Google Maps for Android gets public transport filtering

Android users can now choose one mode of public transport to show on Google Maps instead of having to sift through several.

The update, Google Maps for Android version 6.10, lets you pick whether you want to see train, bus, tram or underground information on the map rather than just showing them all.

This will make life easier in big cities where all four transport types are available in a small area.

Stop map

Station pages have had a bit of an overhaul to display more information including departure times and the distance to nearby stations.

As well as the public transport updates, the Android app will also now highlight the borders of a region you search for, with a couple of tweaks to My Places and the addition of a Local History dashboard to boot.

The Android-friendly upgrade comes as Google celebrates the fact that it now has over one million transit stops mapped in over 500 cities worldwide.

There's no word on if or when the nifty new additions will make it to Google Maps on other platforms.

Microsoft has no plans for Office retina display fix

Microsoft has no plans for Office retina display fix

New MacBook Pro owners may want to start looking into word processor alternatives due to issues viewing Microsoft Office 2011 on a retina display.

Microsoft updated its Office for Mac blog last month with a post announcing that the program is read for Mountain Lion.

Since then, users filled the comments on that post with complaints about how it looks fuzzy, blurry, or otherwise unusable on Apple's sharper screen.

A member of the Office for Mac team has now responded to the comments, though the response is not quite the answer Mac users wanted.

"Outlook for Mac 2011 already supports Retina Display and the remaining apps will have the same viewing quality as on any non-Retina device," the representative said.

"Unfortunately at this time, we cannot comment on any future updates regarding supporting Retina on Word, Excel or PowerPoint."

Bleary-eyed at the Office

Similar blurriness issues were seen on many web pages when Apple first launched the retina display-equipped iPhone 4 in 2010.

Lower resolution images tend to look blurry on the retina display's higher pixel density. This is not an issue for text on the web, since fonts are processed through the web browsers that support retina displays.

However, fonts in Office are processed by the program itself, and if the program doesn't play nice with retina displays then the result is muddy text and disappointed users.

Microsoft is currently gearing up for the launch of Office 2013 on Windows, but there is no word on a Mac version of the new suite nor an update the existing version.

On a completely unrelated note, Apache's Open Office is free and reportedly supports retina displays quite well.

ESPN Goals app gets major update ahead of new Premier League season

The popular and massively useful ESPN Goals app has received some timely updates, with the start of the new Premier League season just days away.

The free app, which is available on iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, serves up video of goals from around the league as soon as they happen.

The app updates, which Pocket-Lint reports have been added quietly throughout the summer, now features the ability to share those goals with other ESPN Goals users through social media.

Pre-and-post game analysis

The app now features pre and post-game analysis from the ESPN studio team, and previews of every fixture.

It'll also feature, for applicable versions, homescreen widgets (such as on Windows Phone and Android) that will update the scores as they happen.

ESPN Goals can also now also be personalised for your favourite club to prioritise all of the latest news.

The app, quite remarkably, remains free and can be updated and installed from all of the regular places for UK users only.
