re predicting that Microsoft’s first-party studios should be there in full force with new footage of Gears 5, Halo Infinite and, as always, a new Forza title. Last year Microsoft announced the acquisition of several new studios including The Initiative, Undead Labs, Playground Games, Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games, so hopefully we’ll start to see some of the projects these companies have been working on.
Elder Scrolls VI (Image Credit: Bethesda) Keynote time: Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 5:30pm PT Regardless of Sony's plans, we now know that Bethesda will be holding a showcase event at E3 2019, close in time to last year's event. To that end, you can expect to hear more about the developer/publisher's titles starting on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at 5:30pm PT. So what can we expect to see? It’s almost a given that we’ll hear updates for legacy titles like The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76, two of the developer’s largest MMOs to date, as well as the previously Doom Eternal from partner iD Software. In between bombshell announcements, we’re also likely to hear more about Bethesda’s free-to-play and mobile offerings like Elder Scrolls Blades, which is due out later this year, and The Elder Scrolls: Legends, a free-to-play card game that’s in the same vein as Hearthstone. Unfortunately, those of us expecting to see new trailers for the next hotly anticipated entry in the Elder Scrolls franchise, Elder Scrolls VI, and Bethesda's ambitious sci-fi project, Starfield, are going to be disappointed. Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard told a roomful of attendees at PAX East that it's still too early to talk about the games and asked everyone to "please be patient".
Keynote time: TBD Sorry guys, unfortunately Sony is skipping the E3 festivities this year and has said that it will instead find another venue to showcase the games and hardware coming down the pipeline. We’ll have more info on this shortly, but for now, we’ll just have to wait to hear more about The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 (Image Credit: Ubisoft) Keynote time: Monday, June 10, 2019 at 1pm PT (4pm ET, 9pm UK) Ubisoft will definitely be back at this year's E3. The developer-slash-publishing house has a lot on its plate for early 2019 including Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 as well as Trials Rising, both of which came out in the February-March window, but hasn't said what's coming later this year. The game we know the most about from Ubisoft that would likely be at this year’s show is Skull and Bones, the ship-focused combat game that looks to carry the torch from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Ubisoft has yet to give us a solid release date for the game, but it’s likely that’s the sort of thing it’s saving for an E3 2019 keynote. It’s also likely we’ll hear more about Beyond Good and Evil 2 and potentially get our first look at the gameplay at Ubisoft’s keynote... but that could just be wishful thinking on our part. Beyond those two games, we’ve heard rumors that Ubisoft will announce three to four new AAA titles in between March 2019 and March 2020, but we can only speculate what’s to come. The only franchise that’s definitely not going to be there is a mainline Assassin’s Creed game as Ubisoft has said that it will be skipping a release in 2019.
PC Gaming Show (Image Credit: PC Gamer) Keynote time: Monday, June 10, 2019 at 10am PT (1pm ET, 5pm UK) If you’re a PC gamer, you won’t want to miss the PC Gaming Show, which will make its fifth consecutive return to the convention. We’re not sure what to expect from the two-hour event, but if it’s anything like previous years it will feature a number of indie games that wouldn’t usually get time up on the big stage alongside hardware announcements. For folks at home, the event will be available to stream on twitch.tv/pcgamer, or on Facebook or YouTube or, if you're in town, it's open to the public with an RSVP at The Mayan Theater. At last year’s event we got the chance to see a number of new indie games like Neo Cab and Maneater, as well as some heavy-hitting titles like Stormlands from Insomniac and Warframe: The Sacrifice from Digital Extremes. We’re expecting some similar big announcements from this year’s show. The gaming world might be gearing up for a possible reveal of the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Two at E3 2019, but there's a lot in store for desktop gamers, too.
Animal Crossing (Image Credit: Nintendo) Keynote time: TBD While Sony won’t be at this year’s event, Nintendo most certainly will - first digitally in a Nintendo Direct that usually airs Tuesday morning and then physically when its massive booth takes over West Hall. In terms of what games Nintendo is going to bring with it this year, it seems likely that we’ll hear more about Pokemon Sword and Shield, as that’s due out by the end of 2019, as well as well as Animal Crossing on Nintendo Switch, which was announced in 2018, and given a 2019 launch window. Fans of The Legend of Zelda franchise have the Link’s Awakening Remake to look forward to while fans of Mario will likely get a chance to play Mario Maker 2 on Nintendo Switch - as that’s due out sometime in June. Beyond those core games, we know Nintendo is developing Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Fire Emblem Three Houses, the latter of which should be available in August unless it’s delayed. Nintendo could also use the time to show off its next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character pack. There’s also this weird Nintendo Labo VR kit that maybe Nintendo should lose on the plane on its way to the show. (Kidding!) | Google Docs will let you edit Office files Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:31 AM PDT Working with Microsoft Office files in Google Docs is about to get a whole lot easier as Google has announced that it will soon add native support for Word, Excel and PowerPoint to its online word processor. Up until now, you could view files from Microsoft in Google Docs but had to convert them to Google's format before you would be able to edit, comment or collaborate on them inside its web app. The new feature is rolling out to G Suite users in the next couple of weeks though the company has revealed that regular users will also be receiving the feature as well. In terms of supported file types, Google Docs will support .doc,.docx, and .dot files in Word, .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm and .xlt files in Excel and .ppt, .pptx, .pps and .pot files in PowerPoint.
Microsoft Office supportVice President of Product Management for G Suite, David Thacker explained how the new functionality will work in a blog post, saying: “People work with all sorts of tools to get work done, which is why we’re making it possible to collaborate in real-time in Microsoft Office, just like you do in G Suite. With Office editing in Docs, Sheets and Slides, you can work on Office files straight from G Suite without having to worry about converting file types—helpful if you interact with external clients, or even internal teams, who use Office.” Thacker also pointed out how users will be able to leverage G Suite's intelligence, for example using AI-powered grammar suggestions, when editing Microsoft Office files in Docs. The news that Google will allow users to work with Microsoft Office files in Docs as well as its recent announcement that Dropbox Business users will be able to edit Docs, Sheets and Slides shows that the company is ready to make its online office suite more open. At around £200 and with a range of colourful models, the HP Stream 14 has been a popular pick as a first ever laptop or for those after something to cover the basics like web browsing or document editing. If you're going to use this quite regularly you may want to skip the 32GB model and look out for the 64GB version instead. Budget Windows laptops with just 32GB of storage tend to struggle with future system updates and some users report there's not enough space after accommodating the OS itself to continue updating it for long even if they've not installed any extra apps or store media files on it. If you can't find any decent 64GB prices, we'd consider a Chromebook instead for this price, as they can handle updates even if they have a small 32GB hard drive.
As one of the cheapest gaming laptops that will still run games at decent settings, the Acer Nitro 5 is well worth a look if you're wanting to get into PC gaming and play modern games too (just don't expect to be running Battlefield V on ultra settings ok?). However, in the world of true wireless earbuds, these distinctions aren’t quite as clear, and you may well be considering buying a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds, even if you have an iPhone – and vice versa. Now, that Apple have released an updated version of its true wireless earbuds the Apple AirPods (2019), which come with an optional wireless charging case, it's even more difficult to choose which is the best true wireless earbud model for you. If you’re not sure how to choose between the Apple AirPods (2019) and the Samsung Galaxy Buds, you’ve come to the right place; we've examined the pros and cons of both true wireless earbuds to help you decide which ones will suit you best.

It's debatable how much has actually changed since the originals were released, and they certainly aren't the rumored AirPods 2 we were hoping for – we're not expected them to be released until at least 2020 now. The Samsung Galaxy Buds on the other hand were released in February, and as such, are not quite a ubiquitous as the AirPods. Still, they represent a size-able improvement from Samsung’s previous true wireless buds, the Gear IconX. Released alongside the new Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10 Plus and Galaxy S10e, the Galaxy Buds are optimized to work with these handsets, much like the Apple AirPods (2019) are optimized for iPhone, linking strongly to dedicated Siri or Bixby features, for instance – however, both sets of true wireless buds can be used with any smartphone.

It's worth keeping an eye out for AirPods deals if you're not interested in the new wireless charging case or marginally faster pairing times, as we've seen some decent reductions since the updated models came out. You can also purchase the wireless charging case separately for $79 / £79 / AU$129, which is good news if you have the original AirPods but want to upgrade your case to one that supports wireless charging, although you might feel it’s a high price to pay for some added convenience. Samsung don't charge you any extra for this convenience, as the Galaxy Buds' wireless charging case comes as standard. The Samsung Galaxy Buds slightly undercut the price of the AirPods (2019) at $149 (£139 / AU$249). So, unless you opt for the AirPods (2019) with the wireless charging case, there’s not a lot in it when it comes to price, and comparing the two probably won’t help you make a decision (unless you really care about that $10 difference.) You can get some of the best true wireless earbuds for less of course; the Optoma NuForce BE Free5 wireless earbuds show just how accessible truly wireless headphones are today, costing $100 (about £75, AU$134).

It’s interesting that Apple hasn’t changed the design of the earbuds themselves in 2019; after all, those stem-like protrusions were widely mocked upon their original release in 2016, and they don't do the headphones any favors in 2019. Like their predecessors, the AirPods (2019) draw battery from a pillbox-like charging case, which features a small LED light on the front, which allows you to check the charge status of the buds. True to that rigid Apple design, you won’t find the convenience of replaceable silicone eartips, and although they felt relatively snug when we tested them, we’d think twice before wearing them while working out. Like we say, it's a 'love it or hate it' kind of design, and if you are a fan of Apple's clean aesthetic, you'll probably like the AirPods (2019). The Samsung Galaxy Buds on the other hand, have a more ‘classic’ true wireless earbud design (if such a thing exists), with all the tech built into their pearlescent housing, unlike the AirPods (2019), which pack all their tech into the stems. Overall the Samsung Galaxy Buds are quite dainty, and feel pretty secure thanks to the inclusion of rubber wingtips. In our opinion, they are the more aesthetically pleasing of the two models, but it really comes down to personal taste. Both earbuds have touch controls, which means you can summon your phone’s respective voice assistant (the AirPods can summon Siri on iPhones, while the Galaxy Buds summon Bixby on compatible Samsung phones), play/pause your music, and answer and end calls.

While the Galaxy Buds generally connect very well to Samsung phones, their connectivity seems to vary between different users; multiple writers on the TechRadar team tested the buds, and while some experienced no connection dropouts, others experienced them regularly. Most of the issues with connectivity seems to have been addressed by a software update sent out by Samsung, but as with most true wireless buds, you may experience connection dropouts if you are using them nearby other Bluetooth devices. While Apple AirPods don’t come with their own app, the Samsung Galaxy Buds have the Galaxy Wearables app, which allows you to change the EQ settings, and turn on features like ‘ambient sound’. This lets some environmental noise pass through the earbuds – handy if you’re cycling or running and need to be aware of traffic. This app is only available on Samsung phones so if you want features like this and you have an iPhone, you’re going to be disappointed – aside from easier connectivity, this could be another reason to stick to the AirPods if you have an iPhone, and vice versa if you have a Samsung phone.

Apple also says that the second-generation model offers “3 hours of talk-time from a single charge”, up from the two hours provided by the originals. The Samsung Galaxy Buds at least beat the AirPods (2019) in this regard, with six hours built into the buds themselves – but the charging case only provides an additional seven hours of battery – a measly amount compared to the AirPods' 20. If you have the original AirPods, you can still buy the case separately and enjoy the benefits of wireless charging. Of course, if you get the AirPods 2 with the wireless charging case, it will cost you around $40 more than if you bought them with the standard charging case. Samsung puts no such premium on its own wireless charging case, which comes with the Galaxy Buds at no extra cost. Both wireless charging cases can be used with a Qi-compatible charging mat, but the Samsung Galaxy Buds have another trick up their sleeve: if you have the Galaxy S10 phone, you can set up two-way wireless charging and place your headphones on the rear of the device to get them charged up as well. It’s smart, and we found it to work seamlessly.

In terms of audio quality, the AirPods (2019) have a lively, powerful presentation, although they can sound slightly harsh when it comes to higher-frequency sounds, and they aren’t the bassiest earbuds on the market. If you’re a true bass-head, you might prefer the Galaxy Buds, which have a warmer, and generally more bass-heavy soundstage. Neither of these buds will offer the same kind of audio prowess that a really good pair of over-ear headphones will, but you do get the freedom of wireless connectivity in exchange for a slightly less powerful sound.

Both the Apple AirPods (2019) and the Samsung Galaxy Buds have plenty of good (and less good) features, and at roughly the same price, there’s not a lot in it. Rather than focussing too much on the hardware (unless you really dislike the hanging stem look of the AirPods), it’s probably best to ask yourself “which ecosystem is best for me?” If you have an iPhone or an iPad, it’s likely that the AirPods (2019) will suit you better than the Galaxy Buds, with hands-free access to Siri and fast connectivity. Likewise, if you consider yourself a Samsung fan, the extra features afforded by the Galaxy Wearables App means that the Galaxy Buds are probably the smarter choice. That’s not to say you can’t use either model with any smartphone you want – you absolutely can, you just might find the buds don’t connect quite as well as if you use them with a device in the same ecosystem. It’s also worth noting that there are lots of other brands making true wireless earbuds these days that may suit you better than either offerings from Apple or Samsung. | Some GeForce GTX graphics cards now support ray tracing Posted: 11 Apr 2019 09:02 AM PDT Nvidia has released a new set of drivers that allow owners of GTX graphics cards to enjoy ray tracing with games that support these added visual bells and whistles. Previously, this was exclusively the domain of RTX cards, but in March, Nvidia promised us broader support for ray tracing to include GTX cards, and not just Turing models (like the GTX 1660) but previous-generation 10-series cards. Indeed, the new 425.31 GeForce Game Ready Drivers support ray tracing via DirectX Raytracing (DXR) on the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and GTX 1660, along with the GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1070, and GTX 1060 (6GB). The Titan X and Titan Xp are also supported.
Naturally, you have to bear in mind that the performance hit on GTX cards may be a tough blow to take, given that they don’t have the fancy on-board tech and dedicated RT cores that really help with rendering scenes with ray tracing (which is an intensive task even for an RTX GPU, after all). When it first revealed this capability was coming to GTX graphics cards, Nvidia made it clear that we should only expect basic ray tracing effects and a low ray count, and that these GPUs wouldn’t be able to handle anything complex. And with the release of these new drivers, Nvidia has provided some handy benchmarks to give us an idea of the sort of ray tracing performance we can expect from GTX models. It’s no real surprise that Metro Exodus, a very taxing title, will only limp along to the tune of 16.4 frames per second (fps) on a GTX 1080 Ti at 1440p resolution with ray tracing set to ‘ultra’ details. Whereas with DLSS, the RTX 2080 Ti will hit a smooth 65.7 fps, and indeed the RTX 2080 manages 52.7fps. (DLSS helps to boost frame rates, as well as image quality, and isn't one of the additional benefits coming to the GTX GPUs). Shadow of the Tomb Raider, also at 1440p but with ‘high’ details, saw the GTX 1080 Ti rack up 34fps, which is at least just about palatable – but the RTX 2080 Ti hit 84fps, and the RTX 2080 achieved 64 fps (again, with the RTX models using DLSS). Turing GTX?What about the GTX 1660 Ti? That managed 8.5fps in Metro Exodus and 24fps in Tomb Raider – the latter almost matching the GTX 1080’s 25fps – but overall, these figures will hardly bowl you over. However, remember that these benchmark tests were running ultra and high DXR, and as we already mentioned, Nvidia did tell us that we should only expect basic effects, ie low DXR. Oddly, though, Nvidia didn’t provide any benchmarks for low settings, but it did include results for Battlefield V running medium DXR. Here, at 1440p resolution, the GTX 1080 Ti hit a more impressive 50.6 fps, with the GTX 1660 Ti on 36.8fps, naturally considerably behind the RTX cards like the vanilla 2080 which managed 72.8 fps (with DLSS). Dropping down to Full HD with medium settings, the GTX 1080 Ti managed 64.1 fps, and the GTX 1080 recorded 53.1fps, with the GTX 1660 Ti not far behind that on 49.8fps. So dropping to low might get you something a little smoother on the more demanding ray tracing games. All in all, given the benchmarks shown, it feels a little like Nvidia is trying to stress the power of RTX cards here, as opposed to the ability for GTX cards to capably manage some kind of decent ray tracing performance. Nvidia has also pushed out three tech demos that show off ray tracing tech further: Atomic Heart, Justice, and Reflections, the latter of which was created by Epic Games. The new 425.31 drivers also provide optimizations for Anno 1800, and fixes for some game crashing bugs, including random crashes in ARK: Survival Evolved with GeForce RTX 20-series graphics cards.

What will 5G networks mean for me?
How fast will 5G be?It’s still not exactly known how much faster 5G will be than 4G, as much of the technology is still under development. That being said, the networks should provide a significant upgrade to current download and upload speeds - with the GSMA proposing minimum download speeds of around 1GBps. Most estimates expect the average speed of 5G networks to reach 10Gb/s, and some even think transfer rates could reach a whopping 800Gb/s. This would mean that users could download a full-length HD quality film in a matter of seconds, and that downloading and installing software upgrades would be completed much faster than today.
Will I be able to get 5G networks on my phone?Existing smartphones, tablet or other devices that were released when 4G networks were the standard may not be able to connect to 5G to begin with, or may incur extra costs to do so. However following the 2020 deadline for the initial rollout, we should soon see devices coming with 5G connection as default. Don't worry though - although 5G should represent a major step up from current 4G and 3G networks, the new technology won’t immediately replace its predecessor - at least, not to begin with. Instead, 5G should link in with existing networks to ensure users never lose connection, with the older networks acting as back-up in areas not covered by the new 5G coverage. So-called “4.5G” networks (also known as LTE-A) are set to fill the gap for the time being, offering connections that are faster than current 4G networks, although only certain countries such as South Korea can benefit from them right now. Once launched however, implementing 5G may be a slower process. Much like the gradual takeover of 4G networks from the previous generation, existing network infrastructure may need to be upgraded or even replaced in order to deal with the new technology, and homes and businesses may also need to get new services installed. It’s not yet known how 5G networks will take over from existing networks, but again, much like the rollout of 4G, you may not be able to immediately connect to the new networks without upgrading your technology.

It has a Micro Four Thirds sensor a little smaller than the APS-C sensors used by DSLRs, and 16 megapixels rather than the usual 24, but the smaller sensor means smaller lenses, and you’re not likely to notice the difference in megapixels in real-world shooting, provided you're not expecting to print too large. What you will notice is this camera’s great build quality and finish, its responsiveness, its excellent built in Art Filters and the rather clever shooting options in its Advanced Photo mode. Olympus offers a good range of lenses, too.
Best DSLRs for beginners in 20192018 saw a handful of beginner DSLRs launched, including the Canon EOS Rebel T7 (known as the EOS 2000D outside the US) and the Nikon D3500. This year, we expect to see replacements for Canon's EOS Rebel T7i (known as the EOS 800D outside the US) and Nikon's D5600, but these are likely to be minor upgrades rather than sweeping changes, so don't let that put you off buying either of these great entry-level DSLRs. For now, this is our pick of the best beginner DSLR cameras in 2019.
Nikon's latest entry-level DSLR replaces the D3400 below, and while it shares a very similar specification on the inside, it benefits from a comfier handgrip and revised control layout at the rear. The new 24.2MP sensor delivers excellent levels of detail, and all the controls and features are easy to get to grips with. This is helped by Nikon's clever Guide mode, that gives real-time explanations of key shooting features. If you're looking to get more creative with your photography, and looking for your first DSLR, the Nikon D3500 is hard to beat.
It may have been replaced by the D3500, but don't discount the D3400. Sporting a range of features perfect for the novice user, this is still a great camera to get started on the road to more creative photography. Sharing many of the same internal specs as the D3500, the battery life is brilliant, while the images from the 24MP sensor won't disappoint. You also benefit from Full HD video to 60p and 5fps burst shooting, together with wireless connectively (via Bluetooth) to get your shots out into the wider world without the hassle of cables. If you don't mind having the latest model and you can pick the D3400 for less than the D3500, then this is still a great buy.
The EOS Rebel T7i (known as the EOS 800D outside) sits at the top of Canon's entry-level EOS DSLR range. Sporting a 24.2MP sensor that delivers an improved high ISO performance over older models, the Rebel T7i's autofocus also gets a boost, now with a 45-point arrangement that's backed up by excellent live view AF system. There's also newly designed graphical interface that will certainly make this camera even more appealing to new users, but the absence of 4K video and the quality of the exterior materials disappoint. Perhaps one of the more expensive options out there for the first-time user – but definitely one of the best.
The D5600 competes directly with Canon's EOS Rebel T7i / EOS 800D at the upper end of the entry-level DSLR market. Where Nikon's D3000-series cameras are designed as cost-conscious introductory DSLRs, the D5000-series is preferable if you want to get more creative. The D5600 sports a large 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen, and while the live view focusing speed could be quicker, the 39-point AF system is the best you'll find in a entry-level DSLR. There isn't much wrong with the D5600's 24.2MP sensor either, delivering excellent results, while the logical control layout of the D5600 makes it easy to use.
The EOS Rebel T6i (called the EOS 750D outside the US) may have been replaced by the EOS Rebel T7i / 800D, but it's still a great option if the price of the newer model puts you off. While the sensor isn't quite as good as the one in the newer T7i – despite sharing the same resolution – it's still very good, while the vari-angle touchscreen is still one of the best around. AF performance could be better though, and the camera isn't quite new enough to benefit from the more up-to-date Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that makes focusing swift in live view and during videos, but overall this is still a very capable entry-level DSLR.
The D5300 was around for little more than a year before the D5500 technically replaced it (which has in turn be replaced by the D5600). It shares the same 24.2MP sensor with an identical maximum ISO25,600 sensitivity as the D5500, whilst the D5300's EXPEED 4 image processor and 39-point autofocus system have also been carried over to its replacement. The D5300 doesn't sporta fancy touchscreen control, you do get GPS instead, while the D5300's 600-shot battery life will still outlast a Canon EOS Rebel T6i / EOS 750D. All in all, it may not be the latest entry-level DSLR, but the D5300 is still a smart buy.
Canon introduced the EOS Rebel SL1 (EOS 100D outside the US) to compete with the influx of mirrorless cameras and it was the smallest DSLR available when it was introduced in March 2013. Now replaced by the EOS Rebel SL2 (EOS 200D), its slightly bulkier proportions make it feel more like a slightly pared-down Rebel T7i / 800D than anything unique. It's not a bad option for new users, but there are better-value alternatives available at the moment.
The EOS Rebel T7 (known as the EOS 2000D outside the US) is Canon's cheap and cheerful entry-level DSLR. While not featuring quite the same impressive spec as pricier models up the Canon range, you still get a pretty solid set of features for the beginner including Wi-Fi and NFC technology built-in. This means you can transfer images to your smartphone for super-quick sharing. Images from the 24.1MP sensor are more and adequate, but not quite a match for those from the EOS Rebel T7i / EOS 800D. The 9-point autofocus system, as well as the Live View AF system is disappointing, while there's no touchscreen either.
Replaced by the D3400 in 2016, which itself was replaced by the D3500, the D3300 was a big seller in its day and it's still one to consider if you're on a tight budget. The biggest difference between the D3300 and the D3400 is the lack of connectivity on the former. If you want to transfer your images to your smartphone or tablet, you'll need to invest in Nikon's cheap plug-in Wi-Fi adapter that plugs into one of the ports on the D3300. With stocks running down, the D3300 is becoming less easy to come by, but if you do track one down at a good price then you'll get yourself a great beginner DSLR.
It may have been replaced by the EOS Rebel T7 / EOS 2000D (above), but that does mean that the EOS Rebel T6 (known as the EOS 1300D outside the US) should now be even cheaper. In many ways the specification is very similar to the newer camera, with the key difference being the Rebel T6 features a 18MP sensor, which compared to rivals, is starting to show its age against rivals with higher pixel counts. Now that it's been replaced, you might be able to track this down at an even more tempting price before it disappears for good.

Being the newest camera here, we've not had a chance to test the Canon EOS Rebel SL3, also known as the 250D yet. But it's destined for popularity, being the smallest and lightest DSLR that's fitted with a flip-out LCD screen. It also arrives with 5fps burst shooting, built-in Wi-Fi and compatibility with all the lenses you'll need, and if you want a DSLR with 4K video recording this is the cheapest way to get it – by some margin too. Sadly, this is subject to a heavy crop factor, and you can't use the excellent Dual Pixel CMOS AF system that you have at your disposal outside of 4K shooting. Still, if video isn't your thing or you're happy with Full HD recording, this could be ideal. Watch this space for our full review.
