Best document scanning apps of 2019

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 01:16 PM PDT

Despite the fact that we live in an increasingly digital world, many organizations still print out important documents on paper - whether it be a letter, contract, bank statement, invoice, receipt or educational handout.

Some people still rely heavily on paper, too, because they don’t have access to the internet. But this is only a minority of folks, with estimates suggesting that just 10% of British homes and 11% of American homes aren’t connected to the internet.

At any rate, there is still a lot of paper around, and managing it all can be challenging. Most of us end up misplacing important physical documents at one time or another.

But technology, as it often does, can save the day in the form of document scanning apps. With these, it’s possible to scan paper-based items such as letters, receipts and contracts using the camera of your mobile device.

You can then keep them safe and stored on the cloud for future use. The other benefit of this sort of software is that it lets you send documents quickly. Here are the best document scanning solutions out there right now.

When it comes to scanning documents for digital file storage, chances are you are going to want to save in a portable document format-a PDF file. Adobe Scan is a dedicated scanning app from Adobe, the creators of the PDF file, so expectations are high that this should deliver on most user needs.

Adobe Scan runs as an app on your mobile device, whether it is running Android or iOS, and uses your camera to catch a copy of a document to convert into a PDF file. There is a preview option to optimize the file dimensions, and you can rotate, crop, and edit the colour as required.

The biggest advantage of using Adobe Scan is probably its close integration with Adobe's other apps, not least Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe Fill & Sign. This means you can not only scan into PDF document format, but also edit, annotate, sign and work collaboratively with the documents that you do scan.

Even better, Adobe Scan is a free app to download and use, though there is an in-app subscription available if you want additional features. Cost for this is a monthly subscription of $9.99 per month or $89.99 a year

If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, it’s worth checking out Abbyy’s FineScanner. The software uses optical character recognition to scan text in 193 languages.

Compatible with Android and iOS, the app lets you scan both printed and handwritten text with your mobile device. FineScanner works with 12 file formats, including DOCX, PDF and TXT. The great thing about the app is that it preserves the original document formatting.

What’s more, you can access a set of easy-to-use annotation tools to add signatures and notes to text. And the iOS version of the software sports a feature called BookScan, which lets you digitize books with ease. It turns facing book pages into separate images, removing any defects.

Once you’ve conducted a scan, you can share it with anyone over email or save it to cloud storage lockers such as Dropbox, Evernote and iCloud Drive. Currently, FineScanner is free to download on Android and iOS devices, but it offers in-app purchases if you’d like to get more storage and capabilities.

Genius Scan is yet another popular mobile scanning app, with its developers claiming that the software has digitized more than half a billion documents to date. Described as a “scanner in your pocket”, it lets you turn paper-based documents into JPG and PDF files.

Headline features include smart page detection, perspective correction and image enhancement. And with patch scanning, you can create digital copies of dozens of pages within seconds. The app also enhances the legibility of documents, ensuring they’re readable, and you can keep your files organized with titles, tags and a search function.

Just like FineScanner, you can upload scanned documents to a range of cloud storage platforms, including Dropbox, Evernote, Expensify, Facebook, Google Drive, OneDrive (and OneDrive for Business), OneNote, FTP, SugarSync and WebDAV.

If you’re scanning sensitive documents, you can protect them with built-in encryption and passwords (or Touch ID on iOS). It’s free to download on Android and iOS, but offers in-app purchases.

The app is free and comes with a lot of features. For the more advanced integrations and security and MDM settings, there's a one-time fee of $7.99. For unlimited cloud storage, plus synchronization and web access through Genius Cloud, there's a monthly fee of $2.99 per month.

Scanbot is positioned as an easy and fast way to create high-quality scans on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. According to the developer behind the app, it is capable of making “hundreds of decisions to capture the document perfectly”.

With the software, you can scan documents, receipts, sketches, whiteboards, business cards, labels, QR codes and barcodes. Once you’ve scanned an item, you can choose from five color modes to make it look perfect. There are also tools to crop and optimize scanned documents, all of which are automatically captured in 200+ dpi.

You’re able to save documents as PDF or JPG files, and you can upload these to a range of major cloud services. The software supports iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote, Amazon Drive, Slack, Todolist, OneDrive, OneNote and Box.

If you plan on using Scanbot for business purposes, you can easily fax documents directly from your mobile device in 50 supported countries. As is the case with most of these apps, Scanbot is free to download on Android and iOS, with the option of in-app purchases.

As the name suggests, CamScanner is an app that turns the camera of your mobile device into a document scanner. With it, you’re able to scan a range of documents, from invoices to receipts. The software turns scanned documents into PDF files, which are automatically uploaded to cloud services such as Box, Google Drive, Dropbox, Evernote and OneDrive.

Targeted specifically at business users, the app lets you invite colleagues to view and comment on scans. However, they must have a user account to do so. There’s also an advanced editing feature, which lets you add annotations and watermarks to documents, making them look more professional. For improved security, you can add passcodes to documents.

The app is free to download on Android and iOS, but you can upgrade to a premium plan to get 10GB of storage, send document links with password protection, batch download documents, and more besides.

For the Premium Account you have the option to pay either $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. For the business version, which provides better options for team collaboration, it costs $6.99 per user per month, or $69.99 a year.

More document scanning apps

In addition to the document scanning apps listed above, there are plenty of others to consider. Here we'll feature some of the best of the rest available for Android phones:

Clear Scan is a free PDF scanning app, which allows you to quickly scan any text or image into a PDF file. The app includes an edge detection feature to prevent your images looking skewed, and scanned files can be easily saved to cloud storage services such as Dropbox and Google Drive. While the app is free it does contain advertising, though this is generally unobstrusive.

TapScanner is another free PDF scanner that easily handles images and documents, with an autodetect feature to ensure that any images is properly aligned. In addition to saving as PDF or PNG files, TapScanner also contains an OCR function to covert images to text, and supports over 100 languages. Although the free version contains ads, you can remove these for $4.99 a month, or $19.99 a year.

Microsoft Office Lens is specifically targeted at taking images of whitebaords, notes, and documents, which can then be saved to PDF, Word, or Powerpoint files. These can then be saved to the cloud via OneNote or OneDrive. Office Lens is free to use and comes with no ads, though more properly integrates with the paid-for Office 365 office suite.

Tiny Scanner turns your Android phone into a portable document scanner, allowing you to scan documents, receipts, reports, or anything else, and save the files as either a PDF or image file. Files can then be saved in DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and even Evernote, and the scanned files can be directly sent to your PC via wifi. The app is free, and is supported by ads.

Fast Scan is yet another app that turns your smartphone into a document scanner, and allows files to be saved to PDF and stored in the cloud. It also includes an OCR feature as well as PDF editing. While the app is free to use, it is supported by ads, though you can purchase an upgrade to remove these.

Best affiliate marketing programs of 2019

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 01:06 PM PDT

Affiliate marketing is the key to generating income from websites that might otherwise struggle to sell advertising space, or else service as an additional revenue stream for those websites already active in the advertising space.

The concept of affiliate marketing is relatively simple: you sign up for a program for a particular product or service, and if accepted for it, you can then using existing marketing materials and/or links with a unique URL. In the event that someone signs up for that product or service using that URL, you earn a commission.

As a way of making money online it sounds easy enough, but there are a lot of potential complications with affiliate marketing. For a start, the affiliate tracking must be precise and accurate, so that you are rewarded for the sales you actually made.

On top of that, you need products and services of actual interest to consumers. While many big brands are actively involved in affiliate marketing, there are various restrictions that may make them less attractive than alternatives.

For example, the time between a customer clicking a link and making a sale can be a number of days, so affiliate tracking that takes this into account will likely be more favorable to the affiliate marketer than ones that only reward instant sales, and therefore ignore the possibility of browsing.

You also need to actively promote affiliate products, something a lot of website owners overlook - or even overdo. But done right, it's possible to make a significant income from it.

Here then are the best affiliate marketing websites out there at the moment.

  • Want your company or services to be added to this buyer’s guide? Please email your request to desire.athow@futurenet.com with the URL of the buying guide in the subject line.

Clickbank is a major affiliate marketer which has been around for years, with 200 million customers. They feature a variety of products to partner with, across many categories, particularly eBooks. It is simple for a novice to get started as anyone can create an online account, and it is free with no signup fee, so it is great for startups. They are also notable as Clickbank is known for having a higher commission rate than other affiliate marketers. They even run a Clickbank University to teach the ins and outs of affiliate marketing to those new to the field.

The downside of Clickbank is most of the products for sale are eBooks, and while they span several categories, most are lower quality offerings, without name brand recognition.

ShareASale is another affiliate marketer, with a longstanding reputation across eighteen years, and were acquired last year by Awin, an international affiliate marketer. They feature a large catalog of products to partner with from beauty supplies, to branded sports gear, luxury goods, and eyewear- almost 5,000 vendors in total, making it easy to find products that tie into your site.

With so many options, ShareASale uses a Power Rank system to clue you in to the most popular vendors. The signup process to get started has no cost, and is quite painless, with owner’s of multiple sites able sign them all up in ‘one fell swoop.’

The drawbacks of ShareASale center around the payouts. The payout threshold of $50 can be difficult to reach for newer websites still building their traffic. In addition, to add insult to injury for a struggling site, they can actually delete your account if your account remains under $25.

JVZoo is relative newcomer with six years of experience, and takes a SaaS approach to affiliate marketing; they must be doing something right as they were named by Inc among the ‘5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America’ for 2016 and 2017.

Product creators can list their products in their marketplace for free, and JVZoo gets a standard 5% commission on anything that sells - and nothing before that. Marketing affiliates get instant payments to their PayPal accounts as soon as the item sells, with no payout threshold required. In addition, there is opportunity to make money as affiliates can get a cut of sales of any affiliates that they have recruited, termed a ‘Second Tier Commission.’ Finally, if the buyer that was referred purchases another product (that was not specifically referred), the affiliate gets the commission- permanently.

The downsides include that payments are only made via the PayPal platform, with no option for direct bank transfers. Also, looking at the top selling products, they are all digital downloads, and of lower quality, that could potentially lower the quality of a website. Finally, the affiliate marketing commissions will be taken back for a buyer that requests a refund.

CJ Affiliate is a popular affiliate marketing program with global reach, formerly known as Commission Junction which goes back to 1998. CJ Affiliate features Product Widgets that are embedded on your site, and can then feature multiple products via a slideshow, collage or grid to increase sales. Additional functionality includes deep link automation to automatically monetize links that lead to a CJ advertiser domain, and real time transaction monitoring.

While this all sounds good, the stumbling block is the application process. First you need to apply with your website, which needs to be found worthy of becoming a partner, based on traffic, optimization and quality of content. However, this is only the first step, as then you need to apply individually to each vendor for the products that you wish to sell, and you may not be accepted into their individual affiliate programs, making this one of the harder programs to get up and running with.

Just about everyone already has an Amazon account and buys stuff from them, so it certainly makes a ton of sense to partner with them as an affiliate marketer in their Amazon Associates program. They also sell, well, just about everything, so you can be sure that they have a product to market that is relevant to the content on your website.

It is also free to join, and once accepted to the program you can sell any Amazon product, including third party ones without getting into individual programs. You also get the opportunity to get commissions on not only the specific product that was advertised, but any other purchases that are made at Amazon for 24 hours post referral.

A policy change in March 2017 has frustrated many users, as the commission rate is as high as 10%, but most categories are less, in fact quite a bit so. For example, the commission rate on video games is only 1%, and on televisions it is a low 2%, making it difficult to generate larger profits.

Other affiliate marketing programs to consider

There are a number of other affiliate marketing programs, including some major platforms not yet covered, which either bring together a large number of vendors under one place, or else are large retail platforms in themselves which offer affiliate payments. Then there are other programs where you don't even need to add any marketing or product information, but instead have affiliate links or advertising directly automatically inserted into your website pages. Here we'll look across the board at these options:

Awin is a huge affiliate marketing platform that boasts of over 13,000 advertisers, 110,000 active publishers, and generated 148 million sales in 2017. Publishers can sort through different advertisers to apply for the products or services that might work best, then if accepted, apply targeted links to generate sales. Despite the size of the platform it's actually quite easy to use.

Tradedoubler is another big advertiser, especially in European markets. Like with CJ Affiliate and Awin you need to apply to different advertisers to be accepted, once that happens it's easy to get started. You can use simple links, or any of the promotional banners provided.

eBay partner program is specific to the eBay platform, a huge online marketplace populated by many small sellers. The advantage here is that you can list eBay products and be paid for any link clickthroughs that result in sales, without having to actually market any products directly through eBay itself.

Google Adsense may be seen less of an affiliate program as much as an advertising solution. However, if you're looking to monetize your website you should probably look to Google Adsense as one of, if not the main, source of income for those pages. While the payout isn't high it does add up, and can help support your affiliate marketing campaign and revenue.

Skimlinks is a program that replaces keywords in your text with paid-for links, from which you get paid per click. The advantage is that the links work directly in your copy so you don't need to make room for adverts, but the disadvantage is that some malware can do something similar, so Skimlinks might not look the best for your users. However, it's another option to consider on topic of your affiliate marketing and Adsense to help provide an additional revenue stream.

Best business intelligence tools in 2019

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 12:55 PM PDT

The proliferation of new technologies and digital transformation means that data can now be collected on every aspect of a business, from sales and marketing, to workflows and productivity, to hiring and HR, to overall performance and profitability.

However, many of these data points exist in isolation and require a dedicated IT platform to connect the dots together.

This is what business intelligence represents, the ability to not just look at a specific detail of business operations, but tie in key information from each angle into an overall whole that can allow for real insights and predictions for improving business performance, not least through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

A number of software packages do come with their own reporting data and cloud analytics, but these can also usually be exported into a business intelligence platform.

This is the realm of big data, where actionable insights are key and business intelligence can provide for that.

Here then are the best in business intelligence and analytics tools for business.

  • Want your company or services to be added to this buyer’s guide? Please email your request to desire.athow@futurenet.com with the URL of the buying guide in the subject line.

Zoho Analytics is the business intelligence tool from the folks that have plenty of experience with web-based business tools, namely the venerable Zoho Office. Zoho Reports is a robust solution, that can integrate data from a variety of files, including Microsoft Office documents, URL feeds, and databases, such as MySQL, along with applications, of course from Zoho, but also outside their ecosystem including data from the cloud from Box, DropBox, Google Drive and other applications (for example Salesforce, Quickbooks and Google Analytics).

Data can then be blended via integrated mathematical and statistical formulas, for example marketing costs in an Excel file, with sales data in a cloud database, to create a visually attractive and informative report. This is all done via a simple online interface, and functions can be applied via a simple drag and drop, with reports that can be easily viewed via the portal, or also printed or emailed.

After the short fifteen day free trial, there are several pricing plans. The least expensive basic plan, which as a limit of only two users is $25 monthly, billed at an annual rate. Their most popular Premium plan with fifteen users is $125 monthly, again billed at an annual rate which requires more commitment than some smaller businesses are looking to make.

Software behemoth, Microsoft, also plays in the business intelligence tool space, and their offering is Power Bi. They even have a Microsoft Business Applications Summit that features their Power BI, and not surprisingly other Microsoft business applications. Unlike some of their competition that take a totally web-based portal approach, Power BI also offers downloadable software, so you can run your analytics either in the cloud or via a reporting server.

There is a generous sixty day trial of the software, which promises to “Connect hundreds of data sources,” including Microsoft applications, and other sources such as Facebook, Sybase and Oracle which can then prep data for subsequent data analysis on the fly, allowing reports to be created in just a matter of minutes.

Pricing begins at the Power BI Desktop tier for a single user, which is fully functional, and free. The next tier up is Power BI Pro and supports collaboration between users, and real time data analysis, and after a 60 day trial costs $9.99 per month for each user.

Tableau Desktop endeavors to do more than make charts, but rather to show “live visual analytics.” A slick interface with drag and drop buttons allows the user to quickly be able to spot trends in the data. There is a lengthy list of supported data sources, including Microsoft Excel, Google Analytics, Box and PDF files.

Tableau Desktop becomes an expensive option for a single user as it costs $70 per month that is billed on an annual basis, making this more expensive than other competing solutions. On balance, it also includes the associated application of Tableau Prep under the Tableau Creator package.

Dundas is a browser based business intelligence tool with 25 years of experience. It is designed to be a single tool to transform data into visual data analytics with “granular control over almost all visual design elements.” Data files can be incorporated with drag and drop functionality allowing end users to analyze data without involvement from IT. The HTML5 interface allows it to be used across a variety, including mobile, devices.

There is a free 45 day trial, but after the pricing is opaque and requires a quote, but there are options to lease annually, or own for perpetuity.

SiSense is a business intelligence tool that seeks to simplify the complexities of data analysis by building in IoT, machine learning and AI into their platform. They claim it is so simple and streamlined, that you can go from “data to dashboard in just 90 minutes.” While we can argue the validity of that claim, their list of clients, including the likes of GE, Philips, Fujitsu, NBC and Airbus would back up that this is a top tier product.

Their custom pricing is based on an annual subscription model, but it requires a price quote, and is unfortunately not available on their website.

Other business intelligence tools to consider

We've only scratched the surface when it comes to BI, as there are many providers in the market. However, the caveat is always that a software platform is only as good as its programmers, and data always needs to be the best quality - too many managers presume that processes and workflows are being correctly followed when they may not be and therefore undermine analyzes. Additionally, while there are comprehensive BI tools available there are also ones that focus on particular areas, such as sales or distribution, in order to provide more detailed and focused insights:

Looker is another full-spectrum analytics and business intelligence platform that provides real-time reporting. To get the most out of it some MySQL knowledge would be helpful, but training materials are provided as required. Even without, Looker is an easy to use platform for data discovery that can accommodate a number of third-party sources.

Qualtrics Research Core is more focused on working through developing, collating, and analyzing survey data, and uses its own AI to tease out trends and actionable insights. This can be especially useful when applied to sales and marketing campaigns for analyzing not just results but can also be used to identify ideal price points.

Systum is a BI software platform aimed at improving efficiency and productivity in wholesale markets, that looks to streamline and consolidate processes across multiple B2B and B2C channels. This means sales and order tracking, and there are a wide range of integration options including Amazon, eBay, and Quickbooks.

Adobe Analytics is a tool especially dedicated to tracking the customer journey online, and provides data to analyze how to more effectively engage with them according to their sources, ie, social media. It's able to work with complex databases to generate quick results, which can then be exported or printed easily.

Best business plan software of 2019

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 12:44 PM PDT

If you're looking for funding to start a new business, or expand an existing one, you'll need to be able to take a working business plan to your bank or investor.

The whole point of a business plan is that it allows you to critically evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, not least via your Unique Selling Point (USP) and make product or service comparisons with competitors.

Ultimately, a business plan will make financial forecasts and projections that will demonstratively prove why your business is a solid enough investment to risk putting money into.

Of course, even the best business plan relies on estimates and guesstimates, as it's impossible to predict market changes, developments, and future performance under such conditions.

However, a business plan shows that you have properly and thoroughly researched your market, and details the real potential of a new business opportunity, which can then be referenced by yourself and investors.

A business plan means that you're serious about business - serious enough that other people can comfortably put their money into it.

Here then are the best in business plan software to help you develop that roadmap to success.

  • Want your company or services to be added to this buyer’s guide? Please email your request to desire.athow@futurenet.com with the URL of the buying guide in the subject line.

Bizplan is the online business planning tool that claims usage of 30,000 startup founders from the Startups.co platform. They use a guided creator that can break the big project down into the component pieces that get tracked with a Progress Tracker, and expert guidance each step of the way including templates that can be dropped in, and completed, along with simple integration of visuals along the way.

Additional resources are also provided via the Bizplan Academy, with lessons on relevant topics, for example, “Building a Brand: How to Tell a Powerful Brand Story,” and “Critical Path Your Way to Higher Revenues,” among the many offerings. Those that need even more assistance also can take advantage of an expert consultation from a financial expert that starts at $999.

Plans start at $29 per month, but alternatively you can pay $249 for a year's license. For the serious business consultant, a lifetime license is available for $349.

PlanGuru is a comprehensive, and powerful software package in the business planning space. Education is provided via a series of case studies at their PlanGuru Univrsity and a whole slew of video tutorials.

The feature set includes flexible budgeting that can handle a simple small business, or a larger multi-department operating budget, and financial forecasting that uses multiple methods, including intelligent and turn-key methods - twenty methods in total. Historical results can also be imported with the general ledger import utility which can then applied to produce a rolling forecast. They also offer PlanGuru Launch, a service to bring in expertise that starts at $250 per hour of assistance.

A significant downside is the cost, with the least expensive plan costing $99 per month, which only includes a single user, and additional users cost $29 each per month. While there is no free trial, PlanGuru does offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

Enloop is a great choice for business planning software for the cash strapped business as it is the rare offering that has a free tier. Step up up to the next tier, and this is no barebones product, as it has over 100 currency symbols, can automatically generate bank-ready financial reports, and even has automated text writing that can sync with financial data to turn it into text. There is also a real time performance score assigned, that dynamically changes as the business plan is strengthened.

The plans start with the Free tier, which is limited to a single business plan with simple text, no images, and does not offer any advanced features. The next plan up is the Detailed plan, that for $19.95 monthly supports three business plans, and offers a significant 55% discount when paid annually, making it even better value.

LivePlan is business planning software that offers a simple pricing scheme as there is only a single plan to choose from. As they have a 15 year track record, they offer a clean and simple interface, that can create business plans that look like they were done by an expert consultant, and the software includes a live dashboard that can track day-to-day performance. Those with writer’s block will benefit from the over 500 included sample plans that can be turned to for inspiration.

Rather than complicate things with too many tiers to choose from, LivePlan only has a single offering for $11.66 per month if paid annually, or $19.95 per month on a rolling basis.

Business Sorter promises to simplify and speed up business planning, and claims to be able to flesh out a plan in an hour or two, via a novel 273 card sort system that covers many common situations.

The ability to reword cards is included, or also to add cards to the already expansive deck, so no worries if there is not a pre-made card for your situation. Unlike some sites that have videos, the educational resources here are provided as PDFs and Word files, which can be quicker to access, but harder to follow for some learners.

The lowest tier plan, Basic, starts at $10 monthly, with an annual discount of $80 on an annual basis, is fully featured, and includes up to three team leaders.

Other business plan software to consider

We've only covered some of the most popular business plan software platforms out there, but there are a number of other notables worth mentioning, plus a wide variety of providers of business plan templates. Below we'll briefly cover a range of some of the additional options out there that are worth considering to get your business plan right.

Go Business Plans is more of a consultancy than a software solution, but is worth mentioning for the simple fact that it's one of America's biggest business plan companies. While software might be able to do the job for you, if you're looking for significant funding, it's probably useful to get some professional advice, not least in terms of strategic planning, feasibility studies, and financial projections to ensure you have a solid base for your business plan.

Wise Business Plans provides a very wide range of templates to work from in constructing a business plan. These are particularly designed with funding in mind, no matter what kind of business you run. What is especially helpful is that Wise doesn’t simply deal with business plan templates for a diverse range of business types, the company also provides plan templates for franchises and non-profits.

Plan Writers is another bespoke service that essentially listens to what you want and then puts the plan together for you. Again, this technically falls outside of business plan "software", but the chances are you'll use a software package as a platform to build from, and Plan Writers can then help you build up from that base.

Business Plan Pro really is a business plan software platform, and one of the biggest selling ones over the past decade. What works particularly well here is that there are a huge number of plans and templates to start from, with additional support for planning financials and consultancy services on top, if required. The company also provides customers with access to a number of books and survey data sets, which offers additional value to the product.

Bplans is another provider of business plan templates, but goes beyond that with additional pitch and SWOT analysis templates. There are also business plan guides, industry reports, and a free course on writing a business plan. Bplans also publishes a lot of free-to-use articles on business planning, financials, and tax reporting, to help ensure you can keep your figures and projections accurate and compliant.

Sony is reportedly working on a new smartphone that rolls right up

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 06:30 AM PDT

While we wait for folding phones from Samsung and Huawei to go on sale, Sony is apparently working on some flexible display tech of its own – but in this case we're talking about a rollable phone rather than a foldable one.

Tipster Max J from AllAboutSamsung says that he has genuine intel about prototypes being worked on at Sony. Note that we're talking prototypes here, so the details could change before a full consumer launch.

A rollable Sony handset could be unveiled by the end of the year, the rumor goes, sporting a Snapdragon 855 chipset and 5G courtesy of the Qualcomm X50 Modem. With those specs, don't expect a cheap starting price.

Considering the lack of solid evidence to back up these claims, we wouldn't bet your house on them just yet. They are, however, an intriguing hint about where Sony and the rest of the industry might head next.

Joining the dots

We've previously seen patents from Sony detailing how rollable (and foldable) phone screens could work. We also know that LG – tipped to be supplying Sony with flexible screens – has the expertise to make displays that roll up.

Add in the news that the likes of LG and Samsung are apparently busy developing rollable smartphones of their own, and this new rumor about a Sony device starts to sound a lot more credible.

A couple of months ago we heard that Sony is prepping a 5G-capable, clamshell-style folding Xperia phone ready for launch in 2020, so next year could be quite the year for innovative Sony products.

In the meantime it's the IFA 2019 expo in Berlin in September, a show where Sony usually has a strong presence. We might hear more about the technology there.

Finished Stranger Things 3 already? Here’s what to watch on Netflix next

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 06:00 AM PDT

Stranger Things 3 has landed on Netflix, and it could just be the best season yet if early reviews are anything to go by.

One of the most popular shows on Netflix, Stranger Things season three joins our favorite bunch of kids once more, as they battle otherworldly beings, mysterious foes, and teenage growing pains.

All of this is set against heaps of colorful 80s nostalgia, harking back to the work of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King.

With all eight episodes of Stranger Things 3 available to stream in one go, many of us will have binged the entirety of season three already.

So, where do you go from Hawkins, Indiana? Aside from watching Stranger Things’ companion show, Beyond Stranger Things, there’s a plethora of spooktastic sci-fi flicks, 80s shows, and angsty teen dramas to keep you satiated while we wait for word of Stranger Things 4.

Read on for our pick of the best Netflix series to watch after Stranger Things.

Dark Netflix

1. Dark

If you're mourning the end of Stranger Things 3, why not try something a little more continental? Dark is a German-language supernatural thriller that, like Stranger Things, deals with disappearing children in a small town.

Part Scandi crime thriller and part drama, this intriguing series explores the fractured relationships and dark pasts of the townspeople in the wake of the disappearance.

There's plenty to watch too; season two has just arrived on Netflix, bringing the total episode count up to 18 nearly hour-long instalments.

GLOW

2. GLOW

A female wrestling comedy might seem like a slightly left-field suggestion if you're looking to fill a Stranger Things-shaped hole – but GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) is packed to the brim with the kind of day-glo 80s nostalgia that Stranger Things fans have come to love.

With a refreshing female-fronted cast and writers, GLOW demonstrates a brilliant balancing act between empowerment and exploitation. There are two seasons on Netflix already, and a third is confirmed to land on August 9.

Black Mirror

3. Black Mirror

For the uninitiated, Black Mirror is a series of standalone TV shows, each (usually) focusing on a hellish (and often darkly funny) vision of where technology, if abused, could lead us.

Season five of Black Mirror has just arrived on Netflix, and it could be the darkest yet – perfect for those who are craving a little nerdy dystopia having charged through Stranger Things 3 in record time.

Most episodes are feature-length, getting more ambitious with every series; season four saw the show go interactive with the critically acclaimed Bandersnatch episode.

Sex Education

4. Sex Education

If it's the angsty teen drama element that you miss most about Stranger Things, check out British comedy Sex Education.

The series follows socially awkward sixth-former Otis (who lives with his sex therapist mother) as he teams up with the smart and rebellious Maeve, to create a clinic for the school's sexually frustrated students.

While set in England, the show also has a weird 80s Americana vibe that means you won't feel too out of sorts if you jump into this straight after Stranger Things 3.

The OA

5. The OA

The OA could just rival Stranger Things in terms of, well, strangeness. This sci-fi series follows Marling, a blind woman who comes back with her sight restored after disappearing for many years.

With the second season now on Netflix, there's more to binge than ever before. If you love the weirdness of Stranger Things, this unsettling series could just keep that Netflix freak flag flying high.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 vs the QuietComfort 35 IIs: how do they compare?

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 05:00 AM PDT

Over the years, Bose has made a name for itself by creating some of the best noise-canceling headphones on the market; and now the audio brand hopes to continue that legacy with the new Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

They follow on from Bose’s highly-rated QuietComfort 35 II noise canceling headphones. Despite the popularity of the QuietComfort range, the new Headphones 700 are shaking things up with an all-new sleek design, and what Bose says is “breakthrough” noise cancelation technology.

So, which model is best for you? We take a look at the pros and cons of the wireless headphones so you can make an informed choice.

Price and availability

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 cost $399 in the US, and will be available for £349.95 when the launch in the UK on July 11. We’re still waiting on official Australian pricing and availability, but this works out at around AU$575 based on current conversion rates.

That’s about $50 / £20 more expensive than the Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones, which cost $350 (£330 / AU$500) at launch. It’s worth bearing in mind that the QC35 IIs could discounted during the Amazon Prime Day sales. The event kicks off on July 15 and will last for 48 hours, so keep your eyes peeled for any Bose headphones deals.

Design

The design of the two headphones are strikingly different; the new Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 eschew the clunkier build of its older sibling, getting rid of the pleated earcups, visible hinges, and bulky hardware.

The Bose QuietComfort 35 IIs on the other hand, have a build that’s more reminiscent of professional studio headphones – they don’t make as much of a statement as the 700s, but they might feel more sturdy.

Coming in black and silver, the Bose headphones 700 are based on a one-piece design; the stainless steel headband elegantly giving way to soft oval earcups with touch-sensitive housings.

They’re very lightweight, which is ideal if you’re going to be wearing them all day; however, that light build can feel a little flimsy, which is a problem both models suffer from.

QuietComfort 35 II

On the outside of the earcups there are a few preset buttons (more on those later); however, the majority of the Headphones 700’s functionality can be controlled using the touch-sensitive outer housing.

These controls feel pretty intuitive; simply swipe your finger up and down to control the volume, side to side to skip tracks, and tap twice to play and pause your music.

The QuietComfort 35 IIs however, rely on physical buttons for playback control; you have a power and pairing slider on the right earcup, as well as buttons for volume up/down and playback. The left earcup houses just one button for Google Assistant, though you can remap the button to toggle noise cancelation levels using Bose’s Android or iOS app.

Both headphones models come with traveling cases, but fold differently; the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 fold flat, while the QuietComfort 35 IIs fold inwardly.

Noise cancelation

Let’s start with the Bose QuietComfort 35 IIs – these headphones continued Bose’s legacy of creating brilliant noise-canceling headphones, and they do an excellent job of drowning out everything from the rumble of a train to muffling voices in the street you’re walking through.

Headphones like the QC 35 IIs can be really effective if you’re listening to music. If you’re making a phone call however, the person you’re speaking to can still hear everything that’s happening around you – which is where the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones come in.

Using an innovative eight-microphone system, these cans not only make your music sound better, but they also make your voice sound clearer to the person on the end of the line during phone calls. We saw this feature in action at a demonstration, and it seems to work astonishingly well.

So, if you make a lot of phone calls using your headphones, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 could be a more logical investment than their predecessors.

There are 11 noise cancelation settings (the QC35 II’s have three by comparison), which can be controlled via the Bose app; three of which can be selected as presets and toggled through using the physical button on the earcup.

We had the chance to test out some of the noise cancelation settings briefly, and we were impressed with how capable these headphones are at blocking out unwanted environmental sound.

Of course, without carrying out our full testing process it’s hard to say whether the Headphones 700 have better noise cancelation capabilities than the QuietComfort 35 IIs – but we can say for certain that the ANC on offer with the newest cans is more sophisticated than ever before.

Battery life and connectivity

Both the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 and the QuietComfort 35 IIs boast an impressive 20-hour battery life, and have a wireless range of 33 feet.

The Bluetooth technology supported by the newest cans is 5.0, a step up from the QC 35 II’s support for Bluetooth 4.1. This means you may find that the connection is more reliable with the 700s; saying that, we didn’t experience any connection dropouts while testing the older model.

Both models sport a 3.5mm jack, which means you can listen to them with a wired connection; some audiophiles believe this provides a superior level of audio quality compared to wireless listening, although these days, the difference is negligible if you’re using the best wireless headphones.

Smart features

The Bose QuietComfort 35 IIs were the first in the QuietComfort line to get a voice assistant built-in – in this case, Google Assistant.

To summon Google’s voice assistant, you simply have to press on the dedicated button and then speak to it as normal. As with any Google Assistant device, you can ask it to read headlines, add reminders, or myriad other questions. The Assistant will also read you your notifications as they come in, which is a nifty feature but may be redundant if you have a smartwatch already.

We found using Google Assistant with the QC 35 IIs to be pretty seamless during our testing, and we were impressed by the speed and accuracy of Google Assistant and how well the headphones were able to pick up our voice even on a crowded train and coffee shop.

Of course, the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 should be even better at picking up your voice if that eight-microphone system works as well as Bose claims.

They’re also a little more agnostic when it comes to voice assistants – you can use the dedicated button to summon Google Assistant or Apple’s Siri if you have an iPhone, after which you just need to use your voice as normal to give commands.

New to these cans however, is the ability to talk to Amazon’s Alexa right off the bat; by just saying Alexa’s wake word (which is ‘Alexa’, if you didn’t know already), the virtual assistant is summoned automatically. We haven’t tested this feature yet, but we will be sure to do so when we carry out our full review of the 700s.

So, if you have Alexa-compatible devices around your home already, the Bose Headphones 700s could be a convenient tool for controlling your smart home.

As both headphones support voice assistance, so which one is best for you comes down to which ecosystem you tend to use more – Apple, Google, or Amazon.

Sound quality

When we briefly tested the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, a spokesperson for the brand told us that the sound quality is comparable to that of the QuietComfort 35 IIs.

We need to spend more time with the headphones to make a true assessment of the sound quality on offer here, but the tracks we did hear sounded well-balanced, rich, and detailed – just like the QC 35 IIs.

However, we didn’t think the sound quality provided by the QuietComfort 35 IIs was extraordinary enough to be class-leading. While tonal balance is relatively neutral with a slight mid-bass bump, we found the sound to be somewhat soft when compared to the best noise-canceling headphones like the Sony WH1000X M3.

Takeaway

Without carrying out our full review process, it’s hard to say which of Bose’s noise-canceling headphones is superior – but it’s still possible to make an informed buying decision based on the specs on offer, as well as the design of both models.

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 offer a sleeker design, more choice when it comes to voice assistance, and more sophisticated noise-canceling technology, but they are also $50 more expensive than the QuietComfort 35 IIs.

Consumers won’t flock to 5G as quickly as they did with 4G

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 04:33 AM PDT

The adoption of the fifth generation (5G) of cellular technology will be slower than 4G in the consumer space due to various factors, an industry expert said. Speaking to TechRadar Middle East, Sukhdev Singh, vice-president at market research and analysis services provider Kantar AMRB, said that the growth of 5G in the consumer space will be limited due to the lack of devices such as smartphones and routers, apart from the high price point.

The cost of ZTE Axon Pro 5G smartphone is AED 5,833 in the UAE.  Huawei and Oppo will be launching their own 5G devices soon but prices are not yet published. Pricing for the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G is expected to be similar to the 4G model which currently retails at AED 3,699. Huawei is expected to formally announce the pricing and availability for the Mate 20 X 5G next week.

According to research firm IHS Markit, 37 million first-generation 5G smartphones are expected to be shipped this year globally and will increase to 120 million devices in 2020, reaching over 525 million devices in 2023.

Bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ situation

Singh said that consumers may not see a huge benefit from 5G as 4G is adequate for most consumers. “It is a bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ situation. 5G will enable new technologies and if these new technologies find ground, then it will help 5G grow. There was a big shift from 3G to 4G technology that offered a completely a new user experience. The current 4G is more than enough for a device to stream 4K videos or have a voice or video chat,” he said.

Previous cellular technologies such as 3G and 4G were meant for human interactions but 5G is the platform for machine-to-machine communications. Moreover, he said that 5G is for extremely heavy bandwidth or data-hungry applications such as cloud-based augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

The real change will be on the enterprise side, he said, through a combination of productivity gains from businesses automating processes, They will not only benefit from the high speed but also the lower latency which will improve efficiency, reliability and the number of connected devices.

4G still has room for growth

The latency for 4G is between 15-20 milliseconds but for 5G, it is one millisecond, and the data speeds are about 100 times faster than 4G and provide speeds of up to 20Gbps.

So, Singh said the growth will come from the business-to-business side rather than the business-to-consumer side.

“The consumers’ shift from 4G to 5G will happen only after 2020 as telecom operators haven’t launched plans for 5G and, at the same time, the network coverage will be limited and it could also be more expensive. There is still room for 4G penetration rate to grow as there are still people at the bottom end of the pyramid still on the 3G space, especially in some Middle Eastern countries, as they still lack wider coverage,” he said.

The 5G network will, initially, be available in certain hotspots only.

5G will account for 15% of global mobile connections

According to GSMA Intelligence, publisher of industry reports and research for GSMA, which represents the interests of more than 750 mobile operators globally and over 350 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem, said in its latest report that 5G connections will reach 1.4 billion worldwide by 2025 and will account for 15% of total global mobile connections.

During the period, 4G will account for 59%, 3G with 20% and 2G with 5%.

In the Middle East and North Africa region, 3G contributed 40% share in 2018, followed by 2G with 37% and 4G with a 23% share.

In 2025, the report said that the technology mix in the region is expected to be with 4G by 52%, followed with 3G by 32%, 2G by 10% and 5G by 6% while the Gulf States will account for 16% of the 5G adoption by 2025.

Sing said that there will be a major uptake for 5G in the fixed-line business but it will be expensive initially.

16 more countries to go live with 5G this year

Even though some countries have launched 5G services commercially, there will be 16 more countries expected to go live by the end of this year and expected to have 10 million 5G connections, according to GSMA Intelligence.

The UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have gone live but major 5G deployments will happen post-2020, 64 markets over the 2021–2025 period, bringing the total to 116.

According to GSMA Intelligence, Asia Pacific will account for 65 per cent share, followed by North America with 28 per cent, Europe with five per cent and the Middle East and North Africa with two per cent.

Singh said that 5G is seen as a technology for the long term and telecom operators have a “major role to play” in the 5G space as they are becoming content enablers to consumers and trying to increasingly become a single point of contact for consumers to avail a lot of services.

“Telecoms will continue to be the dominant source of revenue for operators in the near to medium term, but they are exploring new opportunities in a fast-changing competitive landscape and they have the potential to add new revenue streams and add business capabilities, thereby playing a key role in the future digital ecosystem,” he said.

The GSMA Intelligence report said that 5G technologies are expected to contribute $2.2 trillion to the global economy by 2034, 5.3 per cent of GDP, compared to $1.1 trillion of economic value generated from global mobile ecosystem in 2018, with key sectors such as manufacturing, utilities and professional/financial services benefiting the most from the new technology.

Boost your PC storage performance by 30x with this free trick

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 03:28 AM PDT

When it comes to storage though, random access memory (RAM) remains the best - in terms of speed - that money can buy, at least until someone comes up with user-installed HBM (high bandwidth memory). Using widely available free, open source software (ImDisk), system memory (or simply computer memory as it is often called) can be converted into usable storage known as a RAM Disk.

What is RAM disk?

What the software does is ring-fencing a block of memory (as defined by the user) which is then used as a virtual hard drive and can be mounted and recognised under Windows. You can (and should) configure them as RAID-0 array and you can spawn and destroy them within minutes.

Couple of points to note though; firstly, use applications that do not usually use memory for caching. Also, bear in mind that RAM disks are not persistent; once your computer is switched off (which is different from sleeping or hibernating), the content of the computer's memory is erased. But since computers nowadays usually opt for the later two, the content can be stored for longer.

Ultimate privacy

Because of this unique property, memory can be viewed as the ultimate guardian of someone’s privacy as you cannot undelete or recover data that has been wiped. So much so that one vendor touts the privacy benefits of RAMdisk, as a virtual storage device.

Dataram claims that your memory will zero fill on stop or shutdown instantly, clearing RAM contents for complete unrecoverable data sanitizing, unlike hard disks or web browser "safe modes", thereby enhancing internet privacy, security and malware protection.

One popular VPN provider, ExpressVPN, went as far as running an entire VPN server in memory. The TrustedServer initiative, as it is known, is different from traditional containerization on bare metal servers as there’s no host OS to speak off. The stack integrates the host OS and is loaded every time the server is switched on.

Super fast speeds

Of course, the reason why you want to use RAM Disk is because it is fast, absurdly fast. Starting with as little as 4GB of memory, you can install frequently accessed applications (check our list of portable software) that will benefit from phenomenally high read and write speeds, which in theory would mean faster load times and far snappier performance.

A SATA SSD will reach about 500MBps in read/write speeds. We created a RAMDisk array on the Eurocom Tornado F7W mobile workstation (it comes with 128GB of RAM) and we hit read/write speeds of up to 8.7/15.8GBps, that’s a speed improvement of up to 30 times! (at least according to CrystalDiskMark).

Could we have gone even further? E.g. by putting multiple RAM Disks in a RAID array? Sadly no. One needs to remember that there is an upper limit to the memory’s bandwidth, plus there is some overhead in RAID-0 processing as it is done in software within the operating system.

As a spokesperson for Softperfect, another popular RAM disk software developer puts it, the best and fastest way is to use a regular RAM disk without Hard Disk Emulation and with an exFAT file system. In our test though, we saw no real difference between exFAT and NTFS.

Unlike most upgrades, a RAM Disk is technically free; you just decide on allocating your computer’s resources differently. Older computers are more likely to benefit from it, especially those with a hard disk drive and plenty of memory like old servers or workstations.

Running Windows entirely in RAM?

To our knowledge, there’s only one piece of software that will allow you to clone your Windows installation, use it and destroy it after use. And that’s HyperOS 2016 whose tagline is “One Windows is not enough”; intriguingly, it - as well as a number of other vendors like Adata and Gigabyte - used to have a physical RAM disk drive as well, one that had a battery and memory slots.

You could fill that with cheap memory and use it as a traditional hard disk drive. One of the issues you would run into though would be that you would need to plug it into a slot that is bandwidth constrained, negating any performance gains. Then SSD came and changed the game.

So, maybe someone will be able to run Windows entirely in memory for the ultimate performance beater but some hardware issues will have to be ironed out beforehand.

Should you get your own RAM Disk?

Like super cars, RAM Disks suffer from diminishing returns as they will be hampered by other bottlenecks around the system. Yes, they are fast but only as fast as your system will allow them to be and you will need to be very much aware of the limitations of such a storage system.

Not all software will work with it and since your OS will still reside on a slower storage subsystem, the potential for much better performance is lost. Still, with RAM prices almost at an all time low (32GB for $102 at Newegg), now could well be the time for some serious experimentation to fuel your need for speed.

Nintendo is ‘investigating’ 5G technology

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 02:53 AM PDT

Nintendo has told shareholders that it’s “investigating” advancing technologies such as 5G and cloud streaming but has explained that it won’t simply “chase trends” for the sake of it.

During the 79th Annual General Meeting  for Shareholders, Nintendo representatives were asked directly about how the company will respond to recent advancements in VR, 5G and “alliances between rivals in the arena of cloud gaming”.

With the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft being heavily rumoured to put a lot of focus on streaming and Google entering the streaming arena with its own Stadia later this year, there was some concern that Nintendo has been “a little slow” when it comes to keeping up with the competition.

Keeping up with the competition

However, just because Nintendo isn’t promoting any plans for these new technologies doesn’t mean it’s ignoring them entirely. In response to the question, Shigeru Miyamoto offered assurance that the company has been working on new technologies like 5G, VR and streaming “from the very beginning, and have been experimenting with them in a variety of ways”.

As far as cloud streaming is concerned, Miyamoto sees it becoming “more widespread in the future” but added that he has “no doubt that there will continue to be games that are fun because they are running locally and not on the cloud.”

These sentiments were echoed by Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa who said that while Nintendo can’t see all games becoming cloud games any time soon, it is aware that it “must keep up with such changes in the environment.”

Big buzzwords

It was Nintendo director and senior executive officer Ko Shiota who focused in directly on the latest buzzword: 5G.

“5G can send a large amount of data without latency. We are aware that this technology has been gaining a lot of attention, and Nintendo is also investigating it.”

However, Shiota added that Nintendo doesn’t “only chase trends in technology.”

As with VR and cloud streaming, Nintendo won’t be jumping straight onto a 5G bandwagon and will instead “think about both how the technology will be applied to gameplay and what new experiences and gameplay we can offer consumers as a result of that application.”

Not only that, cost will be a big consideration for pushing forward with 5G. According to Shiota “It’s difficult to use even an outstanding technology if the cost is too high, so we will continue to also thoroughly investigate the cost of new technologies.”

It’s already known that Nintendo has been experimenting with streaming cloud-based games on the Switch in Japan (via Kotaku) but doing so requires a high quality WiFi connection. 5G connections would certainly make streaming on the Switch a more portable experience, but it seems likely that Nintendo won’t pursue it further unless there is sufficient demand at the right price.

Given 5G has only just gone live in a handful of cities across the world and is still experiencing some teething problems, it seems safe to say that Nintendo still has some time to experiment further.

Google is adding a helpful play button to the toolbar in Chrome

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 02:30 AM PDT

Google appears to be on a mission to improve the online media playback experience: not long after adding support for keyboard controls, it's now experimenting with a play button that appears on Chrome's toolbar.

As spotted by ZDNet, the idea is you can quickly stop and restart audio and video files playing in a tab, without having to hunt through the page itself. The feature is now live in the early Canary edition of the browser.

It's part of what Google is calling the Global Media Controls (GMC) package, as per Canary's code, and it should make life easier if you want to take a break from your computer or quickly silence something that's playing.

Testing, testing

It would appear the playback button currently works with sites like Spotify, YouTube and Vimeo, though obviously it's early days for the feature, and Google's engineers are going to improve compatibility and reliability over time.

Quite how long it'll take for the button to make its way to the stable version of Chrome is difficult to say – but it shouldn't be too long before you're able to play and pause music and video from the browser button.

It's perhaps even more effective than the old mute button that used to appear on Chrome tabs, because in this case you don't need to spend time looking for the tab where the audio or video is playing.

While the feature is a little buggy at the moment, you can try it out for yourself by installing Canary and then enabling the "chrome://flags/#global-media-controls" flag (type that address into the browser's omnibox at the top of the screen).

Epic Games Store: exclusives, early access, and how it could take on Steam

When the Epic Games Store was announced in December 2018, it seemed to come out of nowhere with big plans and bigger ambitions. Since then, it’s made itself a staple storefront and something of a target for controversy.

While Epic Games has a long and illustrious history in making games, especially shooters – Unreal Tournament, and the free-to-play Fortnite, to name just two – the Epic Games online store is the result of several developments for the company.

Fortnite has proved a huge money-spinner for Epic, as a massive online game that's technically free-to-play but comes with numerous cosmetic items and skins you can pay to upgrade your character with – and has become a global phenomenon off the back of it.

Epic had to build up a huge infrastructure for managing those transactions, which placed it in good stead for opening its own store for PC and Mac titles.

But why open its own video game marketplace? Can't you get everything on the Steam Store anyway? Read on below for everything you need to know about the Epic Games Store.

[Update: Epic Games is continuing to pull in some strong timed exclusives despite criticism. Since its first E3 in June it’s confirmed that Shenmue 3, Borderlands 3 and Watch Dogs: Legion will be exclusives for the store.]

What is the Epic Games Store?

The Epic Games Store is a marketplace for video games you can play on your PC and Mac. It has a website where you can browse and download individual games – some of them exclusive to the store – though for the dedicated application you'll be downloading an install file from the Epic Games Store website.

It's free to make an Epic account, which you can link with a PlayStation, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, or even Nintendo account for your login details – though if you play something like Fortnite you'll have an Epic account already.

The service currently has a "hand-curated" selection of titles for PC and Mac, with plans to expand to "Android and other platforms throughout 2019" – so you could well be buying some mobile games here rather than the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The argument for Epic Games Store

Running out of steam

The elephant in the room here is Steam: the massive PC game marketplace launched by Valve in 2003.

The Steam Store has grown to immense proportions, with tens of thousands of titles available and a vice-grip monopoly on where most PC gamers today buy their games.

Not that everyone is happy with Steam, though. The platform is bloated, and Steam has little incentive to clean things up as long as the money is coming in. Its decision to allow 'controversial' content on its platform, as long as it was technically legal, has also brought a string of bad publicity.

There's been outcry from smaller-size developers over how Steam's algorithms prioritize big-name AAA titles like Fallout 4 and Far Cry 5, making it difficult for indie titles to be discovered if they don't already have a large marketing budget. Not to mention the 30% cut Steam takes on everything published on its platform, which, although an industry standard, seems harder and harder to justify for devs whose games simply aren't being seen.

Real community

Epic's game store is turning heads specifically for its 'developer-first' focus. Here devs will only pay a 12% cut to Epic, while games built in Epic's Unreal engine will see the usual 5% surcharge waived.

"As developers ourselves, we wanted two things: a store with fair economics, and a direct relationship with players," Epic said in a blog post.

Devs will control their own game pages, with no external advertisements taking attention away from their titles. They'll also be able to reach players who have purchased their games, with "game updates and news" sent directly through the Epic Games Store newsfeed, or via email.

The Epic Games Store also links up to Epic's 'Support-A-Creator' program, which allows you to send a slice of the game's revenue to YouTube or Twitch streamers who first got you interested in the game.

It's a community-focused approach, and one that could chime with many players and developers tired of fighting Steam's algorithms for the service they want.

Epic Games Store exclusives

Part of what's turning heads is the Epic Game Store's platform exclusives – when the platform launched it announced it would have exclusives like sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds (Obsidian) and supernatural action game Control (Remedy). Despite some backlash from players, Epic continues to double down on exclusives and has now secured big titles like Shenmue 3, Borderlands 3 and Watch Dogs: Legion as exclusives for its store front.

Not all of these titles are permanent exclusives, of course. Shenmue 3 and Borderlands 3, for example, will come to Steam after a set period.

Other confirmed PC exclusives include Afterparty (Night School), Journey to the Savage Planet, Ashen, Darksiders III, Phoenix Point, Journey, Telltale's The Walking Dead: The Final Season – and Supergiant Games' upcoming title Hades (now in Early Access).

Tom Clancy's The Division 2 will not be released on Steam, as publisher Ubisoft has opted to make the PC version of the title a semi-exclusive release on the Epic Games Store. According to a report by Polygon, Ubisoft and Epic Games are also teaming up to bring select future Ubisoft PC titles to the Epic Games Store. Watch Dogs: Legion and Anno 1800 are now confirmed to be among them.

In addition, Epic Games and Deep Silver have announced a partnership to release Metro Exodus for PC as a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store. This means Metro Exodus will not arrive on the Steam store until February 14, 2020.

In response, Valve released the following statement:

"Notice: Sales of Metro Exodus have been discontinued on Steam due to a publisher decision to make the game exclusive to another PC store.

"The developer and publisher have assured us that all prior sales of the game on Steam will be fulfilled on Steam, and Steam owners will be able to access the game and any future updates or DLC through Steam.

"We think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period. We apologize to Steam customers that were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15th release date, but we were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know."

Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, has said he believes that ultimately the disruptive strategy of securing exclusives will benefit gamers. Taking to Twitter, Sweeney said it was the only way to end the 70/30 revenue split that’s forced on developers. When developers make gains, players will see benefits.

This isn’t convincing everyone, though. The announcement that Shenmue 3 would be a timed Epic Games store exclusive has left many of its Kickstarter backers disgruntled, feeling that they’re being forced to use a store front they don’t want to support in order to play the game when it’s first released. Epic Games has confirmed that it will be issuing refunds to those players.

Epic Games Store free games

You read that right. While players can sign up to use the store for free, you'll also get free games bundled in every week or two weeks, in the vein of PlayStation Plus or Xbox's Games with Gold.

If you get the game during its free period it’s yours to keep for good so it’s worth popping into the store now and again to see what’s on offer. Previous titles include Oxenfree, The Witness, City of Brass and Rime.

  • Current free game on Epic Games Store: Overcooked (July 4 - July 11)
  • The next free game on Epic Games Store: Torchlight (July 11 - July 18)

The free-to-play Fortnite alone is sure to draw players in, while the steady release of free titles – and good ones, so far – won't hurt either.

Whether Epic can take on a behemoth like Steam is uncertain, but it already looks to be carving out a space in digital distribution that many of us have been waiting for.

Cricket World Cup 2019 live stream: how to watch every game online from anywhere

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 01:03 AM PDT

Make the most of the 2019 Cricket World Cup while it lasts - we've been spoilt rotten with the finest cricket on the planet every day for the last few weeks. But as the group stages come to a close and the semi-finals come in to view, the most exciting matches are yet to come. The good news is that you've come to the right place to find out how to live stream Cricket World Cup action regardless of where you live.

Although most countries have paid-for TV viewing only (including hosts England) some nations are luckier - for example, Australians can watch their boys and the latter stages on Channel 9, while Pakistan have every match free in the English language on the state-owned PTV.

10 of the world's elite cricket-playing countries are competing title of best ODI team on Earth with only one to be left standing by the end on July 14. It's the 12th incarnation of Cricket World Cup and hosts England went into it as pre-tournament favourites but only just squeezed through to the latter stages - thanks largely to some big hitting from the likes of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow.

India have the world's two top ICC ODI ranked batsmen (Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma) and the number one bowler (Jasprit Bumrah) and quite rightly have been a feared force. But perhaps most attention has been on reigning champions Australia, as they welcome back suspended duo Steve Smith and David Warner - both have managed to get some serious runs under their belts already in one of the tournament's most threatening teams. New Zealand have picked up some very strong wins indeed to reach the semi-finals.

We've enjoyed it so far, but there's still some serious cricket still to come. If you want to know where you'll be able to watch every single match, we'll tell you exactly where you can catch them online with a Cricket World Cup live stream.

How to watch the 2019 Cricket World Cup from outside your country

You don't have to miss a single minute of Cricket World Cup - even if you're abroad and discover that your home broadcaster's online coverage is geo-blocked (we hate it when that happens).

If that happens to you and you're desperate to watch that domestic coverage, there's still a way to get it that doesn't involve putting your security at risk with some dodgy, illegal stream from Reddit. You can simply use a VPN to login back to your country that is broadcasting the actions, and it's really easy to do:

What is the format of the 2019 Cricket World Cup?

The Cricket World Cup is a ten-team tournament. Each country plays each other in a round-robin format, after which the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals. The two winning semi-finalists then get to face off in the final on Sunday, July 14.

How long do Cricket World Cup matches usually last?

Most 2019 Cricket World Cup matches will start at 10.30am BST and end early evening – around 6.30pm BST. A number of day/night games will start at 1.30pm BST and finish under floodlights at around 9pm BST.

Cricket World Cup matches broadly follow the rules of One Day Internationals, with each side facing 50 overs within a 210-minute time limit. Add in drinks breaks for each side and a 30 to 40 minutes innings break and matches can run up to nine hours in length. Some matches are much shorter however - England’s capitulation to New Zealand in the 2015 World Cup saw play wrapped up within four-and-a-half hours, with the Kiwis reaching their 123-run target in just 12 overs.

What teams are competing in this year's Cricket World Cup?

Afghanistan
Having made their maiden World Cup appearance in 2015, Afghanistan aren't likely to be on anybody's list of pre-match favourites.

Australia
The five-time winners suffered a blow with injury ruling out fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, but are boosted by the return of key batsman David Warner after serving a ban for ball tampering.

Bangladesh
With outside odds of 80/1 to win the trophy, Bangladesh will be hoping talismanic batsman Tamim Iqbal continues his excellent ODI record which has seen him clock up over 5,000 runs.

England
The hosts are clear favourites going in to the tournament. Captained by Eoin Morgan, since the last World Cup England have beaten every country competing in the tournament in a one-day series with the exception of Afghanistan.

India
Their recent home ODI defeat to Australia doesn’t bode well, but India will be hoping to repeat their 1983 triumph which saw them win the World Cup on English soil.

New Zealand
Having been sensational throughout the tournament, the Kiwis reached their first ever Cricket World Cup final in 2015, only to fall short at the final hurdle against Australia. A strong top order of Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham should see them in contention again this time.

Pakistan
Having played a recent test series in England, Pakistan come into the tournament well prepared. Tipped by many to at least reach the semis, the tournament’s most unpredictable side stand a good wildcard chance of glory.

South Africa
The Proteas come into the World Cup in fine form having won nine of their last 11 ODI series, however injuries in the run up to key stars like Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Dale Steyn will raise concerns about their chances.

Sri Lanka
A run of just one win in the last 11 games suggest the 1996 winners will struggle in 2019. Much will depend on what form former captain and key batsman Angelo Mathews will be in if they are to get out of their current rut.

West Indies
Like Sri Lanka, the ODI form of the West Indies in recent times has fallen off a cliff. However, the emergence of Shimron Hetmyer and powerful batsman Shai Hope mean there’s some sense of optimism for a decent showing at the World Cup.

What grounds are being used for the Cricket World Cup?

The Oval, London
Established in 1845, the home of Surrey County Cricket Club played host to the first-ever Test match on English soil between England and Australia in 1880.

Trent Bridge, Nottingham

Home of Nottinghamshire CCC, the 17,500-capacity ground will host five World Cup matches, including England vs Pakistan.

Bristol County Ground, Bristol
Built in 1889, and subsequently bought by WG Grace, the ground has been home to Gloucestershire CCC ever since.

Hampshire Bowl, Southampton
The 17,000-capacity ground will host ICC Cricket World Cup fixtures for the first time in 2019, with five matches taking place at the venue.

The County Ground, Taunton
Three World Cup fixtures will be held at the County Ground Taunton, home of Somerset County Cricket Club.

Old Trafford, Manchester
Lancashire County Cricket Club’s ground has the honour of hosting the most 2019 Cricket World Cup matches with six games set to be played there, including one of the semi-finals.

Edgbaston, Birmingham
Warwickshire CCC’s ground was the scene of the 1999 semi-final showdown between Australia and South Africa - arguably the greatest Cricket World Cup game of all time.

Headingley, Leeds
Adjoined by Headingley Rugby Stadium, the complex is home to Leeds Rhinos rugby league and Yorkshire Carnegie rugby union clubs as well Yorkshire County Cricket Club. The cricket ground has hosted Test matches since 1899 and has a capacity of 18,350.

Lord's, London
Widely referred to as the Home of Cricket, the iconic north London ground will host the 2019 Cricket World Cup Final.

The Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street
English cricket’s most northerly ground is also one of its most picturesque. Home to Durham CCC, the stadium is overlooked by the 14th-century Lumley Castle.

Cardiff Wales Stadium
The single ground in this year’s World Cup that is based outside of England, Glamorgan County Cricket Club’s stadium will host four fixtures during the tournament.

Fixerman is out on the street to rescue you from tech-related issues

Posted: 07 Jul 2019 01:02 AM PDT

Necessity is the mother of all inventions and has again proved true in the case of a Dubai-based start-up Fixerman.

“Fixerman is a one-stop shop for tech-related issues. What we are trying to do is solve problems for customers who have issues with gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. The pain point we identified was the phones. The name was coined in such a way that eventually, we will fix all consumer electronics devices,” Jassim Bangara, CEO of Fixerman, told TechRadar Middle East.

Bangara said that he had a horrible experience in trying to fix his phone two years ago and that forced him to think about setting up the business. “We went into market research for more than a year to understand the market scale and scope and came out with startling discoveries,” he said.

Bangara’s research showed that apart from the lack of quality service providers in the market, the hand-held device [phone] is an important part of a person’s life.

Smartphone is more valuable than wallet

“It has proven that among your phone and the wallet, the phone is more valuable as you are more connected to it. If you lose your passport, you go to your consulate and the police take it seriously and there is a system for that. Same is the case for the wallet as the credit or debit cards are the most important.

“You call up your bank and the cards can be obtained. But in the case of a phone, there is no way to get it back if lost. There are ways to get it fixed, either from an authorised service centre or from an unauthorised service centre, but there is a huge turnaround time to get the device back,” he said.

Even though the job will get done, he said that almost 90% of the unauthorised service centres are using extremely poor quality parts.

“From our research, we found that there is a standard or best practice for hospitals, manufacturing sectors, etc. In the service sector, there are standards but most of them don’t follow the standards,” Bangara said.

Electro-static discharge-compliant van

Bangara claims that his service centres and the van with the built-in laboratory are the first to be electro-static discharge (ESD) compliant and the van is also the world’s first solar-powered mobile service unit.

When asked about his decision to launch a mobile business, he said that people are used to a certain level of convenience and to ease the pain of finding and going to the service centre.

“We provide three kinds of services – I will come to you with the van and fix it, I will take the device and fix it or customers can come to our open-kitchen concept studio at Business Bay,” he said.

Moreover, he said that Fixerman offers a two-year warranty on their fixes with OEM parts and three-month warranty for non-OEM parts. “All our technicians come with a minimum of two years training and five years of experience and also meets the standards of Apple Authorised Service Provider,” he said.

Ziad Bangara, Chief Marketing Officer at Fixerman, said that if a device is beyond repairable, it goes to recycling with the customer’s consent.

“More than 80% of the population doesn’t know that a device can be recycled. We go and pick up the non-repairable device for e-waste. E-waste is a global and pressing issue. On average, a person in the UAE creates 18 kilos of e-waste per year,” he said. The company has tied up with Dubai-based Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), a non-governmental professional working group, founded in 1991.

Fixerman has 12 business-to-business clients and more than 6,000 repeated customers under its belt. It mainly covers Dubai sometimes Sharjah and Ajman on a case by case.

“We do have plans to expand into other emirates and other GCC countries by 2020.  We have raised AED 1m through private funds and seek to raise AED 2m for expansion,” Bangara said.

UFC 239 live stream: how to watch Jones vs Santos tonight from anywhere

Posted: 06 Jul 2019 04:21 PM PDT

Welcome to Paradise! It's time for MMA fans to turn their attention to the Octagon in Las Vegas. That's where Jon Jones and Thiago Santos - as well as plenty more UFC stars - will do battle tonight, and you're in the right place to discover how to get a UFC 239 live stream - it doesn't even matter where in the world you are.

Jon Jones has certainly had a stellar but often controversial career in the Octagon. Defeating Daniel Cormier four years ago for an unprecedented eighth straight Light Heavyweight title defence should have been the apex, but he was later stripped of the title for testing positive in a drug test for benzoylecgonine. That wasn't the first or last misdemeanor, with DUIs, homophobic slurs and out-of-Octagon scuffles all dogging his career.

But you can't deny Jones's talent or record. He has only one MMA loss to his name in a decade-long career, and that UFC Light Heavyweight belt has been an almost permanent fixture around his waist. Veteran Thiago Santos will have to be at his very best to even lay a scratch on Jones during their title fight in Vegas tonight.

But that isn't the night's only big fight at UFC 239 as the awesome Amanda Nunes puts her Women's Bantamweight belt on the line against the official #1 rated bantamweight contender, Holly Holm. Both have wins against the legendary Ronda Rousey on their record - this should be a classic. And then there's the still-undefeated welterweight Ben 'Funky' Askren taking on Jorge Masvidal, while European fans are represented by Polish Jan Blachowicz as he faces Luke Rockhold.

Whoever you're cheering on during today's MMA action, we’ll show you how to live stream UFC 239’s main card from anywhere in the world - for US viewers, you should just head straight to ESPN+.

Live stream UFC 239 from outside your country

Worry not if you're a huge UFC fan but aren't in the US to watch that ESPN+ coverage tonight. If you find the coverage is geo-blocked, you can try using a VPN to change your IP address to a US server and watch this week's main card just as if you were back at home.
