They deliver excellent quality, but leave us with limited options and are invariably expensive. That's about to change, though, as Funai has just shown off Phillips-branded OLED TVs at CES 2020. In particular, Funai showed off OLED TVs from the Philips OLED 804 series. So, what's exciting about that? For one, these are five-star TVs in our book. That's not unusual from Philips OLED TVs either, as a quick look back shows the Philips OLED 803 and Philips OLED+984 scoring perfect marks in our reviews. What's on offerThe Philips OLED 804 series include the latest OLED panels from Funai. On top of the already excellent contrast ratios offered by OLED display technology and the sharp 4K resolution, these TVs offer plenty of HDR options with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+ formats. They also include Dolby Atmos audio decoding, and run on Android TV for immediate access to your favorite streaming services. The TVs include the 3rd-generation P5 processor, which does an excellent job up upscaling standard HD content to appear higher-resolution. It also offers a compelling HDR tweak to SDR content. They also have a unique feature on offer that sets them apart from the pack. Philips Ambilight shines colorful lights from the back of your TV that match some of the colors present on the display. That feature might not be for everyone, but the colorful ambient lighting it provides behind your TV can affect the viewing experience positively in our experience, and can even help your eyes out when watching bright content in a dark environment. This is all good news for shoppers in the market for OLED TVs, as Philips and Funai are behind some truly great options that will give you more to choose from than just LG and Sony. However, Philips' OLED TVs still fall into the $1,000+ ballpark. Fortunately, cheaper OLED options may also be coming this year, too. OLED TVs from Vizio are coming and OLED might get competition from TCL 6-Series Mini-LED TVs.

There are a couple of ways to use Balabolka's free text to speech software: you can either copy and paste text into the program, or you can open a number of supported file formats (including DOC, PDF, and HTML) in the program directly. In terms of output, you can use SAPI 4 complete with eight different voices to choose from, SAPI 5 with two, or the Microsoft Speech Platform. Whichever route you choose, you can adjust the speech, pitch and volume of playback to create a custom voice. Natural Reader is a free text to speech tool that can be used in a couple of ways. The first option is to load documents into its library and have them read aloud from there. This is a neat way to manage multiple files, and the number of supported file types is impressive, including ebook formats. There's also OCR, which enables you to load up a photo or scan of text, and have it read to you. The second option takes the form of a floating toolbar. In this mode, you can highlight text in any application and use the toolbar controls to start and customize text to speech. This means you can very easily use the feature in your web browser, word processor and a range of other programs. There's also a built-in browser to convert web content to speech more easily.
As the name suggests, Panopreter Basic delivers free text to speech conversion without frills. It accepts plain and rich text files, web pages and Microsoft Word documents as input, and exports the resulting sound in both WAV and MP3 format (the two files are saved in the same location, with the same name). The default settings work well for quick tasks, but spend a little time exploring Panopreter Basic's Settings menu and you'll find options to change the language, destination of saved audio files, and set custom interface colors. The software can even play a piece of music once it's finished reading – a nice touch you won't find in other free text-to-speech software. If you need something more advanced, a premium version of Panopreter is available for US$29.95 (about £20, AU$40). This edition offers several additional features including toolbars for Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer, the ability to highlight the section of text currently being read, and extra voices.
Developed by the University of Edinburgh, WordTalk is a toolbar add-on for Word that brings customizable text to speech to Microsoft Word. It works with all editions of Word and is accessible via the toolbar or ribbon, depending on which version you're using. The toolbar itself is certainly not the most attractive you'll ever see, appearing to have been designed by a child. Nor are all of the buttons' functions very clear, but thankfully there's a help file on hand to help. There's no getting away from the fact that WordTalk is fairly basic, but it does support SAPI 4 and SAPI 5 voices, and these can be tweaked to your liking. The ability to just read aloud individual words, sentences or paragraphs is a particularly nice touch. You also have the option of saving narrations, and there are a number of keyboard shortcuts that allow for quick and easy access to frequently used options.
Despite its basic looks, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader has more to offer than you might first think. You can open numerous file formats directly in the program, or just copy and paste text. Alternatively, as long as you have the program running and the relevant option enables, Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can read aloud any text you copy to the clipboard – great if you want to convert words from websites to speech – as well as dialog boxes that pop up. Zabaware Text-to-Speech Reader can also convert text files to WAV format. Unfortunately the selection of voices is limited, and the only settings you can customize are volume and speed unless you burrow deep into settings to fiddle with pronunciations. Additional voices are available for a US$25 fee (about £20, AU$30), which seems rather steep, holding it back from a higher place in our list.

| The best free PDF reader 2020: the easiest way to open and edit PDF documents Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:43 PM PST PDFs are everywhere, and for good reason. They can be opened on any operating system and they’re fairly easy to attach to an email or a website. Plus, PDFs have the advantage that they can’t easily be altered beyond what the original creator intended. If you’re just looking to read PDFs, chances are good that you can do it using your favorite web browser. But, if you need to do anything more advanced than that—like sign or edit documents, merge PDFs, or interconvert between document formats—you’re going to need a dedicated PDF reader. There are a ton of free PDF readers out there, which can make it hard to figure out which one is worth your time. To help, we’ll highlight five of the best free PDF readers for Windows and Mac.
Adobe’s free PDF reader isn’t the most lightweight download, but this software does a lot of things well. If you already use other Adobe products, you can connect Acrobat Reader DC to Adobe’s storage cloud. Alternatively, you can save PDFs to or open them from cloud services including Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and Box. What really sets this free PDF reader apart is that it can handle opening multiple large files at once. That means you can read through and annotate thick documents in this program without worrying that it will crash on you. The layout arranges individual documents in a tab view, so it feels a lot like the experience you’d get looking through PDFs in your web browser. Acrobat Reader DC includes just about all the annotation tools you could want from a free PDF software. It allows you to highlight text, add comments, and fill and sign forms. There’s even a text-to-speech mode that will read documents out loud for you.
Foxit Reader is more than just a free PDF reader – you can also create PDFs from scratch using this software. Integration with Microsoft Office allows you to easily turn documents you’re working on into PDFs. Or, you can scan a document or image and turn it into a PDF using Foxit Reader. The only thing that’s lacking in the free version is support for optical character recognition in scanned documents. The software can be a little intimidating at first, but it’s relatively straightforward to navigate. That’s thanks to the fact that it uses the same ribbon-style menu as Microsoft Office. Tools for editing, signing, highlighting, and commenting are fairly easy to access. You can also merge or split PDFs by downloading free add-ons for the software. Another advantage to Foxit Reader is that it offers security. There’s a Safe Reading mode that allows you to automatically disable Javascript embedded in downloaded PDFs. Slim PDF is an incredibly lightweight free PDF reader. The software is just 1.43 MB in size, so it’s the perfect choice if you’re limited by hard drive space. Plus, that means that it’s able to open and load your documents faster than most of its competitors. The downside to this small size is that Slim PDF is pretty basic. You can search and rotate documents, but that’s about it. There are no tools for signing, filling, commenting, or highlighting, let alone multiple reading modes. While there is a menu option to convert a PDF to a Word document, doing this requires another software download. As a result, Slim PDF is truly just a PDF reader. It does a good job at this, though, leaving out the toolbars that can distract you from what you’re reading. Nitro Reader is another powerful free PDF reader in the vein of Foxit Reader and Adobe Acrobat DC. What makes this tool different is that it has a touchscreen mode that’s perfect if you’re working on a tablet. Touchscreen mode is especially nice for reading e-books, since you can flick the pages rather than scroll or click on a button. While you can’t fill and sign PDFs with Nitro Reader, the software does a nice job of enabling collaboration. You can annotate documents with underlining and strikethroughs in addition to highlighting. Comments are also supported, and they appear like sticky notes that are easy to spot as you read through a document. Helpfully, the software also allows you to convert between PDF and other document formats. The software has a ribbon-style menu that will be familiar to Microsoft Office users. Expert PDF Reader is a lightweight software that doesn’t skimp on tools. This software allows you to fill and sign documents, as well as includes a handful of pre-designed annotation markups like an “approved” stamp. You can also create sticky note-style comments or even attach additional documents to a PDF. The reader supports email documents, which makes it a good choice for collaboration. However, there are a few potentially important features missing. Expert PDF Reader doesn’t allow you to convert between file types. Nor are there multiple reading modes to add to your security when opening downloaded PDFs. The interface feels eerily similar to Microsoft Word, which will be a good thing for most users. The ribbon-style menu is fairly easy to navigate, and you can hide it when you simply want to read a document without distraction.

| Samsung Ballie is a cute rolling robo-pal that narcs on your messy dog Posted: 07 Jan 2020 12:11 PM PST Samsung doesn’t have too many new consumer-ready products to show off at CES 2020 - instead, it’s outlining a more connected and experience-driven future for its device lineup. One new device that could be a key part of that goal? Ballie, the rolling assistant robot that ties the whole house together. Well, for now Ballie’s just a concept, with no release plans or price, but it fits in with Samsung’s forecasts for future tech by being, well, more human. At the CES 2020 Samsung keynote, and in booth demos, we got to see Ballie - a literal bright-colored ball with a camera cluster - playfully follow its owner about the house. Unless, of course, the owner bends down and calls the little ‘bot - at which point it comes rolling up into their hand. It’s even more adorable to see in person. This cuteness makes it seem like a signature part of Samsung’s new strategy: smart speakers already perform many of Ballie’s suggested functionality, like taking notes or reminding users of calendar reminders. But in those setups, you’re essentially speaking to the air, the abstract concept of home. Instead, Ballie is a physical node in your network, rolling around at a slow clip that’s familiar and, most importantly, present. It’s easy to keep track of and talk to. And heck, its cuteness makes Ballie harder to ignore.
Tiny physical butlerWhile it’s still a concept - we didn’t see Ballie do everything Samsung claimed it could - the point of the bot is to interface with your existing connected home. If your camera detects a spill, the rolling ‘bot goes to investigate and then sends your robot vacuum over to clean. And then Ballie will use the camera footage to tell you who caused the mess. Yes, Ballie would narc on your messy dog. This makes Ballie feel a bit like a personal butler - a cute, subservient companion rolling through the house to check that everything’s in order. Combine that with the Bot Chef shown off in Samsung’s booth that cooks with you, and the smart fridge that tells you what you what meals you can make with ingredients on hand, and the physically interactive home the company envisions is warm and active - “a living organism,” as Samsung SVP Federico Casalegno described it at the Samsung CES 2020 keynote. That’s a lot more present than the cold, sterile smart homes we have today, where users bark orders into the ether. Even the far-flung future of Blade Runner 2049 grappled with the limits of intangible companionship - and even a silly rolling robot looking like a headless BB-8 from Star Wars is more comforting than a hologram.

| This wearable air purifier blows a fresh, expensive draft right onto your face Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:43 AM PST Air pollution is one of the biggest problems in the modern city, but the minds behind US startup Aō Air believe they've found a solution. At CES 2020, the company presented the Atmōs: a personal air filter created for "active urbanites in polluted megacities like Beijing and London". Face masks are already popular in heavily polluted cities like Shanghai and Beijing, but they're not terribly effective – particularly once you've been wearing them for a while and they've become damp from your breath.
The Atmōs, which has a distinctly Blade-Runner aesthetic, aims to solve that problem. It's essentially a transparent mask that sits over your nose and mouth, providing a bubble of clean, filtered air for you to breathe. It glows white when everything is working properly, and the light turns red when it's time to change the filters. Fresh and filteredAfter its debut on the show floor, Aō Air released the following fly-though video demonstrating its design: As Engadget explains, the Atmōs draws in air from near your ears, passes it through a series of nano-fiber filters, and uses small fans to creates a pocket of clean air over your face. The pressure means there's no need for a complete seal, so you won't need to worry about ending up with a damp face or a voice like Darth Vader. Adjustable pads at the back keep the device securely in place, and the nose pads can be moved for fit and comfort. Protection from particulates doesn't come cheap though, and the Atmōs is currently available to pre-order for a breathtaking $350 (about £250, AU$500), with the first batch expected to ship in July.

On the face of it, Any Video Converter Free is one of the best YouTube downloaders out there. The only drawback is that the free version of this brilliant program limits you to downloading a single video at a time, but if you're looking for a free solution, this is something you may decide you're happy to put up with. There are lots of video formats to choose from, and there's even a basic video editor built into this YouTube downloader. This can be used to crop a video you download, add simple effects such as colour adjustment, and add overlay text. The whole process is quick and easy. Any Video Converter's interface may not be to everyone's liking, but that's really nitpicking; this is a fantastic free YouTube downloader all other respects. There are no prizes for guessing what Free YouTube Download does. This is a very simple, tightly focused free YouTube downloader that does away with distractions to get the job done well. Paste in a URL from YouTube and you can download the video in just a couple of clicks – or no clicks at all if you enable the Auto Download option. You can download several videos at once if you need to, and you can convert to several different formats on the fly. Just which formats are available to you will depend on the quality of the original video, but AVI, MP4, iPhone/iPod and MKV should be available in most cases. It's also possible to convert to audio-only MP3 if you don’t need the footage as well. There's only one real drawback, but it's a biggie – you can only use Free YouTube Download to grab clips that are less than three minutes long. First, however, a word of warning: sneaky adware abounds during the installation. | iPhone SE 2 release date, news, price and leaks Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:23 AM PST The iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max may have launched September 10, 2019, but Apple couldn't bring itself to put out an iPhone SE 2 to land alongside them. The iPhone SE 2 is one of tech's 'will it, won't it' stories, as rumors have alternated between saying it definitely does, then definitely doesn't, exist, and currently the meter points to it possibly being alive, but probably not landing until 2020. Following the iPhone 11's launch event, that 2020 date seems more likely than ever. The iPhone SE 2 would be a 'true' budget alternative to the high-end iPhones, more so than the iPhone XR was, with downgraded specs from other devices but with a much lower price tag too. But perhaps we're just going to have to come to terms with the fact it's just not going to happen - or at least not for a while. That said, there are some hints that a new SE model could be on the way, as you'll see below. Latest rumor: Multiple sources now suggest the iPhone SE 2 will have an iPhone 8-like design, one rear camera, and a 4.7-inch LCD screen.
iPhone SE 2 release dateThe iPhone SE 2, if it ever launches, has current rumors pointing to either a launch in the first quarter of 2020, or a more vague early 2020 unveiling. While we would take this with a pinch of salt for now, not least because we haven’t heard much about an iPhone SE 2 recently, it would make sense for Apple to launch one in the first half of 2020. Apple has been losing market share recently and that’s likely in part because of the prohibitively high price of most of its phones. By launching an iPhone SE 2 the company would give buyers a more affordable option, and by launching it around six months after the iPhone 11 range it should arrive just as sales are starting to slow. iPhone SE 2 priceIn terms of pricing, if we do see an iPhone SE 2 launch, it will likely remain Apple's most affordable iPhone. The first iPhone SE 2 price rumor pointed to roughly $450 (which will likely translate to £450, AU$700 given how Apple prices its products worldwide), which seems believable. However a more recent iPhone SE 2 price leak suggests it'll be more affordable than that, at $399 (probably £399, AU$600 given Apple pricing conventions). That's from a noted Apple Analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, which lends credence to the rumor. He also recently reiterated the claim, suggesting that nothing has changed. The original iPhone SE launched at $399 (£379, AU$679) for the 16GB variant. We'd expect the iPhone SE 2 to cost at least as much, and a price rise is likely, but it should still be cheap relative to the rest of Apple's range, undercutting even the $799 / £799 / AU$1299 iPhone 11.
The iPhone SE 2 could boast a brand new look iPhone SE 2 designIn terms of how the new iPhone is going to look, well - we've got three theories rolling around, and are are possible. The latest leaks point to probably the most likely option, which is that the iPhone SE 2 will look a lot like the iPhone 8, complete with a 4.7-inch LCD screen and one rear camera. It's a claim we've heard multiple times, and for a while they weren't any renders of how this would look; then we got a render leaked, and it was exactly what we expected. Another theory is that the new smaller iPhone will have an iPhone X-like screen, complete with notch at the top:
If the iPhone SE 2 does exist, this is how it may look ...but that was before Apple's 2018 phones were announced, and with the iPhone XR taking that style for its own, it appears that the rumor mill has crossed its wires and been sharing information on the now-real handset, as opposed to the still-theoretical SE 2. The rear of the phone was said to pack the same dual cameras as the iPhone X, with a video of a purportedly leaked of the new iPhone SE 2. We'll leave it here for your pleasure, but the above notes mean its validity is now truly called into question: BGR was also sent some sketches of the phone in this configuration from a 'reliable source', so it's got some grains of truth in there, with the notch at the top, no home button and no headphone port (the latter a regular rumor). A new screen protector has also been shown off by regular leaker Sonny Dickson, which also shows off a notch at the top for a smaller phone.

In this form, the iPhone SE 2 is more of an 'iPhone X Mini'. Dual cameras and the new screen would mean it would cost a lot more, which is against the point of the iPhone SE range, for people that want a smaller, cheaper iPhone. It all adds up to the rumors being sourced at the iPhone XR development center. That said, we wouldn't completely rule out Apple following its current design style for an iPhone SE 2, especially as this would allow it to fit a larger screen in a smaller body, due to lack of bezels. We also have the image below, which shows a design a lot like the original iPhone SE and with the headphone port intact. Could this be closer to any perhaps-planned iPhone SE 2 design?

(credit: Weibo) It's a design that another leak seems to echo, adding that the iPhone SE 2 will have a glass back and support wireless charging, so with three distinct designs doing the rounds we're not sure what's accurate at this point. Whatever the design, we do have some idea of the colors though, with Ming-Chi Kuo (a respected Apple analyst) saying to expect Silver, Red and Space Grey shades. More iPhone SE 2 rumors, news and leaksThe latest report suggests the iPhone SE 2 could have a 4.7-inch LCD screen. But other than that it will apparently use many of the same components as the iPhone 11 range. So by the sounds of things you can expect flagship power in a smaller size and at a lower price. That's a claim that we've now heard twice, with respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo saying to expect an A13 chipset (the same as the iPhone 11 range), 64GB of storage and 3GB of RAM, but an iPhone 8-like design, meaning probably a 4.7-inch screen. Kuo has since reiterated these claims. In somewhat conflicting but much older (and therefore less likely to be accurate) news, we've heard that the iPhone SE 2 could have a quad-core A10 chipset, 2GB of RAM, a 12MP rear camera, a 5MP front-facing one, a 4-inch screen and that it could come in 32GB and 128GB sizes. That would be an upgrade in some areas from the iPhone SE, but not much of one, putting it roughly in line with the iPhone 7, albeit with a smaller screen. What's most confusing about the new phone is this: how would you get into it? Face ID has been rumored to not be available, in order to save money... so if the all-screen version is to be believed, how would you open the phone? With that in mind, the more traditional, static design with the fingerprint scanner seems to have more weight... so let's see what appears. iPhone SE 2: what we want to seeWe’ve come up with a wish list, filled with features that we want to see in the new iPhone SE 2. Some of them are pleas to Apple to not remove key specs, while others dare the company to try something new. A headphone jack
First things first: the iPhone SE has a headphone jack and we'd very much like it if Apple kept things in place for the iPhone SE 2. If Apple doesn't mess with the design of the next iteration, there's little reason to see it removed. However, rumors point to a new look, so fingers are crossed that the 3.5mm headphone jack doesn't get left on the cutting room floor. A better batteryFrom a value perspective, the iPhone SE is high on the charts if you're looking for a phone that will last you through the day. As we discovered in our in-depth battery test, the SE swept the floor of the other popular iPhone models of the time, like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 6. Its prowess at saving power makes sense. The screen is smaller and its boxy design doesn’t force Apple to slim down on the battery in the way that it might for a slimmer, sleeker chassis used with its core iPhone products. While we're short on complaints about the SE's battery performance, it can only get better, right? We'd like to see Apple pushing some boundaries with its next phone with numbers that take it even higher. Improved performance
One of the more impressive things about the SE is that it fits in a similar set of specs found in the iPhone 6S. A punchy palm-sized smartphone that could handle everything that its fancier iPhone brethren could for a more digestible price. That's 2016 power though, and in 2020 we're hoping Apple gives the iPhone SE 2 the latest chipset and a bump in RAM. A refreshed designThere's no arguing that reviving the iPhone 5 design for use with the iPhone SE was a good idea. After all, it's a winning design, first debuted on the iPhone 4, that set Apple far ahead of its competition in terms of build quality. However, there comes a time when even the best design ideas need to be left to the side. And when looking toward the release of the iPhone SE 2, that time is now. We'd love to see something drastically different, all while sticking to the ergonomic four-inch size that SE fans are accustomed to. Of course, if the design changes at all it will probably now take the form of a shrunk-down iPhone XR, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A chanceThat's right, we want Apple to give the iPhone SE 2 a chance. There's still a market out there for people who want an iPhone that sits comfortably in the palm, can be used one-handed without inducing a drop risk, and doesn't take up every square inch of a pocket. The iPhone SE form factor is loved by its fans, and while the iPhone SE 2 won't be a best-seller for Apple it will show that the Cupertino firm is listening to some of its most loyal fans. Debut Video Capture is a new addition to our roundup of free screen recorders, and although its slightly dated design does it few favors, it's an extremely powerful program that can do much more than just capture what's happening on your PC monitor. In addition to basic screen recording (with no time limits or watermarks), Debut Video Capture can also record footage from external devices, including webcams and security cameras. It can even record on a regular schedule, which means it can become the main hub of a home security system. Not too shabby for a program that's totally free for personal use. There are no post-production editing tools, but you can apply filters and add your own captions and watermarks before you begin recording. There's no option for exporting videos directly to YouTube or Facebook, but they can be saved in all the main formats, including MP4, MOV and AVI (to name just three). ShareX is an open source app for capturing still screen grabs and recording videos. There are no watermarks or time limits to worry about, but the interface isn't the most intuitive in the world so you’ll be best off using keyboard shortcuts. For quick reference, you can start a recording by tapping Shift + Print Screen, and stop it again using Ctrl + Shift + Print Screen. You can also use this free screen recorder to save your capture as a GIF rather than a video file, which can be extremely useful for sharing on forums and social media. Not only is ShareX a brilliant free screen recorder, it can also capture an entire scrolling webpage, capture and identify text via OCR, and even capture your screen according to a schedule. Another of its best features is the ability to send your captured grabs and videos straight to a file-sharing or social media site. There’s a vast array of options, which you can check out on the project’s site. Unfortunately, ShareX doesn’t support taking screen grabs or recordings from games running in full-screen mode. | Sonos suing Google for allegedly stealing its multi-room speaker secret sauce Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST Sonos and Google are headed to the courts. Sonos, the innovator in the multi-room speaker tech space, is alleging that Google has ripped off its patented speaker technology, while using its scale to anti-competitively undercut the price of Sonos products. According to a New York Times report, Sonos has filed two lawsuits concerning five patents on wireless speaker design, and is also requesting a sales ban on a wide range of Google products through a case with the International Trade Commission. The conflict stems from a 2013 partnership between Google and Sonos, at which time Sonos claims Google gained access to its patented technology whilst the two companies worked on bringing Google Play Music to Sonos devices. Sonos claims its tech then appeared in Google's Chromecast Audio devices, then Pixel product line-up before finding its way to the low-cost Google Home (now Nest) devices – undercutting Sonos's premium offering.
Amazon next?Sonos states it has repeatedly warned Google against its actions, but has now seen as many as 100 of its patents infringed, covering everything from synchronized audio over discrete wireless speakers to tweaking volume over numerous devices at once. For its part, whereas Sonos aimed for collaboration, Google forced restrictions on Sonos devices – such as making it so as Sonos speakers wouldn't be able to run both the Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa on the speaker at once, something which would have been a key differentiator. That's not to say that the Amazon Echo speaker range hasn't done similar to Sonos' business – in fact, Sonos claims similar violations from Amazon, but doesn't have the resources to be “battling two tech giants in court at once.” For now though, the focus is on Google, with everything from Pixelbooks to Wi-Fi hubs from Google under fire from Sonos's legal teams. | Exclusive: Nuraloops could be the best headphones out - when they actually appear Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST There are a few reasons that being a tech journalist is brilliant – the Nuraloop headphones are the latest and greatest example of one of the main ones, and TechRadar was the first to get to try the new headphones outside of the company itself. The moments where you get pure joy from technology doing something truly different and emotionally engaging are the reasons we do this job, constantly sifting through thousands of press releases and pacing the floor of shows like CES 2020 to find something that we – and you – will want to use. The first iPhone had an element of that, with the multi-touch, capacitive screen making us feel ‘Oh, this is how it’s supposed to feel to interact with a smartphone’; likewise, when we first strapped on the HTC Vive and started moving around, it felt like ‘this is how virtual reality should work’.
The headphones are slightly heavy, but pack power In the case of the Nuraloops, while listening to them wasn’t as game-changing as hearing music in your ears for the first time, I’ve never felt so sure that I was getting close to the best-possible sound quality for my own ears. Because that’s what Nura, the audio company which makes the Nuraloops, promises: a pair of around-the-neck Bluetooth headphones that pump out sound that’s tailored precisely for you. It works based on science first theorised in the 1940s: that the cochlea in your ears emits very tiny sounds based on different audio inputs. It wasn’t until the 1970s that this theory was proven, and Nura is now claiming that it can use this feature of the human ear to offer precisely tailored sound at every frequency – in essence, creating a perfectly-tailored audio experience for every listener.
The fit is better when you fiddle with the wires Dragan Petrovic, CEO of Nura, says that the challenge of perceiving this sound is so huge that it’s only recently that the technology has enabled it. “We often liken measuring that signal to being at the bottom of the mountain, looking at the top and trying to determine if someone has placed a pebble on the top – the signal [we’re trying to hear] is the equivalent of the size of a pebble relative to the mountain.” You might think that this has been done before, but Nura is confident that it’s got patents to offer sound quality like no other brand around, and can harness the response of your inner ear to bring truly customized sound profiles for each listener.
The box packs the additional cables and pouches This isn’t the first time Nura has incorporated this tech into headphones – the Nuraphones are over-the-ear headphones from the same company based on the same customized audio output. In our review we praised, the same kind of sound quality that comes from the personalization – but those larger models cost $399 / £349 / AU$49), which is a heck of a lot of money in the headphones space. To bring the technology to a smaller space, for half the price, is impressive – although it does make you wonder where compromises might have to be made. How much will they cost… if you can get them?The Nuraloop headphones are currently early-bird priced at $199 / £199 / AU$299 (although that will likely change when they finally come to market), and when it comes to the release date… well, that’s a slight issue. They were supposed to ship in September 2019, but that got pushed back to December. That date has since been pushed back again, to March of this year – but Petrovic says the issues that plagued the early design stages have now been solved. “What ended up [causing the delay], wasn’t the high tech measurement of hearing or anything like that… it was the fricking cable,” he says.
He explained that the amount of data flowing between each bud meant they couldn’t be hand-soldered for fear of product failure, and finding an automated solution was causing the issue. Petrovic said the company even experimented with flexible circuit boards, but they weren’t proven to be robust enough to handle multiple bends (which these around-the-head Bluetooth headphones would create). However, he told TechRadar that the early 2020 release date of around January / February was “well within sight”, and the fact that Nura was demoing the Nuraloops at CES was proof that things are finally ready to go. (Of course, demoing a product at a show doesn’t mean it’s ready to ship, or even that it’ll ever see the light of day. How do they sound?
The magnetic connector Taking the Nuraloops out of the box, and they feel pretty similar to many other headphones. Actually, it was initially rather disappointing, as they felt rather heavy and cumbersome in the hand, rather than light and set to disappear into our ears. That perceived weakness would quickly turn into a strength. I removed the headphones from the box and placed them around my neck and onto my ears – this action automatically activated them. I fired up the app and was asked to set up a sound profile, which I duly did. The headphones were already making a faint pinging sound at this stage to check the fit – I found the right earbud wasn’t sitting snugly, and the app picked that up (in a similar way to how Apple’s AirPod Pro set-up works) asking me to rotate the bud forward to find the right fit.
The app first checks your fit I still wasn’t feeling like these headphones sat comfortably in the ears, but still – I was massively hopeful for what was coming. From there, it was just a case of sitting quietly – very quietly – and waiting while a series of beeps and boops looped away in my ears. These sounds were testing different frequencies and analysing the responses, and my ‘hearing circle’ began to form. The shape of this circle was created based on my ears’ reactions to the sounds being played, and it quickly took on a distinctive shape. When I was finished, I could listen to music either in ‘normal’ mode, or with the unique sound profile added – and the difference was pretty stark.
One has to sit quietly for a couple of minutes while your profile is created I was then given the chance to try others’ sound profiles through the Nuraloop headphones, and that’s where the technology really shone. The best way I can describe it is like coming up for air – all the audio parts of my ear started to come alive and I could hear far more sound than usual. Each bud on the Nuraloop headphones is touch-sensitive, allowing you to tap to pause music, activate the sound passthrough (so you can hear the outside world better) or use the touch-sensitive dial to change volume or alter the amount of sound coming into the headphones from outside. The latter didn’t feel particularly useful and wasn’t always perfect under the touch – we found ourselves just tapping the passthrough on and off when someone was talking to us.
The noise cancellation is excellent - social mode is helpful too This was necessary though, because the noise cancellation was truly excellent. Traditional active noise cancellation is usually just good at blocking out background noise, but it’s then impossible to hear any words being spoken to you when it’s turned on. Back to the sound profile though, and one thing that’s always bothered me is the thought that ‘tailored sound’ might not actually be tailored at all – that it’s just loosely based on your ability to hear bass better, and turning on the right EQ setting (or even just raising the volume of the music slightly) makes you feel that you’re hearing ‘better’ sound.
You can select the level of bass yourself With the Nuraloops, however, it’s hard to argue that things aren’t tailored to your own hearing. Trying out the sound profiles of other users yielded a noticeably different sound in the ears – either it was too tinny, or the vocals were too muddied to hear the sound properly, and switching back to our sound profile was far better. Listening to a range of music showed that the Nuraloop headphones could handle everything with aplomb – and the key feeling it left us with was that we wanted to take them out into the real world to see how well they worked. You can set the level of bass you enjoy at the start of the sound profile set-up process, but that doesn’t seem to interfere with the high end – EDM sounded crisp and clear without being overly tinny, and that was with a stronger focus on bass to see how the Nuraloops managed.
Gareth doesn't know we're adding this picture of him in, with his mouth slightly gawping The active noise cancellation is also a tremendous feature, but only when the headphones are snug – I found that the right-hand bud slipped a little, but some manipulation of the malleable wire around the ear held them in place far better and kept the seal tight. However, trying to wear the Nuraloops day-to-day when in the real world is key – would we use the sound passthrough on a more subtle level, or only use it fully open to hear a conversation? It’s a top feature on the AirPods Pro, and we’re keen to try it here. Nura is even pushing these headphones as great for active sport, so when going running they should stay snugly in the ears. We’re not really sold on that – their weight suggests they might be more mobile, and the earbuds are rather flat, but there’s a lot of confidence from the brand that you should be able to bounce around without losing connection to your audio.
Nura says it's looking into possibly adding custom fits in the future There’s also another feature that should please a lot of Bluetooth headphone users: an analogue cable that clips magnetically to the rear of the headset, allowing you to plug into a DAC (for musicians) or the entertainment system on a plane (if you’re everyone else, and have felt the frustration of not being able to use your own headphones when on a long-haul flight). In short, our time with the Nuraloop headphones left us enthused. The price reduction from the Nuraphones doesn’t seem, in our early testing, to have diminished the sound quality too greatly, despite the miniaturization of so many components. The delays in bringing them to market are worrying though, and it’s up to Petrovic and Nura to prove that these headphones are more than vaporware – with the promise of so much, but the reality being constant delays in order to ‘get them right’. However, if they do appear early this year, as promised, then the Nuraloops could be some of the best headphones out there – a set of Bluetooth wireless earbuds that can handle anything most users can throw at them, and with sound that’s tailored truly to you.

| New iPhone SE 2 leaked renders show... basically an iPhone 8 Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:53 AM PST We're expecting the iPhone SE 2 to come out this year – a phrase we've been saying for several years now, admittedly – but newly leaked renders give us a really close look at what we could expect from the upcoming budget iPhone. These renders come from prolific leaker @Onleaks, shared with iGeeksBlog, and show a full view of the device from the front and back, plus some other angles. It's worth taking these images with a pinch of salt right off the bat, as they contradict certain other design rumors we've heard (mainly due to the lack of a notch), but they're still worth looking at regardless.
The pictures show a slim phone with rounded edges, a lightning port, no 3.5mm headphone jack, and a chunky bezel and chin on the front in lieu of a notch. This probably rings a bell with people who owned an iPhone 8, because it looks basically the same. That makes sense given some rumors suggest the iPhone SE 2 is actually called the iPhone 9, but the iPhone 8 is currently still available to buy, so there's little reason people would opt for what seems like the same device. If this render is accurate, it suggests the real differences between the iPhone SE 2 and iPhone 8 are in the internals, as the former would likely have a newer chipset, better camera and bigger battery, and would probably run iOS 13 from the get-go. This render might not reflect the real product though, as it's different to other renders we've seen. The iPhone SE 2 could look like a budget version of a more modern iPhone, or could stick to the design of the original iPhone SE. This is all speculation based on rumors based on speculation, so we'll have to wait for Apple to finally unveil the new iPhone to find out exactly what it's like. | BMW's vision of the future is a lazy driver's dream come true Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:27 AM PST All the big car makers are using CES 2020 to demonstrate their latest self-driving technology, but BMW is going one step further, introducing controls that are activated using nothing but your gaze, as well as plush loungers for you to relax in while the car does the work. Last year, we got to experience BMW's Natural Interaction – an interface that lets you control features like the car's sunroof and windows with simple hand gestures, and demand information about your surroundings by pointing at locations through the windows. It worked well (though all the pointing felt a little rude).
The company has now taken this idea a step further, eliminating the need to even raise a finger. The new interface uses gaze-tracking to determine where you're looking and provide context for voice instructions. For example, it can tell whether you're looking at another passenger in the car, a restaurant outside, or part of the car's interior. The aim is to make interacting with the vehicle feel more natural, and like speaking to a person rather than a machine. Lie back and relaxAt CES, BMW demonstrated this new interface in a special concept cabin called BMW i Interaction EASE. This concept only focuses on the car's interior (the exterior is very abstract) and shows just how cushy driving could be once everyone is a passenger. Each regular seat has been replaced with a ZeroG Lounger, which can be tilted back by up to 60 degrees while still keeping you safe in the event of an accident.
An overhead view of the BMW i Interaction EASE concept cabin It looks like the stuff of science fiction (or possibly a particularly luxurious dental surgery), but BMW has already fitted three BMW X7 models with the new seats, and the company says they will be ready for production vehicles in a few years. BMW also brought 20 cars featuring the BMW i3 Urban Suite to Las Vegas for CES to give visitors a taste of luxury. These are regular production BMW i3 cars that have been completely refitted "to recreate the ambience of a boutique hotel". Everything except the driver's seat and dashboard in each car has been replaced "to create an inviting space with a high feel-good factor in which to spend time – the perfect place for relaxing, enjoying in-car entertainment or focusing on work in a laid-back setting". These cars aren't actually autonomous (BMW has employed chauffeurs to take them around Vegas) but the effect is pretty much the same. Just don't expect the driver to know what you mean when you start talking to the sunroof.

| TCL 6-Series TVs could bring OLED quality to budget buyers thanks to Mini-LED Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:24 AM PST TCL kicked off CES 2020 by announcing an update to its 8-Series screens with new-and-improved Vidrian Mini-LED technology. But what TCL didn’t mention is that the same technology is coming to its well-loved and ultra-popular 6-Series as well. We caught a glimpse of the new screens at TCL’s CES 2020 booth where the new 6-Series TVs could be found, hidden in plain sight. While past iterations of the 6-Series have offered Full-Array backlights and, most recently Quantum Dots to enhance color saturation, the inclusion of Mini-LED would massively boost black levels and overall contrast by increasing the number of contrast control zones to well over 1,000. Unlike OLED that tops out around 700 nits of peak brightness, these new Mini-LED TVs would offer a peak brightness of above 1,000 nits - making them an even better option for watching HDR content and better suited for daytime viewing than an OLED TV. The TCL 6-Series QLED with Mini-LED While no one at TCL’s booth could tell us the final price for the upcoming 6-Series, multiple employees cited how important the price of the range is to the company, and even pointed to a downward trend in pricing for the 6-Series in the last few years. That's far from a promise, but if the new 6-Series is cheaper than its predecessors and featured Mini-LED technology that would be pretty impressive, especially considering how expensive the few Mini-LED TVs on the market (TCL’s own 8-Series included) have been. (For reference, last year’s 8-Series launched at $1,999 for the 65-inch version and extended up to $2,999 for the 75-inch version.) If TCL can keep costs lower than LG’s OLED and offer similar performance, the new 6-Series could be the best mid-range TV to buy in 2020. Meet the new TCL 5-Series QLED TVOn top of a Mini-LED-powered 6-Series, we also saw a new 5-Series QLED TV on the show floor, too. Last year the 5-Series was upgraded to support Dolby Vision but this year's upgrade to QLED will make it much more colorful and vibrant. We'll try to get time with TCL's entire lineup this week at the show, but for now, these TVs could put some serious pressure on Samsung, Sony and LG.
