Super Bowl 2020: when is it, where is it, who's playing, channel, kickoff start time and more

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:07 PM PST

So you've made it to another Super Bowl Sunday, where two of this season's very best teams - the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs - will do battle in football's biggest game of all.

If you've been counting down the hours until the big game kicks off, you'll want to know everything there is to know about Super Bowl 2020. We're rounding up all the best channels to catch the big game, when you need to tune in to catch kickoff, and what to expect from the halftime show. Plus, if you're tuning in from further afield, we've got all the information you need to stream the Super Bowl live online as well.

And that's because the Super Bowl has become more than merely a game of football - it's transcended the world of sport and become a cultural pinnacle in itself. Just like the premiere of The Mandalorian or the final season of Game of Thrones - the Super Bowl is now a major cultural, entertainment extravaganza.

Super Bowl 2020 start time and date

The Super Bowl will kick off shortly after broadcast begins at 6.30pm ET / 3.30pm PT / 5.30pm CT on Sunday February 2. If you're viewing from the UK you'll be staying up a little later and tuning it at 11.30pm GMT, meanwhile Australia will have to take the whole day off with the game starting at 10.30am AEDT on Monday, February 3

If you're looking to watch the Super Bowl live from central Europe, you can expect the game to start at 12.30pm CET.

Super Bowl channels and networks across the world

The US is sorted for Super Bowl channels, with Fox taking on the bulk of the coverage direct from Miami. However, if you're outside of the US, terrestrial services usually run live coverage for free on a major channel. We've gathered some of the most popular below:

  • United Kingdom: BBC 1 / Sky Sport (or Now TV)
  • Australia: 7mate / ESPN (via Foxtel TV subscription)
  • Mexico: ESPN / Fox Sports / Televisa / TV Azteca
  • Brazil: ESPN Deportes
  • Canada: CTV
  • Germany: SAT 1
  • Spain: Canal+ (paid)
  • Netherlands: FoxSports 2 (paid) / Fox HD
  • Czech Republic: Sport2 (paid)
  • Switzerland: SAT 1

Where is the Super Bowl this year?

This year, the Super Bowl is in the hands of Miami as Florida takes on the football championships in the NFL's 100th season. The game will be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins and host of five previous Super Bowl championships.

Two of those five games saw the 49ers take the Lombardi trophy home, making Hard Rock well-trodden ground for San Francisco.

Who's playing in Super Bowl LIV?

Super Bowl LIV will be played between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. While the 49ers are hoping to join the Patriots and the Steelers with a sixth Super Bowl win putting them in a three way tie with the New England and Pittsburgh teams for the most won ever. The Chiefs, on the other hand, haven't seen the grass of a Super Bowl for fifty years since winning Super Bowl IV.

Both teams are coming off of explosive wins against divisional rivals in their respective conferences, flooring the competition in both instances. Whatever goes down on game day it's set to be an intense matchup, with Patrick Mahomes and Jimmy Garoppolo both hungry for the win, albeit for very different reasons.

How to watch Super Bowl 2020

Catching the big game in the US and UK has never been easier thanks to a range of streaming services offering live Super Bowl and Divisional Playoffs coverage.

While Fox is broadcasting the game free, US fans can also stream the Super Bowl and take advantage of a load of extra content through Hulu, YouTubeTV, DirecTV Now, and FuboTV. Meanwhile, fans in the UK can pick up coverage of the full Super Bowl game live as it happens on BBC One, which also opens up the opportunity to stream the game later (if you don't fancy staying up into the wee hours) on BBC iPlayer. If you want to get to the action sooner, you can pick up a Sky Sports subscription and gain access to the Divisional Playoff games as well as the Championship.

Google wants to sell you a printed photos subscription service

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 11:00 AM PST

Google is trialling a monthly subscription service that makes physical prints of your best photos and delivers them directly to your door – a way of preserving your "best memories" in a way that you can hang on the wall or stick on the fridge.

As spotted by 9to5Google, the service will set you back $7.99 (about £6 / AU$12) a month, and for your money you get 10 printed pictures, 4 inches by 6 inches in size, on matte white card stock.

Google picks the photos that its AI thinks are the best shots, but you can choose what type of snaps you get sent: mostly people and pets, mostly landscapes, or "a little bit of everything".

You can change your preferences at any time if you feel like you're getting too many prints of the dog or too many shots of sweeping mountain ranges without any people in them.

Limited availability

Google is describing the subscription service as a "trial program", and it's only available in the US for the time being – there's no word yet on whether it'll ever become available more widely.

There's no way to apply to try it out, but if you're chosen to participate, you'll see a banner saying "you're invited to the monthly photo prints trial" when you sign into Google Photos.

Google has been pushing its physical prints service in recent months, though it's been available for years. You can get everything from large canvas prints to photo books from the images stored in Google Photos, all with a few clicks or taps.

The printing service helps Google make more money from its photo storage app, which can be used for free within certain limits – that's perhaps one reason to think this subscription option won't be a trial for much longer.

AWS: Your complete guide to Amazon Web Services & features

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 08:24 AM PST

In the current age of cloud computing, there is now a multitude of mature services available -- offering security, scalability, and reliability for many business computing needs. What was once a colossal undertaking to build a data center, install server racks, and design storage arrays has given way to an entire marketplace of services that are always just a click away.

One leader in that marketplace is Amazon Web Services, which consists of 175 products and services in a vast catalog that provides cloud storage, compute power, app deployment, user account management, data warehousing, tools for managing and controlling Internet of Things devices, and just about anything you can think of that a business needs.

AWS really grew in popularity and capability over the last decade. One reason is that AWS is so reliable and secure. It’s a gold standard and used by some of the most well-known brands in existence, such as Netflix, Uber, and Airbnb. What started as primarily a cloud infrastructure for computing power and storage evolved and scaled quickly (like the service offerings themselves) as companies kept looking for more and more products to help them do business.

One example of this is AWS Snowball, a highly unique service that involves a physical device that Amazon sends to you. Companies can off-load legacy data from tape back-up systems or from an entire data center (using multiple Snowball clients). When the migration is finished, an electronic label changes automatically so you can send the devices back. The data then becomes part of AWS and the cloud infrastructure and all the benefits that provides.

AWS is a leader but is also not alone in providing exemplary products and services. Both Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud and the two primary competitors in the space. IBM is also a major cloud provider. Perhaps one distinguishing characteristic of AWS is that Amazon uses its own cloud infrastructure to power Amazon.com, the most popular e-commerce website today.

Another important characteristic -- the AWS Management Console is a single point of entry to most services, many of which are compatible with each other and work in conjunction. Even a tiny startup can sign up for an AWS account and get started with the console in a few minutes. There may be one simple “register here” button for AWS, but it opens up the door to a wealth of services and products to help businesses achieve their goals.

List of AWS services

The following Amazon Web Services are available:

AWS AMI: An AWS AMI (Amazon Machine Image) allows you to deploy instances in the cloud. In simple terms, it is like the portion of a local server in a data center or like a virtual machine that runs in the cloud. Without an AMI, the advantages of cloud computing really would not be possible.

AWS AppSync: AppSync is a cloud-based service that keeps mobile and web apps up to date, but only as needed and only at the scale you need for your particular needs. It uses a cost structure that is designed to maintain only critical data and leave data at rest untouched.

Amazon Athena: For companies that house their data in the cloud using a service like Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service), Amazon Athena is a godsend. It’s a query service that allows you to run SQL queries in the cloud, which means there’s no need to operate a local database.

Amazon Aurora: For those who need to deploy a relational database in the cloud, there is one main option from Amazon called Aurora. This means you can rely on a high-performance database that can keep up with the needs of your applications.

AWS Batch: One of the key advantages to the cloud is that the infrastructure can scale as your needs change. AWS Batch is a batch processing service for Big Data projects. As your projects increase in size, the cloud infrastructure supporting it can adapt.

AWS CLI: AWS CLI (Command Line Interface) is a downloadable application you can use to control AWS functions. This command line introduces a new, powerful way to form commands, while making it simple for team members to execute them.

AWS CloudFormation: For companies that need to deploy and manage application stacks and resource, AWS CloudFormation is a way to “form the cloud” so that you can deploy web and mobile apps easily. For managing the cloud, you can use one main command line interface.

AWS CloudFront: A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is normally a difficult undertaking for companies to develop and deploy. AWS CloudFront is a CDN that runs in the cloud and can scale as your media streaming, messaging, and file distribution needs change and evolve.

AWS CodeDeploy: This service allows you to deploy apps in a cloud environment, such as Amazon EC2, AWS Fargate, AWS Lambda, or your on-premise infrastructure. It means faster, more efficient deployment for companies that want to reach a market segment faster.

AWS CodePipeline: Modern application development is a complex undertaking, but AWS CodePipeline allows companies to manage all of the steps involved, from building, testing, and production. It’s an efficient method because of a single point of management and control.

AWS Cognito: User account control is easy when it is part of a brand new app. You might only have a few dozen users. AWS Cognito can help when you start scaling up to hundreds, thousands, or even millions of users, helping with the management and authentication.

Amazon Connect: Amazon Connect is the ultimate way to improve customer service, especially for small businesses. It uses the cloud in order to save storage, it’s pay-as-you-go, and efficient and simple to navigate.

AWS Console: AWS Console is the primary source of controlling the services you use, scaling your cloud environment, and even deploying new services. It is like a one-stop shop for cloud computing needs. AWS Console is extremely fast, easy to use, and even offers support assistance if one of your services isn’t working properly.

Amazon Corretto: A production ready distribution of OpenJDK, Amazon Corretto allows you to create, run and deploy Java applications in the cloud. It’s designed to make this process more efficient and scalable so that you don’t have to overhaul your infrastructure.

AWS Data Pipeline: Data transformation is a term that can make your head spin, especially if you are in charge of the migration. AWS Data Pipeline makes this much more fluid and efficient, even if you are migrating and moving data in a complex environment.

AWS Direct Connect: AWS Direct Connect is a bridge between the old and the new. It’s a service that connects legacy and non-critical data to data stores that are actively deployed for your applications and infrastructure. The data becomes available for apps in real-time.

Amazon DynamoDB: Any garden-variety database running on a server just won’t cut it in the modern age of complex apps for the web and mobile devices. Amazon DynamoDB is a high-performance database that runs in the cloud, with all of the advantages of scale and reliability you’d expect.

AWS EBS: AWS EBS (Elastic Block Store) is a cloud service that allows you to store files in the more traditional block storage format that has existed for decades, which is helpful for legacy apps, Big Data projects, or archiving purposes.

Amazon EC2: Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) provides an IT infrastructure that runs in the cloud. It offers power, flexibility, and performance all at the same time. The biggest benefit of EC2 is that it offers quick, efficient scalability for users.

AWS Elastic Beanstalk: As the name implies, Elastic Beanstalk provides an adaptable, flexible way to scale applications without the usual setup, management, and configuration of the server infrastructure. It’s elastic in the sense that it can adapt and scale to your business needs.

Amazon EMR: Amazon Elastic MapReduce is a service for deploying the frameworks needed to do Big Data analytics in the cloud. It is often used for genomic research, drug discovery, analyzing materials used for new products, and other tests that require massive data analysis.

AWS Fargate: AWS Fargate is Amazon’s serverless compute engine that makes it easier than ever to update or develop an application without fear of a data breach, so that you’re constantly keeping up with new infrastructure demands.

AWS Glue: With AWS Glue, there’s no need for advanced technology in order to keep all of your data in one place. AWS Glue is the “glue” that ties together different kinds of data, making it readily available for queries.

Amazon Kinesis: Amazon Kinesis provides real-time analytics for data as it flows in your cloud infrastructure. The service provides real-time analytics and reporting functions. The real power of Kinesis is that it can keep up with your apps and scale accordingly.

AWS Lambda: AWS Lambda is a computing service provided by Amazon that processes code and automatically operates computing resources as needed. As a cloud-based service, there is never a need to worry about power or storage.

Amazon Lightsail: Amazon Lightsail is a framework that allows developers to run applications on virtual servers in the cloud. Because it is a secure environment and is a compliment to other Amazon services like Elastic Compute Cloud (ECS2), it has a powerful use case.

AWS Outposts: What if you could run a replica of the cloud services Amazon offers, but in your own data center? That’s the idea behind AWS Outposts, a service that provides all of the features and functions of cloud services but in your local infrastructure.

Amazon RDS: Amazon RDS helps companies store relational databases in the cloud. It can be used for analytics, business dashboards, web applications or any app that uses a relational database. This provides added flexibility and an ability to scale to your needs.

Amazon Redshift: Amazon Redshift is an online data warehouse that provides its users with flexibility, ease of navigation, security, automatic updates -- and it’s just as effective for large businesses as it is small ones.

Amazon S3: A well-known object storage service, Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) is a powerful, scalable, reliable service that meets the demands of even the most complex enterprise-grade apps and the largest companies and institutions.

Amazon SES: Amazon SES (Simple Email Service) is the best way to improve messaging. It’s pay-as-you-go, and it is designed to fit right into the current IT infrastructure your business uses. It can send several thousand messages without concerns about security or performance.

AWS Snowball: AWS Snowball is a data transfer service that helps businesses perform a more secure data migration. The data being moved will not go through the Internet, so the migration is quicker, safer, and more reliable for if you want to access the information later on. Snowball is extremely scalable, allowing businesses to transport any amount of data they need.

Amazon SNS: Modern applications are constantly communicating with servers and each other. Even simple changes like a new high-score in gaming app has to be transmitted. Amazon SNS (Simple Notification Service) manages, tracks, and controls these messages.

Amazon SQS: Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service) is a message queuing service that runs independent of the actual infrastructure you are using. It makes sure messages between servers and apps run efficiently, securely, and reliably.

AWS Step Functions: Step Functions allows developers to create apps that uses multiple transactional services. Previous to cloud computing services such as Step Functions, linking to multiple sources was much more complex, which caused issues with reliability.

AWS Storage Gateway: AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid storage option for companies with legacy data stores but who also are taking advantage of cloud storage. The service bridges the gap between the two, providing one console to control and manage both data stores.

AWS VPC: AWS VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) is, as the name implies, a secure virtual cloud that can help ease the minds of business owners launching a new website, app, or other service. AWS VPC is a separate portion of the Amazon cloud that offers a lot of flexibility and scalability.

AWS WAF: Not all firewalls run as a hardware device in a data center. AWS WAF (Web Application Firewall) is a cloud based firewall you use to protect apps and data in the cloud. Companies can add ore remove cloud security features depending on their needs.

AWS X-Ray: One of the most curiously named products from Amazon, X-Ray should not be confused with the Amazon Prime Video service for finding out more about actors. It’s a cloud service that tracks and manages all of the messaging that occurs between cloud-based apps.

Action camera deals are rare in the early months of the year, but if you're looking to get a head start on the year's photography you'll be happy to know there are already savings to be had. You can grab the DJI Osmo Action camera for just $269 / £299 right now - that's a fantastic $110 discount in the US and the cheapest we've seen the GoPro alternative go for on Amazon.

The DJI Osmo Action represents the drone-oriented company's first foray into the world of cheap action cameras. The 2019 camera is designed to put the pressure on GoPro, with a similar design, feature-set, and build but a smaller price tag overall.

At this price point, this cheap DJI deal offers fantastic value for money on the Osmo Action. You're getting 4K HDR video at 60fps, 'RockSteady' image stabilization and voice control among a wide range of shooting modes, custom settings, and useability tweaks that bring the Osmo Action up to GoPro's level.

These action camera deals may not last long, but while they do they offer the lowest price we've seen for the DJI Osmo Action in the US with the UK taking £30 off the price as well.

Today's best DJI Osmo Action camera deals

If you're still up for GoPro prices, you'll find the latest sales right here on TechRadar. Or, find more DJI deals with the latest drone sales. We're also tracking the best cheap dash cam deals as well.

FanDuel's latest daily fantasy and sports betting offers are a Super Bowl touchdown

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:11 AM PST

We know how excited you are about this weekend's Super Bowl. You've already worked out how to get a Super Bowl live stream (it's even free in some places), bought your Super Bowl jerseys and even grabbed a special Super Bowl TV deal. You've said the words 'Super Bowl' so much that they're almost beginning to lose meaning!

But if you've been waiting for a moment of inspiration to hit you before looking through odds or sorting your daily fantasy roster, then we're here to help.

We've spotted that FanDuel - one of the US's very biggest daily fantasy sports providers - has got some introductory offers on fantasy and its sportsbook. These are particularly attractive to those new to online sports betting or people who only consider this kind of thing around Super Bowl weekend.

FanDuel's Super Bowl online sports betting offer

FanDuel's Super Bowl fantasy sports offer

Is online sports betting legal?

Thanks to a Supreme Court ruling back in 2018, there is no longer a federal law against online sports betting. It's now up for separate states to decide whether or not they want to legalise gambling.

To date, only a few have. That's why FanDuel says that you have to be physically present in Indiana, New Jersey or Pennsylvania to play on its sportsbook service, while West Virginia gets added to that list for FanDuel's fantasy sports service. There's also a minimum age limit of 21 to use any of its services.

Again, all this information is on the FanDuel website. So if you're unsure on any legal requirement to play, then don't hesitate to look through its Ts&Cs.

Gambling responsibly

You probably don't need us to tell you that any form of gambling comes with serious risks and should never be undertaken as a silver bullet to solve your financial troubles. It's worth remembering the phrase...the house always wins!

If you suffer from a gambing problem or suspect somebody you know does, then we strongly suggest that you give the National Problem Gambling Hotline a call on 1-800-522-4700 to discuss it with a professional. It’s so important to make gambling safer for yourself and loved ones.

Disney Plus needs more adult-friendly retro content until its Marvel shows get here

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:00 AM PST

Next week is a big one for Disney Plus. On February 4, Disney releases its quarterly financial results, which should give us our first meaningful look at the streaming service's subscriber numbers since it was announced that 10 million people had signed up back in November. We'll then have an idea of how it's faring against competitors like Netflix.

Hopefully, too, we'll get a clearer idea of what the release schedule for the rest of the year looks like. Disney Plus has had a pretty good start to 2020, bringing the live-action remakes of The Lion King and Aladdin to the service. In February 2020 on Disney Plus, Toy Story 4 will join it, leaving Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and Frozen 2 as the big 2019 movies waiting to land on the streaming service.

It'll likely take until the summer for Disney Plus's original content to kick into high, though – this week it was reported that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the first MCU show on Disney Plus, will release in August. That'll be followed by The Mandalorian season 2, and WandaVision, another MCU show, towards the end of the year.

By 2021, then, people won't be able to stop talking about Disney Plus's shows. But for now, we've got a bit of a wait on our hands. While devotees of Star Wars animation can look forward to a new season of The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian offered a taste of the service's full potential: that is, expensive live-action TV spin-off shows that are strong enough to eclipse the movies they're based on.

It'd be nice if Disney was more open to exploring adult-friendly content from its archives in the meantime, to help fill the gap. It's hard to figure out what Disney considers to be too 'adult' for the service – but the presence of The Simpsons suggests there's a little bit of leeway there. Likewise, we know that classic Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle is planned for the service at some point, which would be a welcome addition.

Both of those shows are about families, but each have cross-generational appeal, and plenty of adult jokes. So it's worth wondering why more shows like it haven't made the journey to the streaming service.

If you look over at Disney's fellow streaming service Hulu, there are a number of great shows that feel like they fit the same template. King of the Hill, for example, was co-created by Simpsons writer Greg Daniels, and while it's a more realistic show than The Simpsons, it's not really any more adult. Twelve seasons of that would be a great addition to tide us over in fallow months for new content.

Futurama, also from Simpsons creator Matt Groening, is a darker show in some ways, and doesn't have the family focus of its sister show – but it would complement The Simpsons pretty well on Disney Plus.

Now, the animated sitcom Bob's Burgers would be pushing it, but...Disney Plus does have parental restrictions. Even though the service is designed to be family friendly, that should give them a little bit more flexibility to go slightly above PG-rated stuff. That should be enough of an excuse to broaden the range of what you get to watch on there.

These three shows have their share of more mature episodes and dark jokes, but are they really any darker than Frank Grimes' death in The Simpsons? Surely not.

Tapping in to some of these older shows could give Disney Plus a bit more cross-generational appeal while everyone waits for the good stuff. There's an argument to be made that Hulu needs to stay just as strong as Disney Plus, as the latter grows its catalogue and streaming rivals are launching competing services. They're available together in one package, after all.

But right now, Hulu is a US-only streaming service. And Disney Plus is launching worldwide, including parts of Europe in March. It'd be nice if there was more to look forward to in this half of 2020 than Disney's own blockbusters, older animated kids' shows and whatever family-friendly content comes out of the joint Disney-Fox movie archive (the romcom Splash! arrives in February). When you compare the best TV shows on Disney Plus to the movies on Disney Plus, it's obvious that the former is weaker than the latter.

Nice as it is to watch episodes of old Disney kids' entertainment like Recess on a nostalgia kick, you're still going to want to switch over to Picard or The Witcher if you're over 18.

Eventually, Disney should have plenty of original shows to keep adults entertained.

Disney Plus is arguably already performing its main function, though: it's a living archive of Disney movies, with libraries of Marvel and Star Wars films to watch too, even if licensing restrictions stop those collections from being complete. And it's not priced so high that people are likely to fret about the additional cost of having it each month. For a lot of parents, the appeal will no doubt be putting it on for their kids to keep them occupied for hours at a time. That's well worth $6.99 a month.

And by the end of the year, the slow cadence of big-budget originals won't matter so much. It sounds like viewers will be getting a Marvel series every quarter beginning with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will be a massive deal. We've seen what Disney Plus's programming can look like with The Mandalorian, and it's enormously promising.

But it'd be good to learn more about what is or isn't considered appropriate for the service. As more countries start streaming Disney Plus, it'll give us an idea of the shape of the service in years to come, and how far its family-friendly image can be stretched.

The Amazon Echo Show's latest trick is scanning barcodes for your shopping

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 07:00 AM PST

The Echo Show can tell you what the weather's going to do, show you movies on Amazon Prime Video, bring up your schedule... and now it'll also scan barcodes on items you want to buy online, apparently.

As spotted by VentureBeat, the new feature can be activated by saying "Alexa, scan this to my shopping list". You can then hold up a barcode in front of the camera on the Echo Show, and it'll identify it and add it to your Amazon shopping list.

We haven't heard anything officially from Amazon about this yet, so some of the details aren't quite clear – we're not sure if this is a US-only feature for now, for example.

The idea is obviously to make it easier to order products from Amazon and to spend even more on the site, as if the process of getting goods from the retail behemoth wasn't already frictionless enough.

Show and/or tell

It's not the first time Amazon has experimented with barcode scanning though: the Dash Wand is a standalone barcode scanner that can add products to a shopping list, as well as accepting orders via voice commands.

The Amazon apps for mobile are able to scan barcodes as well, if you want to order something online, or just check how much it's selling for on Amazon before you buy it from a different retailer.

As VentureBeat points out, according to a survey carried out by Adobe Insights, 47% of smart speaker owners have used their talking box to look up details of products, and 43% of owners have used them to create shopping lists.

That process just got a little bit easier, and it might nudge you into putting your Echo Show in the kitchen rather than anywhere else – you can quickly scan the stuff you're running out of then get back to watching some Prime Video.

If you care about PS5 vs Xbox Series X performance, you should just build a PC

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 06:00 AM PST

Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X are looming on the horizon, and both are poised to arrive on the gaming market at the end of 2020 - so of course there are a lot of leaks and rumors.

One of the most tiresome flavors of console rumors is "which one will be faster", and there are already way too many of these for our comfort. Look, I'm going to say it once: it doesn't matter. There are going to be a wealth of multiplatform games out there and they're going to be roughly equivalent on both consoles.

There will be slight differences, of course, though you're probably not going to notice unless you watch a Digital Foundry video. But all of these rumors got me thinking: you know what scene is completely rabid about slight performance differences? PC gaming. Do you know where slight performance differences actually matter? Also PC gaming.

So, if the difference between the two consoles is this huge point of contention for you, maybe you should just suck it up and build a gaming PC. Hear me out.

PS5 Xbox Series X

This processor is six months old

The PS5 and Xbox Series X will be using dated tech

Both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are going to be using an SoC equipped with AMD Zen 2 CPU and Navi graphics architectures. That's definitely some exciting news, but it also means that the differences in performance aren't going to be super pronounced.

We did see a leak appear earlier this week that suggested that the PS5 would be faster than the Xbox Series X based on some very questionable logic. The Spark Notes summary here was that there were four specs: CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD. So because the RAM and SSD were faster, this leak posited that the PS5 would itself be faster - even though the processors were equal and the GPU is faster on the Xbox Series X.

Even if that's true, and I seriously doubt it is, the differences would not be enough to make the PS5 the de facto console to buy. No matter which console you go with, you're probably going to get a similar level of performance.

We don't even know what the consoles will be capable of at this point, even if Phil Spencer revealed the processor with an "8K" engraved on it. With what we've seen of RDNA (the current AMD Navi graphics microarchitecture), it's barely able to perform at 4K, which basically eliminates 8K gaming altogether.

If that leak I mentioned earlier is correct, that the graphics processor in the Xbox Series X is faster than the one in the PS5, it probably won't be because it's using a different GPU, it's probably just clocked higher with more voltage going into it. Between the two consoles, the hardware will be so similar that this internet shouting match is just a waste of energy. You should just go for the console that has the games you want to play.

Plus, PCs look cool, so there's that.

But if you really care about performance...

There are definitely people out there that want to get the best graphics and the highest framerates no matter what, and I totally get that. But if that's what matters to you, what are you even doing playing on a console? You're going to get better performance if you build a PC, even if you use parts that are available today.

Look at it this way. The PS5 is going to be using an 8 core, 16 thread processor from AMD, based on the Zen 2 architecture. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has that exact core count, is based on the same architecture and has been out since July 2019. And, because it's a desktop PC part, it's going to be clocked a lot higher than whatever ends up in the PS5 or Xbox Series X. Hell, you can get a processor with literally twice that many cores right now

As far as graphics go, you can just pick up an RTX 2080 Ti and play games at 4K with ray tracing literally today.

And I get it, consoles are way way way cheaper than the configuration I just haphazardly mentioned. But that's because they're mass-produced with similar hardware. For all you speed demons out there that just want to play everything at 4K with the settings cranked up at 60 fps, the option is already out there for you.

The PC building scene is kind of similar to the car enthusiast scene in that way - you can go as fast and as hard as you want. Also similar to cars is that you can even start off basic with budget parts, building up your rig to an unstoppable gaming behemoth over time. So, what are you doing waiting for the Xbox Series X or PS5? Hell, you'll be able to play most Xbox games on PC, and we're starting to see a bunch of PlayStation exclusives make their way over, too.

At the end of the day, sheer power doesn't even matter when it comes to gaming. Just look at the Nintendo Switch, it's objectively weaker than anything else on the market but it still has the best games on the market. So, you can either just go with the platform that will give you the games that make you smile, or you can fall down the rabbit hole of becoming a PC enthusiast. If you want to do the latter, first of all welcome, and second of all here's how to build a PC

Sony PS4 survey floats some interesting Remote Play ideas

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:38 AM PST

Sony has big ideas for the potential future of PlayStation's Remote Play if a recently reported survey is anything to go by.

A Reddit user with the name YouRedditHereFirst is claiming to have received a survey in an email from Sony and has posted details of its contents as well as screenshots online.

The main focus of the survey is on PlayStation’s Remote Play feature which, at the moment, makes it possible to stream PS4 games to other devices including Android and iOS smartphones, PCs and the PS Vita.

Just reading the room

One of the key questions in the survey, however, asks players how they’d feel about having access to Remote Play on even more devices including Apple TV, Android TV and, most interestingly, the Nintendo Switch

There are five answers available, ranging from "not at all appealing" to "extremely appealing". We think we have an idea of where most users would lean on the scale.

Other questions look to assess player feelings towards things like offline Remote Play; access to PS1 and PS2 games via Remote Play; exclusive Remote Play maps and accessories; a more portable DualShock controller for on-the-go play as well as the ability to use Remote Play with other controllers (a mouse and keyboard, for example), amongst other things.

Of course, it’s important to note that this is just a survey dealing in hypotheticals, designed to gauge the feelings of PlayStation players and is therefore no guarantee that Sony has any intention of implementing any of the things mentioned. And, even if it does decide to pursue one of the features based on feedback, it could be years before we get to see it. What we're saying is: we all have to remain calm.

If the survey is indeed the real deal, though, it’s at the very least a suggestion that as the launch of the PS5 approaches, Remote Play is still on Sony's mind and its vision for it is even more ambitious than the "seamless" experience that was mentioned back in 2019. It’d have to be in the face of growing competition from the likes of Google Stadia and Microsoft’s Project xCloud.

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid live stream: how to watch La Liga football online from anywhere

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:00 AM PST

Real Madrid go into this derby clash top of La Liga on a 20-match unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Zinedine Zidane's side will also be in positive mood after booking their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey following their convincing 4-0 win over Real Zaragoza on Wednesday.

Can their local rivals bring an end to that run? It's a match that could have a huge bearing on this year's title race - make sure that you don't miss a moment of the action by reading on to discover how to get a Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid live stream.

While things are looking rosy for Los Blancos, Atletico are going through one of the toughest periods of talismanic boss Diego Simeone's reign at the club.

They currently sit 10 points behind their opponents on Saturda in La Liga , largely thanks to the Atletico forward line suffering a serious drought in front of goal.

Simeone will at least draw some encouragement from the fact that Real Madrid have not won a home La Liga Madrid derby since December 2012, while Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio are both ruled out of the clash for Real with long-term injuries.

Watch all the drama unfold as it happens with our Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid live stream guide below. To find out how to watch the rest of the season's games, check out our guide on how to live stream the 19/20 La Liga football season.

Use a VPN to watch La Liga from outside your country

Further down this page, you'll discover how to watch the Madrid derby in the likes of the UK, US, Canada and Australia. It's even free in some places. You can generally tune in on TV or online.

But if you go to watch La Liga online from overseas, you'll quickly discover an obstacle - geo-blocking. That means you won't be able to watch the stream unless either you i) find some dodgy feed from Reddit (which we strongly don't advise), or ii) use a VPN (which we do, and it's really easy as well).

10 PlayStation games we want to see remastered for the PS5

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 05:00 AM PST

The PlayStation 5 is less than a year away and we can’t wait to get our hands on what we’re expecting to be some fantastic PS5 games. But if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that brand new isn’t always best.

A surge in successful remasters and remakes has shown that sometimes we just have a hankering for some nostalgia - with some modern improvements. We’ve seen the likes of Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and even Resident Evil 2 land on modern consoles to fans’ delight, paving the way for the likes of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Resident Evil 3 remake to shove their way through the door this year.

Next-gen consoles may be on the way, but we think the craze of remastering and remaking old favorites isn’t going away anytime soon. So we’ve put together a list of all the PlayStation One games we want to see remastered for Sony’s PlayStation 5. Some choices may be more likely than others, but we would love to see at least a few of these hit PS5.

Silent Hill

Silent Hill 2

We’re actually quite surprised that we haven’t seen a Silent Hill remaster yet, especially considering Resident Evil 2 Remake was such a success. But with Kojima Productions’ Silent Hills being canceled and the studio going independent in a somewhat messy split from Konami, it’s understandable that the Silent Hill franchise has been somewhat put on the back-burner.

However we’re hoping that Konami can either remaster the original games or reboot the series entirely for PS5 - and it may happen according to these rumors. With Capcom having such success with its Resident Evil Remakes, we’re hoping Konami is spurred on to bring Silent Hill to the next generation.

The Legend of Dragoon

The Legend of Dragoon

While Final Fantasy 7 soaked up all the glory as the PlayStation One’s golden child, RPG fans from that era knew of another game that rivaled - and even surpassed - Square’s tale of oversized weapon wielders: The Legend of Dragoon.

Why The Legend of Dragoon deserves a remaster is because it mixed a rhythm-based attack system with elemental types in a four disc odyssey that brought the original PlayStation to the pinnacle of its performance. With stunning 2D vistas, incredible CGI sequences and hours upon hours of dialogue, The Legend of Dragoon was a technical marvel of the era and desperately needs to be retold on next-gen consoles.

Croc

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos

It’s a crying shame that we haven’t had a Croc remaster yet. The charming, backpack-wielding reptile may not be as popular as the likes of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, and to many it may be considered yet another forgettable 3D platformer, but the Croc franchise is still an integral PlayStation game for many.

With other 3D platformer remasters showing that the genre can still have life on modern-day consoles, we think that Croc deserves to see a bit of that limelight on PS5. If not as a remaster then maybe a reboot utilizing the PS5’s power could merge the modern and the classic. We could also be totally wrong, we just really like Croc.

Dino Crisis

Dino Crisis

Now, this one actually does look likely. Well, kind of. A recent leak suggests that Capcom is planning on rebooting the Dino Crisis franchise and, while that would be great, we can’t help wanting to see a remaster of the original too.

Dino Crisis is a bit like Resident Evil meets Jurassic Park, with the premise being that you are a special operations agent who is trying to escape a secluded island research facility that has been overrun by deadly dinosaurs.

Personally, we think there’s not enough of this sort of cheesy horror game nowadays. Actually, there’s not really a huge number of great horror games coming out full stop. So why not return to this tried and tested method? It worked for Resident Evil 2. Think that Tyrannosaurus rex scared the dickens out of you back then? Imagine what it would be like with PS5 power.

Ape Escape

Ape Escape

Ok, so we know that Ape Escape isn’t the greatest of games, but it sure is fun. Trapping mischievous apes in a net? Yes, please. Well, whether you want it or not, there’s been teases that Ape Escape will be making a comeback - but whether that’s on PS5 remains to be seen.

So why do we want an Ape Escape remaster? Well, it’s the perfect family game. While us adults may be focusing on what we want for the PS5, we need to remember it’s not just us who will be playing. And while Ape Escape could appeal to a number of us with its nostalgic value, in reality, it could appeal more to a younger generation who may see the same fun to be had in chasing down naughty primates as we did in our youth.

Gex

Gex

Gex may have originally been released for the 3DO, but it’s the PlayStation version that we remember best. The television-obsessed Gecko (with a major attitude) was Crystal Dynamics’ mascot for a long time and we would love to see him return next-gen.

While you may mistakenly see Gex as just another platformer series, it’s the character himself that is the draw. His wise-cracking remarks add a big dose of funny to the games and we would love to hear what he has to say about modern pop culture crazes like Netflix, social media and flossing.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Another Crystal Dynamics success, Soul Reaver was a very ambitious game for its time. And while it is still considered one of the PlayStation’s best games, combining stunning graphics with challenging puzzles. Imagine what it could look like on PlayStation 5?

The whole gothic concept even feels like it would sit perfectly on Sony’s next-gen console. You play as a vampire-turned-wraith Raziel, who has been revived by an Elder God to seek revenge on the vampire lieutenant who slayed him, shifting between spectral plains to solve puzzles and hacking and slashing your way through anyone who stands in your way. If there’s one game that Sony should definitely bring to the PS5, we think it’s Soul Reaver.

Time Crisis

Time Crisis 3

You may know Time Crisis from your local arcade but it was ported to PlayStation in 1997 alongside a lightgun so gamers could enjoy the first-person rail shooter from the comfort of their own home.

This may seem like an odd choice as the rail shooter genre is arguably cheesy and out-dated, but we think it could work well on PSVR 2 - which is likely to be released for PS5. With a bit of an update to the controls, and the graphics, Time Crisis could make a new (more modern) home in VR.

Tenchu

Tenchu 2

If you thought games like Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice were difficult, then you obviously don’t remember Tenchu. Whereas a lot of other Ninja games have historically involved a lot of high-octane action – think Ninja Gaiden – Tenchu took things in a different direction.

Rather than arming you with a sword and asking you to create as much gore as possible, Tenchu was all about stealth, and it was not forgiving. We never finished this game, our young brains completely incapable of handling the steep challenge. But in a world where punishing difficulty is rewarded, Tenchu would fit right in.

Parasite Eve

Parasite Eve

If the success of Resident Evil 2 Remake teaches us anything, it’s that we need more japanese horror in our modern gaming libraries - and Parasite Eve is just the ticket. Based on the Japanese science-fiction novel of the same name, Parasite Eve mixes role-playing mechanics with survival horror to make one of the most unique games of the era.

While we’re happy with the momentum that Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 Remake have given the horror genre, we’d love to see Parasite Eve’s unique blend of icky body horror and swift action gameplay revived for the next generation of gaming. It’s high time that zombies took a backseat to some of the weirder styles of horror we grew up with.

Latest Apple results show hardware is still king

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 04:24 AM PST

Aside from the obvious headlines, Apple’s results can be difficult to decipher. In its most recent quarter, it delivered record sales in excess of $91 billion and profits of $22 billion – figures that beat analyst predictions and sent the company’s share price soaring.

Given Apple started the year with its first revenue decline since 2016, it’s a remarkable turnaround. But figuring out what has caused this upturn is a more challenging task that leaves us reliant on educated guesses and insight from industry observers.

That the iPhone 11 contributed to the record results is obvious, with iPhone sales increasing from $52 billion to $56 billion over the past 12 months. It’s also possible to see that Mac sales have fallen by 3.5 per cent, while iPad revenues are down 11.2 per cent.

Apple hardware revival

However the use of the wide-ranging ‘Wearables, Home and Accessories’ and ‘Services’ categories makes it difficult to identify the sources of growth and the overall success of Apple’s pivot toward services.

Slowing smartphone sales caused by market saturation, intense competition, and longer refresh recycles had led Apple to invest significantly in Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Arcade.

The idea was that if Apple could get existing customers to spend more on services, especially subscriptions, the need to encourage device upgrades would become less prominent. Apple would also be more insulated against market conditions and there would be less pressure to innovate.

Services revenue is up again, this time by 16.9 per cent to $12.7 billion. But because Apple doesn’t break down this figure, it’s difficult to see how each service is contributing to this goal. Is this App Store revenue or is Apple Music bringing home the bacon?

These results suggest hardware is still king. Apple responded to the confusing nomenclature of the iPhone XS / XR range by making the entry level iPhone 11 its flagship device. On top of this, it included camera technology that was a match for anything on the market. It’s no surprise that sales are up.

‘Wearables, Home and Accessories’ revenue increased by a staggering 37 per cent to $10 billion – however it is impossible to get an official figure on individual product lines. It is thought that the affordability of AirPods and Apple Watch devices has contributed significantly, leaving the performance of the Apple HomePod and Apple TV – devices positioned as vehicles for Apple Music and Apple TV+ subscriptions - a mystery.

There’s no doubt that Apple’s services strategy will likely bear fruit in the future, encouraging loyalty in a subscription-based economy. Indeed, Apple’s new services are priced aggressively in order to establish market share, fend off competition, and guard against subscription fatigue.

New iPhone purchases are also rewarded with a free year of AppleTV+ and Apple CFO Luca Maestri has declared revenues so far to be “immaterial.” Deferred revenues and greater market traction will see services income rise significantly over the next 12 months.

But after a difficult period, exacerbated by economic conditions, it appears as though the formula for hardware growth was as simple as innovation and greater affordability.

Specs for the upcoming Moto G Stylus revealed in leaks

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:00 AM PST

Based on a growing number of rumors and leaks, it seems very much like Motorola is planning to launch a phone with a stylus in the not-too-distant future. The most recent leak gives us a full rundown of the handset's specs.

XDA Developers has the scoop, courtesy of a source familiar with what Motorola is planning, and the first revelation is the name – this phone is indeed going to be part of the mid-range G family, and will be called the Moto G Stylus.

The specs are similar to the Moto G8 Power that's also on the way: we've got a 6.36-inch, 2,300 x 1,080 pixel display (with a punch-hole camera), a Snapdragon 665 processor, 4GB of RAM and at least 64GB of internal storage. The battery size is said to be 4,000mAh.

Then there's a triple-lens rear camera around the back – 48MP + 16MP + 2MP – which does the Action Cam trick we've seen from Motorola before, where horizontal videos can be shot even when the phone is in portrait mode.

Jack in the box

Rounding out the specs we're apparently looking at Android 10 on board, 10W charging, and a fingerprint scanner around the rear, as per the source. And then there's the stylus, of course, which is the key selling point of this particular model.

That stylus slots in at the bottom of the phone apparently, and the slot is joined by a USB-C port, a speaker, and a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom of the device (something of a rarity on smartphones these days).

A few software extras will let users take notes or launch apps with the stylus, and even keep track of where the stylus is – if you misplace it, the phone will tell you when it was last removed from its internal slot.

So when can we expect to see this mid-range, stylus-equipped phone from Motorola? MWC 2020 seems like a good bet, which gets underway on February 24 (with press days beforehand), but for now pricing and a launch date remain something of a mystery.

Kia ProCeed GT: enough bang for your buck to be a serious consideration

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 03:00 AM PST

The Kia ProCeed aims to provide good looks, versatility, and agility in one relatively affordable package.

Aimed mainly at couples and young families, there’s plenty of luggage space plus enough room for two adults, along with a couple of kids in the back.

The base model of the ProCeed starts at £24,290, but we got behind the wheel of the almost top-of-the-range GT 1.6 T-GDi, which will set you back £28,285.

That puts the ProCeed in a competitive place, under-cutting the big names with only a few compromises along the way.

Kia ProCeed GT design and drive

The Kia ProCeed GT is long and low, providing a sporty look which hints that this particular car isn’t a slouch. It has a more aggressive stance than its sibling, the Kia Sportswagon, which provides it with a more professional, premium air compared to the more practical Sportswagon.

Pop yourself into the driving seat, and the sports seats ensure you feel comfortably nestled in position. Headroom is at a bit of a premium, although we (189cm/6ft 2) were able to sit up once we’d put the seat in its lowest position.

Up front there’s ample room for driver and passenger, with the addition of heated seats and a heated steering wheel proving very welcome during the winter months.

The interior is functional rather than fashionable. There are splashes of leather on the door panels and parts of the dash, but there’s still a plentiful amount of plastic, and the controls lack the premium aesthetic finesse of those in the likes of Audis, BMWs and co. However, considering the price of the ProCeed it’s hardly an issue.

Something which is a little more frustrating is rear visibility. The rear window has been formed at a sweeping angle, to allow for a sportier look on the exterior, but this has led to a limited view when glancing in the rear view mirror.

It’s worse for taller drivers, where the angles don’t work out particularly well - while shorter drivers will get a slightly better line of sight. The wing mirrors are a good size though, and when it comes to parking a reversing camera is present to help guide - more on that later.

Press your foot on the brake and hit the Start/Stop button sneakily hidden just behind the wheel and the 1.6 litre engine rumbles to life, with a noticeable idle exhaust note.

Slide the automatic 7-speed gearbox to drive and you can pull away smoothly, with the ProCeed moving up the gears well. It does complain a little if you plant the accelerator at low speeds as it looks for traction, but if you’re a little softer it will glide up the ratios without a fuss.

The ride is noticeably stiff however, and you’ll feel the various lumps and bumps in the road surface. It’s not uncomfortable as such, but we’ve had smoother rides.

Things get even stiffer when you press the Sport button next to the shifter, but the exhaust also gets raspier, which is always nice when you want to have a bit of fun. You’ll feel the force of the turbo a little more in Sport mode, and there’s a paddle shift option if you want to have a little manual control between the gears.

Get out into the country a little and the ProCeed provides its moments of fun, staying relatively tight around corners and with enough pick-up and exhaust noise to keep you engaged on the straights.

It’s not going to win any drag races with a 0-62mph time of 7.2 seconds, but it’s far from a slouch, and the ProCeed tops out at 140mph.

You can cruise easily on motorways, and the adaptive cruise control is easy to use with on-wheel controls and the ability to set the distance between yourself and the car in front, with the ProCeed automatically slowing and accelerating with the leading vehicle.

Paired with lane assist, which keeps you in lane, the Kia ProCeed can be a relaxing way to burn through long journeys.

Kia ProCeed GT specs and tech

The Kia ProCeed GT has tech such as auto lights, auto wipers and climate control, but the main focus when it comes to technology is the 10.25-inch touchscreen display which sits atop the centre console.

Kia’s interface is simple to use, quick to load, and the screen is responsive to the touch, making interaction easy. The built-in sat-nav works well and relays directions to the 4.2-inch colour screen in the instrument cluster for safer, at-a-glance route checking.

This small display can show a host of different things, including fuel consumption, trip stats, tyre pressure, speed, and driver aides, plus it has a menu of various settings for more driving functions and car setup features.

Back to the larger display and you have access to DAB digital radio, and there’s also the option to pair your phone via Bluetooth and stream music from your handset to the car’s JBL speaker setup.

For those who want greater smartphone control, you can connect your iPhone or Android handset to the Kia ProCeed via the USB port hidden under a sliding cover in front of the gear shift.

This allows you to take advantage of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, giving you access to apps such as Apple Maps, Google Maps, Messages and Spotify - all from the touchscreen of the ProCeed.

Pop the Kia ProCeed into reverse and the view from the rear-facing camera is shown on-screen, with guidelines helping you navigate the car into parking spaces, along with parking sensors all the way around the car alerting you when you’re getting a little too close to other objects.

While it’s useful to have, it’s not the highest resolution camera we’ve seen on a car and it struggles in low light to provide a clear picture.

Overall though, the Kia ProCeed GT is well equipped and should satisfy most drivers with a penchant for tech options. It may not be the most premium, or powerful, in its class, but the compromises are few and far between, ensuring you still get plenty of bang for you buck.

Intel Core i9-10900K 10-core CPU spotted in 3DMark with 5.1GHz boost

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 02:30 AM PST

Intel’s Core i9-10900K, the firm’s incoming flagship chip for Comet Lake desktop CPUs, has been spotted in 3DMark, revealing that it will boost to 5.1GHz.

The processor is listed in the 3DMark database and was uncovered by @_rogame on Twitter, with a reported base clock of 3.7GHz.

So, assuming this leak is correct, we’ve now got a glimpse of how the 10900K will run, albeit without any details of the power consumption – as you can see in the tweet above, that isn’t listed (some of the details are missing).

The Core i9-10900K is a 10-core (20-thread) processor, and the 5.1GHz boost result is in line with previous rumors, adding a little more weight to the possibility that it’s on the money.

Remember that 5.1GHz is purportedly the single-core boost, of course, and it won’t be able to hit this speed across all 10-cores. However, previous speculation has pointed to Intel reaching a little higher in terms of Turbo with Thermal Velocity Boost technology, which could hit 5.3GHz (on one core – if the CPU is running cool enough).

Don’t be dazzled

While the big numbers might be dazzling, those beefy boosts will be situational, and there’s a limit to how long they can be maintained for. A lot will depend on the cooling solution used with the processor (and related issues like case airflow), of course, and the power consumption of Intel’s next-gen chips is certainly something that has been a cause for concern looking at recent chatter online.

And rightly so, really, given that one of the other major rumors around Comet Lake desktop chips is that their delay – they were a no-show at CES in January, despite firm expectations that Intel would be unveiling something – might be down to struggles with power usage, specifically with the flagship 10900K.

That wouldn’t exactly be a surprise, either, given the power demands of the existing Core i9-9900K as it is, and the fact that Intel will surely be struggling at this point to squeeze more performance juice out of continually refining 14nm.

Still, perhaps this sighting of the 10900K means that the Comet Lake desktop range won’t be as delayed as the rumor mill has recently been indicating – which is definitely important for Intel given that Ryzen 4000 is on the horizon, promising a major performance uplift, possibly to the tune of 20%.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip release date, news and leaks

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 01:00 AM PST

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Samsung has not one but two (or more) foldable phones in the works, because as well as a proper successor to the Samsung Galaxy Fold (which for now we’re calling the Galaxy Fold 2), the company is also heavily rumored to be working on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

While it’s possible that this is the Fold 2 in all but name, it sounds very different to the Galaxy Fold, with a likely different, smaller form factor and a lower price. Plus, some sources specifically suggest that both are in the works, so we’re treating it as a different device.

Below then you’ll find all the news and rumors that specifically seem to be talking about the Galaxy Z Flip, along with those which could be talking about either phone. And make sure to check back here regularly, as we'll update this article whenever we hear anything new.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? Samsung's next foldable phone
  • When is it out? Possibly February 11
  • What will it cost? Rumors suggest around $1,400 (roughly £1,075 / AU$2,075)

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip release date and price

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will probably be announced on February 11. That’s when Samsung is holding its big smartphone event for the first half of the year and where we’re expecting to see the Samsung Galaxy S20 range, so it’s an obvious candidate.

It’s also something we’ve heard from a leaker, who added that the phone would be available to buy from February 14.

However, that’s not the only possible announcement date. The Galaxy Z Flip could alternatively land at MWC 2020, which takes place at the end of February. That has also been put forward by a source, albeit in an earlier leak.

And yet another source has said to expect a new Samsung foldable in April, but this claim is older still. Further confusing matters is that some of these sources could be talking about the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2, as that will probably also land sometime this year.

With all that in mind, our best guess is February 11, as the most recent leak points to that date, and it’s also the only one to mention the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip by name.

As for what the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will cost, the same source as the February 11 announcement date said to expect a price of $1,400 (roughly £1,075 / AU$2,075), while earlier leaks (linked above) point to either 1,000,000 Korean Won (around $835 / £640 / AU$1,230), or roughly $1,500 (around £1,165 / AU$2,200).

We’re skeptical of the lowest of those prices, but the other two options sound believable, as well as being similar. Any of those would make it cheaper than the $1,980 / £1,900 / AU$2,900 Samsung Galaxy Fold though, which makes sense, as the Z Flip is rumored to be a bit less of a flagship.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip design and display

Our clearest look yet at the likely design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip can be seen below. This leaked image shows a phone that looks a lot like the Samsung Galaxy S10… if the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S10 could be folded in half.

It’s a design that we’ve also seen in an image supposedly leaked from a Samsung presentation, though notably there the phone was referred to as the Samsung Galaxy Bloom, which is likely its code name.

Elsewhere we’ve heard that the phone will have a clamshell-like design, which would match the images above.

As for the screen, several sources have now said it’s a 6.7-inch one, which would make it smaller than the 7.3-inch Galaxy Fold. The most detailed of these leaks adds that the display has a 1,080 x 2,636 resolution and a 22:9 aspect ratio.

Another leak adds that it will have a Dynamic AMOLED screen and that there will be a fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone.

As with so much about the phone, some of the earlier leaks linked above refer to it as the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2, but we now believe they were talking about the Z Flip, as the leaks line up with recent leaks that mention the Galaxy Z Flip by name.

We’ve also heard multiple times that the Galaxy Z Flip will use ‘Ultra Thin Glass’, sometimes referred to as UTG. This could make the device slimmer, but is likely to have plastic layered over the top to make it more durable.

The phone is said to also have a small screen that’s visible when the main display is folded shut. This is apparently a 1.06-inch 116 x 300 one, so will probably mostly just be used for checking the time and notifications.

But you won’t be limited to just having the main screen open or closed, as you can apparently also lock it at 90 degrees, using the bottom half of the screen like a stand. You can see how this would apparently look in the tweet below.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip specs

The latest significant specs leak points to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip having a Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, with no microSD card slot, no 5G, and no 3.5mm headphone port.

The most notable thing there is that chipset, which while being one of the best in any phone at the time of writing, is likely to be superseded by the chipsets in most of the early 2020 flagships, including the Galaxy S20. So including it here marks the Galaxy Z Flip out as a slightly lower end phone, despite the inevitably high price.

That’s not totally unheard of though, as the Motorola Razr takes a similar approach. In fact, that phone’s chipset is positively mid-range. And while big name foldables are always likely to be expensive for now, using a lesser chipset can help keep the cost below astronomical levels.

Elsewhere we’ve heard that the Galaxy Z Flip might even just have a standard Snapdragon 855 chipset, rather than the Plus version. That seems less likely, but could reduce the price even further.

The Galaxy Z Flip is likely to have fewer lenses than the Galaxy Fold, above

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip camera and battery

The only camera leaks that refer specifically to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip state that it will have a dual-lens 12MP main camera, with both standard and wide-angle lenses, while the front camera might be a 10MP one.

Elsewhere we’ve heard mention of a 108MP sensor paired with a zoom lens, but that’s probably headed for the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 if anything, since that’s likely to be more of a flagship.

As for the battery, that’s rumored to be 3,300mAh, which would put it on the small side. It apparently supports 15W charging, which is ‘fast’ but nowhere near as fast as some phones.

It’s also said to support wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. Most of this battery information comes from just one source though, so we’d take it with an extra helping of salt.

Sofia Kenin vs Garbine Muguruza live stream: watch Australian Open Women's Final tennis online from anywhere

Posted: 01 Feb 2020 12:50 AM PST

Today's Australian Open Women's Final brings together a pairing few would have predicted a fortnight ago. It's set to be a fascinating final that you'll be able to watch as it happens from anywhere in the world with our Kenin v Muguruza live stream guide.

Spanish star Garbine Muguruza may be a former Roland-Garros and Wimbledon champion, but the 26-year-old came into the tournament unseeded with little expectation of a decent run in Melbourne. While Sofia Kenin was at least ranked as a 14th seed, Saturday's match will be her maiden Grand Slam final, an achievement that few would have expected.

Muguruza has beaten three top 10 seeds on the way to the final, the most impressive of those will likely be her shock win over the in-form world number four Simona Halep.

Kenin broke the home crowd's hearts by knocking out Australia’s Ash Barty in their semi-final clash, in a close straight-sets win over the world number one.

The only previous tour-level meeting between the two finalists saw Kenin beat Muguruza at last year's China Open, which the 21-year-old won 6-0, 2-6, 6-2.

Don't miss a moment  of the 2020 Australian Open Women's Final by following our Kenin vs Muguruza live stream guide below - it doesn't even matter where on Earth you are.
