Apple : Best Kindle 2019: which Amazon ereader should you buy?

Apple : Best Kindle 2019: which Amazon ereader should you buy?

Best Kindle 2019: which Amazon ereader should you buy?

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 10:11 AM PDT

If you've landed here, it's likely you're after an ereader. In 2019, the rule is that the best ereaders are, generally, devices made by Amazon, and we've reviewed them all so you can find the best Kindle for you.

There are a few devices worth getting, such as the Kobo Forma, but more often than not you'll likely want to opt for Amazon's Kindle range.

Update: Amazon has announced a new Kindle Oasis, which adds a warm light function to make reading in the dark kinder on your eyes. We're currently putting it through our review process before adding it to our best Kindle round-up.

Unlike many other TechRadar buying guides, we've put together this list in price order rather than specifically ranking them. A lot of what you'll want here comes down to how much you're willing to spend.

That's why you won't see these products ranked by number, and instead this is a culmination of the best products so you can judge for yourself exactly what you'll need.

Best Kindle: Amazon Kindle 2019

The entry-level Amazon Kindle is the best Kindle you can by right now, with a great balance of features and price.

Launched in March 2019, its new feature was the inclusion of a back-light for just $89.99 (£69.99, AU$124), which now means Amazon's entire Kindle line come with illumination.

You still get the benefits of the previous model, with an adequate (and now back-lit) touchscreen display, long lasting battery and plenty of space for all your digital tomes, plus an intuitive interface, that makes navigating your books a breeze.

It's slim and light, so even though you could essentially be carrying an entire library with you it won't even feel as weighty as a single paperback.

Why should I buy it? Because you want a bargain and can live without waterproofing, the latest design and a higher resolution display.

Best Kindle: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Amazon updated the Kindle Paperwhite back in 2018 to add several features from the Voyage and Oasis lines, including IPX8-rated waterproofing and support for Audible audiobooks.

The screen is still fantastic with a beautiful 6-inch HD display with 300ppi pixel density and 8GB of storage, meaning you can keep thousands of books on one device.

The Kindle Paperwhite is almost the closest you can get to real paper while getting all the benefits of an ereader. You have access to Amazon's huge library of books and you can even use the Kindle Unlimited rental service on the Paperwhite.

There's a built-in light and you're not going to get any screen glare when reading it in bright sunlight. The battery isn't as good as the last version as it only lasts between four and six weeks, but that said it's still a very good amount of time to get reading your ebooks.

Why should I buy it? If you're looking for one of the best screen experiences on an ereader and you want to be able to read in bright sunlight, the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is your choice.

Best Kindle: Amazon Kindle Oasis

The Amazon Kindle Oasis is the most expensive and advanced traditional Kindle you can buy today. At over three times the price of the standard Kindle, you’re dropping a lot of cash, but it’s worth it – the Oasis is one of the best Kindles you can buy, especially if you’re looking for the traditional experience.

If you're looking for the most comfortable ereader experience you can ever have this is the best one for you. It has a brand new design that's now made of aluminium and is also waterproof, so you can read in the bath or next to the pool while you're on holiday.

The Kindle Oasis is thinner on one side, which makes it even easier to hold in one hand. There's a vibrant display with 300 pixels per inch and a fantastic backlight that makes it the brightest Kindle yet. The battery is all inside the latest Kindle Oasis (there's no charging case like on the 2016 version) so you'll get six weeks standby life and we found it lasted a whole week with a few hours reading a day.

Plus you can now listen to audiobooks with Audible too, but you'll need to have a Bluetooth speaker or pair of headphones to hook up as there's no speaker or 3.5mm headphone jack. This will cost you quite a bit more than all the other ereaders on this list - but if this is the device you use every day to absorb your tomes, why not spend that little bit extra?

Why should I buy it? If you want the very best ereader experience, the Kindle Oasis offers it.

Cameroon vs England live stream: how to watch Women's World Cup 2019 match from anywhere

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 08:30 AM PDT

Game on! Although they enjoyed a flawless group stage campaign with three wins from three, England didn't emphatically blow away of their opponents in the same way that other 2019 Women's World Cup contenders like France and the USA have. They now face a testing challenge in the first knockout stage - make sure you don't miss a minute with a Cameroon vs England live stream today.

It's unlikely Cameroon will be a push-over - the African side have had to battle their way to get to the last 16, and their last-gasp win over New Zealand will ensure they'll go into this game with confidence at a high.

With a quarter-final tie against either Norway or Australia at stake, both managers will be pleased that they don't appear to have any injuries going into today's game.

England boss Phil Neville rested a number of players in their last match against Japan, so expect the likes of Jodie Taylor, Beth Mead, Nikita Parris and Fran Kirby to all be back among the starting 11.

Making their second consecutive appearance in the round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Cameroon will be hoping to go better than they did at Canada 2015 where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by China.

Don't miss any of the action by following the instructions below and grabbing a live stream of Cameroon vs England wherever you are in the world.

Microsoft Office vs LibreOffice

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Microsoft Office and LibreOffice are both excellent office suites, but how can you be sure which is right for you? On the surface the two look very similar, but there are some important differences to bear in mind when making your decision.

Price

LibreOffice is free to download and use, even for commercial purposes – no strings attached. Because it's open source software, you can also download and edit the source code, should you wish to.

You can buy a one-time license for Microsoft Office, but a Microsoft Office 365 subscription offers the best value. There are different tiers available, depending on your needs, with options for business and personal users.

Programs

One of the key considerations when you're choosing between Microsoft Office and LibreOffice is the programs on offer.

LibreOffice includes Writer (word processing), Calc (spreadsheets), Impress (presentations), Base (databases), Math (editing formulas) and Draw (vector graphics).

A Microsoft Office 365 personal subscription includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive (with 1TB storage) and Outlook. PC users get Publisher and Access as well, though Mac fans will miss out.

File compatibility

Of all the free office suites available, LibreOffice offers the best file compatibility around. Its tools can import and export all the most common file formats, including Microsoft DOCX, PPTX and XLSX. it also supports a wider range of non-Microsoft file formats than Office 365.

However, it's worth bearing in mind that documents won't always look exactly the same in LibreOffice as they do in Microsoft Office programs. This is partly due to Microsoft's use of its own fonts, and partly due to difference in the way data is interpreted and rendered on-screen.

For most purposes this won't be a problem, but if you frequently share files with people who use either LibreOffice or Microsoft Office, you might find it more convenient to stick with the same office suite as them to ensure you're all on the same page.

User support

If you choose Microsoft Office, one of the things you're paying for is the customer support. Microsoft provides a help app that can lend a hand with common problems, and there's an online chatbot that can provide solutions too. If the automated systems don't provide the answers you need, there's phone and live chat supporrt with real Microsoft technicians.

Microsoft has published a set of guides for helping you carry out common tasks using Microsoft Office as well, which can be enormously helpful.

If you choose LibreOffice, you'll be relying on the goodwill of Community Assistance – but there's a lot of it. You'll find a wealth of information in the LibreOffice Wiki, Ask.LibreOffice provides a ticketing system where you can submit queries (and read answers to other users' questions), and there's an IRC channel for live chat.

The important thing to remember is that, although LibreOffice's support is excellent, it's all dependent on volunteers donating their time and expertise. The Document Foundation is under no obligation to provide support, and you may have to wait longer for a reply than you would if you were using Microsoft Office.

Understandably, there's no phone support for LibreOffice, which might be an issue if you're looking for software for your business.

Collaboration

With Microsoft Office 365, multiple users can share files via OneDrive, and collaborate on the same document with real-time chat.

There's no equivalent feature for LibreOffice, so if you're looking for a free office suite for collaborative working, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides should be your first port of call.

Cloud services

If you opt for LibreOffice and want to store your documents in the cloud, you'll have to piece together your own system (understandably, The Document Foundation can't provide free server space for LibreOffice's millions of users). This doesn't have to be complicated, though, and a service like Dropbox makes it easy to sync files to the cloud by saving them in a dedicated folder on your PC or Mac.

You can also sign up for Microsoft OneDrive without being an Office subscriber, or check out one of our other recommended free cloud storage providers.

If you opt for a Microsoft Office subscription, things are much more straightforward, because Microsoft OneDrive is built right into each program and is the default save location for all new documents. A Microsoft Office 365 subscription also gives you more storage space than a free OneDrive account.

Platforms

Microsoft Office 365 is available for Windows and Mac, with mobile apps for iOS and Android (the latter of which will also work with ChromeOS). There's also Microsoft Office Online, which offers pared-down versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint in any modern web browser.

LibreOffice is available for Windows, Mac and Linux, with a portable version that can be installed on a removable storage device. However, there are no apps for working on smartphones, tablets and Chromebooks, with the exception of LibreOffice Viewer for Android, which uses the same engine as the desktop software to let you read documents. There's also a remote app for controlling slideshows made with LibreOffice Impress.

Amazon overtakes Google and Apple to become the world’s most valuable brand

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 06:36 AM PDT

Amazon has become the world’s most valuable brand this year by overtaking Google and Apple, according to a report. Last year, Google was ranked the top, followed by Apple and Amazon.

The 2019 BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands ranking, released by WPP and Kantar put amazon on top. Smart acquisitions by the brand have led to new revenue streams and combined with the ability to stay ahead of its competitors by offering a diverse eco-system of products and services, has allowed the e-commerce giant to accelerate its brand value growth.

“Amazon’s phenomenal brand value growth demonstrates how brands are now less anchored to individual categories and regions. The boundaries are blurring as technology fluency allow brands, such as Amazon, Google and Alibaba, to offer a range of services across multiple consumer touchpoints,” said Doreen Wang, Kantar’s Global Head of BrandZ.

Disruptive ecosystem models are flourishing

Using their consumer experience and expertise, she said that these brands are crossing over into the business services sector, creating new opportunities for brand growth.

“Disruptive ecosystem models are flourishing in regions such as Asia, where consumers are more technology-enabled and where brands are integrating themselves into every aspect of people’s daily lives,” she added.

Asian brands increase their presence with 15 Chinese, three Indian and one Indonesian brand making the ranking among a total of 23 from the region.

“The growth in value of this year’s top 100 brands to an all-time high proves the power of investing in brands to deliver superior shareholder value. Behind this headline growth figure lies the success coming from a new phenomenon of ecosystem brand building,” David Roth, CEO of The Store WPP EMEA and Asia and Chairman of BrandZ, said.

“We’re seeing a move from individual product and service brands to a new era of highly-disruptive ecosystems. Brands need to understand the value this type of model can create and should embrace its approach to be successful in the future,” he said.

Instagram emerged as this year’s fastest riser

For the first time, Alibaba overtook Tencent and became the most valuable Chinese brand, moving up two places to No 7. Tencent dropped three places to No 8.

Instagram emerged as this year’s fastest riser, climbing 47 places to No 44.

Despite the economic uncertainty surrounding the US and China trade tariffs, almost a third of a trillion dollars ($328 billion) of value was added to the BrandZ Top 100 Global ranking over the last year, giving it a combined brand value of $4.7 trillion – roughly the combined GDP of Spain, Korea and Russia.

Much of this value is derived from consumer technology brands appearing in the ranking which combined are now worth in excess of $1 trillion.

The report said that luxury is the fastest growing category (+29%) followed by retail (+25%), fuelled by the shifting preferences to digital channels from Gen Y and Gen Z consumers.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 might keep expandable storage as a Pro feature

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 06:30 AM PDT

Not long to go now until the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 sees the light of day – an August launch is expected – and the latest from the rumour mill suggests at least one Note 10 model is ditching expandable storage.

Max Weinbach from XDA Developers took to Twitter to reveal a few Note 10 tidbits from a source who's played with two of the upcoming phones. Apparently a microSD card slot is only present on the Pro model.

That would be a break with tradition for Samsung, as expandable storage support has long been a mainstay of its flagship phones. The Galaxy S10 phones can take up to 512GB of the stuff.

Admittedly the standard Note 10 will no doubt come with plenty of internal storage on board, but having the option to expand it is always useful.

About that headphone jack...

Weinbach's tweets also weigh in on the continuing saga over headphone jack support in the Galaxy Note 10. Depending on which sources you believe, the Note 10 will have or maybe won't have a 3.5mm audio port.

According to these latest leaks, the headphone jack is being retained on both the Note 10 and the Note 10 Pro, so you can carry on using your old wired headphones as usual (or invest in a new pair without having to switch to USB-C or wireless).

This will be the first year that Samsung launches a Pro edition of the Note alongside the standard model – if the rumors are accurate. The multi-model strategy has worked for the Galaxy S series, so Samsung is apparently keen to expand it.

Based on previous Note launches, we should see the new phones appearing sometime in August, bringing with them some speed and camera boosts over the 2018 model. As always, we'll bring you the news as it's made official.

Queen's Club tennis live stream: how to watch the 2019 championship from anywhere

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 06:18 AM PDT

This year's Queen's Club tennis tournament has felt like a real celebration of tennis, ahead of the serious Wimbledon business just around the corner. The biggest story has been Andy Murray's big comeback at a tournament he's won a record five times. See how Andy and the rest get on with a Queen's Club tennis live stream.

Founded back in 1890, this 129-year-old tournament is held in West Kensington and is part of the ATP World Tour 500 series – it's also one of the oldest tennis tournaments on the planet. It's also where a world's fastest serve record was set by Andy Roddick in 2004 with a smashing 153 mph mega swing.

The 2018 winner Marin Cilic defeated Novak Djokovic, both of whom will be returning this year as will 2017 winner Feliciano Lopez. All that should make for great viewing and Murray says of his return: "Once you get back on a match court, that’s when you can really test yourself. I’d imagine after here I’d get a better idea of where I’m at."

While centre court can only hold 9,000 people, you don't need to miss out. So if you want to catch all the action live, read on to find out the best way you can live stream Queen's Club tennis from wherever you are. The ace news (sorry) is that it's absolutely free to watch if you're in the UK.

How to watch Queen's Club tennis 2019 for free: UK stream

This year Queen's Club tennis 2019 will be aired on the BBC Two live, meaning it's free for anyone to watch via TV, the BBC iPlayer app or a TV player online.

Alternatively, if you're watching online, we'd heartily recommend TVPlayer.com, which offers a host of channels with a high quality stream.

Amazon Prime will also host the event this year, live, so you can stream direct from any device that has the Prime Instant Video app.

Generally speaking, Queen's coverage will start at around 1pm daily.

If you try to watch this calssic British tennis tournament from abroad while on holiday or away on business, you'll discover that iPlayer will block your progress. It isn't licensed to show the action outside the UK.

To get around that block, you can use a VPN - or Virtual Private Network - to pretend that your laptop or mobile's IP address is back in the UK. It's much simpler than it sounds, and can be done in three very easy steps:

F1 live stream: how to watch today's French Grand Prix 2019 online from anywhere

The green lights are on and the Formula 1 drivers are GO at the 2019 French Grand Prix. It's the eighth race of the 2019 Formula 1 Grand Prix season and this is the place to be if you want to find out how to live stream F1 action from wherever you are in the world.

The 2019 F1 season has arrived on French soil where the Paul Ricard track will offer high-speed racing on its lengthy circuit with powerful 5G corners. All that is just a 10km drive away from the French Riviera, but the drivers are going to have to earn that first.

This race begins with Lewis Hamilton still leading the charge with 162 points followed by his teammate Valtteri Bottas with 133 points then Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel with 100 points. And things only get better for the Mercedes men, once again dominating Saturday's qualifying to take a one-two on the grid.

Ferrari was hoping to use its car advantages at Canada thanks to the track suiting them. They came so close, but a controversial stewards' decision denied Vettel top spot on the podium. Now the focus is to just make sure Mercedes' unbeaten run is broken - Charles Leclerc starts from third.

All that tension should make for an exciting race and you can stream F1 live from anywhere in the world.

Huawei set to launch the 5G version of Mate 20 X in the UAE in July

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 04:28 AM PDT

The Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) will be the second 5G phone to go on sale in the UAE after the ZTE Axon 10 Pro. Huawei hasn’t announced the pricing on the phone just yet but it is expected to go on sale in the UAE next month. The phone is expected to work on both Etisalat and du's 5G network.

The Huawei Mate 20 X (5G) is almost identical to the Mate 20 X launched towards the end of 2018. The massive 7.2-inch screen is great for gaming and the 5G version supports 40W supercharging which could come in handy depending on what the impact of a 5G network is on the phone.

We will update this article once Huawei releases a more accurate date or pricing on the Huawei Mate 20 (5g)

No season passes or loot boxes in Gears 5

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 04:12 AM PDT

As we count down the days until Gears 5's September release date, The Coalition has announced some more details around how players will be able to earn new content and items as they play.

In a blog post on the official Gears 5 site, which puts an emphasis on creating a "player-first experience", it's been confirmed that DLC maps for the game will all be free in both matchmaking and private play, meaning you won't be excluded from playing with friends just because you don't have the right maps.

Something else of interest to players is a new Tour of Duty system, which will offer a way to earn new customization content such as character skins. This system, which essentially sounds like a free battle pass, will introduce daily challenges and seasonal medals which, when completed, will unlock cosmetic items. These items and challenges will change with each season to keep things fresh.

Earn your content

It will, according to The Coalition, be clear to players what's required of them to unlock the items they want and this system won't feature any kind of premium, paid content.

Another way to unlock new items for free (at least in monetary terms) will be to simply play the game thanks to Supply Drops. Every moment of play across Gears 5's multiplayer modes will contribute towards you earning a random item from a designated Supply pool. This pool of items is apparently unique and nothing in it can be purchased using real-world money. If you get a duplicate item, it'll automatically be scrapped and you'll be able to use the remnants to craft items or apply some skill upgrades.

That's not to say Gears 5 is utterly bereft of purchasable items. The game will have its own currency called Iron, which can be purchased with your real-world money as well as picked up in limited amounts through Tour of Duty.

Iron will allow players to buy exclusive cosmetic items in the in-game store, but to keep things fair all of these purchases will be direct (so no Gear Packs or random generations) and none of the items will give players any kind of competitive advantage in the game.

You can, however, spend your Iron on a Boost which will offer "accelerated progression for a period of real-world time" which could last for a single day or a whole week. Boost will provide double multiplayer XP, double character player XP in Escape and Horde modes and double speed Supply Drop progression.

It's worth noting that this doesn't mean you'll get Supply Drops faster than anyone else, as a representative for The Coalition has said on Reddit that these drops are "based on time" therefore aren't boostable, just as "XP has no impact on content".

It's yet to be confirmed how much Iron will be required to purchase Boosts. Hopefully the sums dropped in Tour of Duty will be enough to cover a couple of purchases to give players a taster.

Overall, the changes seem like positive steps for Gears 5 and will go some way to assuaging pay-to-win concerns of those thinking about picking up the game when it launches in September. The Coalition is promising to share more information about the game before that launch date so keep an eye out.

Vodafone's mega 100GB data SIM only deal returns - now with added bonuses

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 03:50 AM PDT

Well ladies and gentlemen, it's back. Vodafone's impressive 100GB SIM only deal has once again returned with its affordable pricing and massive data cap. Only this time it has made its comeback with some variety, giving you options on how you like your deal.

There is effectively three different versions of this offer. The first two drastically drop the price of your SIMO through cashback, one offering £90 in cashback and the other £120.

Weirdly, we would personally recommend the lower amount, simply because it comes through to you automatically. The second cashback option comes in the form of redemption. That means you have to claim back your money in five separate instalments, the perfect option for those determined to get the best saving.

Finally, if the cashback offers above don't manage to win you over, there's another option and it is exclusive to TechRadar readers. Skip the cashback and you could get a free pair of wireless Jays headphones, which cost £69.95 on Amazon.co.uk.

No matter which of the above options you choose, this is an excellent SIM only offer that is more than worth going for - we have more details about them below. With the exclusion of other offers from Smarty and Three on unlimited data, you won't find anything quite like this for value.

Vodafone SIM only deal + cashback

Vodafone SIM only deal + free headphones

What if I want a shorter term SIM only deal?

Not too keen on committing to a full year of Vodafone? No problem.

If you want some flexibility with your SIMO then Smarty, a relatively new player to the game, has an incredible unlimited data offer right now. Cutting the price down to an incredible £18.75, there is no beating this offer for unlimited data.

Where this offer really shines is in its flexibility. You are simply tied into a 1-month rolling contract, allowing you to leave whenever you want. Stay for 1 month or your whole lifetime and you will pay £18.75 either way.

Rain is forecast in Gran Turismo Sport

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 02:59 AM PDT

Gran Turismo Sport has been on the road for a while now but that doesn't mean new things aren't coming over the horizon. This time it's rain clouds.

In a new video posted by the Gran Turismo TV channel, below, there's footage of the game's first heavy rain track in action. The video shows a rainy lap in the Red Bull Ring from behind the wheel of a Peugeot RCZ Gr. B. rally car.

The driver of the car is Coque Lopez, a racer for Williams Racing eSports. As a professional, Lopez knows what he's doing so if you think this video makes driving in wet conditions look easy, think again.

Gran Turismo Sport only has one mildly damp track at the moment so the addition of some different driving conditions will no doubt be welcomed by seasoned players looking for a new challenge.

At the moment there's no confirmation of when the wet weather update will go live but it's been expected for a long time now - all of the in-game cars are already compatible with wet weather conditions. With footage finally appearing, it's likely that players won't have to wait too long before an official date is confirmed.

Fortnite Season 10 might force you to upgrade your old graphics card

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 02:30 AM PDT

Fortnite Season 10 is coming – and Epic Games has decided that deserves a small bump in the game's minimum requirement spec, so some of you running older graphics cards might have to invest in an upgrade.

The use of a DirectX 11 graphics card will go from being a recommended requirement to an absolute requirement for Fortnite Season 10, a per an official update.

"While a DirectX 11-capable graphics card has always been one of Fortnite’s system requirements, we’ve kept support online for players with older graphics cards – so they could keep playing!" explains Epic.

"However, when Season 10 begins, Fortnite will no longer be compatible with these older graphics cards. This allows us to focus our development and testing efforts to further optimize the Fortnite experience for all players."

Time to upgrade

With compatible cards stretching back to 2009 (AMD) and 2010 (Nvidia), there's a very good chance that you're already running DirectX 11-ready hardware – but just in case you're not, you need to think about upgrading.

A compatible card won't cost you much either, with plenty of lower-end models on the market to pick from. DirectX 11 stretches all the way back to Windows Vista.

While there's been no official confirmation, with Fortnite Season 9 ending on August 1, it's a good bet that Fortnite Season 10 will start on August 2. That gives you a decent window of time for sorting out your hardware.

We haven't heard much at this point about what Season 10 might bring with it, but expect the usual tweaks to the map and other features, and a teaser trailer in advance.

Diablo 4: everything there is to know so far

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 02:24 AM PDT

It’s been close to seven years since the initial release of Diablo 3, so obviously we're expecting that it's only matter of time before we start another monstrous loot hunt through Sanctuary in the inevitable Diablo 4.

While Blizzard Entertainment hasn't actually confirmed that Diablo 4 is in the works, it seems pretty likely. Read between the lines of the company's statements on the topic and it seems fair to suggest that something is definitely on the way, and it definitely seems Diablo shaped.

Following the furore around the disappointing announcement of mobile game Diablo: Immortal at Blizzcon 2018, we're expecting Blizzard won't make the same mistake again at this year's Blizzcon.

Want to know more? Here’s everything to know so far about the development of the long-awaited Diablo 4.

[Update: Reports suggest that Blizzard has cancelled work on its StarCraft shooter and shifted resources over to Diablo 4. Read more below.]

Cut to the chase: is Diablo 4 coming out?

  • What is it? The rumor of another entry into the veteran action-role playing dungeon crawling series.
  • When can I play it? With the game yet to be officially revealed, there’s no word on release yet. Evidence suggests so far that it’s at least a couple of years away.

Diablo 4 rumors, development and hires

More development focus

Recent reports have stated that Blizzard is no longer working on a StarCraft shooter and has decided to shift development focus over to Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. This is good news for those waiting with bated breath for Diablo 4 updates as it shows Blizzard is entirely focused on the game. With a larger team behind it could we see more updates soon? Given Blizzard won't be attending Gamescom 2019, it could still be some time.

Blizzard won't be at Gamescom 2019
In a news post from Blizzard Entertainment, the developer confirmed that it won't be attending Gamescom 2019. But why?

"As part of a renewed effort this year to maintain our focus on development, for our current games and our future projects, we won’t have a booth at Gamescom 2019," the post reads. "The show is an important one for the European and global gaming community, and we’re going to miss meeting players in Cologne this year.

"We’re also looking forward to sharing more details about the projects we’re currently working on when the time is right."

While the post itself doesn't shed any light on what these projects might be, it does clarify that if we are getting a Diablo 4 announcement this year, it'll likely not be until BlizzCon 2019 (in November).

What we know so far
When Blizzard Entertainment revealed Diablo Immortal at Blizzcon 2018, there was an uproar. Hordes of fans had been hoping for news on Diablo 4, given the length of time since Diablo 3’s release. But instead they were introduced to a mobile-only touchscreen spin-off title. Whether it proves itself to be good or bad was almost irrelevant – fan’s wanted a proper, PC-first numbered entry into the series, and were fearful that Immortal would be a watered down, cynical attempt to draw more money from their pockets.

Blizzard denied that there was anything else ever set for an unveiling at the event, but a post to YouTube back in August suggested otherwise. In it, community manager Brandy "Nevalistis" Camel stated that there were “multiple Diablo projects in the works”:

"The forges here at Blizzard are burning hot. And we have multiple Diablo projects in the works. Some of them are going to take longer than others,” stated Camel.

“But we may have some things to show you later this year. We hope you stay tuned, while we work to bring these Diablo experiences to life. None of this would be possible without the support that you have shown us for over 20 years.

"So whether you first joined us in Diablo 3 or you are a seasoned veteran, thanks you. Diablo is, and always will be, part of Blizzard's identity, and we can't wait for the future."

While we now know that one of those in-development projects is Diablo Immortal, an educated guess would be that one of the other projects could be Diablo 4.

So what’s pointing us towards a Diablo 4 game in production? In a February 2019 earnings call, COO Coddy Johnson stated that Diablo's development headcount “will grow substantially as the teams work on several projects underway for the franchise”.

Diablo 4

Diablo games are known for their moody dungeons. (Image Credit: Blizzard Entertainment.)

This followed multiple job listings that pointed towards skills needed for a Diablo title – one was hunting for a “skilled Dungeon Artist” with “a focus on composition, detail and mood, while ensuring that the gameplay space is readable," as well as a technical artist who could "help the environment and prop teams define, create, maintain and streamline the modelling and world-building pipeline and processes to bring to life the world of Sanctuary."

Of course, Diablo 3 remains an active concern at Blizzard, so these roles could be purely for maintaining that existing game. But with the majority of Diablo Immortal’s development being handled by Blizzard’s Chinese partner Tencent, Johnson’s call for a headcount rise would point to something more substantial being in the works. Indeed, back in 2016 Blizzard was on the hunt for a new game director "lead the Diablo series into the future." Such a future-gazing role would almost certainly include a mainline Diablo title.

Works in progress: Diablo Hades and / or Diablo Fenris

Game development is often iterative. Diablo 3 was in the works for many years and prototyped in many different ways before becoming the game we know today – and even then, it’s changed dramatically since its (somewhat shaky) initial launch.

Diablo 4 will likely be no different, and an incredibly interesting report from Kotaku back in 2018 pointed to multiple iterations of Diablo being in the works at Blizzard – one that has now ceased experimentation and has been shelved, the other what is reportedly now the foundation of Diablo 4.

Note that these rumors come from sources we’ve not been able to independently verify, but, working alongside the Kotaku UK team and being able to vouch for their integrity, we’d say there’s legitimate information here that could point to the direction that Diablo 4 is headed towards.

Hades (or ‘Diablo as Dark Souls’): the first of these projects was codenamed ‘Hades’. Sources speaking to Kotaku described a game not dissimilar in approach to Dark Souls – an over the shoulder, hardcore dungeon crawler. Work on Hades spanned 2014-2016 reportedly, and included top Blizzard talent including Diablo 3 director Josh Mosquiera. Given the popularity of Dark Souls, broadly similar RPG mechanics and the shared gothic aesthetic of the two, this would have been an interesting and fresh direction for the series to take. However, sources state that the game just wasn’t gelling, with the team eventually going on to make the excellent Rise of the Necromancer DLC for Diablo 3.

Fenris (a return to Diablo 2’s darkness): the second (and reportedly ongoing) effort to make Diablo 4 was codenamed ‘Fenris’, and was worked on by the same team that canned Hades. It would be a more traditional isometric Diablo title, and would see the caricature, colorful aesthetic of Diablo 3 ditched in favor of a darker, grimier, more horrifying look that bring the creepy dread of the first two Diablo games up to date.

"There’s a lot of people who felt like Diablo 3 got away from what made Diablo Diablo in terms of art style and spell effects," one unnamed Blizzard employee told Kotaku. "They want to make [Fenris] gross, make it dark, [get rid of] anything that was considered cartoony in Diablo 3… Make what people were afraid of in Diablo 2, but modern."

Fenris is also discussed in highly social terms, taking cues from the likes of World of Warcraft and Destiny. While it wouldn’t be an MMO, it could well be a ‘live game’, with social areas that players can meet in before heading out into instanced dungeon raids.

Could it be that the Diablo franchise is about to experience a schism? One that sees the more approachable stylings of the Diablo 3 era be carried as the mobile Diablo Immortal experience, freely monetizable away from the ire of the hardcore Diablo fan, while Diablo 4 goes back to the horror-infused roots of the earlier games in the series, as being worked on with the Fenris project? It’s a reasonable idea.

Whatever happens, we’ll have all the most up to date information on Diablo 4 here. So keep checking back as we delve deeper into the growing darkness at the heart of Sanctuary.

Fortnite Battle Royale update news, patch notes and more

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 02:16 AM PDT

In such a short space of time, Fortnite Battle Royale has become certified gaming phenomenon. Pitting 100 players against each other on a single map, it melds fun, cartoonish gameplay with a fierce competitive streak, and has attracted millions of players across the globe across all ages and demographics.

Season 9 is now officially live, and we've got details of all the latest updates. We knew from the teaser tweet that we had a futuristic theme to look forward to, and so it's been proved.

To help you keep on top of what's new and what's coming up in Fortnite, we've put together this handy page which will be updated with all the latest announcements. So to get you ready for blast off, here's everything you need to know about Fortnite.

What is Fortnite?

There's been a lot of hype surrounding Fortnite since its release in July 2017. But what exactly is it?

Fortnite is a battle royale game which sees you thrown onto an island with no weapons or armor and it's up to you to scavenge for supplies and fight for your life to be the last man or squad standing at the end of the game – with the added pressure of a shrinking map that closes in as the match progresses, forcing players into tighter skirmishes.

The game is available for free on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, with in-game purchases limited to purely cosmetic options.

Fortnite update news and Fortnite patch notes

  • What's new? Fortnite Season 9 is live and we're now on update 9.30. See the new Chug Splash item in action below.

Fortnite is now into season 9 and version 9.30 is our latest update. The big addition introduced in this update is Chug Splash. It may not sound like the most appetizing drink but this throwable will allow you to heal yourself and other players.

The Chug Splash throwable is essentially a six pack of drinks which, when thrown explodes on impact. Any players in range of the explosion (yes, that's friends and enemies) will receive 20 health if injured. If health is full, then 20 shield will be added.

The item can be found in a wide range of places, including as floor loot, in chests, in vending machines, supply drops, and llamas. They drop in stacks of two, up to a maximum of six.

Items being vaulted with this update are Boom Bow, Dual Pistols and Dynamite.

Alongside Chug Splash, there are three new Limited Time Modes in the rotation.

Sniper Shootout Duos is fairly self-explanatory, pitting players against each other when armed only with sniper rifles; Trios is the classic Battle Royale game but with squads of three; and Solid Gold Squads is a popular mode which sees players fight using only Legendary weapons.

You can access the patch notes in full and see the latest Bug Fixes and Updates on the official Epic Blog.

Can I play Fortnite on mobile?

Yes you can! Well, maybe. After months of waiting, Fortnite is finally on both iOS and Android, though you'll need a phone that can actually run the game.

iOS users can download straight from the App Store. As long as you're using iOS 11 on iPhone 6S/SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad 2017, iPad Pro devices or later you'll be fine. Oh, and you'll need an internet connection, naturally.

Fortnite also hit Android phones this summer, and finally came out of beta in October. You can see the full list of phones – and how to find the Fortnite Installer – on our Fortnite on Android page.

Is it the full game?

It is the full Fortnite game. There are some small differences: it’s not quite as visually impressive as it is on more powerful devices, the controls are touchscreen, and a lot of audio cues have been made visual so you can play comfortably in public without the need for headphones. But you won’t be missing out on any key features.

Fortnite update patch notes

What's the deal with cross-play?

A sweet deal is what it is. While previously Xbox One and PS4 owners couldn't play the game together, Sony's U-turn on the matter means that now everyone across Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android can all take part in the crossfire.

So if you've got friends that prefer PC, others that prefer console and you're off on holiday with your mobile, that's no reason for the fun to stop.

There's also cross-progression. So, if you're logged into your Fortnite account on mobile and you later log into your console to play there, everything you did on mobile later that day is carried over.

Sounds great, how do I get it?

We have a guide on how to get Fortnite on mobile on TechRadar and we're constantly updating it with the latest rollout news. If your device isn't there yet, keep checking back and one day it probably will be.

What's a Fortnite Battle Pass?

The Battle Pass is a purchasable item in Fortnite that gives you access to exclusive in-game rewards.

As players complete daily challenges and level up their rank, they earn Battle Stars which can then be used to unlock Tiers in their Battle Pass. Each new Tier you unlock will bring both Free and Premium rewards. The Tiers vary from season to season but in season three you get around 100 items in each Battle Pass which can take anywhere between 75 and 150 hours of play to unlock.

Everyone that has a Battle Pass will get the Free reward they unlock, but only Premium Pass holders will get the Premium reward. Battle Pass Premium can only be purchased with in-game V bucks and not with real money.

You can purchase a Battle Pass for around £7/$10 in the Battle Pass tab of the game’s menu.

Twitch Prime benefits

Those who use Twitch Prime and play Fortnite will be glad to know that they have access to free loot right now. Those with a Prime account can claim the Fortnite Twitch Prime Pack  and the Fortnite Twitch Prime Pack 2 which include a host of cosmetic items and are available across all platforms.

The first pack includes two exclusive gliders and outfits: the Havoc Outfit and Back Bling, plus the Sub Commander Outfit and Slipstream Glider.  The second pack contains three exclusive items for Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode including the camouflage-heavy Trailblazer Outfit, the True North Back Bling, and the Tenderizer Pickaxe. There’s also a brand new dance emote for those that like the dance floor as much as the battleground.

The packs can only be claimed on a single platform, but they can be shared across PC/console and mobile as long as you use the same Epic account across these platforms. You can’t however, share your loot across PS4 and Xbox One even if you are using the same Epic account.

Gears 5: release date, news and trailers

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 01:37 AM PDT

Microsoft's exclusive Gears of War series is one of the most popular to hit Xbox, with the Lancer and its chainsaw bayonet as recognizable as Halo’s iconic Warthog. And at the Microsoft E3 2019 keynote, the company announced Gears 5 is coming out September 10, 2019.

Called Gears 5 rather than Gears 'of War' 5 the latest game in the series will have a female protagonist, Kait. Marcus Phoenix will still appear, but Kait will take the starring role as she leads her team on a personal mission continuing from the emotional ending of Gears of War 4.

Microsoft shared more details about Gears 5 during it's E3 2019 conference: a new 3-player online and local co-op mode 'Escape,' a special character pack featuring Terminator skins in a crossover with the upcoming 'Terminator: Dark Fate' film, and a new teaser.

Another fun addition: Gears 5 will get a Map Editor, a first for the series, per an Xbox official tweet. And if you sign up for the new Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you can play the game four days early on September 6.

[Update: In a blog post it's been confirmed that Gears 5 won't have loot boxes or season passes. Read on to find out more. And don't forget to check our hands on with the game from E3 2019.]

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The fifth game in the main Gears of War series, potentially acting as the middle chapter in a second trilogy
  • When’s it out? September 10, 2019
  • What can I play it on? Xbox One, and PC (maybe. See below for more details)

Gears 5 trailers

At E3 2019, Microsoft gave more details about Gears 5, including the new 3-player co-op mode Escape. Here's the trailer, showing off the three new characters who will fight to get out of a Locust-infested area.

Microsoft and The Coalition studio head Rod Ferguson confirmed Gears of War 5 during the Xbox Keynote at E3 2018. To go alongside the announcement we got a new trailer starring Kait Diaz, Marcus Fenix and the rest of the Gears crew. Locusts will again play a major role in the series when the game comes out later this year.

You can check out the Gears 5 announcement trailer below:

Gears 5 release date

Gears 5 is coming on September 10, 2019, as Microsoft announced during its E3 2019 keynote. But you can get it four days early on September 6 if you subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Gears 5 news and features

Gears 5

No loot boxes or season passes

As we count down the days until Gear 5's September release, The Coalition has announced some more details around how players will be earning new content and items as they play.

In Gears 5, all DLC maps will be free in both matchmaking and private play scenarios and there won't be any loot boxes in sight.

New content will be earned through the Tour of Duty system. This will involve daily challenges and medals that you can complete to rank up and earn cosmetic rewards and you'll also get some of the in-game currency, Iron. It will, according to Coalition, be clear what's required of you to earn each item and there will be no premium, pay-only content in Tour of Duty.

As well as getting a small amount of Iron through Tour of Duty, you'll also be able to buy it using real-world currency. All store purchases will also be direct so there won't be any RNG causing issues.

Another way to unlock new content will simply be by playing - supply drops will happen at random as you rack up the hours and these can't be purchased with real-world currency. If you get a duplicate item, it'll automatically be scrapped and you'll be able to use the remnants to craft new items or upgrade skills.

E3 2019

We got hands on with Gears 5 during E3 2019. Our first impressions of Escape Mode are that it's a fun co-op experience but that it runs the risk of growing repetitive.

XO18 show

During the XO18 show in November, 2018,  The Coalition studio head Rod Ferguson promised "a bunch of innovations, a bunch of changes, a bunch of things that are really exciting and different but still feel like Gears of War" (via GamesRadar).

Cult of personality

During the XO18 show in November, 2018, The Coalition studio head Rod Ferguson
explained the studio wants to prove it can still provide "an authentic Gears of War experience" and that Gears 5 will be about "bringing The Coalition’s personality to the game" (via GamesRadar).

Gears 5

E3 2018

Gears of War 5 was confirmed during E3 2018, and will be called Gears 5 to be released in 2019. Following on from the ending of Gears of War 4, this game will follow Kait as the star of a new trilogy. Breaking her chain of command, the game will follow Kait as she breaks the chain of command and takes her squad on a decidedly personal mission.

PC Gaming

Microsoft has been pushing its PC Play Anywhere program, that sees you able to take your Xbox games and play them on Windows PCs. Gears of War 4 made use of it way back in 2016, so there’s no reason why Microsoft would drop the service for a sequel. (Which is a nice change, considering Gears of War 2 and 3 never saw releases on PC.)

Gears 5

What we want to see from Gears 5

Unanswered questions

Gears of War 4 ended with JD and Kait fighting their way through the Swarm to try and save Reyna, Kait’s mother, only to find it was too late. Reyna wasn’t dead but the Swarm were trying to integrate her into their hive and removing her would kill her. But, at Reyna’s request, JD and Kait tear her away from the Swarm.

Before she does, Reyna teases a great mystery: she gives Kait a necklace that she says she was given by her own mother, Kait’s grandmother. The symbol is one Gears fans will recognize looks remarkably similar to one worn by Queen Myrrah of the Locust, your nemesis in original trilogy. A Gears sequel would have to explore this further – are Reyna and Kait descendants of the Locust?

Gears 5

There are hints that Adam Fenix, Marcus’ father, JD’s grandfather was close to Myrrah before the wars, so there’s a chance that Locusts and humans coupled but it would be new territory for a Gears of War game to explore.

Wish List

Besides continuing the campaign story, we’d like to see more of the changed world we were introduced to in Gears of War 4. Taking place 25 years after the original trilogy, the sequel is set in a world where humans were forced to abandon fossil fuels and collect together in small martial law-governed encampments and violent windstorms sweep the land, tearing up anything left unprotected.

Gears of War 5 should explore that further, showing us how desperate humans are trying to fight off the Swarm on a planet that is trying to kill them.

Gears 5

The Coalition worked to make Gears of War 4’s battlefields more dynamic places, giving you the ability to pull enemies out of cover and leap forward with short range charges. A sequel should continue this, giving players greater freedom of movement and ways to break stalemates between human and Swarm forces.

The original Gears of War cemented the cover shooter as a subgenre, now its sequels have to rattle its foundations by taking away the safety of sitting behind a low wall.

Pakistan vs South Africa live stream: how to watch Cricket World Cup 2019 from anywhere

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 01:34 AM PDT

The Proteas are likely to be the first 'big name' nation to be eliminated from Cricket World Cup 2019, with many calling it South Africa's worst ever showing in the tournament. Pakistan's encouraging early win against England now seems like a very long time ago. Both teams should be fighting hard for pride at Lord's today, and you can watch every minute with a Pakistan vs South Africa live stream from anywhere.

Those looking for positives from a bleak World Cup for South Africa will point to  the form of Rassie van der Dussen, who has chalked up an average of 60 runs an innings during the tournament. The Proteas will be needing more of the same if they're to save any face before heading back from England.

Like South Africa, Pakistan are also languishing on three points at the lower end of the table, with their misery further compounded by a defeat to bitter rivals India in their last match. It's going to take something remarkable for Pakistan to turn things around and reach the semi-finals. Nevertheless, while there is still a mathematical chance, there remains hope and if the inconsistent likes of Shoaib Malik and skipper Sarfaraz Khan show up today, they should be too strong for their opponents today.

You’ll be able to watch all the action with ease from anywhere in the world if you follow our Pakistan vs South Africa live stream guide below.

Watch a Cricket World Cup 2019 live stream from outside your country

If you're in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, US or India and looking to find out how to watch the match, we've got all the details about the broadcaster in your region below.

If you're away from home country and looking to tune in you'll likely to find you won't be able to thanks to geo-blocking. Thankfully there's a way to alleviate that frustration. By using a VPN you'll be able to watch the game safely without having to take a chance on an illegal feed from a website that's likely infested with malware.

Wi-Fi 6 and 5G crucial for digital transformation

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 12:37 AM PDT

The fifth generation of cellular technology (5G) and the sixth generation of Wi-Fi networking technology (Wi-Fi 6) will complement each other and will be game changers for digital transformation, according to an industry expert.

Speaking to TechRadar Middle East, Alaa ElShimy, Managing Director and Vice President for Enterprise Business at Huawei Middle East, said that the biggest limitation for digital transformation is connectivity.

However, he said that with better technological capabilities, Wi-Fi 6 will have a great impact on the digital transformation across multiple industries. He also said that Wi-Fi 6 is injecting new momentum into the market applications and service innovations which will be a “new growth engine” in the next three years and will become equal to or more than the sales of Wi-Fi 5 Wave 2.  ElShimy believes that that everyone in the UAE would have migrated to Wi-Fi 6 in the next two to three years

Pushing the standards

In 2015, the 802.11ac Wave 2 standard was released to push beamforming and MU-MIMO to the mainstream, improving the system access capacity. However, 802.11ac supports only 5GHz terminals, which degrades user experience on the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Huawei is one of the key contributors to the 802.11 group and to Wi-Fi 6 in particular.

Wireless standards evolve once every three to four years and Wi-Fi 6 brings additional advantages of supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, thus making it more compatible with older standards than Wi-Fi 5.

“We are entering into an era of the fully connected and intelligent world; old ways of connectivity do not serve us in terms of user density, bandwidth requirements and latency. While 5G brings a revolution to cellular networks, Wi-Fi 6 will help us push WLAN capabilities to new limits.

“Wireless networks are becoming capable of handling critical user services like 4K/8K, AR & VR, connected robotics, [supporting]  higher number of users per access point, better application awareness and experience,”  ElShimy said.

ElShimy thinks that current wireless access points and 4G networks aren’t equipped to handle the number of devices trying to simultaneously connect to the network and he believes that Wi-Fi 6 is the ideal solution. He states that Wi-Fi 6 is four times faster than Wi-Fi 5 and has four times the capacity.

“The speed [for] Wi-Fi 5 is between 1Gbps and 2.5Gbps while [Wi-Fi 6] can go up to 10GBps. Wireless networks are becoming capable of handling critical user services like 4K/8K, AR & VR, connected robotics, [supporting]  higher number of users per access point, better application awareness and experience,”  ElShimy said.

Cricket World Cup 2019 live stream: how to watch every game online from anywhere

Posted: 23 Jun 2019 12:25 AM PDT

Between the predictable spells of rain, the 2019 Cricket World Cup has delivered all the scintillating action that we'd been waiting four years for. We've now seen enough to start getting an idea of which teams will proceed into the knockout stages and who the form players are that may emerge as the tournament MVPs. There's been big hitting, fearsome bowling and spectacular catches. And you've come to the right place to find out how to live stream every last ball of the Cricket World Cup regardless of where you live.

10 of the world's elite cricket-playing countries are competing title of best ODI team on Earth with only one to be left standing by the end on July 14. It's the 12th incarnation of Cricket World Cup with hosts England going into it as pre-tournament favourites (according to Betfair at least). Other than a blip against Pakistan, they haven't disappointed so far, with the likes of Joe Root and Jofra Archer looking dangerous.

India have the world's two top ICC ODI ranked batsmen (Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma) and the number one bowler (Jasprit Bumrah) and will naturally be a feared force. But perhaps most attention will be on reigning champions Australia, as they welcome back suspended duo Steve Smith and David Warner - both have managed to get some serious runs under their belts already. Bangladesh have impressed against the odds and and New Zealand have picked up some very strong wins indeed.

We've enjoyed it so far, but there's plenty of cricket still to come. If you want to know where you'll be able to watch every single daily match, we'll tell you exactly where you can catch them online with a Cricket World Cup live stream.

How to watch the 2019 Cricket World Cup from outside your country

You don't have to miss a single minute of Cricket World Cup - even if you're abroad and discover that your home broadcaster's online coverage is geo-blocked (we hate it when that happens).

If that happens to you and you're desperate to watch that domestic coverage, there's still a way to get it that doesn't involve putting your security at risk with some dodgy, illegal stream from Reddit. You can simply use a VPN to login back to your country that is broadcasting the actions, and it's really easy to do:

What is the format of the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

The Cricket World Cup is a ten-team tournament. Each country plays each other in a round-robin format, after which the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals. The two winning semi-finalists then get to face off in the final on Sunday, July 14.

How long do Cricket World Cup matches usually last?

Most 2019 Cricket World Cup matches will start at 10.30am BST and end early evening – around 6.30pm BST. A number of day/night games will start at 1.30pm BST and finish under floodlights at around 9pm BST.

Cricket World Cup matches broadly follow the rules of One Day Internationals, with each side facing 50 overs within a 210-minute time limit. Add in drinks breaks for each side and a 30 to 40 minutes innings break and matches can run up to nine hours in length. Some matches are much shorter however - England’s capitulation to New Zealand in the 2015 World Cup saw play wrapped up within four-and-a-half hours, with the Kiwis reaching their 123-run target in just 12 overs.

What teams are competing in this year's Cricket World Cup?

Afghanistan
Having made their maiden World Cup appearance in 2015, Afghanistan aren't likely to be on anybody's list of pre-match favourites.

Australia
The five-time winners suffered a blow with injury ruling out fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, but are boosted by the return of key batsman David Warner after serving a ban for ball tampering.

Bangladesh
With outside odds of 80/1 to win the trophy, Bangladesh will be hoping talismanic batsman Tamim Iqbal continues his excellent ODI record which has seen him clock up over 5,000 runs.

England
The hosts are clear favourites going in to the tournament. Captained by Eoin Morgan, since the last World Cup England have beaten every country competing in the tournament in a one-day series with the exception of Afghanistan.

India
Their recent home ODI defeat to Australia doesn’t bode well, but India will be hoping to repeat their 1983 triumph which saw them win the World Cup on English soil.

New Zealand
Having been sensational throughout the tournament, the Kiwis reached their first ever Cricket World Cup final in 2015, only to fall short at the final hurdle against Australia. A strong top order of Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham should see them in contention again this time.

Pakistan
Having played a recent test series in England, Pakistan come into the tournament well prepared. Tipped by many to at least reach the semis, the tournament’s most unpredictable side stand a good wildcard chance of glory.

South Africa
The Proteas come into the World Cup in fine form having won nine of their last 11 ODI series, however injuries in the run up to key stars like Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Dale Steyn will raise concerns about their chances.

Sri Lanka
A run of just one win in the last 11 games suggest the 1996 winners will struggle in 2019. Much will depend on what form former captain and key batsman Angelo Mathews will be in if they are to get out of their current rut.

West Indies
Like Sri Lanka, the ODI form of the West Indies in recent times has fallen off a cliff. However, the emergence of Shimron Hetmyer and powerful batsman Shai Hope mean there’s some sense of optimism for a decent showing at the World Cup.

What grounds are being used for the Cricket World Cup?

The Oval, London
Established in 1845, the home of Surrey County Cricket Club played host to the first-ever Test match on English soil between England and Australia in 1880.

Trent Bridge, Nottingham

Home of Nottinghamshire CCC, the 17,500-capacity ground will host five World Cup matches, including England vs Pakistan.

Bristol County Ground, Bristol
Built in 1889, and subsequently bought by WG Grace, the ground has been home to Gloucestershire CCC ever since.

Hampshire Bowl, Southampton
The 17,000-capacity ground will host ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures for the first time in 2019, with five matches taking place at the venue.

The County Ground, Taunton
Three World Cup fixtures will be held at the County Ground Taunton, home of Somerset County Cricket Club.
