F1 live stream: how to watch today's US Grand Prix 2019 online from anywhere

Today could well be the day that Lewis Hamilton secures his sixth drivers' title at the US Grand Prix. He only managed to be the fifth fastest driver in qualification, but just a few points will be enough. Can the Mercedes man do it? You can find out with an F1 live stream of the event from wherever you are.

The United States Grand Prix was voted the best race of 2018 on the official F1 site. As if that wasn't enough to set expectations high for 2019, this could be the race that lets Hamilton take his sixth title, making him an elite driving legend. This is going to be an intense race.

Now Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari can only hope to grasp second and fourth places respectively. Last year saw Kimi Raikkonen win this race for Ferrari but the four years before that were all Hamilton wins, with Vettel before that in 2013. The year before that, in 2012, Vettel set the track lap record at 1:39.347, but Hamilton ultimately won that race, too!

Lewis Hamilton - at 363 points - now has a 74-point lead lead over teammate Valtteri Bottas, with only three races and a total of 78 points still available to any one driver.

All that means that all Hamilton has to do at Austin is get eighth place or better and he's won the title, regardless of Bottas' finishing position. If Bottas doesn't win this race then Hamilton will be crowned champion, regardless of his finishing position.

You can see all the exciting racing using an F1 live stream from anywhere in the world – here's how.

Apple's updated patent points to a wrap-around display for the iPhone

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 06:30 AM PST

Rumors of a wrap-around iPhone screen have been floating around for years, but a newly updated patent shows Apple is still very much interested in the technology – even if it isn't going to be ready in time for the iPhone 12.

As reported by Patently Apple, Apple has registered a continuation patent on the wrap-around display filing that we've seen before. Essentially, it's appending some new information on an existing patent, or tweaking the details that have already been logged.

So while this patent isn't completely new, the fact that it's been updated shows that Apple is still seriously considering this technology. Whether it actually makes it into a finished product remains to be seen.

New information added to the patent mentions the "continuous loop" of a glass display around a device: a screen that would function on the front and the back of your iPhone.

Apple patent

Other phone makers are looking at similar ways to innovate on the standard glass-and-metal slab design we've now become so used to. The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha features a wrap-around screen, though it's being labeled as a concept device.

In other words, it's for early adopters, and it might not work terribly well. Apple is typically very cautious with any new technology, and won't push out any hardware to consumers unless it's sure that it's ready.

Samsung is another company with a patent for wrap-around screens, and has been pushing the display over the edges of its Galaxy phones for several years now. Could wrap-around be the new foldable?

Whatever Apple's plans, it seems unlikely that the 2020 iPhone 12 will have anything quite so innovative. One of the more recent rumors about the handset suggests it will come with a screen sporting a 120Hz refresh rate.

4 ways Disney Plus could beat Netflix – and 4 ways it could fall behind

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 05:00 AM PST

Disney Plus is on the horizon, with the streaming service’s first few territories set to get a whole lot of Disney in the coming weeks, and there are already signs that it’s going to be a successful start.

Sure, there still isn’t a Disney Plus UK launch date, but there’s still plenty that the House of Mickey is doing right. From high resolution streaming to a nostalgia-packed launch catalogue, Disney Plus has possibly the most anticipated streaming service launch we’ve ever seen.

Obviously it’s not a fair comparison in some ways; when Netflix first launched its OTT service, there simply wasn’t the same market for streaming that there is now. And Disney has the kind of content catalogue that most platforms can only dream of having at launch.

As the days until launch trickle out, we’ve brought together what we think are the 4 best things working in Disney Plus’ favor (+), and what could stop it from achieving its full potential or market dominance (–).

+ Single tier pricing

Single. Tier. Pricing. We’ve gotten so used to streaming services with various pricing plans and subscription models – whether Netflix’s Basic, Standard and Premium plans, or Hulu’s ad-supported tiers – that the single tier for the Disney Plus price feels refreshingly simple. For just $6.99 / AU$8.99 (around £5) you get access to the whole library, with no caveats or catches outside of your territory.

+ 4K HDR for all

Sure, most things on Disney Plus won’t be in 4K resolution, or HDR (high dynamic range), but the premium video technologies are now found on an increasing number of content providers – with enough 4K TVs in use to really warrant it. By including these features in the single price tier, Disney is ensuring anyone who wants to access that level of picture quality can, and with so many blockbuster Disney and Marvel movies coming to the service, that’s going to be a crucial perk for a lot of viewers.

+ Content from the dawn of time

Well, not quite. But with TV shows and films going all the way back to the 1930s – starting with Snow White & The Seven Dwarves – there’s a spread of content unlike anything else you’ll find online.

You may not want to watch a lot of the older stuff, aside from a few curios and classics, but to get such a historical catalogue of Disney branded titles is nothing short of a marvel.

The Mandalorian Trailer #2

+ Dedicated exclusive shows

Somewhere where Disney Plus has an advantage: it’s already a content creator. Whereas the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime started producing shows and films to circumvent licensing fees and gain more of a brand identity, Disney has decades worth of production experience and hordes of studios it can leverage to create for the service that will keep fans coming back and subscribing.

We’re already seeing this with the new Star Wars TV shows on Disney Plus, including launch title The Mandalorian – and Marvel shows focusing on Loki, Hawkeye, and The Falcon & The Winter Soldier. (Not to mention new animated series and spin-offs from a host of lesser-known characters, even including Forky from Toy Story 4.) But with massively expanded MCU and Star Wars universes, there are plenty of fans desperate to consume all the lore that they can, and Disney Plus can give it to them.

But positives aside, what could Disney Plus end up doing wrong?

– Restricted releases

If you’re focusing on all the things Disney Plus will give you easy access to, it’s easy to forget that Disney can also restrict that access elsewhere. We’ve already heard about American movie theaters losing rights to screen classic 20th Century Fox movies like The Fly, Omen, or Alien, and there’s a clear knock-on effect for film enthusiasts who don’t want to settle for a living room experience. Bad blood over this seems certain.

– Same old, same old

Disney Plus will live and die on its tentpole franchises, including Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar. But the danger of producing so much content within these channels is that Disney ends up fatiguing its audience with a one-note monoculture of endlessly similar sequels and instalments.

Disney’s acquisition of so many studios and IP, notwithstanding the advantages it gives to Disney Plus subscribers, could easily oversaturate the market with Disney-minded entertainment and end up being a dangerous thing for diversity across the market.

– Not so global launches

Disney Plus could be a victim of its own hype, in that the service won’t be launching worldwide even though there’s already worldwide interest.

With no Disney Plus UK launch date, or current plans for the rest of Europe – the Netherlands aside – many viewers won’t have the same choice of streaming services, and may be harder to attract later on if Netflix and Amazon Prime continue to get their claws in.

– Running out of content

As much as it’s exciting to see hundreds of classic Disney films and shows, hundreds will only get Disney so far. Netflix boasts around 8,000 total titles, while Amazon Prime has over 14,000 TV shows alone (via Business Insider).

Disney’s long-running Twitter thread of launch titles didn’t even get near 1,000, and it will take a while before Disney will have a comparatively sized catalogue. As much as we’re excited for the November 12 launch, we can’t shake off the feeling that the excitement could be hard to keep going with some speedy growth after the first few months (when people have likely watched the titles they already wanted to).

Apex Legends Season 3: latest update news, tips, patch notes and more

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 04:10 AM PST

EA surprised many with the sudden announcement of Apex Legends back in February 2019, a free-to-play battle royale shooter that sees the publisher going toe-to-toe with genre mammoths PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale.

Developed by Respawn Entertainment and set in the Titanfall universe, Apex Legends is a squad-based battle royale shooter where teams of three go up against 57 other players to try to gather loot and be the last person (or squad) standing.

However, unlike Fortnite and PUBG, Apex Legends sees players take on one of eight classes, each represented by a unique character (imagine Fortnite mixed with Overwatch and you’ll be on the right track.)

As of October 1, Apex Legends has entered its third season. Called Meltdown, this season is introducing plenty of changes, big and small. From new weapons, to a new character to a brand spanking new map there's plenty to enjoy in Season 3 of Apex Legends for old and new players alike.

Meltdown is seriously building on some of the much-needed and successful improvements that Respawn Entertainment made to Season 2 in a way that gives us great hope for the future of this game that's now very close to being one year old.

If you're new to Apex Legends and looking to see what you're missing or you've dropped off the map for a while and you'd like to catch up on the latest, we're here to keep you up to date on what's fresh in Apex Legends.

As we said in our full Apex Legends review:

"Truth be told, the Battle Royale movement has never quite grabbed me. I dabbled in PUBG and spent a dozen hours or so with Fortnite, yet nothing ever quite stuck the landing. Apex though, has got me hook, line and sinker. Featuring intuitive controls, an outstanding comms system and remarkable rogue’s gallery, Respawn has created what feels like the AAA outing for the genre."

Apex Legends update news

  • What's new? The long-awated Duos Mode is coming in November

A duos mode is finally coming to Apex Legends on November 5. This long-awaited game mode is mixing up the usual three-person squads by allowing players to team up with one other player and take on other pairs.

At the moment, it's not known how long the limited time mode will last but usually in Apex Legends they go for three week rotations.

As yet, no limited time modes have become permanent features in the game so despite the high demand, it doesn't seem likely that Duos will hang around longer than its allotted time. Then again, never say never—if it proves popular enough we may see it again one day.

Apex Legends Meltdown

Season 2 of Apex Legends has now wrapped up and as of October 1 Season 3: Meltdown is underway.

So what's new? Well, the most important thing is that brand new map you've probably heard about.

World's Edge

In Meltdown players are waving goodbye to the classic King's Canyon and saying hello to World's Edge. This new map is only the second ever introduced in the game but it's a dramatic departure from its predecessor, offering a massive, bright world that combines fire and ice.

There's plenty to explore in World's Edge and we're sure it's keeping secrets that will be revealed later in the Season. Not only that, its diverse terrain that will see you dodging geysers, contending with lava fields and riding atop a moving train among other things offers a great opportunity to experiment with different combat styles.

Battle Pass

Apex Legends isn't exactly known for having mind-blowing Battle Passes but Season 3 does offer an improvement on its predecessors in some ways.

Like the others, this Battle Pass is brand new for the Season and it brings with it 110 levels to climb by completing daily and weekly challenges, with more than 100 exclusive items including Legendary Skins, Apex Packs, Loading Screens and Gun Charms to earn.

New weapons and character

The new weapon for Season 3 is the Charge Rifle and it's making its debut alongside the new hacker and surveillance expert, Crypto. This new Legend can be purchased for 750 Apex coins and is great for those seeking some long-distance combat options as he uses his surveillance drone "to stay in the fight and out of the spotlight". He'll be a great addition to any team looking for some recon and of interest to any player looking for a more refreshing style of play.

Ranked League Series 2

Alongside Season 3, Ranked League Series 2 also launched on October 1.

Like Series 1, Series 2 uses a score-based system with the developers feeling pleased with how it went the first time around. Tiers and Divisions also remain the same along with the level 10 entry requirement for ranked play and the fact that playing with friends will see matchmaking up to the highest ranked player.

So what will players see that's a little different? Well, in Series 2 all ranked players will see their ranks be soft reset. That means all players will drop 1.5 Tiers. This is being done instead of a hard reset to 0, which would really stop any feeling of progress for those who were invested in the previous Ranked League.

After deactivating leaver penalties in Series 1, Series 2 has them enabled so players who abandon their teammates during a match are hit with a matchmaking penalty in regular and Ranked matches. Penalties mean players are stopped from entering new matches for escalating amounts of time based on how often they drop out of matches before they're finished. Penalties range from 5 minutes to an entire week.

While the Series 1 score-based system remains it has been improved in some ways. For more "granularity in the points spread" all the points in the system have been multiplied by 10. Match entry RP costs have also been updated. Bronze matches remain free but Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond and Apex Predator matches now cost 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 RP respectively.

Assists have also been added to Ranked play's kill count score. An assist in Apex Legends is defined as doing damage to a player within 5 seconds of them being knocked down by a teammate. If the player is revived the assist doesn't count.

Completely new to Ranked League Series 2 is the Apex Predator Ladder Position which now allows Apex Predator ranked players to see their worldwide standing as well as their RP. The ladders positions are split by platform so three players on PlayStation, Xbox and PC are all able to claim a number 1 ranking.

Cosmetic rewards for rankings have also been introduced. All players  receive badges indicating the highest level they've reached while players that reach Gold tier and higher receive a gun charm. Reach Diamond or higher and players receive a custom dive trail.

Recently there have been rumors that players could soon see cross-play and cross-progression introduced to Apex Legends. We're taking these rumors with a pinch of salt since Respawn hasn't made any comment on them. But if there is anything to be announced it's likely we won't hear until Season 3 is underway or perhaps even past.

Apex Legends tips and tricks

Apex Legends can be difficult to get to grips with. There are a lot of different characters each with their own abilities and skills, plus this battle royale arguably leans more heavily on strategy and teamwork than some of its competitors.

Get ahead of the pack with our selection of Apex Legends guides, designed to help you become a champion.

How to download Apex Legends

Apex Legends can be downloaded for free from the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, Origin Store or Apex Legends website. Simply search for the title, download the game and enjoy!

But do keep in mind that a good internet connect and subscription to either PS Plus, Xbox Live or Origin Access is required to play.

The good news is that Apex Legends is also coming to mobile in the future, following in the footsteps of Fortnite and PUBG.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends roadmap - what's next?

Respawn Entertainment has shared the season roadmap for Apex Legends. Apex Legends Battle Pass seasons run for approximately three months. Currently four seasons have officially been announced:

  • Season One: March 19, 2019 until June 18, 2019.
  • Season Two: July 2, 2019
  • Season Three: September 2019
  • Season Four: December 2019

Apex Legends

Is Apex Legends coming to mobile?

Yes. In EA’s quarterly earnings report, the publisher announced that it’s looking at bringing the Respawn Entertainment-developed game to mobile platforms and to both South Korea and China.

“We’re in advanced negotiations to China and mobile”, EA’s CFO Blake Jorgenson stated, before later mentioning South Korea as another expansion point.

We shouldn't expect to see Apex Legends on mobile for at least a year, though. According to EA Chief Executive, Andrew Wilson, the game won't launch until the fiscal year 2021.

Nintendo reportedly plans to bring more 3DS games to the Switch

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:33 AM PST

The release of the handheld-focused Nintendo Switch Lite this year pretty much heralded the final stages of the slow and steady decline of the Nintendo 3DS system. But just because a console is on the out, doesn’t mean its games have to go too.

Thanks to the success of the Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo is considering bringing some of the popular 3DS franchises to it in the future.

With its non-detachable controllers and slim, light design the Nintendo Switch Lite is firmly for those who aren’t interested in the original Switch’s big screen capabilities and prefer the handheld portable experience. In our review we praised its design for being "more comfortable for portable gaming than the Switch, while boasting the same performance."

A bright Lite future

According to the Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki, Nintendo chief Shuntaro Furukawa has said the company is looking to bring more 3DS games to the Switch in order to highlight the Lite’s “appeal” as a handheld.

Given the Switch Lite’s immediate popularity—2 million sales in just 11 days—it’s unsurprising that Nintendo wants to capitalise on the console’s success and its appeal as a 3DS replacement. Nintendo is consistently adamant that it will support the 3DS as long as players are interested in it but drawing players towards the Switch Lite is a natural progression.

Which 3DS games would be brought forward isn’t clear but one indication of what Nintendo’s intentions may be is the upcoming revival of the Brain Age franchise.

In December, the hugely popular DS series is making its way onto the Switch in Japan with a dedicated stylus, new exercises and some features that take advantage of the Switch system. Enhanced continuations of popular franchises are likely to have the strongest appeal, though no one is likely to say no to an improved HD remake of a 3DS favourite.

Appealing 3DS re-releases could certainly be a good way to keep Switch software sales strong between big, new releases like Pokémon Sword and Shield and Animal Crossing. We're sure fans have plenty of suggestions for what they'd like to see.

Google Pixel 4a: what we want to see

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 03:00 AM PST

Google surprised everyone in 2019 by releasing the Pixel 3a and 3a XL, affordable versions of the Pixel 3 and 3 XL that brought some of the hardware and software of the premium devices, but offered them at a more appealing price tag. We'd expect the same to be the case in 2020, with anticipated Pixel 4a and 4a XL presenting some of the features of the recent Pixel 4 and 4 XL in a more affordable body.

There aren't any leaks or rumors about the upcoming Pixel 4a devices just yet, so we've taken this opportunity to speculate as to what we could see in the device, and list a few features we'd love to see in the future handset.

The Pixel 4 and 4 XL were popular devices, but didn't land with quite the fanfare of the Pixel 3 devices, so the upcoming phones could be Google's opportunity to win back buyers who were put off by some of the intriguing design decisions. What do we mean by that? Read on to find out.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? An affordable variant of the Pixel 4 smartphone
  • When is it out? Likely May 2020
  • How much will it cost? Around $399 / £399 / AU$649

Google Pixel 4a release date and price

Google Pixel 3a XL

Since we're not even in 2020 yet, and the Pixel 4 devices are still fresh in our mind (and hands), it's still early days to try and guess a Pixel 4a release date. However we can take a rough estimate.

The Pixel 3a became available on May 8, a day after its announcement at Google IO 2019, and we can expect this pattern to repeat itself. We don't know when Google IO 2020 is yet, but it'll be roughly the same time of the year.

In terms of how much you'll pay, the Google Pixel 4a price could actually be lower than the Pixel 3a price, at least at launch. We say that because the Pixel 4 cost less than the Pixel 3 (when directly comparing release prices), and we could see that pattern repeat in 2020.

Of course these are both guesses, and when we hear some concrete leaks we'll update this article.

What we want to see in the Google Pixel 4a

The Google Pixel 4 was an innovative flagship feature, but when it comes to adapting this feature to a budget price tag, there are a few things we'd like it to consider.

1. Bring back the fingerprint scanner

The Google Pixel 4 has no rear-mounted fingerprint scanner like the Pixel 3, not does it have an in-screen one like many premium smartphones around. Instead, it relies on facial recognition unlocking for you to access your phone.

For some, this is a useful feature to help them get into their phone quickly and easily; others find this an unsecured and frustrating experience. For the Pixel 4a, we'd like Google to drop this feature, and instead have a physical or screen-mounted fingerprint sensor.

It's likely Google will make this change, as the tech involved in efficient face unlocking adds quite a bit of price to the phone, so if the company wants to slash the price of the new device, it'd make sense to remove face recognition first.

2. Improved battery life

Google Pixel 3a XL

A recurring problem with Google Pixel smartphones is that their battery lives always leave a lot to be desired, and plummet quicker than competing devices. Saying that, the Pixel 3a solved that problem with a bigger battery capacity and a weaker processor, which meant it drained battery less.

Since most normal people need smartphone batteries that'll last them a day, even in a pinch, the more affordable and accessible Pixel 4a needs a battery that'll last it this long, which means a bigger capacity than the 4 as well as tools in place to keep it going longer, like canny optimizations.

3. Drop the 90Hz screen

This is bound to be a pretty controversial suggestion, but if Google is looking for features to cut to keep the Pixel 4a price down, we'd argue the 90Hz screen is an unnecessary luxury that could be lost without making the device worse.

While some people really love 90Hz screens in phones like the Pixel 4, as it makes the viewing experience a little smoother, many more people struggle to notice the difference, especially people who aren't huge tech fans who don't know the feature is in place.

That means it's not a vital feature, and when there are aspects of the Pixel 4 that we would like to see in the 4a, we'd say the 90Hz screens are expendable.

4. Keep the telephoto camera

The Google Pixel 4 smartphones bumped the number of cameras on Google's devices from one to two, adding a telephoto snapper for optical zoom.

The Pixel 3a devices saw the cameras slightly downgraded from the Pixel 3 line, but that was purely in terms of software post-processing, and the hardware was exactly the same.

A telephoto lens in a camera is really useful, so you can take better pictures of a subject without dropping the quality dramatically, and we'd love to see it kept in the Pixel 4a. We'd be surprised if this wasn't the case, as the telephoto lens really ties the rear design together. And talking of Pixel 4a design...

5. Stick with the weird design

The Google Pixel 4 smartphones are weird looking devices, there's no getting around that. They're bare on the back except for a pretty sizeable camera bump (no fingerprint sensor, like in previous Pixels), with a glass back but a rubber frame around the edges. Yep, you read that right, rubber in a smartphone!

On the front, there's a notch the likes of which you barely see in modern smartphones, with a sizeable chin at the bottom of the screen. All in all, the Pixel 4 devices are far from 'conventional' Android phones, for better or worse.

Well, we kind of like the design. It's unique, and the Pixel 4 feels distinct in hand when you're using it. We'd like to see the Pixel 4a retain the 'weird' design, especially the rubber frame, as we found it great for protecting the phone.

This laptop has a unique, strange looking keyboard that won't appeal to anyone

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:58 AM PST

TBao may not be the most familiar brand name to many people, but this Chinese vendor is trying pretty hard to differentiate itself from the army of smaller identikit laptop vendors that operate in South East Asia.

One of its latest products is the TBOOK5 Pro laptop, and it looks to stand out from the crowd with one very unique selling point.

The keys on its keyboard have rounded edges that give it a rather peculiar look. The marketing department at TBao calls it "retro punk", claiming that it has a "realistic knocking and light rebound, so that it has a retro charm in both appearance and trial feel".

Steampunk appeal?

At $489.00 at the time of writing, the TBOOK5 Pro is quite expensive for what it offers in terms of components; there's an Intel Celeron 3867U paired with a dedicated Geforce 940MX GPU with 2GB video memory, a full HD display, a full metal body, a backlit keboard and a fingerprint reader.

This makes it as expensive as outrageously stunning Inspiron 14 5000 (5481) from Dell, which also has 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD with Windows 10 and a 14-inch display.

Its keyboard remains its main attraction and we can’t wait to see other rivals come up with similar designs although, truth be told, it is very unlikely that any of them will replicate the touch and feel of a true mechanical keyboard.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will not have ray tracing on PC, Nvidia confirms

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:57 AM PST

Red Dead Redemption 2 possibly having ray tracing was one of the wilder rumors concerning the PC version of the game to spring up very recently, just ahead of its launch, but Nvidia has come out to confirm that it will not have these visual bells and whistles after all.

This particular rumor kicked off when Nvidia posted some screenshots of Red Dead Redemption 2 in ‘glorious 4K’ on the PC, but with a GeForce RTX logo in the corner.

That led to speculation that this indicated that the game benefited from ray tracing – which RTX graphics cards are made to handle, with dedicated ray tracing cores – with perhaps fuel added to the fire by the fact that the screen grabs themselves showed off some pretty cool lighting effects.

However, Nvidia has since tweeted that the inclusion of the RTX logo simply referred to its RTX 20-series graphics cards – essentially advertising them – and that nothing further was meant to be read into this.

Ray ban

Obviously there was enough excitement – or indeed perhaps confusion – generated by the screenshots and surrounding rumors that Nvidia felt the need to come out and actually clarify this.

Of course, it was always pretty unbelievable that Rockstar and Nvidia would have kept ray tracing quiet as a last-minute surprise if indeed it was coming to Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. After all, they’ve done enough shouting about how the graphical quality of the PC version will be a big step up with better draw distances, more realistic textures and so forth.

And besides, it’s the ‘RTX On’ label which normally denotes ray tracing being present in a game, although it’s easy to see how the confusion arose – or at least how people were willing to speculate in a hopeful manner.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is out on PC come November 5, following its launch on consoles just over a year ago now. Not only will PC gamers get improved graphics, but there’s also the tantalizing possibility of some pretty smart mods, with one already well underway from the makers of FiveM (a popular mod for GTA V).

Meanwhile, in the world of PC games which definitely do have ray tracing, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is just out and we tested the performance of the game across four different Nvidia RTX cards – with some interesting findings.

Microsoft Edge has a new logo to help you forget about Internet Explorer

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 02:30 AM PST

A new browser deserves a new logo, and Microsoft has revealed a radically refreshed bit of artwork to go alongside the Chromium-based version of Microsoft Edge.

It's still an 'E', sort of, but the updated icon is a long way from the Internet Explorer-esque logo that the original Microsoft Edge is using. The message is clear: Microsoft is breaking with the past with this new version.

While the new browser is effectively still in beta, Microsoft has said it's close to being finished, and it should be replacing the existing version of Edge in the near future.

The new and improved Edge has been built from the ground up – using the same Chromium foundation as Google Chrome – to be more appealing to both end users and web developers.

Sign of the times

The new logo wasn't unveiled in a conventional way, however – it was hidden behind a series of puzzles and clues posted to the web by Microsoft employees.

At the end of the digital trail was an online surfing game that, when completed, revealed the stylish-looking icon. It makes a change from the usual blog post or press release, at least, and it would seem to hint that the new Edge is almost ready for a full launch.

As for the connotations that come with the new Edge logo, we'll leave you to draw your own conclusions – it looks a bit like a green-and-blue wave to us, which presumably links in with 'surfing' the web.

Microsoft has been busy refreshing a load of its iconography over the last few months, from the Office icons to the core Windows 10 apps, so it makes sense that Edge would be following suit.

Can a company move to cloud without losing visibility and control over their security posture?

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:58 AM PST

Can an organisation responsibly entrust their most sensitive data and workloads to a cloud service provider without losing visibility and control?

Must you risk trading security for convenience in a hybrid and multi-cloud environment?

These are the kind of questions that will crop up in mind when moving your assets to the flexibility and decentralised nature of a cloud environment.

As organisations move to the cloud, Diana Kelley, Microsoft’s Cyber Security Field CTO, told TechRadar Middle East, that they [organisations] don’t have the same kind of visibility they had on-premises but that does not mean they don’t have visibility.

Microsoft has two data centres in the UAE – one in Abu Dhabi and one in Dubai.

“You can tap all of your traffic on the network when you are in an on-premise environment but when you move to the cloud, you are on a shared environment,” she said.

With the right planning and cloud partner or partners, she said that even highly sensitive assets can be transitioned to the cloud in a secure and trusted manner without losing visibility and control.

“We give companies ways to get visibility into what is happening with their apps and data in the cloud in many different ways. One way is through Microsoft Graphs and Intelligent Security Graphs, these are trustful APIs that organisations can see their part in the cloud.

“Then, we have Azure Security Centre that does the inventory of the systems running in your tenancy and will tell you how many of those Linux or Windows, what is the patch level and what is the configuration levels are,” she said.

Moreover, she said that Azure Security Centre gives another layer of visibility such as compliance manager, which is integrated into the Azure and can report on the compliance status and “we also have Secure Score, where organisations can understand the current ranking of their configuration within Azure and compare that to similar organisations by size and protocol”.

But, she said that what is right for one organisation is different for other organisations.

“You can get visibility in the cloud but it is a different model from what was on on-prem. Within Office 365, you can know who touched the apps and which document in One Drive, who sent the document to whom and who was able to access the document, whether it is from inside or outside. There is a lot of rich reporting, audit and tools that are available now,” she said.

Reduce exposure to vulnerabilities

When asked whether a company can get 100% visibility, Kelley said that it all depends on each use case and “we work with each organisation to make sure they get the visibility they need. We are constantly improving our solutions based on customer needs”.

However, she said that companies can certainly do a significant amount to reduce their exposure to vulnerabilities and make their organisation fit by doing vulnerability test or run Secure Score to know where they stand and run multi-factor authentication to raise the bar for the attacker.

“If you can make it very expensive to attack your company, then, in most cases, the hacker will move on to the easier and softer targets. We work very hard with organisations to give them a view of what they can do to deploy securely. In Azure Blueprint, it gives guidelines for security in Azure and also has CIS Benchmarks that give companies a set of control that can be set within Azure to help them become fit,” she said.

The US company has deep data insights from the 6.5 trillion security signals that they analyse every day to track and analyse software vulnerabilities, exploits, malware, unwanted software, and attacker group methods and tactics.

“We have been able to catch every malicious activity in endpoint in milliseconds and block that in the cloud. There is so much data to reason over as we look at using machine learning (ML) and it has increased our pinpoint accuracy to reduce false positives and reduce the number of alerts and focus on true problems and potentially impactful activities that are going on within the organisation,” she said.

Machine learning is bearing fruit

Kelley said that ML is bearing fruit but one size doesn’t fit all and it is not perfect yet but without doubt, it is one of the linchpins.

“The threat model and the security architecture of the future need to be taken into account as we use ML and, at the same, hackers are also using ML. As the technology continues to develop and so the defences for the technology will also develop,” she said.

Machine learning and AI, she said will become a normal part of security strategies.

“We have 6.5tr data sitting right now and it helps to have ML and AI bots as additional advisors for hunting the bad guys but we strongly believe that ethics will come into play and also have responsible AI and seven components of ethical AI - fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusivity, transparency, and accountability,” she said.

“If we don’t think about the ethics of AI, it is quite possible that things are going to be biased. We look at the diversity of the teams that are involved with the AI. There are security scientists but as we are designing the model, we can get lawyers, sociologists and privacy experts involved and how it will impact the person who is using it. We take it very seriously,” she said.

Designing an AI to be trustworthy, she said it requires creating solutions that reflect ethical principles that are deeply rooted in important and timeless values.

Hackers to go after IoT devices

The CTO expects to see more use of AI by the attackers and going after the IoT space.

She said that the bad guys are obsessed with data and there is no better source than the interconnected IoT devices.

So, she said that each IoT device should be protected and deployed in a highly secure manner but does not mean that it has to behind a firewall.

The beautiful thing about the cloud, she said is that organisations can see the activity around the world. “Instead of an attacker figuring out a technique that works in one country and then deploy that technique in multiple countries, we can see that techniques and pieces of malware and malcode [malicious code] and be able to send that information around the world very quickly,” she said.

The cloud is a great bit of “security wisdom” about attack techniques that are occurring and they can go and hunt for the culprits before they cause a serious amount of damage, she added.

Can Google make a big difference, really, with acquisition of Fitbit for $2.1b?

Posted: 03 Nov 2019 01:57 AM PDT

What is Google trying to do with the purchase of Fitbit for $2.1b? Will it be similar to its previous acquisitions like Motorola, Nest or HTC? Google’s previous acquisitions have been a failure so far.

Google acquired Motorola for $12.5b in 2011 and later sold it to Lenovo for $2.91b in 2014. In that transaction, Google gained access to about 25,000 mobile patents and now licenses it to Lenovo.

In 2014, Google acquired Nest for $3.2b and they were not able to differentiate from the crowd.

In 2018, Google purchased HTC's smartphone division for $1.1b to strengthen its Pixel smartphones with HTC’s intellectual property but Pixel phones can't be considered mainstream with a less than 1% market share.

With the acquisitions of Motorola, HTC and Nest and a strong hardware push, Google has not yet been successful at selling consumer devices.

Will Fitbit acquisition make a difference?

By purchasing Fitbit, Google now has access to smartwatch patents and data to take on Apple in the wearables health care segment. Apple is currently the king in the wearables category and gained popularity with the acceptance of health care apps.

For Google to gain traction in the wearables category, it needs to have its own smartwatch as none of the other top phone makers are using Wear OS, except Fossil. Google paid $40m to acquire smartwatch tech from Fossil this year.

When WearOS launched, Huawei, Motorola, LG, Sony and Asus launched smartwatches but couldn't really gain much traction.

According to IDC, smartwatch is the second-fastest-growing category after ear-wear in the wearables category until 2023 forecast period. Watches are forecasted to grow from 91.8 million units in 2019 to 131.6 million in 2023 with a five-year annual rate of 9.4%.

Apple is expected to lead the way, capturing a 25.9% share of all watches in 2023. Beyond Apple will be a variety of brands running different operating systems, including Android, WearOS, Huawei’s Lite OS, Tizen and others.

Fitbit fits in well for Google in health care space

Now, you know why Google is so serious about the growing health care space and to improve its health-related search results. Fitbit fits in well for Google.

From Fitbit’s point of view, it is difficult to sustain in the market with a standalone product when the market is undergoing a cutthroat competition. Even, the future remains unclear for smaller brands as they are competing with brands with an ecosystem of devices.

There were many acquisitions and mergers among smaller players in the wearables category such as Fitbit buying Pebble, Fossil buying Misfit. Even Microsoft exited the wearables business after its Microsoft Band and Microsoft Band 2. It is not easy to stay afloat in the wearables category.

As big brands are sitting on with a lot of health-related data from smartwatches, how the future is going to be.

Google has said that it will never sell personal data to anyone and Fitbit’s health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads. Do you believe it?

Insurance companies, in future, will definitely avail this data from smartwatch brands to offer tailored solutions and prices depending on their lifestyle and fitness levels.

The first season of Netflix Original 13 Reasons Why was released back in 2017 and has been on Netflix ever since then. But the second season landed in May 2018, which looks at the events that unfolded right after the first ended.

The show is a US-based high school drama that revolves around a high school student called Clay Jensen and his friend Hannah Baker. Hannah died by suicide, and the first season was the 13 reasons why that happened.

As you'd expect, a lot of the topics and themes in 13 Reasons Why might be distressing for some viewers. So really bear that in mind if you're planning on watching it soon - and consider who you're planning on watching it with, too.

Netflix has had a rocky road with sci-fi adaptations - the Wachowski's Sense8 had grand ambitions but didn't quite hit the sweet spot for everyone. Altered Carbon is hoping to change that, with its unique blend of dystopian science fiction. Based on the book of the same name by Richard Morgan, the show has sparks of brilliance ( Joel Kinnaman is great) but is also occasionally ridiculous in its outset (James Purefoy hams it up throughout). It strives to be more than it actually is but we admire what it's trying to do. Oh, and it looks fantastic in 4K.

The latest offering from Netflix Originals is here. The Alienist is a murder mystery set in New York City in 1896. It follows the story of psychologist Laszlo Kreizler (played by Daniel Bruhl) who is enlisted by the police to catch a killer who is preying on local homeless boys.

The TV show is based on a novel by Caleb Carr and, interestingly, psychologists were sometimes called 'alienists' back then, which was likely due to the French word 'aliene' meaning insane. Others suggest it might be because people with serious mental health problems were considered 'alienated' from their true nature.  Seasons on Netflix: 1

Margaret Atwood is having something of a resurgence at the moment, what with the incredible The Handmaid’s Tale adaptation and now this, a superb take on her novel Alias Grace. Grace is another cutting social commentary that’s wrapped in a mystery, centred on servant Grace Marks who is sentenced to life in prison for the apparent murder of her housekeeper. The plot will keep you guessing, the design of the show is sumptuous and there’s even a surprise cameo from David Cronenberg.

Given that Archer is set at the International Secret Intelligence Service (unfortunately abbreviated as ISIS), recent terror atrocities have meant the animation has been getting headlines for the wrong reasons. But don't let this unlucky nomenclature put you off. Archer is a brilliant send-up of spy movies of yore, complete with some of the best voiceover talent - many of which have been pruned from the cast of Arrested Development. While the fifth season 'reboot' wasn't the success it should have been, Archer is still one of the best cartoon comedies around.

Seasons on Netflix: 8

Arrested Development is one of the best comedies ever made. So it made sense that Netflix would want to resurrect it for a fifth season. The fourth season was funny, but it wasn’t perfect - primarily because most of the cast were too busy to get into the same room. But the fifth season brings back some of that Bluth magic, which is full of in-jokes, jokes that run for entire seasons and more, well, jokes, this is essential TV.

Freddie Highmore was one of the sweetest child actors around in his younger years, playing cherubic children in the likes of Finding Neverland and the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Now he's a fully fledged adult he's taken a much darker turn as future Psycho psycho Norman Bates in the show Bate Motel. A prequel of sorts to the Psycho movies, Bates Motel is a fantastic spin on the horror tale, ramping up the relationship Bates has with his mother - a cold and calculating Vera Farmiga - and sprinkling breadcrumbs along the way that point to how he became who he became.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

Better Call Saul is better than Breaking Bad. That’s a sentence we never thought we would write, but it’s now three seasons and it is flawless TV. It doesn’t have the menace or fear that propelled Walter White in Breaking Bad, instead it takes its time to paint a picture of Saul Goodman, someone that was in Bad mainly for comic relief. In his own show, though, creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have created a well-rounded, means well character whose descent into criminality is a slow burn. Although some characters have started to appear from Breaking Bad, the show doesn’t beg for the appearance of Walter White or Jesse - it’s now it’s own thing and we can’t wait for Season 4.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

There's no better person to portray not-so-distant future dystopias than Charlie Brooker. He's been holding a warped mirror up to the ridiculous nature of the world's media for years, mixing cutting comments with comedy, but Black Mirror sees him entering darker territory. Each series is just three episodes long but they are all standalone treats, twisting reality in their own unique way while commenting on things we seem to hold dear today - namely technology and television.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

More addictive than the meth pushed by Walt and Jessie, Breaking Bad is brilliant binge-watching television. The initial plot is simple: a straight-laced teacher is told he has cancer and to make sure he leaves his family with the best possible life, he turns to drug making and dealing. There's method to his madness as he ends up being pretty good at it. Creator Vince Gilligan has created such a good group of characters, he is currently mining the same world again with Better Call Saul. But that has some way to go reach the highest highs that Breaking Bad offers.

Seasons on Netflix: 5

Castlevania is a new anime-lite animated series from comic book writer Warren Ellis that expertly transcribes the franchise's history for the small screen. It's bloody, brooding and a bit outlandish at times, but what else could you expect from a series about vampire hunters and an army of the undead?

While there's still plenty of room for improvement when season two rolls around, the first season of Castlevania is without a doubt the best adaptation the series has ever seen, and well worth the one hour and twenty minutes it takes to watch all four 20-minute episodes.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

Created by Charlie Grandy (“The Office,” “The Mindy Project”) and Mindy Kaling (“The Office,” “The Mindy Project”), Champions is a comedy that centers on Vince, a washed-up high school baseball star who reluctantly gave up his dreams to take over the family gym in Brooklyn.

Vince lives with his sweet, naive younger brother, Matthew and is on the verge of secretly selling the gym and moving to Florida when his high school fling, Priya (played by the hilarious Mindy Kaling), unexpectedly drops off their 15-year-old son, Michael on his doorstep. It's a hilarious portrayal of boy-meets-father that will certainly bring a smile to your face.

The words 'food porn' get thrown around a lot these days, and typically are preceded by a hashtag and proceeded by us viciously rolling our eyes. But Chef's Table is the real deal – 4K footage of some of the best chefs in the world making their signature dishes and doling out morsels of philosophy to keep your mind just as engaged as your stomach.

Parts of the show come off as a bit too heady for the source material and are prone to veering a bit off course (there's multiple scenes where a particular chef talks about polygamy for some odd reason) but overall most of the chefs come off as genuinely eccentric masters of their craft.

Seasons on Netflix: 5

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrinathe Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

When it comes to superhero movies, Marvel are bossing DC thanks to the rich tapestry it has weaved with its cinematic universe. Its TV shows, which now include Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, just keep getting better.

Daredevil is superb television, regardless if you are a superhero fan or not. Matt Murdoch's (Boardwalk Empire's Charlie Cox) rise from blind lawyer to vigilante is brutal and steeped in realism. The reason it works so well is that it doesn't shy away from being violent - each crack and crunch is a world away from Ben Affleck's terrible movie version. And special mention has to go to Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, his best role since the tortured Private Pyle.

A bit of a different kind of show for Netflix, but one that's more than welcome. Follow This follows some of the reporters who work at Buzzfeed as they hunt down interviewees and scoops for a range of topics, including weird internet crazes and ASMR videos, through to safe injection spaces for opioid users. Alison Brie already proved she had comedic chops in Community but GLOW cements her as a comedy genius who can turn on the seriousness when she needs to. In GLOW (gorgeous ladies of wrestling) she plays Ruth Wilder, a struggling actress in '80s LA who turns to women's wrestling to make a star of herself. The show is a look at the underground sensation of ladies wrestling, with all the wit and gender stereotype reversing you would expect from the maker of Orange Is The New Black. It's a great, highly original watch, with a superb cast that includes British singer Kate Nash.

Jessica Jones is back! The ass-kicking private detective of Hell's Kitchen, New York, is back on the streets, taking on the demented villains of the Marvel universe's underworld.

A more adult show than the likes of Daredevil and Luke Cage, Krysten Ritter's take on the titular hero is a gritty and violent one. Sex, booze and bust-ups, this one's not for kids, but great adult-orientated superhero action nonetheless.

Seaons on Netflix: 1

This awkward rom-com has been penned by Judd Apatow and it's yet again another hit for Netflix Originals. It's a similar bedfellow to Master of None, but it improves on the themes of dating, love and city life with characters that are more rounded and a touch more believable as they fail, give up and start over again in rapid succession. Community's Gillian Jacobs is great as the prim Mickey, while Paul Rust is effortless as slacker Gus. The show stealer, though, is Apatow's uber talented daughter Iris who plays a frankly horrible child star.

The 'will they, won't they?' shenanigans continue in the second season - those expecting a plot-heavy season will be disappointed, though, as Love meanders through its storylines - which is no bad thing (and more realistic) if you ask us.

Marvel has created a rich cinematic universe and although some of its TV shows (cough, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Agent Carter, cough) have struggled to stay on their feet, others like Jessica Jones and Daredevil have flourished.

Luke Cage is more in the same vein as Jessica Jones and Daredevil, with less light-hearted superhero fun and more hard-hitting themes, violence and grit. Viewers who lamented the fact that they didn't get to see more of him in Jessica Jones will enjoy the opportunity to find out more about what makes his character tick here. And don't worry if you haven't watched Jessica Jones, it's not a requirement to understand or appreciate anything about Luke Cage.

Mad Men is more addictive than the cigarettes Don Draper is trying to market us. If you've never watched it, essentially Mad Men is a show about everything we now consider taboo in glaringly harsh light. Set in 1960s America, inter-office intercourse is par for the course, along with ashtrays overflowing with cigarettes, sexism at the highest levels and a complete disregard for morals so long as it serves the characters on their climb to the top of the corporate ladder. Don Draper (Jon Hamm) and his assistant Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss) shock and entertain us by showing the lifestyles of the advertising executives who got the public to buy cigarettes long after they knew the health risks.

True crime stories are so hot right now, evidenced by the immense popularity of the podcast Serial and HBO's The Jinx. Netflix's original series Making a Murderer however, is probably the hottest of them all, documenting and recounting the trials of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, two working-class Americans accused of the murder of 23-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach. Over its 10 episodes, the show exposes the failings of the Wisconsin justice system in blood-boiling detail. Having spent 18 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, Steven Avery is exonerated based on new DNA evidence. However, shortly after his release, he becomes the prime suspect in Halbach's murder, and Avery is put through the ringer once again by law enforcement figures that seem to have it out for him. What follows is an anger-inducing sequence of events that involve forced confessions, unconvincing (and possibly planted) evidence, dodgy lawyers and a complete presumption of guilt from almost everyone involved. Compelling, infuriating and tragic, we guarantee you won't be able to stop watching Making a Murderer once you've started.

Seasons on Netflix: 2

A bizarre new sci-fi series based on a Norwegian TV show of the same name. It's about Annie and Owen, played by Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, two troubled strangers who are brought together during some strange pharmaceutical trials. Dr. James K. Mantleray claims that a new series of pills he's created can solve all kinds of mental illness and heartbreak, but there's something much deeper and more sinister going on too.

Acclaimed actor and director Andy Serkis reinvents Rudyard Kipling’s beloved masterpiece, in which a boy who would become a legend, wants nothing more than to find a home. Torn between two worlds, that of the jungle and that of humankind, Mowgli must navigate the inherent dangers in each on a journey to discover who he really is. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Freida Pinto, Matthew Rhys and Naomie Harris lead an all-star cast along with newcomer Rohan Chand ("Mowgli") in this visually spectacular and emotionally moving adventure. It will also be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali.

Narcos is that wonderful thing: a TV show that doesn't scrimp on controversy. Based on the exploits of Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar, the show examines the criminal's rise to the top of one of the biggest drug rings the world has seen, while constantly trying to avoid the clutches of the DEA.

Uncompromising, uncomfortable but completely unforgettable, Narcos is exactly the sort of thing that Netflix should be commissioning. It's also the sort of thing that HBO would have snapped up just a few years ago - which is very telling as to where television is today.

The third season of Narcos is out now!

This month he sits down with Malala Yousafzai, and learns more about her  incredible journey.

Orange Is The New Black is back for its sixth season and is a show that consistently one of the best to watch, with its superb tale of life in a women's prison. It's so popular that its makers have announced that the show will be running until at least season seven.

That being said, the show is dark. Tensions and issues with the US prison system brought to the forefront and while the comedy from the first few seasons is still there, it's slathered with a fair bit of drama.

Netflix's latest TV drama has been tipped as the next Breaking Bad, but it doesn't quite deserve that accolade. One of the main reason is that Jason Bateman's Marty Byrde has already broke bad, helping a Mexican cartel to fudge their figures. This means the descent that was so brilliant in Walter White isn't really seen here. But that doesn't mean that show isn't worth a stream - it's a tense, occasionally terrifying watch that mashes stereotypes and cultures as the Byrde family leave their home in Chicago for the Ozarks in Missouri.

Also, let's be honest, whatever Bateman is in is always worth a watch, even when he isn't winking at the camera Arrested Development style. Here's the crazy part. He's not even the best part of the show. The real scene stealer is the ever-brilliant Laura Linney. She acts, directs and produces in this series, proving she's the real star of the show.

A policeman, a criminal overlord, a Bollywood film star, politicians, cultists, spies, and terrorists—the lives of the privileged, the famous, the wretched, and the bloodthirsty interweave with cataclysmic consequences amid the chaos of modern-day Mumbai. When it comes to TV and movies, the '80s is the nostalgia decade of the moment. Whether it's Jeff Nichols' Midnight Special that plays like a Steven Spielberg film, if Spielberg still made films like he did in the Eighties, or The Goldbergs and Red Oaks mining the decade for laughs, filmmakers can't get enough of the shell suits and Sony Walkmans.

Stranger Things is another brilliant homage to this era. Leaning heavily on Spielberg, John Carpenter and Stephen King the story revolves around a small town, a group of friends, a missing person and a dodgy science lab. Writing anything else would give away the myriad twists in a show that is full of brilliant creepy fun.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

One of the most positive shows you will ever watch, Queer Eye reboot's the original show but adds one key ingredient: it's not just the person's clothes that get a makeover but their well-being too. Over the course of the first season - which is a far-too short eight episodes - there is nary a criticism in site, rather than an enforcement of positivity which is welcomed like a warm hug. Watch it, embrace the love and embrace it some more.

If you're in the mood for a bleak Skandi-drama are you in luck. Netflix's latest offering in its seemingly relentless outpouring of great original content is the post-apocalyptic The Rain.

The Rain follows a group of survivors six years after a brutal virus wipes out the majority of Skandinavia's population. The show is a big ensemble endeavour with  a world that we're certain many people are going to get totally obsessed with.

If you're in the mood for getting totally engrossed in a fascinating world (and you don't mind subtitles) do yourself a favour and set sone time aside for The Rain.

Santa Clarita Diet is sort of like if the show Dexter met Modern Family. It stars Drew Barrymore as the stereotypical TV mom, with one simple, but quite interesting difference: she likes eating people.

Season 2 returns on March 23rd, and leaves many questions yet to be anwered. What turned Sheila undead? Has Joel boarded the crazy train? Are Eric and Abby just friends? The questions -- like the bodies -- are stacking up.

This brand-new show on Netflix is a great send up of the family sitcom, taking all the tropes that make Modern Family and the like so successful, then turning them on their head, and then eating their head. And be warned: when things are eaten it's all very grizzly – so much so that it could give The Walking Dead a run for its money. That said, it's probably best to put the kids to bed first.

Seasons on Netflix: 2

Before we continue on with recommendation, Shameless comes with a warning: this show, a dramedy about a poor family in Chicago, really is shameless. Frank, played by William H. Macy will scheme his way to his next drink ... even if that means taking his own kids' lunch money. If you have ethical problems watching less-than-admirable people doing whatever it takes to make ends meet, Shameless isn't for you.

All that said, those that don't mind a bit more ... unscrupulous cast of characters will seriously enjoy Shameless's grittier, sex- and money-driven take on the Modern Family comedy.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

It shouldn't work but it really really does. This modern retelling of the Sherlock Holmes stories is as good as it gets. Benedict Cumberbatch is everything you want in a Holmes - someone that wallows in wit, weirdness and warmth. While Martin Freeman plays Dr Watson as he plays all his characters - he's the everyman that has to learn how to deal with his extraordinary colleague. Episodes are scarce but each one is feature length, which gives them time to breath. Let's just hope these two superstars can find time in their busy schedules to keep doing the show.

Seasons on Netflix: 3

The Staircase is a story that's been 17 years in the making and Netflix has taken it upon itself to provide a closing chapter to the sad and strange case of novelist Michael Peterson. Originally an 8-episode series in 2004, it follows the story of Peterson after he was charged with murder in the death of his wife, Kathleen. He was sentenced to murder but then released amidst a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Specially for Netflix, director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade catches up on everything that's happened to Peterson 2 and a half years after his release. Beware, this could be your new true crime obsession.

After a century of silence, war erupts between the Federation and Klingon Empire, with a disgraced Starfleet officer at the center of the conflict.

If you haven’t begun watching Discovery yet, take it from the son of Spock that it is one heck of a series. And did we mention that it streams with Klingon subtitles?

Seasons on Netflix: 2

Now celebrating its 50th year anniversary, Star Trek is a movie and TV phenomenon that has no signs of slowing down. The original series, The Next Generation, Voyager and Deep Space Nine have all landed on Netflix but, if we're being honest, it's really just the first two series that are the best.

Watching it now, the original Star Trek maybe full of creaky sets and suspect acting but the show was bold, colourful and slathered in '60s sci-fi innovation. The first series is superb, with perhaps the greatest-ever TV double act: William Shatner's Kirk and Leonard Nimoy's Spock. Kirk is all bluster and pomp, Spock is cool, calm and authoritative.

Unlike the original series, the Next Generation took a few seasons to get things right but it still fantastic viewing. Patrick Stewart is effortless as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the rest of the crew are - including Data, William T Riker and Geordi La Forge - up there in stature with the original crew.

Seasons on Netflix: 3 (Original Series); 7 (The Next Generation)

Fresh from giving horror anthologies a new spin with American Horror Story, creator Ryan Murphy has taken this idea and expanded it into the world of crime. The first series of American Crime Story focuses on the very public case of OJ Simpson and the death of his wife Nicole. It's superb TV, dramatising what was one of the most engrossing true stories to come out of the '90s. Cuba Gooding Jr is great as OJ but it's the supporting cast that steals the show. Sarah Paulson, David Schwimmer, John Travolta and Courtney B Vance ham it up to the max and it makes for some of the most entertaining television in years.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

The OA rounds off what has been an exceptional year for television on Netflix. Co-created by and starring the ever-brilliant Brit Marling, the show consists of eight episodes that rival Stranger Things for, well, strangeness. Marling is a blind woman who comes back after disappearing for many years. Her sight is restored and she has a tale to tell. Although there are eight episodes they vary wildly in length - from 70 minutes to 30 minutes. The whole thing has been made to make you feel uneasy and it does a great job of that.

Seasons on Netflix: 1

Someone escaping from a Domesday cult shouldn't be a recipe for comedy but Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt manages to squeeze the funny out of this premise. Created by Tina Fey and starring Ellie Kemper as the title character, the show sparkles with wit and is the right side of kooky - unlike some other shows *cough* New Girl *cough* we won't mention.

In Season 4 part 2, Kimmy faces new challenges as the head of HR for tech startup Giztoob. Meanwhile, Jacqueline signs Titus to her fledgling talent agency, White Tale. It's a guaranteed recipe for laughter so make sure you tune in.

Seasons on Netflix: 4

If you're a child of the late '80s or early '90s, you might remember Voltron as being the source of morality for animated TV alongside the likes of GI Joe and Transformers. Voltron Legendary Defender, a new series produced by the masters of animation at Dreamworks, is very much a continuation of that trend, adapted for modern audiences and with way better voice acting.

While the show is obviously geared towards a younger audience, it has moments that older mecha fans can enjoy, too. Plus, let's be honest, are you really prepared to watch Finding Nemo for the hundreth time? No? Introduce your kids to Voltron and you won't have to worry about it.

Best Android phones in the Middle East for 2019: which should you buy?

Posted: 02 Nov 2019 10:24 PM PDT

If you're looking out for the best Android phone you can buy, this is the place to be, as we've put all the biggest and best Google-powered handsets through their paces to come up with this rundown of all the best Android smartphones.

If you're an Android fan, you'll certainly appreciate the key way in which Android is hugely different from its Apple-branded smartphone competition – the sheer number of devices out there running Google's mobile operating system (OS).

The big names are all here. The many variations in screen size, processor power, software features and design makes finding the best Android phone for you extremely tough.

If you're keen to part your money on a new phone, though, it may be worth holding on to your cash for just a tiny while longer. With 2019 over soon, this could end up being our list of the best Android phones of the year, unless there are new surprises in store.

So which of these Android phones give the new iPhone a run for its money, or even top it? Will the new Android phones of 2020, like the Samsung Galaxy S11, Huawei P40 and more, work their way into the list? Only time will tell.

To help find the most fitting Android phone for you, we've rounded up the best Android handsets out there today, rating the phones on hardware performance, OS upgrade potential and, of course, how shiny and nice they are to have and boast about to work colleagues.

So here they are - the best Android phones money can buy today.

Best Android Phone

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus is the best that Samsung currently has to offer and is on top our list of the best Android phones, even with its huge price tag.

There's a lot to love in Samsung's Note phablet, from its beautiful 6.8-inch screen to the powerful selfie camera and the S Pen stylus which transforms your smartphone experience.

Sure, the cameras aren't as good as the Huawei P30 Pro, and the body leaves a bit to be desired with its huge frame and slippery design, but this is still a great smartphone if you can stomach the price.

Read more: Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus review

If the Galaxy Note 10 is too expensive for you, the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the S10 Plus are the next best Android phones you can buy right now, packing the best of what Samsung has to offer.

The Plus, in particular, is a big phone that's designed for big hands - and it takes the very best of what's on the smartphone market and puts it together in a compelling package that we've loved testing.

The Super AMOLED display has been measured as the very best around, with super colours, plus there's a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display.

Battery life is an improvement over the S9 Plus, thanks to the larger battery inside, and you also get Samsung's new Wireless PowerShare, allowing you to wirelessly charge other devices on the rear of the handset.

The trio of cameras on the rear of the Galaxy S10 Plus are among the best on the market, offering more features, shooting modes and overall clarity.

The Huawei P30 Pro could be the best Android phone we've used when it comes to photography. Its 5x and 10x zoom capabilities are staggeringly good. It also performs fantastically well in low light.

For those who really want to get up close to their subject, the P30 Pro also offers a 50x digital zoom, and although quality is reduced it's still impressive.

You also get plenty of power under the hood, an in-display fingerprint scanner, premium design and wireless charging with the ability to wireless charge other devices from the back of the P30 Pro.

It's a top, top Android phone and only narrowly misses out on top spot due to the Galaxy S10 Plus' overall slicker and more rounded smartphone experience.

Best Android Phone

Many of the top Android phones on this list are plus-sized versions, or premium handsets, but the OnePlus 7T is neither; it's just a great Android phone that's made its way onto this list because of its great features and a fantastic price.

There are three powerful rear cameras, a beautiful AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate (which is almost unheard of at its price point) and you get an all-around impressive user experience when you're using it.

It's not going to blow you away when you put it head-to-head against any of the other smartphones on this list, except in one regard: price. The OnePlus 7T is supremely affordable, and so it's worth picking up if you want a phone on this list yet can't afford the huge monsters that precede it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10

While the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is beaten in many ways by the Note 10 Plus, earlier on this list, the Note 10 Plus does have a way higher price too.

The 'basic' Galaxy Note 10 loses a rear camera from its bigger sibling, and has a lower res display less RAM so it's not exactly as powerful in a few ways. Neither of those puts a significant dent to the Note experience but the lower battery capacity doesn't make the Note last all day.

At its core though, the Galaxy Note 10 is the same device as the one sitting at our third slot on this list, with an S Pen stylus, good-looking design, and all of Samsung's software, so if the price of the Note 10 Plus puts you off, this is a great alternative.

What's this? Another Huawei phone in the top ten? Your eyes do not deceive you, the Huawei P30 really is one of the best Android phone rundown.

It has a smaller screen than the P30 Pro, and makes do with just the three rear cameras (rather than four) and a maximum zoom of 30x, but it's still a great Android phone.

There's heaps of power, a handy headphone jack (something the Pro can't boast) and a more manageable form factor for one-handed use. And of course, it's a little cheaper too.

Like the look of the new S10 and S10 Plus, but not a fan of their lofty price tags? Well fear not, as Samsung has catered for you with the Galaxy S10e, which is our favorite one-handed Android phone.

The Galaxy S10e has many of the flagship features of its pricier siblings, while offering a more palm-friendly size and a few compromises to help keep the cost down.

It’s hard not to recommend the S10e to anyone who prefers a smaller phone. This smartphone is for folks who want to text and browse apps one-handed without compromising performance.

Best Android Phone

This is the first time a smartphone from Oppo has made the cut for our best Android phones list – but the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom deserves its place, with a phone that's as powerful as it is novel.

With three powerful cameras that facilitate up to 10x hybrid zoom and 60x digital zoom, as well as a range of fantastic modes to enhance your photography, the Reno 10x Zoom is one of the best non-Huawei phones for photography. It also has a great design, and it stands out from other Android devices.

The pop-up selfie camera is one of the most intriguing features though, as it's a novel solution to the front-facing-camera problem that pops up in a 'shark-fin' form. It's a unique look that means the Reno 10x Zoom stands out from the crowd.

The handset isn't higher on this list because there are a few issues with it, like the heavy weight, questionable UI and because the name is a little misleading (as it suggests there's 10x optical zoom, not hybrid). Still the device should be one of your first inquiries if you're looking for a great camera phone without breaking the bank.

Read more: Oppo Reno 10x Zoom review

OnePlus is a Chinese manufacturer that's been making better and better phones, and this is its second handset that's got into our top Android phones list, after the OnePlus 7 Pro. The 7T Pro is a small step up over that handset, but a small step up over a great handset is still a good thing.

The OnePlus 7T Pro has an impressive rear camera array and a front snapper housed in a pop-up section. It also has a beautiful 90Hz display, that makes gaming and scrolling through social media that much more enjoyable.

Sure, OnePlus have yet to introduce useful technologies into its phones like wireless charging, and the camera isn't as good as some of the others higher on this list, but it's still one of the best Android phones you can buy without breaking the bank.

Best Android phones 2018

After years of threatening the top players in the smartphone game without really worrying them, 2018 has seen a significant uptick from the Chinese firm and the beautiful P20 Pro.

The triple camera setup on the rear of the P20 Pro provides great flexibility - and an excellent low-light mode - while the battery life comfortably gets through a day.

Then there's the eye-catching, two-tone finish on the rear which really sets the P20 Pro apart from the competition.

AMD's Navi 22 and Navi 23 GPUs recently spotted in Linux driver

Posted: 02 Nov 2019 05:11 PM PDT

It seems like only yesterday when AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su promised that high-end 7nm Navi-powered graphics cards are on the way. Now, signs of such premium graphics cards are starting to pop up.

As reported by Tom’s Hardware, 3DCenter forum member Berniyh recently spotted Navi 22 and Navi 23 graphics cards (GPUs) show up for the first time, and in a Linux driver. So naturally, people are speculating that they may be the premium GPUs that Dr. Lisa Su was talking about back in August.

We don’t know much about these high-end graphics cards just yet, and we can’t say for sure if these are what she referring to specifically. After all, she also said that “we have a rich 7nm portfolio beyond the products that we have currently announced in the upcoming quarters.” And, Twitter user KOMACHI_ENSAKA did leak a Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) registration document, published in June, that proves this.

However, if they are, AMD might just be poising them to rival Nvidia’s premium cards like the GeForce RTX 2080 Super or RTX 2080 Ti, which are currently dominating the high-end gaming GPU market. As you know, AMD is currently focusing on the budget to mid-range sphere in which the AMD Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT cards are king. While both deliver mind-blowing performance, they still can’t quite compare to Nvidia’s most powerful RTX cards.

Radeon RX 5800 and 5900 series

The current word on the street is that both Navi 22 and 23, as well as Navi 21, might possibly use the Radeon DNA and be based on an even better 7nm+ process node.

In addition, people are speculating that AMD could put them inside the RX 5800 and RX 5900 series, which Navi 21 showing up inside the Radeon RX 5800 series and Navi 22 inside the Radeon RX 5900 cards.

There’s no word yet, however, on when these cards will hit the streets. If we were to go by AMD’s recent roadmap, which shows that the manufacturer is in the design phase of its RDNA 2.0 architecture, we won’t likely see these cards until the later half of 2020 at the earliest.
