Apple : Logitech C922 Pro Stream webcam: is it worth the money?

Apple : Logitech C922 Pro Stream webcam: is it worth the money?

Logitech C922 Pro Stream webcam: is it worth the money?

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:32 PM PST

The Logitech C922 is a winner in our book. Capable of 1080p recording at 30 frames per second and 720p recording at 60fps, it’s simply one of the best webcams out there for most mainstream users and businesses.

In fact, in this day and age when laptops are more prevalent and webcams aren’t as much of a necessity for many users anymore, the Logitech C922 manages to shine with its capabilities and its extra features like the dual-microphones for stereo audio, which you won't find on every webcam.

The Logitech C922 also boasts the Logitech stand, which is versatile as it can easily be mounted onto most monitors or simply sit at your desk. Round those out with a solid low-light correction feature, the ability to remove and replace video backgrounds, and a 3-month license for XSplit Premium, and you’ve got a fine webcam that’s worth every penny.

If you’re seeking something with 4K and high frame rate capabilities, you might want to consider other options. However, if you’re looking to get into streaming, video chatting with friends and family, or doing more video conferencing for work, the Logitech C922 is an option that stands out from the dizzying array of webcams in 2019.

Keep an eye out for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals as well. You might save a bit of money on this webcam.

What you pay and what you get

Logitech advertises the C922 Pro Stream webcam at $99, but we've been able to find it for as low as $50 during sales. Black Friday always sees deep discounts at retail.

If the Logitech C922 Pro Stream checks all the boxes of what you need from a webcam, then by all means, go for it. It's a strong contender that can do a good job in a wide variety of applications, whether that's Skype calls with family, business video conferences, or game streaming.

But, if you find yourself wanting more and have some budget room or you don't need all of the features and want to save some money, there are other options that may be more worthwhile.

It's good, but there are other options

If you're not trying to go for any fancy game streaming with high frame rate video or background replacements, you can get the more affordable Logitech C925-e, which is otherwise fairly similar to the C922 Pro Stream. One handy feature that comes with this webcam that the C922 lacks is a sliding privacy shade, so you can keep the webcam plugged in while knowing that any digital intruders won't be seeing anything.

Microsoft's LifeCam Studio is a simpler but more affordable webcam that drops the exciting features for a straightforward offering. It just uses a single mic, and it doesn't support 60fps recording, but it will give you Full HD resolution at a lower price. If that's all you're after, this will do.

Of course, there are some cameras that are a lot more exciting as well. They'll cost a bit more and have higher system requirements to get the full performance, though.

Creative's Senz3D is a little more expensive than the C922 Pro Stream, thanks to a price drop, but it's every bit as good a webcam. It supports 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps, plus it can handle background removal, and it uses dual mics for stereo audio. However, the Senz3D's advanced depth sensors also support facial recognition for Windows Hello, as well as hand and joint tracking for some advanced 3D applications, opening the door for some exciting avatar possibilities.

For a simply better video experience, Logitech's Brio webcam takes the C922 Pro Stream's specs and dials them up. It can handle 4K HDR video with a wide 90-degree field of view, or you're able to bump down to 1080p at 60fps. Switching resolutions also gives you different field of view options and the ability to digitally zoom and pan. The catch: this webcam is more expensive than the C922.

Given the reduced price of the Creative Senz3D, we're inclined to go for that over the C922 Pro Stream even though the former is still a little more pricey. But, if you know you'll never use Windows Hello or other depth-sensing features and still want 1080p/30 and 720p/60, then the C922 is still a fine choice.

This cheap OLED TV deal brings the 65-inch LG C9 down to an amazing $1,699

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:30 PM PST

We don't know about you, but we constantly find ourselves in big box electronics stores absolutely gawking that the giant OLED TVs on the shelves, only to wish we could win the lottery so we could actually buy one.

However, right now at Newegg, we've seen an excellent early Black Friday deal for the 65-inch LG OLED C9.

Newegg has this excellent LG OLED TV for just $1,699 ahead of Black Friday, knocking an unbelievable $1,097 off the list price. That's not quite half off, but it's within the realm of half off. Either way, even if it isn't actually half off, it's still one hell of a good deal.

It should go without saying, but the 65-inch LG OLED C9 is a 4K OLED TV packed with HDR10 and Dolby Vision HDR support. That means that no matter which HDR content you're trying to consume, you'll be able to see it in all its glory on this TV.

Plus, we mean, the stand looks absolutely fantastic, so even if you're not brave enough to try mounting it on your wall, it can still look wonderful in your living room.

Plus, because it's an OLED display, you're going to see amazing color support, along with pristine contrast performance. It's basically going to be like going to the movies in your own living room. In fact, Black Friday isn't even here yet, but this might just be the best Black Friday TV deal of the year.

And if that's not enough for you, our UK-based Editor in Chief has been desperate to get a great deal on this TV - and he's currently cursing the Atlantic as the prices are nowhere near the prices they have in Britain.

This Android security bug could let anyone hack your camera

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:46 PM PST

Checkmarx's security research team has discovered several vulnerabilities affecting Google and Samsung smartphones which could allow an attacker to take control of a device's camera app to remotely take photos, record video and even spy on user's conversations and location.

The team initially began researching the Google Camera app on a Pixel 2XL and Pixel 3 when they discovered multiple vulnerabilities stemming from permission bypass issues. Checkmarx dug further and found that these same vulnerabilities also impact Samsung's camera app and other Android smartphone vendors as well.

Director of security research at Checkmarx, Erez Yalon and senior security researcher at the company, Pedro Umbelino explained how they were able to use a rogue app to gain control of the Google Camera app in a blog post, saying:

“After a detailed analysis of the Google Camera app, our team found that by manipulating specific actions and intents, an attacker can control the app to take photos and/or record videos through a rogue application that has no permissions to do so. Additionally, we found that certain attack scenarios enable malicious actors to circumvent various storage permission policies, giving them access to stored videos and photos, as well as GPS metadata embedded in photos, to locate the user by taking a photo or video and parsing the proper EXIF data. This same technique also applied to Samsung’s Camera app.”

Camera app vulnerabilities

In order to exploit the vulnerabilities its team found in the Google Camera app, Checkmarx developed a malicious application as a proof of concept exploit. The weather app it created did not require any special permissions besides basic storage access which is a commonplace permission requested by many other apps on the Google Play Store.

However, in addition to its weather app, Checkmarx also set up a command and control server which the app connects to for the purpose of carrying out an attacker's bidding. Once the app is installed and has been opened on a user's device, it creates a persistent connection to the command and control server and waits for instructions.

Even if a user were to close the app, it would still be connected to the server and an attacker could command it to take a photo, record video, record audio from voice calls, capture GPS tags from photos and access the data stored on the device. All of the photos and videos taken by the app would then be uploaded to the server.

The proof of concept exploit created by Checkmarx would even allow an attacker to record video and take photos if the smartphone was locked.

Both Google and Samsung have issued fixes for the vulnerabilities and to prevent falling victim to a similar attack, users should update their devices to the latest version of Android, check to make sure that the latest available security patches have been applied and update their camera app as well.

Behind the tech that saved YouTube from a scalability nightmare

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:00 PM PST

Back in 2010, YouTube was in a fix. The platform was growing fast and its infrastructure couldn’t match its pace. Pumping in more CPU and memory wasn’t helping; it was still falling apart at the seams.

That’s when two YouTube engineers, Sugu Sougoumarane and Mike Soloman decided to take a step back and analyse the problem from a different perspective: “When we actually sat down and wrote a huge spreadsheet of all problems and solutions, and when we looked at all that, it was obvious that we needed to build something that sits between the application and the MySQL layer, and moderate all these queries,” says Sugu in a sit-down with TechRadar Pro on the sidelines of the Percona Live Conference Europe 2019 in Amsterdam.

The solution to the problem came in the form of Vitess, which essentially makes it easy to scale and manage large clusters of MySQL databases. Sugu tells us that the project has grown quite a bit since its inception at YouTube. Back in the day Vitess was mostly just addressing scalability problems: “But over time, as soon as this proxy came in the middle, people started asking for more and more features. And we kind of organically grew into where we are today.”

Transparent routing

Sugu says that its users prefer Vitess over MySQL clustering because of the flexibility it offers: “MySQL clustering has challenges with scale out. So when you want to scale out, you want pieces to be more loosely coupled. But if you use [MySQL] clustering then you don't get that flexibility to move things around more easily. So I think that's the reason why Vitess is preferred by users.”

A key requirement to scaling a database is to manage how a database is partitioned or sharded in DBA speak. One of the reasons for Vitess’ popularity is its effective sharding scheme. VTGate, one of the two main proxies in Vitess, that started as a connection consolidator, is now becoming an important piece of the solution: “When we first built Vitess, we required the application to be shard aware. So the application had to say “I want to send this query, I want to send it to this shard.” Which meant that if you decided to use Vitess, you had to rewrite your app to basically make shard aware calls and Vitess manages the cluster for you.”

That changed in 2013 when VTGate took on the ability to route standard queries to the correct shard: “This meant that the application no longer needs to be shard aware…. any database driver could now use Vitess.” Sugu tells us that the Walmart-owned Indian e-commerce vendor Flipkart was the first one to take note of that feature and built a JDBC driver for Vitess, which then allowed them to easily port their application to Vitess. This one feature that Sugu claims was relatively easy to implement, changed the outlook for the project.

IaaS

Cloud-native solution

Vitess bills itself as a “cloud-native” solution. Sceptical, we quiz Sugu whether there’s more to it than just being buzzword compliant. He says the credit to Vitess’ cloud-ready nature can be traced back to Google’s cluster manager called Borg

Vitess was originally built to run on YouTube’s data centers until 2013 when Google decided to move them in-house within Google:

“Google's Borg is a beast because it's an environment that’s sort of hostile to storage systems. We had to actually make Vitess work in that environment where Borg will, at will, come and take down your pod and wipe your data and you had to survive in that environment.”

This meant the developers had to build resiliency features within Vitess to ensure the pods resurrect themselves after being taken down by Borg:

“And essentially, those are the same rules that Kubernetes has. In Kubernetes, if a pod goes down, your data is lost. So we were basically ready for Kubernetes, before Kubernetes was born.”

Furthermore, they also had to make subtle changes to the Vitess code since the lifecycle of deployments in the cloud is very different from their lifecycle on bare metal: “In bare metal you could have a master for six months. In Google a week would be a miracle because Google continuously rescheduled pods and it will take down your pod eventually.”

There was another aspect of this rescheduling that helped make Vitess ready for the ever changing cloud environments: “When it (Google’s scheduler) rescheduled sometimes it will put something else on the same address. For example, it could reschedule one shard and schedule in another shard. You won't even know because the schema is correct, you send a query and it will send you responses. So we had to build protection against those things.”

Open Source

Like all good engineers, Sugu and his co-developer were in no mood of reimplementing their scalability solution from scratch, if and when their career took them elsewhere. So they seeked approval from Google for open sourcing Vitess, who approved the request after making sure there wasn’t anything proprietary in their code.

Open Sourcing Vitess is what eventually led to Sugu leaving YouTube to start a services company around Vitess called PlanetScale

“YouTube, at some point of time was happy with where Vitess was. But what had happened is the community had taken notice of the project and there was a big interest of people wanting to adopt it and there was a huge request for features.”

So on the one hand you had a company that wasn’t interested in pooling resources for essentially building an infrastructure component and on the other you had a skeptical community hesitant to commit to a project from a company whose core competency is not infrastructure.

“So that's when we kind of came to the conclusion that this project has gained momentum and for it to be healthy, it needs to have somebody to take care of it dedicated. The way we worked it out is YouTube donated the project to CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation) and then I left to start PlanetScale with my co-founder.”

Reversing the trend

When asked about some of the teething troubles with Vitess, Sugu said that the biggest one for them at the moment is that Vitess is still not a drop in replacement: “If you move to Vitess 90% of your queries will work, [but] you do have to address that 10% in some form or the other.”

He also mentioned that Vitess doesn’t yet support OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) queries. But it’s not something they are hugely worried about since users usually just export the data into an OLAP system like Snowflake, Pinot, or Presto: “So it's not a huge pain point, but they do want a unified solution.”

Sugu is excited about a new feature called VReplication, which allows users “to basically materialise a table from one key space into another key space.” Sugu points out that since the rules of materialisation are completely flexible, the number of applications for this feature are enormous: “And it also solves some core problems that sharding itself has. For example, if you have a hierarchical relationship, then it's easy to shard. But it isn’t so simple if you have many to many relationships. VReplication solves that problem by allowing you to materialise the same table in multiple places.” The feature has about half a dozen use cases that Sugu illustrated in his talk at the event.

As we end our conversation, Sugu says both he and his co-founder believe that the database industry took the wrong decision when they turned away from relational databases into key value stores: “It was a necessity because the relational databases refused to answer the demand of scalability. If they had answered that demand, people would not have gone to key value stores. Our vision is to hopefully reverse that trend to the extent possible since now you can scale relational databases.”

Google Cloud server left a billion people's data unsecured

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:34 AM PST

A security researcher recently discovered an unsecured database online which contained the personal information of 1.2bn users including their social media accounts, email addresses and phone numbers.

A majority of the data contained in the database was collected by a company called People Data Labs according to the CEO of Night Lion Security, Vinny Troia who first discovered it last month.

People Data Labs provides its customers with easy access to work emails and social media account details of over 70 percent of the decision makers in the US, UK and Canada. The company scrapes this data from various sources online and on its website, People Data Labs explains that it can even deliver this data straight to its customers, saying:

“A dataset of resume, contact, social, and demographic information for over 1.5 Billion unique individuals, delivered to you at the scale you need it. With just a few lines of code, you can begin enriching anywhere from dozens to billions of records with over 150 data points. If you don’t have the time, we can deliver the data straight to you via S3, SFTP, Google Drive, Elasticsearch.”

Unsecured database

The unprotected data was found on a Google Cloud server and while it was originally sourced by People Data Labs, one of the company's customers was responsible for leaving it unsecured.

The company's co-founder and CEO, Sean Thorne explained that some of the exposed data did come from it though he suspects that it was aggregated by another firm which was merging various data points.

Vinny Troia was conducting a routine scan for unprotected data online when he made the discovery of the four terabyte database, after which he notified the FBI. Troia explained that the information contained in this latest data dump could easily be leveraged by cybercriminals, saying:

“This is the first time ever that I’ve seen emails, names and numbers linked with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Github profiles all in one spot. There are no passwords related to this data, but having a new, fresh set of passwords isn’t that exciting anymore. Having all of this social media stuff in one place is a useful weapon and investigative tool.”

Samsung Galaxy S11 leak paints promising picture of new design

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:23 AM PST

We’ve heard plenty of rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S11 and now we’re also getting a close look at the possible design, thanks to some detailed leaked renders.

Shared by 91mobiles and @OnLeaks (a leaker with a great track record), the renders show a phone with a single-lens punch-hole camera in the top center of the screen. It’s a placement that’s more like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 than the Samsung Galaxy S10, but it’s something that we’ve heard before.

The bezels above and below the screen appear slightly smaller than on the Galaxy S10 range, and the screen is also apparently slightly less curvy, while the display itself is said to be between 6.3 and 6.7 inches in size (likely depending on which model you opt for).

Moving to the back, you’ll note that there’s a large camera block which appears to house five lenses, along with a flash and what’s likely a laser autofocus. The source adds that one of the lenses should be a 3D Time-of-Flight one for judging depth, and based on earlier leaks we’re also expecting a 108MP lens.

Cameras aside, there’s not much going on with the glass back, just the expected Samsung logo. The bottom edge of the Samsung Galaxy S11 meanwhile is shown as having a USB-C port and speakers, while the right edge houses the power and volume buttons.

Finally, the frame is said to be metal and the dimensions are apparently 161.9 x 73.7 x 7.8mm (rising to 8.9mm at the camera bump).

For reference, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is 157.6 x 74.1 x 7.8mm, so the S11 could be longer but slightly narrower, which might mean rumors of a 20:9 aspect ratio are accurate, as that would likely lead to a narrower screen than the 19:9 Galaxy S10 Plus.

In all though, other than the position of the cameras the Samsung Galaxy S11 looks a lot like the S10 range if these images are accurate.

A new date and leaked specs

This isn’t the only Samsung Galaxy S11 news though, as MatrixLife claims to have “official” information on the Galaxy S11 range, saying that it will be announced on February 11 and hit stores at some point in March. Notably that’s at odds with an earlier rumor, which pointed to a February 18 announcement.

MatrixLife also says that there will be an S11 Plus and a Galaxy S11e alongside the main handset, that the two higher-end handsets will have a 120Hz refresh rate (as has been rumored), and that the Galaxy S10 Plus will have a 6.9-inch screen.

The site also points to an Exynos 990 chipset, 25W fast charging, a 108MP main camera, and a 48MP telephoto lens with 10x lossless zoom and a massive 100x hybrid zoom.

We would however take this leak with a serious side of salt, as while some of these details have been leaked before, the source has no real track record. Still, we’d expect to hear plenty more about the Samsung Galaxy S11 range in the coming weeks and months, and we’ll be sure to bring you all the key news.

Best dash cam 2019: 8 car-ready cameras for peace of mind

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 10:09 AM PST

A dash cam isn’t merely for capturing footage of an asteroid strike or an escaped herd of cows causing havoc on the M4 – the imagery captured by these diminutive devices can be essential in the unfortunate event of an insurance claim and can even help lower premiums.

There is an enormous amount of choice currently on the market and finding the best dash cam for your needs can seem exhausting, with myriad features and price points making the decision to splash the budget feel pointless when there are cheaper options that appear to do exactly the same thing.

But the reality is, the more you spend on a top quality dash cam, the more built-in features you receive. These include auto record and save functionality, a CCTV mode when the vehicle is parked, and even the ability to control other smart devices via Amazon Alexa skills.

However, it is easy to get carried away with trick features and forget the sole purpose of a dash cam: to record and save top quality footage that will assist in the event of an accident. For this reason, it pays to spend slightly more and bag a cam that boasts the sharpest image (in both daylight and at night) and the highest resolution, as it can mean the difference between reading the numberplate of an evil hit-and-run driver or not.

We’ve sifted through a number of the best performing dash cams on the market to decide which brands really offer the best of the best, covering a number of price points and built-in features that should appease an array of budgets and requirements.

Remember, we're approaching the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals very soon – so if you're looking to save money, the humble dash cam could be one of those things that gets a discount... so bookmark those pages listed to see our hand-curated deals listing.

Best dash cam 2019 at a glance:

  1. Nextbase 522GW
  2. Garmin Dash Cam 66W
  3. Kenwood DRV-830
  4. Thinkware TW-F770
  5. BlackVue DR900S-2CH
  6. Vantrue N2 Pro
  7. Cobra CDR 840
  8. YI Smart Dash Camera

Best dash cam: what to look for

Generally the best dash cams have similar technology to one another, and, for the most part, mount somewhere along a car's front windscreen or windshield. Of course, wherever you place your dash cam must not block your view of the road.

The advent of rear-facing cameras (or complete kits that contain both front and rear) require a little extra instillation, as these often involve cables that run from front to back. Expect some fiddly work involving the car's headliner to get these fitted correctly.

Dash cams record smaller snippets of footage, usually in increments of one to two minutes at a time. The cameras continually record over the oldest clip in order to keep the memory card from filling up as well.

While older models typically required the user to manually save or tag the appropriate clip in the event of an accident, new G-Sensor-based incident detection technology has taken over, and now takes care of this automatically.

There are also dash cams that boast additional features that, just like any other technology, translate to a higher asking price.

There are also dash cams that boast additional features that, just like any other technology, translate to a higher asking price.

These extra features can include multiple lenses for front- and rear-facing coverage, together with a more refined sensor for better video quality. Some cameras only record 720p HD footage, for example, while many others now offer Full HD (1080p) and 4K capture. Night vision and built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth for easy file transfer may also be included.

A rise in popularity of voice control has also made its way over to the humble dash cam, so expect Alexa integration and other such voice-activated technology at the very pinnacle of the range.

Numerous parking modes are also possibilities. These use a time-lapse feature as a surveillance function to capture details of those irksome car park prangs when you're off running errands.

Whenever we get a new dash cam review in, we'll update this list with more of the best we've tested. Keep reading to find out which rank among the best dash cams 2019!

Best dash cams in 2019

Nextbase has long been a name associated with top-quality dash cams, and its latest Series 2 range is arguably the best yet. This top-spec 522GW model does the basics very well, thanks to a crisp 1440p HD resolution and wide-angle lens, but also throws in plenty of additional features.

There is a reactive three-inch touchscreen at the back, as well as the option of using the built-in Alexa functionality. Currently, users can ask Alexa to play music, place calls and listen to audiobooks through connected devices, but they'll soon be able to use an upcoming Dash Cam Skill to command it to ‘start recording’, ‘stop recording’, ‘protect a recording’ and ‘send to my phone’.

That all might seem like a bit of a gimmick and, to be honest, we didn't use it all that much, so it is lucky that the remainder of the UX is extremely simple. Videos can be quickly and easily shared to a smart device via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, while a clever Emergency SOS system will alert the emergency services of your location and other details if you prove unresponsive following an accident.

We've often rated the Garmin dash cam offerings for their ease of use, and new to the party is its concise line of cute, inconspicuous dash cams, which piggyback on the marque's action camera user interface but boast plenty of features that make them a valuable assistant on the open road.

This more expensive and latest 66W unit is the one to go for in our eyes, simply because the inclusion of the massively wide 180-degree viewing angle lens makes it the master of capturing everything that's going on ahead – although there is some distortion at the very edge of the frame.

There are very few dash cams that don't automatically record and save footage when a built-in G-sensor detects and accident and that's exactly what Garmin has implemented here too.

On top of this, users can operate the 66W using voice commands, such as 'OK, Garmin, save video' and 'take a picture,' but we found this system a little clunky when out on the noisy motorway.

Footage is largely excellent and performance in low-light situations is very good but arguably its greatest appeal is the neat and tidy package. It is small, inconspicuous and doesn't cost the earth.

Kenwood DRV-830

Kenwood might be a brand that’s most associated with sub-woofers and colorful head units favored by boy racers, but its recent line of dash cams is sleek and packed with cutting-edge technology. Oh, and they’re very good too.

This DRV-830 unit might not be compatible with existing Kenwood head units (you’ll need the DRV-520 for that) but it sports it own 3-inch full color TFT display, making reviewing and saving clips a doddle.

The viewing angle of 144-degrees is among some of the widest on the market and the 1440p footage is perfectly good in both day and low light conditions. Granted, it can’t keep up with the Nextbase or hideously expensive BlackVue models for image quality, but it belies its sub-£100 price tag.

Advanced driver assist systems, such as lane departure and front collision warnings, are built into the system, but many will find them a tad annoying. Thankfully, they can be switched off by rummaging through the numerous settings.

Footage is automatically captured via 3-axis G-Force detection hardware and the camera will manage storage by overwriting any older files that haven’t been saved. That said, if you are the sort of person who likes to regularly save clips, this camera boasts some of the largest memory available thanks to two SDHC micro card slots, capable of a massive 256GB with the appropriate cards.

Thanks to an excellent 2.19MP Sony Exmor CMOS sensor and Full HD recording, the TW-F770 has cracking video footage as its star attraction – although a handful of extra flourishes provide an added bonus.

Designed to be mounted just beneath the rear-view mirror, the TW-F770 features just a few small buttons and no external screen. The reason? It can be linked to a smartphone via its on-board Wi-Fi.

This enables clips to be quickly and easily sent to a smart device, should you need to access them quickly, but it does add an additional step to any settings and menu changes.

A Super Night Vision feature boosts low-light settings for improved image quality at night, while a neat Time Lapse feature acts as a CCTV camera when the vehicle is parked. Bear in mind that this mode will require hard-wiring the unit into the vehicle's power supply, however, as is the case with most cameras featured on this list, rather than simply using a standard 12V lighter adaptor.

An on-board GPS tracker, as well as speed and upcoming red traffic signal warnings make this a very accomplished piece of kit.

Those doing high mileage on a regular basis, braving all conditions and types of roads, will likely want to part with a little extra for their dash cam. We're not suggesting the camera needs to boast lots of fancy gizmos and superfluous tech, but spending a bit more means image quality is improved.

This is very handy in the case of an accident, especially in a hit-and-run scenario, where reading a number plate from a distance and making out any distinguishing features can be the difference between catching a perpetrator and ending up with a hefty insurance claim.

Sitting very much at the premium end of the dash cam spectrum, this package from BlackVue includes front- and rear-facing cameras, both of which capture the action in HD quality.

Its circa-£500 price tag might feel incredibly steep for a dash cam, but this is the only camera to feature an 8MP CMOS sensor up front and a high-performance Sony STARVIS CMOS sensor in the rear camera. As a result, the footage is undeniably the best on the market, day and night.

The 162-degree field of view feels absolutely perfect for the task in hand and rids the resulting footage of that awkward fisheye look that some wider-angle cameras suffer from.

Paranoid owners can also make use of BlackVue's advanced intelligent park mode, which essentially carries on recording when the vehicle is powered down. This is possible thanks to the Power Magic Pro, which is wired in to the vehicle's battery and ensures the dash cam doesn't deplete reserves when recording overnight.

You can expect all of the obvious features, too, including built-in GPS, incident detection and the ability to send clips to BlackVue's bespoke smartphone app via the on-board Wi-Fi.

Alternatively, users can make the most of BlackVue's over-the-cloud storage offering or remotely check in on a parked vehicle (via the app) and view real-time footage from the camera.

Vantrue N2 Pro

Type the words ‘dash cam’ into Amazon and the number of search results that appear can be intimidating. But nestled in amongst the pile of offerings is this Chinese brand that flaunts professional spec dash cams that cost up to half as much as some of the market leaders.

The front lens, which is arguably the most important here, is comprised of six individual glass elements and packs a whopping f/1.8 aperture, making it brilliant for capturing crisp imagery in low light situations.

On top of this, a second f/2 lens faces the cabin and is supported by four IR LED lights to boost what is often tricky, gloomy footage via an excellent Sony IMX323 sensor. Although not for everyone, this sort of functionality is perfect for professional drivers who may or may not want to relive any incidents that occur late on a Friday night. There’s also a built-in microphone to record sound.

Continuous loop recording is a given here, as is G-sensor technology that detects an incident and will automatically save the footage to the MicroSD card. However, buyers will have to plump for an optional GPS mount that saves data on speed and location alongside the video file.

Thanks largely to the brilliant Sony sensor, image quality is generally very good and linking the device to a laptop or PC is as simple as it gets. Front and rear footage is handily divided into two separate files too, reducing the time spent browsing the various folders for the desired clip.

Parking Mode is also good value at this price point, as it can be switched on to auto record whenever it senses motion. Alas, it requires a power source, so needs to either be hard-wired into the vehicle via a separate accessory or attached to an external power source.

A dashcam isn't exactly the sort of thing you purchase for its smouldering looks, but the Cobra CDR 840 is one of the very few units on this list that seems to have been designed with aesthetics in mind.

The rear touchscreen may be small, but it's sharp and very easy to navigate thanks to a simple joypad-style switch interface, with a clearly labelled, bright red button for manually saving important clips.

Built-in GPS will take care of speed and location, while the G-Sensor tech will automatically save clips should the device detect an accident.

The GPS system can prove a little touch-and-go if satellites are difficult to reach or if adverse weather is playing havoc with the signal, but this is another unit that's very quick and easy to set up, with minimal on-going attention required.

Yi is a recent entrant into the action camera arena, and it's also busy plying its trade in the world of dashcams with some neat units that cram a large amount of technology into tiny shells.

The huge field of view on its Smart Dash Camera model means it can monitor the surrounding area and even warn the driver if the vehicle is straying out of its lane. On top of that, a forward collision warning sounds if the device senses an impending impact with the vehicle ahead.

This is all part of the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) package, which works in conjunction with G-Sensor technology, and it allows the camera to automatically record and save clips in an emergency situation.

An impressive all-glass, high-resolution lens and f/1.8 aperture means that video recorded in low-light situations is crisp and clear too. The lack of GPS is a bit of a shame, but this is still a commendable unit at a great price.

Also consider...

The Fly12 CE from Cycliq isn't a dash cam for you car, but for cyclists. Packing a 600 Lumen front bike light, the Fly12 CE can record in Full HD footage at up to 60fps in either 5-, 10- or 15-minute segments, while the 6-axis image stabilization system delivers smooth footage.

One very neat feature is the Incident mode. If the Fly12 CE tilts over 60 degrees – falling off your bike in most instances – it will automatically lock and store the footage immediately before and after.

Thanks to ANT+ connectivity, you can connect it to your Garmin cycling computer to control the Fly12 CE on the go. There's also a handy app as well that provides greater control over the camera/light.

Waterproof down to 1m, it should stand up to some wet rides, while the battery life is good for 8 hours (4-5 hours if you're going to be using the light as well).

Three's best ever SIM only deal is back! Unlimited data at half the price

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 09:30 AM PST

We're a bit confused about Three's Black Friday SIM-only strategy here. First, they pulled out the lowest price yet on unlimited data, blowing all other competition out of the water. And now, they've gone and brought back another unbeatable offer on unlimited data.

However, this deal is a little bit different from the one they've been running for the past week or two. Where its older offer lands you unlimited data for £18 a month, its latest drops that price down to just £10 a month...impressive right?

Obviously, keeping that price through the entirety of your contract would be insane! Instead, Three offers unlimited data at that £10 price for the first six months. Then, the price doubles to £20 for the last 18 months.

Not sounding so good now? Not only is £20 a month on its own an excellent price for an unlimited data cap but with the half-price months thrown in, it absolutely destroys the competition.

Want to see just how good these two offers from Three are? Compare them to the rest of the SIM-only deals available right now.

Three's half price SIM only deal promotion:

Three's £18 a month unlimited SIMO:

Why should you choose Three Mobile?

If you haven't already been won over by this amazing offer from Three then you'll be excited to hear that the network doesn't shy away from offering up some extra incentives as well.

Whether that be free exclusive prizes or extra roaming. You can see all of the best parts of a Three SIM only deal or Three mobile deals down below.

  • Go Roam - Roaming abilities in 71 worldwide countries at no extra cost

Get Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC for $44 in Green Man Gaming's Black Friday sale

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 09:30 AM PST

PC players waited a year for Red Dead Redemption 2 to come to PC. If you decided to wait another month, you can now get Rockstar's open world epic Western for 26% off at Green Man Gaming in their Black Friday sale. If you're in the US, that's $44.15, or £40.17 in the UK. You'll have to use it on Rockstar's own game launcher rather than with an existing client like Steam, but it's way below the $59.99 Rockstar charges for it directly.

That's enough game to last you for the next few months. And this discount has come at just the right time: this week, Rockstar patched RDR2 on PC to remove most of its outstanding technical issues. This is the only version of the game that supports frame rates above 30fps. If you've got the hardware, that is.

Next up, get excellent Obsidian RPG The Outer Worlds on PC for $40.49. Note it has to be redeemed on the Epic Games Store, if you're waiting for a Steam release after the exclusivity period has ended (you can also play it on Game Pass for PC, FYI).

The other highlight from the Green Man Gaming sale is Borderlands 3, although this again is the Epic Games Store version, in case you wanted to wait until the Steam release next September.

Check out the rest of the Black Friday deals over at Green Man Gaming, and see if anything else looks like a winner.

Hurry! The Apple AirPods Pro are back down to their lowest price on Amazon

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 09:10 AM PST

The Apple AirPods Pro may be less than a month old, but they've had a price cut just in time for the Black Friday 2019 sales.

At the time of publishing, you can pick up a pair of the Apple AirPods Pro for $234.98 from Amazon, which includes free shipping. But we recommend you act fast, this deal may not last for long.

Granted this may only be a $15 saving on the original price of the AirPods Pro, but it's significant given they're so new. After all, when the original AirPods were released, the biggest discount we saw was a mere $7.

If you're not sure whether the new AirPods from Apple are for you, then head to our Apple AirPods Pro review to find out why we gave them 4 and a half stars out of 5 - and the damn things finally stay in our ears.

Will we see another saving? Well, it's unlikely so close to the launch - so while it could happen, we expect things to not go much lower than this.

If you want to check the live prices, our widget below will help you find the best in your region - especially good if you're not in the US and sad about missing out now...

BT's Black Friday broadband deals have arrived - but can you get better elsewhere?

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 09:00 AM PST

One week out from Black Friday and BT has officially gone live with its seasonal sales. So phones, AirPods, SIM only deals with a juicy free gift and, crucially, broadband deals are all included.

In respect to the latter, they're not half bad. As ever, BT's best value offer is its Superfast Fibre plan that offers eye-catching 50Mb average speeds, unlimited weekend landline calls and free activation for only £28.99 per month.

In fact, BT has gone and improved this package further by upping the value of its ever-present Reward Card. That is, a pre-paid Mastercard you can spend on pretty much whatever you please in-store or online. It's now worth a juicy £120, which you can either consider a handy sum of cash as Christmas approaches or an amount to effectively reduce the monthly payments down to less than £25 a month. And its broadband and TV deals that now throw in half-price BT Sport and 6 months free Amazon Prime Video are also tempting.

But before you go ahead and sign up to BT quite yet, just take a moment to consider whether you can get better value elsewhere. Like with any other tech item or service, Black Friday has become a happy hunting ground for people in the UK trying to save on internet bills, too. So keep reading to learn more about BT's best broadband deal and then scroll even further still to see the best of the rest.

BT's brand new broadband deal in full:

The UK's other best Black Friday broadband deals

What is a BT Reward Card?

The Reward Card that BT sends out is a pre-paid credit card that you can use anywhere that accepts Mastercard. In short, that's around a million shops, cafes and restaurants around the world, so you shouldn't find it difficult to find places to spend, spend, spend.

It's an old-fashioned chip and pin card, rather than contactless. But do make sure that you claim your Reward Card within three months of installation, otherwise you'll lose out on all that cash.

What is print automation?

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 08:35 AM PST

Print automation is all about improving productivity and efficiency. For any company, there is most likely a vast network of printers, copiers, scanners, and other devices that help with document retrieval, storage, and output. What is sometimes missing is a strategy and a way to analyze whether employees are really making the most of those devices.

Automation helps because it means you can become more intentional. Let’s say there’s a printer located in the accounting department. Most of us view that as a single printer used by a small team, and that is essentially true. Yet, it is also part of a printer network, attached to a wired or wireless network, and is available as part of a suite of other products. Employees produce and edit documents, save them, archive them - and print them out.

When it comes to printer automation, companies can analyze, adjust, and improve their printer functionality, storage and retrieval, security, and other factors. In short, it is about optimizing how the entire printer infrastructure works and how employees utilize those resources.

Print automation can be broken down into four broad categories, each of which can help you understand how it works and how to make the most of the automation. The following categories provide a glimpse into how print automation works and how it helps.

  • Read our review on the Xerox VersaLink C405 here
  • Read our review on the Xerox VersaLink C500DN here
  • Read our review on the Xerox VersaLink C7000DN here
  • Read our review on the Xerox WorkCentre 6515 here

1. Analyze workflows

Before looking into any technical aspects, including which devices you use and how often they print, it’s important to analyze the workflows. Print automation is mostly concerned with the business workflow and how it can improve. Otherwise, any automation would be only about improving the technology and the devices employees use without focusing on whether they are actually productive. The most important consideration for all printer automation is: Does the company benefit from the printers and copiers to the greatest extent?

This can involve analyzing how often employees print, what they are printing, and which devices they use the most often - among many other variables. Automation hinges on this analysis step because it means you are determining where there are bottlenecks and roadblocks.

An example here is when a printer is under-utilized. Printer automation is not just about speeding up print times or fine-tuning a network for security, it is also about improving efficiencies on any given device. With this analysis, you can automate things like re-routing print jobs, making it easier for employees to print (say, by using their identification badge), and even removing a printer from service to put more of a load on a printer that is used often.

2. Investigate security issues

Part of the print automation process includes investigating any security issues. You can automate and improve the workflow all day long at a company, but if the security is not airtight, then problems can occur - which means cost overruns and lost productivity. Any print automation strategy has to include security as a backbone of the effort because of how critical it is to make sure hackers and criminals can’t compromise your printer network.

For example, at some companies, the security infrastructure can cause slowdowns or even failures when it comes to accessing specific devices. Once again, automation is not just a step to speed up printer access and output. It might involve tweaking security settings for more efficient printing, or it might mean adding a fingerprint reader or some other biometric technology that speeds up how quickly an employee can retrieve printed documents.

3. Generate a detailed report

The truth is in the details. This is especially true when it comes to print automation because companies can discover where there are inefficiencies. Print automation almost always involves reports and dashboard views to help managers and thought leaders at a companies make decisions about how to automate. The report might provide details about changing where printers are located, tweaking security settings, and improving workflows.

The important reminder here is to use this data carefully and intentionally. Printer automation is helpful but it doesn’t have to be carried out quickly or impulsively. A careful reading of printer automation reports and dashboards, especially at a larger company with many devices used by various departments and third-party visitors, will help you in the implementation stage.

4. Make print workflow changes

A final step is to make the suggested changes after analyzing the workflows and the reports. This is where printer automation moves from a data analytics exercise into the implementation stage, and where there are real and tangible benefits to the business.

An example of how this can help? Let’s say you find out that you have a greater need for printer outputs in one specific department such as marketing or development. Print automation looks at the big picture and can determine where you need to add another printer or copier. Printer automation then involves making these changes to the workflow and can also mean making physical changes in how devices are used and where they are located.

This is where a careful analysis and implementation strategy helps - you want to make sure any changes improve productivity and actually do automate the process for employees. Change for the sake of change won’t work, and it’s important to avoid experimentation. It’s critical that you know how automation changes will impact employee productivity and workflows.

At this stage - once you have analyzed needs, examined security issues, and made the updates required - it is critical to continue automating. Too often, companies will make a grand gesture to automate their printers, copiers, and network to accommodate new features such as biometric authentication, and then trust that this automation will last for years and years. Automation has to be ongoing, so it is best to continue the analysis and updates to stay on top of any technological advances. Automation will definitely make an impact, but it can make an even greater impact when you continue to look into changes that will help employees make the most of the network and the devices you currently own.

Three 5G launch delayed until Q1 2020

Posted: 22 Nov 2019 08:28 AM PST

Three has delayed the launch of 5G mobile services on its network until early next year, saying it needs more time to get it ready.

The operator launched Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services on 5G in central London earlier this August and intended to offer mobile services in 25 towns and cities before the end of 2019.

It said that although it had doubled the number of 5G masts in the capital, and upgraded more than 1,400 sites to 5G already, it wanted to make sure all elements of the network were in order before it launched commercially.

Three 5G launch delay

This includes backhaul, getting planning permission from landlords, and migrating more customers to its cloud core network. It is now expected that Three 5G will go live in Q1 2020.

“Some of these components are more time consuming and complex than others, and, as a result, our 5G roll out is slightly behind our original plan,” said Three.

EE was the first mobile operator to launch 5G in May, with Vodafone going live later in the summer, and O2 switching its 5G network last month. Three was also the last UK operator to offer 4G mobile services, but a late launch is unlikely to harm its long-term prospects.

5G coverage from its rivals is still limited while there isn’t the same capacity crunch that made 4G so desirable back in 2012. UK operators have been among the first to launch 5G whereas they were comparatively late with 4G.

Three is the UK’s smallest mobile operator but believes 5G will allow it to lead the market for the first time thanks to its spectrum holdings. Thanks to auction victories and the acquisition of UK Broadband, Three says it has the most usable 5G spectrum of any UK network and that it has 100 MHz of contiguous 3.4GHz airwaves that will allow it to offer the fastest, most reliable connection.

All Three users with a compatible phone will be able to access 5G at no extra cost.
