Apple : Nvidia GeForce Now is bleeding games, is it still worth your time and money?

Nvidia GeForce Now is bleeding games, is it still worth your time and money?

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 12:00 PM PDT

Nvidia GeForce Now hit the streets like a month ago, and in what was a surprise to literally no one, it is the best game streaming service on the market right now. It's not without its flaws, though.

For starters, it seems like all kinds of developers are suddenly pulling their games from the service, from AAA heavy hitters like Bethesda to Indie developers like Hinterland Studio, which just yanked its game The Long Dark off of the service. Because GeForce Now lets you play games you "own" – something I'll get into in a bit – its a little discouraging that game developers can basically cut off access to games you've paid money for.

This whole thing throws into question whether or not you should invest your time and money into the platform. There are certainly people who think that game streaming is the future of gaming, but when you can't be guaranteed access to the games you have paid for, it's a future that I don't want to be a part of.

GeForce Now

You can play games on really tiny laptops, and I love that

Let's get the good stuff out of the way

One thing I have to say before I start telling people to avoid GeForce Now is that it's actually pretty freaking great. I'll admit that our friends over at PC Gamer actually put it through the paces much more than I've had the chance to do, and they found that it has much less latency than Google Stadia. For a company like Google, which is practically synonymous with "the internet," it's super surprising that Nvidia could win in this area.

And, frankly, games have the potential to look much better on Nvidia GeForce Now, assuming that you're playing at 1080p (side note, Nvidia needs to work on getting a 4K version of GeForce Now running). This is largely thanks to the fact that you're running native PC versions of games, allowing for settings like ray tracing and DLSS that the AMD Vega-powered machines behind Google Stadia just can't do.

I also have to talk about the sheer amount of games available for GeForce Now, even if a lot of games keep getting sucked out of the service. There are so many PC games out there that GeForce Now has a potential game library that could absolutely dwarf any game console, let alone competing streaming service. But, therein lies the problem.

Nvidia GeForce Now

Nvidia GeForce Now is probably the only gaming platform without Skyrim

The case of the disappearing PC games

I don't know who to blame for the games that keep disappearing from Nvidia GeForce Now. Is it Nvidia's fault for allegedly adding games without permission from developers according to this GameRant report? Or should the blame lie on behalf of game developers not allowing users to play games that they paid money for on the platform of their choice? Or is it both?

The way I look at it, Nvidia GeForce Now functionally acts as a PC rental service. You're essentially borrowing a PC to play PC games that you wouldn't otherwise be able to run on hardware you have locally available to you. A report from The Verge dives into the legal reasons why it isn't looked at in this way by game developers and publishers, but functionally to the everyday user, that's how it works.

This whole controversy does seem to show the consequences of a tech company entering the game industry from the outside. Nvidia told The Verge that publishers "are taking a while to make up their minds" on whether or not their games will be available. While to you and I, Nvidia is just renting out a remote PC to play games, legally speaking that's not the way it works. Digital game licensing is a complicated beast, and it doesn't allow for services like this to exist without paying tribute – which definitely sucks for everyone that's not making a profit off of this.

But in the game streaming world, Nvidia isn't the only one that's having to face tough truths about the game industry. Even Google Stadia is starting to feel the sting of licensing agreements, as it is having trouble growing a sizable library. According to a Business Insider piece, Google is hinging its service entirely on huge AAA games that are available on other platforms, without the thick library of indie games that give other game platforms life between big tent-pole releases. And it entirely comes down to the fact that when it comes to give indie devs an incentive to port games over, Google won't budge.

So, basically, both of the major game streaming services out right now are having trouble either getting games onto their platforms or keeping them there. Both Google and Nvidia are new to this part of the game industry, so it's to be expected that there would be growing pains there. If we lived in a perfect world, we wouldn't have to worry about licensing agreements to play games we already owned, but we don't.

Hopefully when Microsoft xCloud makes its way to market, we'll finally have a game streaming service that isn't so mired in disappointment. Microsoft definitely has weight it can throw around in the industry which, when combined with the power of Azure, could lead to Microsoft easily taking the throne in the game streaming world. We'll have to wait and see there, though.

This remains the best way to play PC games, sorry

Keep it local

Because licensing is such a mess for both Stadia and GeForce Now, playing your games locally on one of the best gaming PCs is the best course of action right now. Don't get me wrong, the way that digital game licenses work means that game publishers can absolutely take away your games for pretty much any reason, but it's actually pretty rare that you're prevented from installing any game you bought on Steam on your own PC.

The way I look at GeForce Now at this time is that it's an excellent secondary service. If you have a MacBook that you're taking with you on the road, and you want to play your favorite game, it's an excellent choice. It's true that there are some gaming laptops out there that are getting extremely thin and light, but none of them are quite on the level of a MacBook Air – at least, not yet.

But, because the state of game licenses on Nvidia GeForce Now is so iffy right now, I can't advise anyone use it as their main gaming platform. The fact that you have to buy the games through Steam, and then hope that the game publisher doesn't pull the game from Nvidia's platform makes me nervous. I'll just come out and say that you shouldn't buy a game if Nvidia GeForce Now is the only way you can play it.

I know I sound like a broken record by saying this, but if you want to play PC games, you should consider building or buying a gaming PC.

I get that it's significantly more expensive up front to do this, but if you play your games locally, you're much less likely to have to deal with publishers and platform holders fighting over licensing agreements.

The good news is that if you want to build a PC that's comparable to the hardware you're gaining access to, you don't need to drop too much cash. According to some leaks, it's only using 14GB of RAM, a custom Intel processor with 4-cores and 8-threads and a custom Nvidia processor with 56 compute units, which is somewhere between the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2080 Ti – but with a much lower clock speed than either.

That GPU is frankly overkill for 1080p gaming, and you can get away with maxing out every modern game with ray tracing with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, or without ray tracing with the AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT. That would be my advice – get yourself a nice little mid-range gaming PC and live your best local gaming life.

On my end, as someone who has access to all the latest and greatest PC hardware, I'm having a good ol' time with Nvidia GeForce Now, as I can play some of my favorite games while sitting on my couch with my MacBook. That, I think is the ideal use-case for this technology right now.

Services like Nvidia GeForce Now and Google Stadia are exciting little bits of technology, and the future may indeed be bright for game streaming. However, with the messy way that the game industry functions, it probably won't be the best way to primarily play your games for a while. Until Microsoft throws its hat in the ring with xCloud, game streaming is going to be a very specific niche, meant for folks that have killer internet connections and other ways to play games when either the service is having a rough time, or when their favorite games are no longer available.

Until then, I'll still be playing games on my gaming PC. At least there I know I'll be able to play Dragon Age: Inquisition until the Sun implodes.

NBA live stream: how to watch every game online in 2020 from anywhere

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 10:40 AM PDT

The 2020 NBA playoffs are now just around the corner, but before we get to April and then eventually to June's NBA finals, there's plenty of regular season action still to be played. Follow our guide and you can watch an NBA live stream online no matter wherever you are - there are even some legit free NBA live stream options for basketball fans to enjoy.

So far, the 2019/20 NBA season has mostly gone according to plan. Led by last year's league MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo - or 'The Greek Freak', if you prefer - the Milwaukee Bucks currently enjoy a comfortable lead atop the Eastern Conference. Last year's NBA champions, the Toronto Raptors, are locked in a battle with the Boston Celtics for the number no.2 seed, with the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers lurking just behind and all likely play-off teams.

On the other side of the country, few would bet against the Los Angeles Lakers wrapping up the Western Conference sooner rather than later. Led by potential GOAT LeBron James and with superstar big man Anthony David upfront, they boast arguably the most star-studded lineup in the league - consider that Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo aren't even in the team's first-choice starting 5 and you begin to appreciate just how talented the Lakers are this year.

When the season started, there were no less than 1,230 regular season NBA games to look forward to. That number might have now dwindled, but what's left are the ones that really matter, so keep reading to find out how to watch an NBA live stream online from pretty much anywhere in the world.

How to live stream the NBA and watch online from outside your country

Scroll down for NBA live stream details in a number of countries where basketball is particularly popular. But before that, know that if you can't watch an NBA game on your usual TV channel or streaming service, it might be due to a coverage blackout (in the US) or a geo-blocking restriction (in international markets).

When this is the case, the simplest and most reliable solution is to use a VPN service to change your IP address to a difference location. This will generally let you tune in to your local coverage, just as you would from home, and means you don't have to trawl the sketchier corners of the internet for an illegal stream.

How to watch an NBA live stream for free in 2020

UK basketball fans may be the luckiest in the world this season, as they can tune into  a free NBA live stream of selected games via the Sky Sports YouTube channel - in general, Saturday's showcase games are what the network offers up by way of watching the NBA for free online.

However, Brits on holiday or travelling abroad for work will find that geo-blocking rears its ugly head, even on YouTube. When that's the case, UK residents shoud consider using a Virtual Private Network to point their IP address back to Blighty and enjoy all that the Sky Sports YouTube channel has to offer as usual. Of these, ExpressVPN is the best and offers a free trial so you can see if it's the right solution for you.

Upcoming NBA games you can live stream for free on YouTube include

  • Saturday, March 7: Houston Rockets @ Charlotte Hornets
  • Saturday, March 14: Phoenix Suns @ Dallas Mavericks
  • Saturday, March 21: Boston Celtics @ Brooklyn Nets
  • Saturday, March 28: Cleveland Cavaliers @ Brooklyn Nets
  • Saturday, April 4: Oklahoma City Thunder @ LA Clippers
  • Saturday, April 11: Detroit Pistons @ Dallas Mavericks

NBA League Pass: the best way to live stream the NBA online?

As we're about to explain, there are a number of options for streaming the NBA online. But one that keeps cropping up is NBA League Pass, the league's official streaming service.

If you want to follow your favorite team all season long or even if you want to keep up with every team in the league, it's a great way to watch the NBA from all over the world.

In the US, an NBA League Pass subscription starts at just $29.99 a year, which will let you live stream all the NBA games aired on TV online. A $59.99 annual subscription will let you follow your team all season, or you can up the ante to $99.99 a year and watch all of the league's teams in action. The most expensive tier features a $124.99 outlay for 12-months the same access, but without any commercials. However, you should bear in mind, unlike its international equivalents, NBA League Pass streaming in the US is still subject to blackouts

The service offers a different packages for international markets, but generally speaking, NBA fans outside the US have the option of Team Choice access - which costs £14.99 a month and lets you stream every NBA game live for a specific team - or a full League Pass subscription priced at £24.99 a month. That lets you watch every single NBA game online. Yes, that means all 1,230 of them, as well as all the playoffs and NBA Finals action. You might lose some sleep in the process, but for diehard fans, it may be a no-brainer.

As ever, if you're out of the country you subscribed to NBA League Pass in, it's likely you can use a VPN to get around these restrictions - based on comprehensive testing, we rate ExpressVPN as the best and it offers a free trial so you can check it out, no strings attached.

NBA playoff predictions 2020

As we've said, the Milwaukee Bucks are odds-on to win the Eastern Conference, with the only real regular season drama left being the battle for the no.2 seed - it would appear to be a straight up duel between the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raports, but the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers are all also in the frame.

The Western Conference is a bit more interesting, as despite a seemingly unbeatable roster, the Lakers face fierce competition for the no.1 seed from local rivals the LA Clippers. The 'other' Los Angeles team boast pair of their own superstars - Kawhi Leonard, formerly of the Toronto Raptors and last year's NBA Finals MVP, and the supremely talented Paul George.

Also in contention in the Western Conference and likely to find themselves enjoying playoff basketball come April are the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, and Utah Jazz. The Oklahoma City Thunder can't be ruled out, either, and nor can the Dallas Mavericks - not if Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic keeps playing as well as he is.

Who won the NBA finals in 2019?

The Toronto Raptors are this year's defending champions, having dethroned the Golden State Warriors in 2019. In a scintillating NBA Finals, the Raptors sealed the deal in game 6 of the best of seven series, beating the Warriors 114-110.

The game 6 victory was thanks to a fantastic all-round team effort that featured 22 points from (then) star player Kawhi Leonard, 26 points from guard Kyle Lowry and a huge 26 point, 10 rebound effort from forward Pascal Siakam. It represented the first time in Raptors franchise history that the team had won the NBA championship and it's safe to say Toronto partied hard that night.

A pivotal Serie A clash is back on today, having been initially postponed due to the coronavirus - read on for your guide to getting a Juventus vs Inter Milan live stream.

As the match is being played being closed doors, it's one of the few options there is to watch Juve vs Inter - and what a fascinating clash it is. Juventus have not yet lost on home turf in the league this season, but their opponents tonight are likely to provide the toughest test they've faced at the Allianz Stadium in Turin this campaign.

Antonio Conte's Inter currently find themselves six points behind Juve, but with a game in hand they could put some much need pressure on the Old Lady with a win here.

With Juve still reeling following a Champions League round-of-16 first leg defeat at Lyon, there may not be a better time for the Nerazzurri to visit Turin.

Key to a positive result for Conte's men will likely be decent showing from recent signing Christian Eriksen. Likely to be deploy in a 'number ten' role, the Dane hasn't quite found his footing in Italy since his big money move from Spurs.

Aaron Ramsey is set to return to the starting line-up after his substitute appearance against Lyon, while fan favourite Giorgio Chiellini will likely start in defence after easing his way back into the team following his cruciate knee injury.

It's the 237th time the two teams have met in the Derby d’Italia and it's a match you can watch live (and, indeed, every televised Serie A match) no matter where you are in the world. To find out how, read on and we'll tell you the best ways to live stream Juventus vs Inter Milan.

Keep on scrolling if your a citizen of the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand or Canada - we'll tell you your broadcasting option (spoiler alert, it's ESPN+ in the US).

If your 3rd-gen iPad Air has a faulty screen, Apple might fix it for free

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 09:30 AM PDT

Apple says certain 3rd-gen iPad Air models launched last year are faulty, and will display a blank screen that can't be fixed. If yours is one of them, Apple will fix the tablet for free.

"Apple has determined that, under certain circumstances, the screen on a limited number of iPad Air (3rd generation) devices may go blank permanently," says Apple. "A brief flicker or flash may appear before the screen goes blank."

"Affected devices were manufactured between March 2019 and October 2019. Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will service eligible devices, free of charge."

To get your fix, you need to make an appointment at an Apple Store or one of its third-party partners. If there are other problems with your iPad Air besides the screen, you may get charged for those repairs.

Hardware issues

There's no immediate rush – the program is valid for up to two years after purchase, so don't panic if your iPad Air hasn't displayed the blank screen problem yet. If it eventually does happen, you can take your tablet in.

These Apple repair and replacement programs are getting commonplace now: we've recently seen Apple highlighting issues with a limited number of iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus units, and some 13-inch MacBook Pros sold last year.

Then there's the ongoing issues with the butterfly keyboards on recent MacBook laptops, something Apple will hope it's finally fixed with the newest 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The next iPads due to appear will be new iPad Pros in March, we think, replacing the models first launched in 2018 – though ongoing problems caused by the coronavirus may result in a delayed launch or limited availability.

We saw 1917 with Dolby Atmos surround sound – and it was utterly mind-blowing

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I’ve never had such a visceral, physical reaction to a film as I did when I saw 1917 at the Dolby screening rooms in Soho, central London.

Directed by Sam Mendes, the First World War epic follows two British soldiers who are tasked with crossing no man’s land to deliver an important message to another regiment, warning them that their impending attack on the German army is doomed to failure.

The lights went up, and as I walked the 15 minutes from the screening rooms to the train station, bristling against the wind, I noticed that my hands were shaking a little.

I felt as if I had just walked out of a war zone and found myself on the bustling streets of Chinatown in London. It was… jarring.

I realized that I had been so invested, so utterly engrossed in the film I was watching that some part of me had started to feel like I was actually there, on the Western Front of northern France, dodging bullets, cowering from explosions, and recoiling from the decomposing bodies of countless fallen soldiers.

Aside from the innovative one shot-style cinematography used in 1917, a key contributor to this unusual immersion is down to the sound design – and in particular, the use of Dolby Atmos

1917

Real danger

Dolby Atmos is an object-based audio format that allows you to hear sound in a 360-degree bubble, as if the sound you hear from a film is coming at you from all angles.

This gives the sound a more three-dimensional effect – imagine the difference between hearing a helicopter flying a few hundred yards away versus hovering directly over your head.

The audio mixing happens in sound studios where audio engineers take sound effects in movies and digitally move them around three-dimensional space. When you play the movie back using Dolby Atmos speakers, you'll be able to hear the effects move around you, just like the audio engineers intended.

In 1917’s case, that means that a stray bullet sounded as though it was actually whizzing past my ear, and a shot-down fighter plane seemed to whine and sputter directly overhead before it crashed to the ground, spewing black smoke right in front of my eyes.

The result was that every gunshot made me jump out of my skin, and in my own small way, I was able to experience the sheer panic of characters on screen. At times, it was genuinely frightening.

It felt like real danger, and that’s a testament not only to the prowess of the post-production team (who won the Oscars for Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, and Cinematography), but also the power of Dolby Atmos used to its full potential.

If you can, I urge you to see 1917 at a Dolby Atmos-equipped theater – you won't be disappointed.

Man United vs Man City live stream: how to watch the Premier League online from anywhere today

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 07:31 AM PDT

The Red Devils haven't managed a derby double over their noisy neighbours since the 2009/10 season - but can they do it today? We'll help you discover where to watch a Man United vs Man City live stream from all over the world.

Man United ran out as 2-1 winners at the Etihad in December the last time these two teams met in the Premier League, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial getting the goals for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side and Nicolas Otamendi on target for City.

That result dealt a significant blow to Pep Guardiola's side's hopes of retaining the title this season and will no doubt be keen to avenge that damaging defeat.

Both teams come into today's match in arguably their best form of the season.

Manchester United extended their recent good run of form with a professional job in the FA Cup, comfortably beating Derby 3-0 on Thursday. Before that, the Red Devils drew at Everton in the league to pile the pressure on Chelsea in the battle for fourth place.

City have fared even better of late, grabbing their first piece of domestic silverware of the season with a hard-fought win over Aston Villa in the League Cup Final on Sunday. They followed that up with a 1-0 win over a stubborn Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

You can watch all of the action as it happens by checking out our Man United vs Man City live stream guide below.

Use a VPN to watch Premier League football from outside your country

If you're abroad tonight but still want to watch your home coverage, you'll need a VPN to do so. That's because your normal coverage will be geo-blocked. It's really easy to do and stops you having to tune in to some dodgy stream you heard about down the pub.

Man United vs Man City: latest news and predictions

City have been historically excellent in March under Guardiola - they're unbeaten in all 10 of their Premier League fixtures in the month since the Spaniard took charge at the Etihad and have won each of the last seven in a row.

Guardiola has also won all three of his Premier League trips to Man United (no away manager has won more at Old Trafford), and there's further incentive for the Sky Blues if the win on Sunday. City can become the first top-flight side to win four fixtures in a row at Old Trafford since the Citizens themselves managed a run of five successive victories between 1968 and 1972.

Phil Foden is being tipped to earn a start for City following  his impressive Carabao Cup final performance amid doubts over Kevin De Bruyne's fitness, while Daniel James and Aaaron Wan-Bissaka could both be in contention for the home side.

If you're abroad and outside of your home country, trying to live stream your regular native broadcaster's coverage of the Six Nations isn't likely to be possible as the stream will be location restricted.

Fear not, however, as you'll still be able to watch all the action by using a VPN.

All you need to do is download and install the software or an app from one of the many VPN services out there that will spoof your computer into thinking that it's located home. This means you'll be able to enjoy your home coverage (so long as you comply with the broadcaster's TS&Cs), without having to hunt around dodgy websites for an illegal stream.

Playing Mario Kart Tour multiplayer is the mobile fix we’ve been waiting for

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 06:00 AM PDT

Mario Kart Tour, The freemium mobile game from Nintendo and DeNA, has been a joy to play since its launch back in September 2019, but it’s finally adding a long-awaited feature that’s been at the core of the franchise: multiplayer.

We tested it ahead of its March 8 at 11PM ET release date and can verify that it does indeed preserve the classic head-to-head racing DNA of its console versions... which means, of course, that friendships will be put to the test - since local multiplayer works.

If you haven’t played Mario Kart Tour, the controls are simplified for smartphone displays: while holding your device vertically, drag your finger left or right to steer. If you’ve picked up an item use it by tapping the screen. That’s it! The rest of the gameplay follows Mario Kart racing conventions.

It’s easy to drop into a game with nearby players: if you start a custom game, they’ll populate a list alongside friends you’ve linked up with on your Nintendo Account (required to play, but free).

You can also quickly queue up a standard multiplayer match: all players globally play the same cup (selection of tracks), which rotates every 15 minutes. It’s a quick-and-dirty way to get your fix, and we imagine it could be easier on Nintendo’s back-end to supply identical instances of matches all over the world. But it also saves time from fiddling with settings.

You can fiddle to your heart’s content by making a custom game, which will let you switch up item options, cup list, and speeds (50cc, 100cc, and 150cc).

The fastest 200cc speed is only accessible for players who’ve bought a Gold Pass - a $5 per month subscription service for the game that also adds in-game currency gifts, badges, and challenges. It’s optional - without it, players can still queue up those Standard Races as well as real-time multiplayer.

Mario Kart Tour

Bringing the dreaded blue shell to handheld devices

As for racers, you can choose whoever you’ve unlocked in single-player mode through the biweekly event rotations - these typically consist of slightly different character variants as well as karts and gliders to earn.

As for racers, you can choose whoever you've unlocked in single-player mode through the biweekly event rotations

There’s no multiplayer-specific drivers or items yet - not any that Nintendo will confirm, anyway - nor did they discuss whether the ever-popular battle mode would be coming to Mario Kart Tour. That might be a little tougher given the vertically-oriented game layout, but it’s a captivating idea, especially since Nintendo seems to have pulled off a seriously authentic multiplayer experience that looks and feels like the Mario Kart you know from consoles.

Mario Kart Tour

Members of the Mario Kart Tour team gave TechRadar a rundown of the multiplayer, and we all went head-to-head on a few races. Though we were all in a room, the team had hooked up the motley arrangement of phones (we played on an iPhone 6) on three different hotspots to simulate different (i.e. not just local WiFi) connections, and there were no connectivity issues.

Races proceeded so simultaneously that, controls aside, races felt identical to how they do on console

Players who queued up early waited until everyone had loaded into the game, and races proceeded so simultaneously that, controls aside, races felt identical to how they do on console.

Which is another way of saying that the competition got heated and the trash talk flowed. And while this was great fun piled in a room, it made us want to beg Nintendo to add one thing first: voice chat to properly egg on your fellow racers.

Mario Kart Tour

...but too bad online opponents won't hear you

While voice comms aren’t a feature Nintendo has added in the past (even to its console games), this addition marks the first time the gaming giant has explored real-time smartphone multiplayer, so perhaps Nintendo would be more pliable if it knew other players were equally eager about this feature.

After all, what’s the joy in edging out your pal with a well-timed mushroom boost if you can’t gloat about it after - whether they’re in the room or across the world?

  • Enjoying Mario Kart Tour? You can play it on iOS and Android, but here are the best gaming phones just in case

Dubai becomes the first city in UAE to apply security standards for ICS

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 05:20 AM PDT

Dubai has become the first emirate in the UAE to put security standards on industrial control systems (ICS) as there is an increase in OT (operational technology) security incidents in the Middle East and the digital transformation drive is going to make it worse as the threat landscape is getting more sophisticated.

IT (information technology) systems are storage systems, computing technology, business applications and data analysis while OT systems are machinery equipment, assets monitoring systems, industrial control systems (ICS) and SCADA devices.

Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC), the regulatory authority in Dubai, is stepping in at the right time as IT and OT systems are merging and getting connected to the internet.

The Iranian malware Shamoon 1, in 2012, reportedly destroyed thousands of computers at Saudi Aramco and Qatar’s RasGas. Shamoon 2 made similar attacks in 2016 and 2017 while Shamoon 3 made a new wave of attacks against targets in the Middle East oil and gas plants in December 2018.

In 2017, cybercriminals behind Triton, also called Trisis, targeted Triconex safety instrumented system (SIS) controllers sold by Schneider Electric, leading to plant shutdown, due to flaws in security procedures.

In 2019, Triton once again targeted industrial control systems (ICS) at another company in the Middle East.

The first was Stuxnet, known to have developed by the US and Israel to sabotage Iran’s nuclear ambitions in 2009 while the second malware, Duqu was a reconnaissance programme and it contained 20 times more code than Stuxnet and is much more widespread than Duqu.

The Industroyer (also known as Crashoverride) is a malware framework considered to have been used in the cyberattack on Ukraine's power grid.

Havex is a remote access trojan discovered in 2013 as part of a widespread espionage campaign targeting industrial control systems (ICS) used across numerous industries in the US and Europe.

According to research firm Gartner, the size of the stand-alone OT security market in 2018 was valued at $250 million, growing to $1.1 billion in 2022, representing an annual growth rate of 45.7%.

Protecting digital infrastructure

Amer Sharaf, Director of Compliance, Support and Alliances at DESC, said that implementation of the standard, after benchmarking it against internationally recognised standards, by relevant government entities in Dubai will help provide a new and improved framework for industrial security and ensure minimal risk framework to fortify the industrial sector’s digital infrastructure against rise in cyberattacks on this sector globally.

Dr. Bushra Al Blooshi, Director of Research and Innovation at DESC, said that Enoc, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), Dubai Airports and The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) were key in co-developing and implementing the new security standard.

She said that RTA will implement the standard in tram and metro; Dewa in water generation and water transmission, power generation and power transmission;  Enoc in fuel transmission and airports.

“The standards were developed in collaboration with these four entities and they have till November to start deploying the standards. From April onwards, we will hold workshops with these entities and get feedback from them about the challenges they may face when implementing the standards,” she said.

When asked about the standard for private entities, she said that the standard for private sectors are pushed through the government entities but luckily, no private sector in Dubai is using ICS.

When asked whether there will a deadline to change legacy OT systems, he said that some of them have to put a plan and not an abrupt change. The risk assessment methodology will give flexibility, depending on high- to low-risk systems, and they can make a plan to reduce the risk.

DESC has the standard (Information Security Regulation) for the IT systems and was mandated in 2012.

Race towards digital transformation

In December 2019, DESC, in association with Dubai Health Authority (DHA), launched the security standard for electronic biomedical devices (EBMD) across the emirate in a bid to limit breaches within the healthcare sector and protecting sensitive patient information.

When asked whether there will be a unified UAE security standard for ICS, Al Blooshi said: “We are collaborating with TRA and Abu Dhabi Digital Authority to get it aligned across the UAE.  If Dubai’s implementation is successful, then the same standard or after a little bit of fine-tuning will be implemented at a federal level. It is the TRA which will take it to the federal level.”

Moreover, she said that the UAE is committed to lead in the race towards digital transformation by adopting artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the application of internet of things (IoT) and other smart technologies, especially that rely on 5G networks.

“The latest security standard is a crucial step towards protecting digital data across all sectors and at all cost,” she said.

Sharaf said that auditors from DESC will go and assess the systems for security compliance in the government and semi-government organisations.

“There are different KPIs for the Dubai Government Excellence Programme and one of them is compliance. If an entity gets better scores, they can move up the ladder in the excellence programme, part of an incentivised mechanism,” he said.

AMD processors going back to 2011 suffer from worrying security holes

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 04:22 AM PDT

AMD’s processors from as early as 2011 through to 2019 are carrying vulnerabilities that are as yet unpatched, according to some freshly published research.

Known as ‘Take A Way’ (every security problem needs a snappy name, of course), security researchers said that they reverse-engineered the L1D cache way predictor in AMD silicon in order to discover two new potential attack vectors.

Given all the attention which has been focused on the flaws in Intel’s CPUs in recent times – vulnerabilities which haven’t affected AMD chips in a number of cases – this might just serve as a reminder that no one’s silicon is bulletproof.

As spotted by Tom’s Hardware, Graz University of Technology released a paper detailing the vulnerabilities which AMD was informed of back in August 2019, although as mentioned, a fix has yet to be deployed.

The pair of exploits, dubbed Collide+Probe and Load+Reload, are side channel attacks (in the same vein as Spectre) that manipulate the aforementioned L1D cache predictor in order to access data that should otherwise be secure and unobtainable.

The paper (a PDF shared on Twitter by researcher Moritz Lipp) explains: “With Collide+Probe, an attacker can monitor a victim’s memory accesses without knowledge of physical addresses or shared memory when time-sharing a logical core.

“With Load+Reload, we exploit the way predictor to obtain highly-accurate memory-access traces of victims on the same physical core. While Load+Reload relies on shared memory, it does not invalidate the cache line, allowing stealthier attacks that do not induce any last level-cache evictions.”

The security researchers have already successfully leveraged these exploits on some common browsers, namely Chrome and Firefox. One of the researchers, Michael Schwarz, said that Collide+Probe has already been demonstrated being successfully leveraged via JavaScript in a browser, requiring no user interaction.

Performance concerns

The paper doesn’t just outline the problems here, though, but also provides potential solutions through both hardware and software mitigations, although no comment is made on whether software patches might be detrimental to system performance (as you may recall, there was a big fuss about this when it came to fixing Meltdown and Spectre).

AMD has yet to comment on the affair, but we’re guessing that situation will change soon enough.

As an interesting side-note, Tom’s observes that Hardware Unboxed spotted that ‘additional funding’ for the paper came from Intel, and questions have been raised by some about potential conflicts of interest in that respect.

Another of the researchers, Daniel Gruss, addressed the matter on Twitter to note that he wouldn’t accept any funding which restricted his academic freedom and independence.

Avaya offers its services in UAE free of charge to combat spread of Coronavirus

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 04:07 AM PDT

Many tech companies have come into play globally due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak which has pushed more companies, organisations and educational institutions to learn and work remotely.

In the UAE, the Government has decided to close public and private schools and higher education institutions for four weeks to combat the spread of Coronavirus.

The Education Ministry in the UAE had said that a pilot programme for remote education will be implemented during the period of closure without giving further details.

Globally, Google, Microsoft and Avaya have said that they will grant free access to their paid teleconferencing and collaboration tools for a limited time for enterprise customers and education institutes to make it easier for people and students to work and learn from home.

Google said that its Hangouts Meet will be offered to all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers globally through July 1st while Microsoft is planning to offer a free six-month trial globally for a premium tier of Microsoft Teams to hospitals, schools, and businesses.

Leila Serhan, Public Sector Director for Microsoft UAE, said that they are working with education institutions across UAE’s public and private sectors to empower them with tools such as Microsoft Teams, making remote teaching and learning easier.

“The health and safety of our employees, customers, partners and communities is a top priority for us at Microsoft, and we will continue our efforts to enable them with solutions to collaborate from anywhere,” she said.

Leila Serhan, Public Sector Director for Microsoft UAE

"The health and safety of our employees, customers, partners and communities is a top priority for us at Microsoft, and we will continue our efforts to enable them with solutions to collaborate from anywhere," Leila Serhan, Public Sector Director for Microsoft UAE, said.

Google was not available for comments when contacted.

Meanwhile, the US-based contact centre and unified communications specialist’s Avaya is offering its video collaboration solution – Avaya Spaces - free of charge for till August in the UAE and globally to enable remote learning.

It is a subscription-based pricing model but Avaya is offering it free of cost to all educational institutes and NGOs in the country as a measure to facilitate remote diagnosis and collaboration amid travel bans and other restrictions.

Savio Tovar Dias, Senior Director for Sales Engineering at Avaya, told TechRadar Middle East that the need of the hour is not to go and sell equipment but to give direct access for free as “we don’t know who long this impact will continue.”

He said that technology can help combat the spread of Coronavirus as people are living in an interesting world at the moment for the last two or three months and it is impacting businesses in all ways such as travels, meetings and face-to-face meetings have been curtailed.

“Any large gatherings are causing concerns,” he said.

Are tech companies capitalising on Coronavirus?

Dias said the tech companies are not trying to capitalise but to offer it as a service free of cost and for a humanitarian cause.

“As many exhibitions and events have been cancelled, remote working and video conferencing will gain traction and it broadens the boundaries of an enterprise for various reasons,” he said.

However, he said that communicating over phone or video is never the same or replicates face-to-face meetings in any shape or form but some elements can bring together to help and deliver a more effective remote collaboration.

“We need to protect the safety of our kids and give parents peace of mind and help teachers educate kids in this challenging environment. It would be nice to create a space where they can interact and collaborate via chat or video and can be recorded,” he said.

Avaya is in talks with educational institutions, hospitals and NGOs in the UAE amid travel bans and other restrictions.

“We have engaged teams and are in discussions with schools and institutions to educate them and how to add value this week across the region. We have vested interests in kids going to that school.  We have schools that are already our existing customers and have seen interests,” he said.

Moreover, he said that there are final year students who could potentially be impacted by the closure.

He added that healthcare is an important sector for them and many of the top hospitals and clinics globally are using their systems.

“Hospitals and airlines in Wuhan and other areas of China are already using the systems to equip customers with home working solutions and remote patient monitoring and consultations,” he said.

Avaya Space is a mobile app and works on desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Call to open VoIP services

Sukhdev Singh, executive director at research and consulting services provider Kantar, said that it is would be a right step for the UAE Government to open up the VoIP services as children are preparing for their final exams.

“TRA can temporarily lift the ban on VoIP services such as WhatsApp and Microsoft’s Skype to ensure that education is not impacted due to Coronavirus. In that way, the UAE Government is very sensitive ad open to adapt to the changes as they have taken the bold step to close the schools. It thinks KHDA would love to take that kind of step,” he said.

Moreover, he said that kids who have both their parents working may have to send their kids back home or it is very difficult to manage at home. In that case, he said the apps should work not only domestically but also globally.

How Game of Thrones inspired Panasonic TVs' best new feature

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 04:00 AM PDT

Gosh, new TVs do turn around quickly, don’t they? With a strict annual product cycle, and the likes of IFA and CES 2020 offering plenty of opportunity for the biggest TV brands to show off their wares, new sets are continually being shown off – often with only incremental upgrades between generations.

On the face of it, 2020 may seem like one of those years – OLED is now firmly established in premium product ranges, while most new ranges seem like a polishing of what has come before.

But there’s one new TV technology for 2020 that isn’t being shouted about enough, and that’s the new Game of Thrones-inspired brightness sensors being used by Panasonic and LG TVs. Here’s why they're worth paying attention to.

Dolby Vision IQ 101

This all started with Dolby Vision IQ: an algorithm designed to improve television calibration when watching the dynamic HDR Dolby Vision format.

What does that actually mean? It means that the metadata provided for Dolby Vision content – enabling it to deploy the intricacies of HDR video as effectively and precisely as possible for each shot or scene of a movie or documentary – is now able to further improve the picture onscreen in response to the brightness of your living room.

Speaking to TechRadar, Dolby told us that these picture corrections go a lot deeper than simply upping the brightness of the television panel to compensate.

Many TV shows are now produced in Dolby Vision: the dynamic HDR format favored by Netflix.

“We don’t adjust brightness or contrast,” said Dolby’s representative. “That would be a global picture setting, and thus not deliver a consistent experience.

“Dolby Vision IQ ambient light compensation algorithm is applied in 12bit precision, and models the contrast sensitivity of the human visual system at varying degrees of light adaptation to reproduce how the content would have looked to a content creator in a reference viewing environment.”

High-end TVs tend to look best in darker environments, where the backlight of an LCD television – or the self-emissive pixels of OLED TVs – aren’t being affected by external light sources, whether natural daylight or ceiling light and table lamps.

It’s very hard for TV manufacturers to design for the practicalities of people’s homes – but adding physical light sensors to TV hardware is a big step towards correcting that.

Trickle-down economics

Of course, the impact of such a feature will depend on how broadly it is implemented – but, given that only so much video is currently formatted in Dolby Vision, Dolby Vision IQ could at first glance seem inaccessible or even irrelevant to the majority of TV watchers out there.

Dolby had nothing else to tell us on that front, though a conversation with Panasonic shed further light on the topic.

We spoke to Paul Darch, TV Group General Manager at Panasonic Europe, who talked with us about utilizing the light sensor for content beyond Dolby Vision.

Panasonic's light sensor features on all its 2020 OLED TVs.

The light sensors, in Panasonic TVs at least, are also able to calibrate the picture settings for SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG content – you know, everything else – through the new Filmmaker Mode, which was designed to throttle overzealous picture processing that distorts the original intent of content makers.

That’s made possible by Panasonic’s Intelligent Sensing feature, that extends the light sensors capabilities to affect non-Dolby Vision content.

Like Dolby Vision IQ, Intelligent Sensing could probably be more clearly named to be connected to the light sensors – though either way it isn't currently available on the Dolby Vision IQ-supporting LG TVs.

“The impetus to optimize the display in bright environments came from consumer feedback that specifically HDR content can appear dark when there is some ambient light in the room,” said Darch.

“This is equally true of both OLED and LCD TVs,” he added. We have a sneaking feeling that OLED’s dimmer output over LCD / QLED TVs may be part of the reason the feature was developed, especially given it’s currently only available for select OLED sets.

A Game of Homes

Darch specifically cites the infamous Game of Thrones episode, The Long Night, which received a huge amount of complaints for dark scenes that were incredibly hard to make out for many viewers – with series cinematographer Fabien Wagner blaming viewers’ ability to tune their TVs, as well as (slightly more fairly) the compression the episode went through for HBO to broadcast and stream it, which seems to have reduced the detail of its shadowy set-pieces.

We also can’t talk about this without stating that the average television clearly isn’t as capable of distinguishing between dark details as high-end OLED displays. That’s why this light sensor feature could add so much to budget and mid-range sets that probably need the assistance more.

Darch told us that these light sensors could “potentially” land in LCD sets in the future, meaning it’s very possible we’ll see this functionality come to more mid-range sets, where it can affect a far larger number of viewers’ homes.

We couldn’t find out how much these light sensors cost to manufacture, but we assume it isn’t a huge amount compared to the overall cost of an OLED or LCD television – and we’d hope to see them appear on the latter in the 2021 range next year. We’re told that Panasonic is at least thinking about “more sensitive sensor technology or refined software”, so we’re hopeful that there’ll be more to report on in this regard, too.

We also tried to get comment from Dolby on the possibility of a Dolby Atmos IQ feature that calibrated surround sound audio in response to ambient noise in a room, but the company wouldn’t be drawn. We can dream, eh?

The Google Pixel 4a mid-ranger appears again in newly leaked images

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 03:30 AM PDT

It shouldn't be too long before the Google Pixel 4a officially breaks cover, and we've got some newly leaked images to pore over ahead of its launch, showing the handset in one of Google's familiar fabric cases.

The pictures come courtesy of Reddit via 9to5Google, and it's not immediately clear where these images originated in the first place – so apply the usual pinch of salt when deciding whether they're genuine or not.

That said, they do look real at first glance, and they do match up with previous leaks we've seen of the phone, making us place at least some trust in these shots. Pixel phones have been known to leak fairly extensively in the past.

You can see the punch hole notch that holds the front-facing camera (the Pixel 4 embedded it in the top bezel), while the fingerprint sensor makes a return on the back of the phone (the Pixel 4 ditched the fingerprint lock for a face unlock system).

It also looks as though the headphone jack is retained again, according to these pictures, a feature which the Pixel 4 doesn't have. It looks as though the phone makes do with a single rear camera, however.

It does seem clear that a Pixel 4a mid-range phone is on the way, though we haven't heard much about it in terms of design and specs up to this point. The rumors are that it won't be joined by a larger XL version this time around.

Usually we'd expect the phone to get its official unveiling at the Google IO developer conference, but this year's show has been canceled – at least in its physical form – due to concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

Nevertheless, expect the Pixel 4a to see the light of day at some point in May, quite possibly looking like these images suggest. We will of course keep you posted on any new leaks and rumors that come our way too.

WWDC 2020: what to expect from Apple’s big show if it goes ahead

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 01:00 AM PST

WWDC 2020 (or Worldwide Developers Conference 2020 to give it its full name) is the next of Apple’s annual software-focused shows.

It’s here that we’re likely to get our first official look at iOS 14, alongside various other software updates, but new hardware could make an appearance too, including potentially the iPhone 9 and a new iPad Pro.

So there’s a lot to look forward to. That said, there’s also a serious question mark over whether WWDC 2020 will even take place, given the spread of the coronavirus.

Below you’ll find all the information on what its chances are, when it’s likely to be held if it does happen, and what Apple might show off and announce.

When is WWDC 2020 and will it go ahead?

Apple hasn’t yet confirmed the dates of WWDC 2020, but it always kicks off on the first or second Monday in June, meaning June 1 or 8 this year. It’s likely to run through to the Friday, but Apple’s keynote – which is where the major announcements typically happen – will probably be on the first day, so one of the two dates above.

That’s if WWDC 2020 happens at all. Normally there would be no doubt of it happening, but the coronavirus has already caused numerous events – including MWC 2020 and Google IO – to be cancelled, so the same could happen to WWDC 2020.

At the time of writing we have no information on Apple’s plans, but the company usually confirms the WWDC dates in April, so it will likely give an indication then of whether the event is even going ahead.

We suspect there’s a high chance that it won’t – or at least not in its usual form, but the keynote and announcements part may well still happen via livestream even if the actual gathering doesn’t. So even if WWDC 2020 doesn’t happen, there’s a good chance Apple will still unveil iOS 14 and more in early June.

What to expect at WWDC 2020

As WWDC is focused on software, the most likely announcements are all software related, but there’s a significant amount of hardware that could make an appearance too. The following things are all possibilities.

iOS 14 and iPadOS 14

While we’re not certain that all the things below will make an appearance at WWDC 2020, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 seem like safe bets, since Apple has a long history of announcing new mobile software at the event.

That said, this isn’t when the finished versions of the software will land on phones and tablets. Rather, Apple will likely announce many of the key features and changes, and release an early developer build.

This, while aimed at developers, will likely be accessible to users willing to jump through a few hoops, though a public beta will probably follow soon after anyway, with the finished software likely launching in late September alongside the iPhone 12.

We haven’t heard much about what iOS 14 might feature yet, but rumors point to a redesigned app switcher and support for Apple’s long-rumored AR glasses.

watchOS 7

Apple Watch 5

We’re also very likely to get our first official look at watchOS 7 during WWDC 2020, though as with iOS 14 it probably won’t be finished and launched before late September, where it might land alongside the Apple Watch 6.

We haven’t heard any rumors about watchOS 7 yet, but likely will do in the coming weeks and months.

iPhone 9

The iPhone 9 could look a lot like the iPhone 8

The iPhone 9 has been heavily rumored and we’re confident that it’s landing soon, but the question is how soon. There’s a high chance based on rumors that it could land in late March, ahead of WWDC 2020, but elsewhere we’ve heard simply that it will land in the first half of the year, making Apple’s show a candidate.

As with the show itself, it’s also possible that the coronavirus has affected development and production of the iPhone 9, so even if a March launch was once on the table, it may not be now, which again makes WWDC a real possibility.

As for what to expect from the iPhone 9, this is thought to be a relatively affordable handset that alternatively might launch as the iPhone SE 2. Rumors suggest a design similar to the iPhone 8, complete with large bezels and a physical home button with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner baked in.

Specs reportedly include a 4.7-inch LCD screen, an A13 Bionic chipset (as found in the iPhone 11), 3GB of RAM, a single-lens rear camera, and 32GB or 64GB of storage.

New iPad Pro 2020

The iPad Pro 11 is overdue a refresh

We’re overdue a new iPad Pro, with the iPad Pro 11 landing back in 2018. But the next model, as with the iPhone 9, could actually land in late March according to reports, so we’re not at all confident that it will land at WWDC 2020.

But if not March then – particularly with the coronavirus throwing schedules off – WWDC seems like the next obvious candidate.

The new iPad Pro 2020 is rumored to have three rear cameras, up from just one on the current models, but other than that we don’t know much about it.

There’s talk of an Apple slate with a miniLED screen (which could make for a better quality display) but reports suggest that will land in late 2020, so if the next iPad Pro does arrive at or before WWDC then it might be too early for that tech.

macOS 10.16

macOS Catalina

It’s not just mobile software that we’ll likely get a look at during WWDC, the next version of macOS is also likely to be unveiled. We don’t know anything about macOS 10.16 yet, but going by previous releases it – like the other software on show – will probably get revealed at WWDC 2020 but not fully launch until at least September.

AirTag

Tile Pro

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a Tile rival, possibly called AirTag, which would be a small device that you can put in a wallet or a rucksack (or attach to other belongings) and then track them if they go missing.

We’ve heard that this might land in the first half of the year, so WWDC is a possibility. That said, it hasn’t specifically been linked to WWDC, so we’re not at all sure that we’ll see it there.

HomePod 2

Apple is likely working on a new HomePod, with some reports suggesting that it could be a more compact one, possibly launching as the HomePod Mini.

But whether the HomePod Mini or HomePod 2, there’s a good chance a new model will land in 2020, and WWDC 2020 is a likely venue for the announcement, especially as the original HomePod was announced at a WWDC (though it didn’t hit stores until a long time later).

Apple TV and tvOS 14

Mention of a new Apple TV 4K model was recently found in tvOS software, so a new Apple TV could be on the way, and it’s possible it will land at WWDC.

Whether or not new hardware does though, there’s also a high chance that new software will, in the form of tvOS 14, especially given that tvOS 13 was shown off at WWDC 2019, followed by a launch in September.

New Mac hardware

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

We’ve mentioned that new Mac software is likely to be announced at WWDC. Well, new Mac hardware is as well. At WWDC 2019 we got the Mac Pro. At WWDC 2020 we could potentially see a new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or refreshed versions of any of Apple’s other desktop or laptop hardware.

  • Later in the year we're expecting the iPhone 12

Paris-Nice 2020 live stream: how to watch cycling online from anywhere

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 12:05 AM PST

The Paris-Nice cycling tour is back for 2020, meaning eight days of the professional race to enjoy, crossing some of the beautiful sites of the Côte d’Azur. This race isn't known as the Race to the Sun for nothing – it's a beauty. And you can watch it all using a Paris-Nice live stream.

The Paris-Nice eight-stage race is in its 78th year. The course will run a total of 1,206 km starting in Plaisir and ending in, you guessed it, Nice. As the race gets closer to Nice the hills become more intense with the hill climbers coming into their own in these stages. The first three days are relatively flat but the penultimate stage has a 15km ascent with a 7.3% gradient up the Turini Pass.

This is all part of the UCI World Tour, it's second race of the season, in fact. So expect lots of big name riders and teams to be in attendance. It was actually this race which led to the rule of UCI riders being required to wear helmets at all times, following the death of Andrey Kivilev after a head injury sustained in a crash.

Last year saw Columbian Egan Bernal take victory for Team Sky. In 2018 it was Movistar's Spaniard Marc Soler who won it. The three years preceding that saw Team Sky win with Colombia's Sergio Henao in 2017, Geraint Thomas from Great Britain in 2016 and Australian Richie Porte in 2015.

Despite having the most wins, with 21, France hasn't had a Frenchman win since 1997. Could this be the year? You can watch and find out by using a Paris-Nice live stream anywhere in the world. Read on to find out how to watch where you are.

Live stream Paris-Nice 2020 from outside your country

We have details of all the UK, US and Canada broadcasters further down this guide. The good news for cycling fans in France and Australia is that it's on free-to-air TV. This will be shown on France 3 and SBS respectively.

If you're obsessed by watching the cycling and refuse to miss a stage - even when you're away on business or on holiday - then you'll be disappointed to see your domestic coverage geo-blocked when you try to stream online from abroad. That's where utilising a VPN (Virtual Private Network) really helps. It lets you virtually change the ISP of your laptop, tablet or mobile to one that's back in your home country. Thus letting you watch as if you were back there.

Australia vs India live stream: watch today's T20 Women's World Cup 2020 final from anywhere

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 09:01 PM PST

The 2020 Women's T20 World Cup final is here and it features host nation Australia making their sixth T20 World Cup final appearance - an astounding feat when you consider that the tournament has been held just seven times. Surely it would be extra special for the Aussies to win on home turf, so don't risk missing a boundary or wicket by following our Australia vs India live stream guide and learning how to watch the Women's T20 World Cup final wherever you are today.

Yet while they've been dominant throughout the history of the tournament, Australia have looked shaky at times during the Women's T20 World Cup in 2020 - and were saved by the rain as they only just edged South Africa to book their place in today's final.

India's semi-final against England was an even more brutal casualty of the weather - for the English, at least - with the Women in Blue progressing to the final by virtue of emerging as Group A winners with an undefeated record during the round robin stage of the tournament.

Australia will be looking for their middle order to deliver today, after it was left to skipper Meg Lanning to lead the way with a crucial knock of 49 in the semi-final against the Proteas.

The Aussies will no doubt enjoy strong home support from the crowd, but India aren't likely to be phased, having already bested the hosts in the tournament's opening match by a narrow margin of 17 runs. That match saw spin queen Poonam Yadav bamboozle the Aussie batting order, and one suspects much will depend on the form of the right-arm legbreaker if the Indians are to win their first World Cup.

It's a match not be missed - don't miss a ball by checking out our Australia vs India live stream guide. Best of all, it's even free to watch the T20 World Cup Women's final in some countries!

Live stream T20 cricket from outside your country

You might find you have a problem accessing your usual home service if you're abroad because of geo-blocking. It's where local broadcasters lock online streams of their coverage to specific areas by logging the IP address of the device trying to access their website.

Fortunately, there's an easy way to get around this nuisance and tune into the cricket just like you would from home. It's called using a VPN, and these useful pieces of software - known as Virtual Private Networks in full - allow you to log back to your country that is broadcasting the match.

Millions of Android tablets at risk of hacking because they run on Kit Kat

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 08:00 PM PST

Tens of millions of Android tablets have gone years without a security update and could be at risk of hacking. In some instances, both Google (author of the Android OS) and the tablet vendor have pulled support for the devices.

The latest data on operating system share, released by analytics firm Net Marketshare, shows 13% of tablets (that's one in every eight) still run Android 4.4, which is nearly seven years old.

The last time this version of Android received a security patch was in October 2017 when a fix was issued for four vulnerabilities, two of which were deemed critical.

Other 4.x variants (Android 4.0 to Android 4.3) account for another 3% of tablets, while Android 5.x (Lollipop) devices make up nearly 10% of the userbase, making it the second most popular Android variant.

Built-in obsolescence?

Up to a billion Android smartphones still run on version 6.x or older and unpatched devices are at significant risk of being infected with malware.

Critics have highlighted the fact Android devices have a significantly shorter shelf life compared to other operating systems like Windows 7 or Windows 10.

It was not long ago that tablets were regarded as the rightful heir to the laptop throne, spawning countless articles on why "they were better than notebooks" (although that didn't exactly pan out).

Android tablets based on Android 4.4 (AKA Kit Kat) were the first to truly bring the best out of Android on a slate form factor, boasting features that are now considered de facto standard.

Popular tablets that ran on Android 4.x include the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE, the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet LTE, Samsung Google Nexus 10 and the original Nvidia Shield tablet.

Owners of older Android tablets would be wise to check for available updates, back up their data and protect their devices using antivirus services.

UFC 248 live stream: watch Israel Adesanya vs Yoel Romero from anywhere right now

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 06:25 PM PST

It's a big day for fight fans, as UFC 248 is set to take place in Vegas and features a fascinating card headlined by a middleweight championship bout between undefeated Israel Adesanya - the current title holder - and challenger Yoel Romero. Here's how to live stream UFC 248 and watch Adesanya vs Romero online from anywhere in the world.

Adesanya comes into tonight's fight with an unblemished 18-0 record. The 30-year-old Nigerian-New Zealander will be full of confidence following an emphatic victory over Robert Whittaker in his last octagon appearance, which was last October in Melbourne.

But Cuban veteran Yoel Romero stands in his way, with the former Olympic wrestling silver medallist widely regarded as one of most athletic fighters to ever fight in UFC. The 40-year-old has so far failed to hit the heights his skill set suggests,  but this fight provides him with another opportunity to defy his age and finally become a UFC title holder.

Adesanya's ruthless dispatch of Whittaker was a feat that Romero wasn't able to match in his two meetings against the Australian star, which may give some indication as to the likely outcome of Saturday's showdown. Regarded as one of best strikers in the sport, Adesanya is 10 years younger than his opponent and has a 6.5-inch reach advantage to boot.

Ready to catch all of the action? Scroll down to find out everything you need to know about watching a UFC 248 live stream wherever you are in the world tonight.

WandaVision on Disney Plus: release date, cast, trailer, MCU connections and more

Posted: 07 Mar 2020 04:24 PM PST

It's Marvel's weirdest spin-off yet – WandaVision takes the MCU into uncharted territory on Disney Plus. Featuring the return of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), the Scarlet Witch, and the Vision (Paul Bettany), the upcoming Marvel TV series will reunite these Avengers – even though one of them is supposed to be dead. WandaVision is going to be an unconventional kind of show.

"It is half classic sitcom and half full MCU spectacular," explained WandaVision writer Jac Schaeffer at D23. What does that mean, exactly? Well, a recent Super Bowl teaser showcased the classic sitcom side of things a little – it looks like these parts of the show will be used as a prism for exploring out-there stories with the character. This surreal framing device could also explain how Vision is still alive in the show.

WandaVision will also reintroduce a number of supporting characters from the MCU's greatest hits. Below, you'll find everything you need to know about the series, including details about the cast, which heroes and villains you can expect, and more.

WandaVision release date: December 2020

WandaVision has a confirmed release date of December 2020, it was announced in an investor call – a specific day hasn't been revealed yet. It'll release exclusively on Disney Plus. WandaVision began filming in Atlanta, Georgia in late 2019 with set photos teasing one of Wanda's new looks.

It's been confirmed that WandaVision will air as six individual episodes, likely released on a weekly schedule similar to The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars.

There is a WandaVision trailer (kind of)

Our first look at WandaVision came in the teaser trailer above, released at the Super Bowl. It shows Wanda in her Scarlet Witch costume from the comics for the first time. We also see a little more of the sitcom style of the show at work – we catch a '50s-style black-and-white sequence, and another more '80s/'90s-looking scene that might remind you of a show like Roseanne, with Vision even dressed up like a sitcom dad.

A full trailer will likely be revealed around Comic Con time in July.

WandaVision's story: what's the show about?

It's the big question – what the heck is WandaVision about? We know for certain that WandaVision will focus on Wanda Maximoff and The Vision, reunited in some form after the events of Avengers: Endgame. But how that happens isn't exactly clear. The last time we saw Vision, Thanos was ripping the Mind Stone from his head, leaving the synthetic superhero dead.

Well, Marvel has revealed that WandaVision will tie into the upcoming MCU film, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which might offer a clue as to how this story is being told. Marvel's riff on the notion of alternate universes could mean there will be at least one where The Vision is still alive.

Does that mean WandaVision exists in an entirely different reality altogether? It's possible, but Wanda has always had reality-altering powers, too – in the comic House of M, she reshaped the entire Marvel Universe so that characters were placed in entirely different situations. It could be that this sitcom reality is one of her own making.

Some details add intrigue to the story. Spotted shooting on location in Atlanta, actress Teyona Paris was seen carrying an ID badge for fictional US government department, SWORD. Marvel fans will be aware of SHIELD already, of course – but SWORD was actually introduced in Avengers director Joss Whedon's comic Astonishing X-Men, as the outer space-policing opposite to SHIELD.

The story of the upcoming WandaVision TV show remains a bit of a mystery, but series star Elizabeth Olsen has revealed that the show will explain why Wanda becomes known as Scarlet Witch. The series' suburban setting is inspired visually by the acclaimed Vision comic by Tom King and Gabriel Walta from 2015 – and we're likely to see Sparky the dog from the comic appear in this series, who's like the Vision version of a pet.

The WandaVision cast features heroes from across the MCU

Marvel's WandaVision

Obviously WandaVision will see the return of Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany as The Vision, but they'll be joined by some other familiar names from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Kat Dennings will return as wisecracking political science major Darcy Lewis from the Thor movies. Randall Park is also back in the role of FBI agent Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man and the Wasp – he was a highlight of an otherwise lesser entry in the MCU canon. Both have deep sitcom backgrounds, which might explain why they're a good fit for this show.

Joining them is another familiar character – but the last time we saw them in a previous Marvel movie, they were a lot younger.

Teyonah Parris has been cast as Monica Rambeau – that's the daughter of Carol Danvers's best friend Maria Rambeau in the movie, Captain Marvel. This time around, she's an adult and working for the aforementioned government agency, SWORD.

Matt Shakman (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Fargo) will be bringing his comedy touch to the show as director, while Black Widow's Jac Shaeffer is WandaVision's lead writer.

WandaVision adds a touch of classic sitcom to the MCU

WandaVision has opted for a genre-smashing combination of sitcom style with classic Marvel superhero tales. In fact, the show's official poster even forgoes the usual sleek Marvel visuals in favour of a classic 1950s sitcom style, bringing to mind classic shows such as Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie.

But it seems it's not quite as simple as that.

"Having the opportunity to tell more of their story, to see more of what Wanda can do, more of what makes Vision Vision, and – most importantly – reveal a name that I'm not even sure we've said in the MCU yet, but we absolutely make a big deal of in the show, which is that Wanda is in fact the Scarlet Witch," said Marvel boss Kevin Feige in a recent interview.

"What does that mean, that she is the Scarlet Witch? And that's what we play into in this show, in ways that are entirely fun, entirely funny, somewhat scary, and will have repercussions for the entire future Phase 4 of the MCU." Another reason to stay subscribed to Disney Plus, then.
