Posted: 23 Feb 2020 02:42 PM PST

With Dante's identity being revealed, and the war between The Survivors and The Whisperers in full swing, it's safe to say that the first part of season 10 left us with an immense cliff-hanger.

And now it's time for the much await second part - so keep reading as we tell you how to watch The Walking Dead online - no matter where on Earth you are.

The first part of the apocalypse has brought fresh new battles and challenges for the remainder of humanity. Whilst the mid-finale brought plenty of suspense and in true Walking Dead fashion, a very intense cliff-hanger, thanks to Alpha's mind games with the Survivors.

We've got too many questions that need answering, so if you're ready for the next part of the massacre keep reading as we tell you how to watch The Walking Dead online and on TV.

And if you can't get access to the show on a TV in your country, then your best bet could be online using a VPN. Find out more below.

Watch The Walking Dead online from anywhere in the world:

If you're away from home, out of the country, you can still get your undead fix. This is possible using a VPN to get around the usual geo restrictions - so you can live stream The Walking Dead at the exact same time that it broadcasts in the US.

Which VPN is best for you? Our fave is ExpressVPN. And how do you use that to watch The Walking Dead online? Read on to find out all you need to know.

How to watch the The Walking Dead in the US:

To watch the second part of The Walking Dead season 10 in the US you can do it most easily with access to AMC itself which will air the show at 9pm ET/8pm C/6pm PT on Sundays.

However if you don't have cable, you can access AMC shows with an internet connection and a paid for service like DirectTV Now, Sling TV or PlayStation Vue. You can also watch all The Walking Dead Season 10 on Amazon Video, Apple iTunes, FandangoNOW and VUDU. Which means you can watch it on your laptop, smartphone, smartTV or tablet.

The great news is that you can get free trials with some of these servers so if you want to try before you buy, that's an option too.

Not in the US this Sunday? Then don't feel like you need to miss out. Head back up to our instructions for how to watch via a VPN above, and then you can watch through your preferred online method above.

How to watch The Walking Dead in the UK:

The second part of The Walking Dead season 10 will premiere on Fox TV on Monday, February 24 at 9pm GMT. Fox TV is a paid for channel that is included on some Sky, Virgin Media, and TalkTalk packages.

Beyond that you can also access the channel using a less commitment based service like Now TV. This lets you pay for a bundle for a period of time so you don't need to commit. For this you can opt for the Entertainment bundle for £8.99 per month which can be cancelled month to month and includes a one week FREE trial.

Not in the UK to watch? It's OK, you don't have to set it to record or rely on catching up - get your zombie fix by downloading a VPN and watching from wherever you are as described above.

Where can I watch old episodes of The Walking Dead?

It's never too late to start watching The Walking Dead with its nine seasons already completed and crammed full of excitement that never gets old. There are lots of ways to catch up:

US: You've got plenty of option so take you're pick! Here's a handy list of some of the most popular ones we've found: Amazon Video, iTunes, Fandango Now and Vue. All of these streaming services have all 10 seasons of The Walking Dead.

UK: Now TV has every single Walking Dead episode ever made on its service, although you'd have to do A LOT of binge watching if you want to fit them all in to a single month's Entertainment Pass. However if you're an Amazon Prime customer you can just go there to catch up on the first 9 seasons.

Everywhere else: If you've hunted high and low and still can't find anywhere showing the old 132 episodes(!) of The Walking Dead, then it might be worth giving a VPN a try to get access. Then you can potentially grab hold of them from a US or UK source.

GTA IV is making a comeback on Steam, but don’t get excited just yet

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:43 PM PST

Rockstar has had a rocky few months, what with the exit of Dan Houser – whose brainchildren include Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V – and Grand Theft Auto IV being pulled from sale in January. Luckily, the NYC-based publisher is getting back on track.

According to The Verge, GTA IV is finally returning on Steam on March 19, following its weeks-long hiatus.

Last month, Rockstar was forced to pull the game from sale after running out of serial keys and support, which Microsoft was providing up until the demise of its Games for Windows Live platform (may it rest in peace). The good news is that the fictionalized New York City-set game will be available for download once again on Steam.

Except there’s a catch

Don’t plan that LAN/WAN party with your friends just yet. GTA IV may be coming back, but not without some big changes as well as a couple of missing key pieces, including that multiplayer mode that made the game so popular.

According to Rockstar’s announcement on Steam, GTA IV is making its big return as Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, which will effectively be replacing both Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City.

As a result of this massive update, GTA IV will no longer feature its groundbreaking multiplayer mode. Sorry folks, no more Fast and Furious digital reenactments for you and your friends.

That’s not all. GTA IV is also losing its leaderboards, as well as some of its radio stations including RamJam FB, Self-Actualization FM, and Episodes from Liberty City’s Vice City FM. Though this isn’t the first time that GTA IV has lost audio before, and Rockstar did specifically say that those stations will only be temporarily unavailable.

What happens to your GTA IV or Episodes from Liberty City copy

On a more positive note, you won’t have to purchase GTA IV: Complete Editing if you already own either GTA IV or GTA: Episodes from Liberty City.

Rockstar says that those who have either titles downloaded from Steam will be able to update their copy to Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition, while players with physical copies not previously activated should be able to use the key on the back of the game manual to update to GTA IV: Complete Edition.

On the other hand, those who purchased from Windows Live Digital Store and activated either game via Games for Windows Live will need to “create and/or link their Social Club accounts in replacement of Games for Windows Live in order update to Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition.”

In addition, any current game save files will be compatible with GTA IV: Complete Edition. So, you should be able to continue with that current game you’re playing on the new version of the game.

Not a Steam user? GTA IV: Complete Edition will also be available via the Rockstar Games Launcher.

What is Project Luminous, the next big thing in Star Wars?

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:09 PM PST

Star Wars movies might be going away until 2022, but as we know, the franchise never really takes a break now. Project Luminous is a Lucasfilm Publishing-led project that was announced all the way back in April 2019 as part of Star Wars: Celebration. Now, we're very close to learning what it is.

If you're only interested in Star Wars movies and TV shows, this will probably not be worth getting too excited about. Publishing means books and comics, and so far we only know about the involvement of authors and publishers in the project. But in a post-The Rise of Skywalker world, it may give us hints about how Lucasfilm is plotting the future of the series in terms of setting and types of story it wants to tell. Or, maybe it won't.

Below, we've collected everything we know about the Star Wars event Project Luminous, including its reveal date, which writers are involved, and rumors of where in the Star Wars universe it will take us. We'll update this page when we know more.

Project Luminous: what is the new Star Wars project?

Project Luminous is a publishing project set in the Star Wars universe, and has so far been revealed as a collaboration between Disney Lucasfilm Publishing, Marvel Comics, IDW Publishing and Del Rey. It will not involve a movie or a TV show – expect it to be told with books and comics. Announced back in April 2019 at Star Wars: Celebration, it's a project led by Lucasfilm Publishing's Mike Siglain. It was previously known internally as the All-Star Initiative, and it's been in the works since at least summer 2018. Writer Charles Soule described it as a "massive Star Wars event".

In a promotional image released at NYCC 2019, Project Luminous was teased with an edit of Obi-Wan Kenobi quote, "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It’s an energy field, created by all living things...until...Project Luminous, 2020". This suggests the story will be about the changing nature of the Force in some way.

There are no more details about the story right now, but we do know who's writing the various parts of Project Luminous so far, as the image above reveals. Charles Soule (writer of various Star Wars comics for Marvel), Claudia Gray (author of various Star Wars books including Lost Stars), Justina Ireland (author of the book Lando’s Luck), Daniel José Older (Star Wars: Last Shot) and Cavan Scott (writer of IDW comics like Tales from Vader’s Castle) are all working on it.

When will Project Luminous be revealed?

Monday, February 24, which is imminent as you're reading this. Del Rey's Star Wars Books Twiter account teased the reveal above on Friday. The official Star Wars account mentioned a reveal event is happening on Monday night, and to keep an eye on its social channels. According to ABC's Clayton Sandell, details will start being released about Project Luminous at 7PM PT.

Project Luminous is rumored to take place in the High Republic era

This is all rumor, and it's worth treating it as such. A report on Making Star Wars suggests Project Luminous will be set in the High Republic era of the Star Wars universe, which is apparently 400 years before the Skywalker Saga. "For some time, I have heard that Project Luminous was a build up to the next film era which my sources are calling The High Republic era," the piece says.

That could be the new series of theatrical Star Wars movies that begins in December 2022. But, it's still worth keeping expectations in check, because there are no official details about those films right now other than their distant release dates.

The High Republic era has been mentioned a few times in additional Star Wars fiction, including the recent Star Wars comic written by Charles Soule from January 2020. "The galaxy was not as settled as it is now," is how the era was characterized. The Rise of Kylo Ren, also written by Soule, mentioned the High Republic era too.

Where the movies go next is a total mystery, and a lot could happen before 2022. It's worth just taking Project Luminous as its own self-contained project of books and comics for the time being.

Is Project Luminous anything to do with the Star Wars movies?

Like we said, it seems to be a publishing initiative. It's not impossible, though, that whatever Project Luminous is will pave the way or tie-in with the next few Star Wars projects in other media. If it explores a new part of the Star Wars universe – and we could do with a break from the Skywalker Saga timeframe after The Rise of Skywalker – it's possible this could be sowing the seeds of that. For now, though, it's best to keep expectations at a reasonable level until we know what it is.

PS5 vs Nvidia gaming laptops – who will win the battle for gamers' cash?

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 11:34 AM PST

Recently, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang claimed that Nvidia-powered gaming laptops will beat the PS5 and Xbox Series X to be the most popular ‘console’ in the world – a pretty bold claim, but how likely is it?

Even without knowing the specs of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, there’s a good chance that gaming laptops will be able to match the two upcoming consoles when it comes to performance.

Games consoles these days should last around five years before another generation arrives, so even if only the most powerful gaming laptops will be able to compete with the PS5 when it launches at the end of 2020, you can be sure that in five years’ time, the majority of gaming laptops will.

While power isn’t a concern, price certainly is. We don’t know much about the PS5's price at the moment, but it’s a decent bet that it will be under $500/£500. While that’s pretty expensive for a game console, it’s impossibly cheap for a gaming laptop, and I have a feeling that the PS5 will certainly beat gaming laptops at that price for a good while – especially if Sony realizes the PS5’s 8K gaming ambitions.

Sony will be able to keep the cost of the PS5 down by buying components in bulk. That’s the benefit of having a single company behind a hugely popular product. Gaming laptops don’t have that luxury – they are made by loads of different manufacturers. While this has its benefits – primarily more choice for the consumer – it means the cost of building gaming laptops is higher, and that cost is passed on to the customers.

Sony and Microsoft will be vying for the same market, as well, so we could see each company selling their consoles at a loss in a bid to get the upper hand. After all, they can make up the money they lose by taking a cut from the games they sell, as well as their PS Plus and Xbox Live subscription services, again something laptop makers can’t do.

So it’s highly unlikely there will be a gaming laptop that will match the PS5’s price and performance at launch – unless Nvidia starts giving away its GPUs to laptop makers for free. Something I don’t think the company will consider.

Sales figures

But what about sales figures? While I have no idea how many units Sony and Microsoft will sell during the next generation, the PS4 has sold around 106 million units. Meanwhile, Microsoft has been coy about Xbox One figures, and I think it’d be lucky to have sold 50 million.

So, that’s about 160 million in seven years. But what about gaming laptops? That’s harder to track, but a report last year by International Data Corporation (IDC), titled the Worldwide Quarterly Gaming Tracker, forecast that in 2019 there will be 19.4 million shipments of gaming laptops.

Last year was a good year for PC gaming sales, so that might be a higher number the previous years (as gaming laptop and desktop sales were on a downward trend), but if we say on average there are 20 million gaming laptops sold a year – and this is me being generous – then it would take five years to match what Sony sold of the PS4 in seven.

So, if gaming laptops continue to sell as well as they do – and the PS5 sells the same as the PS4, which is unlikely considering how good PS4 sales have been – then Nvidia might not be too far off the mark. Sure, Nvidia was talking only about Nvidia-powered gaming laptops, but even with AMD’s recent renaissance, the vast majority of gaming laptops will still be powered by team green.

Let’s not forget that these are new laptop sales we’re talking about as well. Unlike the PS4 and Xbox One, existing gaming laptops will be forward compatible, meaning they will be able to play games that come to PC in the next five or more years. Sure, they might not play them that well, but you can always tweak the settings (unlike on games consoles) to get a playable experience.

GeForce Now

Plus, there's also Nvidia GeForce Now, the game streaming service that has the potential to turn any laptop with an internet connection into a gaming laptop. With the news that Cyberpunk 2077 is launching on GeForce Now, there’s a good chance your battered old laptop could play CD Projekt Red’s graphically-demanding game better than the original PS4 and Xbox One consoles – internet connection permitting, of course.

All of this boosts the gaming laptop population even further. Looking at pure sales numbers, there’s actually a very good chance that Nvidia gaming laptops will sell more than the PS5 during its lifetime. If you think of gaming laptops as a whole as a gaming console, then sure, it could be the most popular gaming console in the world.

What makes a console a console?

But is it fair to call a gaming laptop a game console? I don’t think so. In fact, it does a disservice to both gaming laptops and game consoles.

The best gaming laptops offer so much more than just gaming. You can use them for work – thanks to their powerful GPUs, gaming laptops can make excellent workstations for 3D artists, for example. They are always going to be much more versatile than a games console.

Meanwhile, the beauty of a games console is its affordability and simplicity. If you buy a PS5, you should be confident that even in five years’ time, it’ll still play PS5 games. You won’t have to nervously check out the minimum specifications of a game to see if your device will run it.

And, while games consoles are taking some bad habits from gaming PCs and laptops, such as introducing mandatory updates and day-one patches, you won’t have to deal with a crappy Windows 10 update – something gaming laptop owners are plagued by.

So, is Nvidia right to say that gaming laptops will be the most popular consoles? Surprisingly, in a way it is. But also, in many other ways it’s not.

But that’s not really important. What is important is that with the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, modern games will no longer be held back by the seven-year-old tech in the PS4 and Xbox One. This will lead to more immersive and ambitious games in the future – and that’s something that PC gamers will be able to benefit from as well.

First Look: Klipsch The Fives are slick bookshelf speaker alternatives to a soundbar

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 06:05 AM PST

Let’s face it – unless you’ve got a recent, souped-up, top of the line Philips or Panasonic OLED TV, each with a fancy built in audio system, the sound quality from your television is probably going to be a bit lacking. If you don’t fancy forking out for a surround sound system, the answer is usually to invest in a soundbar to boost your set’s audio credentials.

But Klipsch, with its soon-to-be-released The Fives speakers, is looking to offer an alternative. Rather than popping a soundbar in front of your TV, what if instead you had a pair of active speakers either side of it? And what if they were equipped with a HDMI-ARC connection, specifically designed for making the most out of whatever you’re watching on TV.

Left and right

Offering genuine stereo separation and the promise of being able to control them using just your TV remote thanks to that HDMI-Arc connection, the Klipsch could be the versatile, relatively-subtle-looking lift your TV’s audio needed.

Though the point of TV-focussed separates may not seem immediately obvious, there’s lots to like about the Klipsch The Fives. With wooden cabinets set to be offered in matte black or woodgrain effects, and with a choice of fabric or metallic front plates, the speakers are built with good looking interiors in mind.

Of course, that’s all pointless without some decent innards to pair them with, and the Klipsch The Fives squeeze in a beefy woofer and 1-inch tweeters – which should be enough to carry vocals cleanly as well as some rumbling bass from tunes or movie soundtracks.

Weep for Wi-Fi?

Physical dials on the top let you control volume and jump between TV HDMI, Bluetooth, optical, USB, 3.5mm analog and phono source inputs. That last one is particularly interesting – unlike a soundbar, you can match these speakers with a turntable without the need for a separate phono preamp.

It’s a level of versatility that your average sounder set-up just won’t offer. What is sadly missing however is Wi-Fi, so be prepared to keep your phone’s Bluetooth connection handy, or to have all your audio apps installed on your smart TV's platform.

Pricing and availability are still being finalised, but the Klipsch The Fives should be on sale by Q2 2020, with a price point south of $800.

Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray live stream: how to watch the Intercontinental Derby 2019-20 from anywhere

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:25 AM PST

Turkey's latest Intercontinental Derby is upon us, with Fenerbahce set to go head-to-head against bitter rivals Galatasaray in Istanbul today - and we're here to tell you all the easiest ways to watch a Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray live stream, no matter where you happen to be.

The Turkish Super Lig match is called the Intercontinental Derby because the two sides sit on opposite sides of the Bosporus river, so Galatasaray is technically in Europe and Fenerbahce is in Asia - hence the idea that they span two continents. It's also known as the Eternal Rivalry and dates back more than 110 years, with Galatasaray beating Fenerbahce by a 2-0 score in their first ever encounter all the back in 1909, when Turkey was still part of the Ottoman Empire.

Over the years, the two clubs have become the most successful - and best supported - in Turkish football history, so it's as openly hostile as football rivalries get. Take last year's encounter as an example, which saw an assistant referee hit by a flare.

This match is made all the more exciting by the fact that both teams are still in the race for the Turkish domestic title. While Trabzonspor currently - and perhaps surprisingly - sit atop the Super Lig table on 44 points, Galatasaray aren't far behind in third place with 42 points, while Fenerbahce could still absolutely pull it out of the bag and have 38 points to their name.

Make sure you know how to watch every second of the Intercontinental Derby 2020 action by following our Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray live stream guide.

Fenerbahce vs Galatasary H2H: how the two rivals compare

The Fenerbahce vs Galatasaray rivalry transcends just football, with both clubs also competing in basketball, volleyball and even rowing. But there's no doubt that football is the big one and Fenerbahce currently have a better overall record than their rivals in Intercontinental Derby games - though Galatasaray has won 22 matches compared to Fenerbahce's 19 victories the newer Super Lig competition.

As such, Galatasaray may boast ultimate bragging rights, as they've also won both the 2000 UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup final - the only Turkish side ever to have done so. Overall, Fenerbahce have won the Turkish championship the most times overall, boasting 28 title in total, while Galatasaray have one just 23 - though 22 of these are in the current Super Lig incarnation of the domestic competition. Galatasary also won the Turkish Cup 18 times, while Fenerbahce have won it 6 times to date

Six Nations 2020 live stream: how to watch every rugby union game online from anywhere

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:09 AM PST

It's all still to play for as the 2020 Six Nations enters its third round of matches. To ensure you don't miss any more of the action, here's how to get a Six Nations live stream in 2020, no matter where you are.

So far, England have been shocked by the French in Paris before rebounding against Scotland, while champions Wales lost to Ireland on the second weekend having already dominated Italy. That means Ireland currently share the Six Nations lead with France on 9 points, followed by Wales and England with 5 points each.

Adding to an air of uncertainty around the tournament, four of the six teams have new coaches since the 2019 instalment of tournament, with only England's Eddie Jones and Scotland’s Gregor Townsend still in place this time out.

In particular, with France set to host the World Cup in 2023, all eyes are on the nation's new coach, Fabien Galthie, and the youthful squad he'll be looking to blood in the run up to that tournament. The early signs are certainly promising, after the French defeated Eddie Jones' England by a score of 24-17.

Elsewhere, Ireland have a familiar face looking on from the stands as coach, with former assistant Andy Farrell replacing Joe Schmidt in the hot seat. Scottish hopes will be resting on the shoulder's of talisman Finn Russell, however the stand-off's breach of discipline which saw him unceremoniously sent home during his teams preparation for their opening tie against Ireland has placed his involvement in the tournament in doubt.

For all the info about how to watch a Six Nations live stream, read on. And you can scroll down to see a list of all of this weekend's fixtures, too.

If you're outside your country of residence - whether that be the UK or anywhere else - and try to start streaming the rugby via your native broadcaster, you'll soon discover that you can't as it is location restricted. But there's a way you can watch anyway. By downloading and installing a VPN, you can effectively trick your computer into thinking that it's back at home. What is the format of the Six Nations?

Taking place each year from the beginning of February and concluding by the end of March, the tournament is contested by the international sides of France, England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales.

Each Six Nations team plays the other five once per season with home advantage in alternate seasons, giving a total of 15 matches per Championship. A win earns that team four points, while a draw earns both teams two points.  A losing side receives no points, however a bonus point can be picked up by a team regardless if they won, lost or drew if they score four or more tries in a game. Losing sides can also still pick up two bonus points if they score four tries or more in the process and lose by a margin of seven points or fewer.

The team with the most points at the season wins the Six Nations Championship Trophy. If the winning team has defeated all five other Unions, it is given the title ‘Grand Slam Winner’.

Who are the favourites for the 2020 Six Nations?

Beaten World Cup finalists England started the Six Nations as favourites with most bookies, but now France and Ireland must be the more fancied sides.

What happened in the 2019 Six Nations?

Regarded as outsiders at the beginning of the tournament, Wales clinched their first grand slam in seven years, with a clean sweep of victories against their five opponents.

Who has won the most Six Nations championships?

England lead the pack with six championship wins, their last in 2017. Wales and France are both close behind on five.

UK drone laws: where can and can't you fly your drone?

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 05:00 AM PST

Keeping track of the latest UK drone laws can be tricky, with new legislation and police powers recently changing the legal landscape for drone flyers. Luckily, we've rounded up all of the latest drone law changes, and also suggested the best apps to help you decide where to safely fly your drone. (Not in the UK? Scroll down to the end of the page to find out about drone laws in your region).

Using a drone to capture aerial stills and video is a great way to enhance your photography – they can provide new and exciting viewpoints of subjects, as well as provide access to otherwise inaccessible locations.

But unlike your regular stills camera, you can’t simply unbox your new drone, charge it up and take it out for its first flight; there are a number of important tasks you need to perform to ensure you're abiding by the latest UK drone laws.

With new police powers, drone laws and large on-the-spot fines now in place, it’s more important than ever that you know where you stand and what’s required of you as a drone pilot. While this may sound daunting, it’s all actually quite simple. So, here’s everything you need to know about flying drones legally and safely in the UK.

UK drone laws

UK drone laws: the basics

  • Keep your drone in direct sight
  • Don't fly higher than 120m above ground
  • Avoid flying closer than 50m to people, buildings and cars
  • Don't fly closer than 150m to buildings and crowds of people
  • You now need a drone operator ID for drones between 250g-20kg

The most important basic information to familiarize yourself with is the Drone Code, which clearly outlines what you should and should not do when flying a drone. This information also makes it clear where you can and cannot legally fly your drone. In a nutshell, follow this simple guide at all times and you’ll have no problems.

When flying, your drone must always remain in unaided visual line of sight and fly no more than an altitude of 400ft (120m) and a distance of 500m (1640ft). With most drones, you can set these parameters to stop you from exceeding them.

When flying you should never fly closer than 50m (150ft) to people or properties. It’s recommended that you don’t fly over people. For crowds of people and built-up areas, you should never fly closer than 150m (500ft), which means you can’t legally fly over them.

UK drone laws

The UK Civil Aviation Authority has published a three-page Drone Code with handy visual guides like this.

For airports, things are a little different for obvious reasons. Around all aerodromes and airports, there’s an exclusion zone (restricted airspace) of 2-2.5 nautical miles, with a 5km long and 1km wide exclusion at both ends of each runway.

Restricted airspace means that you cannot fly in these places unless you've got permission from the relevant authority. These include around airports, critical infrastructure and military installations. Take all of this into account, though, and you'll be fine – as long as you've registered your drone...

UK drone laws: the drone registration scheme

  • For drones between 250g-20kg you now need a valid flyer ID
  • To get this you need to take an online test and pay £9 per year
  • The online test only needs to be taken every three years
  • The DJI Mavic Mini's 249g weight means it doesn't need a flyer ID

New UK drone laws came into effect on 30 November 2019. These require anyone who flies a drone that weighs between 250g and 20kg to take an online safety test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions and to register as a drone operator and flyer.

Weighing in at just 249g, the DJI Mavic Mini is therefore exempt from this law.

The operator ID must be displayed clearly on your drone(s). This means it’s now illegal to fly a drone in the UK without meeting these new requirements, unless your drone weighs 249g or less, you only fly indoors or within a secure netted area.

The cost of the test and getting the operator and flyer IDs is £9 per year, and the online test only needs to be taken every three years. For more information about the new laws, to take the online test and obtain operator and flyer ID visit the official Civil Aviation Authority page.

UK drone laws: new police powers

Police forces across the country have received new powers to land, inspect and seize drones thanks to new legislation – the Traffic Management and Unmanned Aircraft Bill. They also have new stop and search powers around airports, prisons and other restricted locations.

Drone pilots could face on the spot fines of up to £1,000 for offences such as not having or displaying a flyer ID on drones weighing over 249g, not being able to provide proof of permissions and exemptions and, of course, for flying dangerously and/or in restricted locations.

UK drone laws: useful tools to help you fly safely

  • All new DJI drones over 250g will include AirSense technology
  • This system will help alert you to any aircraft within miles of your drone
  • NATS Drone Assist and UAV Forecast are also helpful apps for drone pilots

Flying drones isn’t rocket science, and in many cases having an up-to-date knowledge of the Drone Code and a dose of good old fashioned common sense will keep you, your drone and everyone safe.

In the near future, DJI will introduce a new alert system into consumer drones called DJI AirSense. This system uses ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) technology, which is used in aeroplanes and helicopters, to provide drone pilots with location data from nearby aircraft fitted with ADS-B transmitters. This flight data will be provided through DJI flight apps to alert drone pilots of potential risks to allow them to respond accordingly.

There are also a number of third-party apps that make safe flight planning quick and easy. So here are two apps that are essential for everyone, whether you're flying a drone for fun or commercially (if you’re a Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO) licence holder). And best of all, they’re both free:

NATS Drone Assist

NATS Drone Assist is an essential app because it allows you to locate your current position using GPS, or to search for a planned location in advance. It shows restricted airspace, NOTAMs (notices to airmen) which are temporary warnings, and rules governing airspace, as well as ground hazards and much more. Basically, this app tells you whether or not you can fly your drone safely and legally.

UAV Forecast

UAV Forecast is a weather app aimed directly at drone pilots and gives you a range of weather and other relevant information to help you decide whether it’s safe to fly. Observation of weather conditions on location remains essential, but this allows you to get a good idea of whether or not it’s safe to fly in advance.

UK drone laws: what laws are coming next?

In July 2020, new European drone regulations are scheduled to start in the UK, despite the UK having left the EU. This will see the UK align with the European Aviation Safety Agency. In a nutshell, the new rules will see drastic changes in the differences between leisure/hobbyist and commercial flights, with a greater emphasis on the type of drone(s) you have and where you intend to fly. This will be on top of the current registration requirements we’ve already covered.

New drones will be classified under a new system, as well as flights themselves being categorised. The aim is to make things simpler, and indeed safer, than they are now. But like with anything new, only time will tell how effective this new approach will be. So, until then, just make sure you follow the Drone Code and register yourself as a drone flyer, and you'll be home and dry for the foreseeable future.

7 books that HBO, Netflix or Amazon should adapt for television

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 03:00 AM PST

It’s a glorious time for TV adaptations. Sure, there are a few too many TV streaming services trying to get in on the action, but with the likes of HBO’s Watchmen, BBC’s His Dark Materials, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show, these online platforms are bringing hallowed books to a wider audience than ever before.

Sure, adaptations can be a tricky business, what with rights, optioning, and the not-do-fondly named ‘production hell’ that so many film and television projects can get mired in – not to mention the issue of making a show that both appeases an IP’s existing fanbase and manages to be accessible to others.

We’re bound to see some stinkers in the coming years, but there’s every chance we’ll see some exceptional adaptations too, with television series that give a story time to develop over 10 or 20 hours, rather than the tight constraints of the 90-minute blockbuster.

With that in mind, we’ve brought together our list of books we’d love to see adapted for the small screen – in hope that the likes of Netflix, HBO, Hulu, or Amazon would do it justice.

1. Mortal Engines

Wait, didn’t we just have a film adaptation? There was a Mortal Engines movie back in 2018, produced by Peter Jackson and starring Misfits’ Robert Sheehan, but no one was much impressed by it. The four-part book series, by Philip Reeves, offers a thrilling, bleak, and immense post-apocalyptic dystopia, in which giant lumbering machine-cities chase each other across ravaged plains for spare parts.

It’s a story of risk, robots, romance, and rollicking adventure – with a good dose of enthusiasm (and scepticism) for the wonders of engineering, especially in times of war. While you’d need the budget to do it justice, there’s certainly a high-impact TV series waiting here to be made.

2. Slaughterhouse-Five

Kurt Vonnegut’s anti-war novel is as timely, and curious, as when it was first published in 1969. It follows the fortunes of Billy Pilgrim, an American soldier caught up in the horrors and absurdities of World War II – including the bombing of Dresdent that Vonnegut himself witnessed in his time in the military.

With a narrative that jumps back and forth in time and place – with some surprising sci-fi elements that include actual time travel – it’s perfect for TV serialization, and with some smart screenwriting could have something highly relevant to say about modern-day warfare. Your move, HBO.

3. The Inkheart Trilogy

The daughter of a book-binder isn’t the most obvious heroine, and being able to read fictional characters to life isn’t the most obvious superpower either, but that’s what author Corenlia Funke spins into the Inkheart trilogy. Full of surprises, and with far larger worlds than a library at its disposal, Inkheart has plenty to offer a TV adaptation.

There’s three books worth of ink to adapt, and plenty of heartbreaking moments to commit to screen. And please: forget the 2008 film ever happened.

4. 10 minutes 38 seconds in this Strange World

Sure, you’d probably need to change the title for television – especially as it might seem like quite a misleading reference to the runtime – but this substantial book from Turkish writer Elif Shafakis is well worth consideration.

Shortlisted for the Man Booker 2019 Prize for Fiction, the novel is a deep-dive into the life of an Istanbul sex worker, Tequila Leila, who looks back on her life in her final moments before her brain shuts down for good. A tale of friendship, and struggle, that puts sex workers front and center – and which would make quite a statement in a TV landscape that usually relegates them to statistics in CSI case files.

5. The Bridge Trilogy

Not got enough cyberpunk in your life? A TV series based on William Gibson’s trilogy of novels should certainly scratch that itch, and could fill in the gaps nicely between seasons of Altered Carbon on Netflix (even if Cyberpunk 2077 may keep us busy for much of the next year).

Set in a bright, brash, colorful world – with plenty of visits to cyberspace in between futuristic versions of California and Tokyo – The Bridge Trilogy could be a new sci-fi hit in the making.

6. V for Vendetta

But what of comic books? Watchmen showed us the path towards adaptations of Alan Moore's work that are in the spirit of the source material but not exactly the same story.

Moore has fair reasons not to support people profiting off of his work, but HBO's show does lead you to wonder what high-end, fresh takes on his work could look like. V For Vendetta, co-created with artist David Lloyd, is an 80s comic of blatant anti-Thatcherism.

What would an adaptation about the story V look like in an age where people genuinely wear the character's mask as a sign of protest? We'd love to find out. V For Vendetta had a perfectly fine movie starring Natalie Portman in 2006, but it was a little bit too glossy, and felt strangely un-British in its portrayal of the country. A modern TV adaptation could be a big deal.

7. From Hell

On that same note, Moore and artist Eddie Campbell's From Hell graphic novel got a pretty terrible movie adaptation back in the early 00s. The book is pretty dense, and would make much more sense as a TV show. In fact, in 2014, it was even announced for cable network FX, but clearly the project never went ahead.

From Hell, though, is still one of the best works of fiction based on the Jack the Ripper killings, with a conspiracy theory-level story that turns the murders into a harbinger of the dark century to come. It would make an amazing TV show if adapted faithfully.

Bagel Labs innovates smart measuring tape with a digital screen

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 02:56 AM PST

We have seen people using flimsy measuring tapes to measure but as the world is going digital, Bagel Labs is aiming to cash in on it.

The South Korean start-up’s digital tape – PIE – can measure and sync with an app automatically.

Soohong Park, CEO of Bagel Labs, told TechRadar Middle East, that day of noting the measurements reading and scribbling in logbooks have gone.

Park studied mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University and received a PhD from the University of Cambridge and worked for four years at Samsung Corning before leaving the company and establishing Bagel Labs in 2016.

“More than 100 years, we have been using conventional tapes to measure ourselves and in the construction industry. Bagel Labs is innovating the way we measure by putting a digital screen on the device so that people don’t have to read the measure or take time to note it down,” he said.

With the Bluetooth connectivity, he said that it can automatically note the readings on the app and on its cloud services.

He said that PIE is popular in two different industries and its initial focus has been on digital health industry and also supplying the devices to public healthcare industries.

Moreover, he said that PIE has made it easier to keep track of waist size and body fat percentage.

The Nature journal studied and published in 2018 a relationship between the waist size and body fat percentage.

Based on the waist size, the app tells you about the body fat percentage.

Targeting fitness aficionados

For fitness aficionados, Park said that it is easy to continue to track the progress and help consumers keep motivated in a bid to beat their fitness goals.

The weighing scale doesn’t tell the whole story and can fluctuate but he said that individual measurements of waist and other body parts can provide more exact results on the workout progress.

“Your weight can be skewed by muscle growth, water retention, or any number of other factors. PIE seamlessly stores, tracks, and analyses data points on seven different critical body parts - waist, shoulders, chest or bust, hips, thighs, biceps, and calves. You can track the changes in your body composition, such as your waist-to-hip ratio, to establish a clear picture of your overall health,” he said.

He said the optical sensor technology on the device is patent protected and runs on iOS and Android.

The iOS users can integrate size measurements into the Apple Health app, and future integration capabilities are in the works for Google Fit, Samsung Health and MyFitnessPal.

Park said that the PIE tape measurements can be connected to multiple smartphones and up to 100 members can be added to a single account.

There are other body tape devices in the market to measure such as MyoTape, Care Touch, Lightstuff, Wintape and Reidea but Park said that it is difficult to take measurements of your stomach or thighs with one hand but PIE has a mechanical design, a hook and a chip, to make a loop every easy.

There are some competitors, manufactured in China, and they also have digital screens but, he said that they don’t have Bluetooth connectivity.

“Our product is twice pricier than the competitors but our accuracy is better than others (with a maximum error of 0.5%) and has application as well.”

Spreading wings

Furthermore, Park said that the device can record a voice memo, with a press of a button, to describe what you have measured and can measure in three modes - string mode, up to about 10 feet (3 metres), wheel mode, measure up to about 33 feet (10 metres) and laser mode, measure up to 16 feet 4 inches (5 metres).

PIE is built with a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery that lasts up to 24 hours and averages 8 hours with constant use.

“The other sector we are focusing on is fashion industries (garment manufacturing) which takes more than 1,000 measurements every day and log the data automatically,” Park said.

The company has sold 18,000 units so far since one-and-a-half years of production in Korea, the US and Japan.

“We are in talks with a couple of governments in South East Asian countries and looking for franchisees and distribution channels in the Middle East, including the UAE. This year, we are planning to sell around 20,000 units,” he said.

Moreover, he said that the company plans to collect data of the body sizes and is in talks with fashion e-commerce industries.

“Eventually, we plan to create a contact platform for body measurement data and there are parties who would like to utilise the data and use towards their applications and it will become a prized data in the future, the information is crucial for both customers and retailers,” he said.

Motorola Razr 2 likely won't drop the clamshell, and the design team told us why

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 01:00 AM PST

When we review a product on TechRadar, our writers often make a wishlist of what they’d like to see in its follow-up; it’s not often, though, that onegets the opportunity to ask the people who made the device what they’d like the next version to be like.

We recently spoke to two people involved in the creation of the Motorola Razr 2019 foldable phone, Vice President of Consumer Experience Design Ruben Castano, and Director of Product Management Carl Steen,

But we also go the chance to ask them both about the future of Motorola foldables.

In particular, what they’d like to include in, say, the Motorola Razr 2020 or whatever the next flexible device is. (It’s worth bearing in mind that this conversation doesn’t ‘confirm’ any features – just because the phone designers want a feature in the device, doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll end up in the finished product.)

Great ex-spec-tations

So what might change internally for the next Motorola Razr? According to Steen “Of course increasing the specs will be part of that for sure,” which is only natural given that’s usually one of the key changes between different device generations for any phone.

The Motorola Razr 2019 had unimpressive, mid-range specs, and when we asked about using a top-end Snapdragon chipset, Steen gave us an example as to why that wasn’t necessary “the Snapdragon only brought to the table things like Quad-HD performance, we didn’t have Quad-HD displays, so that would have been overkill."

Perhaps the next Motorola Razr will have a higher-res screen, meaning the use of the high-end chipsets that would more adequately justify the huge $1,499 / €1,599 (around £1,350, AU$2,000)  price tag..

Steen also told us “things like 5G [...] are all items that we’d like to pursue on our next generation devices.”

That’s intriguing - while the wording strongly implies there’s no certainty of a 5G Motorola Razr 2020, to see that the company is pursuing a 5G foldable phone when it doesn’t actually have a native 5G phone at time of writing (not including the Moto 5G Mod, which lets you bring 5G connectivity to a Moto Z device) hints that perhaps Motorola is set to unleash a slew of next-gen-connected smartphones.

The Motorola Razr 2019, half-way open or closed.

Finding the form factor

The first thing Steen told us when we asked about future Motorola devices was that “we feel confident in the form factor”, so it’s likely the clamshell foldable design has a place in the future of some Moto phones.

That makes sense – as detailed in our previous interview, Motorola went through a lot of work deciding what kind of foldable phone it wanted to make, and the team settled on the clamshell as a natural way to create a small device with.

“As we think about future devices, we’re really looking at how to optimize that [form factor] Steen said, “for example, the QuickView Display – we’re looking at ways to make an even [richer] experience”.

The QuickView Display is the small screen on the front of the device when it’s closed. The mini-screen is used for quicknotification access as well as a small selfie camera, among other functions.

“[H]aving that display on the front of the device was not only useful, giving me the right information I needed, but also could change my behaviour on my smartphone in a good way [as a result],” added Steen.

Early sketches of the Motorola Razr, with different sizes and designs of the QuickView Display.

So it seems that Motorola might add features to this display for future Razr (or other foldable) devices. This is backed up by sketches provided to TechRadar by Motorola (above), in which we can see a few different ways the QuickView Display could have been implemented in the Razr 2019.

It shows large, small and all-front screens, so it’s possible the company might well experiment with more options for the front screen too.

What about something completely different?

One of the most interesting things we learned in our last interview with Moto’s Steen and Castano was that it wasn’t just the Razr phone that was considered for foldable tech - things like a flexible smartwatch were mooted, and we might still see new flexible device form factors from Motorola.

“We are fully committed to developing ideas and products that make sense for consumers in [the foldable display technology] space,” Castano said, elaborating “there are other technologies also emerging and evolving, whether it’s connectivity with 5G, or things you can start doing with the intersection of physical and digital interfaces.”

The Nubia Alpha was a smartwatch with a curved screen, that never really took off.

So it seems Motorola isn’t necessarily done with, as Castano mentioned early in our interview, "having the device or the technology conform to the human body in the sense of a wearable".

So far  there haven’t been any popular examples of smart devices that flexibly conform to the human body, with the few attempts, like the Nubia Alpha with a curved screen that meant you had to rotate your wrist to properly see the display, all falling short, and that’s likely why Motorola hasn’t put out a flexible wearable just yet.

So will we see another flexible Motorola Razr - and if so, how will it look? That depends on one thing: the success of the current model. As that’s just gone on sale, it’s hard to tell how it will be received by early adopters - if it’s a roaring success, then it’s likely Motorola will be itching to get a sequel out to build on that hype.

However, it seems that at this early stage the response to the device has been far more muted from reviewers, with TechRadar’s David Lumb saying “its execution leaves several things to be desired” so it’s likely – if Moto wants to establish itself as a front-runner in the flexible smartphone space – it will need to be even bolder with design, improve the spec list and do that without driving up an already-large price.

But it’s good to hear that phone designers are excited about the possibilities of flexible devices - hopefully the development will continue to the point where we get innovative and attractive devices for a more palatable price point.

England vs South Africa live stream: watch today's T20 Women's World Cup 2020 from anywhere

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:29 AM PST

England will be looking to live up to their billing as genuine contenders for the Women’s T20 World Cup as they kick off their campaign against South Africa on Sunday in Perth.

Having won the inaugural edition of the tournament at home back in 2009, they’ve since gone on to be beaten finalists on three occasions and will be keen to lose their regular runners-up tag this time out.

South Africa will also be looking to improve upon past performances, having reached the semi-finals just once in six appearances.

South Africa’s selectors have opted for an experienced side for the tournament, but their key component to the squad is undoubtedly talismanic captain Dane van Niekerk who is back following a year blighted by injuries.

England’s build up for this match hasn’t been ideal, following their shock defeat to Sri Lanka in their World Cup warm-up, but they’ll nevertheless be expected to have enough to see off South Africa here.

Led by an in-form Heather Knight, England boast one of the strongest batting orders in the tournament, with Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt looking like the sort of dynamic opening duo that could spearhead the team’s passage to the latter stages of this World Cup.

It's a Women’s T20 World Cup match not be missed - don't miss a ball by checking out our England vs South Africa live stream guide.

You might find you have a problem accessing your usual home service if you're abroad because of geo-blocking. It's where local broadcasters lock online streams of their coverage to specific areas by logging the IP address of the device trying to access their website.

Fortunately, there's an easy way to get around this nuisance and tune into the cricket just like you would from home. It's called using a VPN, and these useful pieces of software - known as Virtual Private Networks in full - allow you to log back to your country that is broadcasting the match.

Firms in EMEA take two days less than global average to detect a cyber incident

Posted: 23 Feb 2020 12:06 AM PST

Organisations in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) are two days better than the global average of 56 days to detect a cyber incident as organisations are detecting and containing attacks faster.

In EMEA the median dwell time fell by 69.5% to 54 days in 2019 compared to 177 days in 2018.

FireEye Mandiant M-Trends 2020 Report showed that organisations have put more emphasis on GDPR and increasing focus on security due to the ongoing challenges organisations face from sophisticated threat actors.

The global median dwell time decreased by 28% to 56 days in 2019 compared to 78 days last year.

Dwell time is calculated as the number of days an attacker is present in a victim network before they are detected. The median represents a value at the midpoint of a data set sorted by magnitude.

Internal detection, when an organisation independently discovers that it has been compromised, fell 40.6% to 30 days compared to 50.5 days in 2018 while external notification, when an outside entity informs an organisation that it has been compromised, also fell by 23.37% to 141 days compared to 184 days in 2018.

For the first time in four years, external notifications exceeded internal detections.

FireEye Mandiant M-Trends 2020 Report showed that the shift is potentially due to a variety of factors, such as increases in cybersecurity vendor and law enforcement notifications, the continued expansion of the cybersecurity industry, changes in public disclosure norms and compliance changes.

The report showed that over 500 new malware families were observed in 2019, 58% of which were discovered through Mandiant service efforts, including incident responses.

The majority of these new samples either impacted Windows or multiple platforms while new malware families, solely impacting macOS and Linux, remain in the minority.

Furthermore, 70% of the samples identified belonged to one of the five most frequently seen families, which are based on open source tools with active development. These points demonstrate that not only are malware authors innovating, cybercriminals are also outsourcing tasks to monetize operations faster.

Mandiant researchers analysed the 186 unique malware families from Mandiant engagements this year to reveal six traits and trends. Traits focus on the malware specifics, such as category, file type, accessibility and obfuscation. Trends include the top families and how many of them were new in 2019.

“We have seen organisations largely improving their level of cybersecurity sophistication, but combatting the latest threats is still a huge challenge for them,” said Jurgen Kutscher, Executive Vice-President of Service Delivery at FireEye.

“There are more active groups now than ever before and we’ve seen an aggressive expansion of their goals. Consequently, it’s crucial for organizations to continue building and testing their defences,” he said.

More ransomware attacks ahead

Given the ease at which ransomware attacks can be carried out and the willingness of victims to pay, FireEye has assessed that threat groups will continue to leverage ransomware as a secondary means for monetising their access to victim environments.

The report revealed that the successful monetisation of ransomware attacks and the availability of ransomware as a service have contributed to an increase in ransomware cases.

“It has also led some established cybercrime groups to turn to ransomware as a secondary means of generating revenue. In 2019 we saw several cases in which threat actors that historically targeted sensitive information such as personally identifiable information (PII) and credit card information turned to ransomware to monetise access to victim networks,” report said.

Of the attacks that FireEye Mandiant professionals responded to, the greatest majority (29%) were likely motivated by direct financial gain. This includes extortion, ransom, card theft, and illicit transfers. The second most common (22%) was data theft likely in support of intellectual property or espionage end goals.

This 75-inch large format display makes a great, affordable digital signage solution

Posted: 22 Feb 2020 09:00 PM PST

When it comes to large format displays, 75-inch screens have found a happy middle ground between size and affordability.

The price premium between a 60-inch and 75-inch model from the same cohort can be as little as 100 percent - not bad for 20 percent extra diagonal inches. The price difference between 75-inch and 80-inch is often triple or more.

Two models in the US (the RCA RTU7575 and the Spectre U750CV-U) compete at market entry level at just under $600 (or roughly £460) with free freight delivery.

Both are 4K displays, though neither can boast smart TV capabilities. The former model edges the latter slightly on the connector front, with four HDMI slots to the Spectre's three.

The RCA model uses FALD technology to ensure sharper contrasts between lights and darks, plus it includes an ambient light sensor to adjust the brightness on the fly.

They both have VESA mounts for easy placement, a USB port with autonomous media playing capabilities and low power consumption/dissipation.

Either of the two should make great value products for businesses after an affordable digital menu board.

Don’t expect any bonus features for your money, though. In an ideal world, they'd boast the ability to withstand high temperature changes or humid environments, long warranties, the ability to operate 24/7, commercial interfaces and a built-in digital signage cloud management service.
