Microsoft’s Project xCloud could arrive on Windows 10 any day now

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:31 PM PDT

It looks like Microsoft is gearing up to release Project xCloud for PC devices, with an announcement potentially scheduled for as early as next week.

Though Microsoft confirmed last year that its game streaming service will be coming to Windows 10, Project xCloud - which is still in beta - currently only lets you stream games on Android and iOS devices.

That might not be the case for much longer, as Xbox chief Phil Spencer appears to already be playing with xCloud on PC at home.

Reddit user ‘An Xbox Dude’, who claims to be pals with Spencer, snapped an image of the Xbox head honcho playing something called “Xbox Game Streaming (Test App)”, which certainly looks like an xCloud solution for playing high-end games on low-powered Windows devices.

This is hardly surprising. Back in November, Microsoft confirmed that it would be bringing xCloud to Windows PCs at some point this year, saying: "Next year, we'll bring Project xCloud to Windows 10... and are collaborating with a broad set of partners to make game streaming available on other devices as well."

It also announced that 2020 will also bring the option to play any games you own, along with Xbox Game Pass titles, through the streaming service.

What to expect when you're x-pecting

While unsurprising, the Reddit post is likely a sign that xCloud is coming to Windows 10 sooner rather than later. Microsoft could show off the PC solution as early next week, as though GDC has been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, the company is promising to talk about its cloud gaming service during a ‘Game Stack Live’ live stream on March 18 titled ‘Xbox Series X + Project xCloud = A New Chapter in Gaming.’

If so, Microsoft will also likely cough on what type of performance PC gamers can expect from the service; xCloud is currently limited to a 720p resolution, which while fine on a handheld Android or iOS device, is unlikely to hold-up on high-resolution laptops and monitor setups.

The seemingly imminent arrival xCloud for PC will be exciting news to many, especially given the stability and performance issues its main rival, Google Stadia, has been suffering. Microsoft has taken a different approach to Google with a slow and steady rollout, and this appears to be paying off.

Disruptions increase as organizations manage more data

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 11:58 AM PDT

Organizations on average are managing almost 40 percent more data than they were a year ago according to new research from Dell Technologies and this surge in data comes with inherent challenges.

To compile its new Global Data Protection Index 2020 Snapshot, the company surveyed 1,000 IT decision makers at public and private organizations with 250+ employees from 15 different countries to learn more about how these challenges impact their data protection readiness.

The findings from Dell's survey show that an increasing number of organizations (80% in 2019 up from 74% in 2018) now see the value in their data. President of Dell Technologies Data Protection Beth Phalen explained why data protection strategies will be essential to businesses in the next data decade in a press release, saying:

“Data is the lifeblood of business and the key to an organization’s digital transformation. As we enter the next data decade, resilient, reliable and modern data protection strategies are essential in helping businesses make smarter, faster decisions and combat the effects of costly disruptions. These findings prove that data protection needs to be central to a company’s business strategy. As the data landscape grows more complex, organizations need nimble, sustainable data protection strategies that can scale in a multi-platform, multi-cloud world.”

With more data comes increased disruptions

According to Dell's study, organizations are now managing 13.53PB of data which marks a nearly 40 percent increase from 2018 when the average was 9.70PB and an 831 percent increase since organizations were managing 1.45PB of data in 2016.

Cyberattacks, data loss and system downtime are the largest threats to all of this data and the majority of organizations (82%) suffered a disruptive event during the course of the last 12 months. Additionally, 68 percent of organizations fear they will experience a disruptive event in the next 12 months.

The study also found that organizations which are using more than one data protection vendor are approximately two times more vulnerable to a cyber incident that prevents access to their data. However, the use of multiple data protection solutions is on the rise with 80 percent of organizations choosing to deploy solutions from two or more providers.

The cost of disruption is also increasing and the average cost of downtime surged by 54 percent from 2018 to 2019, resulting in an estimated loss of $819k in 2019. These costs are also significantly higher for organizations using more than one data protection vendor.

While disruption can have serious negative effects for any business, the likelihood that organizations will suffer data loss, system downtime and cyberattacks will likely only increase as companies continue to manage even more data.

How coronavirus is affecting TV and movies so far, from Tom Hanks to Fast 9

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 10:52 AM PDT

The world around us is changing quickly right now, as the coronavirus pandemic spreads across the planet. Containing the virus and ensuring the safety of other people has to come first. Numerous industries have changed course because of Covid-19 – MWC 2020 in Barcelona was canceled, and GDC and E3's cancellation mean gaming faces a quiet year for events.

In TV and film, the effects are now becoming more and more obvious, with movies like Fast and Furious 9, No Time To Die, A Quiet Place Part 2 and Peter Rabbit 2 all changing release dates to either later in 2020 or 2021. This is sure to have a painful effect on theater businesses.

This isn't just about release dates moving, though – it's starting to affect the production of TV and film, as you'd expect. Tom Hanks is the highest-profile celebrity to test positive for coronavirus so far, and he was diagnosed as he was filming an Elvis biopic in Australia – that's now on hold, as you'd expect. TV show productions are shutting down as well, and in the coming months, we're only going to see more examples of this as coronavirus spreads.

Here's a summary of how coronavirus has affected TV and movies so far.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have coronavirus and are in self-isolation

Actor Tom Hanks posted the update above from Australia on March 12, revealing he and wife Rita Wilson tested positive for coronavirus. "To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive," Hanks said, adding that he'll keep people updated on his progress.

Hanks was filming an Elvis Presley biopic directed by Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby), and Warner Bros told Indiewire that filming has been put on hold for now.

No Time To Die, A Quiet Place 2, Fast and Furious 9 and Peter Rabbit 2 are all delayed by coronavirus

Movie release dates are dropping quickly, as the reality of reduced theater attendance is beginning to hit. No Time To Die's release date moved from April to November and A Quiet Place Part 2 has been delayed as well. Meanwhile, the less exciting Peter Rabbit 2 moved from March to August.

The biggest move yet came with Fast and Furious 9, though, which will now release in April 2021, almost a year after its original May 22 release date. No word on Black Widow moving yet – its final trailer released earlier this week, and said it's still coming out in early May.

This is a developing situation, obviously, and the world could look very different in a few weeks. Theaters are communal spaces, more likely to be avoided for the time being to stop the spread of the virus.

China, a massive market for blockbusters, is basically closed for business. China closed all of its 70,000+ theaters in late January. This means numerous movies like Sonic the Hedgehog just can't release in the market – and Mulan, scheduled for March 27, is surely at risk.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier halted filming in Prague

Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was filming in Prague this week, but production has been halted according to a Deadline report, with cast and crew recalled back to Atlanta. The show debuts in August, and there's been no indication it'll affect the release date.

Actor Sebastian Stan reacted to the move on Instagram. "We've been shooting The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and experiencing one of the most beautiful cities in the world filled with the most wonderful and welcoming people. Now we are being sent home. Too soon. Prague, you’re gonna be in my thoughts for a long time. Thank you. Will be back. Thinking of you."

Sports events are being critically hit by coronavirus

Expect more to be canceled or delayed, but next week's Manchester City vs Real Madrid Champions League tie has been postponed, after the Real Madrid squad went into quarantine over coronavirus concerns. Juventus vs Lyon has also been delayed. The UK government is considering banning sporting fixtures altogether, according to the BBC

The NBA season has been suspended. The NFL, though, has said it won't delay the start of the league on March 18.

Football/soccer leagues in Italy, Portugal, Spain, the USA and the Netherlands have been suspended (for 30 days, in the case of the MLS). The Australian GP has been 'called off' according to the BBC, and tennis tournament ATP has been bumped back by six weeks.

Expect the cancelations to keep stacking up.

Numerous productions have been put on hold, including Mission Impossible 7

Production of The CW teen drama Riverdale has been temporarily put on hold, as one of its 'team members' is being tested for coronavirus. EW reported that US reality show Survivor has delayed production as well, which joins fellow long-running reality series The Amazing Race in being put on hold.

Filming on Mission Impossible 7 in Venice, Italy was stopped in late February.

The Grand Tour will probably be delayed

The next episode of The Grand Tour season 4 is imminent, but there might be a longer wait after that. Host Jeremy Clarkson has suggested on Twitter that the virus is holding up filming on more specials, which require international travel.

Most of your data is held by companies you don't even know

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 10:30 AM PDT

New research from the startup Mine has revealed that 83 percent of an average person's data is held by companies they have only interacted with once. At the same time though, almost a third (32%) of the data in a person's digital footprint didn't even require users to open an account to store their information.

Mine is a new startup that aims to give people back ownership of their personal data online and the company launched in Europe back in January.

The company also discovered that most people's data is held by 350 companies, though the top five percent of its users with the largest digital footprints discovered that an average of 2,834 companies had access to their data. This number then grows for all users by an average of eight new companies per month.

Of Mime's users, 90 percent were shocked by the size of their digital footprint as many guessed it would be just half the size. Surprisingly, just 17 percent of an average person's digital footprint contains digital services which they use frequently with the top five being Microsoft, YouTube, Netflix, PayPal and Spotify.

Taking your data back

Mine helps people take their data back from online services by automating a right to be forgotten request which companies have to comply with in 30 days under GDPR. Since its launch, the company has discovered that the businesses receiving the most requests were those in the technology, shopping and travel sectors.

According to Mine, the companies with the fastest response times are Zoom, Uniqlo, Pocket, ManpowerGroup and Trainline. However, technology companies, which receive the most right to be forgotten requests, seem to be the least responsive with only five percent of data erasure requests completed so far.

Research conducted by Mine also found that many people have lost faith in data privacy with 92 percent of those surveyed saying they feel uncomfortable about the number of companies that collect their data. Worryingly, 88 percent of respondents believe that giving up one's privacy is just the cost for using the internet.

Co-founder and CEO of Mine, Gal Ringel explained that consumers need to be able to take back their data from companies once their relationship has ended, saying:

“The fact so many people have used Mine to reclaim their data in our first month confirms our belief that instead of talking about data privacy we need to shift our mindsets to strive for data ownership. Any form of online experience isn’t possible without sharing our data so trying to cloak our online presence isn’t a solution, it’s only avoiding the problem.

“Rather, with regulations such as the GDPR, CCPA and LGPD giving consumers more rights over their data, we should rather be empowered to share our data with companies when needed but also to be able to take it back when our exchange with that company has concluded. It’s an exciting time because as we see more people take back control of their data, we have high hopes that this will transform the relationship between consumers and digital services to become one that is significantly more equal.”

Best 360 camera 2020: 10 cameras to capture everything

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 10:22 AM PDT

Looking for the best 360 camera? You've come to the right place. If, like Aerosmith, you don’t want to miss a thing, these cameras are exactly what you need: each of the models in this list is capable of capturing footage in full 360-degrees.

Most work by using multiple camera modules – usually two wide-angle lenses back-to-back – to capture footage which can then be digitally combined into a fully spherical video or, more usefully, into a standard two-dimensional video weaved together from frames that you've chosen after the fact.

That said, there are plenty of differences between them. Features to consider include automatic stitching (which saves you the hassle of manually aligning multiple captures), image stabilization, live-streaming and resolution, which in some cases goes higher than 5K. It’s worth remembering, though, that even a relatively high resolution won’t necessarily result in detailed images: because pixels are stretched over a 360-degree frame, the small part you’re viewing might well be less than Full HD.

Also look at cropping functionality, which allows you to extract a standard ‘flat’ video from the 360-degree footage you’ve captured. This means you can shoot everything that’s going on and select your area of focus when you're back home – particularly useful for fast-moving and unpredictable subjects, such as safari animals of extreme sports enthusiasts.

The relevance of other features, such as GPS, Wi-Fi and slow-mo modes, will depend on what and how you like to record. Helpfully, we’ve accounted for all of this in our list of the best 360 cameras. Some are the latest and greatest models, while others are a little older but priced very competitively. And don’t forget that our widgets always display the latest and best deals too.

Best 360 cameras 2020 at a glance:

  1. Insta360 One X
  2. GoPro Max
  3. Insta360 Evo
  4. Insta360 One R
  5. HumanEye Vuze XR
  6. GoPro Fusion
  7. Insta360 One
  8. Ricoh Theta V
  9. Samsung Gear 360
  10. Garmin Virb 360

Best 360 camera 2020:

Producing great video is about two things; capturing the action, and slick editing. So what if you could do both with an action camera and an app? With dual fisheye lenses and some unique time and perspective-manipulation special effects, the One X is making a play for the title of most full-featured action camera around. What we love about the One X isn't its 360° tricks at all, but how easy it is to produce a great-looking regular widescreen video. Kudos in particular to the silky smooth image stabilisation, which all goes to make it a tempting proposition for semi-pro videographers looking for some unique special effects on-the-fly.

If you're looking to shoot 360-degree videos of sporting escapades or outdoor adventures, then the GoPro Max is the best option around. Unlike the Insta360 One X, it's waterproof down to five meters without needing a case, and the editing workflow is slick and simple. If you want to turn your 360-degree video into a traditional 2D film – which is one of the main benefits of 360 cams – the app's OverCapture software lets you do this easily, as long as your happy with the final footage being in Full HD. The Max also amps up many of the features seen on the GoPro Hero 8 Black, including superior HyperSmooth stabilization and 360-degree TimeWarp sequences. The slightly sub-par 2D video footage (which is the result of it being converted from a fish-eye images) means the Max falls short of being the ultimate GoPro for both 360 and standard footage. But it's a fantastic option for anyone who wants to shoot action sequences in every direction without the hassle of deciding where to point their action camera, then edit it together quickly later.

Insta360 Evo

It might not have the elegant, pocket-friendly design of Insta360’s One X, but the Evo is a more flexible form of 360-degree camera. One minute it can function as a standard 360-degree camera with back-to-back fisheye lenses capturing everything around it in decent 5.7K resolution. The next moment, thanks to its hinged design, both lenses will be sitting side by side facing the same direction, allowing them to capture 3D VR content with a 180-degree field-of-view. You’ll really need an Oculus or similar VR headset to appreciate the latter, however – and for most people the One X probably makes more sense.

Insta360 One R

The headline feature of the Insta360 One R is its modular design. Comprised of three blocks – battery, controls and camera – the lens section can be switched to suit your situation. Besides a 1-inch sensor module, the dual-lens element is seriously exciting: capable of capturing 360-degree footage in 5.7K at 30fps, it transforms the Insta360 One R from action cam to capable 360 cam. Stabilization is excellent, as is the stitching, with only a slight flutter if your crop covers the border between sources. Like the GoPro Max, sharpness drops at the edge of each lens, but results in bright conditions are good, with decent detail and limited noise. The same can’t be said in low light, where software processing issues arise, with lots of juddering and blurred frames. Editing 360-degree video means selecting and dragging one of five fields of view in the app, which is slightly limiting but ultimately quick, while optional subject-tracking delivers a professional look with minimal effort. It's not quite as slick as the GoPro Max, but it's cheaper, offers a unique modular approach and delivers solid 360-degree footage. With a few software fixes, the Insta360 One R could be a real 360 success.

HumanEyes Vuze XR

Thanks to its pop-out lenses, the Vuze XR is able to record both 360-degree and 3D VR videos. It’s a clever design and physically well implemented here thanks to the solidity of the hinge mechanism and springs. With the option to shoot video at 5.7K resolution, the camera’s image quality isn’t bad either. Unfortunately, the limited mobile app’s lack of editing features and the slightly janky nature of the desktop app make doing anything with your footage and photos more of a chore than it should be – and while the Vuze XR may have been the first camera to offer this two-pronged approach, it’s outperformed by the slightly slicker Insta360 Evo that followed closely in its wake.

GoPro’s highly innovative camera has enjoyed a significant price drop since its launch, making it worth considering if you can't stretch to the newer GoPro Max. The Fusion can capture 360-degree video in 5.2K resolution at 30fps (or 3K at 60fps) which is great, but its real trick was the introduction of the OverCapture mode. Like the GoPro Max and Insta360 One X, this lets you film in 360 degrees then create a standard 16:9 video from the footage. Add GPS, a compass, accelerometer, gyroscope, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3D audio, and compatibility with existing GoPro mounts, and the waterproof (to a depth of 5m) Fusion is a powerful camera for the price. The newer GoPro Max brings a front-facing screen, a more compact design, six microphones (rather than four) and better image stabilization. The Fusion's last software update was also over a year ago, if these issues don't bother you then it's definitely worth considering if you need a waterproof 360-degree camera.

No one in their right mind thinks 360° video is going to take over from regular video. Why else would the Insta360 One include FreeCapture, a mode that allows users to film in 360° before transforming the results into a traditional 16:9 aspect ratio? It's a little like the feature on the similarly 4K-capable GoPro Fusion, although that's where the comparison pretty much ends. A reliable 4K 360° camera for video and stills, the Insta360 One proffers another advanced tool in the shape of Bullet Time, a fast frame-rate slow-mo mode that, rather bizarrely, requires users to wave the camera rapidly around them on… a piece of string. It's odd, but effective – the slow-mo effect you can add this footage looks like something out of The Matrix. It comes with a tripod thread for remote shooting, too.

It was Ricoh that put 360° video creation into the mainstream with its Theta S a few years ago, but for all the brilliance of its form factor, it produced barely 25 minutes of rather soft video on one charge. The souped-up follow-up looks the same, but is capable of 4K video recording, 4K live streaming, and even records 360° spatial audio thanks to its four microphones – and for 80 minutes. Android-based and Qualcomm Snapdragon 625-powered, the Theta V vastly increases the ISO and has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so can be operated remotely via an app. Thankfully, it retains the standard tripod thread its forbear had.

With a similar form factor to Ricoh's Theta 360 cameras, this pocket-sized dual-lens shooter has been brought down a peg or two in terms of specs since Samsung decided it needed to help justify the existence of its own Gear VR. For example, while the original Gear 2016 captured 15MP still images, this new version achieves barely half that. It's also got a smaller battery, which means you're going to have to carry around a USB-C-compatible portable charger. Has Samsung gone off the whole idea of 360-degree cameras? Almost certainly, but the cute, splash-proof Gear 360 remains very easy to use, with plenty of free editing software, so if nothing else it helps make the new medium accessible.

It might be known mostly for its sat navs and sports watches, but Garmin has produced a whopping-good 360 camera. The feature that catches the eye on the VIRB 360 is its ability to capture in maximum 5.7K resolution, and there's a very simple reason for that awkward figure: 4K doesn't cover a 360 landscape well. Better yet, you can now stitch 5.7K footage using Garmin's free VIRB Edit software. Its four microphones produce wraparound sound, too, while waterproofing, GPS, a gyroscope and an accelerometer give it a notable Garmin feel (it collects data about your adventures as you go, which you can overlay onto your 360 videos).

You can find both of these contracts below in full. Or if neither of them suit what you need from a device, head to our best mobile phone deals guide to find a better suited offer.

The best iPhone XS deals around right now:

So what's so good about the iPhone XS and XR?

iPhone XS:
There was a good reason for the high cost of iPhone XS deals when it first launched. At the time, it was one of the best phones in the world and realistically, it's still up there.

Across the device, everything feels premium. Apple's near infinity OLED display with smart HDR looks stunning and its 2658mAh battery is a vast improvement on previous options. Although it hasn't been hugely improved on from the previous model it's about as high-end a phone as you can get right now and especially for this price.

Read our full iPhone XS review.

iPhone XR:
As one of the best iPhones currently on the market (even with the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro out!) there is a lot to love with the iPhone XR. Above everything, the battery really stands out. Before the launch of the iPhone 11, this was the biggest Apple battery at 2942 mAh.

Sporting Apple's Liquid Retina display and a powerful A12 Bionic chip, going for this more budget flagship doesn't have to mean taking a hit on specs.

An AMD Ryzen 4000 desktop APU has finally appeared in leaked benchmarks

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:48 AM PDT

Just days after a leak revealed that AMD Ryzen 4000 Renoir-based laptops could show up as soon as next week, benchmarks for a desktop-based variant have shown up online.

First off, it’s worth noting that this chip is a Zen 2-based Renior APU from the Ryzen 4000 series, rather than one of AMD’s upcoming dedicated desktop CPUs based on the Zen 3 architecture, so don’t go expecting it to deliver the same level of performance as Team Red’s incoming high-end SKUs.

Rather, the chip will offer a step-up compared to AMD’s existing 12nm Ryzen 3000G 'Picasso' chips. A leak courtesy of hardware leaker Rogame shows that the 7nm CPU will use the AM4 socket and will feature a base clock speed of 3.5GHz, while the onboard Radeon GPU is clocked at 1750MHz.

Though we don’t have any details on the core count and the number of threads of the Ryzen 4000 APU, it sports the same clock speed as the Ryzen 7 4800H and the Ryzen 9 4900H, suggesting the incoming APU will likely have a similar level of single-thread performance.

The chip managed to rack up an overall score of 5659 on 3DMark 11, where it was being tested in conjunction with a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro board. As per Notebookcheck, that means that, performance-wise, the chip falls short of the Ryzen 7 4700U on 5713 points and the Ryzen 7 4800U on 6309 points.

However, that could be due to the fact that the APU was paired with DDR4 RAM running operating at a lowly 2133MHz, as Renoir’s Zen 2 CPU architecture supports DDR4 RAM speeds of up 3200MHz. It’s likely that the benchmarks were also carried out on an engineering sample that isn’t yet running to its full potential.

The incoming Ryzen 4000 APUs and B550 motherboards will likely be used in entry-level desktops and all-in-ones due to their integrated graphics capabilities, and if anything like AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series APUs, they’ll likely be unveiled at Computex 2020 in June.

Fast and Furious 9 release date delayed by coronavirus – what we know about the film so far

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:44 AM PDT

Fast and Furious 9 was set to be a huge deal in 2020. It was the biggest blockbuster in a year with no Star Wars or Avengers movies – but now it's been delayed until April 2021 over coronavirus concerns, around a year later than originally expected. Click here to scroll down to the official statement on the delay.

In the world of cinematic franchises, the Fast and Furious movies (officially known as the Fast Saga) are unique. For a start, unlike most other members of the multi-billion-dollar box office club they’re not really sci-fi or fantasy – though 2019 spin-off Hobbs & Shaw did cross the line with its cybernetically enhanced bad guy.

More importantly, however, the films have their own bizarre alchemy, an unlikely blend of very fast cars, elaborate heists and relationship drama that occasionally veers into soap opera territory. It’s a long stretch of road from where the franchise began with 2001’s The Fast and the Furious, a fun but unremarkable movie about street racers with a sideline in audacious auto-heists.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew of multi-talented drivers/tech experts return for Fast and Furious 9, the ninth of the series – or tenth if you include Hobbs & Shaw. Justin Lin, who directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth instalments in the long-running saga – and is described as an “architect” of the franchise by Diesel – is back behind the camera, having made a detour to the 23rd century for Star Trek Beyond.

You've now got a long wait ahead of you with the movie's new 2021 release date, but what can we expect when Fast and Furious 9 revs up? We’ve looked under the bonnet of the most souped-up film series on the planet to explain so you know what to expect.

Fast and Furious 9 release date delayed by coronavirus

Fast and Furious 9 (or F9 as it’s known in the United States) has been delayed for a full year until April 2, 2021 in the US, over coronavirus concerns. It's a drastic move, but it puts safety first, which is important right now. The official statement about the move can be seen above – as well as safety, it considers the fact that theaters may be closed where you are.

The original release date was May 22, 2020. The movie was originally set to get into gear in 2019, but was postponed a year – apparently at the request of Fast Saga star and producer Vin Diesel. “Like any vehicle that has run around the globe 8 times, the franchise is in need of maintenance,” Diesel told his Instagram feed in October 2017. “My good friend and the godfather of [distributor] Universal, Ron Meyer has granted me the time to do just that.”

Now, of course, we'll be waiting even longer.

Fast and Furious 9 trailer: first look at the movie

An epic Fast and Furious 9 trailer, running at nearly four minutes long, debuted on January 31, 2020. That's all we've seen of the movie so far.

It starts slow, with Diesel’s Dom Toretto retired to a quiet rural life with wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and Brian, the young son whose existence was revealed in Fast and Furious 8. “I used to live my life a quarter mile at a time,” Toretto says in voiceover. “But things change…”

This is the Fast Saga, however, so things don’t change that much, and it’s not long before we’re plunged back into some familiar high-octane action. There’s bus-top battles in Edinburgh, a Pontiac Fiero strapped to a rocket engine (yes, really), and cars flying off beautiful cliffs in Thailand – but don’t worry, there’s a “magnet plane” standing by to make sure at least one of them doesn’t go tumbling into the sea.

But beyond the usual four-wheeled stars, there’s set to be just as many fireworks between the humans. Most importantly, we meet Dom’s previously unmentioned younger brother Jakob (played by WWE wrestler and Bumblebee star John Cena), and it turns out there’s no love lost between the two siblings. So much so, in fact, that Jakob’s in league with cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron), the returning Big Bad who was revealed as the all-controlling Blofeld of the Fast Saga in Fast and Furious 8. She’s still very much at large...

“Your whole life you pushed yourself to be faster than Dom,” she tells Jakob. “Smarter than Dom. Stronger than Dom. But could you kill him? Because I’m ready if you are.”

But the trailer saves its biggest revelation for the end, as Han (Sung Kang) – presumed dead after his car was totalled by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift/Fast and Furious 6 – rejoins Toretto and his crew. Hands up who saw that one coming…

Fast & Furious 9 story: what’s revving up?

Aside from the fact it’ll feature familiar faces, very fast cars and the usual quasi-espionage shenanigans, the inner workings of Fast and Furious 9’s plot remain carefully under wraps. The taglines in the trailer offer up a couple of big clues, however.

“Justice is coming” could refer to several simmering revenge angles. Cipher clearly wants to get back at Dom for ‘betraying’ her in Fast and Furious 8, while Dom has plenty of beef with her – everything from masterminding the criminal schemes of the three previous movies to the cold-blooded murder of Elena Neves, the mother of his son. There’s also the not-so-small matter of Han’s ‘murder’ – though it it’ll be interesting to see who Han thinks is responsible, now that Deckard Shaw (driver of the offending car) has effectively been absorbed into Deckard’s crew.

But it’s the “Not all blood is family” line that’s set to have the biggest impact on the plot – not least because the adopted “family” Dom Toretto has built around himself is one of the main themes of the Fast Saga. His crew may not be blood relatives, but they’re every bit as tight-knit – much closer, it seems, than Dom is to the people he shares DNA with.

The Fast Saga suddenly introducing important relatives we’d heard nothing about is nothing new: Fast and Furious 6 antagonist Owen Shaw turned out to have an angry big bro called Deckard, while Dom Toretto learned he had a son in Fast and Furious 8. So it’s not that surprising that Dom should have a younger brother who’s gone unmentioned until now. Their father’s death in a stock car racing accident – and Dom’s subsequent revenge attack on the driver he blamed for the incident – is bound to be a major bone of contention. And then there’s the return of their younger sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster), to think about. Could she be a potential mediating factor between the Toretto boys?

After Hobbs & Shaw’s cyborg villain took the franchise into genuine sci-fi territory for the first time, we’re also wondering whether Fast & Furious 9 will follow suit. Beyond the now-traditional bending of the laws of physics, there’s nothing in the trailer to suggest that’s the case – though long-time Fast Saga writer Chris Morgan (replaced by Daniel Casey on Fast & Furious 9) has hinted that a trip to space may be on the cards one day. “Nothing’s out of the question,” Morgan told Polygon in 2019. Maybe that rocket-powered Pontiac in the trailer does more than just drive…

Fast and Furious 9 cast: who’s behind the wheel?

The tragic death of franchise mainstay Paul Walker (who played cop-turned-racer Brian O’Conner) left a major hole in Dominic Toretto’s crew for Fast & Furious 8. Heading into part 9, however, the Fast Saga’s core “family” is pretty much unchanged. That means Vin Diesel’s back as Dom, backed up by Michelle Rodriguez (Letty), Tyrese Gibson (Roman), Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges (Tej) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey).

Among the returnees to the gang, Sung Kang is the biggest news, back as the unexpectedly not-dead Han, but Jordan Brewster also makes a comeback as Dom’s younger sister, Mia – she sat out Fast and Furious 8, as Mia settled down with Brian to raise their family.

There’s also franchise returns returns for Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift vets Lucas Black (Sean), Bow Wow (Twinkie) and Jason Tobin (Earl), and for Helen Mirren as Magdalene, the Shaw matriarch busted out of prison in Hobbs & Shaw.

There’s been no confirmation, however, on whether we’ll be seeing more from Kurt Russell (Mr Nobody), Scott Eastwood (Little Nobody), Dwayne Johnson (Luke Hobbs) or Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw) – we wouldn’t be surprised if any of them popped up for a cameo,

Charlize Theron, a brilliant addition to the Fast and Furious 8 cast, is back with a new short haircut to front the villains as uber-hacker Cipher. She’ll be joined by John Cena as antagonistic Toretto sibling Jakob.

There are also roles for Guardians of the Galaxy’s Michael Rooker (Buddy) and singer Cardi B.

Will there be more Fast Saga movies after Fast and Furious 9?

You can bet on it. In fact, at least one more is a certainty, because – as Diesel revealed in a Facebook post after the release of Fast & Furious 8 in 2015 – parts eight, nine and ten have been planned as “one last trilogy to end the saga”. Various reports have suggested that Lin will be back to direct part 10.

A 2020 interview with Total Film magazine (via GamesRadar) went further, with Diesel hinting that the tenth movie could be split into a two-part finale, à la Harry Potter and The Hunger Games.

“I started planning for Fast 10 before we started filming Fast 9,” he said. “The universe is so robust and so rich with talent and rich with story that, on one level, it’s totally feasible to have spin-offs, and I think that’s something that is inevitable. Universal deserves it because of how much they’ve invested in this little saga, and it’d be good to give back to Universal. And for the fans, should Fast 10 parts one and two be the conclusion, it would be nice for this world to continue for generations to come.”

Diesel’s comments are slightly ambiguous, but it doesn’t look like there are any plans to park the franchise any time soon. There’s already a Fast & Furious: Spy Racers animation on Netflix, while the success of Hobbs & Shaw means there’s every chance Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will rekindle their love-hate relationship in a follow-up. There have also been rumors of a female-fronted spin-off.

The Fast Saga will be 20 years old in 2021, but there’s no reason it can’t manage another couple of decades – though the fact the crew will probably be driving electric cars by then means the franchise could sound very, very different.

This Samsung Galaxy S20 deal on EE offers big data and monthly bills of just £36

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:01 AM PDT

If you've been closely monitoring Samsung Galaxy S20 deals since they were announced, you will know that they are by no means an affordable option, despite being the cheapest of Samsung's three new phones.

However, as a slight relieve from the high prices, we've come across an offer from Mobiles.co.uk dropping, what appears to be, the lowest price on a S20 contract so far. Costing £36 a month for 45GB of data, this undercuts everything else.

Obviously, with that kind of price there is also an upfront cost - £150 to be exact. However, even with that extra spend, this still comes in as the cheapest option and you can save a tenner by using the code 10OFF at the checkout.

If you really can't stomach that price and would feel more comfortable paying all of your costs on a monthly basis, an offer from Affordable Mobiles will get you the handset for £43 a month and nothing upfront with 90GB of data. However, this deal is on the 4G handset meaning you'll be missing 5G capability.

This affordable Samsung Galaxy S20 deal in full:

What is the Samsung Galaxy S20 like?

The cheapest of the three new devices but easily the one most people will go for. Like its two bigger brothers, the S20 comes with a 120Hz display meaning smooth transitions between different apps and activities. It has the smallest display at 6.2-inches but holds the same Quad-HD+ Dynamic AMOLED display. Internally, there's a triple camera set-up, offering a telephoto 64MP camera and a wide angle and Ultra Wide, plus a 4000mAh battery and 12GB RAM.

A Quiet Place Part 2 release date delayed by coronavirus – which movie will be next?

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 08:47 AM PDT

Update: we've edited this story to clarify that Fast 9 has also moved release dates.

Horror sequel A Quiet Place Part 2 has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, moving from its previously announced March release date. It joins No Time To Die and Peter Rabbit 2 as the latest film to switch timings in reaction to how the virus is affecting the world right now. No new release date has been confirmed by studio Paramount Pictures just yet.

Director and star John Krasinski addressed fans of the movie in a brief Twitter message. "One of the things I'm most proud of is that people have said our movie is one you have to see together. Well, due to the ever-changing circumstances of what's going on in the world around us, now is clearly not the right time to do that. As insanely excited as we are for all of you to see this movie... I'm gonna wait to release the film 'til we CAN all see it together! So here's to our group movie date! See you soon!"

See the original tweet below:

Other movies are staying put for now, but all 70,000+ cinemas in China are closed at the moment, and it's hard not to see more movies delaying as the situation around coronavirus develops.

Which other movies could slip?

As people seek to self-isolate and stay safe during the spread of coronavirus, the effect on communal spaces like theaters could be massive – especially if movie release dates keep moving. But as coronavirus cases increase, it's hard to predict how far-reaching the effects could be.

A story on Deadline last week suggested Black Widow and Fast and Furious 9 won't move from their scheduled May release dates. But now, Fast 9 has moved, and a lot can happen in the next few weeks.

Red Magic 5G is the world’s first gaming smartphone with a 144Hz display

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 08:16 AM PDT

Nubia was one of the first smartphone companies to have a dedicated sub-brand just for gaming smartphones. With the Red Magic 5G, it manages to achieve a couple of feats that no other smartphone can currently boast of.

Red Magic has been known for bold designs, powerful specifications, big, high refresh rate displays, and giant batteries. Even with the bar set so high, the Red Magic 5G improves upon on all those aspects.

Nubia Red Magic 5G specifications

For starters, the Red Magic 5G is the world’s first 5G gaming smartphone, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 modem. Both NSA and SA standards are supported. Unsurprisingly, it is also powered by the Snapdragon 865 (clocked at 2.84GHz) and the Adreno 650 GPU, up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage.

To keep the peak performance sustained, the Red Magic 5G also houses an interesting cooling solution. We’re looking at an actual fan that can spin as fast as 15,000 rpm and covers an area of 40,000 mm². That is further bolstered by an L-shaped cooling chamber that uses a combination of thermal paste, a copper foil, and graphite. There are vents on either side of the phone to assist in air circulation.

Other gaming-centric additions include capacitive shoulder buttons, 4D haptic feedback with a linear vibration motor, and docking pins on the side to connect peripherals such as Ethernet, headphones and charging cables.

The Red Magic 5G is also the first gaming smartphone with a 144Hz refresh rate. It is a 6.65-inch AMOLED panel with a 240Hz touch sampling rate. It uses Goodix’s latest in-display fingerprint scanner too. Moreover, it covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space.

The display is flanked by a pair of front-firing loudspeakers for a stereo sound output. The audio is also DTS X Ultra certified. The 3.5mm headphone jack is also present. As a part of the new Red Magic OS, we also get features such as picture-in-picture, wireless airplay, and game space.

As for the cameras, the Red Magic 5G has three of them on the back. The primary camera is the 64MP f/1.8 Sony IMX686 sensor, followed by an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2MP macro lens. The selfie shooter also uses an 8MP camera. New shooting modes include anti-shake video recording and a vlog mode.

To keep the gaming sessions going, the Red Magic 5G runs off a 4,500mAh battery. For charging, it supports up to 55W (5.5V, 10A) fast charging, as well as Quick Charge 4.0 and USB PD 3.0. 15-minute top-up is said to fill the battery by 56%, with a full charge taking about 40 minutes.

Red Magic 5G pricing

The phone is currently only available in China, but they did confirm global availability at a later date. Considering that the Red Magic 3 and 3S made their way to India, we are hopeful that the Red Magic 5G will too.

  • 8GB+128GB: CNY 3799 (~Rs 40,000)
  • 12GB+128GB: CNY 4099 (~Rs 43,500)
  • 12GB+256GB: CNY 4399 (~Rs 46,500)
  • 16GB+256GB: CNY 4999 (~Rs 53,000)

There’s also a special edition with a transparent back which shows off the fan and other components. It is priced slightly higher at CNY 4,599(~Rs 49,000) for the 12GB + 256GB variant, and CNY 5,199(~Rs 55,000) for the top-of-the-line 16GB + 256GB model.

5G is all but confirmed for the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro

Posted: 12 Mar 2020 08:07 AM PDT

The Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro are set to launch on March 26, with many suspecting the handsets would support 5G connectivity - including us.

That rumor has been put to bed today thanks to a recent certification from Thailand’s NTBC, which confirms that both upcoming phones will have 5G variants and sport fancy new monikers: the Huawei P40 5G and Huawei P40 Pro 5G.

With 5G connectivity practically guaranteed, then, it’s likely that both phones will feature the latest Kirin 990 5G chipset. We already know that the P40 will have a “never seen” design, too, hinting at a radical new look, and that the phone will run Android 10 (without Google services).

Go Pro?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, other rumors both the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro look set to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, but the P40 Pro will likely include 40W fast charging and potentially a curved display.

With Huawei previously boasting that it’s “12-18 months ahead of the competition” when it comes to 5G connectivity, the company’s push to deliver high-end 5G handsets makes complete sense. It may also convince users that despite losing Google’s core services, Huawei’s phones are still a viable investment.

Though still unconfirmed, there's a good chance we'll see 4G versions of both the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro, but time will tell.

We’ll find out more about Huawei’s brand new smartphones on March 26, when both handsets will be officially unveiled during an online-only event.

This small bare-bones PC has an absurdly fast 8th-generation Intel Core i7 processor and discrete-class AMD Radeon graphics. Adding some RAM and storage to the mix, and you will be conquering the best PC games without breaking a sweat. It won’t compete against a full-sized desktop, but when you’re short on space – or you want a PC that looks like a set-top box – this is one of the best PCs to consider.

HP Omen Desktop PC

While the Decepticon look this gaming PC sports might only be for some, there’s definitely something for everybody as far as configurations go – whether you’re a casual gamer on a budget or a hardcore one willing to drop a lot of dough for a souped up rig. At less than $1,500 (about £1,180, AU$2,170), you’re getting more than enough power to get you through AAA games, albeit probably not on Ultra. At $2,335 (about £1,835, AU$3,235) or more, you’re getting a considerable amount of power and storage. Plus, HP Omen Desktop PC comes in a tool-less design, making it upgradeable. If you're after a high-end gaming PC that can handle the latest games with ease, this is the one to get.

Apple Mac mini (2018)

Intel Compute Stick

Some people have issues with desktop PCs, as they’re often rather bulky. The Intel Core Compute Stick has made that irrelevant. Looking more like a thumb drive than an actual computer, this tiny renegade can connect to any monitor with an HDMI input. Its base starts with a lowly 1.33GHz Intel Atom processor running Linux, but can be configured up to an Intel Core m5 processor. This is one of the best PCs, but one that you can literally slip in your pocket, whether you need to get some work done during your daily commute or squeeze in some PC time while you’re traveling.

Lenovo Yoga A940

As a designer, if you don’t fall in love with Lenovo Yoga A940’s thoughtful design, then we don’t know what will. This innovative all-in-one desktop boasts a stunning 27-inch 4K UHD display with up to 25-degree tilt, pen support and a rotating hinge for stability. It’s full of impressive features as well, like the Lenovo Precision Dial that you can attach on the left or right side of the hinge, whatever feels most comfortable for you and your process. And, unlike the best Macs, it offers 100% Adobe RGB support, an LED light at the bottom of the screen and even wireless smartphone charging. If you’re a content creator or designer, and you’re looking for an AIO that allows you a truly seamless workflow, this is the best computer for you.

iMac Pro

Unfortunately, what does hold Lenovo Yoga A940 back are its less powerful, slightly aging internals. If you want an all-in-one powerhouse that absolutely blows you away in terms of performance, then the iMac Pro is the best computer for you. This AIO designed specifically for professionals and creatives may not be super rich in features, but it’s got a lot to offer where it truly counts. That includes its vibrant 27-inch 5K display with a P3 wide color gamut, mind-blowing Radeon Pro Vega graphics, and plenty of memory for all your exacting workloads. Just be prepared to shell out a bunch of cash, as this doesn’t come cheap.
