Super Bowl 2020 live stream: how to watch Chiefs vs 49ers online free and without commercials

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 02:10 PM PST

The San Francisco 49ers will be facing the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LIV this Sunday, and we really have no idea who will come out on top! But what we can tell you is pretty much all you need to know to get a Super Bowl 2020 live stream - including all the free options, no matter where in the world you are (or with a VPN), and even without having to sit through the commercials.

Between the 49ers' stellar defensive tackles and the Chiefs' incredible offense it's very difficult to tell who emerge as the winning team at this year's big one.

The 49ers convincingly beat the Packers 37-20 in their conference final. Not only was their defensive tackle impressive but they also managed to run the ball 42 times for 285 yards throughout the game. That sounds like Super Bowl-winning kind of form! While, the Chiefs managed to eliminate the plucky Titans, highlighted by Patrick Mahomes's incredible 27-yard touchdown.

And if you're equally looking forward to the entertainment part of the Super Bowl (we don't blame you) you definitely should be! Shakira and Jennifer Lopez have teased aspects of their performances but it's set to be an amazing spectacle.

The iPhone SE 2 may be the iPhone 9 we really want

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 02:05 PM PST

There’s a reason people have been eagerly awaiting the iPhone SE 2: to herald in a new era of the best iOS and iPhone functionality at a low cost.

But folks also appreciated the original iPhone SE’s home button, and with it, Touch ID. The upcoming ‘New Spring iPhone 2020’ - presumed to be the iPhone SE 2 - will retain the home button, according to noted leaker Evan Blass, and we have little reason to doubt it.

But would Apple let one of its brand-new handsets have a low-tech authentication method given how much it’s invested in facial recognition with Face ID?

Absent Blass’ intel and solid track record, we’d be skeptical. True, Apple still produces the home button-packing iPhone 8, but that handset debuted in 2017, and currently sells it as a budget model. But it’s very likely that Apple will replace the 8 with this new iPhone SE 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) - which means the company has virtually a clean slate.

Apple has pointedly chosen not to develop in-screen fingerprint sensors, unlike all of the flagship Android phones that rival the top-tier iPhones, and relies on Face ID for all its authentication. So we honestly doubt Apple would allow the iPhone SE 2 to have both Face ID and Touch ID.

Because that would give consumers what they really want.

iPhone SE

Apple philosophy: designing for what you’ll crave tomorrow, not what you want today

Apple’s age-old philosophy of designing products that consumers will want once they see them, not designing for what consumers say they want, still feels like a guiding principle. This is peppered through the company’s successes, from imitating and refining Xerox’s GUI and mouse with the Macintosh in the 1980s to pushing for the nearly all-screen iPhone in 2007.

The oft-cited Steve Jobs quote - “Our job is to figure out what they’re going to want before they do” - seems to characterize Apple’s resistance to bow to customer desires. For years, the company has ignored calls for a switch to USB-C port (iPhone), not just having USB-C  ports (MacBook), and longer battery life (Apple Watch).

So we’d be reluctant to guess Apple would allow the iPhone SE 2 to have both Touch ID and Face ID, because consumers have wanted that for years. Rationally, there’s reason for Apple to resist a return to fingerprint authentication, even if plenty of apps still allow it in order to cater to older iPhone and iPad owners: they don’t go back on their tech.

Think about the company’s bold choices: killing the disk drive in the original iMac, killing the 3.5mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7, and killing the CD-ROM in the MacBook Air. Apple’s reputation is built on confidently choosing to excise tech in order to force transition to, usually, a new data transmission standard.

In this case, that data is your biometric password, and Apple has little reason to cater to consumer comfort if its ecosystem has been lurching toward relying solely on facial recognition, with fewer touch-only devices supported in nearly every annual milestone OS update for its family of devices.

A compromise?

Granted, there is ONE compromise that accounts for Blass’ iPhone SE 2 scoop, but it seems baffling: allow a home button, but don’t give it Touch ID.

That would seem like more trouble than it’s worth: surely Apple’s production lines churning out Touch ID home buttons for older iPhones and iPads could be repurposed to strip out the fingerprint identification, but the point of the SE 2 is to carve out more of the budget market. Fingerprint sensors are found in inexpensive phones because they’re cheaper.

We would love to be proven wrong, especially since the iPhone SE 2 runs a bit counter to Apple’s strategy of hiking up phone prices anyway. If the new handset truly embraces budget design with Touch ID, well, couldn’t we see a return of other long-lost features? Would Apple finally be bending to consumer desires? We’ll have to wait until the iPhone SE 2 comes out - rumor has it, in early 2020 - to find out.

  • If Apple doesn't release the iPhone SE 2 soon, here are the best iPhones just in case

Best business tablets of 2020: top picks for productivity slates

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 01:34 PM PST

Below is a list of the best business tablets, whether you need a new slate for creativity, reading through documents on the go, or managing different systems or channels at the same time. These will help you stay productive on the go, saving you the trouble of dragging around one of the best laptops.

You might not consider tablets as one of the essential tools of a business, but these fantastic Android and Apple tablets could help transform your work life, with plenty of productivity apps and features that can be installed or utilized.

Plus, let's not forget about the best Windows tablets either, as they’ll let you run any app or program you’d typically find on a traditional laptop.

Add Bluetooth keyboards, styluses, and perhaps a great pair of noise cancelling headphones too, these great business tablets become formidable work machines.

For the sake of clarity, we’ll only look at pure tablets, and detachables when it comes to convertibles. The best 2-in-1 laptops are too close to traditional laptops, as their keyboard can’t be totally detached.

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

Microsoft’s Surface Pro lineup is often found at the top of our list for best business tablets, and the latest version – the Surface Pro 6 – is no different. This takes what we've loved from previous versions and refined it. So, it's not a revolutionary new tablet that does everything new, but a solid business tablet that does everything right. So, it's got that gorgeous design and build quality, plus a new black color option, plus some of the latest mobile tech crammed into its body. However, once again it doesn't include the Type Cover for turning it into a laptop-like device, nor the Surface Pen stylus, which is a bit mean considering the price.

You might be wondering why the Surface Pro 6 tops this list when the Surface Pro 7 exists (and has a lower-ranking position in this list). Well, you'll have to read that entry to know in detail, but we didn't find it a big enough improvement to justify over the Surface Pro 6.

Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Pro 6

iPad Pro 12.9 (2018)

The iPad Pro 12.9 (2018) is the best business tablet if you want a large, vibrant screen, thanks to its huge 12.9-inch display and 2048 x 2732 resolution. It's a simply stunning tablet to look at and use, and it's ideal for creatives, as its large touchscreen makes for a fantastic canvas. It's got the power to back it up as well, with some of Apple's most powerful hardware inside. With its unrivaled processing power, massive display, snappy operating system, and the fact you can use it with the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, it's definitely a tablet you should consider for your business. The only issue is that it's expensive. Very expensive.

Read our full review: iPad Pro 12.9 (2018)

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet

We were big fans of the original Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet, but this third-gen model is just fantastic. It's a powerful laptop with a removable keyboard, leaving you a robust tablet, which makes it great if you need a device for different circumstances and situations.

You're getting plenty of features here that make it one of the best business tablets around - the ThinkPad Pen Pro stylus comes with the tablet, so you don't need to buy any peripherals, there are multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports, and you've got a big 3K touchscreen too.

Sure, it's quite a bulky device, so you might have trouble working on a cramped bus or train, and the battery life still isn't what we'd expect. But generally, the third-generation Lenovo ThinkPad x1 Tablet is great for your business needs.

Read the full review: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet (3rd Gen)

Microsoft Surface Pro 4

The best business tablet isn't necessarily the newest, which is why the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 doesn't top this list, but it's still a decent device that could be useful for you depending on what you need from your slate.

We didn't find the Surface Pro 7 a huge upgrade on the Surface Pro 6, which is why the newer tablet didn't topple its predecessor, as the older slate is more affordable now.

Saying that, there are some upgrades you might appreciate. There's the high-speed Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and also USB-C ports, which the Pro 6 lacks. On top of that, the performance sees a boost, so if you need a processing powerhouse, this might be the Microsoft device for you.

Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Pro 6

Lenovo shows it is just as good at making 2-in-1 devices that are excellent business tablets with the Lenovo Miix 510, a follow up to the Miix 700 (yes, we know, confusing) with a new latest-gen Kaby Lake version of the Core i5 and a strong central pairing of 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. It comes with a detachable keyboard and costs a lot less than Microsoft's Surface Pro line of business tablets, and for the most part it offers similar functionality. This is definitely a business tablet worth considering if your budget doesn't stretch to a Microsoft (or Apple) device.

Read the full review: Lenovo Miix 510

If you're looking for the best budget business tablet, then the Microsoft Surface Go should definitely be considered. It's thin, light, portable and elegant without sacrificing the ability to get some work done, and Microsoft has packed in everything they could in a device at a low price point. If you're often working while travelling, then it's a brilliant choice, thanks to its slimline design and reliable build quality that we've come to expect from Microsoft's Surface products.

Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Go

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

If the best business tablet for you must be an Android device, then perhaps Samsung has you covered - its most recent slate is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6.

This top-end piece of kit comes with the S Pen stylus included, so your only extra costs could be the keyboard cover, and of course the tablet has all the staples of a Samsung device, including a beautiful screen and its One UI interface.

If you're looking for a slate with an operating system modelled after a smartphone OS, this might be as close to an iPad Pro as you'll get, and in general it seems like a pretty similar device. There's plenty of processing power, decent camera capabilities, and a lightweight build - but the high price tag his here too.

Read the full review: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

If you want the versatility that the Surface Pro offers, but don’t want to pay the exorbitant price that a competent model asks, you might want to check out the Acer Switch 5. You’ll lose a bit in screen resolution and sound quality, but you’re saving hundreds of dollars. The Acer Switch 5 is one of the best business tablets for any professional who need to get work done on the go, and save some cash at the same time.

Read the full review: Acer Switch 5

Asus Transformer 3 Pro

Asus threw down the gauntlet to Microsoft with the launch of the Transformer 3 Pro. The device, which is the only tablet we know of that comes with 16GB of RAM as standard, easily surpasses the Surface Pro 4 in terms of sheer value for money although Microsoft's flagship tablet remains the better known (and probably more trusted) of the two. Other than the standard keyboard, the Transformer also has a docking station, a stylus and even a trusted platform module (TPM) for improved security within an enterprise setting.

HP Elite x2 1012 G1

Just like the rest of the competition, HP took inspiration from Microsoft's playbook when building the Elite x2 1012, which clearly targets the business market. Like Fujitsu, HP made sure that its product was designed with enterprise users in mind. It is sturdy, undergoing a 12-point stress test, is very easy to upgrade and comes with a number of security features. There's an active pen and a keyboard, and our reviewer said that typing on the latter was "as comfortable as it is on a real notebook". Not everything about the design is perfect - such as the hinge - but overall this is a tempter with a great keyboard and screen.

Sure the HP Elite x3 is newer, and has some slightly better specs. But in our review we actually scored it lower than its predecessor, for reasons like the poor app support for Windows 10 Mobile and a pretty unnecessarily big size. That's why the HP Elite 2 retains its spot on this list - for now.

Musicians should feel free to use MacBooks to make music, no matter what Neil Young thinks

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 12:42 PM PST

In a recent interview with The Verge, legendary musician Neil Young came out against the MacBook Pro, calling the new 16-inch model "a piece of crap" and "Fisher-Price" quality. That's definitely a take, but it left me wondering, has Neil Young ever heard any other laptop speakers?

I mean, as a general rule of thumb, laptop speakers aren't regarded by anyone as being the pinnacle of sound quality. In this interview, however, Neil Young uses this as a reason why folks shouldn't be creating music on a MacBook Pro, that the loss in fidelity is a "problem." It's the same energy that he presented when he said he was "saving music" with the Pono player way back in 2012.

When Young goes as far to say that Steve Jobs didn't care about quality, but rather just consumerism, that's a pretty tame take overall. I don't have an issue with that, and even agree. However, when that take is behind an incredibly elitist approach to both the consumption and creation of music, there's a lot to unpack.

I love the Dell XPS 13, I do, but wow the speakers aren't great.

Laptop speakers are bad, actually

I have a confession to make: when I'm reviewing a laptop,  the speakers are lowkey one of the most important features to my experience. I spend a lot of time listening to music, to the point where I basically carry my laptop around my apartment when I'm doing my chores instead of just getting a smart speaker like a normal person

But, wow, are most laptops packing some of the most tinny and useless speakers I've ever heard in my life. Even gorgeous top-of-the-line flagships like the Dell XPS 13 have these bottom-firing speakers that just sound downright lame. What's the point of turning up some Kim Petras if you can't hear the bass, right?

That's one of the core reasons I use a 13-inch MacBook Pro as my daily personal laptop. The speakers aren't quite up to, like, professional studio monitors, but they're still better than pretty much any other laptop speakers on the market, no matter what Neil Young says.

For most people, the speakers on the MacBook Pro, especially that shiny new 16-inch model, are far better than anything else they'll find on the market today. Now, obviously, you can connect a good pair of headphones or speakers through a DAC and get a truly more transcendent experience out of it, but that should be pretty obvious.

Still, short of recording a song, the MacBook Pro 16-inch speakers are probably fine for most casual music listening. They're punchy, loud, and can absolutely deliver where it counts.

Yeah, DACs make audio better. So?

Maybe we stop the elitism?

Of course, Neil Young isn't just a casual music listener. This is the same person that was behind the failed Pono player, a portable music player that could play back lossless audio in order to "save music." Hearing Neil Young come back with hyper-elitist takes on audio shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

In the interview, Verge Editor in Chief Nilay Patel mentions to Neil Young that kids are "starting on a MacBook, recording straight to MP3", to which Neil Young responds "Yeah, I know. But if that's what they want to put out as a record, that's a problem."

This is an incredibly lame take from Young. One of the coolest things about the music scene in 2020 is the fact that anyone can take out their laptop and start creating art and distributing it to everyone who wants to hear it. In fact, there are some great laptops for music production out there today.

This antiquated idea that albums should only be recorded in an exclusive recording studio that can cost artists thousands of dollars per session is inherently classist and elitist, and an idea we should wholeheartedly abandon. If kids are able to create art and put it out for the world to listen, shouldn't that be celebrated, rather than being sneered at for not being "high quality" enough?

Neil Young even comes up with a solution for the perceived problem: "you have to use an external DAC and do a bunch of stuff to make up for the problems that the MacBook Pro has because they’re not aimed at quality." There are definitely artists who peruse high audio fidelity and a professional creative setup to create their art, and that's totally valid. For those folks, picking up a DAC and a bunch of professional audio equipment is important.

But, for people that can't even afford that new 16-inch MacBook Pro, who just want to record some songs and upload them to Soundcloud or Bandcamp, any laptop is a totally valid way to create the art they want to create. I have the same problem with this Neil Young interview as I did when Apple head of marketing Phil Schiller said that kids using Chromebooks in school wouldn't succeed. Let people live, let people create and let people learn no matter what hardware they have access to.

At the end of the day, music belongs to the people, and the more accessible the hardware is, the better - even if it doesn't offer the most pristine audio quality in the world.

See the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and its specs before February 11

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:40 AM PST

We’ve gotten our supposed first look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip via some purportedly official renders, and if true, it’s...a far more conventional design than rumors have hinted. Frankly, it looks a lot like a thinner Samsung Galaxy S10 but folded clamshell-style.

The leaked images come courtesy of WinFuture, and they’re the most we’ve seen of the much-anticipated Samsung foldable. Assuming they’re real, these images along with a spec sheet reveal a lot about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip ahead of its possible reveal on February 11 at Samsung's Unpacked event - as well as the foldable's intended audience.

Unfolded, the Z Flip has an inner 6.7-inch OLED display at a narrow 22:9 ratio. While it’s only FHD+ (2,636 x 1,080) resolution, the leak suggests these are ‘ultra thin glass’ rather than the plastic that’s lined the interior of other foldables, including both the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Motorola Razr

Speaking of the Razr, the Z Flip copied one of its design perks, with an outer second display visible when the handset is folded up. It’s likewise small at 1.06 inches (300 x 116 resolution), but the OLED screen will likely be used akin to that on the Razr: to check time, notifications, and possibly limited photo or video shooting.

As for looks, the Z Flip looks to have a similar exterior as the recent Galaxy S-series phones - the render showed a purple rear cover, two rear cameras in a small block and a flash...and no clear indicator where that second outer display is located.

Decent, but not outstanding, specs - who's this for?

The internal specs listed in the leak are a little below top-of-the-line. The Z Flip will supposedly come with last year’s Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage - with no microSD slot to expand it. There’s no 3.5mm jack, only a USB-C port for both power and audio.

What that suggests: this isn’t a foldable aimed at folks who want the absolute best phone. Which makes sense, given this foldable format emphasizes convenience over sheer performance with a smaller device footprint rather than the maximum screen real estate.

On the other hand, it could also simply be the result of a prolonged development cycle that stretched the Z Flip beyond when those specs would be impressive - but given the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S20 and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra are specced to outpace the Z Flip, this could be the case.

A new ‘calm’ setting on the 2020 Ford Explorer is a peaceful addition

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:00 AM PST

Life in the digital age can be a little complex. Our phones buzz, chime, beep, and alert us at all hours of the day. We have bots that can tell us the weather but are also listening to everything we say. In a car, it’s even worse. A multitude of safety features beep to tell us we’re drifting out of the lane, and phone calls that pop up on the dash can be annoying.

And then there’s the 2020 Ford Explorer. In a recent test, I was digging through the center console settings – on a glorious new 12.3-inch screen – and I found a rather subtle option called 'calm'. There’s a similar setting on the screen above the steering wheel. While the calm option doesn’t quite do everything I want it to (yet), it is a step in the right direction.

Ford Explorer

In that center console, calm turns off everything and just shows a clock on a pale blue background. It’s a way to remove distractions, including the navigation, radio, and the Apple CarPlay connection. In the screen above the steering wheel, it turns off everything except the speedometer, so you can’t see any of the safety options (although they continue to function).

I really like what Ford is attempting to do here. It’s a way to remove almost every blinking light on the screens to allow you to focus on the simple act of driving. The calm setting doesn’t actually disable anything, and you will still get chimes and interruptions on your phone.

During one drive, I was using the calm setting and still received a phone call. That means it’s mostly an interface choice for what you can see while you drive, but it still worked for me.

Ford Explorer

With the screens blanked out, I didn’t feel as inundated with information. In the next iteration, it would be cool if it was not even possible to select a radio station, and maybe you could use a voice command like 'deactivate calm' to make non-safety features available again. I know the technology is already available since the Ford MyKey system can lock out the radio if the driver doesn’t fasten their seatbelt (yes, it is more of a teen driver feature).

Quiet time

My mind jumped to how this might work in all areas of life.

At home, I’d like to be able to give one command to Alexa or the Google Assistant and have those bots lower the lights and the blinds, disable incoming calls and turn off all beeps and chimes from my home security system.

At work, if I need to focus on a project, it would be cool if there was a calm setting on my laptop that turned off all incoming emails, dimmed the screen, and blocked notifications in Chrome. (I particularly hate those browser notifications, although Google is apparently working on disabling them in a future version.)

Ford Explorer

And then there’s my phone. I know it’s easy to turn off Bluetooth and Wi-fi, and to turn off notifications for apps all at once. That doesn’t really help me deal with emails that arrive using my cellular data connection (unless I turn that off as well). And, it doesn’t disable any apps. What I’d like with a phone is similar to the calm setting on the Explorer: A mode that only shows the clock and a few critical apps, but otherwise disables everything else.

For now, I like the calm mode in the Explorer. I used it more than I would have expected, possibly because distractions are becoming more common and I just need the peace.

What is AWS Snowball?

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 09:45 AM PST

In the age of incredible technological advancements on the Internet, autonomous cars, drones that can deliver a package from the sky, and instant access to social media feeds on our phones, it’s almost refreshing to know there is a service that is a little old school.

AWS Snowball is a data transfer service that uses a physical device sent by Amazon. Even though the only thing that’s “old school” is that it uses a physical product, Snowball is quite advanced in terms of what it does, how it works, and how it benefits your company.

For firms doing petabyte-scale research projects, those who have accumulated vast amounts of backup data, have a legacy tape backup system they need to move to cloud storage, or are closing an entire data center and using a cloud-based infrastructure, Snowball is a godsend.

In most cases, Snowball comes into play when there is a data migration project. There is a vast amount of data stored locally, and there’s a need to move that data to the cloud. However, because there may be petabytes of information, the Internet is not a viable option due to the speed concerns, security issues, and networking complexities.

With Snowball, there are several benefits. One is the ease of migration. It all starts with the AWS Console where you can initiate the migration with a few clicks. Once you do, Amazon determines whether you need one or more Snowball client devices. (For terabytes of data, you likely only need one client; for petabytes of data, you’ll need more than one.)

Then, the physical devices arrive at your site. You connect them to your network, and run the Snowball client application and select the data sources. After this, the migration runs at high speeds and over a secure connection (not on the Internet). Amazon uses an E Ink label for Snowball shipping, so once the migration is complete and you are ready to send back the devices, the label changes and shows the correct address for the return shipment.

As you might guess, the devices are not stashed away in a vault at this point. Amazon moves your data to Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) for easy access in the cloud. An important point to make here is that you can now take advantage of the enormous scale of cloud computing, adding additional storage archives to this one storage location. Once you migrate the data to the cloud using Snowball, the physical transfer work is all part of enabling your company in a move to a cloud infrastructure and benefiting from the reliable, secure storage. You can decide to remove portions of your S3 archives at any time.

There are benefits to how this works from a cost standpoint as well. At a petabyte or terabyte-scale, the cost of secure data transfers over the Internet can run several thousand dollars. Amazon states that Snowball migrations tend to cost about one-fifth the normal migration costs when the Internet and high-speed networks are involved.

Examples of how Snowball works

A good example of a project where Snowball comes into play is a large company that has existed for many decades and has decided to move all of their tape backup systems to the cloud. As you can imagine, this migration would normally be fraught with complexity -- how to move the data securely, dealing with terabytes or even petabytes of storage that dates back many years, and making sure the migration is successful.

With Snowball, the company can configure the migration using the AWS Console which removes the complexity of knowing which data you need to move and where it will end up. Since the migration is highly automated using the Snowball client devices and client software, the company trying to move their tape backup systems doesn’t have to build a new IT infrastructure or purchase software to help with the legacy transfers.

The benefits are, as mentioned above, lower costs and the ease of migrating, but there are also clear advantages related to what happens after you are done migrating. The data becomes available in S3 and becomes part of your cloud infrastructure. This means you can retrieve that data from the cloud just as easily and efficiently as you migrated it to the cloud. It opens up new possibilities for using the data for business intelligence, additional research projects, data discovery, enterprise-grade apps, analytics and other projects that were not possible before.

In the end, companies benefit from how Amazon has architected the entire migration system. Snowball does involve “old school” client devices shipped to your facility, but that’s where any similarity to older data transfer migration practices ends. By using physical devices, it speeds up the entire process, makes it secure, and is designed for easy, fast migrations.

Best VPS hosting providers of 2020

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 09:20 AM PST

Standard shared web hosting packages are cheap and user-friendly, but they're also slow, inflexible, and don't have the power or functionality that professional and business users often need.

If you need more than a basic host but can't afford a dedicated server or don't want to deal with the complexity of these beasts, VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting could be a smart choice.

Buying a VPS plan means that you get your very own virtual server environment. You have full control over the operating system, the extensions and apps you install, and all their settings. Each physical server will still host multiple VPS customers, but not as many as with shared hosting, and typically each VPS will be allocated a share of key resources – RAM, storage space, CPU cores – for their use alone.

This can be easier to manage than you might think. Many VPS plans include standard tools like cPanel to help monitor and configure your site. Some hosts will manage the service for you, monitoring for problems like a crashed service, and fixing them as soon as they're detected.

VPS prices and specs vary from a few dollars a month to hundreds, depending on your requirements. There's a lot of choice out there, but don't panic – our list of five best VPS providers will point you in the right direction.

Founded in 2004, Hostinger has been providing a quality hosting service for some time now and their VPS hosting is no different.

You have plenty of choices here from the low-tier plan that has 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB of storage and 1000 GB bandwidth to high-tier plan where you get 8 CPU, 8 GB RAM, 160 GB of storage and 1000 GB bandwidth.

Pricing is affordable too, especially if you commit to longer terms. The 1 CPU plan starts at $3.95 per month (if you choose the 4-year billing) and renews at $8.16 per month, while the 8 CPU plan starts at $29.95 per month (if you choose the 4-year billing) and renews at $65.56 per month.

All plans have IPv6 support, a dedicated IP, 100 Mb/s Network and a few more additions. Linux users also have plenty of choices. Apart from the usual CentOS, Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian, you can also choose Suse. Windows VPS hosting is available as well, with the plans being more pricier but also more powerful.

If you encounter any problems, there’s a 24/7 live chat service to help you. Hostinger delivers a capable VPS hosting with a very tempting first term price, and with all plans being fully refundable, everyone can try out the service.

Bluehost has been around for quite some time and always offered powerful plans for a variety of users, and their VPS range is no different.

You have three plans to choose from, with the cheapest plan starting at $17.99 per month for the first term and $29.99 per month on renewal. That gets you 2 CPU cores (2x Xeon Gold 5220), 30GB SSD  storage, 2 GB RAM, 1 TB bandwidth and one IP address. The top-tier plan called Ultimate, gives you 4 CPU cores (2x Xeon Gold 5222), 120GB SSD storage, 8 GB RAM, 3 TB bandwidth and two IP addresses, and it’s priced at $59.99 per month for the first term and $119.99 per month on renewal.

All plans come with a free SSL certificate and a 1-year domain. You also get unlimited subdomains and email accounts, and cPanel is included too. Domain privacy and protection, and SiteLock are categorized as optional add-ons, so you’ll have to pay extra if you need them.

Support is available 24/7 so if you encounter any difficulties you’ll be able to call them at any time of the day. All in all, Bluehost is a capable provider for both newbies and experienced users so they are definitely worth a try.

InMotion is one of the more popular web hosting providers out there and it is no surprise that they're secured a spot here

Check out a few VPS hosting providers and it's easy to be tempted with low headline rates, but don't be fooled – companies use a range of tricks to keep their charges down.

The hardware specs of a starter product are often kept unrealistically low, for instance, to keep the price right down. Important items – backups, cPanel – may be expensive extras. And even then, the headline rate may only apply if you pay for two or three years upfront, increasing dramatically on renewal.

InMotion Hosting is refreshingly different. Its baseline VPS-1000HA-S plan doesn't have the most eye-catching price at $24.99 per month over two years, but it's easy to see why the company asks this much. The product has a better specification – 4GB RAM, 75GB storage, 4TB bandwidth, 3 dedicated IPs – than some high-end plans from other providers, backups and a cPanel licence are included for free, and there's a 90-day money-back guarantee.

There's an unusual feature in what InMotion calls "unlocked CPU cores". Rather than having access to one or two cores only, you're able to spread your processing load across all cores on the server, a major performance boost for tasks involving a lot of simultaneous processing.

Welcome bonus touches include a feature called Launch Assist, which essentially means you get two hours of free time with one of InMotion's server administrators. Whether you need to change domain settings, configure cPanel, migrate WordPress or database files, they can help you get the job done.

Put it all together and you're getting a very capable set of VPS hosting plans. If you'd prefer a package that comes with unexpected surprises, rather than hidden catches, we'd give InMotion a try.

Some VPS hosts focus on first-time users, others go for big business, but Hostwinds does its best to appeal to everyone with no less than 10 different VPS hosting plans.

The low-end Tier One plan looks a little underpowered to us, with just 1GB RAM, one CPU core, 30GB of disk space and 1TB traffic. But it's cheap at $4.49 per month, and you can extend it significantly without spending a huge amount (adding basic server monitoring and cloud backups costs an extra $6 a month for both).

The more realistic Tier Four includes 6GB RAM, 100GB drive space, two CPU cores and 2TB of traffic. It's also significantly more expensive at $26.09 a month, but still competitive with other providers.

Meanwhile the top-of-the-range Tier Ten product gets you 96GB RAM, 16 CPU cores, 750GB storage and 9TB of traffic for an initial $296.09 a month. You probably don't need anything like that, but this does show there's plenty of scope for upgrading your site over time.

Every plan has some appealing configuration options. In particular, along with support for the usual Linux variants – CentOS, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian – you can choose Windows Server 2008, 2012 or 2016 for only a $5 a month premium. That's very good value, and if you're more familiar with Windows than Linux, it could save you from lots of management hassles later on.

Liquid Web is a premium web hosting provider which has been offering top quality managed solutions for more than 20 years, and now handles 500,000 sites for more than 32,000 customers worldwide.

The company doesn't try to beat the competition on price, instead focusing on delivering comprehensive products which will deliver quality results.

The cheapest Liquid Web plan may cost $59 a month (you can reduce that to $29 a month by going annual), for instance, but that gets you 2GB RAM, 40GB storage and a very generous 10TB of bandwidth.

There are lots of configuration options. Instead of just telling you that you're getting CentOS 7, Liquid Web allows you to select CentOS 6, Debian 8, Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04, and often with multiple options of their own: cPanel, Plesk, CloudLinux and more.

This is a managed product, too. Liquid Web fully supports the base operating system, and the support team will proactively restore failed services as soon as they're detected. Getting a managed VPS with other providers could cost you an extra $30 a month, or more.

If your VPS still has issues, there's speedy 24x7x365 support from knowledgeable professionals who will do their best to solve your problems at speed.

Liquid Web may not have the most appealing headline prices, but it's still cheaper than many others considering the features you get, and the excellent support will help keep your site running smoothly down the line.

Dyson's new smart lamp could light your way for 60 years

Posted: 28 Jan 2020 09:00 AM PST

Dyson has revealed its latest smart light, which uses your age and calculates local daylight to preserve your eyes – and it could last up to 60 years, according to the company.

Building on the success of the original Dyson Lightcycle, the new Dyson Lightcycle Morph, "intelligently adjusts the light it emits depending on the user’s task, age and local daylight," all of which can be personalized via the Dyson Link app.

With the ability to rotate 360 degrees, the new smart light can be used as an indirect light to bounce light off your walls, floors, and ceilings, a task light to focus on intricate tasks, and a feature light to highlight your decor.

The stem can also emit a soft orange glow, which means you can use the Lightcycle Morph as an ambient light when you wind down in the evening.

Long live the light

According to Dyson, the Lightcycle Morph could last you decades, thanks to company's heat pipe technology, which "draws heat away from the LEDs to provide a non-stop, energy-free cooling cycle, maintaining light quality for 60 years with light quality not diminishing over time."

That 60-year lifespan is based an estimation of eight hours of use per day, although Dyson notes that "real-life results may vary".

Chief engineer, Jake Dyson explains that, “when trying to recreate the characteristics of daylight, light quality is vital. So we developed a way to protect it for the long term.”

As well as looking good, high quality light could be a good way to stave off tired eyes when you're focussing on intricate tasks like writing, sewing, or DIY projects.

Dyson claims that the LightCycle Morph produces a "uniform distribution of high quality, powerful light, while achieving a low flicker score at full brightness". According to the brand,"low light, flicker and glare can cause eye strain and visual fatigue".

The light is also well-suited for tasks like painting and makeup application, thanks to a Precision mode, which displays colors "very close to daylight". Thanks to a built-in ambient light sensor, the light output levels are adjusted automatically if the lamp detects a sudden change in the background light – this should keep your space at a constant brightness level, ideal if you're trying to concentrate on a tricky task.

Dyson Lightcyle Morph

You can also adjust the Lightcycle Morph based on your age; Dyson says that a 65-year old "needs up to four times more light than a 20-year old", and entering your age into the Dyson Link app will brighten the lamp accordingly.

You'll find a number of preset modes within the app, including Study, Relax, Precision, Boost, Wake-up, Sleep, and Away, while a manual control lets you dim and adjust the color temperature of the light by sliding your finger up and down.

The Away setting is particularly interesting; this mode forces the light to switch on and off at set times to imitate human presence, which means you can use it as a security light to deter would-be intruders when you're away from home.

Want to make your own presets? It’s possible to pre-program and assign names for up to 20 different settings, so you can really customize the light to your specific needs.

Other mod-cons include a USB-C charger for topping up your phone, and an infrared movement sensor that switches the light on when someone is near, and off when no movement has been detected for five minutes, helping to save energy.

Like its predecessor, the Dyson Lightcycle, the new Lightcyle Morph costs £499.99 for the desk-sized version, and £649.99 for the floor-standing lamp. That's no small price to pay for a smart light, but if it does last you 60 years, it could be a worthwhile investment.
